Abstract
Post-stroke depression (PSD) represents a significant neuropsychiatric complication that affects between 39% and 52% of stroke survivors, leading to impaired recovery, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality. This comprehensive review synthesizes our current knowledge of PSD, encompassing its epidemiology, risk factors, underlying neurochemical mechanisms, and the existing tools for preclinical investigation, including animal models and behavioral analyses. Despite the high prevalence and severe impact of PSD, challenges persist in accurately modeling its complex symptomatology in preclinical settings, underscoring the need for robust and valid animal models to better understand and treat PSD. This review also highlights the multidimensional nature of PSD, where both biological and psychosocial factors interplay to influence its onset and course. Further, we examine the efficacy and limitations of the current animal models in mimicking the human PSD condition, along with behavioral tests used to evaluate depressive-like behaviors in rodents. This review also sets a new precedent by integrating the latest findings across multidisciplinary studies, thereby offering a unique and comprehensive perspective of existing knowledge. Finally, the development of more sophisticated models that closely replicate the clinical features of PSD is crucial in order to advance translational research and facilitate the discovery of future effective therapies.

Abstract
Introduction This exploratory review article describes about the genetic factors behind Alzheimer's disease (AD), their association with foods, and their relationships with cognitive impairment. It explores the dietary patterns and economic challenges in AD prevention. Methods Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for articles that examined the relationships between Diets, Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and Socioeconomic conditions in preventative Alzheimer's disease studies. Graphs and Network analysis data were taken from Scopus under the MeSH search method, including words, Alzheimer's, APoE4, Tau protein, APP, Amyloid precursor protein, Beta-Amyloid, Aβ, Mediterranean Diet, MD, DASH diet, MIND diet, SES, Socioeconomic, Developed country, Underdeveloped country, Preventions. The network analysis was done through VOS viewer. Results Mediterranean diet (MD) accurately lowers AD (Alzheimer's Disease) risk to 53% and 35% for people who follow it moderately. MIND scores had a statistically significant reduction in AD rate compared to those in the lowest tertial (53% and 35% reduction, respectively). Subjects with the highest adherence to the MD and DASH had a 54% and 39% lower risk of developing AD, respectively, compared to those in the lowest tertial. Omega-6, PUFA, found in nuts and fish, can play most roles in the clearance of Aβ. Vitamin D inhibits induced fibrillar Aβ apoptosis. However, the high cost of these diet components rise doubt about the effectiveness of AD prevention through healthy diets. Conclusion The finding of this study revealed an association between diet and the effects of the chemical components of foods on AD biomarkers. More research is required to see if nutrition is a risk or a protective factor for Alzheimer's disease to encourage research to be translated into therapeutic practice and to clarify nutritional advice.

Abstract
Stroke is a serious cerebrovascular disease that causes post-stress depression and death. Stress and inflammation have pivotal roles in the induction of the disease. Several drugs and agents have been used for the treatment of disease, but their uses are faced with limitations owing to their side effects. Natural agents are more efficient for the treatment of stroke due to lower toxicity and their pharmaceutical properties. Sake yeast or Japanese rice wine is an antioxidant compound that could be used to treat stroke and post-stress depression. This study evaluates the effects of sake yeast on depressive-like behaviors, oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters in a rat model of global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. Rats were divided into four groups, including 1) control: without bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) and sake supplement, 2) Ischemia group: rats induced with BCCAO and lack of therapeutic supplement, and 3 and 4) Ischemia + sake groups: rats induced with BCCAO and treated with 25 and 50 mg/kg sake yeast, respectively. Depressive-like behaviors antioxidant enzymes activities were assessed. The induction of stroke increased oxidant status, inflammatory parameters, and depressive-like behaviors, while the administration of sake could decrease inflammation, depressive-like behaviors, and oxidant status and increase antioxidant enzymes. The yeast could be used as a supplement in combination with other drugs to treat stroke.

Abstract
Depression is a psychiatric disorder affecting the lives of patients and their families worldwide. It is an important pathophysiology; however, the molecular pathways involved are not well understood. Pharmacological treatment may promote side effects or be ineffective. Consequently, efforts have been made to understand the molecular pathways in depressive patients and prevent their symptoms. In this context, animal models have suggested phytochemicals from medicinal plants, especially phenolic acids, as alternative treatments. These bioactive molecules are known for their antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. They occur in some fruits, vegetables, and herbal plants. This review focused on phenolic acids and extracts from medicinal plants and their effects on depressive symptoms, as well as the molecular interactions and pathways implicated in these effects. Results from preclinical trials indicate the potential of phenolic acids to reduce depressive-like behaviour by regulating factors associated with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, autophagy, and deregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, stimulating monoaminergic neurotransmission and neurogenesis, and modulating intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
Traditional enzymolysis method for producing bioactive peptides does not consider the utilization of digestive enzymes in the human gastrointestinal tract, leading to the possibility of excessive hydrolysis and higher production cost. Therefore, a two-stage enzymolysis method was established in this study based on in vitro limited enzymolysis and gastrointestinal digestion, and applied it to the research of walnut protein (WP) in exerting antioxidant activity. Results showed that WP could be well-digested by pepsin and pancreatin. WP with limited enzymolysis degree of 0% could achieve high antioxidant activity after the simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and reducing power were 66.53% and 8.55 μmoL TE/mL, respectively. In vivo experimental results also exhibited that both WP and WP hydrolysate (WPH) could alleviate the oxidative damage induced by D-galactose in SD rats to some extent. Considering the digestive function of human body, in vitro limited enzymolysis, in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion and in vivo validation are necessary processes for the production of bioactive peptides.

Abstract
Hyperforin, a major bioactive constituent of Hypericum concentration, is impacted by various phenological phases and soil characteristics. We aimed to design a model predicting hyperforin content in Hypericum perforatum based on different ecological and phenological conditions. We employed artificial intelligence modeling techniques including multilayer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function (RBF), and support vector machine (SVM) to examine the factors critical in predicting hyperforin content. We found that the MLP model (R 2 = .9) is the most suitable and precise model compared with RBF (R 2 = .81) and SVM (R 2 = .74) in predicting hyperforin in H. perforatum based on ecological conditions, plant growth, and soil features. Moreover, phenological stages, organic carbon, altitude, and total N are detected in sensitivity analysis as the main factors that have a considerable impact on hyperforin content. We also report that the developed graphical user interface would be adaptable for key stakeholders including producers, manufacturers, analytical laboratory managers, and pharmacognosists.

Abstract
The study aims to determine the secondary metabolites of Hypericum androsaemum L. extracts by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), and investigate the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the plant. Cytotoxic activity was evaluated by MTT assay, and apoptosis induction abilities on human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3), and hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep G2) cell lines. Accordingly, major secondary metabolites were found as hederagenin (762 ± 70.10 μg/g) in the leaves dichloromethane (LD), herniarin (167 ± 1.50 μg/g) in fruit dichloromethane (FD), (-)-epicatechin (6538 ± 235.36 μg/g) in the leaves methanol (LM), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (758 ± 20.46 μg/g) in the fruit methanol (FM), and caffeic acid (370 ± 8.88 μg/g) in the fruit water (FW), and (3313 ± 79.51 μg/g) in the leaves water (LW) extracts. LM exerted strong antioxidant activity in DPPH free (IC50 10.94 ± 0.08 μg/mL), and ABTS cation radicals scavenging (IC50 9.09 ± 0.05 μg/mL) activities. FM exhibited cytotoxic activity with IC50 values of 73.23 ± 3.06 µg/mL and 31.64 ± 2.75 µg/mL on PC-3 and Hep G2 cell lines, respectively. Being the richest extract in terms of quillaic acid (630 ± 18.9 μg/g), which is a well-known cytotoxic triterpenoid with proven apoptosis induction ability on different cells, FM extract showed apoptosis induction activity with 64.75% on PC-3 cells at 50 μg/mL concentration. The study provides promising results about the potential of Hypericum androsaemum on cancer prevention.

Abstract
Depression and anxiety disorders are widespread diseases, and they belong to the leading causes of disability and greatest burdens on healthcare systems worldwide. It is expected that the numbers will dramatically rise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Established medications are not sufficient to adequately treat depression and are not available for everyone. Plants from traditional medicine may be promising alternatives to treat depressive symptoms. The model organism Chaenorhabditis elegans was used to assess the stress reducing effects of methanol/dichlormethane extracts from plants used in traditional medicine. After initial screening for antioxidant activity, nine extracts were selected for in vivo testing in oxidative stress, heat stress, and osmotic stress assays. Additionally, anti-aging properties were evaluated in lifespan assay. The extracts from Acanthopanax senticosus, Campsis grandiflora, Centella asiatica, Corydalis yanhusuo, Dan Zhi, Houttuynia cordata, Psoralea corylifolia, Valeriana officinalis, and Withaniasomnifera showed antioxidant activity of more than 15 Trolox equivalents per mg extract. The extracts significantly lowered ROS in mutants, increased resistance to heat stress and osmotic stress, and the extended lifespan of the nematodes. The plant extracts tested showed promising results in increasing stress resistance in the nematode model. Further analyses are needed, in order to unravel underlying mechanisms and transfer results to humans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: In spite of an obvious association between diet and mental health, there is only few report regarding the association between diet and psychosomatic complaints. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of the Mediterranean-DASH diet intervention for neurodegenerative delay (MIND) diet with psychosomatic complaints profile in comparison with the Mediterranean diet (aMED). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study on 2818 Isfahanian adults, a validated dish-based food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intakes. Psychosomatic complaints profile was evaluated through a self-administered Persian validated questionnaire by using exploratory factor analysis. RESULTS: After controlling for potential confounders, individuals in the highest quintile of the MIND diet had lower risk for experiencing psychological (odds ratio (OR) = 0.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.42, 0.86; P trend < 0.0001), and pharyngeal-respiratory (OR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.79; P = 0.002). The association for neuro-skeletal complaints was marginally significant (OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.43, 1.03; P = 0.093). The aMED diet tended to lower gastrointestinal complaints (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.46, 1.01; P = 0.062). CONCLUSION: The MIND diet was inversely associated with different psychosomatic complaints risk, but no evidence of such an association for the MED diet was observed.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that brings great harm and burden to both patients and society. This study aimed to examine the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) training on a chronic restraint stress (CRS) induced depression rat model and provide an initial understanding of related molecular mechanisms. Adult Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into the following three groups: a) control group, b) depressive disorder group, and c) depression with WBV training treatment group. Daily food intake, body weight, sucrose preference test, open field test, elevated plus maze, forced swimming test, and Barnes maze task tests were performed. Immunofluorescence staining and ELISA analysis were used to assess neuronal damage, synaptic proteins, glial cells, and trophic factors. The data of behavioral tests and related biochemical indicators were statistically analyzed and compared between groups. Rats undergoing CRS showed increased anxiety-like behavior and memory impairment, along with synaptic atrophy and neuronal degeneration. WBV could reverse behavioral dysfunction, inhibit the degeneration of neurons, alleviate the damage of neurons and the pathological changes of glial cells, enhance trophic factor expression, and ameliorate the downregulation of dendritic and synaptic proteins after CRS. The effect of WBV in rats may be mediated via the reduction of hippocampal neuronal degeneration and by improving expression of synaptic proteins. WBV training exerts multifactorial benefits on MDD that supports its use as a promising new therapeutic option for improving depression-like behaviors in the depressive and/or potentially depressive.

Abstract
Plants from the genus Hypericum, one genus of the Hypericaceae family, have attracted a lot of attention for their potential pharmaceutical applications. Most of the studies in the literature focus on H. perforatum L. (common St. John's wort), whose complex spectrum of bioactive compounds makes this species one of the top herbal remedies and supplements in the world. It is also important to compare the studies on other Hypericum species, both from the phytochemical and biological point of view. The aim of this review was to provide an update of most recent studies about biological investigations of plants belonging to Hypericum genus. The metabolic profiles of Hypericum spp. were also discussed in order to present a spectrum of secondary metabolites not previously identified in this genus.

Abstract
The public health sector faces a huge challenge as a result of the high prevalence and burden of disability caused by ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and depression. Although studies have explored the underlying mechanisms and potential therapies to address conditions, there is no treatment breakthrough, especially for depression which is highly influenced by social stressors. However, accumulating evidence reveals that CVD and depression are correlated and share common risk factors, particularly obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. They also share common mechanisms, including oxidative stress (OS), inflammation and immune response, cell death signaling pathway, and microbiome-gut-brain axis. This review summarizes the relationship between ischemic CVD and depression and describes the interactions among common risk factors and mechanisms for these two diseases. In addition, we propose that OS mediates the crosstalk between these diseases. We also reveal the potential of antioxidants to ameliorate OS-related injuries.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic extracts from the peel (APE) and pulp (APP) of a traditional apple variety of central Italy, the 'Mela Rosa dei Monti Sibillini', on the damage caused by renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) in rats. Thirty mg per kg b.w. of the extracts were administered intraperitoneally to male adult Wistar rats 3 days before the induction of IRI by pedicle clamping. A significant decrease in the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) was observed in the groups pre-treated with APE when compared with IRI rats. The chemical composition of APE was determined by HPLC-DAD-MSn highlighting a significant amount of proanthocyanidins (52.9 mg g-1), flavonols (42.27 mg g-1) and dihydrochalcones (11.75 mg g-1). These findings indicated that this ancient apple variety is a promising source of nutraceuticals and functional foods helpful to manage complications of renal disorders.

Abstract
Liriodendron tulipifera L. (Magnoliaceae), also known as "tulip tree," is a hardwood plant native to North America, cultivated all over the world and used on an industrial level, especially for its fine wood and to make honey. It has also been traditionally exploited for its antimalarial properties. However, our knowledge about the bioactivity of its essential oil remains patchy. In this research, we focused on the biological evaluation of the volatile fractions obtained from different parts of the plant which are normally discharged by industry, including leaves, flowers, and fruits. For the purpose, the essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Then, they were evaluated as radical scavenging, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative agents by using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, disk diffusion, and MTT methods, respectively. The significant toxicity exhibited on human tumor cells, namely A375 malignant melanoma, HCT116 colon carcinoma, MDA-MB 231 breast adenocarcinoma, and T98G glioblastoma multiforme cell lines, prompted us to study the mechanism of action by acridine orange/ethidium bromide double staining and caspase 3 assays. Our findings shed light on the potential applications of tulip tree derivatives as anticancer drugs.

Abstract
Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (Araliaceae), a popular tonic and dietetic herbal medicine, has been traditionally prescribed in China and other countries to treat affective disorders. The medicinal parts of ginseng, the roots and flower buds, have become increasingly popular as dietary supplements due to the current holistic healthcare trend. We have investigated for the first time the antidepressive actions of the different medicinal parts, namely, the main roots, fibrous roots, and flower buds (in water extract and powder), of garden-cultivated ginseng through behavioral and drug-induced tests in mice. The water extracts, but not the powders of ginseng fibrous roots, flower buds, and main roots (1.5 g of crude drug per kilogram, p.o.), significantly reduced the immobility time in the forced swim test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST); moreover, the water extracts enhanced the 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)-induced head-twitch response and antagonized the action of reserpine in the mouse. We then explored the antidepressive mechanism of action of the ginsenoside Rb1 (Rb1) related to the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its downstream proteins in mice exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Treatment with Rb1 (20 mg/kg, p.o.) for 21 days significantly attenuated the CUMS-induced decrease in the activities of BDNF, tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), protein kinase B (AKT), extracellular regulatory protein kinase (ERK), and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element binding protein (CREB) in the mouse hippocampal CA3 region and prefrontal cortex (PFC). Interestingly, treatment with the novel TrkB antagonist ANA-12 (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) did not alter the level of BDNF but significantly blocked the antidepressive effects of Rb1 on proteins downstream of BDNF in CUMS-treated mice. These results suggest that BDNF–TrkB–CREB signaling may be involved in the antidepressive mechanism of the action of Rb1.

Abstract
Mood disorders occur in 30% of stroke patients, and of these post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most significant. This study aimed to evaluate the antidepressive-like effects and in vivo antioxidant activity of a chemically characterized maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis (Molina) Stuntz) extract obtained from an optimized extraction method, on a murine PSD model. The extraction process was optimized to maximize anthocyanin content, and the phytochemical profile of the extract was evaluated using a multi-methodological approach including a liquid chromatographic method coupled with mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The antidepressive-like activity was investigated through despair swimming and tail suspension tests. The in vivo antioxidant activity was evaluated in mouse brain tissue by measuring the activity of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation products. A number of compounds have been first identified in maqui berry here, including malvidin-glucoside, GABA, choline and trigonelline. Moreover, the results showed that the antidepressive-like activity exerted by the extract, which was found to restore normal mouse behavior in both despair swimming and tail suspension tests, could be linked to its antioxidant activity, leading to the conclusion that maqui berries might be useful for supporting pharmacological therapy of PSD by modulating oxidative stress.

Abstract
We have recently demonstrated that the hydroethanolic extracts of Impatiens glandulifera Royle (Balsaminaceae) have antianxiety effect in mice. The present study was aimed to investigate an antidepressant activity of hyperoside (HYP) and protocatechuic acid (PCA), two polyphenols isolated from the aerial parts of this plant, using the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) in mice. The implication of the monoaminergic system in this effect was assessed and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression was measured. At doses 1.875, 3.75 and 7.5 mg/kg, HYP and PCA significantly reduced immobility in the FST and TST, without affecting locomotor activity of mice. Pretreatment with p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA 100 mg/kg, a serotonin synthesis inhibitor) or α-methyl-DL-tyrosine (AMPT 100 mg/kg, a catecholamine synthesis inhibitor) was able to prevent antidepressant-like effect of HYP and PCA (3.75 mg/kg). Sub-effective doses of fluoxetine (5 mg/kg) or reboxetine (2 mg/kg) were capable of potentiating the effect of a sub-effective dose of HYP (0.94 mg/kg) in the FST. Co-administration of sub-effective dose of PCA (0.94 mg/kg) and reboxetine (2 mg/kg) resulted in reducing immobility in the FST. The antidepressant-like effect of HYP and PCA was also prevented by the administration of sulpiride (50 mg/kg), a D2 antagonist. In addition, HYP (3.75 and 7.5 mg/kg) and PCA (7.5 mg/kg) improved the expression of hippocampal BDNF of mice subjected to TST. Altogether, our findings suggest that HYP and PCA exert antidepressant-like effects in mice, which was possibly mediated by monoaminergic system and the upregulation of BDNF level.

Abstract
Hypericum sampsonii is an important medicinal plant used in Vietnam to treat many diseases such as backache, burns, diarrhea, and swelling. In order to study the chemical constituents in the aerial parts of H. sampsonii, five compounds, including two xanthones (1-2), and three benzophenones (3-5) were isolated from the aerial parts of the H. sampsonii with various chromatographic separations. Their chemical structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic data such as 1D- and 2D-NMR, HR-ESI-MS. Their anti-inflammatory activities were investigated by measuring nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, the DPPH radical scavenging was evaluated. As the obtained results, compound 5 showed the strongest inhibitory activity against LPS-stimulated NO production in RAW264.7 cells with IC50 value ranging from 2.00 ± 0.34 µM.

Abstract
Background: Considering the enormous progress in the field of neuropharmacology and its global importance, as well as the lack of bibliometric studies examining this field as a whole, it is a high time to assess the prevailing topics and citation performances of its research works. Methods: Web of Science (WoS) was searched to identify relevant neuropharmacology articles, which were analyzed with reference to (1) publication year, (2) journal title, (3) total citation count, (4) authorship, (5) WoS category, and (6) manuscript type. The identified manuscripts were analyzed with VOSviewer for further bibliometric parameters, such as citation analysis of institutions, countries/regions, and journals, and to visualize the citation patterns of the terms appearing in the titles and abstracts. Results: The literature search resulted in 43,354 manuscripts. Nearly 98% of them were published since the 1990s. The majority of the manuscripts were original articles (n = 31,360) and reviews (n = 11,266). The top five WoS categories associated with the analyzed manuscripts were Pharmacology/Pharmacy (n = 14,892, 34.3%), Neurosciences (n = 11,747, 27.1%), Clinical Neurology (n = 4,981, 11.5%), Psychiatry (n = 4,464, 10.3%), and Biochemistry/Molecular Biology (n = 4,337, 10.0%). Seven of the top ten most prolific institutions were located in the USA, and one each in Canada, Italy, and the UK, respectively. Manuscripts mentioning certain molecules or pharmaceuticals had high citations per manuscript, such as those reporting about anandamide, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), L-glutamate, clozapine, and curcumin. These terms with at least 50 citations per manuscript were mostly related to cannabis and anti-psychotic drugs, with some dealing with anti-epilepsy effects and Alzheimer's disease. Conclusion: We have identified and analyzed all neuropharmacology articles published since the 1990s. Importantly, the area of neuropharmacology research has been growing steadily due to the global trend in population aging and associated with this continuously increasing number of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders worldwide. It is hoped that identification of new pharmaceutically useful molecules or new clinical applications will continue in the future, in order to improve clinical outcomes and to further strengthen the field of neuropharmacology, a research area cross-linking basic and clinical sciences.
