Dual emission nonionic molecular imprinting conjugated polythiophenes-based paper devices and their nanofibers for point-of-care biomarkers detection

A reliable fluorescence "turn-on" aptasensor based on dual-emitting europium metal-organic frameworks for ultrasensitive and selective detection of sulfamethazine

A high-performance fluorescent "turn-on" aptasensor (Eu-MOFs@SMZ-Apt) for sulfamethazine (SMZ) determination was designed using dual-emitting europium metal-organic frameworks (Eu-MOFs) as a signal transducer and an amplifier. Eu-MOFs featuring dual emission peaks (430 nm and 620 nm) were first prepared via a facile self-assembly strategy employing Eu (III) ions and 2-aminoterephthalic acid as precursors. The high-affinity aptamer was bonded with Eu-MOFs to form Eu-MOFs@SMZ-Apt through the amidation reaction. Benefiting from the integration of inherent virtues from Eu-MOFs and aptamer, the Eu-MOFs@SMZ-Apt-based sensor allowed sensitive and selective determination of SMZ with good linear relationships in a range of 1.4-40 ng mL-1 and a low detection line (0.379 ng mL-1). This sensor was successfully applied to the determination of trace SMZ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries (86.47-113.52%) and a relative standard deviation (<6.51). Consequently, the Eu-MOFs@SMZ-Apt ratiometric fluorescence sensor furnishes new possibilities for the accurate detection of various pollutants in food.

Highly sensitive plasmonic paper substrate fabricated via amphiphilic polymer self-assembly in microdroplet for detection of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants

We report an innovative and facile approach to fabricating an ultrasensitive plasmonic paper substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The approach exploits the self-assembling capability of poly(styrene-b-2-vinyl pyridine) block copolymers to form a thin film at the air-liquid interface within the single microdroplet scale for the first time and the subsequent in situ growth of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The concentration of the block copolymer was found to play an essential role in stabilizing the droplets during the mass transfer phase and formation of silver nanoparticles, thus influencing the SERS signals. SEM analysis of the morphology of the plasmonic paper substrates revealed the formation of spherical AgNPs evenly distributed across the surface of the formed copolymer film with a size distribution of 47.5 nm. The resultant enhancement factor was calculated to be 1.2 × 107, and the detection limit of rhodamine 6G was as low as 48.9 pM. The nanohybridized plasmonic paper was successfully applied to detect two emerging pollutants-sildenafil and flibanserin-with LODs as low as 1.48 nM and 3.45 nM, respectively. Thus, this study offers new prospects for designing an affordable and readily available, yet highly sensitive, paper-based SERS substrate with the potential for development as a lab-on-a-chip device.

Disease diagnosis and application analysis of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in saliva detection

Saliva has significantly evolved as a diagnostic fluid in recent years, giving a non-invasive alternative to blood analysis. A high protein concentration in saliva is delivered directly from the bloodstream, making it a "human mirror" that reflects the body's physiological state. It plays an essential role in detecting diseases in biomedical and fitness monitoring. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are biomimetic materials with custom-designed synthetic recognition sites that imitate biological counterparts renowned for sensitive analyte detection. This paper reviews the progress made in research about MIP biosensors for detecting saliva biomarkers. Specifically, we investigate the link between saliva biomarkers and various diseases, providing detailed insights into the corresponding biosensors. Furthermore, we discuss the principles of molecular imprinting for disease diagnostics and application analysis, including recent advances in integrated MIP-sensor technologies for high-affinity analyte detection in saliva. Notably, these biosensors exhibit high discrimination, allowing for the detection of saliva biomarkers linked explicitly to chronic stress disorders, diabetes, cancer, bacterial or viral-induced illnesses, and exposure to illicit toxic substances or tobacco smoke. Our findings indicate that MIP-based biosensors match and perhaps surpass their counterparts featuring integrated natural antibodies in terms of stability, signal-to-noise ratios, and detection limits. Additionally, we highlight the design of MIP coatings, strategies for synthesizing polymers, and the integration of advanced biodevices. These tailored biodevices, designed to assess various salivary biomarkers, are emerging as promising screening or diagnostic tools for real-time monitoring and self-health management, improving quality of life.

Novel molecularly imprinted nanogel modified microfluidic paper-based SERS substrate for simultaneous detection of bisphenol A and bisphenol S traces in plastics

Paper-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) optical nanoprobes provide ultrasensitive analyte detection; however, they lack selectivity, making them difficult to use in real-world sample analysis without a pretreatment process. This work describes the design of a microfluidic paper-based SERS substrate based on molecularly imprinted nanogels decorated with silver nanoparticles to simultaneously detect bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) traces in plastic toys and receipts. The synthesized nanogels have two characteristics that boost SERS performance: molecularly imprinted cavities that allow for selective adsorption and a wrinkled surface that creates uniformly distributed hot spots. Simple paper-based sensor devices were built as 'drop and read' SERS substrates with a separate reservoir to detect a single target, while advanced SERS platforms were designed as a microfluidic chip with two reservoirs connected by a channel for simultaneous detection of BPA and BPS. The SERS platform with a single reservoir showed outstanding analytical performance for the detection of BPA and BPS, with low detection limits of 0.38 pM and 0.37 pM, respectively. The microfluidic paper-based sensor allowed simultaneous and selective detection of BPA and BPS with detection limits estimated at 0.68 nM and 0.47 nM, respectively. The developed sensors are successfully applied to detect BPA and BPS in plastic products and receipts. Finally, the results obtained with our method showed greater sensitivity than those of commercially available ELISA kits, and the acquired values within the ELISA detection range were in excellent agreement.

Multifunctional Electrospun Nanofibers for Biosensing and Biomedical Engineering Applications

Nanotechnology is experiencing unprecedented developments, leading to the advancement of functional nanomaterials. The properties that stand out include remarkable porosity, high-specific surface area, excellent loading capacity, easy modification, and low cost make electrospun nanofibers. In the biomedical field, especially in biosensors, they exhibit amazing potential. This review introduces the principle of electrospinning, describes several structures and biomaterials of electrospun nanofibers used for biomedicine, and summarizes the applications of this technology in biosensors and other biomedical applications. In addition, the technical challenges and limitations of electrospinning for biomedicine are discussed; however, more research work is needed to elucidate its full potential.

A Smartphone-Integrated Molecularly Imprinted Fluorescence Sensor for Visual Detection of Chlortetracycline Based on N,P-Codoped Carbon Dots Decorated Iron-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The residue of chlortetracycline is potentially hazardous to human health; it is meaningful to exploit a portable, rapid, sensitive, and selective method for detection of chlortetracycline (CTC). In this study, a novel fluorescence bionic sensing probe (NH2-MIL-53&N,P-CDs@MIP) was successfully prepared based on the nitrogen and phosphorus codoped carbon dots decorated iron-based metal-organic frameworks combining with molecular imprinted polymer for the detection of CTC. A fluorescence intensity-responsive "on-off" detection of CTC on account of the inner-filter effect (IFE) was achieved by NH2-MIL-53&N,P-CDs@MIP. Under the optimal conditions, the fluorescence quenching degree of NH2-MIL-53&N,P-CDs@MIP presented a good linear relationship with the CTC concentration in the range 0.06-30 μg mL-1 and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.019 μg mL-1. The fluorescent probe was applied to detect CTC in milk samples, and experimental results showed a good recovery rate (88.73%-96.28%). Additionally, a smartphone-integrated fluorescence sensing device based on NH2-MIL-53&N,P-CDs@MIP was exploited to replace the expensive and bulky fluorescence spectrophotometer for quantitative determination of CTC with the LOD of 0.033 μg mL-1. The sensing system showed high selectivity, strong stability, high specificity, and portability, which provide a great strategy for the quantitative detection of antibiotic residue.

Fluorescence Naphthalene Cationic Schiff Base Reusable Paper as a Sensitive and Selective for Heavy Metals Cations Sensor: RSM, Optimization, and DFT Modelling

Heavy metals are particularly damaging contaminants in the environment, and even trace concentrations represent a risk to human health due to their toxicity. To detect the heavy metals of Mn2+ and Co2+ ions, a novel selective reusable paper-based Fluorescence naked-eye sensor based on naphthalene cationic Schiff base (NCSB) was synthesized and confirmed using FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, and MS tools. Based on a blue to colorless color change in the aqueous solution, the NCSB sensor is utilized to Mn2+ and Co2+ cations selectively among other metal ions (Fe2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, Sn2+ and Cr3+). In the aqueous medium, the NCSB sensor displayed high sensitivity, with limits of detection (LOD) values of 0.014 µM (14.08 nM) and 0.041 µM (41.47 nM) for Mn2+ and Co2+ cations, respectively. The paper-based sensor naked-eye detected Mn2+ and Co2+ cations in water at concentrations as low as 0.65 µM (65 nM) and 0.086 µM (86 nM), respectively. It was discovered that 5 min of incubation time and a pH range of 7 to 11 were optimal for the complexation reaction between the Mn2+ and Co2+ ions and the NCSB sensor. Through a static quenching process, the interaction of the different metal ions with the Schiff base group in the NCSB molecule results in the development of a ground-state non-fluorescent complex. NCSB sensor was also successfully applied in analysis of Mn2+ and Co2+ in environmental water with good recoveries of 94.8-105.9%. The theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) studies are in support of experimental interpretations. The links between the input factors and the anticipated response were evaluated using the quadratic model of the response surface methodology (RSM) modeling.

Sensitive and selective detection of p-nitroaniline with the assistance of a fluorescence capillary imprinted sensor

A fluorescence capillary imprinted sensor was first prepared with high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of p-nitroaniline. The fluorescence imprinted polymer prepared by the sol-gel method using blue CdTe quantum dots as the fluorescence source was self-sucked into an activated capillary to form the fluorescence imprinted capillary (CdTe@FMIP-CA) sensor. The specificity and selectivity tests showed that the CdTe@FMIP-CA sensor has a high selective recognition ability toward p-nitroaniline. The CdTe@FMIP-CA sensor can quickly and specifically recognize p-nitroaniline within 2 min with a high specific fluorescence response efficiency. The fluorescence intensity of the CdTe@FMIP-CA sensor remained stable within 60 min. A good linear relationship was established between the fluorescence quenching efficiency of the CdTe@FMIP-CA sensor with a p-nitroaniline concentration range of 0.2-100 μmol L-1 with the detection limit of 4.6 nmol L-1 and the quantitation limit of 0.2 μmol L-1. The imprinting factor was calculated as 3.88. The method has been successfully applied for the determination of trace p-nitroaniline in lake water, tap water, urine, and serum samples. The CdTe@FMIP-CA sensor realized the sensitive and selective detection of p-nitroaniline with the lower consumption of microvolume reagent (18 μL per time), which provided a novel strategy for highly sensitive analysis of microvolume trace pollutants.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Biomimetic Systems for Sensing Environmental Contaminants, Biomarkers, and Bioimaging Applications

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), a biomimetic artificial receptor system inspired by the human body's antibody-antigen reactions, have gained significant attraction in the area of sensor development applications, especially in the areas of medical, pharmaceutical, food quality control, and the environment. MIPs are found to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of typical optical and electrochemical sensors severalfold with their precise binding to the analytes of choice. In this review, different polymerization chemistries, strategies used in the synthesis of MIPs, and various factors influencing the imprinting parameters to achieve high-performing MIPs are explained in depth. This review also highlights the recent developments in the field, such as MIP-based nanocomposites through nanoscale imprinting, MIP-based thin layers through surface imprinting, and other latest advancements in the sensor field. Furthermore, the role of MIPs in enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of sensors, especially optical and electrochemical sensors, is elaborated. In the later part of the review, applications of MIP-based optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of biomarkers, enzymes, bacteria, viruses, and various emerging micropollutants like pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, and heavy metal ions are discussed in detail. Finally, MIP's role in bioimaging applications is elucidated with a critical assessment of the future research directions for MIP-based biomimetic systems.

A portable colorimetric point-of-care testing platform for MicroRNA detection based on programmable entropy-driven dynamic DNA network modulated DNA-gold nanoparticle hybrid hydrogel film

Point-of-care testing (POCT) platforms for microRNA (miRNA) detection have attracted considerable attention in recent years, due to the increasingly important role of miRNA as biomarkers for the diagnosis of many diseases, such as cancers. However, several limitations such as the requirement of enzyme-related amplification system, expensive preservation cost, sophisticated analysis instruments and tedious operations of conventional miRNA biosensing devices severely hinder their widespread applications. In this work, a portable and smart colorimetric analysis platform was developed by employing the ultrathin DNA-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) hybrid hydrogel film as the signaling unit and the enzyme-free entropy-driven dynamic DNA network (EDN) as the signal converter and amplification unit. By programming the DNA sequences of the EDN, the EDN could respond to a specific miRNA, with miRNA-155 or miRNA-21 as the model target, and release a converter DNA with amplified concentration to further trigger the release of AuNPs from the hydrogel film as a colorimetric signal output. To avoid the use of sophisticated spectral instruments, digital analysis based on primary three-color channel (R/G/B) was further introduced by using user-friendly camera and image processing software, and a detection limit at pM level was achieved. Moreover, by introducing H₂O₂-mediated AuNPs enlargement procedure in the colorimetric analysis platform, the detection limit for miRNA target could further be enhanced to fM level. The POCT platform is also portable and storable with a good storage stability for at least 45 days, suggesting its great potential in practical diagnosis applications.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Luminescent Chemosensors

Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based luminescent chemosensors combine the advantages of the highly specific molecular recognition of the imprinting sites and the high sensitivity with the luminescence detection. These advantages have drawn great attention during the past two decades. Luminescent molecularly imprinted polymers (luminescent MIPs) towards different targeted analytes are constructed with different strategies, such as the incorporation of luminescent functional monomers, physical entrapment, covalent attachment of luminescent signaling elements on the MIPs, and surface-imprinting polymerization on the luminescent nanomaterials. In this review, we will discuss the design strategies and sensing approaches of luminescent MIP-based chemosensors, as well as their selected applications in biosensing, bioimaging, food safety, and clinical diagnosis. The limitations and prospects for the future development of MIP-based luminescent chemosensors will also be discussed.

A smartphone-assisted optosensing platform based on chromium-based metal-organic framework signal amplification for ultrasensitive and real-time determination of oxytetracycline

Ultrasensitive and onsite detection of oxytetracycline (OTC) is of vital significance for ensuring public health. Herein, a novel and versatile fluorescence biomimetic nanosensor, Mg,N-CDs@MIL-101@MIP, was elaborately tailored for the assay of OTC. MIL-101 with extraordinarily high surface area and porosity, as a favorable supporter, suppressed self-quenching of Mg,N-CDs and boosted mass transfer rate, realizing signal amplification. As an ultrasensitive signal transducer, high luminescent Mg,N-CDs yielded conspicuous fluorescence responses for OTC, enhancing the sensitivity of Mg,N-CDs@MIL-101@MIP. High-affinity imprinting sites further endowed Mg,N-CDs@MIL-101@MIP with superior anti-interference ability and reusability. Given prominent merits, Mg,N-CDs@MIL-101@MIP demonstrated a good linear range (0.05-40 μg mL^-1) with a lower limit of detection (16.8 ng mL^-1), supplying high accessibility to realize ultrasensitive and highly selective measurement of OTC in samples. Additionally, to attain precise onsite profiling of OTC, an intelligent sensing platform was developed by integrating Mg,N-CDs@MIL-101@MIP with a portable smartphone-assisted optical device. As both signal reader and analyzer, smartphone can instantly capture concentration-dependent fluorescent images and accurately digitize them, accomplishing quantitative analysis of OTC. More delightfully, the portable platform was utilized for visual determination of OTC in milk samples with satisfactory results, offering a promising tool for the high-performance onsite evaluation of food safety and environmental health.

Development and application of tricolor ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on molecularly imprinted nanoparticles for visual detection of dibutyl phthalate in seawater and fish samples

A tricolor ratiometric fluorescence sensor was fabricated by mixing blue- and red-emission molecularly imprinted quantum dots (MIP-QDs) with green-emission quantum dots at the optimal ratio. The MIP-QDs were synthesized by coating CdSe/ZnS QDs in polymer by inverse microemulsion method. Compared with single-emission or dual-emission sensors, the tricolor ratiometric fluorescence sensor provided a wider range of color variations for visual DBP detection. The ratio fluorescence value I₅₃₀/(I₄₅₀ + I₆₃₀) of the tricolor ratiometric fluorescence sensor linearly changed within the concentration of 2.0-20.0 × 10³ μg/L DBP. The correlation coefficient was 0.9910, and the limits of detection were 1.0 μg/kg and 0.65 μg/L in fish and seawater, respectively. Meanwhile, the fluorescence color gradually changed from purple to plum to pink to salmon to yellowish green and finally to green. The recoveries of DBP in fish and seawater were 84.3 %-91.4 % and 88.3 %-110.3 %, respectively. Moreover, no obvious differences were observed between the detection results of the tricolor ratiometric fluorescence sensor and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The tricolor ratiometric fluorescence sensor constructed herein provides an ideal choice for rapid and intuitive DBP detection in environmental and aquatic products.

Molecularly Imprinted Ratiometric Fluorescence Nanosensors

Molecularly imprinted ratiometric fluorescence (MIR-FL) nanosensors feature recognition selectivity, detection sensitivity, application universality, visualization accuracy, and device portability, and have gained popularity. However, the fluorescence intensity, nanostructure, color range, and practical application of the sensor still face severe difficulties to be solved. New strategies combined with various technologies have been developed to construct MIR-FL nanosensors for expanded applications. This Perspective highlights current resarch challenges and future prospects involving constructions and applications of MIR-FL nanosensors including dual-emission and triple-emission modes. The postimprinting mixing/modification strategies, microdevices, and multitarget detection are focused, and technology synergy, sensitivity/reproducibility improvement, application diversity/portability, etc. are proposed.

Paper-Based Molecular-Imprinting Technology and Its Application

Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) are highly effective tools due to their low cost, portability, low reagent accumulation, and ease of use. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) are also extensively used as biomimetic receptors and specific adsorption materials for capturing target analytes in various complex matrices due to their excellent recognition ability and structural stability. The integration of MIP and PADs (MIP-PADs) realizes the rapid, convenient, and low-cost application of molecular-imprinting analysis technology. This review introduces the characteristics of MIP-PAD technology and discusses its application in the fields of on-site environmental analysis, food-safety monitoring, point-of-care detection, biomarker detection, and exposure assessment. The problems and future development of MIP-PAD technology in practical application are also prospected.

Improving the Sensitivity of Nanofibrous Membrane-Based ELISA for On-Site Antibiotics Detection

An ultrasensitive and portable colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) sensor for antibiotics was fabricated by immobilizing antibodies inside the largely porous and highly hydrophilic nanofibrous membranes. Different from regular electrospun nanofibrous membranes where antibodies may frequently be blocked by the heterogeneous porous structure and sterically crowded loaded on the surface, the controlled microporous structure and increased hydrophilicity of nanofibrous membranes could improve the diffusion properties of antibodies, reduce the sterically crowding effect, and dramatically improve the sensitivity of the membrane-based ELISA. The limitation of detection (LOD) for chloramphenicol (CAP) reached 0.005 ng/mL, around 200 times lower than the conventional paper-based ELISA, making quantitative analysis and portable on-site detection achievable via the use of smartphones. The successful design and fabrication of the nanofibrous membrane-based ELISA with novel features overcome the structural drawbacks of regular electrospun nanofibrous membranes and provide new paths to develop highly sensitive on-site detection of hazardous chemical agents.

Nanomaterials for IoT Sensing Platforms and Point-of-Care Applications in South Korea

Herein, state-of-the-art research advances in South Korea regarding the development of chemical sensing materials and fully integrated Internet of Things (IoT) sensing platforms were comprehensively reviewed for verifying the applicability of such sensing systems in point-of-care testing (POCT). Various organic/inorganic nanomaterials were synthesized and characterized to understand their fundamental chemical sensing mechanisms upon exposure to target analytes. Moreover, the applicability of nanomaterials integrated with IoT-based signal transducers for the real-time and on-site analysis of chemical species was verified. In this review, we focused on the development of noble nanostructures and signal transduction techniques for use in IoT sensing platforms, and based on their applications, such systems were classified into gas sensors, ion sensors, and biosensors. A future perspective for the development of chemical sensors was discussed for application to next-generation POCT systems that facilitate rapid and multiplexed screening of various analytes.

Improved detection and recognition of glycoproteins using fluorescent polymers with a molecular imprint based on glycopeptides

Highly specific novel glycopeptide-based fluorescent molecularly imprinting polymers (g-FMIPs) were constructed to recognize and determine the target glycoprotein in complex biological samples. The glycopeptide of ovalbumin (OVA), with the unique structural characteristics of glycan and peptide, and potential application in improving the specificity recognition of g-FMIPs, was selected as the template molecule. The nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were introduced for fluorescence response. The obtained g-FMIPs possessed rapid binding kinetics and high adsorption capacity. Notably, the g-FMIPs exhibited remarkable selectivity and sensitivity with a high imprinting factor of 6.57, good linearity of 0.625 - 5.00 μM, and limit of detection of 0.208 μM. After treatment with g-FMIPs, the concentration of OVA in eluted solution was 1.07 μM. The obtained recoveries at 1.43 μM, 2.86 μM, and 4.29 μM spiked concentrations were 97.2%, 93.5%, and 101%, respectively, and the relative standard deviations were 2.6%, 4.2%, and 1.1%, respectively. In summary, the proposed strategy will expand the MIPs construction method and its application prospects in precision recognition and sensitive detection of trace glycoproteins from complex biosamples.

Cobalt-Iron Double Ion-Bovine Serum Albumin Chelation-Assisted Thermo-Sensitive Surface-Imprinted Nanocage with High Specificity

To develop multifunctional protein imprinted materials, a cobalt-iron double ion-BSA directional chelation-assisted thermo-sensitive surface-imprinted hollow nanocage (Co-Fe@CBMA-MIPs) with excellent specificity is developed on the surface of ZIF-67@Co-Fe in this study by synergizing the advantages of surface imprinting, metal ion chelation, anti-protein adsorption segments, and thermo-sensitive components. Beyond previous research, well-designed multifunctional protein-imprinted materials possess high binding capacity, fast adsorption kinetics, and outstanding selectivity. When the adsorption is carried out at 32 °C, the adsorption capacity of Co-Fe@CBMA-MIPs for BSA reaches 520.35 mg/g within 50 min. The imprinting factor is 8.55. The selectivity factors of Co-Fe@CBMA-MIPs for HSA, Bhb, OVA, and Lyz are 3.72, 6.09, 4.10, and 8.41, respectively. More significantly, Co-Fe@CBMA-MIPs could specifically recognize BSA from mixed proteins and actual samples and exhibit excellent repeated use stability. Based on the above advantages, the development of this research provides an effective means to improve the recognition specificity of molecularly imprinted polymers.

Selective dual detection of Hg2+ and TATP based on amphiphilic conjugated polythiophene-quantum dot hybrid materials

The design of multifunctional sensors based on biocompatible hybrid materials consisting of conjugated polythiophene-quantum dots for multiple environmental pollutants is a promising strategy for the development of new monitoring technologies. Herein, we present a new approach for the "on-off-on" sensing of Hg²⁺ and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) based on amphiphilic polythiophene-coated CdTe QDs (PQDs, PLQY ∼78%). The emission of the PQDs is quenched by Hg²⁺ ions via electron transfer interactions. Based on the strong interaction between TATP and Hg²⁺ ions, the addition of TATP to the PQD-Hg²⁺ complex results in a remarkable recovery of the PQD emission. Under the optimized conditions, the PQD sensor shows a good linear response to Hg²⁺ and TATP with detection limits of 7.4 nM and 0.055 mg L^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the "on-off-on" sensor demonstrates good biocompatibility, high stability, and excellent selectivity in the presence of other metal ions and common explosives. Importantly, the proposed method can be used to determine the level of Hg²⁺ and TATP in environmental water samples.

Excellent Fire Retardant Properties of CNF/VMT Based LBL Coatings Deposited on Polypropylene and Wood-Ply

In this report, layer by layer (LBL) fire retardant coatings were produced on wood ply and Polypropylene Homopolymer/Flax fiber composites. FE-SEM and EDAX analysis was carried out to analyze the surface morphology, thickness, growth rate and elemental composition of the samples. Coatings with a high degree of uniformity were formed on Polypropylene composite (PP/flax), while coatings with highest thickness were obtained on wood ply (wood). FTIR and Raman spectroscopy were further used for the molecular identifications of the coatings, which confirmed the maximum deposition of the solution components on the wood substrate. A physiochemical analysis and model was proposed to explain the forces of adhesion between the substrate and solution molecules. Fire protection and thermal properties were studied using TGA and UL-94 tests. It was explored, that the degradation of the coated substrates was highly protected by the coatings as follows: wood > PP/flax > PP. From the UL-94 test, it was further discovered that more than 83% of the coated wood substrate was protected from burning, compared to the 0% of the uncoated substrate. The flammability resistance of the samples was ranked as wood > PP/flax > PP.

Novel “turn on–off” paper sensor based on nonionic conjugated polythiophene-coated CdTe QDs for efficient visual detection of cholinesterase activity

A novel conjugated polythiophene (CP) compound was successfully combined with CdTe quantum dots to improve their selectivity and sensitivity for the efficient visual detection of AChE activity via the color variation of CdTe/CP.
