Effect of frequency and reaction time in focused ultrasonic pretreatment of energy cane bagasse for bioethanol production

Kinetic and hydrogen production analysis in the sequential valorization of a Populus clone by cold alkaline extraction and pyrolysis

This work employed a two-step biorefining process, consisting of a hemicellulose-rich liquor production through ultrasound-assisted cold alkaline extraction (CAE), followed by thermochemical treatment of the resultant solid phase. The post-CAE solid phase's pyrolytic potential was assessed by application of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Friedman's isoconversional method, and also from hydrogen production. The solid phases remaining after the CAE treatment were more reactive than the untreated raw material. Notably, the alkali concentration employed in the first step was the individual variable most pronounced influence on their activation energy (Ea). Thus, at a degree of conversion α = 0.50, Ea ranged from 109.7 to 254.3 kJ/mol for the solid phases, compared to 177 kJ/mol for the raw material; this value decreased with rising glucan content. At maximal degradation, the post-CAE solid phases produced up to 15.57% v/v more hydrogen than did the untreated raw material.

The biogas upgrading from landfill leachate pretreated with low-frequency ultrasonic: anaerobic digestion performances and energy balance

The efficient biogas production from landfill leachate (LL) is one of hot topics in anaerobic digestion systems. Higher bioavailability of LL can be achieved by application a feasible and promising pretreatment technologies in order to utilize as a substrate for anaerobic reactors. Here, the enhanced bioavailabity of LL using the low-frequency ultrasonic process and energy balance in anaerobic digestion process was estimated within incubation period of 24 days. The optimal performance of low-frequency ultrasonic for LL biodegradability index: sCOD and TVFA were estimated under influencing parameters: ultrasonic density (UD) (0.02-0.14 W/mL) and Ultrasonic time (UT) (0-12 min). Moreover, the effects of low-frequency ultrasonic pretreatment process on biogas production in batch mode anaerobic reactors operated at 37 ± 1 °C were surveyed for daily and cumulative methane production, operational performance and energy balance. An increased sCOD (820 mg/L) and TVFA (659 mg/L) were observed under optimum codition: UD (0.1 W/mL) and UT (10 min). The highest methane production (430 mL) was found in reactor 4, where %15 volume ratio of LL pretreated with low frequency ultrasonic were feed in. Energy balance assessment indicated that output energy for anaerobic reactors assissted with ultrasonic in range of + 6.99 and + 7.98 kJ/g VS removed. Therefore, incorporation the low-frequency ultrasonic and digestion process revealed a promising and economic technique to improve biomethane potential and energy balance from LL.

Non-Thermal Plasma as a Biomass Pretreatment in Biorefining Processes

Climatic changes and the growing population call for innovative solutions that are able to produce biochemicals by adopting environmentally sustainable procedures. The biorefinery concept meets this requirement. However, one of the main drawbacks of biorefineries is represented by the feedstocks’ pretreatment. Lately, scientific research has focused on non-thermal plasma, which is an innovative and sustainable pretreatment that is able to obtain a high sugar concentration. In the present review, literature related to the use of non-thermal plasma for the production of fermentable sugar have been collected. In particular, its sugar extraction, time, and energy consumption have been compared with those of traditional biomass pretreatments. As reported, on one hand, this emerging technology is characterized by low costs and no waste production; on the other hand, the reactor’s configuration must be optimized to reduce time and energy demand.

Cd diminution through microbial mediated degraded lignocellulose maize straw: Batch adsorption and bioavailability trails

Lignocellulose degraded maize straw (LMS) was prepared with the interaction of soil-indigenous microorganisms and further deployed to attenuate the Cd contamination in polluted soil. The Lignocellulose degrading ratio was determined and results revealed the significant degradation of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin by 33.03, 26.7 and 15.97% respectively as compared to pristine maize straw (PS). Moreover, LMS was also categorized through FE-SEM, FTIR, BET analysis, elemental analysis and XPS technique and the analytical results indicated that lignocellulose structure in maize straw was successfully degraded and was involved in metal-ion complexation. Batch sorption trials revealed that Cd²⁺ sorption onto LMS was explained well by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The LMS showed maximum adsorption capacities (9.84 mg g^-1) for Cd²⁺ as compared to PS (3.30 mg g^-1). Moreover, the soil incubation trials (60 days) depicted the availability of Cd decreased by 11.03 and 34.7% with PS and LMS application respectively. The addition of LMS significantly decreased the exchangeable fractions of Cd and ensued an increase in organic matter and Fe-Mn oxides bound fractions. This work clarified the LMS as a promising amendment for effective remediation of Cd-contaminated matrices.

Recent advances in green solvents for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment: Potential of choline chloride (ChCl) based solvents

Biomass wastes exhibit a great potential to be used as a source of non-depleting renewable energy and synthesis of value-added products. The key to the valorization of excess lignocellulosic biomass wastes in the world lies on the pretreatment process to recalcitrant barrier of the lignocellulosic material for the access to useful substrates. A wide range of pretreatment techniques are available and advances in this field is continuously happening, in search for cheap, effective, and environmentally friendly methods. This review starts with an introduction to conventional approaches and green solvents for pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Subsequently, the mechanism of actions along with the advantages and disadvantages of pretreatment techniques were reviewed. The roles of choline chloride (ChCl) in green solvents and their potential applications were also comprehensively reviewed. The collection of ideas in this review serve as an insight for future works or interest on biomass-to-energy conversion using green solvents.

Cellulosic Ethanol: Improving Cost Efficiency by Coupling Semi-Continuous Fermentation and Simultaneous Saccharification Strategies

A novel approach to improve ethanol production from sugarcane bagasse is proposed. Biomass was pretreated with sodium hydroxide, sulfuric, oxalic, and maleic acids (1% w/v) at different temperatures (130–170 °C) and times (10–30 min). The pretreatment with NaOH at 160 °C for 20 min was found to be the most efficient for further enzymatic saccharification. A semi-continuous fermentation system coupled with a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation strategy was used, attaining fermented liquor every 24 h. The amount of enzymes needed for saccharification was optimized, as well as the production time and ethanol concentration. The process occurred with near to complete depletion of glucose, obtaining ethanol concentrations ranging from 8.36 to 10.79% (v/v). The whole system, at bench scale, showed stability over 30 days, and ease of management and control. This strategy may improve cost efficiency in the production of cellulosic ethanol at industrial scale.

Effect of alkaline and sonication pretreatments on the rumen degradability of date palm seeds

The main objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of chemical treatment and sonication (ultrasound) processing on the fiber composition and rumen degradability of date palm seeds (DPS). In the first trial, the effects of incubation or sonication in 4% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on DPS fiber content and ruminal degradability were evaluated. Relative to untreated seeds, the ruminal degradability of DPS neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and organic matter (OM) increased (P < 0.05) for the treated seeds and were highest (P < 0.05) for the sonicated seeds. Relative to untreated seeds, the hemicellulose and lignin content were lower (P < 0.05) for the sonicated seeds, while the cellulose content was higher (P < 0.05) for the incubated seeds. In the second trial, the effects of subjecting DPS to different sonication times (5, 10, 20, and 30 min) were evaluated. The degradability of seeds' NDF and OM were greater (P < 0.05) for the sonicated than unsonicated seeds. The highest NDF degradability was seen after 30 min sonication, whereas the OM degradability was not affected by sonication time (P > 0.05). In the third trial, the effects of subjecting DPS to sonication in different NaOH solutions (1%, 2%, 4% NaOH) were evaluated. Relative to untreated seeds, the rumen degradability of seeds' NDF and OM increased with all NaOH concentrations but was highest (P < 0.05) with the 4% NaOH. In conclusion, our results showed that treating DPS with 4% NaOH increased the seeds' ruminal degradability, and subjecting DPS to sonication further improved their degradability in the rumen.

Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolysis Enhancement by Microwave-Assisted Sulfolane Pretreatment

Sugarcane bagasse is the major by-product of the sugarcane industry and, due to its abundant availability, it has been extensively studied for lignocellulosic bioconversion in the production of bioethanol and other value-added commercial products. In the study presented herein, a combined pretreatment using sulfolane, TiO2 and alkali microwave irradiation (MW-A) was assessed for the dissolution of lignin prior to enzymatic saccharification of holocellulose. Total reducing sugars (TRS) and saccharinic acid yields were investigated. The increase in NaOH concentration up to 5% and in temperature from 120 °C to 140 °C were found to have a positive influence on both yields. While increasing the reaction time from 5 to 60 min only led to an increase in TRS yield <2%, a reaction time of 30 min almost doubled the saccharinic acids production. TRS yields and saccharinic acid production were approximately 5% and 33% higher when the sulfolane-TiO2 reaction medium was used, as compared to MW-A in water, reaching up to 64.8% and 15.24 g/L of saccharinic acids, respectively. The proposed MW-A pretreatment may hold promise for industrial applications, given the good TRS yields obtained, and the associated enzyme and time/energy savings. The use of sulfolane-TiO2 reaction medium is encouraged if saccharinic acids are to be recovered too.

Strategies for the synthesis of fluorinated polyesters

In this work we synthetized three fluorinated polyesters from dimethyl tetrafluorosuccinate (DMTFS), dimethyl hexafluoroglutarate (DMHFG), and dimethyl octafluoroadipate (DMOFA) and ethylene glycol. The influence of parameters like monomer's size, temperature, vacuum, ultrasound and catalyst, on the polyesters synthesis was evaluated. The conversion rates were assessed considering ¹H NMR data and the results disclose the role of ultrasound (US) as crucial to attain high reaction conversion rates (≈20% of increase relatively to the reactions performed in absence of US). The effect of US was more relevant for the higher molecular weight monomers (DMHFG and DMOFA). The use of Candida antarctica lipase (immobilized CALB) marginally favors the synthesis reactions when fixing the other conditions. The size of the starting monomers influenced greatly the reaction conversion rates, as shorter monomers gave rise to high amount of product recovering. All the produced polyesters were isolated and fully characterized by NMR (¹H and ¹⁹F), FTIR, TGA and MALDI-TOF.

Ultrasonic pretreatment effects on the co-pyrolysis of municipal solid waste and paper sludge through orthogonal test

In this study, the influences of ultrasonic pretreatment factors (frequency, power, treatment time) on blends of municipal solid waste (MSW) and paper sludge (PS) with additive (MgO) was explored, through orthogonal experiments design. The optimum operating condition wanted to be acquired. However, for the ultimate (H/C) and ash analysis after pretreatment, solid residue mass and oxygenates compounds contents in products, the influences of factors were in different results. With adding PS unceasingly, the contents of hydrocarbon compounds decreased. And the ultrasonic pretreatment had the obvious influence with high PS percentage. Longer treatment time resulted to the lower content of oxygenates compounds. After adding MgO, the residue mass reduced, which meant MgO had the catalytic action, and the oxygenates compounds content reduced only with 100 kHz, which had the sonochemical effect.

Comparison of ultrasound-assisted ionic liquid and alkaline pretreatment of Eucalyptus for enhancing enzymatic saccharification

Two ultrasound-assisted pretreatment technologies, ultrasound-assisted alkaline and ultrasound-assisted aqueous ionic liquid tetrabutylammonium hydroxide ([TBA][OH]), are compared systematically in regard to enzymatic saccharification. Pretreated Eucalyptus samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, ¹³C cross polarization/magic-angle spinning solid state NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and chemistry composition analysis. These results not only explain the enzymatic saccharification difference between samples from the microstructure level, but also provide helpful information for relevant pretreatment research. Ultrasound-assisted [TBA][OH] pretreatment acquired a significant enhancement in the initial enzymatic rate of cellulose (79.39 mg/g/h), and a reducing sugar yield of 426.6 mg/g at 48 h. The pretreatment combining inexpensive aqueous ionic liquid and ultrasound may provide a promising strategy in the field of bio-refinery because of its unique advantages.

Ultrasound-assisted biological conversion of biomass and waste materials to biofuels: A review

Ultrasound irradiation has been gaining increasing interests over the years to assist biological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass and waste materials to biofuels. As such, this study reviewed the different effects of sonication on pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass and waste materials prior to biofuel production. The mechanisms of ultrasound irradiation as a pre-treatment technique were initially described and the impacts of sonication on disruption of lignocellulosic materials, alteration of the crystalline lattice structure of cellulose molecules, solubilisation of organic matter, reducing sugar production and enzymatic hydrolysis were then reviewed. Subsequently, the influences of ultrasound irradiation on bio-methane, bio-hydrogen and bio-ethanol production were re-evaluated, with most studies reporting enhanced biofuel production from anaerobic digestion or fermentation processes. Nonetheless, despite its positive impacts on biofuel production, sonication was found to be energetically inefficient based on the lab-scale studies reviewed. To conclude, this study reviewed some of the challenges of ultrasound irradiation for enhanced biofuel production while outlining some areas for further research.

Algae to Economically Viable Low-Carbon-Footprint Oil

Algal oil as an alternative to fossil fuel has attracted attention since the 1940s, when it was discovered that many microalgae species can produce large amounts of lipids. Economics and energy security were the motivational factors for a spurt in algae research during the 1970s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Whenever crude prices declined, research on algae stopped. The scenario today is different. Even given low and volatile crude prices ($30-$50/barrel), interest in algae continues all over the world. Algae, with their cure-all characteristics, have the potential to provide sustainable solutions to problems in the energy-food-climate nexus. However, after years of effort, there are no signs of algae-to-biofuel technology being commercialized. This article critically reviews past work; summarizes the current status of the technology; and based on the lessons learned, provides a balanced perspective on a potential path toward commercialization of algae-to-oil technology.

Evaluation of ultrasound assisted potassium permanganate pre-treatment of spent coffee waste

In the present study, novel pre-treatment for spent coffee waste (SCW) has been proposed which utilises the superior oxidising capacity of alkaline KMnO₄ assisted by ultra-sonication. The pre-treatment was conducted for different exposure times (10, 20, 30 and 40min) using different concentrations of KMnO₄ (1, 2, 3, 4, 5%w/v) at room temperature with solid/liquid ratio of 1:10. Pretreating SCW with 4% KMnO₄ and exposing it to ultrasound for 20min resulted in 98% cellulose recovery and a maximum lignin removal of 46%. 1.7 fold increase in reducing sugar yield was obtained after enzymatic hydrolysis of KMnO₄ pretreated SCW as compared to raw. SEM, XRD and FTIR analysis of the pretreated SCW revealed the various effects of pretreatment. Thermal behaviour of the pretreated substrate against the native biomass was also studied using DSC. Ultrasound-assisted potassium permanganate oxidation was found to be an effective pretreatment for SCW, and can be a used as a potential feedstock pretreatment strategy for bioethanol production.

A two-stage pretreatment process using dilute hydrochloric acid followed by Fenton oxidation to improve sugar recovery from corn stover

A two-stage pretreatment process is proposed in this research in order to improve sugar recovery from corn stover. In the proposed process, corn stover is hydrolyzed by dilute hydrochloric acid to recover xylose, which is followed by a Fenton reagent oxidation to remove lignin. 0.7wt% dilute hydrochloric acid is applied in the first stage pretreatment at 120°C for 40min, resulting in 81.0% xylose removal. Fenton reagent oxidation (1g/L FeSO4·7H2O and 30g/L H2O2) is performed at room temperature (about 20°C) for 12 has a second stage which resulted in 32.9% lignin removal. The glucose yield in the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis was 71.3% with a very low cellulase dosage (3FPU/g). This two-stage pretreatment is effective due to the hydrolysis of hemicelluloses in the first stage and the removal of lignin in the second stage, resulting in a very high sugar recovery with a low enzyme loading.
