Catalytic ozonation of reverse osmosis membrane concentrates by catalytic ozonation: Properties and mechanisms

Ni-Mn@KL ozone catalyst was prepared for the efficient treatment of reverse osmosis membrane concentrates. The working conditions and reaction mechanism of the ozone-catalyzed oxidation by Ni-Mn@KL were systematically studied. Then, a comprehensive CRITIC weighting-coupling coordination evaluation model was established. Ni-Mn@KL was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, BET, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and found to have large specific surface area and homogeneous surface dispersion of striped particles. Under the optimum working conditions with an initial pH of 7.9 (raw water), a reaction height-to-diameter ratio of 10:1, an ozone-aeration intensity of 0.3 L/min, and a catalyst filling rate of 10%, the maximum COD removal rate was 60.5%. Free-radical quenching experiments showed that OH oxidation played a dominant role in the Ni-Mn@KL-catalyzed ozone-oxidation system, and the reaction system conformed to the second-order reaction kinetics law. Ni-Mn@KL catalysts were further confirmed to have good catalytic performance and mechanical performance after repeated utilization. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Ni-Mn@KL catalyst can achieve effective treatment of RO film concentrated liquid. High COD removal rate of RO membrane concentrated liquid was obtained at low cost. Ni-Mn@KL catalyst promotes ozone decomposition to produce ·OH and O2 -· oxidized organic matter. The Ni-Mn@KL catalyst can maintain good stability after repeated use. A CRITIC weight-coupling coordination model was established to evaluate the catalytic ozonation.

Improvement of coal gasification reverse osmosis concentrate treatment by Cu-Co-Mn/AC catalytic ozonation

Approximately 20% of concentrate will be produced from coal gasification wastewater after reverse osmosis treatment. The organic matter contained in the concentrate affects its evaporation crystallisation; therefore, the refractory organics must be removed. In this study, Cu-Co-Mn/AC catalytic ozonation was used to treat reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC). With the addition of the Cu-Co-Mn/AC catalyst, the production of ·OH increased by 82 μmol/L, thereby enhancing the ozonation performance. The pH, ozone dosage, and catalyst dosage all affected the catalytic ozonation performance. By constructing a response surface model, it was found that the catalyst dosage had the most significant effect on the catalytic ozonation performance. The predicted optimal reaction conditions were pH = 9.02, ozone dosage = 1.08 g/L, and catalyst dosage = 1.33 g/L, under which the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal reached a maximum of 81.49%.

In silico assessment of household level closed water cycles: Towards extreme decentralization

Water management in most of the developed world is currently practiced in a highly centralized manner, leading to major infrastructure and energy costs to transport water. To decrease the impacts of water scarcity and climate change, the decentralization of water can increase local robustness. In extremis, decentralization can involve building or house level water supply and treatment. Here, we constructed a MATLAB/Simulink model for two decentralized water management configurations at the household level, assuming the socio-environmental setting of Flanders, Belgium. Independence from the potable water grid and sewer system was pursued through rainwater harvesting, reuse of wastewater streams fit-for-purpose, and discharge via infiltration. The mass balance for water was calculated over the system boundaries showing high potential for independence from the grid with a reasonable treatment train and storage options. Next, the risk of contaminant accumulation within the circular system was assessed, showing a key limitation on decentralized system performance necessitating a system purge. Up to 59% of system rainwater usage was due to the replacement of this purge. Employing treatment units with high (95%) contaminant rejection efficiencies eliminated contaminant accumulation issues. The raw model output was quantitatively assessed by constructing four newly proposed key performance indicators (KPIs), quantifying system independence, circularity, drought tolerance and local water body recharge, which allowed for facilitated system comparison and communication to stakeholders. A sensitivity analysis was performed in which the effect of input parameter variability and uncertainty on system performance was quantified. The sensitivity analysis showed the importance of water recovery and contaminant removal efficiencies of the applied treatment technologies on system performance when contaminant accumulation in the system forms an issue. In systems not severely affected by pollutant accumulation, parameters such as inhabitant number and roof surface had the largest effect. As a whole, this work shows the potential of extreme decentralization of water systems and addresses the obstacle towards implementation formed by the accumulation of contaminants due to system circularity. Additionally, this study provides a framework for operational and technological decision support of decentralized household-scale water systems and, by extension, for future water policy-making.

Ammonium-assimilating microbiome: A halophilic biosystem rationally optimized by carbon to nitrogen ratios with stable nitrogen conversion and microbial structure

The contradiction between theoretical metabolism of ammonium assimilation and experiential understanding of conventional biosystems makes the rational optimization of the ammonium-assimilating microbiome through carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios perplexing. The effect of different C/N ratios on ammonium-assimilating biosystems was investigated in saline wastewater treatment. C/N ratios significantly hindered the nutrient removal efficiency, but ammonium-assimilating biosystems maintained functional stability in nitrogen conversions and microbial communities. With sufficient biomass, higher than 86% ammonium and 73% phosphorus were removed when C/N ratios were higher than 25. Ammonium assimilation dominated the nitrogen metabolism in all biosystems even under relatively low C/N ratios, evidenced by the extremely low abundances of nitrification functional genes. Different C/N ratios did not significantly change the bacterial community structure of ammonium-assimilating biosystems. It is anticipated that the ammonium-assimilating biosystem with advantages of clear metabolic pathway and easy optimization can be applied to nutrient removal and recovery in saline environments.

Separation, anti-fouling, and chlorine resistance of the polyamide reverse osmosis membrane: From mechanisms to mitigation strategies

Membrane technology has been widely used in the wastewater treatment and seawater desalination. In recent years, the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane represented by polyamide (PA) has made great progress because of its excellent properties. However, the conventional PA RO membranes still have some scientific problems, such as membrane fouling, easy degradation after chlorination, and unclear mechanisms of salt retention and water flux, which seriously impede the widespread use of RO membrane technology. This paper reviews the progress in the research and development of the RO membrane, with key focus on the mechanisms and strategies of the contemporary separation, anti-fouling and chlorine resistance of the PA RO membrane. This review seeks to provide state-of-the-art insights into the mitigation strategies and basic mechanisms for some of the key challenges. Under the guidance of the fundamental understanding of each mechanism, operation and modification strategies are discussed, and reasonable analysis is carried out, which can address some key technical challenges. The last section of the review focuses on the technical issues, challenges, and future perspective of these mechanisms and strategies. Advances in synergistic mechanisms and strategies of the PA RO membranes have been rarely reviewed; thus, this review can serve as a guide for new entrants to the field of membrane water treatment and established researchers.

Catalytic ozonation of 2, 2'-methylenebis (4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) over nano-Fe3O4@cow dung ash composites: Optimization, toxicity, and degradation mechanisms

Composite magnetic oxide at cow dung ash, nano-Fe₃O₄@cow dung ash (nano-Fe₃O₄@CDA), was used as catalytic material for the degradation of 2, 2'-methylenebis (4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenol) (AO 2246) in real biologically pretreated landfill leachate. The Fe₃O₄@CDA composite exhibited catalytic ozonation activity and allowed material separation and magnetic recovery. The effects of several operating parameters including O₃ concentration, catalyst dosage, temperature and scavengers were evaluated in parallel. Over 70% of AO 2246 were removed by the nano-Fe₃O₄@CDA/O₃ system under optimum conditions within 120min reaction time. The EPR, GC-MS and free-radical quenching experiments expatiated the mechanism of this degradation process. It was confirmed that the AO 2246 was degraded efficiently in this catalytic micro-ozonation process, Additionally, GC-MS analysis state clearly that the 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenol, 4-(1,5-dihydroxy-2,6,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-enyl)but-3-en-2-one, ethanone, 1-(1,4-dimethyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl)-, 5-tert-butyl-6-3, 5-diene-2-one, 2-hydroxyhexanoic acid, 2-propenoic acid 1,1-dimethylethyl ester, butanoic acid, 2-methyl-, methyl ester and propanoic acid, 2, 2-dimethyl- were the dominant oxidation products (OPs) during the degradation of the AO 2246. The EPR results showed that the catalytic ozonation over Fe₃O₄@CDA led to produce more hydroxyl radicals, which were in favor of AO 2246 degradation. The toxicity evolution was also performed through a QSAR analysis calculated by the ECOSAR program which further demonstrated the different responses toward the AO 2246 and its OPs.

A sustainability anti-infective pharmaceutical wastewater treatment technology: multi-stage vertical variable diameter membrane bioreactor with DO online controlling

The proper choice of dissolved oxygen (DO) is important in aerobic treatment. In this paper, a multi-stage vertical variable diameter membrane bioreactor was developed to treat pharmaceutical wastewater containing 6-APA and ceftriaxone sodium. In the 180 days of operation, the performance of COD, BOD₅, 6-APA, ceftriaxone sodium removal, sludge index, and microbial enzyme activity under different DOs (from 0.5 to 6.0 mg/L) were investigated. The results showed that the optimal range of DO was 1.5-2.1 mg/L, and the highest removal rates of COD and BOD₅ were observed 87.3%±2.4% and 95.3%±1.8%, the corresponding effluent COD and BOD₅ were 189 mg/L and 24 mg/L, respectively. To reduce the energy consumption and ensure stability of DO in the reactor, a control strategy based on an improved differential evolution BP fuzzy neural network was built and found that the performance and cost of the controlled DO were improved effectively than that of uncontrolled DO.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles loading on cow dung based activated carbon as an efficient catalyst for catalytic microbubble ozonation of biologically pretreated coal gasification wastewater

Cow dung based activated carbon was successfully modified by Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as the novel catalyst (Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles@CDAC) to improve the microbubble ozonation treating biologically pretreated coal gasification wastewater (BPCGW). When the pH, ozone dosage, ozone bubble diameter and catalyst dosage of the ozonation were 7, 0.4 L/min, 5 μm and 3 g/L, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached 74% and the ratio of biochemical oxygen demand in five days/COD (BOD₅/COD) increased from 0.04 to 0.52, which were attributed to the electron transfer of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in Fe₃O₄ and enhanced hydroxyl radicals generation by the reaction of iron ions and ozone. Meanwhile, benzene derivatives, naphthalene and aromatic proteins were significantly removed while multiple chain hydrocarbons and their derivatives composed the main residual organic matters. The catalytic activity was slightly decreased even the catalyst has been reused for five times. Therefore, catalytic microbubble ozonation using Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles@CDAC represented excellent performance treating BPCGW and it is a promising process for wastewater advanced treatment.

AM fungi enhance the function of ecological floating bed in the treatment of saline industrial wastewater

Treatment of saline wastewater attracts more and more attention due to its negative effects on the environment in China. Although salt removal from high-saline wastewater is well done in many industry factories, few technologies are available to remove salt from low-saline wastewater (total dissolved solids, TDS < 10,000 mg/L). In this study, ecological floating bed (EFB) enhanced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) Glomus etunicatum was constructed to remove salt from simulated low-saline wastewater. Results showed that AM formation in Canna indica was not affected by salt stress, and a higher mycorrhizal colonization rate was even observed under salt stress relative to the control treatment. In saline wastewater containing TDS 5000 mg/L, EFB with AM inoculation (AM-EFB) removed 15.9% of TDS, 19.9% of COD, 14.2% of TN, 22.5% of TP, and 11.6-23.0% of salt ions (Na, K, Mg, and Ca) more than EFB without AM inoculation (NM-EFB) in September, and 13.0% of TDS, 15.8% of COD, 17.5% of TN, 16.6% of TP, and 8.60-22.2% of salt ions (Na, K, Mg, and Ca) more than NM-EFB in October respectively. AMF increased plant uptake to Na and the translocation of Na from root to shoot, especially at the initial stage of the experiment. Additionally, EFB function declined when environmental temperature declined independent of AM inoculation, but the presence of AM increased EFB function in the treatment of saline wastewater relative to NM-EFB. This study provides a new strategy for the treatment of low-saline wastewater and the EFB application in a low-temperature environment.

Effects of hydropower dam construction on sulfur distribution and sulfate-reducing prokaryotes assemblage

River damming is significant for hydropower production, but also alters the ecological conditions, and especially affects the microbial community. Sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRPs) make vital contributions to biogeochemical sulfur cycle, but the information on the effects of dam construction on the SRPs assemblage are unclear. Here, a comprehensive survey was conducted by collecting water and sediment samples along horizontal and vertical profiles from six sites at the Xiaowan Reservoir on the Lancang River, China. We used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and qPCR assay with dsrB gene to study the composition and activity of SRPs. The results indicated that river damming accumulated nutrients in the middle layer of the reservoir, and the impoundment provided an anaerobic and high nutrient available environment, which is beneficial for the survival of SRPs. The abundance and diversity of SRPs in water and sediments at the bottom of the reservoir were higher than those in the other sites. The network analyses revealed a synergistic effect between SRPs and other dominant bacteria in water column, which was more complex than in sediments. Moreover, a relatively higher sulfate reduction activity was found in the middle and lower layers of the water profile according to dsrB gene analysis.

Synergistic degradation on phenolic compounds of coal pyrolysis wastewater (CPW) by lignite activated coke-active sludge (LAC-AS) process: Insights into succession of microbial community under selective pressure

This study illustrated synergistic degradation of phenolic compounds by LAC-AS process via the insight into succession of microbial community under selective pressure. The results demonstrated that high phenols exhibited toxicity pressure to single AS process by eliminating non-tolerate bacteria, inducing vicious circulation by intermediates (catechol, nitrate, etc.) accumulation. However, LAC exerted another selective pressure and facilitated positive bio-community succession of moving biological bed reactor (MBBR). Firstly, it created rich microenvironments for diverse bacteria and promoted resilient adsorption for phenols with the assistance of biodegradation. Secondly, LAC enriched facultative bacteria, which developed multiple degradation paths on phenols and nitrogen based on multifunctional genes, counteracting the toxicity pressure. Specifically, phenols were degraded by the combination of anaerobic hydrolysis and oxidation, while conventional and shortcut nitrification-denitrification (SND) and nitrogen fixation all participated in nitrogen removal, achieving high removal of COD (93.49%), Tph (93.74%), TN (92.20%) and NH₄⁺-N (93.20%) under the highest phenols.

Potential of the integration of coagulation and ozonation as a pretreatment of reverse osmosis concentrate from coal gasification wastewater reclamation

Combination of coagulation and ozonation was used to treat brine derived from a three-stage reverse osmosis (RO) process during coal gasification wastewater reclamation. Effects of operating parameters on the removals of total organic carbon (TOC), color and UV absorbance at 254 nm (A₂₅₄) were investigated during coagulation and ozonation. All the removal efficiencies of TOC, A₂₅₄ and color of FeCl₃ coagulant are about twice those of AlCl₃ coagulant at the same molar dose since almost all the molecular weight fractions of RO concentrate (ROC) could be removed effectively by FeCl₃ coagulant while only the fractions of molecular weight > 3 k Da could be removed effectively by AlCl₃ coagulant. The TOC removal increases with the increasing of ozone dose and reaction temperature during ozonation of ROC after coagulation pretreatment. TOC and color of ROC after pretreated by coagulation could be further removed effectively during ozonation since ozonation can significant reduce the fluorescence response of all the fractions of effluent organic matter in ROC. It is unexpectedly found that the increase of A₂₅₄ is observed after ozonation, this is because the intensity of absorbance at 254 nm by the low molecular weight transformation products (<2 k Da) increases significantly with the reaction time after 30 min. The coagulation coupling with ozonation is efficient in the removals of both TOC and color of ROC.

Catalytic micro-ozonation by Fe3O4 nanoparticles @ cow-dung ash for advanced treatment of biologically pre-treated leachate

In this work, the biologically pre-treated leachate was subjected to catalytic micro-ozonation using cow-dung ash composites loaded with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (nano-Fe₃O₄@CDA) as the catalyst. The optimal conditions used were nano-Fe₃O₄@CDA dosage of 0.8 g/L, input ozone of 3.0 g/L, and reaction time of 120 min. This environment yielded the following results: The COD and color number (CN) removal reached 53% and 89%, respectively, and the BOD₅/COD increased from 0.05 to 0.32. The catalytic micro-ozonation partially degraded the refractory substances into intermediates with lower molecular weight. The percentage of phenolic compounds decreased sharply from 28.08% to 8.56%, largely due to the opening of the ring as well as to the formation of organic intermediates with a low molecular weight. Based on the results culled from the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), it is evident that the nano-Fe₃O₄@CDA catalyst can accelerate in order to generate OH. This was the main mechanism involved in its excellent ability to degrade refractory pollutants. These results demonstrated the potential use of nano-Fe₃O₄@CDA as a catalyst in the catalytic micro-ozonation process.

Effects of magnesium chloride on the anaerobic digestion and the implication on forward osmosis membrane bioreactor for sludge anaerobic digestion

This work elucidates the effects of model reversed salt MgCl₂ on methane production in an anaerobic digestion bioreactor treating waste sludge. Along with MgCl₂ concentration being raised stepwise, the methane production was only slightly less than in the control when MgCl₂ was 20 g/L and under, and then suddenly reduced to only about 10 mL/(L·d) at a MgCl₂ concentration of 30 g/L, and finally stopped when the MgCl₂ concentration reached 50 g/L. However, the total relative abundance of methanogens Methanomicrobia and Methanobacteria still accounted for 84.97% of the archaeal community when MgCl₂ was 50 g/L. The high correlation between live/dead cell ratio and methane production suggests that the live/dead cell ratio instead of the inhibition of methanogen might be the major cause for the halt of methane production at a magnesium chloride concentration of 50 g/L.

Treatment of stabilized landfill leachate by Fenton-like process using Fe3O4 particles decorated Zr-pillared bentonite

Fe₃O₄ particles decorated Zr pillared bentonite (Fe₃O₄/Zr-B) were successfully synthesized, which were used to treat stabilized landfill leachate by Fenton-like process. The organics removal and biodegradability were both significantly improved owing to good catalytic stability of the magnetically recoverable catalyst. With the catalyst dosage of 1.0 mg L^-1, initial pH of 2 and peroxide concentration of 0.1 mmol L^-1, the COD removal efficiency increased to 68% and BOD₅/COD of 0.27 was achieved. According to the results of the GC-MS, Fenton-like reaction with Fe₃O₄/Zr-B had an excellent removal performance for almost all the heterocyclic compounds. The 3D-EEM fluorescence spectra indicated that the fluorescence intensity was dramatically reduced and the UV humic-like and fulvic-like substances were removed effectively during the catalytic degradation. It seemed advisable to implement this process as a pre-treatment to facilitate the further biological treatment.

Membrane concentrate treatment by photosynthetic bacteria: Feasibility and tolerance mechanism analysis

Refractory membrane concentrate generated from the membrane bioreactor (MBR) process remains a big challenge. With high pollution loads, high salinity and low biodegradability, membrane concentrates are difficult to be treated by conventional biological treatments. In this work, photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) were employed to handle this problem. The results showed that PSB could simultaneously remove COD, NH₃-N, NO₃^--N, salinity and chroma from the membrane concentrate. The removal efficiency of COD, NH₃-N, NO₃^--N, salinity and chroma reached 24.0%, 78.0%, 81.6%, 57.0% and 60.0% respectively. Dark-aerobic condition was more beneficial for pollutants removal. The tolerance mechanism of PSB in treating membrane concentrate was then analyzed. The contents of protein and carotenoid in PSB increased by 38.7% and 20.7% due to the defense stress effects. The content of bacteriochlorin decreased by 42.9% while the content of coenzyme Q₁₀ was stable at 8.4-8.8%.
