Scale-up of the bioelectrochemical system: Strategic perspectives and normalization of performance indices

Effect of bicarbonate on hydrogen generation by Zero-Valent iron and its impact on generation of acetic acid by seven different inocula

This study demonstrates the substantial role of bicarbonate within a zero-valent iron (ZVI) system in hydrogen evolution, demonstrating that heightened concentration levels notably enhance hydrogen output. The acetic acid performance production of seven different inocula was examined when exposed to ZVI and CO2 as the sole carbon source, separately. Along the seven inocula, river and constructed wetland sludges show the highest production rates at 300 mg/L day-1 and 269 mg/L day-1, respectively. Acetobacterium levels significantly rose in CO2-enriched environments, particularly in river and wetland sludges. Moreover, bacteria attached to ZVI showed accelerated hydrogen consumption and acetic acid production compared to their freely suspended or ZVI-detached counterparts when hydrogen was primarily added externally. This study highlighted the positive effect of high concentrations of soluble CO₂, which acted both as a reactant with ZVI for hydrogen production and as a substrate for homoacetogens, leading to high acetic acid generation.

Advancing towards electro-bioremediation scaling-up: On-site pilot plant for successful nitrate-contaminated groundwater treatment

The potential of nitrate electro-bioremediation has been fully demonstrated at the laboratory scale, although it has not yet been fully implemented due to the challenges associated with scaling-up bioelectrochemical reactors and their on-site operation. This study describes the initial start-up and subsequent stable operation of an electro-bioremediation pilot plant for the treatment of nitrate-contaminated groundwater on-site (Navata site, Spain). The pilot plant was operated under continuous flow mode for 3 months, producing an effluent suitable for drinking water in terms of nitrates and nitrites (<50 mg NO3- L-1; 0 mg NO2- L-1). A maximum nitrate removal rate of 0.9 ± 0.1 kg NO3- m-3 d-1 (efficiency 82 ± 18 %) was achieved at a cathodic hydraulic retention time (HRTcat) of 2.0 h with a competitive energy consumption of 4.3 ± 0.4 kWh kg-1 NO3-. Under these conditions, the techno-economic analysis estimated an operational cost of 0.40 € m-3. Simultaneously, microbiological analyses revealed structural heterogeneity in the reactor, with denitrification functionality concentrated predominantly from the centre to the upper section of the reactor. The most abundant groups were Pseudomonadaceae, Rhizobiaceae, Gallionellaceae, and Xanthomonadaceae. In conclusion, this pilot plant represents a significant advancement in implementing this technology on a larger scale, validating its effectiveness in terms of nitrate removal and cost-effectiveness. Moreover, the results validate the electro-bioremediation in a real environment and encourage further investigation of its potential as a water treatment.

Optimizing electrochemically active microorganisms as a key player in the bioelectrochemical system: Identification methods and pathways to large-scale implementation

The rapid global economic growth driven by industrialization and population expansion has resulted in significant issues, including reliance on fossil fuels, energy scarcity, water crises, and environmental emissions. To address these issues, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have emerged as a dual-purpose solution, harnessing electrochemical processes and the capabilities of electrochemically active microorganisms (EAM) to simultaneously recover energy and treat wastewater. This review examines critical performance factors in BES, including inoculum selection, pretreatment methods, electrodes, and operational conditions. Further, authors explore innovative approaches to suppress methanogens and simultaneously enhance the EAM in mixed cultures. Additionally, advanced techniques for detecting EAM are discussed. The rapid detection of EAM facilitates the selection of suitable inoculum sources and optimization of enrichment strategies in BESs. This optimization is essential for facilitating the successful scaling up of BES applications, contributing substantially to the realization of clean energy and sustainable wastewater treatment. This analysis introduces a novel viewpoint by amalgamating contemporary research on the selective enrichment of EAM in mixed cultures. It encompasses identification and detection techniques, along with methodologies tailored for the selective enrichment of EAM, geared explicitly toward upscaling applications in BES.

Bioremediation of hydrocarbon by co-culturing of biosurfactant-producing bacteria in microbial fuel cell with Fe2O3-modified anode

The most common type of environmental contamination is petroleum hydrocarbons. Sustainable and environmentally friendly treatment strategies must be explored in light of the increasing challenges of toxic and critical wastewater contamination. This paper deals with the bacteria-producing biosurfactant and their employment in the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-containing waste through a microbial fuel cell (MFC) with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (exoelectrogen) as co-culture for simultaneous power generation. Staphylococcus aureus is isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and is effective in hydrocarbon degradation by utilizing hydrocarbon (engine oil) as the only carbon source. The biosurfactant was purified using silica-gel column chromatography and characterised through FTIR and GCMS, which showed its glycolipid nature. The isolated strains are later employed in the MFCs for the degradation of the hydrocarbon and power production simultaneously which has shown a power density of 6.4 W/m3 with a 93% engine oil degradation rate. A biogenic Fe2O3 nanoparticle (NP) was synthesized using Bambusa arundinacea shoot extract for anode modification. It increased the power output by 37% and gave the power density of 10.2 W/m3. Thus, simultaneous hydrocarbon bioremediation from oil-contamination and energy recovery can be achieved effectively in MFC with modified anode.

Selective butyric acid production from CO2 and its upgrade to butanol in microbial electrosynthesis cells

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising carbon utilization technology, but the low-value products (i.e., acetate or methane) and the high electric power demand hinder its industrial adoption. In this study, electrically efficient MES cells with a low ohmic resistance of 15.7 mΩ m2 were operated galvanostatically in fed-batch mode, alternating periods of high CO2 and H2 availability. This promoted acetic acid and ethanol production, ultimately triggering selective (78% on a carbon basis) butyric acid production via chain elongation. An average production rate of 14.5 g m-2 d-1 was obtained at an applied current of 1.0 or 1.5 mA cm-2, being Megasphaera sp. the key chain elongating player. Inoculating a second cell with the catholyte containing the enriched community resulted in butyric acid production at the same rate as the previous cell, but the lag phase was reduced by 82%. Furthermore, interrupting the CO2 feeding and setting a constant pH2 of 1.7-1.8 atm in the cathode compartment triggered solventogenic butanol production at a pH below 4.8. The efficient cell design resulted in average cell voltages of 2.6-2.8 V and a remarkably low electric energy requirement of 34.6 kWhel kg-1 of butyric acid produced, despite coulombic efficiencies being restricted to 45% due to the cross-over of O2 and H2 through the membrane. In conclusion, this study revealed the optimal operating conditions to achieve energy-efficient butyric acid production from CO2 and suggested a strategy to further upgrade it to valuable butanol.

Scale-up and techno-economic analysis of microbial electrolysis cells for hydrogen production from wastewater

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have demonstrated high-rate H₂ production while concurrently treating wastewater, but the transition in scale from laboratory research to systems that can be practically applied has encountered challenges. It has been more than a decade since the first pilot-scale MEC was reported, and in recent years, many attempts have been made to overcome the barriers and move the technology to the market. This study provided a detailed analysis of MEC scale-up efforts and summarized the key factors that should be considered to further develop the technology. We compared the major scale-up configurations and systematically evaluated their performance from both technical and economic perspectives. We characterized how system scale-up impacts the key performance metrics such as volumetric current density and H₂ production rate, and we proposed methods to evaluate and optimize system design and fabrication. In addition, preliminary techno-economic analysis indicates that MECs can be profitable in many different market scenarios with or without subsidies. We also provide perspectives on future development needed to transition MEC technology to the marketplace.

Understanding the impacts of intermittent electro field on the bioelectrochemical aniline degradation system: Performance, microbial community and functional enzyme

On account of the lack of a sustainable electron donor source and the inhibitory effect of aniline on denitrogenation make it tough to achieve simultaneous removal of aniline and nitrogen. Herein, the strategy of adjusting electric field mode was applied to the electro-enhanced sequential batch reactors (E-SBRs: R1 (continuous ON), R2 (2 h-ON/2 h-OFF), R3 (12 h-ON/12 h-OFF), R4 (in the aerobic phase ON), R5 (in the anoxic phase ON)) to treat aniline wastewater. Aniline removal rate reached approximately 99% in the five systems. Decreasing electrical stimulation interval from 12 to 2 h significantly improved the electron utilization efficiency for aniline degradation and nitrogen metabolism. The total nitrogen removal was achieved from 70.31% to 75.63%. Meanwhile, the hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers of Hydrogenophaga, Thauera, and Rhodospirillales, enriched in reactors of minor electrical stimulation interval. Accordingly, the expression of functional enzyme related to electron transport was incremental with the proper electrical stimulation frequency.

Regulation of denitrification performance and microbial topology by lights: Insight into wavelength effects towards microbiota

The low efficiency of conventional complete denitrification, as well as the unstable nitrite supply for partial-denitrification coupled anammox (PD/A) restrict the efficient removal of nitrogen from industrial wastewaters. Herein, we proposed an optical strategy to bidirectionally regulate denitrification by introducing lights at different wavelengths, and the underlying mechanisms were elucidated accordingly. It turned out that yellow light at wavelength of 590 nm accelerated denitrification by 35.4%, while blue light delayed denitrification with stable nitrite accumulation above 86.9% and high nitrate removal (99.8%). Microbial physiology and viability further supported the positive effects of yellow light on microbial activity. Additionally, despite the sluggish denitrification aroused by blue light, negligible cellular damage was observed. Antioxidant capability divergence, microbial community shifting and metabolic flux redirection contributed to the wavelength-dependent effects. Halomonas and Pseudomonas were identified as high-credit taxonomic biomarkers of yellow and blue light. As revealed by metabolomics, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, glutamate metabolism and alkaloid biosynthesis presented high impact values. Co-analysis of metabolomics and metagenomics based on microbial topology further distinguished pivotal metabolic pathways and genes. Oxidative phosphorylation contributed to the divergent denitrification performance through electron transfer chains, whereas glutamate and glutathione metabolism contributed to oxidative stress alleviation and mediated the metabolic flux between peroxisome and nitrogen metabolism. This study shed a light on the application of optical strategy to regulate denitrification performance and achieve either complete denitrification or PD/A.

Membrane-based water and wastewater treatment technologies: Issues, current trends, challenges, and role in achieving sustainable development goals, and circular economy

Membrane-based technologies are recently being considered as effective methods for conventional water and wastewater remediation processes to achieve the increasing demands for clean water and minimize the negative environmental effects. Although there are numerous merits of such technologies, some major challenges like high capital and operating costs . This study first focuses on reporting the current membrane-based technologies, i.e., nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and forward- and reverse-osmosis membranes. The second part of this study deeply discusses the contributions of membrane-based technologies in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) stated by the United Nations (UNs) in 2015 followed by their role in the circular economy. In brief, the membrane based processes directly impact 15 out of 17 SDGs which are SDG1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. However, the merits, challenges, efficiencies, operating conditions, and applications are considered as the basis for evaluating such technologies in sustainable development, circular economy, and future development.
