Integrating acidogenic fermentation and microalgae cultivation of bacterial-algal coupling system for mariculture wastewater treatment

A fast microbial nitrogen-assimilation technology enhances nitrogen migration and single-cell-protein production in high-ammonia piggery wastewater

Conventional methods, such as freshwater dilution and ammonia stripping, have been widely employed for microalgae-based piggery wastewater (PW) treatment, but they cause high freshwater consumption and intensive ammonia loss, respectively. This present work developed a novel fast microbial nitrogen-assimilation technology by integrating nitrogen starvation, zeolite-based adsorption, pH control, and co-culture of microalgae-yeast for the PW treatment. Among them, the nitrogen starvation accelerated the nitrogen removal and shortened the treatment period, but it could not improve the tolerance level of microalgal cells to ammonia toxicity based on oxidative stress. Therefore, zeolite was added to reduce the initial total ammonia-nitrogen concentration to around 300 mg/L by ammonia adsorption. Slowly releasing ammonia at the later phase maintained the total ammonia-nitrogen concentration in the PW. However, the pH increase could cause lots of ammonia loss air and pollution and inhibit the desorption of ammonia from zeolite and the growth and metabolism of microalgae during the microalgae cultivation. Thus, the highest biomass yield (3.25 g/L) and nitrogen recovery ratio (40.31%) were achieved when the pH of PW was controlled at 6.0. After combining the co-cultivation of microalgae-yeast, the carbon-nitrogen co-assimilation and the alleviation of pH fluctuation further enhanced the nutrient removal and nitrogen migration to high-protein biomass. Consequently, the fast microbial nitrogen-assimilation technology can help update the industrial system for high-ammonia wastewater treatment by improving the treatment and nitrogen recovery rates.

Potential applications of microalgae-bacteria consortia in wastewater treatment and biorefinery

The use of microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) for wastewater treatment has garnered attention as their interactions impart greater environmental adaptability and stability compared with that obtained by only microalgae or bacteria use, thereby improving the efficiency of pollutant removal and bio-product productivity. Additionally, the value-added bio-products produced via biorefineries can improve economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability. Therefore, this review focuses on the interaction between microalgae and bacteria that leads to nutrient exchange, gene transfer and signal transduction to comprehensively understand the interaction mechanisms underlying their strong adaptability. In addition, it includes recent research in which MBC has been efficiently used to treat various wastewater. Moreover, the review summarizes the use of MBC-produced biomass in a biorefining context to produce biofuel, biomaterial, high-value bio-products and bio-fertilizer. Overall, more effort is needed to identify the symbiotic mechanism in MBC to provide a foundation for circular bio-economy and environmentally friendly development programmes.

Treatment of carpet and textile industry effluents using Diplosphaera mucosa VSPA: A multiple input optimisation study using artificial neural network-genetic algorithms

The wastewater treatment efficiency of Diplosphaera mucosa VSPA was enhanced by optimising five input parameters and increasing the biomass yield. pH, temperature, light intensity, wastewater percentage (pollutant concentration), and N/P ratio were optimised, and their effects were studied. Two competitive techniques, response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN), were applied for constructing predictive models using experimental data generated according to central composite design. Both MATLAB and Python were used for constructing ANN models. ANN models predicted the experimental data with high accuracy and less error than RSM models. Generated models were hybridised with a genetic algorithm (GA) to determine the optimised values of input parameters leading to high biomass productivity. ANN-GA hybridisation approach performed in Python presented optimisation results with less error (0.45%), which were 7.8 pH, 28.8 °C temperature, 105.20 μmol m-2 s-1 light intensity, 93.10 wastewater % (COD) and 23.5 N/P ratio.

Microbial co-cultures for biochemicals production from lignocellulosic biomass: A review

Global reliance on fossil oil should shift to cleaner alternatives to get a decarbonized society. One option to achieve this ambitious goal is the use of biochemicals produced from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB). The inherent low biodegradability of LCB and the inhibitory compounds that might be released during pretreatment are two main challenges for LCB valorization. At microbiological level, constraints are mostly linked to the need for axenic cultures and the preference for certain carbon sources (i.e., glucose). To cope with these issues, this review focuses on efficient LCB conversion via the sugar platform as well as an innovative carboxylate platform taking advantage of the co-cultivation of microorganisms. This review discusses novel trends in the use of microbial communities and co-cultures aiming at different bioproducts co-generation in single reactors as well as in sequential bioprocess combination. The outlook and further perspectives of these alternatives have been outlined for future successful development.

Potential contribution of chlorella vulgaris to carbon-nitrogen turnover in freshwater ecosystems after a great sandstorm event

Urban lakes represent important land-water and nature-human dual interfaces that promote the cycling of elements from terrestrials to sediments and consequently modulating the stabilization of regional climate. However, whether disturbances caused by extreme weather events can have substantial effects on carbon-nitrogen (C-N) cycling in these ecosystems are vague. To explore the impact of phytoplankton on the ecological retention time of C-N, two kinds of freshwater (natural and landscape) were collected and conducted a microcosm experiment using a freshwater algal species Chlorella vulgaris. Sandstorm events increased dissolved inorganic carbon in freshwater (65.55 ± 3.09 and 39.46 ± 2.51 mg·L-1 for samples from Jinyang and Nankai, respectively) and significantly affected the relevant pathways of photosynthesis in Chlorella vulgaris, including enhancing chlorophyll fluorescence (The effective quantum yield of PSII at the fifth day of incubation was 0.34 and 0.35 for Nankai and Jinyang, respectively), promoting the synthesis of sugars and inhibiting the synthesis of glycine and serine related proteins. Besides, carbon from plant biomass accumulation and cellular metabolism (fulvic acid-like, polyaromatic-type humic acid and polycarboxylate-type humic acid, etc.) was enriched into residues and become a kind of energy source for the decomposer (TC mass increased by 1.63-2.13 times after 21 days of incubation). This means that the accumulation and consumption of carbon and nitrogen in the residue can be used to track the processes controlling the long-term C-N cycle. Our findings shed light on the plant residues were key factors contributing to the formation of water carbon pool, breaks the traditional theory that dissolved carbonates cannot produce carbon sinks.

Effect of mariculture wastewater concentrations on high-value production and pollutants removal with bacterial-algal coupling reactor (BACR)

To achieve the goal of cost-effective mariculture wastewater treatment, a novel Bacteria-Algae Coupling Reactor (BACR) integrating acidogenic fermentation with microalgae cultivation was applied for the mariculture wastewater treatment. Currently, there is limited research on the impact of different concentrations of mariculture wastewater on the pollutant removal and the high-value products recovery. In this study, different concentrations (4, 6, 8, and 10 g/L) of mariculture wastewater were treated with BACR. The results showed thatoptimalMW concentrations of 8 g/L improved the growth viability and biochemical components synthetic of Chlorella vulgaris, which increased the potential for high-value products recovery. The BACR exhibited the excellent removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia-nitrogen and total phosphorus with 82.30%, 81.12% and 96.40%, respectively. This study offers an ecological and economic approach to improve the MW treatment through the utilization of a novel bacterial-algal coupling system.

Elucidating microalgae-mediated metabolism for sulfadiazine removal mechanism and transformation pathways

Sulfadiazine (SDZ) as a typical sulfonamide antibiotic is commonly detected in wastewater, and its removal mechanism and transformation pathways in microalgae-mediated system remain unclear. In this study, the SDZ removal through hydrolysis, photodegradation, and biodegradation by Chlorella pyrenoidosa was investigated. Higher superoxide dismutase activity and biochemical components accumulation were obtained under SDZ stress. The SDZ removal efficiencies at different initial concentrations were 65.9-67.6%, and the removal rate followed pseudo first-order kinetic model. Batch tests and HPLC-MS/MS analyses suggested that biodegradation and photodegradation through the reactions of amine group oxidation, ring opening, hydroxylation, and the cleavage of S-N, C-N, C-S bond were dominant removal mechanisms and pathways. Characteristics of transformation products were evaluated to analyze their environmental impacts. High-value products of lipid, carbohydrate, and protein in microalgae biomass presented economic potential of microalgae-mediated metabolism for SDZ removal. The findings of this study broadened the knowledge for the microalgae self-protection from SDZ stress and provided a deep insight into SDZ removal mechanism and transformation pathways.

Supplementation of exogenous phytohormones for enhancing the removal of sulfamethoxazole and the simultaneous accumulation of lipid by Chlorella vulgaris

In this study, the phytohormone gibberellins (GAs) were used to enhance sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal and lipid accumulation in the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. At the concentration of 50 mg/L GAs, the SMX removal achieved by C. vulgaris was 91.8 % while the lipid productivity of microalga was at 11.05 mg/L d^-1, which were much higher than that without GAs (3.5 % for SMX removal and 0.52 mg/L d^-1 for lipid productivity). Supplementation of GAs enhanced the expression of antioxidase-related genes in C. vulgaris as a direct response towards the toxicity of SMX. In addition, GAs increased lipid production of C. vulgaris by up-regulating the expression of genes related to carbon cycle of microalgal cells. In summary, exogenous GAs promoted the stress tolerance and lipid accumulation of microalgae at the same time, which is conducive to improving the economic benefits of microalgae-based antibiotics removal as well as biofuel production potential.

Mixotrophic cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa under sulfadiazine stress: High-value product recovery and toxicity tolerance evaluation

Sulfadiazine (SDZ) as a common sulfonamide antibiotic is frequently detected in wastewater, but there is little information on the high-value product recovery and toxicity tolerance evaluation of mixotrophic microalgae under SDZ stress. In this study, effects of SDZ on growth, photosynthesis, cellular damage, antioxidant capacity and intracellular biochemical components of Chlorella pyrenoidosa were investigated. Results showed that the growth of C. pyrenoidosa was inhibited by about 20% under high SDZ stress, but there was little impact on photosynthesis. Cellular damage and antioxidant capacity were evaluated using malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity to further explain the toxicity tolerance of mixotrophic microalgae. The SDZ stress not only increased lipid and carbohydrate content, respectively attaining to the maximum of 390.0 and 65.4 mg/L, but also improved the biodiesel quality of C. pyrenoidosa. The findings show the potential of mixotrophic microalgae for biodiesel production and wastewater treatment.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment - Microalgae-bacteria consortia, multi-omics approaches and algal stress response

Sustainable environmental management is one of the important aspects of sustainable development goals. Increasing amounts of wastewaters (WW) from exponential economic growth is a major challenge, and conventional treatment methods entail a huge carbon footprint in terms of energy use and GHG emissions. Microalgae-based WW treatment is a potential candidate for sustainable WW treatment. The nutrients which are otherwise unutilized in the conventional processes are recovered in the beneficial microalgal biomass. This review presents comprehensive information regarding the potential of microalgae as sustainable bioremediation agents. Microalgae-bacterial consortia play a critical role in synergistic nutrient removal, supported by the complex nutritional and metabolite exchange between microalgae and the associated bacteria. Design of effective microalgae-bacteria consortia either by screening or by recent technologies such as synthetic biology approaches are highly required for efficient WW treatment. Furthermore, this review discusses the crucial research gap in microalgal WW treatment - the application of a multi-omics platform for understanding microalgal response towards WW conditions and the design of effective microalgal or microalgae-bacteria consortia based on genetic information. While metagenomics helps in the identification and monitoring of the microbial community throughout the treatment process, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics aid in studying the algal cellular response towards the nutrients and pollutants in WW. It has been established that the integration of microalgal processes into conventional WW treatment systems is feasible. In this direction, future research directions for microalgal WW treatment emphasize the need for identifying the niche in WW treatment, while highlighting the pilot sale plants in existence. Microalgae-based WW treatment could be a potential phase in the waste hierarchy of circular economy and sustainability, considering WWs are a rich secondary source of finite resources such as nitrogen and phosphorus.

Heavy metal remediation from wastewater using microalgae: Recent advances and future trends

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment has previously been carried out in huge waste stabilization ponds. Microalgae, which can absorb carbon dioxide while reusing nutrients from sewage, has recently emerged as a new trend in the wastewater treatment business. Microalgae farming is thought to be a potential match for the modern world's energy strategy, which emphasizes low-cost and environmentally benign alternatives. Microalgae are being used to treat wastewater and make useful products. Microalgae, for example, is a promising renewable resource for producing biomass from wastewater nutrients because of its quick growth rate, short life span, and high carbon dioxide utilization efficacy. Microalgae-based bioremediation has grown in importance in the treatment of numerous types of wastewater in recent years. This solar-powered wastewater treatment technology has huge potential. However, there are still issues to be resolved in terms of land requirements, as well as the process's ecological feasibility and long-term viability, before these systems can be widely adopted. Due to cost and the need for a faultless downstream process, it is difficult to deploy this technology on a large scale. Other recent breakthroughs in wastewater microalgae farming have been investigated, such as how varied pressures affect microalgae growth and quality, as well as the number of high-value components produced. In this review, the future of this biotechnology has also been examined.

Sulfite-based pretreatment promotes volatile fatty acids production from microalgae: Performance, mechanism, and implication

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of microalgae is generally constrained by low organics solubilization and poor substrate-availability. In this study, sulfite-based pretreatment was developed to overcome such situation. Experimental results showed that the maximum concentration of VFAs (467.5 mg COD/g VSS) and corresponding acetate proportion (54.5%) was obtained at 200 mg sulfite-S/L with fermentation time of day 8, which was respectively 2.1- and 1.9-fold of control. It was found that after sulfite pretreatment, more and relatively easy biodegradable organics were released into liquid phase, providing available substrate for acid-producing bacteria. The rigid cell wall of microalgae was destroyed, evidenced by the decreased particle size and increased surface area, which made the microalgae more accessible for subsequent hydrolysis and acidification. Meanwhile, the sulfite-induced sulfate-reducing bacteria facilitated the acetate generation pathway. The accelerated activities of β-glucanase, β-glucosidase, and acetate kinase involved in anaerobic fermentation further validated the above results.

Two-stage hybrid microalgal electroactive wetland-coupled anaerobic digestion for swine wastewater treatment in South China: Full-scale verification

Constructed wetlands have been widely used for organic wastewater treatment owing to low operating costs and simple maintenance. However, there are some disadvantages such as unstable efficiency in winter. In this study, a microalgal electroactive biofilm-constructed wetland was coupled with anaerobic digestion for full-scale treatment of swine wastewater. In a 12-month outdoor trial, the overall removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, ammonium, nitrate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and nitrite reached 98.26%/95.14%, 97.96%/92.07%, 85.45%/66.04%, 95.07%/91.48%, 91.44%/91.52%, and 85.45%/84.67% in summer/winter, respectively. Hydrolytic bacteria were dominant in the anaerobic digestion part, and Cyanobium, Shewanella, and Azoarcus were enriched in the microalgal electroactive biofilm. The operating cost of the entire system was approximately 0.118 $/m³ of wastewater. These results confirm that the microalgal electroactive biofilm significantly enhances the efficiency and stability of constructed wetlands. In conclusion, the anaerobic digestion-microalgal electroactive biofilm-constructed wetland is technically and economically feasible for the treatment of swine wastewater.

Pollution Control of Industrial Mariculture Wastewater: A Mini-Review

With the rapid development of intensive mariculture, lots of mariculture wastewaters containing residual feed and excrements are discharged into marinelands, leading to coastal pollution. Recently, the environmental problems caused by the discharge of mariculture wastewater have been paid much attention, as have other breeding industries in China. In fact, organic solid waste accounts for most of the pollutants and can be reduced by precipitation or filtration technologies, after which the supernatant can be easily treated by ecological methods. Some national guidelines and relevant local standards have been issued to strictly control the mariculture wastewater, but there are still few effective technologies for mariculture wastewater treatment due to its high salinity and extremely low pollutant concentration. This paper aims to propose feasible pollution control methods of mariculture wastewater according to the wastewater characteristics from different mariculture modes. For raw ammonia-based wastewater, it should be sequentially treated by precipitation, nitrification and denitrification and ecological methods, which would target solid waste, organic carbon/nitrogen and phosphorus removal, respectively. For the nitrate-based wastewater, this just needs denitrification filters and ecological methods for nitrate and phosphorus removal. After an overview of pollution control strategies for different types and scales of industrial mariculture wastewater treatment, some challenges are also mentioned.

Evaluation of the effects of input variables on the growth of two microalgae classes during wastewater treatment

Wastewater treatment carried out by microalgae is usually affected by the type of algal strain and the combination of cultivation parameters provided during the process. Every microalga strain has a different tolerance level towards cultivation parameters, including temperature, pH, light intensity, CO2 content, initial inoculum level, pretreatment method, reactor type and nutrient concentration in wastewater. Therefore, it is vital to supply the right combination of cultivation parameters to increase the wastewater treatment efficiency and biomass productivity of different microalgae classes. In the current investigation, the decision tree was used to analyse the dataset of class Trebouxiophyceae and Chlorophyceae. Various combinations of cultivation parameters were determined to enhance their performance in wastewater treatment. Nine combinations of cultivation parameters leading to high biomass production and eleven combinations each for high nitrogen removal efficiency and high phosphorus removal efficiency for class Trebouxiophyceae were detected by decision tree models. Similarly, eleven combinations for high biomass production, nine for high nitrogen removal efficiency, and eight for high phosphorus removal efficiency were detected for class Chlorophyceae. The results obtained through decision tree analysis can provide the optimum conditions of cultivation parameters, saving time in designing new experiments for treating wastewater at a large scale.

Industrial CO2 Capture by Algae: A Review and Recent Advances

The problem of global warming and the emission of greenhouse gases is already directly affecting the world’s energy. In the future, the impact of CO2 emissions on the world economy will constantly grow. In this paper, we review the available literature sources on the benefits of using algae cultivation for CO2 capture to decrease CO2 emission. CO2 emission accounts for about 77% of all greenhouse gases, and the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions is 56% of all CO2 imports. As a result of the study of various types of algae, it was concluded that Chlorella sp. is the best at capturing CO2. Various methods of cultivating microalgae were also considered and it was found that vertical tubular bioreactors are emerging. Moreover, for energy purposes, thermochemical methods for processing algae that absorb CO2 from flue gases were considered. Of all five types of thermochemical processes for producing synthesis gas, the most preferred method is the method of supercritical gasification of algae. In addition, attention is paid to the drying and flocculation of biofuels. Several different experiments were also reviewed on the use of flue gases through the cultivation of algae biomass. Based on this literature review, it can be concluded that microalgae are a third generation biofuel. With the absorption of greenhouse gases, the growth of microalgae cultures is accelerated. When a large mass of microalgae appears, it can be used for energy purposes. In the results, we present a plan for further studies of microalgae cultivation, a thermodynamic analysis of gasification and pyrolysis, and a comparison of the results with other biofuels and other algae cultures.

Paradigm shift in algal biomass refinery and its challenges

Microalgae have been studied and tested for over 70 years. However, biodiesel, the prime target of the algal industry, has suffered from low competitiveness and current steps toward banning the internal combustion engine all over the world. Meanwhile, interest in reducing CO₂ emissions has grown as the world has witnessed disasters caused by global warming. In this situation, in order to maximize the benefits of the microalgal industry and surmount current limitations, new breakthroughs are being sought. First, drop-in fuel, mandatory for the aviation and maritime industries, has been discussed as a new product. Second, methods to secure stable and feasible outdoor cultivation focusing on CO₂ sequestration were investigated. Lastly, the need for an integrated refinery process to simultaneously produce multiple products has been discussed. While the merits of microalgae industry remain valid, further investigations into these new frontiers would put algal industry at the core of future bio-based economy.

Regulation of carbon source metabolism in mixotrophic microalgae cultivation in response to light intensity variation

Microalgae are one of the promising sources for renewable energy production, and the light intensity variation can affect the biofuel generation and carbon assimilation of mixotrophic microalgae. To reveal the response of carbon assimilation to light intensity, the effect of light intensity on the carbon source metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris under mixotrophic cultivation was investigated in this study. Moreover, the optimal carbon source composition for mixotrophic microalgae cultivation was evaluated using bicarbonate (HCO₃^-) and carbonate (CO₃^2-) as inorganic carbon sources, and glucose and acetate as organic carbon sources. The optimal light intensity for Chlorella vulgaris growth was at the range of 8000-12000 lux. For the accumulation of biochemical components, low light intensity was beneficial to protein accumulation, and high light intensity was advantageous for carbohydrate and lipid accumulation. With HCO₃^- and glucose, the maximum lipid content reached 37.0% at a light intensity of 12000 lux. The citrate synthase activity was negatively correlated with light intensity, showing an opposite trend to biomass production. High light intensity had a positive impact on Rubisco expression, which promoted the microalgae growth and carbon fixing. The energy produced by heterotrophic metabolic activities increased at low light intensity, and the enhancement of biomass production with high light intensity was mainly caused by the improved photoreaction efficiency during the mixotrophic cultivation.

Advances in microalgal research for valorization of industrial wastewater

This review article focuses on recent updates on remediation of industrial wastewater (IWW) through microalgae cultivation. These include how adding additional supplements of nutrient to some specific IWWs lacking adequate nutrients improving the microalgae growth and remediation simultaneously. Various pretreatments strategy recently employed for IWWs treatment other than dealing with microalgae was discussed. Various nutrient-rich IWW could be utilized directly with additional dilution, supplement of nutrients and without any pretreatment. Recent advances in various approaches and new tools used for cultivation of microalgae on IWW such as two-step cultivation, pre-acclimatization, novel microalgal-bioelectrical systems, integrated catalytic intense pulse-light process, sequencing batch reactor, use of old stabilized algal-bacterial consortium, immobilized microalgae cells, microalgal bacterial membrane photobioreactor, low-intensity magnetic field, BIO_ALGAE simulation tool, etc. are discussed. In addition, biorefinery of microalgal biomass grown on IWW and its end-use applications are reviewed.

Effect of Different Influent Conditions on Biomass Production and Nutrient Removal by Aeration Microalgae Membrane Bioreactor (ICFB-MMBR) System for Mariculture Wastewater Treatment

The nutrient removal and biomass production of the internal circulating fluidized bed microalgae membrane bioreactor (ICFB-MMBR) was studied under different cultivation modes, influent TOC, influent pH, and influent N/P. Platymonas helgolandica tsingtaoensis was used as the biological source. The growth of P. helgolandica tsingtaoensis and the removal efficiency of pollutants in the mixotrophy culture mode were improved compared with other culture modes. With the increased influent TOC, the average growth rate of P. helgolandica tsingtaoensis increased, and ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus removal rate were improved. The P. helgolandica tsingtaoensis growth rate and nutrient removal efficiencies at the influent pH of 8 were the best among the different influent pH values. As the influent N/P ratio increased from 5 to 20, the P. helgolandica tsingtaoensis growth rate and pollutant removal rate increased gradually. When the influent N/P ratio was higher than 20, the P. helgolandica tsingtaoensis growth rate and pollutant removal rate tended to be stable and did not significantly change with the increase of influent N/P ratio. At the proper influent conditions, the high P. helgolandica tsingtaoensis biomass and nutrient removal efficiency could be obtained in the microalgae membrane bioreactor, which could provide a theoretical basis for the application of the system for wastewater treatment.

Carbon-negative and high-rate nutrient removal using mixotrophic microalgae

Mixotrophic microalgae have demonstrated great potential for wastewater nutrient removal. How autotrophy/heterotrophy shares affect nutrient removal as well as carbon budget has not been understood. In this study, the autotrophy/heterotrophy shares in mixotrophy were quantified, and N removal rate and carbon budget under different mixotrophic autotrophy/heterotrophy shares were modeled. The results showed that mixotrophic N removal rate reached 2.09 mg L^-1h^-1, which was 53.18% and 37.98% higher than removal rates in autotrophic (0.97 mg L^-1h^-1) and heterotrophic (1.25 mg L^-1h^-1) controls. Mixotrophic-autotrophy and mixotrophic-heterotrophy contributed 1.15 mg L^-1h^-1 and 0.94 mg L^-1h^-1 in N removal, respectively. Model disclosed that at balanced share of 6:4, more than 2 mg L^-1h^-1N removal could be achieved, similar to bacterial nitrogen removal rate but with a negative carbon budget of 6.21 mg L^-1h^-1. Nutrient removal using mixotrophic microalgae would lead to carbon negative sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recycling.

Bacterial-algal coupling system for high strength mariculture wastewater treatment: Effect of temperature on nutrient recovery and microalgae cultivation

In the present study, bacterial-algal coupling system, an integration process of acidogenic fermentation and microalgae cultivation was used for high strength mariculture wastewater (HSMW) treatment, resource recovery and low-cost biomass production. The effect of temperature on Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) cultivation was investigated with culture medium of acidogenic liquid. The results showed that acidogenic liquid could be used as culture medium for C. vulgaris and higher biomass was obtained compared to control. The acidogenic liquid obtained at initial pH of 8 was the most suitable culture medium for C. vulgaris growth due to befitting C/N and considerable volatile fatty acids. Moreover, the optimum temperature for C. vulgaris cultivation was 25 °C and the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH₄⁺-N from acidogenic liquid could reach 94.4% and 68.8%, respectively. The outcome could create an innovative value chain with environmental sustainability and economic feasibility in aquaculture industry.

Mariculture wastewater treatment with Bacterial-Algal Coupling System (BACS): Effect of light intensity on microalgal biomass production and nutrient removal

Mariculture wastewater generated from the mariculture industry has increased public concern due to its impact on the sustainability of aquatic environments and aquaculture practices. Herein, the Bacterial-Algal Coupling System was applied for mariculture wastewater treatment. Microalgae growth in heterotrophy and mixotrophy (2000-8000 lux) was first compared. The best microalgal growth and nutrient removal were obtained at 5000 lux, where biomass productivity of microalgae was 0.465 g L^-1 d^-1, and 98.1% of chemical oxygen demand, 70.7% of ammonia-nitrogen, and 90.0% of total phosphorus were removed. To further understand the nutrient removal through microalgae cultivation, the enzyme activities involved in the Calvin cycle and the Tricarboxylic Acid cycle at different light intensities were determined. Under mixotrophic cultivation, there was a coordination between photosynthesis and heterotrophic metabolism in the agal cell, which resulted in a high algal biomass production and removal efficiency of nutrients. This study provided a novel insight into the bioremediation of mariculture wastewater and microalgae cultivation.

Enhancing microalgae growth and product accumulation with carbon source regulation: New perspective for the coordination between photosynthesis and aerobic respiration

The coordination between photosynthesis and aerobic respiration under mixotrophic cultivation can make a difference to the growth and biochemical composition of microalgae. However, the response of carbon metabolism to carbon source composition under mixotrophic microalgae cultivation has not been well studied. In this study, the synergistic effects of inorganic carbon (IC) and organic carbon (OC) supply on the growth and carbon metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris under mixotrophic cultivation were investigated. The increase of the proportion of HCO₃^- had a positive effect on the expression of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), which promoted the biomass production and carbon fixing. The activity of citrate synthase was attenuated with the increase of IC/OC ratio, indicating that the energy needed for the biomass production in groups with high IC/OC ratio was contributed by photoreaction. Biochemical analysis showed that CO₃^2- was more efficient than HCO₃^- for carbohydrate and lipid accumulation of Chlorella vulgaris, and the highest amount of carbohydrate (30.2%) and lipid (35.8%) was recorded with the combined use of CO₃^2- and glucose. The results could provide a new perspective on carbon metabolism and enzyme regulation in mixotrophic microalgae cultivation.
