Abstract
As the world's population and income levels continue to rise, there is a substantial increase in the demand for meat, which poses significant environmental challenges due to large-scale livestock production. This review explores the potential of microalgae as a sustainable protein source for meat analogues. The nutritional composition, functional properties, and environmental advantages of microalgae are analyzed. Additionally, current obstacles to large-scale microalgal food production are addressed, such as strain development, contamination risks, water usage, and downstream processing. The challenges associated with creating meat-like textures and flavors using techniques like extrusion and emulsion formation with microalgae are also examined. Lastly, considerations related to consumer acceptance, marketing, and regulation are summarized. By focusing on improvements in cultivation, structure, sensory attributes, and affordability, microalgae demonstrate promise as a transformative and eco-friendly protein source to enhance the next generation of meat alternatives.

Abstract
Microalgae can convert carbon dioxide into organic matter through photosynthesis. Thus, they are considered as an environment-friendly and efficient cell chassis for biologically active metabolites. Microalgal lipids are a class of organic compounds that can be used as raw materials for food, feed, cosmetics, healthcare products, bioenergy, etc., with tremendous potential for commercialization. In this review, we summarized the commercial lipid products from eukaryotic microalgae, and updated the mechanisms of lipid synthesis in microalgae. Moreover, we reviewed the enhancement of lipids, triglycerides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, pigments, and terpenes in microalgae via environmental induction and/or metabolic engineering in the past five years. Collectively, we provided a comprehensive overview of the products, biosynthesis, induced strategies and genetic engineering in microalgal lipids. Meanwhile, the outlook has been presented for the development of microalgal lipids industries, emphasizing the significance of the accurate analysis of lipid bioactivity, as well as the high-throughput screening of microalgae with specific lipids.

Abstract
Five fruit and vegetable byproducts were evaluated as carbon sources and media for beta-glucan production from Euglena gracilis. Orange peel showed the highest beta-glucan concentration (6.5 g/L) and productivity (1.9 g/L/day) when used as a medium. However, when employed as carbon sources, apple pomace showed the highest beta-glucan concentration (10.6 g/L) and productivity (3.5 g/L/day). The appropriate chemical oxygen demand/nitrogen ratio (71.1) and favorable carbon sources of apple contributed to beta-glucan production. Increasing sugar concentrations in apple pomace and orange peel from 10 to 30 g/L raised the beta-glucan concentration to 11.6 g/L. Using apple pomace and orange peel individually proved more effective than mixing them for beta-glucan production. Therefore, apple as a carbon source is the most effective fruit and vegetables byproduct for beta-glucan production. This is expected to reduce the cost of E. gracilis cultivation on a large-scale and contribute to the circular economy.

Abstract
Recently, the rising demand of the industry for natural phenolic antioxidant compounds has turned to the study of microalgae as potential sources. Yet, more economic substrates for microalgal cultivation are sought to lower production costs. To this end, the present work deals with the utilization of rice hull hydrolysate (RHH) as substrate for microalgae Botryococcus braunii through a novel two-stage cultivation system. Initially, RHH was optimized to maximize the contained nutrients while minimizing its inhibitors content. The optimum point was reached under 121 °C, 60 min, 2% (v/v) H2SO4, 30% (w/v) loading. Next, B. braunii was successfully grown first heterotrophically in RHH (25%, v/v), obtaining high biomass production (6.67 g L-1) and then autotrophically to enhance phenolics accumulation. At the end, a high phenolic content of 7.44 ± 0.60 mg Gallic Acid Equivalents g-1 DW was achieved from the produced biomass, thus highlighting the potential of this novel biotechnological method.

Abstract
Phycoremediation is gaining attention not only as a pollutant mitigation approach but also as one of the most cost-effective paths to achieve carbon neutrality. When compared to conventional treatment methods, phycoremediation is highly effective in removing noxious substances from wastewater and is inexpensive, eco-friendly, abundantly available, and has many other advantages. The process results in valuable bioproducts and bioenergy sources combined with pollutants capture, sequestration, and utilization. In this review, microalgae-based phycoremediation of various wastewaters for carbon neutrality and circular economy is analyzed scientometrically. Different mechanisms for pollutants removal and resource recovery from wastewaters are explained. Further, critical parameters that influence the engineering design and phycoremediation performance are described. A comprehensive knowledge map highlighting the microalgae potential to treat a variety of industrial effluents is also presented. Finally, challenges and future prospects for industrial implementation of phycoremediation towards carbon neutrality coupled with circular economy are discussed.

Abstract
Microalgae are regarded as a promising source of biodiesel. In contrast with conventional crops currently used to produce commercial biodiesel, microalgae can be cultivated on non-arable land, besides having a higher growth rate and productivity. However, microalgal biodiesel is not yet regarded as economically competitive, compared to fossil fuels and crop-based biodiesel; therefore, it is not commercially produced. This review provides an overall perspective on technologies with the potential to increase efficiency and reduce the general costs of biodiesel production from microalgae. Opportunities and challenges for large-scale production are discussed. We present the current scenario of Brazilian research in the field and show a successful case in the research and development of microalgal biodiesel in open ponds by Petrobras. This publicly held Brazilian corporation has been investing in research in this sector for over a decade.

Abstract
Coupling the cultivation of microalgae with wastewater treatment is a promising technology to recover bioresources from wastewater. However, toxic pollutants in wastewater seriously inhibit the growth of microalgae and the removal of pollutants. Phenolic acids are similar to phytohormones, could potentially relieve the toxicity to microalgae and simultaneously promote pollutant degradation and lipid accumulation. Chlorella and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) were utilized to simulate the toxic wastewater treatment, and the roles of two typical phenolic acids, such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA) and caffeic acid (CA), were explored. The 0.2 μM concentration of p-HBA or CA improved the specific growth rate by 7.6% by enhancing photosynthesis and DNA replication. The oxidative damage caused by 4-CP was reduced by 30.3-49.7% via the synthesis of more antioxidant enzymes and the direct scavenging of free radicals by phenolic acids. Furthermore, the 4-CP removal rate increased by 27.0%, and toxic 4-CP was degraded into non-toxic compounds. The phenolic acids did not change the 4-CP degradation pathway but accelerated its removal and detoxification by enhancing the expression of 4-CP degradation enzymes. Simultaneously, lipid production increased by 20.5-23.1% due to the upregulation of enzymes related to fatty acid and triacylglycerol synthesis. Trace phenolic acids stimulated the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling cascade and the calcium signaling pathway to regulate the physiology of the microalgae and protect cells from toxic stress. This study provides a promising new strategy for toxic wastewater treatment and bioresource recovery.

Abstract
Humic substances (HS) act as biostimulants for terrestrial photosynthetic organisms. Their effects on plants are related to specific HS features: pH and redox buffering activities, (pseudo)emulsifying and surfactant characteristics, capacity to bind metallic ions and to encapsulate labile hydrophobic molecules, ability to adsorb to the wall structures of cells. The specific properties of HS result from the complexity of their supramolecular structure. This structure is more dynamic in aqueous solutions/suspensions than in soil, which enhances the specific characteristics of HS. Therefore, HS effects on microalgae are more pronounced than on terrestrial plants. The reported HS effects on microalgae include increased ionic nutrient availability, improved protection against abiotic stress, including against various chemical pollutants and ionic species of potentially toxic elements, higher accumulation of value-added ingredients, and enhanced bio-flocculation. These HS effects are similar to those on terrestrial plants and could be considered microalgal biostimulant effects. Such biostimulant effects are underutilized in current microalgal biotechnology. This review presents knowledge related to interactions between microalgae and humic substances and analyzes the potential of HS to enhance the productivity and profitability of microalgal biotechnology.

Abstract
In recent years, the development of healthier foods, richer in nutraceutical or functional compounds, has been in great demand. Microalgae are attracting increasing attention, as their incorporation in foods and beverages can be a promising strategy to develop sustainable foods with improved nutritional profiles and a strong positive impacts on health. Despite the increasing market demand in plant-based foods, the popularity of fermented dairy foods has increased in the recent years since they are a source of microorganisms with health-promoting effects. In this context, the incorporation of microalgae in cheeses, fermented milks and other dairy products represents an interesting approach towards the development of innovative and added-value hybrid products based on animal proteins and enriched with vegetable origin ingredients recognized as extremely valuable sources of bioactive compounds. The effect of the addition of microalgal biomass (Chlorella vulgaris, Arthrospira platensis, Pavlova lutheri, and Diacronema vlkianum, among others) and its derivates on the physicochemical composition, colorimetric and antioxidant properties, texture and rheology behavior, sensory profile, and viability of starter cultures and probiotics in yogurt, cheese and ice cream is discussed in the current work. This review of the literature on the incorporation of microalgae in dairy products aims to contribute to a better understanding of the potential use of these unique food ingredients in the development of new sustainable products and of their beneficial effects on health. Considering the importance of commercialization, regulatory issues about the use of microalgae in dairy products are also discussed.

Abstract
Euglena gracilis, a phototrophic protist, is a valuable biomass producer that is often employed in sustainable development efforts. E. gracilis accumulates wax esters as byproducts during anaerobic ATP production via the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle, utilizing the storage carbohydrate β-1,3-glucan paramylon as the carbon source. Here, we report a library screening for chemical stimulators that accelerate both wax ester production and paramylon consumption. Among the 115 compounds tested, we identified nine compounds that increased wax ester production by more than 2.0-fold relative to the solvent control. In the presence of these nine compounds, the paramylon content decreased compared with the control experiment, and the residual paramylon content varied between 7% and 26% of the initial level. The most active compound, 1,4-diaminoanthracene-9,10-dione (OATQ008), stimulated wax ester production up to 2.7-fold within 24 h, and 93% of the cellular paramylon was consumed. In terms of the structural features of the chemical stimulators, we discuss the potential target sites to stimulate wax ester production in mitochondria under anaerobic conditions.

Abstract
Bioactive substances, displaying excellent biocompatibility, chemical stability, and processability, could be extensively applied in biomedicine and tissue engineering. In recent years, plant-based bioactive substances such as flavonoids, vitamins, terpenes, and lignin have received considerable attention due to their human health benefits and pharmaceutical/medical applications. Among them is lignin, an amorphous biomacromolecule mainly derived from the combinatorial radical coupling of three phenylpropane units (p-hydroxypenyl, guaiacyl, and syringyl) during lignification. Lignin possesses intrinsic bioactivities (antioxidative, antibacterial, anti-UV activities, etc.) against phytopathogens. Lignin also enhances the plant resistance (adaptability) against environmental stresses. The abundant structural features of lignin offer other significant bioactivities including antitumor and antivirus bioactivities, regulation of plant growth, and enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. This Review reports the latest research results on the bioactive potential of lignin and lignin-based substances in biomedicine, agriculture, and biomass conversion. Moreover, the interfacial reactions and bonding mechanisms of lignin with biotissue/cells and other constituents were also discussed, aiming at promoting the conversion or evolution of lignin from industrial wastes to value-added bioactive materials.
