Abstract
Astaxanthin (AST) exhibits potent antioxidant activity, effectively preventing neurological diseases and cancer. Presently, producing AST from microorganisms like Haematococcus pluvialis and Phaffia rhodozyma is a growing trend. This review summarizes the main research topics on AST in the past five years. AST plays a crucial role in cancer and diabetes prevention, as well as neuroprotection, however, the presence of both free and esterified forms of AST results in differences in their functionality and applications. The primary challenges in industrial production of natural AST lie in breeding high-yield natural producers and developing methods to enhance yield. The use of high-quality food matrix materials and preparation methods is crucial for the delivery system of loaded AST. This study elucidates the bottlenecks and future development directions encountered by natural AST during industrialization, aiming to promote the healthy and rapid growth of the food industry.

Abstract
Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring xanthophyll with powerful: antioxidant, antitumor, and antibacterial properties that are widely employed in food, feed, medicinal and nutraceutical industries. Currently, chemical synthesis dominates the world's astaxanthin market, but the increasing demand for natural products is shifting the market for natural astaxanthin. Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis) is the factory source of natural astaxanthin when grown in optimal conditions. Currently, various strategies for the production of astaxanthin have been proposed or are being developed in order to meet its market demand. This up-to-date review scrutinized the current approaches or strategies that aim to increase astaxanthin yield from H. pluvialis. We have emphasized the genetic and environmental parameters that increase astaxanthin yield. We also looked at the transcriptomic dynamics caused by environmental factors (phytohormones induction, light, salt, temperature, and nutrient starvation) on astaxanthin synthesizing genes and other metabolic changes. Genetic engineering and culture optimization (environmental factors) are effective approaches to producing more astaxanthin for commercial purposes. Genetic engineering, in particular, is accurate, specific, potent, and safer than conventional random mutagenesis approaches. New technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas9 coupled with omics and emerging computational tools, may be the principal strategies in the future to attain strains that can produce more astaxanthin. This review provides accessible data on the strategies to increase astaxanthin accumulation natively. Also, this review can be a starting point for new scholars interested in H. pluvialis research.

Abstract
High-value metabolites, such as carotenoids, lipids, and proteins, are synthesized by microalgae and find applications in various fields, including food, health supplements, and cosmetics. However, the potential of the microalgal industry to serve these sectors is constrained by low productivity and high energy consumption. Environmental stressors can not only stimulate the accumulation of secondary metabolites in microalgae but also induce oxidative stress, suppressing cell growth and activity, thereby resulting in a decrease in overall productivity. Using melatonin (MT) under stressful conditions is an effective approach to enhance the productivity of microalgal metabolites. This review underscores the role of MT in promoting the accumulation of high-value metabolites and enhancing stress resistance in microalgae under stressful and wastewater conditions. It discusses the underlying mechanisms whereby MT enhances metabolite synthesis and improves stress resistance. The review also offers new perspectives on utilizing MT to improve microalgal productivity and stress resistance in challenging environments.

Abstract
Astaxanthin is a red-colored secondary metabolite with excellent antioxidant properties, typically finds application as foods, feed, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and medications. Astaxanthin is usually produced synthetically using chemicals and costs less as compared to the natural astaxanthin obtained from fish, shrimps, and microorganisms. Over the decades, astaxanthin has been naturally synthesized from Haematococcus pluvialis in commercial scales and remains exceptional, attributed to its higher bioactive properties as compared to synthetic astaxanthin. However, the production cost of algal astaxanthin is still high due to several bottlenecks prevailing in the upstream and downstream processes. To that end, the present study intends to review the recent trends and advancements in astaxanthin production from microalgae. The structure of astaxanthin, sources, production strategies of microalgal astaxanthin, and factors influencing the synthesis of microalgal astaxanthin were discussed while detailing the pathway involved in astaxanthin biosynthesis. The study also discusses the relevant downstream process used in commercial scales and details the applications of astaxanthin in various health related issues.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (AX), a lipid-soluble pigment belonging to the xanthophyll carotenoids family, has recently garnered significant attention due to its unique physical properties, biochemical attributes, and physiological effects. Originally recognized primarily for its role in imparting the characteristic red-pink color to various organisms, AX is currently experiencing a surge in interest and research. The growing body of literature in this field predominantly focuses on AXs distinctive bioactivities and properties. However, the potential of algae-derived AX as a solution to various global environmental and societal challenges that threaten life on our planet has not received extensive attention. Furthermore, the historical context and the role of AX in nature, as well as its significance in diverse cultures and traditional health practices, have not been comprehensively explored in previous works. This review article embarks on a comprehensive journey through the history leading up to the present, offering insights into the discovery of AX, its chemical and physical attributes, distribution in organisms, and biosynthesis. Additionally, it delves into the intricate realm of health benefits, biofunctional characteristics, and the current market status of AX. By encompassing these multifaceted aspects, this review aims to provide readers with a more profound understanding and a robust foundation for future scientific endeavors directed at addressing societal needs for sustainable nutritional and medicinal solutions. An updated summary of AXs health benefits, its present market status, and potential future applications are also included for a well-rounded perspective.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (3,3-dihydroxy-β, β-carotene-4,4-dione) is a ketocarotenoid synthesized by Haematococcus pluvialis/lacustris, Chromochloris zofingiensis, Chlorococcum, Bracteacoccus aggregatus, Coelastrella rubescence, Phaffia rhodozyma, some bacteria (Paracoccus carotinifaciens), yeasts, and lobsters, among others However, it is majorly synthesized by Haematococcus lacustris alone (about 4%). The richness of natural astaxanthin over synthetic astaxanthin has drawn the attention of industrialists to cultivate and extract it via two stage cultivation process. However, the cultivation in photobioreactors is expensive, and converting it in soluble form so that it can be easily assimilated by our digestive system requires downstream processing techniques which are not cost-effective. This has made the cost of astaxanthin expensive, prompting pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies to switch over to synthetic astaxanthin. This review discusses the chemical character of astaxanthin, more inexpensive cultivating techniques, and its bioavailability. Additionally, the antioxidant character of this microalgal product against many diseases is discussed, which can make this natural compound an excellent drug to minimize inflammation and its consequences.

Abstract
In the current research, a novel microalgae strain was isolated from Yajiageng Red Rock Beach and identified as Acutodesmus sp. HLGY. To obtain high-efficiency production of lutein from algae, the feasibility of using melatonin (MT) to increase lutein yield of Acutodesmus sp. HLGY was evaluated. Under the 7.5 μM MT treatment, the lutein content and lutein productivity were 17.44 mg g-1 and 46.50 mg L-1 d-1, which were 1.53 times those of the control. Furthermore, exogenous MT increased the transcripts of key lutein synthesis- and antioxidant enzyme-related genes. Simultaneously, the carbohydrate, protein, and cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and lipid content were suppressed. More importantly, the ethylene and γ-aminobutyric acid contents were markedly increased by MT, which may be linked to the increase in lutein biosynthesis. This study proposes a valuable biotechnological approach for lutein production via a novel Acutodesmus sp. strain using MT induction and provides insights into the role of MT in promoting lutein biosynthesis.

Abstract
Phytomelatonin, a multifunctional molecule that has been found to be present in all plants examined to date, has an important role in plants as a modulatory agent (a biostimulator) that improves plant tolerance to both biotic and abiotic stress. We present a review of phytomelatonin that considers its roles in plant metabolism and in particular its interactions with plant hormone network. In the primary metabolism of plants, melatonin improves the rate and efficiency of photosynthesis, as well related factors such as stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2, and Rubisco activity. It has also been shown to down-regulate some senescence transcription factors. Melatonin up-regulates many enzyme transcripts related to carbohydrates (including sucrose and starch), amino acids, and lipid metabolism, optimizing N, P, and S uptake. With respect to the secondary metabolism, clear increases in polyphenol, glucosinolate, terpenoid, and alkaloid contents have been described in numerous melatonin-treated plants. Generally, the most important genes of these secondary biosynthesis pathways have been found to be up-regulated by melatonin. The great regulatory capacity of melatonin is a result of its control of the redox and plant hormone networks. Melatonin acts as a plant master regulator, up-/down-regulating different plant hormone levels and signalling, and is a key player in redox homeostasis. It has the capacity to counteract diverse critical situations such as pathogen infections and abiotic stresses, and provide plants with varying degrees of tolerance. We propose possible future applications of melatonin for crop improvement and post-harvest product preservation.

Abstract
To obtain higher yield of natural astaxanthin, the present study aims to develop a viable and economic induction strategy for astaxanthin production comprising succinic acid (SA) combined with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS). The biomass (1.33 g L-1), astaxanthin concentration (44.96 mg L-1), astaxanthin content (163.55 pg cell-1), and lipid content (55.34%) were achieved under 1.0 mM SA and 100 μM NaHS treatment. These results were concomitant with enhanced hydrogen sulfide (H2S) but diminished reactive oxide species (ROS). Further study discovered that endogenous H2S could improve astaxanthin and lipid coproduction under SA induction by mediating related gene transcript levels and ROS signalling. Additionally, the concentrations of biomass and astaxanthin increased to 2.14 g L-1 and 66.25 mg L-1, respectively, under the induction of SA and NaHS in a scaled-up bioreactor. Briefly, the work proposed a novel feasible strategy for high yields of biomass and astaxanthin by H. pluvialis.

Abstract
Sodium acetate (NaAc) supplementation, often used to increase the growth of H. pluvialis under low light, but promotes cell death under high light; its underlying reasons and solutions are rarely reported. Here, NaAc supplementation was found to rapidly increase pondus hydrogenii (pH) of culture solution, elevate reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cause cell death immediately under higher light. Adjusting pH of NaAc supplemented culture solution with 10 mM Tris-HCl once before high light significantly reduced cell mortality and increased astaxanthin yield. When verified in a 5-litre photobioreactor, this novel method produced over 4.0% of dry weight (DW) astaxanthin within only 8-10 days. In summary, this study explained reasons underlying NaAc supplementation-induced cell death and provided an rapid, easy and effective method to produce high amount of astaxanthin in H. pluvialis.

Abstract
With the goal of cost-effective and high-efficient microalgae-based biodiesel production, this study evaluated the feasibility of the joint strategy concerning myo-inositol (MI) and salinity stress on lipid productivity of Monoraphidium sp. QLY-1 in molasses wastewater (MW). The maximal lipid productivity (147.79 mg L-1 d-1) was obtained under combined 0.5 g L-1 MI and 10 g L-1 NaCl treatment, which was 1.40-fold higher than the control. Meanwhile, the nutrients removal from MW was markedly increased under MI-NaCl treatment. Moreover, exogenous MI upregulated key lipogenic genes' expressions, activated autophagic activity and ethylene (ET) signaling, and ultimately alleviated the salinity-induced damage via reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling. Further pharmacologic experiment confirmed the indispensable role of ET in the lipogenesis progress under the combined treatment. These data demonstrated the combined salinity stress and MI treatment to be capable for lipid hyperproduction and wastewater nutrients removal, which contributes to practically integrating the microalgae cultivation with wastewater treatment.
