Abstract
Sporisorium reilianum is an important biotrophic pathogen that causes head smut disease. Polysaccharides extracted from diseased sorghum heads by Sporisorium reilianum exhibit significant medicinal and edible value. However, the structure and biological activities of these novel polysaccharides have not been explored. In this study, a novel polysaccharide (WM-NP'-60) was isolated and purified from the fruit bodies of S. reilianum and aimed to explore the structural characteristics and substantial antioxidant and antitumor properties of WM-NP'-60. Monosaccharide composition determination, periodate oxidation-Smith degradation, 1D/2D-NMR analysis, and methylation analysis revealed that WM-NP'-60 consisted mainly of β-1,6-D-Glcp, β-1,3-D-Glcp, and β-1,3,6-D-Glcp linkages. The antioxidant assays demonstrated that WM-NP'-60 exhibited great activities, including scavenging free radicals, chelating ferrous ions, and eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS) within cells. The HepG2, SGC7901, and HCT116 cells examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed typical apoptotic bodies. Therefore, a novel fungal polysaccharide (WM-NP'-60) was discovered, extracted, and purified in this experiment, with the aim of providing a reference for the development of a new generation of food and nutraceutical products suitable for human consumption.

Abstract
Arabinoxylans (AX) have become a focal point in the pharmaceutical sector owing to their physicochemical, biological, and functional properties. The purpose of this paper was to present a summary of the utilization of AX as drug release matrices through a bibliometric analysis (BA) and a literature review to spotlight the AX functional characteristics and their technological applications to promote this line of research. The BA was carried out using data from a Web of Science database research, specifically emphasizing the analysis of authors' keywords. This approach was chosen due to its significance in comprehensively understanding a particular research field and its relevance for in-depth knowledge of a research field. The BA outcomes revealed limited information concerning the AX applications in both release matrices and as excipients in the formulation and development of drug delivery systems (DDS), so there is a need for additional scientific and technological research in these areas to address the existing information gaps. However, the literature review shows that the native and modified AX from different delivery release systems, such as macrogels (including films, tablets, and hard gelatin capsules) and multi-particulate systems (including micro and nanogels), present an excellent potential as release matrices of biomolecules and drugs, such as doxorubicin, diclofenac sodium, caffeine, gentamicin, tizanidine hydrochloride, and insulin. In conclusion, AX have a wide potential for application in the pharmaceutical industry, so this work is expected to be a reference point for future research by scientists, technologists, and entrepreneurs who cope with the subject.

Abstract
Three kinds of phenolic acids: ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA), and gallic acid (GA) with different chemical structures were individually grafted onto Arabic gum (AG) via a laccase mediated method, and their roles in stabilizing o/w emulsions were evaluated. The total phenolic content in modified AG increased from 2.7 ± 0.2 to 18.7 ± 0.2, 19.8 ± 0.6, 22.4 ± 0.8 mg/g after 4 h of laccase catalysis, respectively. FTIR spectra of modified AGs exhibited additional phenolic characteristics, revealing the successful grafting of phenolic acids to AG structure. Compared with natural AG, modified AGs showed remarkably enhanced thermal stability, as well as antioxidant capacity in an order of gallic acid > caffeic acid > ferulic acid. The incorporation of phenolic acids into AG dramatically improved its emulsification performance. Herein, gallic acid-modified AG evinced up to 17.6 % and 12.6 % increments in emulsifying activity and emulsion stability relative to natural AG, respectively. Moreover, the oxidative stability of AG emulsions was pronouncedly meliorated by the introduced phenolic acids, especially gallic acid, as manifested by the suppressed production of primary and secondary oxidation products.

Abstract
The concept of zero waste discharge has been gaining importance in recent years towards attaining a sustainable environment. Fruit processing industries generate millions of tons of byproducts like fruit peels and seeds, and their disposal poses an environmental threat. The concept of extracting value-added bioactive compounds from bio-waste is an excellent opportunity to mitigate environmental issues. To date, significant research has been carried out on the extraction of essential biomolecules, particularly polysaccharides from waste generated by fruit processing industries. In this review article, we aim to summarize the different extraction methodologies, characterization methods, and biomedical applications of polysaccharides extracted from seeds and peels of different fruit sources. The review also focuses on the general scheme of extraction of polysaccharides from fruit waste with special emphasis on various methods used in extraction. Also, the various types of polysaccharides obtained from fruit processing industrial wastes are explained in consonance with the important techniques related to the structural elucidation of polysaccharides obtained from seed and peel waste. The use of seed polysaccharides as pharmaceutical excipients and the application of peel polysaccharides possessing biological activities are also elaborated.

Abstract
This study performed a comprehensive investigation of Hyperici Perforati Herba polysaccharide (HPHP) regarding the development and optimization of extraction methods, elucidation of structure and characteristics, and determination of antioxidant activities. An ultrasonic-assisted extraction method, which offered advantages in terms of the extraction yield and energy efficiency, was developed by response surface analysis. The following optimum conditions were determined: a crushing degree at 65 mesh, ultrasonic time at 50 min and temperature of 43 °C. Through enzyme-mediated deproteination via the Sevag method, activated carbon depigmentation, and DEAE-52 and Sephadex G-100 column elution, three HPHPs were obtained, and their monosaccharides mainly included mannose, galactose, glucose and arabinose. The molar weights were 8.347, 1.199 and 22.426 kDa, respectively. The HPHP structures were an amorphous aggregate of spherical-like shapes with a rough surface of pores and crevices, which presented characteristic Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of polysaccharides. Their main glucosidic linkage is the α-type configuration. Moreover, HPHPs exhibited strong scavenging activity for DPPH·, ABTS·+, OH· and O2·- radicals; good ferric reducing power; and effective protection against oxidative damage in human cells. Overall, the results of this work underpinned a fundamental understanding of HPHPs, thus providing a potential antioxidant for further research and development.

Abstract
Roasting is an important operation to produce attractive colors and distinctive flavors during the production of sesame oil. To investigate the contributions of macromolecules to the color and flavor during roasting sesame seeds, water-soluble polysaccharides (WSP) and chelator-soluble polysaccharides (CSP) sequentially extracted from sesame hull were mixed with sesame protein isolate (SPI) at different ratios (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1, w/w), then the mixtures were roasted at 180 °C for 35 min. Results showed that WSP, CSP, and SPI degraded approximately at 150 °C and SPI had the highest thermal stability. According to monosaccharide/amino acid analysis, glucose and galacturonic acid showed the highest reduction rates, as well as lysine and arginine. CSP + SPI mixtures showed greater reactivity than WSP + SPI mixtures, resulting in a darker color and many more Maillard reaction products. The predominant volatiles of roasted WSP/CSP + SPI mixtures were aldehydes and heterocyclic compounds identified by headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS). This work provides some new information about flavor and color development during roasting sesame seeds.

Abstract
AIM To establish a fast, sensitive and accurate high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method for determining the monosaccharide content of Qingzhuan Dark Tea polysaccharides in different years (2 years, 5 years and 11 years). METHODS The optimised chromatographic conditions were achieved on a C18 column (5.0 μm, 250 mm × 4.6 mm inner diameter). The mobile phase flow rate was 0.9 mL/min and the column temperature was set to 27°C. The aqueous phase A (5 mM aqueous ammonium acetate) and organic phase B (acetonitrile) were used to elute the target analyses isocratically (0-60 min: 18% B). The mass spectrometer detector was equipped with an electron spray ionisation (ESI)source, and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was used for the determination of 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) derived monosaccharides. RESULTS We carried out a comprehensive methodological validation of PMP derived monosaccharides, including linearity, precision, stability and repeatability. Nine monosaccharides (rhamnose, mannose, ribose, glucose, galacturonic acid, xylose, galactose, fucose and arabinose) of Qingzhuan Dark Tea polysaccharides were identified, in which ribose and fucose were reported for the first time. The results showed the contents of these nine monosaccharides differed significantly among different years. CONCLUSIONS The validated method is reliable, accurate, repeatable and can be applied to quality assessment of these monosaccharides.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of polysaccharide from Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. pulp (JFP-Ps) on gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids production in mice. The microbial communities of V3 and V4 region 16S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR, then sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq PE250 platform and analyzed by multivariate statistical methods. The concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were measured using gas chromatography (GC) equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID). The results showed that JFP-Ps significantly affected the levels of intestinal bacteria, including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria, Tenericutes, Deferribacteres and TM7. The concentrations of acetic acid, propionic acid, n-butyric acid and total SCFAs in mouse feces were significantly increased by treatment with JFP-Ps for 2 weeks. These results indicate that JFP-Ps is beneficial to the gut health and can be developed as a functional ingredient in relation to gut health.

Abstract
The review describes botanical aspects, bioactive phytocompounds and pharmacological properties of different parts of Pithecellobium dulce, with special emphasis on the nutritional status of its fruits. The different parts of plant extract have been reported to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, cardio protective, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-ulcerogenic, larvicidal and ovicidal activities. Different parts of plant extracts were reported to contain several bioactive phytocompounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids etc. Natural products discovered so far served as a viable source for new drugs. Over the past few years, continued and perpetual attention of people has been paid to medicinal plants in connection with its remarkable importance in drug discovery. Plant products always remains a drug of choice for the identification of novel leads despite facing a tough competition from existing synthetic alternatives derived from combinatorial chemistry, owing to their efficacy, side effects, and safety. P. dulce is a highly acclaimed genus in traditional system of medicine because of its versatile nutraceutical and pharmacological properties. In this review we discuss in detail about nutritional and various therapeutic properties of P. dulce.

Abstract
A neutral polysaccharide (NPP) from peanut sediment of aqueous extraction process was purified via anion-exchange and gel-filtration chromatography. The weight-average molecular weight and polydispersity index were 3.36 × 104 Da and 1.06. Composition of glucose (82.66 %, molar percentage) and arabinose (17.34 %) suggested an arabinoglucan structure. Multiple medium-length chains consisting of many 1,4-linked α-Glcp and a few 1,5-linked α-Araf maintained the main chain structure. The backbone was substituted at O-6 and O-3 positions, attached by side chains consisting of two to six α-Glcp and terminated with Araf and Glcp. Degree of branching was 42.50 %. Aggregates formed in NPP aqueous solution. They were eliminated by DMSO combining with sonication. Consequently, the average radius of gyration (Rg), hydrodynamic radius (Rh), and Rg/Rh ratio were 17.0 nm, 5.8 nm and 2.93, respectively, indicating extended rigid chain conformation. The backbone substituted at O-3 and short branching chains probably together induced this conformation.

Abstract
This work aimed to investigate the structural characteristics, antioxidant activities and hepatoprotection effect of Chimonanthus nitens Oliv. leaves polysaccharides (COP) on alcohol-induced oxidative damage in mice. Physical and chemical analysis showed that COP contained four monosaccharides including arabinose (Ara), mannose (Man), glucose (Glu) and galactose (Gal), with mass percentages of 26.6%, 5.1%, 32.2% and 36.0%, respectively, which was a heteropolysaccharide with both α- and β- configurations. In vivo experiments indicated that oral administration COP significantly reduced the levels of ALT, AST and MDA in serum, and significantly increased the activity of SOD and GSH-Px. Mice pretreated with COP had a higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in liver and lower content of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β in the liver and serum when compared with alcohol exposure. In addition, the liver histopathological changes induced by alcohol returned to normal in the COP pretreatment group. These results suggest that COP has a protective effect on acute liver injury induced by alcohol.

Abstract
A neutral polysaccharide WM-NP-60 was successfully isolated and purified from a phytopathogenic fungus Sporisorium reilianum (Fries). The characteristics and potential antitumor activities of WM-NP-60 were studied. WM-NP-60 was a water-soluble polysaccharide. The molecular weight of WM-NP-60 was 15.6 kDa. The main chain of WM-NP-60 was composed of β-1,6-D-Glcp and its side chains were β-1,3-D-Glcp. The side chains bound to the main chain with glycosyl groups at the C-3 positions. Gal might be attached to the backbone as a side chain or bound to the linear β-1,3-D-Glcp side chain. WM-NP-60 could inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 and SGC7901 cells in a dose-dependently manner. In addition, it was found that WM-NP-60 triggered the HepG2 and SGC7901 cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase and induced apoptosis of HepG2 and SGC7901 cells. Taken together, these results suggested that WM-NP-60 possessed a tumor-suppressive activity and might be regarded as a potential natural anti-tumor drug.

Abstract
Inulin has been widely applied in food, pharmaceuticals, and many other fields because of its versatile physicochemical properties and physiological functions. Previous research showed that inulosucrase from microorganisms could produce higher-molecular-weight inulin than vegetal inulin. Herein, a food-grade recombinant Bacillus subtilis expression system was constructed to produce inulosucrase from Lactobacillus gasseri DSM 20604 without antibiotic resistance genes. The produced inulosucrase was used to biosynthesize inulin with an average molecular weight of 5.8 × 106 Da. The physicochemical properties of the produced Lactobacillus inulin were evaluated including microstructure, thermal characteristics, crystallinity, rheological behaviors, and storage stability. By comparing with vegetal inulin and other polymers, the biosynthesized microbial inulin showed some superior properties, such as better gel-forming capability and storage stability in aqueous solution than vegetal inulin. These results opened up possibilities for further investigations aimed at developing microbial inulin in the food industry.

Abstract
Two new polysaccharide fractions (TZP1-1 and TZP2-1) were obtained from the fruiting bodies of Thelephora ganbajun using DEAE-52 cellulose and Superdex 200 columns chromatography. The physiochemical characterization and biological activities of TZP1-1 and TZP2-1 were investigated. The relative molecular weight of TZP1-1 and TZP2-1 were 2.07 × 106 and 4,886 Da, respectively. TZP1-1 included mannose, rhamnose, galactose, and xylose (4:1:83.9:7.5), while TZP2-1 included mannose, glucose, galactose, and xylose (5.4:1:79.0:8.1). The Congo red experiment results confirmed that TZP2-1 had triple helix conformation. Furthermore, both TZP1-1 and TZP2-1 showed a certain cytotoxicity on HeLa and SH-SY5Y cells, while they exhibited a stronger inhibitory effect on HeLa than SH-SY5Y. Besides, the cytotoxicity of TZP1-1 was better than that of TZP2-1. Moreover, both of them exhibited a moderate inhibitory effect on α-amylase and α-glucosidase. These findings could promote the application of polysaccharides from T. ganbajun. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Thelephora ganbajun is an edible fungus widely distributed in Southwestern China. T. ganbajun polysaccharides as important active ingredients have not been reported. In this current study, two polysaccharides fractions (TZP1-1 and TZP2-1) were characterized, and their cytotoxicities and antidiabetic effect were also assayed. These findings could promote polysaccharides from T. ganbajun to be better application.

Abstract
The brewers' spent grain is a by-product generated during brewery process and is a potential source for arabinoxylans (AX) extraction. In the present work, the extraction and characterization of an arabinoxylan-rich fraction from brewers' spent grain (BSG-AX) were performed, and BSG-AX was evaluated as release matrix for caffeine. The BSG-AX showed an AX content of 72% (w/w), a ferulic acid content of 3.52 μg/mg BSG-AX, an Ara/Xyl ratio of 0.89, an intrinsic viscosity of 41.18 mL g-1, and a molecular weight of 43.80 kDa. The studied BSG-AX showed a good antioxidant capacity compared with other polysaccharide gums and was estimated by DPPH (114.41 μM Trolox equivalent/g BSG-AX) and FRAP (49.01 μmol Fe2+/g BSG-AX) assays. The partial specific volume (0.63 cm3 g-1), loss on drying (10.68%), swelling (10.87%), solubility (80.93%) and electrostatic interactions (by zeta potential, -3.44 to -9.17 mV) were determined and used to evaluate the application of the BSG-AX as release matrix. A film containing the BSG-AX, glycerol (as plasticizer) and caffeine (target drug) was prepared as release matrix. Glycerol promoted an increase in the extensibility and the surface smoothness of the BSG-AX-caffeine film. The drug was released (≈98%) in about 7 h. These results are promising to concern the design and use of BSG-AX based biofilms for the controlled release of bioactive compounds.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Lycium europaeum Linn. is widely used to treat the burning of the skin and well-known as a medicinal plant having various biological activities. AIMS OF THE STUDY The purpose of the present study is to characterize the polysaccharide from L. europaeum L. leaves (LEP) and to explore its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepato-nephroprotective properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS The structural and functional characteristics of LEP were investigated using X-ray diffraction techniques (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and FT-IR Spectroscopy. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays. Hepato-renal effects were studied using CCl4 and cisplatin-induced liver and kidney injuries in mice, respectively. Anti-inflammatory activity was assessed on carrageenan-induced paw edema. RESULTS The LEP showed an interesting water-holding capacity and effective foaming and emulsifying properties. XRD analysis suggested that LEP form a semi-crystalline polymer with an amorphous structure. FT-IR profile showed the presence of pyranose ring in LEP. SEM and helix-coil transition analyses indicated that LEP had a lamellar structure with angular edges and didn't present a triple helical conformation in solution. In vitro, LEP indicated significant concentration-dependent antioxidant activity. In vivo, LEP treatment significantly reduced the effects of CCl4 intoxication on serum liver biomarkers (AST, ALT, LDH, and GGT) and the effect of cisplatin on serum renal biomarkers (urea, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and uric acid). Meanwhile, LEP diminishes significantly the effect of CCl4 and cisplatin on the level of lipid peroxidation in liver and kidney tissues, respectively. Additionally, the normal histological structure of liver and kidney was restored after treatment with the polysaccharide. LEP possessed a significant anti-inflammatory activity on acute inflammation induced by carrageenan in mice. CONCLUSION Overall, the findings of this study support the traditional use of L. europaeum L. This plant may also be used as a good agent for protection against inflammatory diseases and hepato-renal injuries in patients with cancer.

Abstract
A water-soluble polysaccharide, named KMCP, was isolated and purified from edible plant Ixeris polycephala by using DEAE-52 cellulose chromatography. Its structure was determined by chemical analysis, methylation analysis, and NMR analysis, coupled with characterization by scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). The resulting data indicated that KMCP was an arabinogalactan, with an average molecular weight of 1.95×106Da, which was mainly composed of arabinose and galactose in a relative molar ratio of 28.1% and 70.3%, respectively. The structure of KMPC was characterized as 72.5% of (1→4)-β-Galp residues interspersed with 27.5% of (1→4,6)-β-Galp residues in the main chain, and the branches were composed of (1→5)-α-Araf moieties or α-Araf (1→5) α-Araf (1→disaccharide moieties attached at O-6 of the (1→4,6)-β-Galp residues. KMCP was revealed to be capable of exhibiting macrophage-mediated innate immune responses via enhancing phagocytosis of macrophages and increasing production of NO, activating NF-κB signaling pathway and promoting the mice spleen cells proliferation in a dose-dependent manner within the test concentrations (10.0-200.0μg/mL). These results suggested that KMCP could potentially be an effective and safe immunomodulator valuable to be utilized in pharmacological fields or in the development of functional foods.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to analyse the structure of CPP-2, and to observe the pharmacological effects of CPP-2 on lipid metabolism and oxidative stress. CPP-2, eluted as two main fractions comprised of two polysaccharides with Mw of 307 and 3.7kDa, was mainly consisted of rhamnose, mannose, glucose and galactose in a molar ratio of 1.00:0.78:3.22:0.45. The results showed that treatment with CPP-2 could improve blood lipid levels (TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C), liver lipid levels (TC and TG) and antioxidant status (SOD, T-AOC, GSH-PX, MDA and LPO). In addition, the histopathological observations of mice livers and the GPT activities indicated that CPP-2 could attenuate liver cell injury. The present findings demonstrated that CPP-2 might be effective in lowering lipid and protecting against HFE-induced hyperlipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver.

Abstract
Plantago notata (Plantaginaceae) is a spontaneous plant from Septentrional Algerian Sahara currently used by traditional healers to treat stomach disorders, inflammations or wound healing. A water-soluble polysaccharide, called PSPN (PolySaccharide fraction from Plantago Notata), was extracted and purified from the seeds of this semi-arid plant. The structural features of this mucilage were evaluated by colorimetric assays, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and 1H/13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. PSPN is a heteroxylan with a backbone composed of β-(1,3)-d-Xylp and β-(1,4)-d-Xylp highly branched, through (O)-2 and (O)-3 positions of β-(1,4)-d-Xylp by various side chains and terminal monosaccharides such as α-l-Araf-(1,3)-β-d-Xylp, β-d-Xylp-(1,2)-β-d-Xylp, terminal Xylp or terminal Araf. The physico-chemical and rheological analysis of this polysaccharide in dilute and semi diluted regimes showed that PSPN exhibites a molecular weight of 2.3×106g/mol and a pseudoplastic behavior.
