Synthesis, characterization and modification of Gum Arabic microgels for hemocompatibility and antimicrobial studies

Gum Arabic microgel-based biomimetic waterborne anticorrosive coatings with reinforced water and abrasive resistances

The inadequate water resistance and mechanical properties of waterborne anticorrosive coatings is a serious problem that leads to coating failure. When the bark of acacia trees sustains damage, the liquid Gum Arabic (GA) that oozes from the trunk coagulates at the site of injury to safeguard it, which is called "gummosis" self-protection. Inspired by this, biomimetic GA microgel-based waterborne anticorrosive coatings are designed. Microgel exhibits a crosslinked polymer network structure with a combination of advantageous characteristics derived from both solids and liquids. By encapsulating the liquid corrosion inhibitors (MeBT) within the solid microgel matrix, the coating system is endowed with self-protective capabilities. The as-prepared GAMG-MeBT microgels are introduced into waterborne epoxy (WE) matrix and sprayed onto the surface of Q235 steel. Corrosion studies reveal the 3.0-wt% GAMG-MeBT/WE coating exhibits an impedance modulus value in the low-frequency region (Z0.01Hz) of 1.37 × 109 Ω cm2 after immersing in 3.5-wt% NaCl solution for 60 days, which is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that of the pure WE coatings. Moreover, the coatings display improved water resistance, enhanced abrasive resistance, and active corrosion protection. This work provides a new approach to solving the failure of WE anticorrosive coatings.

Facile fabrication of microfibrillated cellulose-based aerogels incorporated with nisin/β-cyclodextrin microcapsule for channel catfish preservation

In this study, a hydrophobic and antibacterial pad was prepared to preserve Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The pad composite the microfibrillated cellulose and β-cyclodextrin/nisin microcapsules. The hydrophobic pad ensures a dry surface in contact with the fish, reducing microbial contamination. The pad has a low density and high porosity, making it lightweight and suitable for packaging applications, while also providing a large surface area for antibacterial activity. Results demonstrated that this antibacterial pad exhibits an ultralow density of 9.0 mg/cm3 and an ultrahigh porosity of 99.10%. It can extend the shelf life of Channel Catfish fillets to 9 days at 4 °C, with a total volatile base nitrogen below 20 mg/100 g. The study proposes a novel solution for preserving aquatic products by combining antibacterial substances with the natural base material aerogel. This approach also extends the utilization of aerogel and nisin in food packaging.

Smoke-water obtained via different biotics: a cost-effective and safer approach to biochemically sound banana ripening with prolonged shelf-life

This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of smoke-water obtained from biotics, for example coconut shells, rice husk, and pine cones on banana ripening, and compared with calcium carbide. Bio-chemical composition and remarkable bactericidal effect towards ATCC cultures of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus discovered the biological safety of the smoke-water in all collected smoke-water samples. Further, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was carried out to investigate heavy metals; however, no traces were found in all collected samples. Consequently, it is proposed that heavy metal-free smoke-water obtained from various biotics series might be employed as ultrasafe fruit ripening as compared to calcium carbide (CaC2) that was found with heavy metal traces.

Sulfur dots corrosion inhibitors with superior antibacterial and fluorescent properties

In this study, sulfur dots (GA-SDs) synthesized by using Gum Arabic (GA) as a green stabilizer were used as corrosion inhibitors and their inhibition effect for Q235 steel in 3.5- wt% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, electrochemical tests, and surface and interface analysis. The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency reached the maximum value of 96.5% at 250 mg/L and the water-soluble GA-SDs were able to adhere to the iron surface through the diffusion and agglomeration effect. The unique antibacterial activities demonstrated a 99.35% inhibition efficiency at 250 mg/L. Moreover, the optical properties endowed the inhibitors with the fluorescence tracing function, which is an effective approach to detecting the residual quantity of water treatment agents. This work may facilitate the development of the next generation of multifunction water treatment agents in industrial circulating water systems.

Fabricating gum polysaccharides based nano-composites for drug delivery uses via sustainable green approach

Recent advancements in development of natural polymer nono-composites led to exploration of potential of gum acacia (GA) and tragacanth gum (TG) for design of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) impregnated grafted copolymers via green approach for use in drug delivery (DD). The formation of copolymers was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS, XRD, FTIR,TGA and DSC. UV-Vis spectra indicated the formation of AgNPs using GA as reducing agent. TEM, SEM, XPS and XRD revealed impregnation of AgNPs inside the copolymeric network hydrogels. TGA inferred thermal stability of polymer enhanced by grafting and incorporation of AgNPs. The non-Fickian diffusion of antibiotic drug meropenem was revealed from drug encapsulated GA-TG-(AgNPs)-cl-poly(AAm) network which were also pH responsive and release profile was fitted in Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Sustained release was due to polymer-drug interaction. The polymer-blood interaction demonstrated biocompatible characteristics of polymer. Mucoadhesive property exhibited by copolymers because of supra-molecular interactions. Antimicrobial characteristics were shown by copolymers against bacteria S. flexneri, P. auroginosa, and B. cereus.

Natural Gums in Drug-Loaded Micro- and Nanogels

Gums are polysaccharide compounds obtained from natural sources, such as plants, algae and bacteria. Because of their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as their ability to swell and their sensitivity to degradation by the colon microbiome, they are regarded as interesting potential drug carriers. In order to obtain properties differing from the original compounds, blends with other polymers and chemical modifications are usually applied. Gums and gum-derived compounds can be applied in the form of macroscopic hydrogels or can be formulated into particulate systems that can deliver the drugs via different administration routes. In this review, we present and summarize the most recent studies regarding micro- and nanoparticles obtained with the use of gums extensively investigated in pharmaceutical technology, their derivatives and blends with other polymers. This review focuses on the most important aspects of micro- and nanoparticulate systems formulation and their application as drug carriers, as well as the challenges related to these formulations.

Synthesis of Gum Arabic Magnetic Nanoparticles for Adsorptive Removal of Ciprofloxacin: Equilibrium, Kinetic, Thermodynamics Studies, and Optimization by Response Surface Methodology

Given the increasing risks that antibiotic abuse poses to microecology and human health, it is imperative to develop incredibly powerful adsorbents. This study investigated the use of environmentally sustainable polymeric nanocomposite based on gum arabic (GA) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized via co-precipitation method to form gum arabic magnetitic nanoparticles (GA-MNPs) as an efficient adsorbent for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties and morphology of the synthesized GA-MNPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). The experiment was designed by response surface methodology (RSM) and the Central Composite Design (CCD) was utilized to optimize the operating variables: contact time (0–120 min), pH (3–10), adsorbent dosage (0.10–0.40 g/L), and concentration of adsorbate (5–100 mg/L). Results showed that 96.30% was the maximum percentage of CIP removed. The adsorption effect of the CIP molecule on the surface of the GA-MNPs was investigated using regression analysis and analysis of variance. Furthermore, Freundlich Isotherm and Pseudo Second order kinetic equations have the highest consistency with experimental investigations suggesting double-layer adsorption. This implies that chemisorption was the mechanism involved. In addition, the calculated thermodynamic parameters were postulating an exothermic and spontaneous method in nature. Owing to its adsorption selectivity and recyclability, GA-MNPs could be classified as an environmentally friendly, less expensive, and highly efficient promising adsorbent for remediation of CIP from aqueous solution.

Naringin-loaded Arabic gum/pectin hydrogel as a potential wound healing material

Wound healing is a complicated cellular process with overlapping phases. Naringin (NAR); a flavanone glycoside, possesses numerous pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects. In the current study, Arabic gum (AG)/pectin hydrogel was utilized to encapsulate NAR. Drug-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel exhibited excellent EE% of about 99.88 ± 0.096 and high DL% of about 16.64 ± 0.013. The formulated drug-loaded hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Zetasizer analyzer, besides determination of equilibrium degree of swelling (EDS%). Afterwards, wound healing potential of NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel was evaluated in an in vivo animal model. Results manifested that NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel was able to accelerate wound healing in terms of enhanced angiogenesis, re-epithelialization and collagen deposition. Furthermore, it significantly (P < 0.001) down-regulated the mRNA expression of inflammatory mediators (TNF-α) and apoptosis (BAX). In addition, NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel was found to possess potent antioxidant activity as it enhanced the levels of SOD and GSH, besides decreasing the levels of MPO, MDA and nitrite. These data suggest that NAR-loaded AG/pectin hydrogel could be utilized in wound healing applications.

Self-healing hydrogel based on polyphosphate-conjugated pectin with hemostatic property for wound healing applications

Self-healing hydrogels have important application in hemostasis and wound repairing. In this research, pectin based self-healing hydrogel was fabricated with conjugated polyphosphate for hemostatic and wound healing applications. The hydrogel formed without any stimulus and hydrogel kept its biocompatibility; at the same time, the hydrogel degraded completely by enzyme and in vivo. The polyphosphate conjugated hydrogel also showed self-healing property and sustained release performance with strong coagulation characteristic. More importantly, the in vivo experiment revealed that the polyphosphate conjugated hydrogel reduced the blood loss and hemostasis time in hemorrhage model; meanwhile, the hydrogel accelerated the wound repairing rate of the open wound by preventing bacterial invasion. Altogether, the PolyP conjugated hemostatic pectin-based hydrogel is a good candidate as wound dressing material applied in clinic or open wound repairing.

Highly biocompatible formulations based on Arabic gum Nano composite hydrogels: Fabrication, characterization, and biological investigation

In the study, fabrication of Arabic gum (AG) hydrogels via reverse micellization method is reported. AG hydrogels were utilized as capping agents to encapsulate zinc sulphide (ZnS), and cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanoparticles via in-situ reduction. Pristine and nanocomposite hydrogels (AG-ZnS and AG-CdS) were characterized through SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, UV/Visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The hydrogels were subjected to multiple biological assays including antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic formulation, in addition to biocompatibility test. The hydrogels were found to be more effective against bacterial and fungal strains. For instance, AG-ZnS exhibited excellent growth inhibition activity against Escherichia coli (ZoI: 12 ± 1.04 mm) and Candida albicans (35 ± 0.94 mm). Likewise, the nanocomposites hydrogel also displayed excellent DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging capacity, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and total reducing power (TRP) ability. Among the hydrogels, AG-ZnS demonstrated considerable α-amylase, and α-glucosidase inhibition potential. Above all, the hydrogels were found highly compatible with human red blood cells (hRBCs). Owing to remarkable antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and bio-compatible nature, the fabricated nanocomposites hydrogels have the potential to be explored in tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and in environmentally friendly hygiene products.

Tough and self-healing hydrogels based on transient crosslinking by nanoparticles

In this investigation, transient crosslinking was constructed to obtain a hydrogel with excellent mechanical and self-healing properties. Firstly, core-shell particles with hydrophilic amino groups were prepared by emulsion polymerization and subsequently dispersed into hydrophobic association polyacrylamide hydrogels. Transient crosslinking was constructed through hydrogen bonding between core-shell particles and polyacrylamide. As a result, the hydrogels exhibited a tensile strength of 1.4 MPa and self-healing efficiency of 98% at 24 h. Furthermore, reconstruction of the transient crosslinking was confirmed from rheological measurements. Therefore, the essential reinforcement principle based on transient crosslinking would open a novel strategy to obtain hydrogels with superior toughness and self-healing properties.

Synthesis and physicochemical characterization of methacrylic acid modified Arabic gum microgel as potential drug carrier

Carbohydrate polymers microgels are non-toxic and biocompatible which can be readily used in applications such as drug delivery, medicine, and pharmacy. This work synthesized Arabic gum (AG) microgel and methacrylic acid modified Arabic gum microgel (AGMAA) via water in oil emulsion polymerization technique using Tween 20 as surfactant and hexane as the solvent. The microgels were characterized using various physicochemical analysis such as Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, thermal stability using Differential Scanning Calorimetry, diffraction pattern analysis using X-Ray Diffraction, morphology observation using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope and zetasizer was used to analyze the size and zeta potential. The rate of deformation was higher in AG microgel compared to the AGMAA microgel. The particle size and zeta potential of AGMAA microgel were found larger and more negative than AG microgel, respectively. The microgels particle size and zeta potentials were found dependent on the amount of methacrylic acid as the modifying agents. The microgels were encapsulated with doxorubicin through the swelling method and the in-vitro release was studied in medium with pH 4.2 and 7.4. The results suggest the potentials of these microgels for drugs delivery.

Gum Arabic-Magnetite Nanocomposite as an Eco-Friendly Adsorbent for Removal of Lead(II) Ions from Aqueous Solutions: Equilibrium, Kinetic and Thermodynamic Studies

In this study, a gum Arabic-magnetite nanocomposite (GA/MNPs) was synthesized using the solution method. The prepared nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The prepared composite was evaluated for the adsorption of lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The controlling factors such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial ion concentration, and temperature were investigated. The optimum adsorption conditions were found to be 0.3 g/50 mL, pH = 6.00, and contact time of 30 min. The experimental data well fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 50.5 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated postulating an endothermic and spontaneous process and a physio-sorption pathway.

Nanogels: A novel approach in antimicrobial delivery systems and antimicrobial coatings

The implementation of nanotechnology to develop efficient antimicrobial systems has a significant impact on the prospects of the biomedical field. Nanogels are soft polymeric particles with an internally cross-linked structure, which behave as hydrogels and can be reversibly hydrated/dehydrated (swollen/shrunken) by the dispersing solvent and external stimuli. Their excellent properties, such as biocompatibility, colloidal stability, high water content, desirable mechanical properties, tunable chemical functionalities, and interior gel-like network for the incorporation of biomolecules, make them fascinating in the field of biological/biomedical applications. In this review, various approaches will be discussed and compared to the newly developed nanogel technology in terms of efficiency and applicability for determining their potential role in combating infections in the biomedical area including implant-associated infections.

Modification of Branched Polyethyleneimine Using Mesquite Gum for Its Improved Hemocompatibility

In the present study, the modification of branched polyethyleneimine (b-PEI) was carried out using mesquite gum (MG) to improve its hemocompatibility to be used in biomedical applications. In the copolymer synthesis process (carboxymethylated mesquite gum grafted polyethyleneimine copolymer (CBX-MG-PEI), an MG carboxymethylation reaction was initially carried out (carboxymethylated mesquite gum (CBX-MG). Subsequently, the functionalization between CBX-MG and b-PEI was carried out using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) as crosslinking agents. The synthesis products were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Thermogravimetric analysis showed that CBX-MG and CBX-MG-PEI presented a lower decomposition temperature than MG. The CBX-MG-PEI has a high buffer capacity in the pH range of 4 to 7, similar to the b-PEI. In addition, the CBX-MG-PEI showed an improvement in hemocompatibility in comparison with the b-PEI. The results showed a non-hemolytic property at doses lower than 0.1 µg/mL (CBX-MG-PEI). These results allow us to propose that this copolymer be used in transfection, polymeric nanoparticles, and biomaterials due to its physicochemical and hemocompatibility properties.

Gum Arabic as an environmentally sustainable polymeric anticorrosive material: Recent progresses and future opportunities

Gum Arabic (GA) is a plant exudate, consisting of glycoproteins (proteins with carbohydrate co-factor or prosthetic group) and polysaccharides mainly consisting of galactose and arabinose. Because of its polymeric nature and tendency to dissolve in water, GA is widely used as anticorrosive materials, especially in the aqueous electrolytes. GA contains various electron rich polar sites through which they easily get adsorbed on metallic surface and behaves as effective anticorrosive materials. Because of its natural and biological origin, GA is regarded as one of the environmental sustainable and edible alternatives to traditional toxic corrosion inhibitors. Present review piece of writing aims to illustrate the assortment of literatures on gum Arabic as a corrosion inhibitor. Limitation of traditional organic corrosion inhibitors and advantages of using GA as an environmental sustainable alternative have also been described along with the mechanism of corrosion inhibition.

Chemical and physical Chitosan modification for designing enzymatic industrial biocatalysts: How to choose the best strategy?

Chitosan is one of the most abundant natural polymer worldwide, and due to its inherent characteristics, its use in industrial processes has been extensively explored. Because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, hydrophilic, cheap, and has good physical-chemical stability, it is seen as an excellent alternative for the replacement of synthetic materials in the search for more sustainable production methodologies. Thus being, a possible biotechnological application of Chitosan is as a direct support for enzyme immobilization. However, its applicability is quite specific, and to overcome this issue, alternative pretreatments are required, such as chemical and physical modifications to its structure, enabling its use in a wider array of applications. This review aims to present the topic in detail, by exploring and discussing methods of employment of Chitosan in enzymatic immobilization processes with various enzymes, presenting its advantages and disadvantages, as well as listing possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds for formulating an ideal support for this purpose. First, we will present Chitosan emphasizing its characteristics that allow its use as enzyme support. Furthermore, we will discuss possible physicochemical modifications that can be made to Chitosan, mentioning the improvements obtained in each process. These discussions will enable a comprehensive comparison between, and an informed choice of, the best technologies concerning enzyme immobilization and the application conditions of the biocatalyst.

Vehiculation of Methyl Salicylate from Microcapsules Supported on Textile Matrix

In recent years, textile industries have focused their attention on the development of functional finishing that presents durability and, consequently, controlled release. However, in the case of methyl salicylate microcapsules supported on a textile matrix, studies indicate only the interactions between substrate and microcapsules and the drug delivery system, not applying the release equations. This study reports the mechanism and kinetics of controlled release of microcapsules of gelatin and gum Arabic containing methyl salicylate as active ingredient incorporated into textile matrices. According to the results presented, it was possible to verify that the wall materials participated in the coacervation process, resulting in microcapsules with well-defined geometry, besides promoting the increase of the thermal stability of the active principle. The samples (100% cotton, CO, and 100% polyamide, PA) functionalized with microcapsules released methyl salicylate in a controlled manner, based on the adjustment made by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model, indicating a Fickian mechanism. The influence of temperature was noticeable when the samples were subjected to washing, since with higher temperature (50 °C), the release was more pronounced than when subjected to lower temperature (37 °C). The results presented in this study indicate that the mechanism of backbone release is influenced by the textile matrix and by the durability of the microcapsule during the wash cycles.

Erythrocytes as model cells for biocompatibility assessment, cytotoxicity screening of xenobiotics and drug delivery

Erythrocytes (RBCs) represent the main cell component in circulation and recently have become a topic of intensive scientific interest. The relevance of erythrocytes as a model for cytotoxicity screening of xenobiotics is under the spotlight of this review. Erythrocytes constitute a fundamental cellular model to study potential interactions with blood components of manifold novel polymer or biomaterials. Morphological changes, subsequent disruption of RBC membrane integrity, and hemolysis could be used to determine the cytotoxicity of various compounds. Erythrocytes undergo a programmed death (eryptosis) which could serve as a good model for evaluating certain mechanisms which correspond to apoptosis taking place in nucleated cells. Importantly, erythrocytes can be successfully used as a valuable cellular model in examination of oxidative stress generated by certain diseases or multiple xenobiotics since red cells are subjected to permanent oxidative stress. Additionally, the antioxidant capacity of erythrocytes, and the activity of anti-oxidative enzymes could reflect reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating properties of various substances and allow to determine their effects on tissues. The last part of this review presents the latest findings on the possible application of RBCs as drug delivery systems (DDS). In conclusion, all these findings make erythrocytes highly valuable cells for in vitro biocompatibility assessment, cytotoxicity screening of a wide variety of substances as well as drug delivery.

Oxidized starch cross-linked porous collagen-based hydrogel for spontaneous agglomeration growth of adipose-derived stem cells

Many strategies have been employed to artificially reconstruct adipose tissue in tissue engineering. The functionalization and survival of reconstructed adipose tissue depend on sufficient angiogenesis. Notably, agglomeration growth of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) is beneficial to promoting angiogenesis. Herein, we present a porous collagen-based hydrogel for spontaneous agglomeration growth of ASCs to promote angiogenesis. Oxidized starch with different oxidation degree was prepared and used to cross-link collagen to fabricate the porous hydrogel. The gelation time and pore size of hydrogels can be controlled by adjusting the oxidation degree of starch. Crosslinking enhances the mechanical properties, inhibits the swelling and biodegradation of the hydrogels. The hydrogels possess good blood compatibility and cytocompatibility. Significantly, ASCs tended to adhere to the hydrogels and spontaneously grew into spheres along with time. Effective expression of vascular endothelial growth and fibroblast growth factors were observed. Overall, the hydrogels have application prospects in vascularized adipose tissue engineering.

Graphene oxide based functionalized chitosan polyelectrolyte nanocomposite for targeted and pH responsive drug delivery

Graphene oxide (GO) was first modified to amine functionalized GO (AGO) and acts as a cationic polyelectrolyte. Chitosan (CS) was conjugated with folic acid (FA) through N, N´ -Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide coupling to form FA-CS. After this, itaconic acid and acrylic acid monomers are grafted to the hydroxyl group of CS using ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate as cross linker and potassium peroxydisulfate as an initiator to generate -COOH functional groups and forming chemically modified chitosan (CMCS). Further doxorubicin (DOX) loaded into the FA-CMCS/AGO through π-π stacking interactions. The resulting nanocomposite was characterized by FTIR, SEM, TEM, Raman, AFM, DLS and ZP. The drug loading capacity was as high as 95.0% and the drug release rate at pH 5.3 was significantly higher than that under physiological conditions of pH 7.4. Cell viability of L929, HeLa and MCF7 cells was studied. The studies suggest the drug carrier has potential clinical applications for anticancer drug delivery.

One-Pot Sustainable Synthesis of Ce2S3/Gum Arabic Carbon Flower Nanocomposites for the Detection of Insecticide Imidacloprid

Investigating ecofriendly sustainable materials with excellent electrocatalytic activity is a pivotal approach for the analysis field. The present work reports on the preparation of novel three-dimensional (3D) cerium sulfide with gum arabic carbon flowers (Ce₂S₃/GACFs) via the hydrothermal method by using l-cysteine as a sulfur source, binding, and reducing agents. The intensive characterization techniques were utilized to corroborate the structural moiety, morphology, and size of Ce₂S₃/GACFs. The obtained 3D Ce₂S₃/GACF construction has excellent active sites, and hence it prevents the accumulation of carbon flowers. Furthermore, the obtained Ce₂S₃/GACF/glassy carbon electrode (GCE) could afford a very high electrocatalytic activity, possessing an exceedingly low detection limit of 32 nM, the high sensitivity of 2.65 μA μM^-1 cm^-2, good repeatability, and high stability for the detection of insecticide imidacloprid (IMC). The Ce₂S₃/GACF/GCE also provides a wide linear range of 0.05-1266 μM toward IMC detection. The excellent recovery results (90-99.3%) are achieved by using various spiked real food samples at Ce₂S₃/GACF/GCE. Confidently, this work gives up novel construction of 3D metal-carbon-based bioderived material for its catalytic application in the future.

Influence of modified starches as wall materials on the properties of spray-dried lemongrass oil

The use of lemongrass oil as food preservative present great potential, however it has high volatility and intense aroma, making them limited to be used as food additives. Microencapsulation processes become interesting alternatives to overcome these issues. This work investigated the influence of the partial replacement of gum arabic by modified starches on the microencapsulation of lemongrass oil as core material. Gum arabic and its combinations with modified starches: cassava and corn maltodextrins with different dextrose equivalent (DE) and octenyl succinic anhydride modified starch (OSA-starch) were studied. The emulsions were spray dried at controlled temperature of 170 °C. The evaluated parameters particles solubility, moisture content, and oil composition did not showed significant differences among the treatments. Replacement of gum arabic by maltodextrin DE20 and OSA-starch resulted in higher wetting times. Oil retention was increased (81.2%) when gum arabic was replaced by OSA-starch; the treatment without substitution, with only gum arabic had 67.5% of oil retention. Application of OSA-starch in association with gum arabic in microencapsulation by spray drying of lemongrass oil presented greater potential to be used due to its higher oil retention. Polymer blends should be assessed since they present advantages over individually applied polymers. Although maltodextrins show some differences compared to the treatment with only gum arabic, it may also be a viable alternative because of its lower cost.

Periodate-Modified Gum Arabic Cross-linked PVA Hydrogels: A Promising Approach toward Photoprotection and Sustained Delivery of Folic Acid

The chemically oxidized gum arabic was prepared and used as a naturally derived nontoxic and pH-responsive cross-linker to develop smart polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogels for the first time. The formulated hydrogels exhibited high mechanical properties, good porosity, and pH sensitivity, which facilitated their application as promising biomaterials for sustained delivery of folic acid. Further, the synthesized cross-linked PVA hydrogels displayed no cytotoxicity toward the human embryonic kidney cell line and exhibited higher blood compatibility. The hydrolytic degradation study confirmed their biodegradable nature. While the sustained delivery along with photoprotective properties of these hydrogels confirmed their multifunctional characteristics, these results suggest that these hydrogels may act as an efficient photoprotective material and find their application in the field of drug delivery.

Enhancement of biocompatibility and carbohydrate absorption control potential of rosmarinic acid through crosslinking into microparticles

Rosmarinic acid (RA), a bioflavonoid and antioxidant that exists in plants of the Lamiaceae family, was crosslinked into particles as poly(Rosmarinic Acid) (p(RA)) via an emulsion crosslinking method. The particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance 13C NMR spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The zeta potential values of p(RA) particles were determined at different pHs; the isoelectric point was estimated as pH 1.2. The release of monomeric RA from the particles at 37.5 °C was found to be similar at different pHs, 1.0, 7.4, and 11.0. The effects of p(RA) on hemolysis and coagulation were found to be minimal. The antioxidant activity of p(RA) particles and RA monomer were almost indistinguishable suggesting that p(RA) particles may be used as an antioxidant. On a per weight basis, p(RA) particles were ~66% less cytotoxic to mammalian cells that RA monomer, as assessed using COS-1 cells. In addition, p(RA) was an 8.6-fold stronger inhibitor of α-glycosidase than RA; the IC50s of the monomer and particles were 0.121 and 0.014 mg/mL, respectively. The strong inhibitory effect of p(RA) on α-glycosidase, coupled with its reduced cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity, provide new opportunities for the use of p(RA).

Preparation and characterization of nanocomposite films based on gum arabic, maltodextrin and polyethylene glycol reinforced with turmeric nanofiber isolated from turmeric spent

Turmeric nanofibers (TNF) were used as reinforcement in the gum arabic (GA), maltodextrin (MDX) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) matrices to enhance the physicochemical properties. The TNF were prepared from turmeric spent by acid hydrolysis accompanied by high pressure homogenization. The thermal and mechanical properties, structure morphology and antimicrobial activities of the prepared nanocomposites were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data indicate that the addition of TNF significantly increased the onset temperature (T_o), peak temperature (T_p) and conclusion temperature (T_c) of the melting peaks of nanocomposites, but considerably decreased the enthalpy change values. The tensile properties showed that the addition of TNF enhanced mechanical properties due to the formation of networks within the GA, MDX and PEG. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed the films of GA-TNF and MDX-TNF show smooth, homogenous surface due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding, and the film of PEG-TNF shows good dispersion of TNF with PEG matrix with rough surface because of strong interfacial adhesion between TNF and PEG and strong hydrogen bonding, which are further confirmed by the FT-IR spectroscopy. XRD results exhibited the disappearances of peaks of TNF indicating the reinforcement of TNF in the prepared nanocomposite matrices. The antibacterial tests show the prepared nanocomposites exhibited excellent antibacterial performance against Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium.

Tree gum-based renewable materials: Sustainable applications in nanotechnology, biomedical and environmental fields

The prospective uses of tree gum polysaccharides and their nanostructures in various aspects of food, water, energy, biotechnology, environment and medicine industries, have garnered a great deal of attention recently. In addition to extensive applications of tree gums in food, there are substantial non-food applications of these commercial gums, which have gained widespread attention due to their availability, structural diversity and remarkable properties as 'green' bio-based renewable materials. Tree gums are obtainable as natural polysaccharides from various tree genera possessing exceptional properties, including their renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature and their ability to undergo easy chemical modifications. This review focuses on non-food applications of several important commercially available gums (arabic, karaya, tragacanth, ghatti and kondagogu) for the greener synthesis and stabilization of metal/metal oxide NPs, production of electrospun fibers, environmental bioremediation, bio-catalysis, biosensors, coordination complexes of metal-hydrogels, and for antimicrobial and biomedical applications. Furthermore, polysaccharides acquired from botanical, seaweed, animal, and microbial origins are briefly compared with the characteristics of tree gum exudates.

Polydopamine particles as nontoxic, blood compatible, antioxidant and drug delivery materials

Herein, the potential biomedical application of poly(3,4-dihyroxyphenyl)ethylamine, (poly(dopamine)-p(DA)) particles is reported. P(DA) particles with the size about 100 nm, 18.05 m²/g specific surface area, and mesoporous structure (7.19 nm pore width) were prepared and shown to be chemically modifiable using chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) and 3-CHloro-2 hydroxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride solution (CHPACl) to obtain sulfonic acid and quaternary amine group containing modified p(DA) particles, m-p(DA)-CSA and m-p(DA)-CHPACl particles, respectively. The hydrolytic degradation of p(DA) particles at different pHs, including 1, 7.4 and 11, was carried out at 37.5 °C. These degradation studies revealed that p(DA) is slightly degradable at pH 1 and pH 7.4 with weight losses of 13.01 ± 0.08% and 7.26 ± 0.23% in 11 days, respectively. At pH 11, a sustained degradation that is almost linear degradation with time was observed for up to 30 days, with a total weight loss of 21.42 ± 0.88%. Furthermore, p(DA) particles were tested for cell toxicity against COS-1 cells and found non-toxic up to 50 μg/mL with 95.6 ± 4.5% cell viability as compared to 37.5 ± 0.03% for DA molecules. The p(DA) particles and DA were also compared for their ability to inhibit α-glucosidase; both inhibited α-glucosidase inhibition activity a concentration-dependent fashion: at concentrations of 500-4000 μg/mL, p(DA) provided 8.52-27.67% inhibition while DA inhibited 42.8-67.7% over the same concentration range. Furthermore, p(DA) particles were found to be blood compatible e.g., non-hemolytic with 1.87 ± 0.97% hemolysis ratio up to 50 μg/mL concentration and with 86.7% blood clotting index. Interestingly, p(DA) particle can be considered as an effective antioxidant with 33.5 ± 3.9 μg/ mL total phenol content in terms of gallic acid equivalency and 0.89 ± 0. 30 μmol/g trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). Finally, p(DA) particles and their modified forms, m-p(DA)-CSA, and m-p(DA)-CHPACl, were shown to be useful as active agent/drug delivery devices by using acyclovir as a model drug that can be readily loaded into particles and released at longer times at higher amounts for the modified p(DA) particles at physiological conditions.

Modifiable natural gum based microgel capsules as sustainable drug delivery systems

Few hundred micrometer size microgel capsules from natural locust bean gum (LBG) was synthesized by means of divinyl sulfone (DVS) crosslinking in a surfactant free cyclohexane medium with 100% yield in 1 h. These LBG microgel capsules were chemically modified with different numbers of linear amine containing modifying agents such as ethylenediamine (EDA), diethylenetriamine (DETA), triethylenetetraamine (TETA) and branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) to induce cationic character for LBG microgels. The biggest change in zeta potential of LBG microgels that is +44.9 mV from -17.67 mV was observed upon the modification of LBG microgels with branched PEI (LBG/PEI). The blood compatibility studies were revealed that bare LBG microgels possess a good blood compatibility with non-hemolytic value, 0.96 ± 0.15%, and high blood clotting index, 87.35 ± 4.10%, whereas the blood compatibility of LBG/PEI microgels was found to be slightly-hemolytic, 4.96 ± 1.03%, and also moderate blood clotting index, 65.98 ± 98%. Additionally, sodium diclofenac (SDC) as a model drug was loaded into the LBG based microgels by directly loading from solution (absorption) and by chemical conjugation methods for in vitro release studies at physiological conditions, pH 7.4 at 37.5 °C A longer, and sustainable drug release profiles were obtained from chemical drug conjugated LBG microgels and the amine modified LBG microgels.
