Abstract
We have synthesized a one-pot, three-component pyran-based fluorescence chemosensor using onion extract as a green catalyst. The confirmed structure of the 1:2 binding of receptor SPR-2-picric acid adduct revealed that the pyran-based receptor accommodated two guest picric acid molecules through non-covalent interactions. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy show high selectivity and sensitivity towards picric acid. The 1D/2D NMR and Job's plot analysis show the complexation and stoichiometric binding of the receptor SPR-2 with picric acid are 1:2. The 1H NMR spectral studies confirm that the formation of receptor SPR-2-picric acid adduct via weak hydrogen bonding. The cooperativity of the receptor SPR-2-picric acid adduct shows negative cooperativity due to the weak hydrogen bonding of receptor SPR-2 and picric acid. Further, the density functional theory (DFT) confirmed the molecular level interaction of the SPR-2 and receptor SPR-2-Picric acid adduct. The receptor was effectively used to assess picric acid concentrations in real water samples.

Abstract
Picric acid (PA) is highly water-soluble, the fact makes it stand out as the most hazardous environment pollutant. Therefore, accurate determination of PA is of great significance for human health and environmental protection. Herein, a novel indole-based fluorescent sensor (H1) with good water solubility and fluorescence stability was reported. H1 exhibited 'turn-off' fluorescence response for PA with fast reaction rate (<30 s), unique specificity and excellent selectivity and high sensitivity (limit of detection = 34 nM). Further, H1 was successfully applied to detect PA in real samples (tap water, Yangtze River, Xuanwu Lake, soil, food, fish and shrimp) with satisfactory recoveries at three spiking levels ranging from 98.0 to 112.0 %. In addition, H1 displayed high biocompatibility in mung beans and fresh blood. Moreover, aiming to attain portable analysis, H1 was composited with biomass cellulose paper (H1-FP) and integrated with smartphone for construction as a solid-state fluorescence platform to achieve fast and visual detection of PA in suit with significant stability, high sensitively and selectivity. The establishment of this sensing approach is expected to offer new insight into rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of major pollutants for food and environmental safety.

Abstract
Carbon dots are emerging fluorescent nanomaterials with unique physical and chemical properties and a wide range of applications. Herein, we have designed and successfully synthesized thermally stable green emissive nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with a photoluminescent quantum yield of 11.32% through facile solvent-free carbonization. NCDs demonstrated zero thermal quenching upon various temperatures modulating from 20 to 80 °C. The green emissive NCDs perform very stably even after heating them at 80 °C for 1 h. The thermal stability mechanism demonstrates that C═O and C═N functional groups control the particle aggregation and protect the fluorescent hub from photo-oxidation and thermal oxidation. Highly biocompatible CDs exhibit bright, stable, and multicolor emissions in T-ca cells under hot circumstances (25-45 °C). Additionally, NCDs offer long-term stability in the biosystem, as evidenced by the fact that the cell retains its brightness about 70% after prolonging the incubation time to 8 days. Furthermore, the fluorescent NCDs are utilized as in vivo imaging agents in the hot environment as they display bright and thermally stable imaging (27-45 °C) under 488 nm excitation. The results confirmed that the produced thermally stable NCDs could be used in biology and related medical fields that require hot environment imaging.

Determination of 2, 6-dipicolinic acid as an Anthrax biomarker based on the enhancement of copper nanocluster fluorescence by reversible aggregation-induced emission. Mikrochim Acta 2023; 190:291. Abstract
The weak fluorescence efficiency of copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) limits their wide applications in biosensing and bioimaging areas, while the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect is anticipated to increase their luminescence intensity. Herein, the weak red emission of Cu NCs is increased considerably by the addition of lanthanide Tb3+, ascribed to the AIE effect. Monitoring of spores contamination can be carried out by determining the level of 2, 6-dipicolinic acid (DPA), which is a marker of spores. Due to the stronger synergy between DPA and Tb3+ for its clamped configuration of adjacent pyridine nitrogen group with the carboxylic acid group, the addition of DPA leads Tb3+ to be taken away from Cu NCs through a stronger coordination effect, causing Cu NCs to return to the dispersed state and weakened fluorescence. Based on this, an "off-on-off" fluorescent probe for DPA sensing was built, in which Tb3+ was used as a bridge to achieve AIE enhanced fluorescence effect on Cu NCs as well as a specific recognizer of DPA. The detection range for DPA was 0.1-60 μM and the detection limit was 0.06 μM, which was much lower than the infectious dose of anthrax spores. Since DPA is a unique biomarker for bacterial spores, the method was applied to the detection of actual bacterial spores and satisfactory results were obtained with a detection limit of 4.9*103 CFU mL-1.

Abstract
It is of great importance to develop the highly efficient fluorescence strategy for rapid/sensitive detection of metam-sodium (MES) in evaluating its residual safety, especially in fresh vegetables. Herein, we prepared an organic fluorophore (thiochrome, TC) and glutathione-capped copper nanoclusters (GSH-CuNCs), and their combination (TC/GSH-CuNCs) was sucessfully employed as a ratiometric fluoroprobe by means of the blue-red dual emission. The fluorescence intensities (FIs) of TC decreased upon the addition of GSH-CuNCs via the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. When fortified at the constant levels of GSH-CuNCs and TC, MES substantially reduced the FIs of GSH-CuNCs, while this was not the case in the FIs of TC except for the prominent red-shift of ∼30 nm. Compared to the previous fluoroprobes, the TC/GSH-CuNCs based fluoroprobe supplied wider linear range of 0.2-500 μM, lower detection limit (60 nM), and satisfactory fortification recoveries (80-107%) for MES in the cucumber samples. Based on the fluorescence quenching phenomenon, a smartphone application was used to output RGB values of the captured images for the colored solution. The smartphone-based ratiometric sensor could be utilized for the visual fluorescent quantitation of MES by virtue of the R/B values in cucumbers, which gave linear range (1-200 μM) and LOD (0.3 μM). By means of blue-red dual-emission fluorescence, the smartphone-based fluoroprobe provides a cost-effective, portable and reliable avenue for the on-site, rapid and sensitive assay of MES's residues in complex vegetable samples.

Abstract
A straightforward, cost-effective and biocompatible reduction approach was applied to fabricate soluble but non-luminous glutathione-stabilized copper nanocluster (GSH-CuNCs). Surprisingly, as high as 1 × 103 times fluorescence enhancement was acquired when Ce3+ was injected at an extremely low concentration of only 18 µM. Ce3+ outperformed other rare-earth metal ions in terms of inducing fluorescence amplification of the non-luminous GSH-CuNCs. Furthermore, Ce3+ was employed as inducer for aggregation-induce emission (AIE) effect as well as reactant to coordinate with target of 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) due to the stronger coordination ability between Ce3+ and DPA than that of Ce3+ and GSH. As a result, the Ce3+/GSH-CuNCs ensemble was developed as a novel sensor to detect DPA in the "on-off" mode. When DPA was introduced into the sensor, Ce3+ failed to interact with GSH and detached from the surface of GSH-CuNCs, leading to fluorescence quenching. In addition, static quenching process and internal filtration effect (IFE) between Ce3+/GSH-CuNCs and DPA were also responsible for fluorescence quenching effect. A good linear relationship was obtained from 0.3 µM to 18 µM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.19 µM. The as-proposed probe displayed high specificity to DPA and provided a simple, fast rapid and cheap method for construction this type of ensemble sensors to detect other targets.

Abstract
In this paper, polyvinylpyrrolidone-templated copper nanoclusters (PVP-CuNCs) were synthesised using a hydrothermal method. Through the electrostatic interaction between PVP-CuNCs and rhodamine 6G, a dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probe was constructed, and two well-separated emission peaks appeared at 420 nm and 570 nm. The selective detection of rutin and picric acid was achieved by fitting the relationship between the ratiometric fluorescence intensity (F420/F570) and the concentration of the target detection substance. The limits of detection of rutin and picric acid were 0.84 μM and 0.27 μM, respectively. The synthesised material has high stability and successfully allows the determination of rutin content in drugs and picric acid content in water samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract
Highly stable and facile one-pot copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) coated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been synthesized for selectively sensing deferasirox (DFX) in β-thalassemia plasma. DFX is an important drug used for treating iron overloading in β-thalassemia, but needs to be monitored due to certain toxicity. In this study, the PAH-Cu NCs showed highly stable fluorescence with emission wavelengths at 450 nm. The DFX specifically interacted with the copper nanocluster to turn off the fluorescence of the PAH-Cu NCs, and could be selectively quantified through the fluorescence quenching effect. The linear range of DFX in plasma analyzed by PAH-Cu NCs was 1.0-100.0 µg/mL (r = 0.985). The relative standard deviation (RSD) and relative error (RE) were lower than 6.51% and 7.57%, respectively, showing excellent reproducibility of PAH-Cu NCs for sensing DFX in plasma. This method was also successfully applied for an analysis of three clinical plasma samples from β-thalassemia patients taking DFX. The data presented high similarity with that obtained through a capillary electrophoresis method. According to the results, the PAH-Cu NCs could be used as a tool for clinically sensing DFX in human plasma for clinical surveys.

Abstract
In this work, we reported a facile reduction approach for fabrication of water-soluble and ultrabright Cu nanoclusters with core-shell structure. A certain amount of reducing agent as NaBH4was introduced into the polyethyleneimine-stabilized Cu nanoclusters (CuNCs@PEI) system, which exhibited 4-fold fluorescence enhancement along with a blue shift of the emission peak. The variations of morphology, valence states and functional groups demonstrated that a Cu shell was formed surround CuNCs (defined as CuNCs-Cu@PEI), attributable to metal complex (PEI-Cu+and PEI-Cu2+) reduction. The effect of core-shell morphology on luminous and electron relaxation mechanism of CuNCs-Cu@PEI was investigated via temperature-dependent steady and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The CuNCs-Cu@PEI with a high fluorescence quantum yields of 22.59% were able to homogeneously disperse in aqueous phase, indicating their potential applications in biological labeling, sensing and invivoimaging. Finally, the CuNCs-Cu@PEI was employed as a fluorescence probe to determine 4-nitrophenol, of which the detection limit was much lower than initial CuNCs@PEI.

Abstract
α-Glucosidase (α-Glu) and its inhibitors play critical roles in diabetes therapy. Herein, a simple and ultra-sensitive fluorescence sensing approach was fabricated for α-Glu activity monitoring and natural inhibitor screening by electrostatically confining negatively charged glutathione-capped copper nanoclusters (GSH-CuNCs) on exfoliation-free and positively charged 2D boehmite (Boe) nanosheets. Boe significantly improved the fluorescence emission/stability of GSH-CuNCs and simultaneously led to an obvious blue-shift of the excitation peak of CuNCs from 365 nm to 330 nm. As a result, the fluorescence emission of Boe@GSH-CuNCs was efficiently quenched by 4-nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside (PNPG) with a maximum absorbance peak (λmax) at 310 nm via inner filter effect, and sequentially recovered by α-Glu through the hydrolysis of PNPG to p-nitrophenol (λmax = 410 nm). Accordingly, an ultra-sensitive fluorescence assay for the determination of α-Glu activity was proposed by using Boe@GSH-CuNCs as fluorescence probes. The detection limit of 0.43 U/L was achieved, which was lower than most of other α-Glu activity assays. Furthermore, this method was capable of screening α-Glu inhibitors originated from actinomycetes, peanut, sophora flower, celery, and orange as potential anti-diabetes drugs. Taken together, this work provided a promising strategy for clinical treatment of diabetes and discovery of anti-diabetes drugs.

Abstract
Nonconjugated polymer dots (NPDs) were successfully used as fluorescent probes to selectively and sensitively detect picric acid (PA). The NPDs were prepared from polyethylenimine and 1,4-phthalaldehyde under mild conditions and had excitation and emission maxima of 351 and 474 nm, respectively. Fluorescence of the NPDs was efficiently quenched by PA through the inner filter effect because of the overlapping PA absorption band and NPD excitation spectrum. The NPDs allowed PA to be determined with a high degree of sensitivity. The linear range was 0-140μM and the detection limit was 0.5μM. The work involved developing a novel method for synthesizing NPDs and a promising platform for determining PA in environmental media.

Abstract
Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (MNCs) have gained tremendous research interest in recent years due to their extraordinary properties. The molecular-like properties that originate from the quantized electronic states provide novel opportunities for the construction of unique nanomaterials possessing rich molecular-like absorption, luminescence, and magnetic properties. The field of monolayer-protected metal nanoclusters, especially copper, with well-defined molecular structures and compositions, is relatively new, about two to three decades old. Nevertheless, the massive progress in the field illustrates the importance of such nanoobjects as promising materials for various applications. In this respect, nanocluster-based catalysts have become very popular, showing high efficiencies and activities for the catalytic conversion of chemical compounds. Biomedical applications of clusters are an active research field aimed at finding better fluorescent contrast agents, therapeutic pharmaceuticals for the treatment and prevention of diseases, the early diagnosis of cancers and other potent diseases, especially at early stages. A huge library of structures and the compositions of copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) with atomic precisions have already been discovered during last few decades; however, there are many concerns to be addressed and questions to be answered. Hopefully, in future, with the combined efforts of material scientists, inorganic chemists, and computational scientists, a thorough understanding of the unique molecular-like properties of metal nanoclusters will be achieved. This, on the other hand, will allow the interdisciplinary researchers to design novel catalysts, biosensors, or therapeutic agents using highly structured, atomically precise, and stable CuNCs. Thus, we hope this review will guide the reader through the field of CuNCs, while discussing the main achievements and improvements, along with challenges and drawbacks that one needs to face and overcome.

Abstract
Herein, a facile, straightforward and green method was developed to prepare copper nanoclusters by using glutathione (GSH) as the protecting agent and ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. The glutathione-templated copper nanoclusters (GSH-Cu NCs) were characterized through fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fluorescence lifetime analysis. The as-synthesized Cu NCs showed blue fluorescence with a peak centered at 426 nm. The Cu NCs had excellent water solubility, stability and dispersibility. Based on the inner filter effect and static quenching mechanism, Cu NCs were employed to detect furazolidone in bovine serum samples. Under optimal detection conditions, a good linear relationship was observed between F0/F and the furazolidone concentration from 0.05 to 60 μM. The detection limit (LOD) was 0.012 μM. Furthermore, the fluorescence probe was successfully used in the quantification of furazolidone in bovine serum samples. In addition, this analytical method provides a rapid, easy and ultrasensitive fluorescence platform for the detection of furazolidone.

A novel"turn-off"fluorescence assay based on acid-copper nanoclusters in deep eutectic solvent micelles for co-aggregation inducing fluorescence enhancement and its application. Abstract
As mixtures, deep eutectic solvent (DES) is designability. By adjusting the long alkyl chain hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) or hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), the DES displays surfactant characteristics and can form micelles. Hence, a novel, simple, facile and green natural organic acids capped copper nanoclusters (Aci-CuNCs) was synthesized and the spectrum behavior of Aci-CuNCs in DES micelles was researched. It was found that the surfactant-like DES can form micellar co-aggregation with Aci-CuNCs, resulting in the fluorescence (FL) intensive of Aci-CuNCs increase. Corresponding performance of spectral properties of Aci-CuNCs in DES medium were systematically studied by fourier transform infrared spectrometer, 3D FL spectroscopy, FL emission/excitation spectra, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. In the mechanism exploration part, on the one hand, the existence of micellar co-aggregation was confirmed by the conductivity, the mass effect of DES, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. On the other hand, the influence of different kinds of DESs (types of HBAs/HBDs, molar ratio) and some possible factors (ionic strength and temperature) were discussed in detail to investigate the main driving forces for the formation of micellar co-aggregates. The results of mechanism exploration prove that the long alkyl chain of DES is amphiphilic which can form micellar co-aggregation with Aci-CuNCs through hydrogen bonding. The DES micelle provides Aci-CuNCs with a relatively stable and closed micro-environment which can effectively prevent collisions with water molecules and weakening of fluorescence intensity. On the basic of the above research, a "turn-off" fluorimetric method based on Aci-CuNCs in DES medium was applied for the determination of Fe3+. Under the optimum conditions, the assay worked in the Fe3+ concentration ranges from 1 to -20 μM and had a detection limit of 0.0374 μM. Method validation study illustrates the proposed system can provide a good accuracy, repeatability and stability conditions. Furthermore, the real sample analysis result demonstrates that no obvious matrix effect is found. As a consequence, the FL assays (Aci-CuNCs-based DES) composed of natural organic acid capped CuNCs and green solvent DES provides a simple, gentle and environmentally friendly method for the detection of iron ions.

Abstract
Rifampicin is a common antibiotic used in human and veterinary medicine to treat tuberculosis and other diseases caused by numerous pathogenic bacteria. However, the excessive or improper use of rifampicin usually leads to a series of problems, including bacterial resistance, excessive drug-resistance and water pollution. Thus, it is of great importance to develop selective and sensitive assays for monitoring rifampicin in biological systems. In this study, we designed a fluorescence "turn-off" strategy for the trace detection of rifampicin based on a glutathione-stabilized copper nanoclusters (GSH-Cu NC) sensor. In an aqueous solution, the fluorescence of the GSH-Cu NCs at 632 nm can be quenched effectively and selectively by rifampicin due to the inner-filter effect (IFE) of fluorescence mechanism. Distinctively, this GSH-Cu NC sensor exhibited excellent fluorescence sensing capability for the trace detection of rifampicin with a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 16 pM in a wide linear range from 50 to 10 000 pM. It is not only more sensitive than the other methods previously reported for the detection of rifampicin, but also has an outstanding selectivity and strong anti-interference in complex samples. Furthermore, the as-developed GSH-Cu NCs were also successfully applied to determine rifampicin in different real samples with quantitative spike recoveries ranging from 97% to 105%.

Abstract
Thiol compounds exist widely on the Earth and have certain significance in the fields of the circulation of the sulfur element and industrial production. However, the odor and biological toxicity of thiol compounds make them pollutants that seriously threaten the environmental safety and the living quality of human. In this study, a novel triplet induced fluorescence "turn-off" strategy was designed for the detection of thiol pollutants via a glutathione-stabilized copper nanocluster (GSH-Cu NC) probe. The as-prepared GSH-Cu NCs not only have small size and good water-solubility, but also exhibit strong red-emitting fluorescence at 630 nm, which could be quenched quantitatively with the increase of the concentration of thiol pollutants. So they were employed to detect thioglycolic acid (TGA), 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) and 2-(diethylamino)ethanethiol (2-AT) in a wide linear range of 1-100 μM with detection limits of 0.73 μM, 0.43 μM, 0.37 μM, and 0.69 μM, respectively. This method was successfully applied to detect the above thiol pollutants in lake water with good recoveries. Moreover, their further application was also expanded as luminous test strips based on the excellent fluorescence characteristics of GSH-Cu NCs for fast real-time detection of thiol pollutants.

Abstract
In the present work, we report a novel chemical approach for the synthesis of orange-red emitting copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) using L-methionine as stabilizing agent at room temperature for the first time. The synthetic route is facile, economical and viable. The methionine stabilized copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs/Met) were thoroughly characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XPS, UV-Vis, steady state and transient fluorescence spectroscopy. The results show the synthesized Cu NCs/Met with a fluorescence quantum yield of 4.37% possessed high stability and excellent optical features such as large Stokes shift and long fluorescence lifetime (8.3 μs). Significantly, the fluorescence intensity of Cu NCs/Met could be efficiently quenched by norfloxacin (NOR) pharmaceutical. A fast and cost-effective NOR sensor was proposed employing Cu NCs/Met as the fluorescent nanoprobe, and the quenching mechanisms were attributed to inner filter effect and agglomeration-induced quenching. The developed sensor exhibited a high sensitivity and selectivity towards NOR in a wide linear range from 0.05 to 250 μM with a detection limit as low as 17 nM. Moreover, the practicability of the developed NOR sensor for real sample assay was validated with satisfactory recoveries, indicating this sensing platform with great potential for label-free pharmaceutical detection in complex systems.

Abstract
In this work, amino functionalized CdSe-silica core-shell nanoparticles (NH2-CdSe@SiO2 NPs) were constructed as probe to detect picric acid (PA). The CdSe QDs were embedded in SiO2 nanoparticles and modified with amino groups on the surface. The nitro explosives are electron deficient in nature, which will have stronger affinity for amines and resulted in fluorescence quenching of quantum dots. It was proved that this strategy is selective, easy and sensitive enough for sensing PA with a detection limit of 0.5 × 10-7 M.

Abstract
The pollution of heavy metal increases greatly accompanying by the development of industries. So, it is very important to build up a quick and reliable technique for detection of heavy metal ions. In this work, we developed a simple and convenient method for ratiometric and visual detection of Cr2O72- ions and Cd2+ ions. We utilized glutathione as raw material to prepare cyan-emitting carbon dots (GSH@CDs). The GSH@CDs were further used as the template to prepare carbon dots-stabilized copper nanoclusters (GSH@CDs-Cu NCs) that displayed two well-separated emission peaks respectively at 450 nm and 750 nm. The GSH@CDs-Cu NCs can be applied for the ratiometric and visual detection of Cr2O72- and Cd2+ ions based on the fluorescence quenching or enhancement of GSH@CDs-Cu NCs at 750 nm. A linear range of 2-40 μmol L-1 with a detection limit of 0.9 μmol L-1 for Cr2O72- ions, and a linear range of 0-20 μmol L-1 with a detection limit of 0.6 μmol L-1 for Cd2+ ions were achieved based on this method. The fluorescent test strips for Cr2O72- ions were successfully prepared based on GSH@CDs-Cu NCs. Moreover, the GSH@CDs-Cu NCs were successfully applied to determine Cr2O72- and Cd2+ ions in real samples with promising results.

Comparative study of Cl,N-Cdots and N-Cdots and application for trinitrophenol and ClO - sensor and cell-imaging. Anal Chim Acta 2019; 1091:76-87. Abstract
To understand the effect of Cl doping in carbon dots, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-Cdots) and nitrogen and chlorine dual-doped carbon dots (Cl,N-Cdots) were fabricated by high-temperature carbonization and low-temperature concentrated acid (HCl) acidification of dried shaddock peel, respectively. The quantum yield of Cl,N-Cdots is about four times of that of N-Cdots and the size of Cl,N-Cdots is smaller than that of N-Cdots. Furthermore, since trinitrophenol (PA) and ClO- could effectively quench the fluorescence of Cl,N-Cdots, the fluorescence sensors for determining PA and ClO- was constructed, respectively. The linear range of PA and ClO- are 0.9-90 μM and 3.24-216 μM with the limit of detection of 37.1 nM and 2.88 μM, respectively. The proposed sensor was used to detect PA in Taiyuan tap water, Wutai tap water, Wutai rain water and Wutai river water samples with encouraging results. The as-constructed sensor was also used to detect ClO- in Taiyuan tap water and commercial disinfectants. Last but not least, Cl,N-Cdots was employed as an agent for A549 and HeLa cell-imaging, possessing optimal imaging effect and ultra-low cytotoxicity. Our results suggested that Cl,N-Cdots has promising applications in sensing, water monitoring, commodity supervision and cell-imaging.

Abstract
Copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) are an attractive alternative to other metal nanoclusters. The synthesis of CuNCs is highly efficient and fast, with low-cost and without any complicated manipulation. Because of their tunable fluorescence and low toxicity, CuNCs have been highly exploited for biochemical sensing. This review (with 172 refs.) summarizes the progress that has been made in the field in the past years. Following an introduction into the fundamentals of CuNCs, the review first focuses on synthetic methods and the fluorescence properties of CuNCs (with subsections on the use of proteins, peptides, DNA and other molecules as templates). This is followed by a section on the use of CuNCs in fluorometric assays, with subsections on the detection of small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, various other biomolecules including drugs, and of pH values. A further large chapter summarizes the work related to environmental analyses, specifically on determination of metal ions, anions and pollutants. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of the synthesis and potential applications of copper nanocluster (CuNCs) in biochemical analysis, emphatically reflected in some vital areas such as small molecule analysis, biomacromolecule monitoring, cell imaging, ions detection, toxic pollutant, etc.

Abstract
A sensitive and selective graphene oxide (GO)-based fluorescent nanoprobe has been developed for the relay recognition of Cu2+ and cysteine (Cys) by covalently grafting γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) onto GO. The fluorescence of the probe (with excitation/emission maxima at 360/445 nm) is selectively quenched by Cu2+ via static fluorescence quenching. Fluorescence drops linearly as the concentration of Cu2+ is increased from 50 nM to 1.0 µM, and the detection limit for Cu2+ is calculated as 15 nM. By virtue of the strong interaction between Cys and Cu2+, the GO-GABA/Cu2+ complex can further sensitively recognize Cys in a "switch-on" mode. The linear range for Cys detection is from 50 nM to 1.0 µM, and the detection limit is 38 nM. The probe has low cytotoxicity, and it works well inside living cells, which is verified by the successful application in imaging of LLC-PK1 cells. Graphical abstract Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) modified graphene oxide (GO) is a highly selective nanoprobe for the fluorometric relay recognition of Cu2+ and Cys.
