Influence of Three-Dimensional Printing Parameters on Compressive Properties and Surface Smoothness of Polylactic Acid Specimens

While the mechanical performance of fused filament fabrication (FFF) parts has been extensively studied in terms of the tensile and bending strength, limited research accounts for their compressive performance. This study investigates the effect of four process parameters (layer height, extrusion width, nozzle temperature, and printing speed) on the compressive properties and surface smoothness of FFF parts made of Polylactic Acid (PLA). The orthogonal Taguchi method was employed for designing the experiments. The surface roughness and compressive properties of the specimens were then measured and optimized using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). A microscopic analysis was also performed to identify the failure mechanism under static compression. The results indicated that the layer height had the most significant influence on all studied properties, followed by the print speed in the case of compressive modulus, hysteresis loss, and residual strain; extrusion width in the case of compressive strength and specific strength; and nozzle temperature in the case of toughness and failure strain. The optimal design for both high compressive properties and surface smoothness were determined as a 0.05 mm layer height, 0.65 mm extrusion width, 205 °C nozzle temperature, and 70 mm/s print speed. The main failure mechanism observed by SEM analysis was delamination between layers, occurring at highly stressed points near the stitch line of the PLA prints.

Study on the Compressive Properties of an Elastomeric Porous Cylinder Using 360° Three-Dimensional Digital Image Correlation System

To study the compressive properties of an elastomeric porous cylinder, a 360° 3D digital image correlation (DIC) system is proposed. This compact vibration isolation table system captures different segments of the object from four different angles and fields of view, enabling a comprehensive measurement of the full surface of the object. To increase the stitching quality, a coarse-fine coordinate matching method is presented. First, a three-dimensional rigid body calibration auxiliary block is employed to track motion trajectory, which enables preliminary matching of four 3D DIC sub-systems. Subsequently, scattered speckle information characteristics guide fine matching. The accuracy of the 360° 3D DIC system is verified through a three-dimensional shape measurement conducted on a cylindrical shell, and the maximum relative error of the shell's diameter is 0.52%. A thorough investigation of the 3D compressive displacements and strains exerted on the full surface of an elastomeric porous cylinder are investigated. The results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed 360° measuring system on calculating images with voids and indicate a negative Poisson's ratio of periodically cylindrical porous structures.

Effects of Fly Ash and Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane on the Compressive Properties and Water Resistance of Magnesium Oxychloride Cement

The application of magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) is promising, but its poor water resistance seriously hinders its development and application. In this paper, we describe a new type of MOC with excellent water resistance, prepared using fly ash and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS). SEM, XRD, FTIR, TG/DSC, and other microscopic-scale studies were conducted to investigate the mechanism underlying the water-resistance enhancement of the new MOC. It was found that adding 20% fly ash and 3% HDTMS can strengthen the water resistance of MOC while retaining high mechanical properties. In particular, the residual coefficient remained at 0.91 after 7 days of immersion. This is because these two additives, when used together, can increase the content of the gelling 5-phase of MOC, as well as optimize the pore structure of MOC.

Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of Newly Developed Zn-Mg-CaO Composite

In this study, the Zn-0.8Mg-0.28CaO wt.% composite was successfully prepared using different conditions of ball milling (rotations and time) followed by a direct extrusion process. These materials were characterized from the point of view of microstructure and compressive properties, and the correlation between those characteristics was found. Microstructures of individual materials possessed differences in grain size, where the grain size decreased with the intensified conditions (milling speed and time). However, the mutual relation between grain size and compressive strength was not linear. This was caused by the effect of other factors, such as texture, intermetallic phases, and pores. Material texture affects the mechanical properties by a different activity ratio between basal and pyramidal <c + a> slips. The properties of intermetallic particles and pores were determined in material volume using micro-computed tomography (µCT), enhancing the precision of our assumptions compared with commonly applied methods. Based on that, and the analysis after the compressive tests, we were able to determine the influence of aspect ratio, feret diameters, and volume content of intermetallic phases and pores on mechanical behavior. The influence of the aspects on mechanical behavior is described and discussed.

Study on the Compressive Properties of Magnesium Phosphate Cement Mixing with Eco-Friendly Coir Fiber Considering Fiber Length

Coir fiber (CF), an eco-friendly and renewable natural fiber, was introduced into magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) mortar to improve its crack resistance. A total of 21 specimens were employed to investigate the failure pattern, compressive strength, stress–strain curve, and energy absorption of MPC with varying CF lengths (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 mm) after a curing period of 28 days through a static compressive test. The results demonstrated that compressive strength, elastic modulus, and secant modulus decreased with the increase in CF length. However, energy absorption presented a convex curve, which increased to the maximum value (77.0% relative to the value of the specimen without CF) with a CF length of 20 mm and then declined. A series of modern micro-tests were then carried out to analyze the microstructure and composition of specimens to explain the properties microscopically.

Preparation, Characterization, and Properties of Novel Ti-Zr-Be-Co Bulk Metallic Glasses

We developed novel Ti-Zr-Be-Co bulk metallic glasses through Co addition based on a ternary Ti45Zr20Be35 alloy. By altering the alloying routes and alloying contents, the influence of Co alloying on glass-forming ability, thermal stability, thermoplastic formability, crystallization behavior, and corrosion resistance has been investigated systematically. It was found that the best alloying route for enhancing the glass-forming ability, thermoplastic formability, compressive plasticity, and corrosion resistance is to replace Be by Co. Ti45Zr20Be23Co12 possesses the largest critical diameter of 15 mm for glass formation. Ti45Zr20Be27Co8 possesses the highest thermoplastic formability which is comparable to that of Vitreloy alloys. Ti45Zr20Be25Co10 exhibits the largest room temperature plasticity of 15.7% together with a high specific strength of 3.90 × 105 Nm/kg. The addition of Co also strongly affects the crystallization behavior of the base alloy, resulting in a more complex crystallization process. The corrosion resistance of Ti-Zr-Be alloy in 1 mol/L HCl solution can also be enhanced by Co alloying. The related mechanisms have been explained in detail, which provide guidance for the composition design of Ti-based metallic glasses with improved properties.

Modification of PMMA Cements for Cranioplasty with Bioactive Glass and Copper Doped Tricalcium Phosphate Particles

Cranioplasty represents the surgical repair of bone defects or deformities in the cranium arising from traumatic skull bone fracture, cranial bone deformities, bone cancer, and infections. The actual gold standard in surgery procedures for cranioplasty involves the use of biocompatible materials, and repair or regeneration of large cranial defects is particularly challenging from both a functional and aesthetic point of view. PMMA-based bone cement are the most widely biomaterials adopted in the field, with at least four different surgical approaches. Modifications for improving biological and mechanical functions of PMMA-based bone cement have been suggested. To this aim, the inclusion of antibiotics to prevent infection has been shown to provide a reduction of mechanical properties in bending. Therefore, the development of novel antibacterial active agents to overcome issues related to mechanical properties and bacterial resistance to antibiotics is still encouraged. In this context, mechanical, biological, and antibacterial feature against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacterial strains of surgical PMMA cement modified with BG and recently developed Cu-TCP bioactive particles have been highlighted.

Multi-Fold Enhancement in Compressive Properties of Polystyrene Foam Using Pre-delaminated Stearate Functionalized Layer Double Hydroxides

Developing an environmentally benign styrene foam is a critical environmental need. Supercritical CO₂ use in foams has proven to be a valuable path. Adding fillers to increase bubble nucleation has been pursued concurrently. A prominent filler used is high surface area fillers, such as smectic clays. However, all studies to date show a limit of 152% in compressive moduli and 260% in the compressive stress. The values, even with such gains, limit structural application. A seminal work in 1987 by Suh and Cotton proved that carbonyl linkages in calcium carbonates and CO₂ interact and impact nucleation efficiency and performance in supercritical CO₂ foams. In this paper, a high surface area clay (layer double hydroxides) which begins in an exfoliated state, then functionalized with a long chain alkyl carboxylate (stearic acid) is synthesized. The result is a remarkable multi-fold improvement to the compressive properties in comparison to polystyrene (PS); a 268% and 512% increase in compressive modulus and strength, respectively. Using a pre-delaminated approach, the higher surface area was achieved in the clays. The presence of the stearate improved the interactions between the clay galleries and PS through hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. The glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites was observed to shift to higher values after foaming. The results point to a new path to increase performance using a pre-delaminated clay with functional groups for environmentally benign foams.

Effects of Nb on the Microstructure and Compressive Properties of an As-Cast Ni44Ti44Nb12 Eutectic Alloy

The addition of Nb can form a eutectic phase with a NiTi matrix in a NiTi-based shape memory alloy, improving the transition hysteresis of the NiTi alloy. A Ni44Ti44Nb12 ingot was prepared using the vacuum induction melting technique. Under compression deformation, the yield strength of the NiTi-Nb alloy is about 1000 MPa, the maximum compressive strength and strain can reach 3155 MPa and 43%, respectively. Ni44Ti44Nb12 exhibited a superelastic recovery similar to that of the as-cast NiTi50. Meanwhile, the loading-unloading cycle compression shows that the superelastic recovery strain reached a maximum value (2.32%) when the total strain was about 15%, and the superelasticity tends to rise first and then decrease as the strain increases.

A Novel Low-Activation VCrFeTaxWx (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 1) High-Entropy Alloys with Excellent Heat-Softening Resistance

The microstructure, Vickers hardness, and compressive properties of novel low-activation VCrFeTa_xW_x (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 1) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were studied. The alloys were fabricated by vacuum-arc melting and the characteristics of these alloys were explored. The microstructures of all the alloys exhibited a typical morphology of dendritic and eutectic structures. The VCrFeTa_0.1W_0.1 and VCrFeTa_0.2W_0.2 alloys are essentially single phase, consisting of a disordered body-centered-cubic (BCC) phase, whereas the VCrFeTa_0.2W_0.2 alloy contains fine, nanoscale precipitates distributed in the BCC matrix. The lattice parameters and compositions of the identified phases were investigated. The alloys have Vickers hardness values ranging from 546 HV_0.2 to 1135 HV_0.2 with the x ranging from 0.1 to 1, respectively. The VCrFeTa_0.1W_0.1 and VCrFeTa_0.2W_0.2 alloys exhibit compressive yield strengths of 1341 MPa and 1742 MPa, with compressive plastic strains of 42.2% and 35.7%, respectively. VCrFeTa_0.1W_0.1 and VCrFeTa_0.2W_0.2 alloys have excellent hardness after annealing for 25 h at 600–1000 °C, and presented compressive yield strength exceeding 1000 MPa with excellent heat-softening resistance at 600–800 °C. By applying the HEA criteria, Ta and W additions into the VCrFeTaW are proposed as a family of candidate materials for fusion reactors and high-temperature structural applications.

Comparison of Tensile and Compressive Properties of Carbon/Glass Interlayer and Intralayer Hybrid Composites

Tensile and compressive properties of interlayer and intralayer hybrid composites were investigated in this paper. The tensile modulus and compression modulus of interlayer and intralayer hybrid composites are the same under the same mixed ratio, the tensile strength is much superior to the compression strength, and while the tensile modulus and strength increase along with the carbon fiber content, the compression values change slightly. The influence of stacking structures on the tensile and compressive strengths is opposite to the ratio of T/C (tensile/compression) strength for interlayer hybrid composites, and while the tensile and compression strengths with glass fiber sandwiching carbon fiber can reach the maximum value, the ratio of T/C strength is minimum. For structures with carbon fiber sandwiching glass fiber, or with asymmetric structures, the tensile and compressive strengths are at a low value. For intralayer hybrid structures, while the carbon/glass (C/G) dispersion degree is high, the tensile and compression strengths are low. The experimental tensile and compressive strengths for interlayer and intralayer hybrid composites are greater than the theoretical values, which demonstrates that strength conforms well to the positive hybrid effect. The tensile fracture strain is greater than the compression fracture strain for hybrid composites, with both of them basically maintained at the same level.

Compression Properties of Interlayer and Intralayer Carbon/Glass Hybrid Composites

The compression properties and mechanisms of interlayer and intralayer Carbon/Glass (C/G) hybrid composites were investigated in this work. As revealed from the experimental results, the compression modulus increases linearly with the increase of carbon fiber content, following the rule of mixtures (ROM). The C/G hybrid ratio is regarded as the decisive factor for the compression modulus of hybrid composites. The positive mixing effect exists on compression strength for interlayer and intralayer hybrid composites, whereas the experimental values are above the theoretical calculation values. The compressive strength of interlayer hybrid composites taking on various hybrid structures differs largely at the same mixed ratio, at which the compressive strength of glass fiber sandwiching carbon fiber is higher than that of carbon fiber sandwiching glass fiber. Through comparing interlayer and intralayer hybrid composites, the impact exerted by layer structures on the compressive strength of interlayer hybrid composites is higher than that of intralayer hybrid composites, which leads to more designable characteristics for interlayer hybrid composites. This work makes it possible to optimize the compression strength of interlayer hybrid structures so that it achieves or basically exceeds pure carbon fiber composites.

Compressive Properties of Open-Cell Al Hybrid Foams at Different Temperatures

Hybrid Ni/Al foams were fabricated by depositing electroless Ni-P (EN) coatings on open-cell Al foam substrate to obtain enhanced mechanical properties. The microstructure, chemical components and phases of the hybrid foams were observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The mechanical properties of the foams were studied by compressive tests at different temperatures. The experiment results show that the coating is mainly composed of Ni and P elements. There was neither defect at the interface nor crack in the coatings, indicating that the EN coatings had fine adhesion to the Al substrate. The compressive strengths and energy absorption capacities of the as-received foam and hybrid foams decrease with the increasing testing temperatures, but the hybrid foams exhibit a lower decrement rate than the as-received foam. This might be attributed to the different failure mechanisms at different testing temperatures, which is conformed by fractography observation.

Compressibility of 304 Stainless Steel Powder Metallurgy Materials Reinforced with 304 Short Stainless Steel Fibers

Powder metallurgy (P/M) technique is usually used for manufacturing porous metal materials. However, some P/M materials are limitedly used in engineering for their performance deficiency. A novel 304 stainless steel P/M material was produced by a solid-state sintering of 304 stainless steel powders and 304 short stainless steel fibers, which were alternately laid in layers according to mass ratio. In this paper, the compressive properties of the P/M materials were characterized by a series of uniaxial compression tests. The effects of fiber content, compaction pressure and high temperature nitriding on compressive properties were investigated. The results indicated that, without nitriding, the samples changed from cuboid to cydariform without damage in the process of compression. The compressive stress was enhanced with increasing fiber content ranging from 0 to 8 wt.%. For compaction pressure from 55 to 75 MPa, greater compaction pressure improved compressive stress. Moreover, high temperature nitriding was able to significantly improve the yield stress, but collapse failure eventually occurred.

Synthesis and Quasi-Static Compressive Properties of Mg-AZ91D-Al₂O₃ Syntactic Foams

Magnesium alloys have considerably lower density than the aluminum alloy matrices that are typically used in syntactic foams, allowing for greater specific energy absorption. Despite the potential advantages, few studies have reported the properties of magnesium alloy matrix syntactic foams. In this work, Al₂O₃ hollow particles of three different size ranges, 0.106–0.212 mm, 0.212–0.425 mm, and 0.425–0.500 mm were encapsulated in Mg-AZ91D by a sub-atmospheric pressure infiltration technique. It is shown that the peak strength, plateau strength and toughness of the foam increases with increasing hollow sphere wall thickness to diameter (t/D) ratio. Since t/D was found to increase with decreasing hollow sphere diameter, the foams produced with smaller spheres showed improved performance—specifically, higher energy absorption per unit weight. These foams show better performance than other metallic foams on a specific property basis.

Additively Manufactured Open-Cell Porous Biomaterials Made from Six Different Space-Filling Unit Cells: The Mechanical and Morphological Properties

It is known that the mechanical properties of bone-mimicking porous biomaterials are a function of the morphological properties of the porous structure, including the configuration and size of the repeating unit cell from which they are made. However, the literature on this topic is limited, primarily because of the challenge in fabricating porous biomaterials with arbitrarily complex morphological designs. In the present work, we studied the relationship between relative density (RD) of porous Ti6Al4V EFI alloy and five compressive properties of the material, namely elastic gradient or modulus (E_s20–70), first maximum stress, plateau stress, yield stress, and energy absorption. Porous structures with different RD and six different unit cell configurations (cubic (C), diamond (D), truncated cube (TC), truncated cuboctahedron (TCO), rhombic dodecahedron (RD), and rhombicuboctahedron (RCO)) were fabricated using selective laser melting. Each of the compressive properties increased with increase in RD, the relationship being of a power law type. Clear trends were seen in the influence of unit cell configuration and porosity on each of the compressive properties. For example, in terms of E_s20–70, the structures may be divided into two groups: those that are stiff (comprising those made using C, TC, TCO, and RCO unit cell) and those that are compliant (comprising those made using D and RD unit cell).
