Abstract
Of the 4.4 million people diagnosed with cancer in Europe each year, around 36 % are of working age. Return-to-work rates vary across Europe. Work is important for the individual, as well as for society, and this review aims to provide an overview of the predictors for the return to work (RTW) process in European cancer survivors of working age. A systematic literature search was conducted. The present review included quantitative and qualitative study designs published since 2013. In total, the review included 85 papers examining cancer survivors with various cancer diagnoses in 18 European countries. Identified predictive factors for RTW related to the social system, treatment, disease, health behavior, the individuals' psychosocial, work, and sociodemographic situations. There is a need for a standardized definition and operationalization of RTW. Providers can use these results to identify survivors at risk and support cancer survivors in their RTW process.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study assessed sustainable return to work (SRTW) of breast cancer survivors (BCS). METHODS We used data from the prospective French cohort, CANTO. We included 1811 stage I-III BCS who were <57 years old and employed at the moment of diagnosis and working 2 years after diagnosis. Using logistic regression, we investigated the role of clinical, health and socio-economic factors, and the work environment on SRTW 3 years after diagnosis. We compared having any sick leave with having worked continuously and being unemployed to having worked continuously between 2 and 3 years after diagnosis. RESULTS Overall, 77% (n = 1395) worked continuously after return to work (RTW). Out of the other 416 BCS, 66% had any sick leave period, 33% had been unemployed, 4% had an early retirement, 2% a disability and 1% another status (multiple situations possible). Being on sick leave was associated with age > 50 (OR = 0.59; 95%CI = 0.43-0.82), stage III (2.56; 1.70-3.85), tumour subtype HR+/HER2+ (0.61; 0.39-0.95), severe fatigue (1.45; 1.06-1.98), workplace accommodations (1.63; 1.14-2.33) and life priorities (0.71; 0.53-0.95). Unemployment was associated with age > 50 (0.45; 0.29-0.72), working in the public sector (0.31; 0.19-0.51), for a small company (3.00; 1.74-5.20) and having a fixed-term contract (7.50; 4.74-11.86). CONCLUSIONS A high number of BCS have periods of sick leave or unemployment after RTW. The determinants differ between sick leave and unemployment. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS BCS need to be supported even after RTW, which should be regarded as a process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is associated with adverse work-related outcomes in women living with a history of primary breast cancer. We explored the perceived impact of receiving adaptive cognitive training (dual n-back training) or active control training (dual 1-back training) on CRCI. Furthermore, we explored the perceived transfer effects of cognitive training on work-related self-management methods for cognitive impairment and work-related outcomes such as career development. DESIGN Longitudinal qualitative study. METHODS A 'framework' analysis approach was used to analyse semi-structured telephone interviews completed by women with a history of primary breast cancer before training (N = 40), one month (N = 30) and six months (N = 29) post-training. RESULTS Four main themes were identified: (1) impact of cognitive impairment at work, (2) perceived impact of cognitive training on impaired cognitive function, (3) perceived effects of training on work-related self-management methods for cognitive impairment and (4) perceived impact on women's career development and progression. Compared to baseline, women who received adaptive dual n-back training reported sustained improvement in multiple cognitive domains including memory and attention up to six months post-training when the follow-up interviews were conducted. Perceived improvements in cognitive function were associated with greater self-confidence and better emotional well-being in work. These improvements were found to lower dependency on self-management methods for cognitive impairment and enhance effectiveness as well as prompt career development or progression for many women. Although some findings of a similar nature were reported in the active control dual 1-back training group the perceived effects were more pronounced and consistent in the dual n-back group. CONCLUSIONS Adaptive cognitive training (dual n-back training) improves perceived CRCI experienced by women in the workplace, enhancing their self-confidence and general emotional well-being. These perceived improvements, in turn, can decrease reliance on self-management methods for cognitive impairment and improve work efficiency and contribute to career development and progression.

Abstract
Several studies have identified the main barriers and facilitators that breast cancer survivors experience in the return to work (RTW). The authors conducted a qualitative study using focus group discussions with a group of female non-metastatic breast cancer survivors (n = 6), a group of health professionals from different medical specialties (n = 8), and a third group of company managers mainly composed of human resources managers (n = 7). The study was carried out between March and December 2021 in Zaragoza (Spain). Transcripts were analyzed using inductive content analysis to identify work-related barriers and facilitators and coded by the research team. Barriers identified included physical and cognitive symptoms, psychosocial problems, lack of knowledge and coordination (health professional, patients, and managers), legal vacuum, physical change, time constraints, work characteristics (lower skilled jobs), unsupportive supervisors and coworkers, family problems and self-demand. Facilitators included family and work support, physical activity and rehabilitation, personalized attention, interdisciplinary collaboration, legal advice for workers, knowledge about breast cancer in companies, positive aspects of work, elaboration of protocols for RTW in women with breast cancer. RTW in working women with breast cancer requires a personalized and holistic view that includes the perspectives of patients, healthcare professionals and company managers.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess temporal trends in disability benefits for breast cancer awarded to women by Brazil’s National Social Security Institute. We conducted a time-series analysis of disability benefit incidence rates between 2007 and 2018 using joinpoint regression and data from the Unified Benefits Information System (SUIBE) and open access social security system database. The age-adjusted incidence rate increased by 6.7% per year between 2015 and 2018 after a period of stability between 2007 and 2014. The number of benefits granted to women aged 20-49 increased, on average, by 3.4% per year, showing a marked rise from 2015 to 2018 (10.4% per year). The findings highlight that breast cancer is an important cause of sick leave among female workers and that the incidence of the disease is growing in younger economically active women, reinforcing the importance of early referral to the Social Security Professional Rehabilitation Program to help workers return to work and readapt to working life.

Abstract
BackgroundWe assessed the prevalence of self-reported perceived discrimination in the workplace after the end of treatment among breast cancer (BC) survivors and studied its association with social, health-related and work-related factors.MethodsWe used data from a French prospective cohort (CANcer TOxicities) including women diagnosed with stage I–III BC. Our analysis included 2130 women who were employed, <57 years old at BC diagnosis and were working 2 years afterwards. We assessed the association between social, health-related and work-related factors and perceived discrimination in the workplace using logistic regression models.ResultsOverall, 26% of women reported perceived discrimination in the workplace after the end of treatment. Women working for a small company, in the public sector or with better overall health status were less likely to report perceived discrimination. Women who benefited from easing dispositions at their workplace, who did not feel supported by their colleagues and those who returned to work because of fear of job loss were more likely to report perceived discrimination.ConclusionsOne in four BC survivors perceives discrimination in the workplace. Health and work-related factors are associated with increased likelihood of reporting perceived discrimination.Trial registration numberNCT01993498.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and predictors of sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) in women with metastatic breast cancer (mBC). METHODS Data were obtained from Swedish registers concerning 1,240 adult women diagnosed 1997-2011 with mBC, from 1 year before (y-1) to 2 (y1) and 2 (y2) years after diagnosis. SA and DP prevalence was calculated. Odds ratios (AOR) were determined for factors associated with using long-term (SA > 180 days or DP > 0 days) sickness benefits. RESULTS Prevalence of SA and DP was 56.0% and 24.8% during y-1, 69.9% and 28.9% during y1, and 64.0% and 34.7% during y2, respectively. Odds of using long-term sickness benefits were higher y1 and y2 in patients using long-term sickness benefits the year before diagnosis (AOR = 3.82, 95% CI 2.91-5.02; AOR = 4.31, 95% CI 2.96-6.29, respectively) and y2 in patients with mBC diagnosis 1997-2000 (AOR = 1.84, 95% CI 1.10-3.08) and using long-term sickness benefits the year after diagnosis (AOR = 22.10, 95% CI 14.33-34.22). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of sickness benefit utilisation was high and increased after mBC diagnosis, particularly for patients using long-term sickness benefits prior to diagnosis. Additional study is needed to determine factors that might reduce the need for sickness benefits and enhance work ability in these patients.

Abstract
Purpose To examine the influence of type of oncological treatment on sick leave in women of working age with early-stage breast cancer. Methods We identified 8870 women aged 30–64 diagnosed with stage I–II breast cancer between 2005 and 2012 in the Breast Cancer Data Base Sweden. Associations between type of oncological treatment (radiotherapy, endocrine therapy, and chemotherapy) and sick leave were estimated by hazard ratios, probabilities, and length of sick leave using multi-state survival analysis. Results During the first 5 years after diagnosis, women aged 50–54 years at diagnosis receiving chemotherapy spent on average 182 (95% CI 151–218) additional days on sick leave compared with women not receiving chemotherapy, but with otherwise similar characteristics. Correspondingly, women initiating endocrine therapy spent 30 (95% CI 18–44) additional days on sick leave and women receiving post-mastectomy radiotherapy 53 (95% CI 37–69) additional days. At year five, the rate of sick leave was increased in women who had received chemotherapy (HR 1.19, 95% CI 1.11–1.28) or endocrine therapy (HR 1.15, 95% CI 1.05–1.26). Chemotherapy and endocrine therapy were associated with increased rates of sick leave due to depression or anxiety. Conclusion Our findings of increased long-term risks of sick leave after oncological treatment for breast cancer warrant attention from caregivers taking part in cancer rehabilitation. In light of the ongoing debate about overtreatment of early-stage breast cancer, our findings point to the importance of properly selecting patients for chemotherapy not only for the medical toxicity but also the possible impact on their livelihood. Abstract
BACKGROUND After breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, work incapacity often occurs among working-age women. We investigated the trajectories of previous and subsequent sickness absence and/or disability pension (SA/DP) days, and risk factors for consistently high levels of future SA/DP among these women. METHODS This longitudinal cohort study included all 3536 women in Sweden aged 19-64 years who received a first BC diagnosis in 2010. Their annual SA/DP net days from 2 years before to 3 years after diagnosis were calculated. SA/DP patterns were depicted by a group-based trajectory model. Logistic regressions were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs of >90 or >180 SA/DP days/year. RESULTS Three trajectories of SA/DP days/year were identified: increasing only in year+1 (61% of all), increasing then decreasing in year+3 (30%), and constantly very high (9%). The risk factors associated with annual SA/DP days >90 (long) and >180 days (extreme long) were similar. Factors associated with having >90 SA/DP days for years 1-3 were: stage II (OR, 4.59; 95% CI, 2.98-7.07), stage III+IV (OR, 26.57; 95% CI, 13.52-52.22), prediagnosis SA 1-30 days (OR, 2.73; 95% CI, 1.30-5.70), prediagnosis SA >90 days (OR, 24.52; 95% CI, 12.25-49.08), and prediagnosis DP (OR, 659.97; 95% CI, 292.52->999.99). Conversely, adjusting for prediagnosis SA/DP and stage, sociodemographic factors were not associated with high levels of SA/DP. CONCLUSION After BC diagnosis, SA/DP increased significantly but then decreased. The absolute majority had no SA/DP during year 3. Advanced cancer stage and previous high SA/DP rendered the greatest risk for future high SA/DP. More knowledge is needed for applying the information in rehabilitation and return-to-work planning.
