Comprehensive assessment of microalgal-based treatment processes for dairy wastewater

The dairy industry is becoming one of the biggest sectors within the global food industry, and these industries use almost 34% of the water. The amount of water used is governed by the production process and the technologies employed in the plants. Consequently, the dairy industries generate almost 0.2-10 L of wastewater per liter of processed milk, which must be treated before being discharged into water bodies. The cultivation of microalgae in a mixotrophic regime using dairy wastewater enhances biomass growth, productivity, and the accumulation of value-added product. The generated biomass can be converted into biofuels, thus limiting the dependence on petroleum-based crude oil. To fulfill the algal biorefinery model, it is important to utilize every waste stream in a cascade loop. Additionally, the harvested water generated from algal biomass production can be recycled for further microalgal growth. Economic and sustainable wastewater management, along with proper reclamation of nutrients from dairy wastewater, is a promising approach to mitigate the problem of water scarcity. A bibliometric study revealing limited work on dairy wastewater treatment using microalgae for biofuel production. And, limited work is reported on the pretreatment of dairy wastewater via physicochemical methods before microalgal-based treatment. There are still significant gaps remains in large-scale cultivation processes. It is also crucial to discover robust strains that are highly compatible with the specific concentration of contaminants, as this will lead to increased yields and productivity for the targeted bio-product. Finally, research on reutilization of culture media in photobioreactor is necessary to augument the productivity of the entire process. Therefore, the incorporation of the microalgal biorefinery with the wastewater treatment concept has great potential for promoting ecological sustainability.

A review of salty waste stream management in the Australian dairy industry

Saline wastewater is a by-product of cheese manufacturing and whey processing that can have serious environmental and economic consequences. Salty streams originating from dairy processing operations include chromatography wastes, clean-in-place wastewater, acid whey, salty whey and waste generated from whey demineralization processes such as nanofiltration, electrodialysis and ion exchange. With the participation of the major dairy companies in Australia, an industry wide survey was conducted to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the management strategies for these salty waste streams. High salinity waste streams are commonly directed to evaporation ponds. However, environmental impacts from land degradation, odour and dust have prevented the construction of further evaporation ponds in some areas of Australia. The survey results also show that disposal to municipal trade waste is not always effective, as the current levels of some salinity-related parameters are significantly higher than the levels allowed by the local water/environmental authorities. For high salinity streams, salt removal can lead to more substantial savings in trade waste charges compared to wastewater volume reduction. Thus, salt removal and recovery from salty waste streams has become a major focus of the sustainability agenda of the Australian dairy industry.

Use of fluorescence quenching method to measure sorption constants of phenolic xenoestrogens onto humic fractions from sediment

Humic substance (HS) in sediment can affect hydrophobic organic compound distribution, transportation, bioavailability, and toxicity. This study investigated the HS (BKHS) extracted from sediment and separated it into low molecular humic (LMHS, <1kDa) and high molecular humic substances (HMHS, 1kDa-0.45μm). Nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), and bisphenol A (BPA) have a significant sorption capacity for HMHS and BKHS solutions. They are xenoestrogenic endocrine-disrupting compounds that are widely produced and discharged to the environment. The log KHS values of the BKHS and HMHS solutions were between 4.74-5.09Lkg-C(-1) and 4.57-5.09Lkg-C(-1), respectively. However, the three compounds were not sorbed by the LMHS solution. The average values of SUVA254 for HMHS and LMHS were 4.29 and 1.31Lm(-1)mg-C(-1) and the average values of A250-400 for HMHS and LMHS were 18.1 and 4.51nmcm(-1), respectively. The HMHS peak position in the fluorescence excitation/emission matrix at longer wavelengths corresponded to the peak position of LMHS, which indicates that the HMHS had a higher degree of humification than the LMHS. The results suggested that the KHS value's dominant factor was the degree of HS humification.

Cheese whey wastewater: characterization and treatment

Cheese whey wastewater (CWW) is a strong organic and saline effluent whose characterization and treatment have not been sufficiently addressed. CWW composition is highly variable due to raw milk used, the fraction of non valorized cheese whey and the amount of cleaning water used. Cheese whey wastewater generation is roughly four times the volume of processed milk. This research tries to conduct an exhaustive compilation of CWW characterization and a comparative study between the different features of CWW, cheese whey (CW), second cheese whey (SCW) and dairy industry effluents. Different CWW existing treatments have also been critically analyzed. The advantages and drawbacks in aerobic/anaerobic processes have been evaluated. The benefits of physicochemical pre-stages (i.e. precipitation, coagulation-flocculation) in biological aerobic systems are assessed. Pre-treatments based on coagulation or basic precipitation might allow the application of aerobic biodegradation treatments with no dilution requirements. Chemical precipitation with lime or NaOH produces a clean wastewater and a sludge rich in organic matter, N and P. Their use in agriculture may lead to the implementation of Zero discharge systems.
