Abstract
A substantial amount of process waste is generated during the manufacture of soft-wheat products (SWPs), such as biscuits/cookies, crackers, wafers, and cakes. A small portion of waste is reused in specific biscuits, whereas the rest is usually discarded. This study aimed to investigate the suitability of this waste for the co-production of bioethanol and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs or biodiesel). Two groups of waste generated in the SWP industry were included in the study: (a) the waste of low-moisture (<10%) biscuits, crackers, and wafer sheets with no fillings and/or coatings, and (b) the waste of high-moisture (>10%) biscuits, crackers, wafers, and cakes with fillings and/or coatings. The study involved extracting each sample with hexane, and the recovered fat was converted to the FAME through alkali-catalyzed transesterification. The remaining carbohydrate-rich fraction was then converted to bioethanol through amylolytic hydrolysis and yeast fermentation. A great portion (92.42%-93.17%) of the fat was extracted from the wastes and converted to the FAME with adequate yields (13.81-14.55 g FAME/g waste, dm) and acceptable conversion efficiencies (85.19%-89.04%). However, bioethanol production from the defatted carbohydrate-rich fractions proceeded rather slowly, yielding only 16.54-18.02 (g ethanol per g of waste, dm), corresponding to fermentation efficiencies ranging from 43.32% to 48.29%. Upon the co-production of FAME and ethanol, a considerable amount (50.93%-53.08%) of waste solids remained in the residue fraction. These findings indicated that production of the FAME with adequate yields and conversion efficiencies is viable from the SWP industry wastes; however, bioethanol yields and fermentation efficiencies are rather limited, which warrants further investigation. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The soft-wheat processing industry generates 1%-5% of total production as waste. The waste was studied to produce FAME and bioethanol. The fat was extracted from the waste and converted to FAME. Bioethanol yields and fermentation efficiencies are limited due to dough modifiers and antimicrobial additives used in SWP production. Further research is required to improve ethanol yield.

Abstract
Enzymatic pretreatment is an effective method which can improve the anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency of household food waste (HFW). As an alternative to expensive commercial enzymes, mixed enzymes (MEs) produced in situ from HFW by solid-state fermentation (SSF) can greatly promote the hydrolysis rate of HFW and achieve advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) economically sustainable. In this paper, strategies for improving the efficiency of the enzyme-production process and the abundance of MEs are briefly discussed, including SSF, fungal co-cultivation, and stepwise fermentation. The feasibility of using HFW as an applicable substrate for producing MEs (amylase, protease, and lignocellulose-degrading enzymes) and its potential advantages in HFW anaerobic digestion are comprehensively illustrated. Based on the findings, an integrated AAD process of HFW pretreated with MEs produced in situ was proposed to maximise bioenergy recovery. The mass balance results showed that the total volatile solids removal rate could reach 98.56%. Moreover, the net energy output could reach 2168.62 MJ/t HFW, which is 9.79% higher than that without in situ-produced MEs and pretreatment. Finally, perspectives for further study are presented.

Abstract
Food waste is a lucrative source of complex nutrients, which can be transformed into a multitude of bioproducts by the aid of microbial cell factories. The current study emphasizes isolating Glucoamylase enzyme (GA) producing strains that can effectively break down mixed food waste (MW), which serves as a substrate for biomanufacturing. The screening procedure relied heavily on the growth of isolated fungi on starch agar media, to specifically identify the microbes with the highest starch hydrolysis potential. A strain displayed the highest GA activity of 2.9 ± 0.14 U/ml which was selected and identified as Aspergillus fumigatus via molecular methods of identification. Exposure of the A. fumigatus with 200 mM Ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS) led to a 23.79% increase compared to the wild-type GA. The growth conditions like cultivation temperature or the number of spores in the inoculum were investigated. Further, maximum GA activity was exhibited at pH 5, 55 °C, and at 5 mM Ca2+ concentration. The GA showed thermostability, retaining activity even after long periods of exposure to temperatures as high as 95 °C. The improvement of hydrolysis of MW was achieved by Taguchi design where a maximum yield of 0.57 g g-1 glucose was obtained in the hydrolysate. This study puts forth the possibility that mixed food waste, despite containing spices and other microbial growth-inhibitory substances, can be efficiently hydrolyzed to release glucose units, by robust fungal cell factories. The glucose released can then be utilized as a carbon source for the production of value-added products.

Abstract
The present study develops a novel concept of using waste media as an algal nutrient resource compared to the usual growth media with the aid of growth kinetics study and metabolite production abilities. Food- and agri-compost wastes are compact structures with elemental compounds for microbial media. As a part of the study, environ-burden wastes (3:1) as a food source for photosynthetic algae as a substitute for the costly nutrient media were proposed. The environment-burden waste was also envisaged for macromolecule production, i.e., 99200 μg/ml lipid, 112.5 μg/ml protein, and 8.75 μg/ml carbohydrate with different dilutions of agri-waste, bold basal media (BBM), and Food waste, respectively. The fabricated growth kinetics and dynamics showcased the unstructured models of different photosynthetic algal growth phases and the depiction of productivity and kinetic parameters. The theoretical maximum biomass concentration (Xp) was found to be more (0.871) with diluted agricompost media than the usual BBM (0.697). The XLim values were found to be 0.362, 0.323 and 0.209 for BBM, diluted agri-compost media and diluted food waste media, respectively. Overall, the study proposes a cleaner approach of utilizing the wastes as growth media through a circular economy approach which eventually reduces the growth media cost with integrated macromolecule production capabilities.

Abstract
Cationic and ionizable cationic lipids are broadly applied as auxiliary agents, but their use is associated with adverse effects. If these excipients are rapidly degraded to endogenously occurring metabolites such as amino acids and fatty acids, their toxic potential can be minimized. So far, synthesized and evaluated biodegradable cationic and ionizable cationic lipids already showed promising results in terms of functionality and safety. Within this review, an overview about the different types of such biodegradable lipids, the available building blocks, their synthesis and cleavage by endogenous enzymes is provided. Moreover, the relationship between the structure of the lipids and their toxicity is described. Their application in drug delivery systems is critically discussed and placed in context with the lead compounds used in mRNA vaccines. Moreover, their use as preservatives is reviewed, guidance for their design is provided, and an outlook on future developments is given.

Abstract
Via combination catalysis with deep eutectic solvent lactic acid:betaine (chemocatalyst) and HMFOMUT cell (biocatalyst: E. coli HMFOMUT whole-cell), one-pot manufacture of 2,5-furandimethanol from waste bioresource was constructed in a chemoenzymatic approach. With bread waste (50 g/L) as substrate, the 5-hydroxymethylfuran yield reached 44.2 Cmol% (based on bread waste) by lactic acid:betaine (15 wt%) at 180 °C for 15 min. With glucose as co-substrate, HMFOMUT could transform 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (150 mM) to 2,5-furandimethanol (84.5 % yield) after 1 day at 37 °C and pH 7.0. In lactic acid:betaine-H2O, HMFOMUT effectively converted bread-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-furandimethanol in a productivity of 700 kg 2,5-furandimethanol per kg 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (230 kg 2,5-furandimethanol per kg bread). In an eco-friendly lactic acid:betaine system, an effective one-pot chemoenzymatic strategy was firstly developed to convert bread waste into 2,5-furandimethanol, which would reduce the operation cost and has potential application value for valorizing waste food bioresource into value-added furan.

Abstract
In this present study, the production of poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) from food waste was investigated and critical factors were evaluated. The economic feasibility of the process was investigated, as well as the minimum selling price (MSP) of PBS and sensitivity analysis of economic factors based on critical input parameters. 1,4-butanediol price and solvent usage in PBS purification significantly impacted economics during the process. In this process, the MSP of PBS was 3.5 $/kg. The Monte Carlo simulation technique was used to determine the uncertainty in the MSP of PBS. The plant's return on investment (ROI), payback period, internal rate of return (IRR), and net present value (NPV) were 15.79 %, 6.33 years, 16.48 %, and 58,879,000 USD, respectively. The environmental impact factors were evaluated. The results showed the GHG emission from the process was 5.19 kg CO2-eq/kg of PBS which is low than conventional PBS production.

Air pollution is
a central problem faced by industries during the
production process. The control of this pollution is essential for
the environment and living organisms as it creates harmful effects.
Biofiltration is a current pollution management strategy that concerns
removing odor, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other pollutants
from the air. Recently, this approach has earned vogue globally due
to its low-cost and straightforward technique, effortless function,
high reduction efficacy, less energy necessity, and residual consequences
not needing additional remedy. There is a critical requirement to
consider sustainable machinery to decrease the pollutants arising
within air and water sources. For managing these different kinds of
pollutant reductions, biofiltration techniques have been utilized.
The contaminants are adsorbed upon the medium exterior and are metabolized
to benign outcomes through immobilized microbes. Biofiltration-based
designs have appeared advantageous in terminating dangerous pollutants
from wastewater or contaminated air in recent years. Biofiltration
uses the possibilities of microbial approaches (bacteria and fungi)
to lessen the broad range of compounds and VOCs. In this review, we
have discussed a general introduction based on biofiltration and the
classification of air pollutants based on different sources. The history
of biofiltration and other mechanisms used in biofiltration techniques
have been discussed. Further, the crucial factors of biofilters that
affect the performance of biofiltration techniques have been discussed
in detail. Finally, we concluded the topic with current challenges
and future prospects.

The present study designed an innovative route for two-step biodiesel recovery from lipidic food waste followed by microalgae cultivation. Optimization of oil conversion showed the highest fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) recovery of 92.6% (lipid basis). Microalgal lipid accumulation enhanced by the increased lipid-free waste hydrolysate ratio in the medium, where the maximum lipid content of 26.2 dw% was recorded using 50% hydrolysate. Application of 30% hydrolysate ratio resulted in the maximum recorded lipid productivity, which was 99.4% higher than that of the control and insignificant with 40% hydrolysate. Waste oil-derived FAMEs showed 69.0% higher saturated fatty acids (SFAs) proportion than that of algal lipids. In contrast, the highest polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) proportion (48.8% of total fatty acids) was recorded in microalgal lipids. The study concluded that mixing microalgal lipids with waste oil (1:1, w/w) provides a desirable practical route for enhanced biodiesel production complying with the international standards.

Abstract
Various fungal species can degrade lignocellulolytic materials with their enzyme cocktails composed of cellulolytic and lignolytic enzymes. In this work, seven fungal species (Mucor indicus DSM 2185, Paecilomyces variotii CBS 372.70, Myceliophthora thermophila CBS 663.74, Thielavia terrestris CBS 456.75, Botryosphaeria dothidea JCM 2738, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. langenariae JCM 9293, and Fusarium verticillioides JCM 23107) and four nutrient media were used in the screening for effective lignocellulose degrading enzymes. From the seven tested fungi, F. oxysporum and F. verticilliodes, along with nutrient medium 4, were selected as the best medium and producers of lignocellulolytic enzymes based on the determined xylanase (>4 U mg-1) and glucanase activity (≈2 U mg-1). Nutrient medium 4 supplemented with pretreated corn cobs was used in the production of lignocellulolytic enzymes by sequential solid-state and submerged cultivation of F. oxysporum, F. verticilliodes, and a mixed culture of both strains. F. oxysporum showed 6 times higher exoglucanase activity (3.33 U mg-1) after 5 days of cultivation in comparison with F. verticillioides (0.55 U mg-1). F. oxysporum also showed 2 times more endoglucanase activity (0.33 U mg-1). The mixed culture cultivation showed similar endo- and exoglucanase activities compared to F. oxysporum (0.35 U mg-1; 7.84 U mg-1). Maximum xylanase activity was achieved after 7 days of cultivation of F. verticilliodes (≈16 U mg-1), while F. oxysporum showed maximum activity after 9 days that was around 2 times lower compared to that of F. verticilliodes. The mixed culture achieved maximum xylanase activity after only 4 days, but the specific activity was similar to activities observed for F. oxysporum. It can be concluded that both fungal strains can be used as producers of enzyme cocktails for the degradation of lignocellulose containing raw materials, and that corn cobs can be used as an inducer for enzyme production.

Abstract
Residual biomass is acknowledged as a key sustainable feedstock for the transition towards circular and low fossil carbon economies to supply whether energy, chemical, material and food products or services. The latter is receiving increasing attention, in particular in the perspective of decoupling nutrition from arable land demand. In order to provide a comprehensive overview of the technical possibilities to convert residual biomasses into edible ingredients, we reviewed over 950 scientific and industrial records documenting existing and emerging waste-to-nutrition pathways, involving over 150 different feedstocks here grouped under 10 umbrella categories: (i) wood-related residual biomass, (ii) primary crop residues, (iii) manure, (iv) food waste, (v) sludge and wastewater, (vi) green residual biomass, (vii) slaughterhouse by-products, (viii) agrifood co-products, (ix) C1 gases and (x) others. The review includes a detailed description of these pathways, as well as the processes they involve. As a result, we proposed four generic building blocks to systematize waste-to-nutrition conversion sequence patterns, namely enhancement, cracking, extraction and bioconversion. We further introduce a multidimensional representation of the biomasses suitability as potential as nutritional sources according to (i) their content in anti-nutritional compounds, (ii) their degree of structural complexity and (iii) their concentration of macro- and micronutrients. Finally, we suggest that the different pathways can be grouped into eight large families of approaches: (i) insect biorefinery, (ii) green biorefinery, (iii) lignocellulosic biorefinery, (iv) non-soluble protein recovery, (v) gas-intermediate biorefinery, (vi) liquid substrate alternative, (vii) solid-substrate fermentation and (viii) more-out-of-slaughterhouse by-products. The proposed framework aims to support future research in waste recovery and valorization within food systems, along with stimulating reflections on the improvement of resources' cascading use.

Abstract
In this study, co-pyrolysis of single-use face mask (for the protection against COVID-19) and food waste was investigated for the purpose of energy and resource valorization of the waste materials. To this end, disposable face mask (a piece of personal protective equipment) was pyrolyzed to produce fuel-range chemicals. The pyrolytic gas evolved from the pyrolysis of the single-use face mask consisted primarily of non-condensable permanent hydrocarbons such as CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H6, and C3H8. An increase in pyrolysis temperature enhanced the non-condensable hydrocarbon yields. The pyrolytic gas had a HHV of >40 MJ kg-1. In addition, hydrocarbons with wider carbon number ranges (e.g., gasoline-, jet fuel-, diesel-, and motor oil-range hydrocarbons) were produced in the pyrolysis of the disposable face mask. The yields of the gasoline-, jet fuel-, and diesel-range hydrocarbons obtained from the single-use mask were highest at 973 K. The pyrolysis of the single-use face mask yielded 14.7 wt% gasoline-, 18.4 wt% jet fuel-, 34.1 wt% diesel-, and 18.1 wt% motor oil-range hydrocarbons. No solid char was produced via the pyrolysis of the disposable face mask. The addition of food waste to the pyrolysis feedstock led to the formation of char, but the presence of the single-use face mask did not affect the properties and energy content of the char. More H2 and less hydrocarbons were produced by co-feeding food waste in the pyrolysis of the disposable face mask. The results of this study can contribute to thermochemical management and utilization of everyday waste as a source of energy.

Abstract
In this study, the co-pyrolysis of food waste with lignocellulosic biomass (wood bark) in a continuous-flow pyrolysis reactor was considered as an effective strategy for the clean disposal and value-added utilization of the biowaste. To achieve this aim, the effects of major co-pyrolysis parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, the flow rate of the pyrolysis medium (nitrogen (N2) gas), and the blending ratio of food waste/wood bark on the yields, compositions, and properties of three-phase pyrolytic products (i.e., non-condensable gases, condensable compounds, and char) were investigated. The temperature and the food waste/wood bark ratio were found to affect the pyrolytic product yields, while the N2 flow rate did not. More non-condensable gases and less char were produced at higher temperatures. For example, as the temperature was increased from 300 °C to 700 °C, the yield of non-condensable gases increased from 6.3 to 17.5 wt%, while the yield of char decreased from 63.6 to 30.6 wt% for the co-pyrolysis of food waste and wood bark at a weight ratio of 1:1. Both the highest yield of hydrogen (H2) gas and the most significant suppression of the formation of phenolic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds were achieved with a combination of food waste and wood bark at a weight ratio of 1:1 at 700 °C. The results suggest that the synergetic effect of food waste and lignocellulosic biomass during co-pyrolysis can be exploited to increase the H2 yield while limiting the formation of phenolic compounds and PAH derivatives. This study has also proven the effectiveness of co-pyrolysis as a process for the valorization of biowaste that is produced by agriculture, forestry, and the food industry, while reducing the formation of harmful chemicals.

Abstract
The high content of solid organics in food waste (FW) results in a low and unstable anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency. Improving methane production rate and process stability is attracting much attention towards advanced AD of FW. The feasibility of advanced AD of FW pretreated with enzyme was investigated by batch experiments and 164 days running of an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor. Simulation study based on the results of batch experiments indicates it is possible to treat enzymatically pretreated FW using an EGSB reactor. During the running of an EGSB reactor, the organic loading rate went up to 20 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L.d, and the total COD removal rate reached 88%. The significance of this study is to achieve an advanced AD of enzymatically pretreated FW with a stable and efficient methane production with biogas residue being reduced greatly.

Co-Fermentation of Food Waste and Municipal Sludge from the Saudi Arabian Environment to Improve Lactic Acid Production by Lactobacillus rhamnosus AW3 Isolated from Date Processing Waste. Abstract
Food waste and municipal sludge were used as the substrates for the biosynthesis of lactic acid in a batch fermentor. The probiotic bacterial strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus AW3 isolated from date processing waste was used to produce lactic acid in a batch fermentor. Co-fermentation enhanced the biosynthesis of lactic acid and decreased substrate inhibition more than mono-substrate fermentation. A maximum yield of 28.4 ± 0.87 g/L of lactic acid was obtained through co-fermentation of food waste and municipal sludge at an optimized ratio of 2:0.5. Lactic acid production was improved by the supplementation of fructose, peptone, and sodium dihydrogen phosphate at pH 5.5 after 48 h fermentation. This production was approximately three-fold higher than that during mono-fermentation of food waste. The tested bacterial strains were obtained from the Microbial Type Culture Collection (MTCC). Lactic acid showed potent antimicrobial activity against pathogenic organisms, such as Bacillus subtilis MTCC 5981 (14 mm), Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 737 (20 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 424 (24 mm), Enterobacter aerogenes MTCC111 (19 mm), Escherichia coli MTCC 443 (18 mm), Penicillium chrysogenum MTCC 5108 (19 mm), and Aspergillus niger MTCC 282 (19 mm). The antimicrobial properties of lactic acid have significant potential to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi and improve probiotic properties. The lactic acid extracted from L. rhamnosus AW3 decreased the pH value of soil (p < 0.01) and increased the availability of soil phosphorus (p < 0.01). These findings demonstrate the bioconversion of food waste and municipal sludge into lactic acid, and the recycling of food wastes in urban areas to enhance soil nutrients.

Abstract
An estimation of the economy of Hermetia illucens and Chlorella pyrenoidosa cultivations as food waste treatment with benefits was carried out. For both organisms, a process scale was assumed to treat 56.3 t of wet food waste per day, which is equivalent to the amount of food waste appearing in a catchment area of 141,000 inhabitants. Using hypothetical insect and heterotrophic microalgae cultivation processes, a daily production of 3.64 t and 7.14 t dried biomass, respectively, can be achieved. For the cultivation of H. illucens, equipment and daily operational costs were estimated at 79,358.15 € and 5,281.56 €, respectively. Equipment and operational costs for the C. pyrenoidosa cultivation was 50 and 6 times higher, respectively. The higher costs reflect the more complex and advanced process compared to H. illucens cultivation. The internal return rate for a plant lifetime of 20 times revealed an economic benefit when C. pyrenoidosa biomass is produced. Nevertheless, both processes were found economically feasible when dried biomass is directly commercialized as food without any further downstream processing. However, extraction and purification of special chemicals, such as unsaturated fatty acids and pigments, can significantly increase the revenue.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to utilize the whole food waste in two stages. In the first stage, the carbohydrate and protein fractions of food waste recovered after enzymatic hydrolysis was used to cultivate heterotrophic microalgae, resulting in biomass yield of 0.346 ± 0.09 g/gsugars and lipid yield of 0.216 ± 0.06 g/gsugars. In the second stage, oil (14.15% w/w) was extracted from food waste after hydrolysis and converted to biodiesel by a two-step transesterification reaction that generated 135.8 g/kgfood waste of fatty acid methyl esters and 13.8 g/kgfood waste of crude glycerol. Finally, crude glycerol obtained from both processes was used at 20 g/L to cultivate heterotrophic microalgae, resulting in a cell dry weight and total lipid concentration of 6.23 g/L and 2.91 g/L, respectively. A total 248.21 g of fatty acid methyl esters were obtained from the 1 kg of food waste through this integrated process.

Abstract
Protein is a potential resource for fermentation, which is one of the rate limiting factors of fermentation. This study investigated some of the regularities of protein on dark fermentation for acid production, whey (82% protein) liquid was used to study the effect of varying headspace pressure (HP; 0.02-0.10 MPa), protein concentration (6.25-18.75 g/L) and hydraulic retention time (HRT; 24-48 h) on VFA production. The main fermentation product is acetate and butyrate. Low HP, low substrate concentration and short HRT were favorable for the generation of acid. When the protein concentration was 12.5 g/L and HRT was 24 h, the VFA concentration was up to 8924.190 mg/L at 0.02 MPa, compared to a 61.55% increase under 0.10 MPa. While the HRT was 48 h or the protein concentration was 18.75 g/L, VFA concentration was low and no more n-butyric acid or valeric acid. After variance analysis, we observed a significant effect of the three factors on acid.

Abstract
Valorisation of mixed food and beverage (F&B) waste was studied for the recovery of sugars via saccharification. Glucoamylase and sucrase were employed to hydrolyse the starch and sucrose present in the mixed F&B waste because of the high cost-effectiveness for such recovery. The Michaelis-Menten kinetics model suggests that preservatives and additives in beverages did not inhibit glucoamylase and sucrase during saccharification. High levels of glucose (228.1 g L-1) and fructose (55.7 g L-1) were efficiently produced within 12 h at a solid-to-liquid ratio of 37.5% (w/v) in 2.5 L bioreactors. An overall conversion yield of 0.17 g sugars per g of mixed F&B waste was obtained in mass balance analysis. Lastly, possible industrial applications of the sugar-rich hydrolysate and by-products are discussed. This study is believed to cast insights into F&B waste recycling via biotechnology to produce high-value added products to promote the establishment of a circular bio-economy.

Abstract
Various organic residues occur globally in the form of straw, wood, green biomass, food waste, feces, manure etc. Other utilization strategies apart from anaerobic digestion, composting and incineration are needed to make use of the whole potential of organic residues as sources of various value added compounds. This review compares the cultivation of heterotrophic microalgae and insects using organic residues as nutrient sources and illuminates their potential with regard to biomass production, productivity and yield, and utilization strategies of produced biomasses. Furthermore, cultivation processes as well as advantages and disadvantages of utilization processes are identified and discussed. It was shown that both heterotrophic algae and insects are able to reduce a sufficient amount of organic residues by converting it into biomass. The biomass composition of both organisms is similar which allows similar utilization strategies in food and feed, chemicals and materials productions. Even though insect is the more complex organism, biomass production can be carried out using simple equipment without sterilization and hydrolysis of organic residues. Contrarily, heterotrophic microalgae require a pretreatment of organic residues in form of sterilization and in most cases hydrolysis. Interestingly, the volumetric productivity of insect biomass exceeds the productivity of algal biomass. Despite legal restrictions, it is expected that microalgae and insects will find application as alternative food and feed sources in the future.

Abstract
In this study, a novel biorefinery concept of succinic acid (SA) production from fruit and vegetable wastes (FVWs) hydrolyzed by crude enzyme mixtures through solid state fermentation was designed. Enzyme complex solid mashes from various types of FVWs were on-site produced through solid-state fermentation by Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus oryzae. This solid was then added to FVW suspensions and undergo hydrolysis reaction to generate fermentable sugars and other essential nutrients for bacterial growth and product formation. The subsequent fungal hydrolysis produced 12.00g/L glucose and 13.83g/L fructose using 10% mass ratio (w/v) of FVW. Actinobacillus succinogenes used this FVW hydrolysate as the sole feedstock and produced 27.03g/L of succinic acid with high yield and productivity of 1.18gSA/g sugar and 1.28gL-1h-1, respectively. This work demonstrated that FVWs can be biotransformed to value added products which have considerable potential economics and environmental meaning.

Abstract
This study aimed to produce a high-value platform chemical, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), from food waste and evaluate the catalytic performance of trivalent and tetravalent metals such as AlCl3, CrCl3, FeCl3, Zr(O)Cl2, and SnCl4 for one-pot conversion. Starchy food waste, e.g., cooked rice and penne produced 4.0-8.1 wt% HMF and 46.0-64.8 wt% glucose over SnCl4 after microwave heating at 140 °C for 20 min. This indicated that starch hydrolysis was effectively catalyzed but subsequent glucose isomerization was rate-limited during food waste valorization, which could be enhanced by 40-min reaction to achieve 22.7 wt% HMF from cooked rice. Sugary food waste, e.g., kiwifruit and watermelon, yielded up to 13 wt% HMF over Sn catalyst, which mainly resulted from naturally present fructose. Yet, organic acids in fruits may hinder Fe-catalyzed dehydration by competing for the Lewis sites. In contrast, conversion of raw mixed vegetables as cellulosic food waste was limited by marginal hydrolysis at the studied conditions (120-160 °C and 20-40 min). It is interesting to note that tetravalent metals enabled HMF production at a lower temperature and shorter time, while trivalent metals could achieve a higher HMF selectivity at an elevated temperature. Further studies on kinetics, thermodynamics, and reaction pathways of food waste valorization are recommended.

Abstract
This study aimed to maximize the valorization of bread waste, a typical food waste stream, into hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by improving our kinetic understanding. The highest HMF yield (30mol%) was achieved using SnCl4 as catalyst, which offered strong derived Brønsted acidity and moderate Lewis acidity. We evaluated the kinetic balance between these acidities to facilitate faster desirable reactions (i.e., hydrolysis, isomerization, and dehydration) relative to undesirable reactions (i.e., rehydration and polymerization). Such catalyst selectivity of SnCl4, AlCl3, and FeCl3 was critical in maximizing HMF yield. Higher temperature made marginal advancement by accelerating the undesirable reactions to a similar extent as the desirable pathways. The polymerization-induced metal-impregnated high-porosity carbon was a possible precursor of biochar-based catalyst, further driving up the economic potential. Preliminary economic analysis indicated a net gain of USD 43-236 per kilogram bread waste considering the thermochemical-conversion cost and chemical-trading revenue.

Abstract
Succinate dehydrogenase inactivation in Yarrowia lipolytica has been demonstrated for robust succinic acid production, whereas the inefficient glucose metabolism has hindered its practical application. In this study, a simple and efficient adaptive evolution strategy via cell immobilization was conducted in shake flasks, with an aim to restore the glucose metabolism of Y. lipolytica mutant PGC01003. After 21 days with 14 generations evolution, glucose consumption rate increased to 0.30 g/L/h in YPD medium consisting of 150 g/L initial glucose concentration, while poor yeast growth was observed in the same medium using the initial strain without adaptive evolution. Succinic acid productivity of the evolved strain also increased by 2.3-fold, with stable cell growth in YPD medium with high initial glucose concentration. Batch fermentations resulted in final succinic acid concentrations of 65.7 g/L and 87.9 g/L succinic acid using YPD medium and food waste hydrolysate, respectively. The experimental results in this study show that a simple and efficient strategy could facilitate the glucose uptake rate in succinic acid fermentation using glucose-rich substrates.

Abstract
This study aimed to transform food waste into a value-added chemical, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and unravel the tangled effects induced by the metal catalysts on each single step of the successive conversion pathway. The results showed that using cooked rice and bread crust as surrogates of starch-rich food waste, yields of 8.1-9.5% HMF and 44.2-64.8% glucose were achieved over SnCl4 catalyst. Protons released from metal hydrolysis and acidic by-products rendered Brønsted acidity to catalyze fructose dehydration and hydrolysis of glycosidic bond. Lewis acid site of metals could facilitate both fructose dehydration and glucose isomerization via promoting the rate-limiting internal hydride shift, with the catalytic activity determined by its electronegativity, electron configuration, and charge density. Lewis acid site of a higher valence also enhanced hydrolysis of polysaccharide. However, the metals also catalyzed undesirable polymerization possibly by polarizing the carbonyl groups of sugars and derivatives, which should be minimized by process optimization.

Abstract
Food waste recycling via fungal hydrolysis and lactic acid (LA) fermentation has been investigated. Hydrolysates derived from mixed food waste and bakery waste were rich in glucose (80.0-100.2gL(-1)), fructose (7.6gL(-1)) and free amino nitrogen (947-1081mgL(-1)). In the fermentation with Lactobacillus casei Shirota, 94.0gL(-1) and 82.6gL(-1) of LA were produced with productivity of 2.61gL(-1)h(-1) and 2.50gL(-1)h(-1) for mixed food waste and bakery waste hydrolysate, respectively. The yield was 0.94gg(-1) for both hydrolysates. Similar results were obtained using food waste powder hydrolysate, in which 90.1gL(-1) of LA was produced with a yield and productivity of 0.92gg(-1) and 2.50gL(-1)h(-1). The results demonstrate the feasibility of an efficient bioconversion of food waste to LA and a decentralized approach of food waste recycling in urban area.

Abstract
A drawback of biotechnological processes, where microorganisms convert biomass constituents, such as starch, cellulose, hemicelluloses, lipids, and proteins, into wanted products, is the economic feasibility. Particularly the cost of nitrogen sources in biotechnological processes can make up a large fraction of total process expenses. To further develop the bioeconomy, it is of considerable interest to substitute cost-intensive by inexpensive nitrogen sources. The aim of this mini-review was to provide a comprehensive insight of utilization methods of protein-rich residues, such as fish waste, green biomass, hairs, and food waste. The methods described include (i) production of enzymes, (ii) recovery of bioactive compounds, and/or (iii) usage as nitrogen source for microorganisms in biotechnological processes. In this aspect, the utilization of protein-rich residues, which are conventionally considered as waste, allows the development of value-adding processes for the production of bioactive compounds, biomolecules, chemicals, and materials.

Abstract
In this study, an advanced biorefinery technology that uses mixed bakery waste has been developed to produce l-lactic acid using an adaptively evolved Thermoanaerobacterium aotearoense LA1002-G40 in a non-sterilized system. Under these conditions, mixed bakery waste was directly hydrolysed by Aspergillus awamori and Aspergillus oryzae, resulting in a nutrient-rich hydrolysate containing 83.6g/L glucose, 9.5 g/L fructose and 612 mg/L free amino nitrogen. T. aotearoense LA1002-G40 was evaluated and then adaptively evolved to grow in this nutrient-rich hydrolysate. Using a 5-L fermenter, the overall lactic acid production from mixed bakery waste was 0.18 g/g with a titer, productivity and yield of 78.5 g/L, 1.63 g/L/h and 0.85 g/g, respectively. This is an innovative procedure involving a complete bioconversion process for l-lactic acid produced from mixed bakery waste under non-sterilized conditions. The proposed process could be potentially applied to turn food waste into l-lactic acid in an economically feasible way.

Abstract
A techno-economic study of food waste valorization via fungal hydrolysis, microalgae cultivation and production of plasticizer, lactic acid and animal feed was simulated and evaluated by Super-Pro Designer®. A pilot-scale plant was designed with a capacity of 1 metric ton day(-1) of food waste with 20 years lifetime. Two scenarios were proposed with different products: Scenario (I) plasticizer & lactic acid, Scenario (II) plasticizer & animal feed. It was found that only Scenario I was economically feasible. The annual net profits, net present value, payback period and internal rate of return were US$ 422,699, US$ 3,028,000, 7.56 years and 18.98%, respectively. Scenario II was not economic viable due to a deficit of US$ 42,632 per year. Sensitivity analysis showed that the price of lactic acid was the largest determinant of the profitability in Scenario I, while the impact of the variables was very close in Scenario II.

Abstract
The potential of lipids derived from food-waste and algal biomass (produced from food-waste hydrolysate) for the formation of plasticizers and surfactants is investigated herein. Plasticizers were formed by epoxidation of double bonds of methylated unsaturated fatty acids with in situ generated peroxoformic acid. Assuming that all unsaturated fatty acids are convertible, 0.35 and 0.40 g of plasticizer can be obtained from 1 g of crude algae- or food-waste-derived lipids, respectively. Surfactants were formed by transesterification of saturated and epoxidized fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) with polyglycerol. The addition of polyglycerol would result in a complete conversion of saturated and epoxidized FAMEs to fatty acid polyglycerol esters. This study successfully demonstrates the conversion of food-waste into value-added chemicals using simple and conventional chemical reactions.

Abstract
In this study, a fungal mash rich in hydrolytic enzymes was produced by solid state fermentation (SSF) of waste cake in a simple and efficient manner and was further applied for high-efficiency hydrolysis of mixed food wastes (FW). The enzymatic pretreatment of FW with this fungal mash resulted in 89.1 g/L glucose, 2.4 g/L free amino nitrogen, 165 g/L soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and 64% reduction in volatile solids within 24h. The biomethane yield and production rate from FW pretreated with the fungal mash were found to be respectively about 2.3 and 3.5-times higher than without pretreatment. After anaerobic digestion of pretreated FW, a volatile solids removal of 80.4±3.5% was achieved. The pretreatment of mixed FW with the fungal mash produced in this study is a promising option for enhancing anaerobic digestion of FW in terms of energy recovery and volume reduction.

Abstract
Heterotrophic cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris was investigated in food waste hydrolysate. The highest exponential growth rate in terms of biomass of 0.8day(-1) was obtained in a hydrolysate consisting of 17.9gL(-1) glucose, 0.1gL(-1) free amino nitrogen, 0.3gL(-1) phosphate and 4.8mgL(-1) nitrate, while the growth rate was reduced in higher concentrated hydrolysates. C. vulgaris utilized the nutrients recovered from food waste for the formation of biomass and 0.9g biomass was produced per gram glucose consumed. The microalgal biomass produced in nutrient sufficient batch cultures consisted of around 400mgg(-1) carbohydrates, 200mgg(-1) proteins and 200mgg(-1) lipids. The conversion of nutrients derived from food waste and the balanced biomass composition make C. vulgaris a promising strain for the recycling of food waste in food, feed and fuel productions.

Abstract
In this study, Halomonas boliviensis was cultivated on bakery waste hydrolysate and seawater in batch and fed-batch cultures for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production. Results demonstrated that bakery waste hydrolysate and seawater could be efficiently utilized by Halomonas boliviensis while PHB contents between 10 and 30% (w/w) were obtained. Furthermore, three methods for bakery waste hydrolysis were investigated for feedstock preparation. These include: (1) use of crude enzyme extracts from Aspergillus awamori, (2) Aspergillus awamori solid mashes, and (3) commercial glucoamylase. In the first method, the resultant free amino nitrogen (FAN) concentration in hydrolysates was 150 and 250 mg L−1 after 20 hours at enzyme-to-solid ratios of 6.9 and 13.1 U g−1, respectively. In both cases, the final glucose concentration was around 130–150 g L−1. In the second method, the resultant FAN and glucose concentrations were 250 mg L−1 and 150 g L−1, respectively. In the third method, highest glucose and lowest FAN concentrations of 170–200 g L−1 and 100 mg L−1, respectively, were obtained in hydrolysates after only 5 hours. The present work has generated promising information contributing to the sustainable production of bioplastic using bakery waste hydrolysate.
