Ionic liquid decorated chitosan hybridized with clay: A novel support for immobilizing Pd nanoparticles

Ionic Liquids in Metal, Photo-, Electro-, and (Bio) Catalysis

Ionic liquids (ILs) have unique physicochemical properties that make them advantageous for catalysis, such as low vapor pressure, non-flammability, high thermal and chemical stabilities, and the ability to enhance the activity and stability of (bio)catalysts. ILs can improve the efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability of bio(transformations) by acting as activators of enzymes, selectively dissolving substrates and products, and reducing toxicity. They can also be recycled and reused multiple times without losing their effectiveness. ILs based on imidazolium cation are preferred for structural organization aspects, with a semiorganized layer surrounding the catalyst. ILs act as a container, providing a confined space that allows modulation of electronic and geometric effects, miscibility of reactants and products, and residence time of species. ILs can stabilize ionic and radical species and control the catalytic activity of dynamic processes. Supported IL phase (SILP) derivatives and polymeric ILs (PILs) are good options for molecular engineering of greener catalytic processes. The major factors governing metal, photo-, electro-, and biocatalysts in ILs are discussed in detail based on the vast literature available over the past two and a half decades. Catalytic reactions, ranging from hydrogenation and cross-coupling to oxidations, promoted by homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in both single and multiphase conditions, are extensively reviewed and discussed considering the knowledge accumulated until now.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized chitosan-metal-organic framework composite for efficient and rapid conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

In pursuit of designing a bio-based catalyst for the dehydration of biomass (i.e., fructose) to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, a novel catalytic composite was prepared by in-situ formation of an Al-based metal-organic framework in the presence of chitosan. To enhance the acidity of the as-prepared catalyst, it was sulfonated with chlorosulfonic acid. Various characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, FTIR, SEM/EDX, TGA, and elemental mapping analysis were applied to validate the formation of the acidic composite. Fructose dehydration conditions were also optimized using Response Surface Method (RSM) and it was found that reaction in the presence of catalyst (23 wt%) in DMSO, at 110 °C for 40 min led to the formation of HMF in 97.1%. Noteworthy, the catalyst was recyclable and stable up to five runs with a minor reduction in its activity.

Modification of Pillared Intercalated Montmorillonite Clay as Heterogeneous Pd Catalyst Supports

Montmorillonite clay was modified by pillaring with AlMn oxides in different Al/Mn ratios and intercalation of two kinds of N-containing polymers (i.e., chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl pyrrolidinone (PVP)) chains. The modified pillared montmorillonite clay (PM) showed a rich two-dimensional layered porous structure with tunable parameters, such as large interlayer spacing, high specific area, and large porous volume. They were then used as supports for Pd nanoparticles. As applied in coupling reactions of aryl halides with terminal alkynes, Pd@CS/AlMn-PM showed better comprehensive catalytic performance than Pd@PVP/AlMn-PM. This was mainly attributed to its higher specific area, stronger chelation to Pd species, and better solvent resistance.

Heteropolyacid supported on ionic liquid decorated hierarchical faujasite zeolite as an efficient catalyst for glycerol acetalization to solketal

To handle huge amount of glycerol produced in biodiesel industry, glycerol is transformed to value-added products. In this regard, glycerol acetalization to solketal is industrially attractive. As in this process various by-products can be formed, designing highly selective catalysts is of great importance. In this line, we wish to report a novel catalyst that benefits from strong acidity, high specific surface area and thermal stability, which can selectively form solketal in glycerol acetalization. To prepare the catalyst, hierarchical zeolite was prepared via a novel method, in which partially dealuminated NaY was treated with PluronicF-127 and then reacted with NH4NO3 to furnish the H-form zeolite. Hierarchical faujasite was then achieved through calcination and template removal. Subsequently, it was functionalized with ionic liquid and used for the immobilization of heteropolyacid. The results indicated the importance of the mesoprosity of zeolite and the presense of ionic liquid functionality for achiveing high solketal yield. Moreover, among three investigated heteropolyacids, phosphomolybdic acid exhibited the highest catalytic activity. In fact, using 10 wt% catalyst at 55 °C and glycerol to acetone molar ratio of 1:20, solketal with yield of 98% was furnished under solvent-less condition. Besides, the catalyst was recyclable with low leaching of heteropolyacid.

Nanocomposites based on halloysite nanotubes and sulphated galactan from red seaweed Gloiopeltis: Properties and delivery capacity of sodium diclofenac

We developed novel composite films based on biocompatible components, such as halloysite clay nanotubes and sulphated galactan (Funori) from red seaweed Gloiopeltis. The filling of the nanotubes within the sulphated galactan matrix was carried out by a green protocol (aqueous casting method) assuring that Funori/halloysite nanocomposites can be totally considered as sustainable materials. The amount of halloysite in the composites was systematically changed to explore the effects of the nanofiller concentration on the mesoscopic properties of the films. We observed that the halloysite content significantly affects the initial water contact angle and the light attenuation coefficient of the Funori based films. These results were interpreted according to SEM images, which showed that the surface morphologies of the nanocomposites depend on the halloysite amounts filled within the polymeric matrix. The mechanical characterization of the nanocomposites was conducted by tensile experiments performed using a linear stress ramp. Moreover, tensile tests were conducted in oscillatory regime at variable temperature to investigate the viscoelastic properties of the nanocomposites. Finally, we filled the biopolymeric matrix with halloysite nanotubes containing sodium diclofenac. The drug release kinetics from the nanocomposites at variable halloysite contents were studied to evaluate their suitability as oral dissolving films for pharmaceutical applications.

TiO2-Modified Montmorillonite-Supported Porous Carbon-Immobilized Pd Species Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Sonogashira Reactions

In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO₂ was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO₂-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd⁰ nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO₂ as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO₂-MMT₈₀/PCN₂₀@Pd⁰ showed a high surface area of 108.9 m²/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59-99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid-solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Halloysite nanotubes as nanoreactors for heterogeneous micellar catalysis

HYPOTHESIS

Electrostatic attractions between the anionic head group of sodium alkylsulphates and the positively charged inner surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) drive to the formation of tubular inorganic micelles, which might be employed as nanoreactors for the confinement of non polar compounds in aqueous media. On this basis, sodium alkylsulphates/halloysite hybrids could be efficient nanocatalysts for organic reactions occurring in water.

EXPERIMENTS

Sodium decylsulphate (NaDeS) and sodium dodecylsulphate (NaDS) were selected for the functionalization of the halloysite cavity. The composition, the structure and the surface charge properties of the hybrid nanotubes were determined. The actual formation of inorganic micelles was explored by studying the microviscosity and polarity characteristics of the surfactant modified nanotubes through fluorescence spectroscopy experiments using DiPyme as probe. The performances of the sodium alkylsulphates/halloysite composites as micellar catalysts for the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction were investigated.

FINDINGS

The halloysite functionalization with sodium alkylsulphates generated the formation of hydrophobic microdomains with an enhanced microviscosity. Compared to the surfactant conventional micelles, the functionalized nanotubes induced larger enhancements on the rate constant of the BZ reaction. This is the first report on the surfactant/halloysite hybrids showing their efficiencies as reusable nanocatalysts, which are dependent on their peculiar microviscosity and polarity properties.

Halloysite Nanoclay with High Content of Sulfonic Acid-Based Ionic Liquid: A Novel Catalyst for the Synthesis of Tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans

One of the main drawbacks of supported ionic liquids is their low loading and consequently, low activity of the resultant catalysts. To furnish a solution to this issue, a novel heterocyclic ligand with multi imine sites was introduced on the surface of amino-functionalized halloysite support via successive reactions with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and 2-aminopyrimidine. Subsequently, the imine sites were transformed to sulfonic acid-based ionic liquids via reaction with 1,4-butanesultone. Using this strategy, high loading of ionic liquid was loaded on halloysite nanoclay. The supported ionic liquid was then characterized with XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, FTIR, BET, TGA and elemental mapping analysis and utilized as a metal-free Brønsted acid catalyst for promoting one-pot reaction of aldehydes, dimedone and malononitrile to furnish tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans. The catalytic tests confirmed high performance of the catalyst. Moreover, the catalyst was stable upon recycling.

Clay nanotube-metal core/shell catalysts for hydroprocesses

Catalytic hydroprocesses play a significant role in oil refining and petrochemistry. The tailored design of new metal nanosystems and optimization of their support, composition, and structure is a prospective strategy for enhancing the efficiency of catalysts. Mesoporous support impacts the active component by binding it to the surface, which leads to the formation of tiny highly dispersed catalytic particles stabilized from aggregation and with minimized leaching. The structural and acidic properties of the support are crucial and determine the size and dispersion of the active metal phase. Currently, research efforts are shifted toward the design of nanoscale porous materials, where homogeneous catalysts are displaced by heterogeneous. Ceramic materials, such as 50 nm diameter natural halloysite nanotubes, are of special interest for this. Much attention to halloysite clay is due to its tubular structure with a hollow 10-15 nm diameter internal cavity, textural characteristics, and different chemical compositions of the outer/inner surfaces, allowing selective nanotube modification. Loading halloysite with metal particles or placing them outside the tubes provides stable and efficient mesocatalysts. The low cost of this abundant nanoclay makes it a good choice for the scaled-up architectural design of core-shell catalysts, containing active metal sites (Au, Ag, Pt, Ru, Co, Mo, Fe₂O₃, CdS, CdZnS, Cu-Ni) located inside or outside the tubular template. These alumosilicate nanotubes are environment-friendly and are available in thousands of tons. Herein, we summarized the advances of halloysite-based composite materials for hydroprocesses, focusing on the selective binding of metal particles. We analyze the tubes' morphology adjustments and size selection, the physicochemical properties of pristine and modified halloysite (e.g., acid-etched or silanized), the methods of metal clusters formation, and their localization. We indicate prospective routes for the architectural design of stable and efficient nanocatalysts based on this safe and natural clay material.

Composite of MOF and chitin as an efficient catalyst for photodegradation of organic dyes

A novel composite has been fabricated by using MOF and chitin as a natural and biocompatible compound. To this purpose, MOF was synthesized by using 2-aminoterephthalic acid and iron (III) chloride hexahydrate and then reacted with Cl-functionalized chitin. The resulting composite was characterized and utilized as a catalyst for degradation of methylene blue both in dark condition and under visible light irradiation. The results indicated superior catalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, study of the reaction variables, including basicity, dye concentration and catalyst loading showed that the highest catalytic activity was achieved at basic condition. It was also found that both initial dye concentration and catalyst loading can affect the catalytic activity. To disclose the merits of the composite compared to its individual components, kinetic studies of the photo-degradation process in the presence of the composite, chitin and MOF have been performed. The results confirmed superior activity the composite compared to its components. The study of the mechanism of the reaction using scavengers confirmed that the created holes (h⁺) are the most effective species in the process of photocatalytic degradation of MB. Notably, the catalyst was recyclable and could be used for degradation of other dyes.

Pd NPs supported on halloysite functionalized with Schiff base as an efficient catalyst for Sonogashira reaction

A hybrid system was designed and synthesized through reacting modified halloysite (Hal-Cl) with Schiff base (DAB-PC) and applied as catalytic support for anchoring Pd NPs to afford Pd@Hal-DAB-PC catalyst. The resultant material was well identified by various analyses including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and revealed outstanding catalytic activity in the Sonogashira reaction in aqueous media. Also, This nanocatalyst was simply collected and recycled up to six runs with a slight drop in efficiency, indicating the durability of Pd@Hal-DAB-PC.

Fabrication of a metal free catalyst for chemical reactions through decoration of chitosan with ionic liquid terminated dendritic moiety

In attempt to develop a biocompatible metal-free catalyst, a dendritic moiety was grown on chitosan through successive reactions with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and ethylenediamine. Subsequently, the terminal functional groups of the dendron were decorated with 1-methylimidazolium chloride. The catalyst was characterized with SEM, EDS, TGA, FTIR, XRD and mapping analysis. Then, the catalytic activity of the resultant composite was scrutinized for catalyzing Knoevenagel condensation and synthesis of xanthene derivatives in aqueous media under mild reaction condition. The results confirmed high activity of the catalyst, superior to ionic liquid free counterpart and bare chitosan. This observation was ascribed to the instinct catalytic activity of ionic liquid. Moreover, using control catalysts, it was confirmed that the presence of the dendritic moiety that could increase the content of ionic liquid on the backbone of the catalyst enhanced the catalytic activity.

Bio-assisted synthesized Ag(0) nanoparticles stabilized on hybrid of sepiolite and chitin: efficient catalytic system for xanthene synthesis

In this work, with the use of two natural compounds, chitin and sepiolite clay, a novel covalent hybrid is fabricated and applied as a support for the stabilization of silver nanoparticles with the aid of Kombucha extract as a natural reducing agent. The resultant catalytic system, Ag@Sep-N-CH, was characterized via XRD, TEM, FTIR, ICP, SEM, TGA, UV-Vis and BET. It was found that fine Ag(0) nanoparticles with mean diameter of 6.1 ± 1.8 nm were formed on the support and the specific surface area of the catalyst was 130 m2 g-1. The study of the catalytic performance of Ag@Sep-N-CH for catalyzing synthesis of xanthenes in aqueous media under mild reaction condition confirmed that Ag@Sep-N-CH exhibited high catalytic activity and could promote the reaction of various substrates to furnish the corresponding products in high yields. Moreover, the contribution of both chitin and sepiolite to the catalysis has been affirmed. It was found that hybridization of these two components led to synergistic effects and consequently improved the observed catalytic activity. Notably, the catalyst was recyclable up to several reaction runs.

Bionanocomposite Films Containing Halloysite Nanotubes and Natural Antioxidants with Enhanced Performance and Durability as Promising Materials for Cultural Heritage Protection

In the last decade, the interest toward the formulation of polymer films for cultural heritage protection continuously grew, and these films must be imperatively transparent, removable, and should not react/interact with surface of the artworks. In this research, bionanocomposite films, based on chitosan (Ch) and pectin (P) and containing naturally occurring fillers and antioxidants, were formulated by solvent casting methods and were accurately characterized. The natural halloysite nanotubes (HNT) have a two-fold role, specifically, physical compatibilizer and antioxidant carrier. Therefore, the theoretical solubility between Ch and P was estimated considering Hoy’s method for solubility of polymers, while the optimum ratio between biopolymer constituents was assessed by ζ-potential measurements. The transparency, wettability, and mechanical behavior of Ch:P films, also in presence of HNT without and with antioxidants, were investigated. The beneficial effects of natural antioxidants, such as vanillic acid (VA) and quercetin (Q), on Ch:P/HNT durability were found.

Pd on poly(1-vinylimidazole) decorated magnetic S-doped grafitic carbon nitride: an efficient catalyst for catalytic reduction of organic dyes

A novel magnetic catalyst, (SGCN/Fe₃O₄/PVIs/Pd) was synthesized by growing of poly(1-vinylimidazole) on the surface of ionic liquid decorated magnetic S-doped graphitic carbon nitride, followed by stabilization of palladium nanoparticles. Catalytic activity of the prepared heterogeneous catalyst was explored for the catalytic reduction of hazardous dyes, methyl orange and Rhodamine B, in the presence of NaBH₄. Besides, the effects of the reaction variables on the catalytic activity were investigated in detail. The kinetics study established that dye reduction was the first order reaction and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 72.63 kJ/mol and 68.35 kJ/mol¹ for methyl orange and Rhodamine B dyes, respectively. Moreover, ΔS^# and ΔH^# values for methyl orange were found to be − 33.67 J/mol K and 68.39 kJ/mol respectively. These values for Rhodamine B were − 45.62 J/mol K and 65.92 kJ/mol. The recycling test verified that the catalyst possessed good stability and reusability, thereby making it a good candidate for the catalytic purposes. Furthermore, a possible catalytic mechanism for dye catalytic reduction over SGCN/Fe₃O₄/PVIs/Pd was proposed.

Halloysite Nanotubes Coated by Chitosan for the Controlled Release of Khellin

In this work, we have developed a novel strategy to prepare hybrid nanostructures with controlled release properties towards khellin by exploiting the electrostatic interactions between chitosan and halloysite nanotubes (HNT). Firstly, khellin was loaded into the HNT lumen by the vacuum-assisted procedure. The drug confinement within the halloysite cavity has been proved by water contact angle experiments on the HNT/khellin tablets. Therefore, the loaded nanotubes were coated with chitosan as a consequence of the attractions between the cationic biopolymer and the halloysite outer surface, which is negatively charged in a wide pH range. The effect of the ionic strength of the aqueous medium on the coating efficiency of the clay nanotubes was investigated. The surface charge properties of HNT/khellin and chitosan/HNT/khellin nanomaterials were determined by ζ potential experiments, while their morphology was explored through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Water contact angle experiments were conducted to explore the influence of the chitosan coating on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of halloysite external surface. Thermogravimetry (TG) experiments were conducted to study the thermal behavior of the composite nanomaterials. The amounts of loaded khellin and coated chitosan in the hybrid nanostructures were estimated by a quantitative analysis of the TG curves. The release kinetics of khellin were studied in aqueous solvents at different pH conditions (acidic, neutral and basic) and the obtained data were analyzed by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. The release properties were interpreted on the basis of the TG and ζ potential results. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that halloysite nanotubes wrapped by chitosan layers can be effective as drug delivery systems.

Halloysite/Keratin Nanocomposite for Human Hair Photoprotection Coating

We propose a novel keratin treatment of human hair by its aqueous mixtures with natural halloysite clay nanotubes. The loaded clay nanotubes together with free keratin produce micrometer-thick protective coating on hair. First, colloidal and structural properties of halloysite/keratin dispersions and the nanotube loaded with this protein were investigated. Above the keratin isoelectric point (pH = 4), the protein adsorption into the positive halloysite lumen is favored because of the electrostatic attractions. The ζ-potential magnitude of these core-shell particles increased from -35 (in pristine form) to -43 mV allowing for an enhanced colloidal stability (15 h at pH = 6). This keratin-clay tubule nanocomposite was used for the immersion treatment of hair. Three-dimensional-measuring laser scanning microscopy demonstrated that 50-60% of the hair surface coverage can be achieved with 1 wt % suspension application. Hair samples have been exposed to UV irradiation for times up to 72 h to explore the protection capacity of this coating by monitoring the cysteine oxidation products. The nanocomposites of halloysite and keratin prevent the deterioration of human hair as evident by significant inhibition of cysteic acid. The successful hair structure protection was also visually confirmed by atomic force microscopy and dark-field hyperspectral microscopy. The proposed formulation represents a promising strategy for a sustainable medical coating on the hair, which remediates UV irradiation stress.

Alkynes as Privileged Synthons in Selected Organic Name Reactions

BACKGROUND

Alkynes are actually basic chemicals, serving as privileged synthons for planning new organic reactions for assemblage of a reactive motif, which easily undergoes a further desirable transformation. Name reactions, in organic chemistry are referred to those reactions which are well-recognized and reached to such status for being called as their explorers, discoverers or developers. Alkynes have been used in various name reactions. In this review, we try to underscore the applications of alkynes as privileged synthons in prevalent name reactions such as Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddtion via Click reaction, Sonogashira reaction, and Hetero Diels-Alder reaction.

OBJECTIVE

In this review, we try to underscore the applications of alkynes as privileged synthons in the formation of heterocycles, focused on the selected reactions of alkynes as a synthon or impending utilization in synthetic organic chemistry, which have reached such high status for being included in the list of name reactions in organic chemistry.

CONCLUSION

Alkynes (including acetylene) are an unsaturated hydrocarbon bearing one or more triple C-C bond. Remarkably, alkynes and their derivatives are frequently being used as molecular scaffolds for planning new organic reactions and installing reactive functional group for further reaction. It is worth mentioning that in general, the terminal alkynes are more useful and more frequently being used in the art of organic synthesis. Remarkably, alkynes have found different applications in pharmacology, nanotechnology, as well as being known as appropriate starting precursors for the total synthesis of natural products and biologically active complex compounds. They are predominantly applied in various name reactions such as Sonogashira, Glaser reaction, Friedel-crafts reaction, Castro-Stephens coupling, Huisgen 1.3-dipolar cycloaddtion reaction via Click reaction, Sonogashira reaction, hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. In this review, we tried to impress the readers by presenting selected name reactions, which use the alkynes as either stating materials or precursors. We disclosed the applications of alkynes as a privileged synthons in several popular reactions, which reached to such high status being classified as name reactions. They are thriving and well known and established name reactions in organic chemistry such as Regioselective, 1,3-dipolar Huisgen cycloaddtion reaction via Click reaction, Sonogashira reaction and Diels-Alder reaction.

Fabrication of CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels for highly efficient catalytic reduction of organic pollutants

In this study, natural polymer material chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) with large specific surface area were used to prepare a new CS/RGO-based composite hydrogel by using glutaraldehyde (GA) as cross-linking agent. In addition, a CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was prepared by loading palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). The morphologies and microstructures of the prepared hydrogels were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, TG, and BET. The catalytic performance of the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel was analyzed, and the experimental results showed that the CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogel had good catalytic performance for degradation of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) and o-nitroaniline (2-NA). Therefore, this study has potential application prospect in wastewater treatment and provides new information for composite hydrogel design.

New functional CS/GA/RGO/Pd composite hydrogels are prepared via a self-assembly process, demonstrating potential applications in catalysis as well as composite materials.

Why does vacuum drive to the loading of halloysite nanotubes? The key role of water confinement

The filling of halloysite nanotubes with active compounds solubilized in aqueous solvent was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Based on Knudsen thermogravimetric data, we demonstrated the water confinement within the cavity of halloysite. This process is crucial to properly describe the driving mechanism of halloysite loading. In addition, Knudsen thermogravimetric experiments were conducted on kaolinite nanoplates as well as on halloysite nanotubes modified with an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecanoate) in order to explore the influence of both the nanoparticle morphology and the hydrophobic/hydrophilic character of the lumen on the confinement phenomenon. The analysis of the desorption isotherms allowed us to determine the water adsorption properties of the investigated nanoclays. The pore sizes of the nanotubes' lumen was determined by combining the vapor pressure of the confined water with the nanoparticles wettability, which was studied through contact angle measurements. The thermodynamic description of the water confinement inside the lumen was correlated to the influence of the vacuum pumping in the experimental loading of halloysite. Metoprolol tartrate, salicylic acid and malonic acid were selected as anionic guest molecules for the experimental filling of the positively charged halloysite lumen. According to the filling mechanism induced by the water confinement, the vacuum operation and the reduced pressure enhanced the loading of halloysite nanotubes for all the investigated bioactive compounds. This work represents a further and crucial step for the development of halloysite based nanocarriers being that the filling mechanism of the nanotube's cavity from aqueous dispersions was described according to the water confinement process.

Porous organic polymer with in situ generated palladium nanoparticles as a phase-transfer catalyst for Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction in water

A new Pd nanoparticle loaded and imidazolium-ionic liquid decorated organic polymer of Pd@PTC-POP was readily fabricated via a Pd(PPh₃)₄ catalysed in situ one-pot Suzuki cross-coupling reaction between imidazolium attached dibromobenzene and 1,3,5-tri(4-pinacholatoborolanephenyl)benzene. Besides the high thermal and chemical stability, the obtained Pd@PTC-POP can be used as a highly active and reusable phase-transfer solid catalyst to promote the Sonogashira coupling reaction in water. The obtained results indicate that the Pd@PTC-POP herein could create a versatile family of solid phase transfer catalysts for promoting a broad scope of reactions carried out in water.
