Biohydrogen production using algae: Potentiality, economics and challenges

In Situ Growth of CuBi2O4/Bi2O3 Z-Scheme Heterostructures for Bifunctional Photocatalytic Applications

In this study, we present an in situ solvothermal approach for synthesizing a highly efficient bifunctional CuBi2O4/Bi2O3 composite catalyst for applications in H2 production and the removal of organic pollutants. Various characterization techniques, including XRD, UV-vis DRS, SEM, TEM, and EIS, were used to characterize the prepared catalyst. Density functional theory calculations confirmed a Z-scheme mechanism, revealing the charge transfer mechanism from the Bi2O3 surface to the CuBi2O4 surface. The composite exhibited a photocurrent of 2.83 × 104 A/cm2 and a hydrogen production rate of 526 μmolg-1h-1 under natural sunlight. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated efficient degradation of RhB up to 58% in 120 min under 50 W LED illumination. Additionally, multiple recycling tests confirmed its high stability and recyclability, making it a promising candidate for various applications in the field of photocatalysis.

Emerging bio-capture strategies for greenhouse gas reduction: Navigating challenges towards carbon neutrality

Greenhouse gas emissions are significantly contributing to climate change, posing one of the serious threats to our planet. Addressing these emissions urgently is imperative to prevent irreversible planetary changes. One effective long-term mitigation strategy is achieving carbon neutrality. Although numerous countries aim for carbon neutrality by 2050, only a few are on track to realize this ambition. Existing technological solutions, including chemical absorption, cryogenic separation, and membrane separation, are available but tend to be costly and time intensive. Bio-capture methods present a promising opportunity in greenhouse gas mitigation research. Recent developments in biotechnology for capturing greenhouse gases have demonstrated both effectiveness and long-term benefits. This review emphasizes the recent advancements in bio-capture techniques, showcasing them as dependable and economical solutions for carbon neutrality. The article briefly outlines various bio-capture methods and underscores their potential for industrial application. Moreover, it investigates into the challenges faced when integrating bio-capture with carbon capture and storage technology. The study concludes by exploring the recent trends and prospective enhancements in ecosystem revitalization and industrial decarbonization through green conversion techniques, reinforcing the path towards carbon neutrality.

Nonsterile Process for Biohydrogen Production: Recent Updates, Challenges, and Opportunities

Hydrogen (H2), a clean and versatile energy carrier, has recently gained significant attention as a potential solution for reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy systems. The yield and efficiency of the biological H2 production process primarily depend on sterilization conditions. Various strategies, such as heat inactivation and membrane-based sterilization, have been used to achieve desirable yields via microbial fermentation. Almost every failed biotransformation process is linked to nonsterile conditions at any reaction stage. Therefore, the production of renewable biofuels as alternatives to fossil fuels is more attractive. Pure sugars have been widely documented as a costly feedstock for H2 production under sterile conditions. Biotransformation under nonsterile conditions is more desirable for stable and sustainable operation. Low-cost feeds, such as biowaste, are considered suitable alternatives, but they require appropriate sterilization to overcome the limitations of inherited or contaminating microbes during H2 production. This article describes the status of microbial fermentative processes for H2 production under nonsterile conditions and discusses strategies to improve such processes for sustainable, cleaner production.

Fermentation of micro- and macroalgae as a way to produce value-added products

Fermentation of both microalgae and macroalgae is one of the most efficient methods of obtaining valuable value-added products due to the minimal environmental pollution and the availability of economic benefits, as algae do not require arable land and drift algae and algal bloom biomass are considered waste and must be recycled and their fermentation waste utilized. The compounds found in algae can be effectively used in the fuel, food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries, depending on the type of fermentation used. Products such as methane and hydrogen can be produced by anaerobic digestion and dark fermentation of algae, and lactic acid and its polymers can be produced by lactic acid fermentation of algae. Article aims to provide an overview of the different types potential of micro- and macroalgae fermentation, the advantages and disadvantages of each type considered, and the economic feasibility of algal fermentation for the production of various value-added products.

Using algae in Li-ion batteries: A sustainable pathway toward greener energy storage

This paper reviews and analyzes the innovations and advances in using algae and their derivatives in different parts of Li-ion batteries. Applications in Li-ion battery anodes, electrolytes, binders, and separators were discussed. Algae provides a sustainable feedstock for different materials that can be used in Li-ion batteries, such as carbonaceous material, biosilica, biopolymers, and other materials that have unique micro- and nano-structures that act as biotemplates for composites structure design. Natural materials and biotemplates provided by algae have various advantages, such as electrochemical and thermal stability, porosity that allows higher storage capacity, nontoxicity, and other properties discussed in the paper. Results reveal that despite algae and its derivatives being a promising renewable feedstock for different applications in Li-ion batteries, more research is yet to be performed to evaluate its feasibility of being used in the industry.

New insights into enhancement of bio-hydrogen production through encapsulated microalgae with alginate under visible light irradiation

The production of green hydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuels. The current study focuses on the design of microalgae as a catalyst in bioelectrochemical systems for the generation of biohydrogen. Furthermore, the abovementioned target could be achieved by optimizing different parameters, including strains of microalgae, different optical filters, and their shapes. Synechocystis sp. PAK13 (Ba9), Micractinium sp. YACCYB33 (R4), and Desmodesmus intermedius (Sh42) were used and designed as free cells and immobilized microalgae for evaluating their performance for hydrogen production. Alginate was applied for immobilization not only for protecting the immobilized microalgae from stress but also for inhibiting the agglomeration of microalgae and improving stability. The amount of studied immobilized microalgae was 0.01 g/5 ml algae-dissolved in 10 ml alginate gel at 28 °C, 12 h of light (light intensity 30.4 μmol m-2 s-1), and 12 h of darkness with continual aeration (air bump in every strain flask) at pH = 7.2 ± 0.2 in 0.05 %wuxal buffer which has 3.7 ionic strength. Different modalities, including FTIR, UV, and SEM, were performed for the description of selected microalgae. The surface morphology of Ba9 with alginate composite (immobilized Ba9) appeared as a stacked layer with high homogeneity, which facilitates hydrogen production from water. The conversion efficiencies of the immobilized microalgae were evaluated by incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE). Under optical filters, the optimum IPCE value was ∼ 7 % at 460 nm for immobilized Ba9. Also, its number of hydrogen moles was calculated to be 16.03 mmol h-1 cm-2 under optical filters. The electrochemical stability of immobilized Ba9 was evaluated through repetitive 100 cycles as a short-term stability test, and the curve of chrono-amperometry after 30 min in 0.05 %wuxal at a constant potential of 0.9 V for 30 min of all studied samples confirmed the high stability of all sample and the immobilized Ba9 has superior activity than others.

A review on biological biohydrogen production: Outlook on genetic strain enhancements, reactor model and techno-economics analysis

Modernisation of industrial and transportation sector would have not imaginable without the help of fossil fuels, but constant usage has led to many environmental concerns. As a step forward, for safer next generation living we are forced to look into green fuels like bio‑hydrogen and higher alcohols. This review mainly focuses on bio‑hydrogen production via biological pathways, genetic improvements, knowledge gap, economics, and future directions. Dark and photo fermentation process with the factor influence the process (pH regulation, temperature, hydraulic retention time, organic loading rate, Maintenance, Nutrient) is studied. Integration of dark fermentation and microbial electrolysis cell is the most trending progression for sustainable bio‑hydrogen production. Genetic improvement of microbe for biohydrogen production via inactivation of hydrogenase (H2ase) and improve oxygen tolerant H2ase. In future, bioaugmentation, multidisciplinary integrated process and microbial electrolysis needs to be experimented in industrial level scale for successful commercialization. About 41.47 mmol H2/g DCW h at 40 g/L of optimum biohydrogen production was obtained through glycerol fermentation. From the studies, the cost of biohydrogen production was found to high with respect to the direct bio photolysis it cost around $7.24 kg-1; for indirect bio photolysis it cost around $7.54 kg-1 and for fermentation it cost around $7.61 kg-1.

Kinetic model derived from machine learning for accurate prediction of microalgal hydrogen production via conversion from low thermally pre-treated palm kernel expeller waste

The depletion of fossil fuel sources and increase in energy demands have increased the need for a sustainable alternative energy source. The ability to produce hydrogen from microalgae is generating a lot of attention in both academia and industry. Due to complex production procedures, the commercial production of microalgal biohydrogen is not yet practical. Developing the most optimum microalgal hydrogen production process is also very laborious and expensive as proven from the experimental measurement. Therefore, this research project intended to analyse the random time series dataset collected during microalgal hydrogen productions while using various low thermally pre-treated palm kernel expeller (PKE) waste via machine learning (ML) approach. The analysis of collected dataset allowed the derivation of an enhanced kinetic model based on the Gompertz model amidst the dark fermentative hydrogen production that integrated thermal pre-treatment duration as a function within the model. The optimum microalgal hydrogen production attained with the enhanced kinetic model was 387.1 mL/g microalgae after 6 days with 1 h thermally pre-treated PKE waste at 90 °C. The enhanced model also had better accuracy (R2 = 0.9556) and net energy ratio (NER) value (0.71) than previous studies. Finally, the NER could be further improved to 0.91 when the microalgal culture was reused, heralding the potential application of ML in optimizing the microalgal hydrogen production process.

A Short Review on Current Status and Obstacles in the Sustainable Production of Biohydrogen from Microalgal Species

Biohydrogen is an economical fuel which has enormous promise as an alternative energy source. The synthesis of biohydrogen can be done more affordably and sustainably using microalgae. For the generation of biohydrogen and the treatment of wastewater, microalgae derived from effluent have been showing very impressive outcomes. In comparison to traditional fuel sources, microalgae have benefits. Microalgae are capable of fixing ambient Carbon dioxide and converting it to carbohydrates, which are subsequently processed biochemically to provide fuel. When compared to terrestrial crops, they require less water and minerals for production. But besides these benefits, there are certain technological restrictions on the scale-up implementations of microalgae bioenergy. In this work, we explored the production of biohydrogen from several types of microalgae. The process of producing biohydrogen is affected by a number of variables, including pH, substrate concentration, the kinds of microalgal species, and others. The most recent studies and difficulties related to each stage of the biohydrogen manufacturing process are outlined. The synthesis of microalgal biohydrogen is improved using promising approaches that are discussed. Also, the specific future direction are covered. The possibility for microalgae-based production of biohydrogen to serve as an environmentally friendly and carbon-free biofuel solution that might handle the impending fuel scarcity was demonstrated. However, additional study is required on both the upstream and downstream processes of the synthesis of biohydrogen.

Epitomizing biohydrogen production from microbes: Critical challenges vs opportunities

Hydrogen is a clean and green biofuel choice for the future because it is carbon-free, non-toxic, and has high energy conversion efficiency. In exploiting hydrogen as the main energy, guidelines for implementing the hydrogen economy and roadmaps for the developments of hydrogen technology have been released by several countries. Besides, this review also unveils various hydrogen storage methods and applications of hydrogen in transportation industry. Biohydrogen productions from microbes, namely, fermentative bacteria, photosynthetic bacteria, cyanobacteria, and green microalgae, via biological metabolisms have received significant interests off late due to its sustainability and environmentally friendly potentials. Accordingly, the review is as well outlining the biohydrogen production processes by various microbes. Furthermore, several factors such as light intensity, pH, temperature and addition of supplementary nutrients to enhance the microbial biohydrogen production are highlighted at their respective optimum conditions. Despite the advantages, the amounts of biohydrogen being produced by microbes are still insufficient to be a competitive energy source in the market. In addition, several major obstacles have also directly hampered the commercialization effors of biohydrogen. Thus, this review uncovers the constraints of biohydrogen production from microbes such as microalgae and offers solutions associated with recent strategies to overcome the setbacks via genetic engineering, pretreatments of biomass, and introduction of nanoparticles as well as oxygen scavengers. The opportunities of exploiting microalgae as a suastainable source of biohydrogen production and the plausibility to produce biohydrogen from biowastes are accentuated. Lastly, this review addresses the future perspectives of biological methods to ensure the sustainability and economy viability of biohydrogen production.

Light-dependent biohydrogen production: Progress and perspectives

The fourth industrial revolution anticipates energy to be sustainable, renewable and green. Hydrogen (H₂) is one of the green forms of energy and is deemed a possible solution to climate change. Light-dependent H₂ production is a promising method derived from nature's most copious resources: solar energy, water and biomass. Reduced environmental impacts, absorption of carbon dioxide, relative efficiency, and cost economics made it an eye-catching approach. However, low light conversion efficiency, limited ability to utilize complex carbohydrates, and the O₂ sensitivity of enzymes result in low yield. Isolation of efficient H₂ producers, development of microbial consortia having a synergistic impact, genetically improved strains, regulating bidirectional hydrogenase activity, physiological parameters, immobilization, novel photobioreactors, and additive strategies are summarized for their possibilities to augment the processes of bio-photolysis and photo-fermentation. The challenges and future perspectives have been addressed to explore a sustainable way forward in a bio-refinery approach.

Unlocking the high-rate continuous performance of fermentative hydrogen bioproduction from fruit and vegetable residues by modulating hydraulic retention time

Harnessing fruit-vegetable waste (FVW) as a resource to produce hydrogen via dark fermentation (DF) embraces the circular economy concept. However, there is still a need to upgrade continuous FVW-DF bioprocessing to enhance hydrogen production rates (HPR). This study aims to investigate the influence of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the DF of FVW by mixed culture. A stirred tank reactor under continuous mesophilic conditions was operated for 47 days with HRT stepwise reductions from 24 to 6 h, leading to organic loading rates between 47 and 188 g volatile solids (VS)/L-d. The optimum HRT of 9 h resulted in an unprecedented HPR from FVW of 11.8 NL/L-d, with a hydrogen yield of 95.6 NmL/g VS fed. Based on an overarching inspection of hydrogen production in conjunction with organic acids and carbohydrates analyses, it was hypothesized that the high FVW-to-biohydrogen conversion rate achieved was powered by lactate metabolism.

Microalgal Feedstock for Biofuel Production: Recent Advances, Challenges, and Future Perspective

Globally, nations are trying to address environmental issues such as global warming and climate change, along with the burden of declining fossil fuel reserves. Furthermore, countries aim to reach zero carbon emissions within the existing and rising global energy crisis. Therefore, bio-based alternative sustainable feedstocks are being explored for producing bioenergy. One such renewable energy resource is microalgae; these are photosynthetic microorganisms that grow on non-arable land, in extreme climatic conditions, and have the ability to thrive even in sea and wastewater. Microalgae have high photosynthetic efficiencies and biomass productivity compared to other terrestrial plants. Whole microalgae biomass or their extracted metabolites can be converted to various biofuels such as bioethanol, biodiesel, biocrude oil, pyrolytic bio-oil, biomethane, biohydrogen, and bio jet fuel. However, several challenges still exist before faster and broader commercial application of microalgae as a sustainable bioenergy feedstock for biofuel production. Selection of appropriate microalgal strains, development of biomass pre-concentrating techniques, and utilization of wet microalgal biomass for biofuel production, coupled with an integrated biorefinery approach for producing value-added products, could improve the environmental sustainability and economic viability of microalgal biofuel. This article will review the current status of research on microalgal biofuels and their future perspective.

Critical review of biochemical pathways to transformation of waste and biomass into bioenergy

In recent years, biofuel or biogas have become the primary source of bio-energy, providing an alternative to conventionally used energy that can meet the growing energy demand for people all over the world while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Enzyme hydrolysis in bioethanol production is a critical step in obtaining sugars fermented during the final fermentation process. More efficient enzymes are being researched to provide a more cost-effective technique during enzymatic hydrolysis. The exploitation of microbial catabolic biochemical reactions to produce electric energy can be used for complex renewable biomasses and organic wastes in microbial fuel cells. In hydrolysis methods, a variety of diverse enzyme strategies are used to promote efficient bioethanol production from various lignocellulosic biomasses like agricultural wastes, wood feedstocks, and sea algae. This paper investigates the most recent enzyme hydrolysis pathways, microbial fermentation, microbial fuel cells, and anaerobic digestion in the manufacture of bioethanol/bioenergy from lignocellulose biomass.

Photobiological effects of converting biomass into hydrogen - Challenges and prospects

In comparison to other methods of producing hydrogen, the production of biohydrogen is significantly less harmful to the surrounding ecosystem when it was produced from the biological origin such as microalgae. It could take the place of conventional fossil fuels while avoiding the emission of greenhouse gases. Hydrogen produced from biomass feedstocks is considered an effective solution in moving toward a decarbonized economy. Biohydrogen is a clean energy source that has gained global attention for adoption as it promises to mitigate climate change and human environmental damage. Through the circular economy framework, sustainable biohydrogen production with other bioproducts while addressing issues such as waste management is possible. This study presents a comprehensive review of the various biomass feedstocks and processing technologies associated with biohydrogen generation, as well as the possible integration of existing industries into a circular bioeconomy framework. The currently standing challenges and future perspectives are also discussed.

Current perspectives, future challenges and key technologies of biohydrogen production for building a carbon-neutral future: A review

Microalgae-based biohydrogen technologies could be a sustainable and economical approach to produce hydrogen from a renewable source, while simultaneously promoting the absorption of carbon dioxide. This review highlights the current perspectives of biohydrogen production as an alternate source of energy. In addition, future challenges associated with biohydrogen production at large-scale application, storage and transportation are included. Key technologies in producing biohydrogen are finally described in building a carbon-neutral future.

Microalgae-derived hydrogen production towards low carbon emissions via large-scale outdoor systems

Hydrogen as a clean fuel is receiving attention because it generates only water and a small amount of nitrogen oxide upon combustion. Biohydrogen production using microalgae is considered to be a highly promising carbon-neutral technology because it can secure renewable energy while efficiently reducing CO2 emissions. However, previous studies have mainly focused on improving the biological performance of microalgae; these approaches have struggled to achieve breakthroughs in commercialization because they do not heavily consider the complexity of the entire production process with microalgae, including large-scale cultivation, biomass harvest, and biomass storage. This work presents an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art technologies focused on large-scale cultivation systems with efficient downstream processes. Considering the individual processes of biohydrogen production, strategies are discussed to minimize carbon emissions and improve productivity simultaneously. A comprehensive understanding of microalgae-derived biohydrogen production suggests future directions for realizing environmental and economic sustainability.
