Abstract
The exploitation of stable, high-affinity, and low-cost nanoprobes is essential to develop immunoassays for real-time monitoring of foodborne pathogens, so as to safeguard human health. The possible interaction of the Fc fragment of antibodies with spA protein on Staphylococcus aureus will result in unexpected interference. To address this consideration, we described herein for the first time the development of nanobodies that by definition are devoid of the Fc fraction. These nanobodies directed against Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) were retrieved from a dedicated immune phage-displayed nanobody library. The binders showed superiority of low cost, strong stability, high binding affinity, and adequate load capacity. Thereafter, a phage-mediated sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was constructed by using Cs-Nb2 as an antigen-capturing antibody and phage-displayed Cs-Nb1 as a detection probe. To further enhance the sensitivity, a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CISA) was established by replacing the substrate from 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to luminol, providing a limit of detection of 1.04 × 104 CFU/mL, with a recovery of 98.15-114.63% for the detection of C. sakazakii in dairy products. The proposed nanobody-based phage-mediated sandwich CLISA shows various advantages, including high sensitivity, cost effectiveness, enhanced loading capacity of the enzyme, and high resistance to the matrix effect, providing a strategy for the design of immunoassays toward foodborne pathogens.

Abstract
Globally, food safety and security are receiving a lot of attention to ensure a steady supply of nutrient-rich and safe food. Nanotechnology is used in a wide range of technical processes, including the development of new materials and the enhancement of food safety and security. Nanomaterials are used to improve the protective effects of food and help detect microbial contamination, hazardous chemicals, and pesticides. Nanosensors are used to detect pathogens and allergens in food. Food processing is enhanced further by nanocapsulation, which allows for the delivery of bioactive compounds, increases food bioavailability, and extends food shelf life. Various forms of nanomaterials have been developed to improve food safety and enhance agricultural productivity, including nanometals, nanorods, nanofilms, nanotubes, nanofibers, nanolayers, and nanosheets. Such materials are used for developing nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, and nanomaterials to induce plant growth, genome modification, and transgene expression in plants. Nanomaterials have antimicrobial properties, promote plants' innate immunity, and act as delivery agents for active ingredients. Nanocomposites offer good acid-resistance capabilities, effective recyclability, significant thermostability, and enhanced storage stability. Nanomaterials have been extensively used for the targeted delivery and release of genes and proteins into plant cells. In this review article, we discuss the role of nanotechnology in food safety and security. Furthermore, we include a partial literature survey on the use of nanotechnology in food packaging, food safety, food preservation using smart nanocarriers, the detection of food-borne pathogens and allergens using nanosensors, and crop growth and yield improvement; however, extensive research on nanotechnology is warranted.

Abstract
Over the course of the last several decades, nanotechnology has garnered a growing amount of attention as a potentially valuable technology that has significantly impacted the food industry. Nanotechnology helps in enhancing the properties of materials and structures that are used in various fields such as agriculture, food, pharmacy, and so on. Applications of nanotechnology in the food market have included the encapsulation and distribution of materials to specific locations, the improvement of flavor, the introduction of antibacterial nanoparticles into food, the betterment of prolonged storage, the detection of pollutants, enhanced storage facilities, locating, identifying, as well as consumer awareness. Labeling food goods with nano barcodes helps ensure their security and may also be used to track their distribution. This review article presents a discussion about current advances in nanotechnology along with its applications in the field of food-tech, food packaging, food security, enhancing life of food products, etc. A detailed description is provided about various synthesis routes of nanomaterials, that is, chemical, physical, and biological methods. Nanotechnology is a rapidly improving the field of food packaging and the future holds great opportunities for more enhancement via the development of new nanomaterials and nanosensors.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are the most common feed and food contaminants affecting animals and humans, respectively; continuous exposure causes tremendous health problems such as kidney disorders, infertility, immune suppression, liver inflammation, and cancer. Consequently, their control and quantification in food materials is crucial. Biosensors are potential tools for the rapid detection and quantification of mycotoxins with high sensitivity and selectivity. Nanoliposomes (NLs) are vesicular carriers formed by self-assembling phospholipids that surround the aqueous cores. Utilizing their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high carrying capacity, researchers have employed NLs in biosensors for monitoring various targets in biological and food samples. The NLs are used for surface modification, signal marker delivery, and detection of toxins, bacteria, pesticides, and diseases. Here, we review marker-entrapped NLs used in the development of NL-based biosensors for mycotoxins. These biosensors are sensitive, selective, portable, and cost-effective analytical tools, and the resulting signal can be produced and/or amplified with or without destroying the NLs. In addition, this review emphasizes the benefits of the immunoliposome method in comparison with traditional detection approaches. We expect this review to serve as a valuable reference for researchers in this rapidly growing field. The insights provided may facilitate the rational design of next-generation NL-based biosensors.

Abstract
Cronobacter sakazakii is a foodborne, emerging opportunistic pathogen that causes severe bacteremia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis with a mortality rate of up to 80%. In this study, we developed a simple and sensitive fluorescent turn-off aptasensor with rolling circle amplification assay for viable C. sakazakii detection in powdered infant formula. The results showed that the proposed aptasensor has good performance and specificity for detecting viable C. sakazakii in pure culture and powdered infant formula samples within 3 h. Under the optimal reaction conditions, there is a linear relationship between fluorescent intensity at 490 nm and logarithmic concentration of C. sakazakii in the range of 2.7 × 105 to 2.7 × 102 cfu/mL, with a limit of detection of 2.7 × 102 cfu/mL in pure culture. The proposed aptasensor achieved a recovery of 104 to 111% in pure culture, and 96 to 107% in spiked powdered infant formula samples. The proposed aptasensor does not require complicated DNA extraction steps or antibodies, and can be performed at 37°C, making it a convenient and sensitive strategy for C. sakazakii detection.

Abstract
Infectious diseases are a potential risk for public health and the global economy. Fast and accurate detection of the pathogens that cause these infections is important to avoid the transmission of the diseases. Conventional methods for the detection of these microorganisms are time-consuming, costly, and not applicable for on-site monitoring. Biosensors can provide a fast, reliable, and point of care diagnostic. Nanomaterials, due to their outstanding electrical, chemical, and optical features, have become key players in the area of biosensors. This review will cover different nanomaterials that employed in electrochemical, optical, and instrumental biosensors for infectious disease diagnosis and how these contributed to enhancing the sensitivity and rapidity of the various sensing platforms. Examples of nanomaterial synthesis methods as well as a comprehensive description of their properties are explained. Moreover, when available, comparative data, in the presence and absence of the nanomaterials, have been reported to further highlight how the usage of nanomaterials enhances the performances of the sensor.

Abstract
Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) is a foodborne pathogen associated with bacterial meningitis, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis in premature and immuno-compromised infants. C. sakazakii is typically acquired by ingesting contaminated powdered infant formula (PIF). The growing demand for a safe food supply requires rapid detection of foodborne pathogens for delivering safe-to-consume food to consumers. In the present study, we isolated C. sakazakii-specific aptamers using a centrifugation-based partitioning method (CBPM) instead of systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) process. Unlike SELEX, the CBPM reduces the evolution-loop time to obtain enriched probes, allowing the isolation of target-specific aptamers in a shorter time. The two aptamers (SC25 and SC45) isolated using the CBPM showed high affinity and specificity for C. sakazakii (Kd: 34 and 66 nM). Among the two aptamers, SC25 aptamer detected efficiently C. sakazakii in PIF with less cross-reactivity. Our results indicate that the isolated aptamers could be used for detecting C. sakazakii in PIF and reducing the overall testing time compared with the conventional C. sakazakii detection method.

Abstract
The high efficiency and accurate detection of foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms in food are a task of great social, economic, and public health importance. However, the contamination levels of target bacteria in food samples are very low. Owing to the background interference of food ingredients and negative impact of nontarget flora, the establishment of efficient pretreatment techniques is very crucial for the detection of food microorganisms. With the significant advantages of high specificity and great separation efficiency, immunomagnetic separation (IMS) assay based on immunomagnetic particles (IMPs) has been considered as a powerful system for the separation and enrichment of target bacteria. This paper mainly focuses on the development of IMS as well as their application in food microorganisms detection. First, the basic principle of IMS in the concentration of food bacteria is presented. Second, the effect of different factors, including the sizes of magnetic particles (MPs), immobilization of antibody and operation parameters (the molar ratio of antibody to MPs, the amount of IMPs, incubation time, and bacteria concentration) on the immunocapture efficiency of IMPs are discussed. The performance of IMPs in different food samples is also evaluated. Finally, the combination of IMS and various kinds of detection methods (immunology-based methods, nucleic acid-based methods, fluorescence methods, and biosensors) to detect pathogenic and spoilage organisms is summarized. The challenges and future trends of IMS are also proposed. As an effective pretreatment technique, IMS can improve the detection sensitivity and shorten their testing time, thus exhibiting broad prospect in the field of food bacteria detection.

Abstract
Microfluidic labchips have achieved much advancement in the molecular diagnosis of foodborne pathogens. Whereas difficulties in the flow control during the transportation of liquid fluids can occur and should be overcome. Manipulations of reaction temperature and the complex procedures from sample pre-treatment to analysis in a single chip device are major obstacles for the on-site application. Thus, the efficient temperature control of samples without any flow of reaction fluids in microfluidic channels of plastic chip and the simplest protocol omitting post-enrichment processing steps may overcome these limitations represented by the stability and the complexity, respectively. This study aims to develop a novel type of labchip and thermocycler specialized for the gene amplification in microfluidic channels and to evaluate the detectability by sensing the minimum recoverable level of Cronobacter in powdered infant formula (PIF). We developed a thermocycling device accelerating reactions through dual heating-blocks optimized to control temperatures of samples in microfluidic-channels by direct contact with labchip sequentially and repetitively. The structural design of microfluidic channels was to eliminate interference factors associated with the optical detection of fluorescent signals (without distortion due to air bubbles in the reaction chamber). To improve the applicability, a portable device and simplified operation to allow direct loading of samples in the chip without post-enrichment procedures were also adopted. Detection performance was evaluated by a sensitivity/specificity tests using 50 isolates of Cronobacter. Cross-reactivity tests for non-Cronobacter organisms and gDNA [human, raw materials of PIF (cow, soybean)] showed that there was no interference-factor causing false-positive results. In terms of the applied research conducted by using PIF, the enrichment of samples without broth medium (distilled water) displayed outstanding performance and 12 h of incubation facilitated detecting target at concentration as low as 1 CFU/300 g PIF (as initial contamination level) without post-enrichment treatment. Validation of the operation conditions using 30 commercial PIF products was also consistent. The present study presents a novel approach of microfluidic technology with perspective to not only the performance and the practicability [easy-to-implement protocol, portable materials, cost-effectiveness (the use of a miniaturized plastic chip requires a minimum level of materials)] for on-site diagnosis.

Abstract
In this study, we describe the development of an automated immunomagnetic separation device combined with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detecting foodborne bacteria. Immunomagnetic separation (IMS) is a well-known method for the separation and concentration of target bacteria from a large volume of food samples. Magnetic beads functionalized with an antibody provide selectivity for target bacteria such as Escherichia coli O157:H7. Moreover, compared to conventional methods, real-time PCR enables high-sensitivity detection of target bacteria. The method proposed in this study involves three steps: (1) pre-enrichment, (2) automated IMS and concentration of target bacteria, and (3) detection of target bacteria by real-time PCR. Using food samples with a working sample volume as large as 250 mL, the whole process only requires 3 h. As a result, target bacteria in the range of 101–102 colony-forming units per mg or g of sample can be detected in food samples, such as milk, ground beef, and cabbage, by using the proposed approach. We anticipate that the automated IMS system combined with real-time PCR will contribute to the development of a fully automated system for detecting foodborne bacteria and serve as a multi-tester for a variety of bacterial strains in the capacity of a sample-to-answer device in the near future.

Abstract
Cronobacter sakazakii is an important opportunistic food-borne pathogen, and it can cause severe diseases with main symptoms including neonatal meningitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis. For the achievement of practical and convenient detection of viable C. sakazakii, a simple and robust strategy based on the cascade signal amplification of RT-PCR triggered G-quadruplex DNAzyme catalyzed reaction was firstly used to develop an effective and sensitive DNAzyme electrochemical assay. Without viable C. sakazakii in the samples there are no RT-PCR and DNAzyme products, which can cause a weak electrochemical response. Once viable C. sakazakii exists in the samples, an obvious enhancement of the electrochemical response can be achieved after the target signal is amplified by RT-PCR and the resulting DNAzyme, which catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 with the assistance of the cofactor hemin. Our novel assay can be performed in a range of 2.4 × 107 CFU mL-1 to 3.84 × 104 CFU mL-1 (R2 = 0.9863), with a detection limit of 5.01 × 102 CFU mL-1. Through the assay of 15 real samples, electrochemical detection assay provided the same results as conventional detection methods. Therefore, detection of viable C. sakazakii based on G-quadruplex DNAzyme electrochemical assay with RT-PCR demonstrates the significant advantages of high sensitivity, low cost and simple manipulation over existing approaches and offers an opportunity for potential application in pathogen detection.

Abstract
Scombroid poisoning in fish-based and other food products has raised concerns due to toxicity outbreaks and incidences associated with histamine, thus measuring the amount of histamine toxic molecule is considered crucial quality indicator of food safety and human health. In this study, liposome-based measurement of histamine was performed via rupturing mechanism of sulforhodamine B dye encapsulated anti-histamine antibody conjugated liposomal nanovesicles. The immunosensing ability of immuno-liposomal format was assessed by monitoring the fluorescence at excitation/emission wavelength of 550/585 nm. Immuno-liposomal format assays were considered, one based on single wash procedure (Method 1), which had a detection limit of 10 ppb and quantification limit 15-80 ppb. While Method 2 based on one-by-one wash procedure had a detection limit of 2-3 ppb and quantification limit 8.5 ppb-200 ppm that required 2 h 30 min to perform. In view of better quantification limit, Method 2 was chosen for further tests required to validate its applicability in real samples. The feasibility of Method 2 was reconfirmed in fresh mackerel fish, and canned fish (tuna and salmon) with a similar detection limits but with low amplified fluorescence signals and sufficient levels of histamine recovery from fresh mackerel (73.50-99.98%), canned tuna (79.08-103.74%) and salmon (74.56-99.02%). The specificity and method accuracy were expressed as % CV in the range 5.34%-8.48%. Overall, the developed multi-well sensing system (Method 2) showed satisfactory specificity, cost effectiveness, rapidity, and stability for monitoring histamine toxicity as a practical food diagnostic device.

Abstract
The efficient progress in nanotechnology has transformed many aspects of food science and the food industry with enhanced investment and market share. Recent advances in nanomaterials and nanodevices such as nanosensors, nano-emulsions, nanopesticides or nanocapsules are intended to bring about innovative applications in the food industry. In this review, the current applications of nanotechnology for packaging, processing, and the enhancement of the nutritional value and shelf life of foods are targeted. In addition, the functionality and applicability of food-related nanotechnologies are also highlighted and critically discussed in order to provide an insight into the development and evaluation of the safety of nanotechnology in the food industry.

Abstract
Dairy-related food safety outbreaks, such as food-borne pathogen contamination, mycotoxin contamination, and veterinary drug contamination, sometimes happen and have been reported all over the world, affecting human health and, in some cases, leading to death. Thus, rapid yet robust detection methods are needed to monitor milk and milk powder for the presence of hazardous substances. The lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) is widely used in onsite testing because of its rapidity, simplicity, and convenience. In this review, we describe some traditional LFI used to detect hazardous substances in milk and milk powder. Furthermore, we discuss recent advances in LFI that aim to improve sensitivity or detection efficiency. These advances include the use of novel label materials, development of signal amplification systems, design of multiplex detection systems, and the use of nucleic acid-based LFI.

Abstract
The rapid development of nanotechnology has transformed many domains of food science, especially those that involve the processing, packaging, storage, transportation, functionality, and other safety aspects of food. A wide range of nanostructured materials (NSMs), from inorganic metal, metal oxides, and their nanocomposites to nano-organic materials with bioactive agents, has been applied to the food industry. Despite the huge benefits nanotechnology has to offer, there are emerging concerns regarding the use of nanotechnology, as the accumulation of NSMs in human bodies and in the environment can cause several health and safety hazards. Therefore, safety and health concerns as well as regulatory policies must be considered while manufacturing, processing, intelligently and actively packaging, and consuming nano-processed food products. This review aims to provide a basic understanding regarding the applications of nanotechnology in the food packaging and processing industries and to identify the future prospects and potential risks associated with the use of NSMs.

Abstract
Cronobacter sakazakii is a foodborne pathogen that can cause a rare, septicemia, life-threatening meningitis, and necrotizing enterocolitis in infants. In general, standard methods for pathogen detection rely on culture, plating, colony counting and polymerase chain reaction DNA-sequencing for identification, which are time, equipment and skill demanding. Recently, nanoparticle- and surface-based immunoassays have increasingly been explored for pathogen detection. We investigate the functionalization of gold nanoparticles optimized for irreversible and specific binding to C. sakazakii and their use for spectroscopic detection of the pathogen. We demonstrate how 40-nm gold nanoparticles grafted with a poly(ethylene glycol) brush and functionalized with polyclonal antibodies raised against C. sakazakii can be used to specifically target C. sakazakii. The strong extinction peak of the Au nanoparticle plasmon polariton resonance in the optical range is used as a label for detection of the pathogens. Individual binding of the nanoparticles to the C. sakazakii surface is also verified by transmission electron microscopy. We show that a high degree of surface functionalization with anti-C. sakazakii optimizes the detection and leads to a detection limit as low as 10 CFU/mL within 2 h using a simple cuvette-based UV-Vis spectrometric readout that has great potential for further optimization.

Abstract
Cronobacter species have been associated with disease outbreaks and sporadic infections, particularly in premature and immunocompromised infants. Cronobacter species can cause foodborne infections such as neonatal meningitis, septicaemia and necrotising enterocolitis. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to control and monitor the Cronobacter species in food, especially in powdered infant formula (PIF) and other baby foods. Therefore, in this review, the isolation and prevalence of Cronobacter species in infant food including PIF and the recent advance of detection methods are discussed for the better understanding on the current research status of Cronobacter species.

Abstract
A simple one-pot synthesis of biocompatible and antifouling magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) was developed. The process involves co-precipitation and in situ coating of zwitterionic copolymer poly[(methacrylic acid)-co-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine)] (PMAMPC). The influence of one-step and two-step coating methods on the performance of modified Fe3O4NP was investigated. The PMAMPC-Fe3O4NP with a narrow particle size distribution obtained from the two-step approach were highly stable in aqueous media within a wide range of pH. The particles exhibited superparamagnetic behavior with high saturation magnetization values so that they could be easily separated from solution by a magnet. Their antifouling characteristics against 2 selected proteins, lysozyme (LYZ) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), as a function of copolymer molecular weight and composition were also evaluated. Moreover, taking advantage of having carboxyl groups in the coated copolymer, the PMAMPC-Fe3O4NP were conjugated with a model biomolecular probe, biotin. The biotin-immobilized PMAMPC-Fe3O4NP were then tested for their specific capturing of a target molecule, streptavidin. The results have demonstrated the potential of PMAMPC-Fe3O4NP prepared by the two-step in situ coating method for probe immobilization and subsequent biomagnetic separation of target molecules. The fact that the developed functionalizable magnetite nanoparticles are biocompatible and antifouling also opens up the possibility of their use in other biomedical-relevant applications. Abstract
Safety of food is a noteworthy issue for consumers and the food industry. A number of complex challenges associated with food engineering and food industries, including quality food production and safety of the food through effective and feasible means can be explained by nanotechnology. However, nanoparticles have unique physicochemical properties compared to normal macroparticles of the same composition and thus could interact with living system in surprising ways to induce toxicity. Further, few toxicological/safety assessments have been performed on nanoparticles, thereby necessitating further research on oral exposure risk prior to their application to food. Liposome nanoparticles are viewed as attractive novel materials by the food and medical industries. For example, nanoencapsulation of bioactive food compounds is an emerging application of nanotechnology. In several food industrial practices, liposome nanoparticles have been utilized to improve flavoring and nutritional properties of food, and they have been examined for their capacity to encapsulate natural metabolites that may help to protect the food from spoilage and degradation. This review focuses on ongoing advancements in the application of liposomes for food and pharma sector.

Abstract
Biosensors for the rapid, specific, and sensitive detection of analytes play a vital role in healthcare, drug discovery, food safety, and environmental monitoring. Although a number of sensing concepts and devices have been developed, many longstanding challenges to obtain inexpensive, easy-to-use, and reliable sensor platforms remain largely unmet. Nanomaterials offer exciting possibilities for enhancing the assay sensitivity and for lowering the detection limits down to single-molecule resolution. In this review, we present an overview of liposomes and lipid bilayers in biosensing applications. Lipid assemblies in the form of spherical liposomes or two-dimensional planar membranes have been widely used in the design of biosensing assays; in particular, we highlight a number of recent promising developments of biosensors based on liposomes in suspension, liposome arrays, and lipid bilayers arrays. Assay sensitivity and specificity are discussed, advantages and drawbacks are reviewed, and possible further developments are outlined.

Abstract
Extracellular respiring bacteria (ERB) are a group of bacteria capable of transferring electrons to extracellular acceptors and have important application in environmental remediation. In this study, a decomposable quantum-dots (QDs)/DNA nanosphere probe was developed for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of ERB. The QDs/DNA nanosphere was self-assembled from QDs-streptavidin conjugate (QDs-SA) and Y-shaped DNA nanostructure that is constructed based on toehold-mediated strand displacement. It can release numerous fluorescent QDs-SA in immunomagnetic separation (IMS)-based immunoassay via simple biotin displacement, which remarkably amplifies the signal of antigen-antibody recognizing event. This QDs/DNA-nanosphere-based IMS-fluorescent immunoassay is ultrasensitive for model ERB Shewanella oneidensis, showing a wide detection range between 1.0 cfu/mL and 1.0 × 108 cfu/mL with a low detection limit of 1.37 cfu/mL. Moreover, the proposed IMS-fluorescent immunoassay exhibits high specificity, acceptable reproducibility and stability. Furthermore, the proposed method shows acceptable recovery (92.4-101.4%) for detection of S. oneidensis spiked in river water samples. The proposed IMS-fluorescent immunoassay advances an intelligent strategy for rapid and ultrasensitive quantitation of low-abundance analyte and thus holds promising potential in food, medical and environmental applications.

Abstract
A non-labeled, portable plasmonic biosensor-based device was developed to enable the ultra-sensitive and selective detection of Salmonella typhimurium in pork meat samples. Specifically, a plasmonic sensor, using the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to achieve a regulated diameter of 20 nm for the AuNP monolayers, was used to conduct high-density deposition on a transparent substrate, which produced longitudinal wavelength extinction shifts via a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) signal. The developed aptamers conjugated to the LSPR sensing chips revealed an ultra-sensitive upper limit of detection (LOD) of approximately 104 cfu/mL for S. typhimurium in pure culture under the optimal assay conditions, with a total analysis time of 30–35 min. When the LSPR sensing chips were applied on artificially contaminated pork meat samples, S. typhimurium in the spiked pork meat samples was also detected at an LOD of 1.0 × 104 cfu/mL. The developed method could detect S. typhimurium in spiked pork meat samples without a pre-enrichment step. Additionally, the LSPR sensing chips developed against S. typhimurium were not susceptible to any effect of the food matrix or background contaminant microflora. These findings confirmed that the developed gold nanoparticle-aptamer-based LSPR sensing chips could facilitate sensitive detection of S. typhimurium in food samples.

Abstract
Nowadays, viruses of foodborne origin such as norovirus and hepatitis A are considered major causes of foodborne gastrointestinal illness with widespread distribution worldwide. A number of foodborne outbreaks associated with food products of animal and non-animal origins, which often involve multiple cases of variety of food streams, have been reported. Although several viruses, including rotavirus, adenovirus, astrovirus, parvovirus, and other enteroviruses, significantly contribute to incidence of gastrointestinal diseases, systematic information on the role of food in transmitting such viruses is limited. Most of the outbreak cases caused by infected food handlers were the source of 53% of total outbreaks. Therefore, prevention and hygiene measures to reduce the frequency of foodborne virus outbreaks should focus on food workers and production site of food products. Pivotal strategies, such as proper investigation, surveillance, and reports on foodborne viral illnesses, are needed in order to develop more accurate measures to detect the presence and pathogenesis of viral infection with detailed descriptions. Moreover, molecular epidemiology and surveillance of food samples may help analysis of public health hazards associated with exposure to foodborne viruses. In this present review, we discuss different aspects of foodborne viral contamination and its impact on human health. This review also aims to improve understanding of foodborne viral infections as major causes of human illness as well as provide descriptions of their control and prevention strategies and rapid detection by advanced molecular techniques. Further, a brief description of methods available for the detection of viruses in food and related matrices is provided.

Abstract
An immunomagnetic separation method using antibody-coated Dynabeads® Protein G was developed for specific and efficient separation of Staphylococcus aureus in lettuce and whole milk. The amount of immunomagnetic beads (IMBs) and conjugation conditions were optimized. A high capture efficiency was obtained with 0.4 mg of IMBs, an immunoreaction time of 20 min, and a separation time of 1 min without wash. Under optimal conditions, the capture efficiency (CE) for 100-105 CFU/mL of S. aureus was higher than 91.46%. The IMBs showed high specificity even with a high constant number (107 CFU/mL) of Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, and Lactobacillus plantarum. The CE of IMBs against S. aureus at concentrations from 102 to 105 CFU/mL ranged from 78.70 to 94.77% for lettuce and 60.0 to 73.27% for milk samples. This IMS can be an appropriate selection for combining with bacterial detection method or efficient isolation procedure for S. aureus from foods.

Abstract
The current scenario regarding the widespread Zika virus (ZIKV) has resulted in numerous diagnostic studies, specifically in South America and in locations where there is frequent entry of travelers returning from ZIKV-affected areas, including pregnant women with or without clinical symptoms of ZIKV infection. The World Health Organization, WHO, announced that millions of cases of ZIKV are likely to occur in the USA in the near future. This situation has created an alarming public health emergency of international concern requiring the detection of this life-threatening viral candidate due to increased cases of newborn microcephaly associated with ZIKV infection. Hence, this review reports possible methods and strategies for the fast and reliable detection of ZIKV with particular emphasis on current updates, knowledge, and new hypotheses that might be helpful for medical professionals in poor and developing countries that urgently need to address this problem. In particular, we emphasize liposome-based biosensors. Although these biosensors are currently among the less popular tools for human disease detection, they have become useful tools for the screening and detection of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and viruses because of their versatile advantageous features compared to other sensing devices. This review summarizes the currently available methods employed for the rapid detection of ZIKV and suggests an innovative approach involving the application of a liposome-based hypothesis for the development of new strategies for ZIKV detection and their use as effective biomedicinal tools.

Abstract
This study aimed to optimize the applicability of an immunoliposome-based immunomagnetic concentration and separation assay to facilitate rapid detection of Cronobacter sakazakii in powdered infant formula (PIF). To determine the detection limit, specificity, and pre-enrichment incubation time (0, 4, 6, and 8 h), assay tests were performed with different cell numbers of C. sakazakii (2 × 100 and 2 × 101 CFU/ml) inoculated in 10 g of PIF. The assay was able to detect as few as 2 cells of C. sakazakii/10 g of PIF sample after 6 h of pre-enrichment incubation with an assay time of 2 h 30 min. The assay was assessed for cross-reactivity with other bacterial strains and exhibited strong specificity to C. sakazakii. Moreover, the assay method was applied to the detection of C. sakazakii in PIF without pre-enrichment steps, and the results were compared with INC-ELISA and RT-PCR. The developed method was able to detect C. sakazakii in spiked PIF without pre-enrichment, whereas INC-ELISA failed to detect C. sakazakii. In addition, when compared with the results obtained with RT-PCR, our developed assay required lesser detection time. The developed assay was also not susceptible to any effect of the food matrix or background contaminant microflora.

Abstract
With increasing adulteration, food safety analysis has become an important research field. Nanomaterials-based biosensing holds great potential in designing highly sensitive and selective detection strategies necessary for food safety analysis. This review summarizes various function types of nanomaterials, the methods of functionalization of nanomaterials, and recent (2014-present) progress in the design and development of nanobiosensing for the detection of food contaminants including pathogens, toxins, pesticides, antibiotics, metal contaminants, and other analytes, which are sub-classified according to various recognition methods of each analyte. The existing shortcomings and future perspectives of the rapidly growing field of nanobiosensing addressing food safety issues are also discussed briefly.
