A comprehensive review on the preparation of biochar from digestate sources and its application in environmental pollution remediation

The preparation of biochar from digestate is one of the effective ways to achieve the safe disposal and resource utilization of digestate. Nevertheless, up to now, a comprehensive review encompassing the factors influencing anaerobic digestate-derived biochar production and its applications is scarce in the literature. Therefore, to fill this gap, the present work first outlined the research hotspots of digestate in the last decade using bibliometric statistical analysis with the help of VOSviewer. Then, the characteristics of the different sources of digestate were summarized. Furthermore, the influencing factors of biochar preparation from digestate and the modification methods of digestate-derived biochar and associated mechanisms were analyzed. Notably, a comprehensive synthesis of anaerobic digestate-derived biochar applications is provided, encompassing enhanced anaerobic digestion, heavy metal remediation, aerobic composting, antibiotic/antibiotic resistance gene removal, and phosphorus recovery from digestate liquor. The economic and environmental impacts of digestate-derived biochar were also analyzed. Finally, the development prospect and challenges of using biochar from digestate to combat environmental pollution are foreseen. The aim is to not only address digestate management challenges at the source but also offer a novel path for the resourceful utilization of digestate.

A review of microbial responses to biochar addition in anaerobic digestion system: Community, cellular and genetic level findings

The biochar is a well-developed porous material with various excellent properties, that has been proven with excellent ability in anaerobic digestion (AD) efficiency promotion. Current research is usually focused on the macro effects of biochar on AD, while the systematic review about the mechanisms of biochar on microbial behavior are still lacking. This review summarizes the effects and potential mechanisms of biochar on microorganisms in AD systems, and found that biochar addition can provide habitats for microbial colonization, alleviate toxins stress, supply essential nutrients, and accelerate interspecies electron transferring. Moreover, it also improves microbial community diversity, facilitates EPS secretion, enhances functional enzyme activity, promotes functional genes expression, and inhibits the antibiotic resistance genes transformation. Future research directions including biochar targeted design, in-depth microbial mechanisms revelation, and modified model development were suggested, which could promote the widely practical application of of biochar-amended AD technology.

Boosting thermophilic anaerobic digestion with conductive materials: Current outlook and future prospects

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) can provide superior process kinetics, higher methane yields, and more pathogen destruction than mesophilic anaerobic digestion (MAD). However, the broader application of TAD is still very limited, mainly due to process instabilities such as the accumulation of volatile fatty acids and ammonia inhibition in the digesters. An emerging technique to overcome the process disturbances in TAD and enhance the methane production rate is to add conductive materials (CMs) to the digester. Recent studies have revealed that CMs can promote direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) among the microbial community, increasing the TAD performance. CMs exhibited a high potential for alleviating the accumulation of volatile fatty acids and inhibition caused by high ammonia levels. However, the types, properties, sources, and dosage of CMs can influence the process outcomes significantly, along with other process parameters such as the organic loading rates and the type of feedstocks. Therefore, it is imperative to critically review the recent research to understand the impacts of using different CMs in TAD. This review paper discusses the types and properties of CMs applied in TAD and the mechanisms of how they influence methanogenesis, digester start-up time, process disturbances, microbial community, and biogas desulfurization. The engineering challenges for industrial-scale applications and environmental risks were also discussed. Finally, critical research gaps have been identified to provide a framework for future research.

Evaluating effects of biochar on anaerobic digestion of dewatered waste activated sludge: Digester performance, microbial co-metabolism and underlying mechanism

Biochar has been proven to be capable of improving the performance of anaerobic digestion (AD). However, the effect of biochar on microbial communities remains ambiguous. In this study, the influence of pH was excluded in a semi-continuous anaerobic digestor for the treatment of dewatered waste activated sludge (WAS) to determine the effect of biochar on microbes. Compared with the control group, the average methane production increased by 24.5% and 23.2% at the organic loading rates (OLRs) of 1.56 and 3.00 gTS/L/d, respectively, in the presence of biochar. This study innovatively found biochar accelerated the enrichment of Methanofastidiosaceae, which competed with Methanobacteriaceae for H2, and its abundance increased from 0.99% at the OLR of 1.56 g TS/L/d to 16.57% and 38.11% at the OLR of 3.00 and 5.60 gTS/L/d, respectively. The efficient metabolic network of f__norank_o__Aminicenantales, syntrophic bacteria, Methanofastidiosaceae and Methanosaetaceae promoted the conversion of WAS to CH4 in the biochar group. In addition, metagenome analysis revealed that biochar optimized the metabolites related to energy conservation and electron transfer, particularly for hydrogenase (frhABG, mbhLHK and hndA-D), confirming that biochar changed the way H2 was involved in methanogenesis. These findings provide novel insights into the direct effect of biochar on microbial evolution and facilitate the reduction of WAS to achieve higher economic benefits in biogas production.

Biochar application for greenhouse gas mitigation, contaminants immobilization and soil fertility enhancement: A state-of-the-art review

Rising global temperature, pollution load, and energy crises are serious problems, recently facing the world. Scientists around the world are ambitious to find eco-friendly and cost-effective routes for resolving these problems. Biochar has emerged as an agent for environmental remediation and has proven to be the effective sorbent to inorganic and organic pollutants in water and soil. Endowed with unique attributes such as porous structure, larger specific surface area (SSA), abundant surface functional groups, better cation exchange capacity (CEC), strong adsorption capacity, high environmental stability, embedded minerals, and micronutrients, biochar is presented as a promising material for environmental management, reduction in greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions, soil management, and soil fertility enhancement. Therefore, the current review covers the influence of key factors (pyrolysis temperature, retention time, gas flow rate, and reactor design) on the production yield and property of biochar. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the diverse application of biochar such as waste management, construction material, adsorptive removal of petroleum and oil from aqueous media, immobilization of contaminants, carbon sequestration, and their role in climate change mitigation, soil conditioner, along with opportunities and challenges. Finally, this review discusses the evaluation of biochar standardization by different international agencies and their economic perspective.

Effect of Fe0 particle size on buffering characteristics and biohydrogen production in high-load photo fermentation system of corn stover

The aim of this work was to study the effects of Fe0 particle sizes (700 nm, 100 nm and 50 nm) addition on biohydrogen production, liquid culture characteristics and photosynthetic bacterial respond in the high-load photo fermentation system of corn stover within the concentration range of 200-1500 mg/L. Results showed that Fe0 with particle size of 700 nm had a better promotion effect on hydrogen production than 100 nm and 50 nm. The highest hydrogen yield of 74.32 ± 3.48 mL/g TS and hydrogen production rate of 3.31 ± 0.11 mL/g·h TS corn stover were obtained at 1000 and 1500 mg/L Fe0-700 nm, which were significantly increased by 92.88 % and 133.88 % compared with the control group. Further analysis indicated that Fe0 addition effectively alleviated pH drop, enhanced nitrogenase activity, promoted cell growth, and accelerated the consumption of acetic acid and butyric acid.

Production of biochar from crop residues and its application for anaerobic digestion

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a viable and cost-effective method for converting organic waste into usable renewable energy. The efficiency of organic waste digestion, nonetheless, is limited due to inhibition and instability. Accordingly, biochar is an effective method for improving the efficiency of AD by adsorbing inhibitors, promoting biogas generation and methane concentration, maintaining process stability, colonizing microorganisms selectively, and mitigating the inhibition of volatile fatty acids and ammonia. This paper reviews the features of crop waste-derived biochar and its application in AD systems. Four critical roles of biochar in AD systems were identified: maintaining pH stability, promoting hydrolysis, enhancing the direct interspecies electron transfer pathway, and supporting microbial development. This work also highlights that the interaction between biochar dose, amount of organic component in the substrate, and inoculum-to-substrate ratio should be the focus of future research before deploying commercial applications.

Screening of early warning indicators for full-scale dry anaerobic digestion of household kitchen waste

Process monitoring is an essential measure to achieve efficient and stable performance in anaerobic digestion, thus requiring identification of effective early warning indicators. However, the application of early warning indicators to full-scale dry anaerobic engineering biogas plant still remains elusive. This study evaluated the effectiveness of common early warning indicators (including CH₄, CO₂, H₂S, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), alkalinity (ALK), total ammonia concentration (TAN) and free ammonia concentration (FAN)) in monitoring the instability of anaerobic digestion process at a practical engineering plant. The results showed that the individual indicators could not provide a sufficient early warning time before the digester fell into failure collapse. In comparison, the coupling indicators (the ratio of CH₄/CO₂, CH₄/pH, and CH₄/H₂S) had sensitive response to perturbation, which could regard as a potential early warning indicator, with the early warning time of 6, 7 and 10 days, respectively. Moreover, the VFA/ALK could be used as auxiliary indicators due to the limitation of complex detection methods. In addition, the result also indicated that the application of some warning indicators needs to be further verified, when transferring the result of laboratory scale to the practice application scenarios. This study provides insight into the stable operation of dry anaerobic engineering.

Synergetic effects of biochar addition on mesophilic and high total solids anaerobic digestion of chicken manure

High solids anaerobic digestion (AD) of chicken manure (CM) is often challenging due to ammonia-N inhibition and accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). This study evaluated the effect of adding biochars from different feedstock to ameliorate semi-dry AD of fresh CM during batch fermentation. Experiments were performed in 300 mL at two total solid (TS) levels (12% and 15%) under mesophilic (36 ±1ᵒC) conditions for 55 d, using activated sludge as inoculum. Treatments included: fresh CM (at 12% or 15% TS) mixed separately with rice husks char (RB), wood char (WB) and bamboo char (BB) at biochar dosages of 2.5%, 5% and 10% of TS in the CM, inoculum only and inoculum plus CM without addition of char as the control. Results indicated that addition of biochar reduced the lag phases to 4-5.4 d and AD performances were significantly improved with total volatile solids removal of 53-67% and 62-71%, and cumulative methane of 277-380 mL/gVS (CH₄ content ≈ 51-63%) and 297-438 mL/gVS (CH₄ content ≈ 49-67%) at 12% and 15% TS, respectively. Biochar buffered over acidification and stabilized pH in the range of 6.5-7.8 but mild ammonia inhibition still occurred in all biochar treatments due to the high residual total ammonia-N (4.3 g-5.6 g/L). For all the investigated parameters, WB amended digesters exhibited the best results owing to its high specific surface area, porosity, cationic exchange capacity, and elemental composition which were superior to those of RB and BB. At 10% dosage of all tested biochars, the AD process was more stable and methane content neared optimal of >65% CH₄. Therefore, addition of biochar from lignocellulosic materials at a given threshold dosage could promote semi-dry and dry biogas production from chicken manure and thus add value to this waste which in most cases is improperly managed.

Current development and perspectives of anaerobic bioconversion of crop stalks to Biogas: A review

As one of the most abundant biomass resources, crop stalks are great potential feedstock available for anaerobic digestion (AD) to produce biogas. However, the specific physical properties and complex chemical structures of crop stalks form strong barriers to efficient AD bioconversion. To overcome these problems, many efforts have been made over the past few years. This paper reviewed recent research in the evolving field of anaerobic bioconversion of crop stalks and was focused on three critical aspects affecting AD performance: various pretreatment methods and their effects on the improvement of crop stalk biodegradability, determination of specific AD operation parameters for crop stalks, and development of AD technologies. Finally, recommendations on the future development of crop stalk AD were proposed.

Biochar derived from fruit by-products using pyrolysis process for the elimination of Pb(II) ion: An updated review

Water pollution is one of the most concerning global environmental problems in this century with the severity and complexity of the issue increases every day. One of the major contributors to water pollution is the discharge of harmful heavy metal wastes into the rivers and water bodies. Without proper treatment, the release of these harmful inorganic waste would endanger the environment by contaminating the food chains of living organisms, hence, leading to potential health risks to humans. The adsorption method has become one of the cost-effective alternative treatments to eliminate heavy metal ions. Since the type of adsorbent material is the most vital factor that determines the effectiveness of the adsorption, continuous efforts have been made in search of cheap adsorbents derived from a variety of waste materials. Fruit waste can be transformed into valuable products, such as biochar, as they are composed of many functional groups, including carboxylic groups and lignin, which is effective in metal binding. The main objective of this study was to review the potential of various types of fruit wastes as an alternative adsorbent for Pb(II) removal. Following a brief overview of the properties and effects of Pb(II), this study discussed the equilibrium isotherms and adsorption kinetic by various adsorption models. The possible adsorption mechanisms and regeneration study for Pb(II) removal were also elaborated in detail to provide a clear understanding of biochar produced using the pyrolysis technique. The future prospects of fruit waste as an adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) was also highlighted.

A review of biochar in anaerobic digestion to improve biogas production: Performances, mechanisms and economic assessments

Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology still faces some challenges including low methane productivity, instable operation efficiency and undesired refractory substances degradation. Biochar has recently been recognized as a promising alternative addition in AD process to enhance methane production. Based on VOSviewer analysis, this review presents a comprehensive summarizing of the applications, performances, and economies of biochar strategies in AD system. Firstly, typical production processes of biochar and its main characteristics including adsorption and immobilization ability, buffering ability and electron transfer ability were evaluated. Then, the applications of biochar in AD and its improving effects on biogas production/purification were summarized. Accordingly, the corresponding mechanisms of biochar addition in AD for digestion efficiency improvement were elucidated. Finally, the economic and environmental feasibilities of application biochar in AD, as well as prospective future studies were summarized. Through an overview of biochar in AD system, this paper aims to promote its widely practical applications.

Production and beneficial impact of biochar for environmental application: A comprehensive review

This review focuses on a holistic view of biochar, production from feedstock's, engineering production strategies, its applications and future prospects. This article reveals a systematic emphasis on the continuation and development of biochar and its production methods such as Physical engineering, chemical and bio-engineering techniques. In addition, biochar alternatives such as nutrient formations and surface area made it a promising cheap source of carbon-based products such as anaerobic digestion, gasification, and pyrolysis, commercially available wastewater treatment, carbons, energy storage, microbial fuel cell electrodes, and super-capacitors repair have been reviewed. This paper also covers the knowledge blanks of strategies and ideas for the future in the field of engineering biochar production techniques and application as well as expand the technology used in the circular bio-economy.

A review on facilitating bio-wastes degradation and energy recovery efficiencies in anaerobic digestion systems with biochar amendment

In this review, progress in the potential mechanisms of biochar amendment for AD performance promotion was summarized. As adsorbents, biochar was beneficial for alleviating microbial toxicity, accelerating refractory substances degradation, and upgrading biogas quality. The buffering capacity of biochar balanced pH decreasing caused by volatile fatty acids accumulation. Moreover, biochar regulated microbial metabolism by boosting activities, mediating electron transfer between syntrophic partners, and enriching functional microbes. Recent studies also suggested biochar as potential useful additives for membrane fouling alleviation in anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR). By analyzing the reported performances based on different operation models or substrate types, debatable issues and associated research gaps of understanding the real role of biochar in AD were critically discussed. Accordingly, Future perspectives of developing biochar-amended AD technology for real-world applications were elucidated. Lastly, with biochar-amended AD as a core process, a novel integrated scheme was proposed towards high-efficient energy-resource recovery from various bio-wastes.
