Abstract
Antibiotic fermentation residue, which is generated from the microbial antibiotic production process, has been a troublesome waste faced by the pharmaceutical industry. Dark fermentation is a potential technology to treat antibiotic fermentation residue in terms of renewable H2 generation and waste management. However, the inherent antibiotic in antibiotic fermentation residue may inhibit its dark fermentation performance, and current understanding on this topic is limited. This investigation examined the impact of the inherent antibiotic on the dark H2 fermentation of Cephalosporin C (CEPC) fermentation residue, and explored the mechanisms from the perspectives of bacterial communities and functional genes. It was found that CEP-C in the antibiotic fermentation residue significantly inhibited the H2 production, with the H2 yield decreasing from 17.2 mL/g-VSadded to 12.5 and 9.6 mL/g-VSadded at CEP-C concentrations of 100 and 200 mg/L, respectively. CEP-C also prolonged the H2-producing lag period. Microbiological analysis indicated that CEP-C remarkably decreased the abundances of high-yielding H2-producing bacteria, as well as downregulated the genes involved in hydrogen generation from the"pyruvate pathway" and"NADH pathway", essentially leading to the decline of H2 productivity. The present work gains insights into how cephalosporin antibiotics influence the dark H2 fermentation, and provide guidance for mitigating the inhibitory effects.

Abstract
Over the years, extensive research has gone into fermentative hydrogen production using pure and mixed cultures from waste biomass with promising results. However, for up-scaling of hydrogen production mixed cultures are more appropriate to overcome the operational difficulties such as a metabolic shift in response to environmental stress, and the need for a sterile environment. Mixed culture biotechnology (MCB) is a robust and stable alternative with efficient waste and wastewater treatment capacity along with co-generation of biohydrogen and platform chemicals. Mixed culture being a diverse group of bacteria with complex metabolic functions would offer a better response to the environmental variations encountered during biohydrogen production. The development of defined mixed cultures with desired functions would help to understand the microbial community dynamics and the keystone species for improved hydrogen production. This review aims to offer an overview of the application of MCB for biohydrogen production.

Abstract
Population growth has stimulated rising demand for agro-food products and economic activity for many years, negatively impacting the ecosystem and non-renewable resource consumption. Algeria confronts the monumental challenge of effectively choosing how to nourish everyone on a more congested globe. However, food loss is a significant issue that worsens as Algerians' population expands and food consumption increases. In Algeria, food production and processing of food items, which include fruits, vegetables, and cereals, generate a considerable amount of by-products, with no commercial exploitation and a negative environmental impact, generating enormous socioeconomic problems. These by-products are essential sources of products with high levels of added value that can be applied in different sectors. They have no studies to measure the scope of food loss in the Algerian food industry. In this background, our research aims to quantify the loss in the Algerian food industry generated by the transformation of various agricultural products, directly affecting the economy and food availability for the population. The research utilizes a mixed methods approach, including coefficients, production statistics transformed, and data analysis; the findings reveal that a significant portion of fruits and vegetables are lost in the Algerian food industry, suggesting that minimizing food loss can help companies minimize costs and mitigate the adverse environmental effects of food production. Finally, the study proposes practical options to minimize food loss to create a long-term food system in Algeria.

Abstract
This review article critically evaluates the significance of adopting advanced biofuel production techniques that employ lignocellulosic materials, waste biomass, and cutting-edge technology, to achieve sustainable environmental stewardship. Through the analysis of conducted research and development initiatives, the study highlights the potential of these techniques in addressing the challenges of feedstock supply and environmental impact and implementation policies that have historically plagued the conventional biofuel industry. The integration of state-of-the-art technologies, such as nanotechnology, pre-treatments and enzymatic processes, has shown considerable promise in enhancing the productivity, quality, and environmental performance of biofuel production. These developments have improved conversion methods, feedstock efficiency, and reduced environmental impacts. They aid in creating a greener and sustainable future by encouraging the adoption of sustainable feedstocks, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and accelerating the shift to cleaner energy sources. To realize the full potential of these techniques, continued collaboration between academia, industry representatives, and policymakers remains essential.

Abstract
Potato peel waste (PPW), a zero-value by-product generated from potato processing, is a promising fermentation substrate due to its large quantity of starch, nonstarch polysaccharides, lignin, protein, and lipid. Rhizopus oryzae is a filamentous fungus that is mainly known as a lactic acid producer and can ferment various agro-wastes. This study aimed to use R. oryzae for the fermentation of PPW. A series of batch fermentations were conducted to investigate the effects of different PPW loading rates (2%-8%) and particle sizes (0-4 mm). Under an initial PPW loading rate of 8% and particle size of 1-2 mm, the maximum ethanol (18.83 g/L) and lactic acid (3.14 g/L) concentrations, the highest ethanol (9.41 g/L·day) and lactic acid (1.89 g/L·day) average production rates were obtained. Under these conditions, the yield of ethanol and lactic acid was 0.235 g/gPPW and 0.039 g/gPPW, respectively. R. oryzae was shown to utilize PPW as a substrate to produce value-added bioproducts such as ethanol (major product) and lactic acid.

Abstract
Cu is widely present in the feedstocks of dark fermentation, which can inhibit H2 production efficiency of the process. However, current understanding on the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu, especially the microbiological mechanism, is still lacking. This study investigated the inhibitory mechanisms of Cu2+ on fermentative hydrogen production by metagenomics sequencing. Results showed that the exposure to Cu2+ reduced the abundances of high-yielding hydrogen-producing genera (e.g. Clostridium sensu stricto), and remarkably down-regulated the genes involved in substrate membrane transport (e.g., gtsA, gtsB and gtsC), glycolysis (e.g. PK, ppgK and pgi-pmi), and hydrogen formation (e.g. pflA, fdoG, por and E1.12.7.2), leading to significant inhibition on the process performances. The H2 yield was reduced from 1.49 mol H2/mol-glucose to 0.59 and 0.05 mol H2/mol-glucose upon exposure to 500 and 1000 mg/L of Cu2+, respectively. High concentrations of Cu2+ also reduced the rate of H2 production and prolonged the H2-producing lag phase.
