Abstract
Green food packaging plays an important role in environmental protection and sustainable development. Therefore, it is advisable to employ low-energy consumption manufacturing techniques, select environmentally friendly materials, and focus on cost-effectiveness with high production yields during the production process. In this study, an amphiphilic polyquaternium called PBzCl was proposed and synthesized by free radical polymerization of cost-efficient quaternary ammonium salts and methacrylate monomers. Then, biodegradable PCL and PVP were used to rapidly prepare the PBzCl@PCL/PVP nanofiber films via environmentally friendly microfluidic-blow-spinning (MBS). The best antibacterial effect was observed at a PBzCl loading concentration of 13.5%, and the PBzCl@PCL/PVP nanofiber films had 91% and 100% antibacterial rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Besides, the loading of PBzCl improved the water stability of the PCL/PVP nanofiber films, and the films also showed excellent biocompatibility. Overall, PBzCl@PCL/PVP nanofibre films have promising food packaging potential.

Abstract
Food packaging based on natural polymers from polysaccharides and proteins can be an alternative to replace conventional plastics. In the present study, semi-refined iota carrageenan (SRIC) and fish gelatin (FG) were used as polymer matrix film with different concentration ratios (0.5:1.5 %, 1.0:1.0 % and 1.5:0.5 % w/w) and SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles were incorporated as fillers with the same concentration in all formulas (0.5:1.5 % w/w carrageenan-fish gelatin). This study aimed to develop films for food packaging applications with desirable physical, mechanical, optical, chemical, and microbiological properties. The results showed that incorporating SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles significantly (p < 0.05) improved the films' elongation at break, UV-screening properties, and antimicrobial activity. Also, the films' thickness, degradability, and transparency significantly (p < 0.05) increased with the higher concentration of fish gelatin addition in the SRIC matrix polymer. The best formula was obtained on the SRIC-FG film at the ratio of 1.5:0.5 % w/w, which performed excellent antimicrobial activity. Thus, semi-refined iota carrageenan/fish gelatin-based biocomposite film incorporated with SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles can be potentially developed as eco-friendly and intelligent food packaging materials to resolve traditional plastic-related issues and prevent food waste.

Abstract
Composite edible films were developed by casting method using sunnhemp protein isolate (SHPI) and potato starch (PS) at various proportions (100:0, 90:10, 80:20; 70:30, 60:40, and 50:50) containing glycerol as a plasticizer and clove oil. All the edible films were evaluated for thickness, moisture content, solubility, swelling ratio, water activity. Further characterization of edible films was done on the basis of mechanical, optical, thermal and structural attributes along with morphology. Among all the films, composite film containing 50 % SHPI, 50 % PS and 1 % clove oil were having better characteristics. The solubility and WVP decreased, while the tensile strength and elongation at break of composite film increased with the inclusion of potato starch and clove oil. Intermolecular interactions in the composite film matrix were confirmed by FTIR and XRD analysis. SEM images confirmed the structural compactness and integrity of all the developed films. The amino acid composition of edible films indicated presence of most of the essential amino acids. The present finding of this research work shows that the utilization of sunnhemp protein in the development of biocomposite edible films represents an alternative opportunity of sustainable edible food packaging.

Abstract
To effectively extend the shelf life of fruits meanwhile facilitating consumers to judge their freshness, in this work, a double-layer multifunctional film combining CO2 sensitivity and antibacterial properties was successfully prepared by adding methyl red (MR), bromothymol blue (BTB) into gellan gum (GG) as the sensing inner layer, and doping tannic acid (TA) into sodium alginate with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the antimicrobial outer layer, which was applied to the freshness indication of strawberries. Microscopic morphology and spectral analysis demonstrated that the bi-layer films were fabricated successfully. The mechanical characteristics, thermal stability, water vapor resistance, and antibacterial capabilities of the bilayer films improved as TA concentration rose. They exhibited noticeable color changes at pH = 2-10 and different concentrations of CO2. Application of the prepared films to strawberries revealed that the GG-MB@SC-6%TA film performed most favorably under 4 °C storage conditions, not only monitoring strawberry freshness but also retaining high soluble solids and titratable acidity, resulting in a slight decrease in hardness and weight loss. Therefore, taking into account all of the physical-functional characteristics, the GG-MB@6%TA film has a broad application prospect for intelligent food packaging.

Abstract
The electrospun gelatin nanofibers containing black elderberry (BE) extract, Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and SnO2 were fabricated as intelligent packaging layer for Hake fish (Merluccius merluccius) fillets. Image analysis confirmed the formation of continuous ultrafine fibers. Differences between nanofibers were evaluated in terms of thermal stability, and chemical composition during storage. Fourier transform infrared spectrums indicated strong bonding interactions between gelatin and other compounds. Thermal analysis results showed that the addition of AuNPs contributed to the thermal stabilization of the gelatin chain. L, a, and b values of nanofibers were also measured. A rapid color change occurred after exposure to volatiles with the highest difference in L (52.29 %) of the sample containing gelatin, BE, SnO2 and AuNPs (p < 0.05). This study showed that the absorption of volatiles on nanofibers can be detected from color changes of nanofibers. The outcomes of this study can be applied for intelligent packaging layer in seafood products.

Abstract
Packaging is very important to maintain the quality of food and prevent the growth of microbes. Therefore, the use of food packaging with antimicrobial properties protects the food from the growth of microorganisms. In this study, antibacterial nanocomposite films of polyvinyl alcohol/starch/chitosan (PVA/ST/CS) together with nickel oxide-copper oxide nanoparticles (NiO-CuONPs) are prepared for food packaging. NiO-CuONPs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method, and structural characterization of nanoparticles (NPs) was carried out by XRD, FTIR, and SEM techniques. Composites of PVA/ST/CS, containing different percentages of NPs, were prepared by casting and characterized by FTIR and FESEM. The mechanical properties, diffusion barrier, and thermal stability were determined. The nanoparticles have a round structure with an average size of 6.7 ± 1.2 nm. The cross-section of PVA/ST/CS film is dense, uniform, and without cracks. In the mechanical tests, the addition of NPs up to 1% improved the mechanical properties (TS = 31.94 MPa), while 2% of NPs lowered TS to 14.76 MPa. The fibroblast cells toxicity and the films antibacterial activity were also examined. The films displayed stronger antibacterial effects against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) compared to Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). Furthermore, these films have no toxicity to fibroblast cells and the survival rate of these cells in contact with the films is more than 84%. Therefore, this film is recommended for food packaging due to its excellent mechanical and barrier properties, good antibacterial activity, and non-toxicity.

Abstract
A pea starch (PS) and pulp cellulose nanofibers (CNF-P) hybrid matrix biodegradable film was prepared using apple polyphenol (AP) as the active substance. SEM and thermogravimetric analyses showed that apple polyphenols could be uniformly distributed and form hydrogen bonds with the matrix, and the increase in crystallinity improved the thermal stability of the films (the final residue of the films increased from 22.66 % to 31.82 %). The TS and EAB of the films reached their maximum values of 11.14 ± 1.73 MPa and 71.55 ± 8.8 %, respectively, at an AP content of 1.5 %. It should be noted that the antioxidant properties of the films were significantly positively correlated with the AP content, and the DPPH radical scavenging rate of the films reached 73.77 % at an AP content of 4.5 %, which was about 49 times higher than that of the control film. The same trend was observed in the UV-vis spectra. In addition, the total color difference and water solubility of the membranes increased from 4.29 ± 0.29 to 31.86 ± 1.90 and from 20.01 ± 0.97 % to 21.70 ± 1.99 %, respectively, and the biodegradability also showed an upward trend. These findings provide a theoretical basis and data support for the development of multifunctional biodegradable food packaging materials.

Abstract
Food packaging with antibacterial properties has attracted much attention recently. In this study, nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) were synthesized by co-precipitation and then gelatin/chitosan polymer films (GEL/CS) with different percentages of NiONPs, bio-nanocomposites, were prepared by casting. Morphology, crystal microstructure, molecular interactions and thermal stabilities of the NPs and the composite films were characterized by FESEM, XRD, FTIR and TGA, respectively. The bio-nanocomposite films exhibited excellent barrier, thermal and mechanical properties by addition of an optimized content of NPs. For example, the tensile strength (TS) of the GEL/CS film without NPs was 23.83 MPa and increased to 30.13 MPa by incorporation of 1% NPs. The antibacterial properties and toxicity of the films were investigated. These films show good antibacterial behavior against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria compared to Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. Furthermore, the films were found to be non-toxic to fibroblast cells that came into contact with the films, with a survival rate of more than 88%. Therefore, these films can be applied for food packaging due to their excellent mechanical, barrier, and antibacterial properties.

Abstract
In this research, a novel double-layer film based on polycaprolactone and cress seed mucilage containing zinc oxide nanoparticles (0.5-2 %) was synthesized using solution casting technique, as an interactive multi-functional wound dressing. The bilayer films were characterized by measuring moisture content, contact angle parameter, porosity, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), color attributes and opacity, swelling, degradation, mechanical properties, cell viability, and antimicrobial activity, as well as using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that the film containing 1.5 % zinc oxide nanoparticles had the best performance, with high swelling ability (3600 %) and 25 % degradation within 24 h of placement in a wound simulator solution. Its mechanical properties, including tensile strength and elongation at break, were 9 MPa and 5.53 %, respectively. In investigating the antimicrobial activity of the optimal film against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the diameter of the inhibition zone was observed to be 39.33 and 42 mm, respectively. Moreover, increasing the number of ZnO-NPs hindered the growth of NIH/3T3 cells, but the 1.5 % ZnO-NP loaded film showed a high percentage of cell viability in 1 day (90 %) and 3 days (93 %), which is suitable for biomedical applications.

Abstract
This study developed a new "capture and killing" antibacterial approach for efficient elimination of foodborne pathogens. Fe3O4-Chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous films with improved antibacterial and mechanical properties were fabricated by a simple, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective electrospinning technique. The relationship between the physical properties (viscosity, surface tension, and conductivity) and spinnability of CS/PVA as fiber forming matrix was explored. Electrospun Fe3O4-CS/PVA films (0.03-0.12 mm) with smooth and bead-free nanofibrous structures (145-169 nm) were successfully obtained. Compared with the film electrospun from neat CS/PVA, incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) (1.25-5 wt%) in CS/PVA nanofibrous film promoted bacterial attachment and increased the final inactivated efficiency, showing a difference with Fe3O4 loading and bacterial strain, which had the highest value against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphyloccus aureus (S. aureus) being 90 % and 66.30 %, respectively. The tensile strength and elongation at break of Fe3O4-CS/PVA films enhanced by 46-192 % and 92-141 %, respectively. Results of the cytotoxicity test indicated that the resulting films had high biocompatibility. These promising findings provide a novel strategy for effective foodborne pathogens elimination, which could apply to sterilizing and food packaging to extend the shelf life of liquid food.

Abstract
Cross-linking is the most promising method for preparing high-performance chitosan/gelatin bio-polymer film. In this work, vanillin cross-linked chitosan/gelatin bio-polymer (CGGV) film with good mechanics, water resistance, antioxidant and ultraviolet-proof property was prepared. The micro-structure, physical and functional properties of CGGV film were studied. Results showed that vanillin as a cross-linking agent provided a compact inner micro-structure through Schiff base and hydrogen bond interaction. Moderate cross-linking significantly improved mechanical strength, thermal ability, hydrophobicity of the films and reduced the water vapor permeability, swelling ratio and water solubility. Especially, CGGV films showed stronger ultraviolet-proof properties and possessed potent radical scavenging activity. Therefore, CGGV film is suitable to protect per-mature fruits and could be used as novel multifunctional packaging in the agriculture and foods industry.

Abstract
Food industry is the biggest and rapidly growing industries all over the world. This sector consumes around 40 % of the total plastic produced worldwide as packaging material. The conventional packaging material is mainly petrochemical based. However, these petrochemical based materials impose serious concerns towards environment after its disposal as they are nondegradable. Thus, in search of an appropriate replacement for conventional plastics, biopolymers such as polysaccharides (starch, cellulose, chitosan, natural gums, etc.), proteins (gelatin, collagen, soy protein, etc.), and fatty acids find as an option but again limited by its inherent properties. Attention on the initiatives towards the development of more sustainable, useful, and biodegradable packaging materials, leading the way towards a new and revolutionary green era in the food sector. Eco-friendly packaging materials are now growing dramatically, at a pace of about 10-20 % annually. The recombination of biopolymers and nanomaterials through intercalation composite technology at the nanoscale demonstrated some mesmerizing characteristics pertaining to both biopolymer and nanomaterials such as rigidity, thermal stability, sensing and bioactive property inherent to nanomaterials as well as biopolymers properties such as flexibility, processability and biodegradability. The dramatic increase of scientific research in the last one decade in the area of bionanocomposites in food packaging had reflected its potential as a much-required and important alternative to conventional petroleum-based material. This review presents a comprehensive overview on the importance and recent advances in the field of bionanocomposite and its application in food packaging. Different methods for the fabrication of bionanocomposite are also discussed briefly. Finally, a clear perspective and future prospects of bionanocomposites in food packaging were presented.

Abstract
Ultrasound (US) assisted with Fenton (US-Fenton) reaction was developed to efficiently and greenly prepare starch nanoparticles (SNPs) that were employed as nanofillers to enhance gelatin (G) film properties. Compared to Fenton reaction alone, US-Fenton reaction significantly improved preparation efficiency and dispersion of SNPs (p < 0.05). An optimal US-Fenton reaction parameter (300 mM H2O2, ascorbic acid 55 mM, US 45 min) was found to prepare SNPs with uniform sizes (50-90 nm) and low molecular weight (Mn 7.91 × 105 Da). The XRD, FT-IR, and SAXS analysis revealed that the US-Fenton reaction degraded the amorphous and crystalline zones of starch from top to down, leading to the collapse of the original layered structure starch and the progressive formation of SNPs. The different sizes of SNPs were selected to prepare the composite films. The G-SNP3 film (with 50-90 nm SNPs) showed the most outstanding UV blocking, tensile, and barrier properties. Especially, the tensile strength of G-5%SNP3 film (containing 5 % SNPs) increased by 156 % and 6 % over that of G film and G-5%SNP2 film (containing 5%SNPs with 100-180 nm), respectively. Therefore, the nanomaterial was promisingly prepared by the US-Fenton system and provided a strategy for designing and producing nanocomposite films.

Abstract
Active packaging derived from polysaccharides plays an important role in prolonging the shelf life of food. In this study, cinnamon essential oil (CEO)-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CNs) were prepared and embedded in hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)/hydroxypropyl starch (HPS) blends to enhance the physicochemical and biofunctional properties of the formed films. Different concentrations (25, 50, 75, and 100 μL/mL) of CEOs were encapsulated with CNs to form CEO-CNs, as confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The prepared CEO-CNs were incorporated into the HPMC/HPS film-forming matrix to prepare reinforced nanocomposite films. SEM images showed that the CEO-CNs were dispersed in the HPMC/HPS matrix, thus filling the void space in the composite matrix and significantly improving the mechanical and barrier properties of the bio-nanocomposite films. The elongation at break of the reinforced films improved from 8.54 ± 0.53 MPa to 24.81 ± 0.47 MPa, and the water vapor permeability was reduced by nearly 30 %. FTIR and XRD analyses indicated the formation of hydrogen bonds between CEO-CNs and HPMC/HPS polymer molecules. Release studies showed that the nanocomposite film was capable of sustained release of CEO, which imparted antioxidant (radical scavenging activity of 27.66-42.19 %) and antimicrobial properties (inhibition of Escherichia coli and Aspergillus flavus growth). Therefore, these HPMC/HPS nanocomposite films with enhanced properties may have great potential for food preservation.

Abstract
Current trends in food packaging systems are toward biodegradable polymer materials, especially the food biopolymer films made from polysaccharides and proteins, but they are limited by mechanical strength and barrier properties. Nano-chitin has great economic value as a highly efficient functional and reinforcing material. The combination of nano-chitin and food biopolymers offers good opportunities to prepare biodegradable packaging films with enhanced physicochemical and functional properties. This review aims to give the latest advances in nano-chitin preparation strategies and its uses in food biopolymer film reinforcement and applications. The first part systematically introduces various preparation methods for nano-chitin, including chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) and chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs). The nano-chitin reinforced biodegradable films based on food biopolymers, such as polysaccharides and proteins, are described in the second part. The last part provides an overview of the current applications of nano-chitin reinforced food biopolymer films in the food industry.

Abstract
Chronic wounds are a major concern for global health, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. As their occurrence is correlated with age and age-related comorbidities, their incidence in the population is set to increase in the forthcoming years. This burden is further worsened by the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which causes wound infections that are increasingly hard to treat with current antibiotics. Antimicrobial bionanocomposites are an emerging class of materials that combine the biocompatibility and tissue-mimicking properties of biomacromolecules with the antimicrobial activity of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. Among these nanostructured agents, zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most promising for its microbicidal effects and its anti-inflammatory properties, and as a source of essential zinc ions. This review analyses the most recent developments in the field of nano-ZnO–bionanocomposite (nZnO-BNC) materials—mainly in the form of films, but also hydrogel or electrospun bandages—from the different preparation techniques to their properties and antibacterial and wound-healing performances. The effect of nanostructured ZnO on the mechanical, water and gas barrier, swelling, optical, thermal, water affinity, and drug-release properties are examined and linked to the preparation methods. Antimicrobial assays over a wide range of bacterial strains are extensively surveyed, and wound-healing studies are finally considered to provide a comprehensive assessment framework. While early results are promising, a systematic and standardised testing procedure for the comparison of antibacterial properties is still lacking, partly because of a not-yet fully understood antimicrobial mechanism. This work, therefore, allowed, on one hand, the determination of the best strategies for the design, engineering, and application of n-ZnO-BNC, and, on the other hand, the identification of the current challenges and opportunities for future research.

Abstract
Ixiolirion tataricum mucilage (ITM) was characterized and applied in fabrication of ITM/chitosan (CH) blend films activated by Foeniculum vulgare essential oil (FEO) in free and nanoliposomal forms. Uniform smooth surface structure, viscoelastic solid-like behavior and Newtonian nature of ITM were confirmed by morphological and rheological analyses. The prepared FEO nanoliposomes (FEO-NLPs) showed desirable properties in terms of particle size (57.2 nm), polydispersity index (0.243), zeta-potential (-17.6 mV), and encapsulation efficiency (85.2 %). The enhancing effects of FEO-NLPs and the adverse effects of free FEO on the crystalline, morphological and structural properties of films were confirmed by XRD, FE-SEM and ATR-FTIR tests. FEO-NLPs loaded films had better mechanical, thermal, water and gas barrier and antioxidant properties than neat film. Analysis also indicated the high controlled release of FEO from the films containing the nanoliposomal form of FEO. The films containing free FEO showed higher antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus in comparison with FEO-NLPs loaded ones. The results showed the potential of FEO-NLPs loaded ITM/CH films for antioxidant food packaging applications.

Abstract
Biodegradable food packaging films (FPFs) assembled from sustainable biopolymeric materials are of increasing interest to the food industry due to pollution and health risks resulting from the use of conventional plastic packaging. However, the functional performance of these FPFs is often poorer than that of plastic films, which limits their commercial application. This problem may be partly overcome by incorporating nano-additives like zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) into the films. The incorporation of ZNPs into FPFs can improve their functional performance. The properties of these films depends on the concentration, dispersion state, and interactions of ZNPs with the biopolymeric matrix in the films. ZNPs-loaded films and coatings are highly effective at preserving a variety of fresh foods. Studies of ZNPs migration through FPFs have shown that the zinc is mainly transported in an ionic form and the amount entering foods is below safety standards. This article reviews recent developments in the design, fabrication, and application of ZNPs-loaded FPFs based on biopolymers, focusing on the impacts of ZNPs on the optical, barrier, mechanical, water sensitivity, and antimicrobial properties of the films. The potential applications of ZNPs-loaded FPFs for fresh food preservation is also discussed.

Abstract
The postharvest physiological and metabolic activities caused fruits and vegetables (F&V) quality deterioration. Therefore, developing an efficient preservation strategy is a promising approach to relieve this issue. In this study, a modified metal-organic framework (MOF; i.e., Cer@MHKUST-1) was encapsulated into a blended matrix of chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQAS)/gelatin to fabricate a multifunctional (water-locking, ethylene-removing, and antibacterial) packaging biopolymer-based film (i.e., CMCGF), the characteristics and preservative effects of the packaging were investigated. Results indicated that the physicochemical (e.g., mechanical, gas/light barrier, wettability) properties of CMCGF were improved compared with the control film (i.e., CGF). CMCGF have a higher ethylene adsorption performance of 65-69 cm3/g STP compared with CGF (7.8 cm3/g STP). Cu ions released from CMCGF destroyed the cell wall and membrane, resulting in the death of bacteria, and the antibacterial efficiency of CMCGF against E. coli and S. aureus was 97-100 % and 98-100 %, respectively. Postharvest storage experiments on tomato and winter jujube confirmed the high-efficiency preservation effect of CMCGF packaging. Therefore, CMCGF provides a multifunctional approach to extending the shelf-life of perishable products to decrease food wastage.

Abstract
Interest in the use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in surface coatings and films has increased as its incorporation can significantly improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of coatings and film solutions. In an effort to produce green or eco-friendly products, the potential use of ZnO NPs biosynthesized from natural resources to replace conventional petroleum-derived polymers has been investigated. This review provides an insight into the growing trend of incorporating ZnO NPs into synthetic or semi-synthetic or bio-based polymeric materials via different synthesis methods as well as its characteristics and potential applications in surface coatings and films. The antimicrobial potential of ZnO NPs to inhibit the growth of various types of microorganisms as well as its use in surface coatings or films to impart antimicrobial activities that prevent the spread of microorganisms, especially the COVID-19 virus, was also discussed.

Abstract
This study describes the preparation and characterization of eggplant peel extract-loaded electrospun gelatin nanofiber and study of its in vitro release. Results obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) micrograph revealed that eggplant peel extract-loaded electrospun gelatin nanofiber is in nanometric range with an average diameter 606.7 ± 184.5 and 643.6 ± 186.7 nm for 20 and 33.3 mg mL−1 of extract addition, respectively. Moreover, the incorporation of extract improved morphology by being smooth, homogeneous, and without account formation compared to nanofibers without extract (control). Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectra indicated that interaction exists between electrospun gelatin nanofiber and eggplant peel extract by hydrogen bond interactions, mainly. Electrospun gelatin nanofibers showed encapsulation efficiency greater than 90% of extract and a maximum release of 95 and 80% for the medium at pH 1.5 and 7.5, respectively. Therefore, the electrospinning technique is a good alternative for the conservation of bioactive compounds present in the eggplant peel through electrospun gelatin nanofiber.

Abstract
Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill (OFI) is considered a natural source of bioactive phytochemicals, mainly isorhamnetin glycosides (IRGs). These compounds have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities, among others. The development of a suitable delivery system for these compounds is needed to improve their chemical and biological stability. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of fabrication and characterization of IRG-loaded gelatin (GL) forcespun fibers and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde (GTA). Two different percentages (25% and 30% w/v) of GL were evaluated with 12% (w/v) OFI flour to obtain nanofibers GL/OFI1 and GL/OFI2, respectively. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the fibers were investigated. The results indicated that the diameters of the fibers were on the nanoscale. The amount of IRGs was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The IRGs release and the cytocompatibility of the nanofibers were also evaluated. GL concentration significantly affected the IRG release. Among both nanofibers, the GL/OFI2 nanofiber achieved a cumulative IRGs release of 63% after 72 h. Both fibers were shown to be biocompatible with human skin/fibroblast cells. Specifically, GL/OFI1 nanofibers exhibited favorable features for their application as an extract-coupled release system. The IRGs-embedded GL nanofiber mats may become a good alternative for the delivery of phytochemicals for the health sector and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Gelatin (GH) is a natural polymer material with unique physical, chemical, and biological properties that render it a good base material for biomedical material production. Herein, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were loaded onto a waterborne polyurethane-GH composite (WPU-g-GH) to prepare a GH-based nanocomposite (AgNP/WPU-g-GH) films). The prepared nanocomposite films were characterized using several analyses including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission emission microscopy, mechanical strength tests, and other analyses. The results demonstrated that the nanocomposite films had high mechanical strength, good thermal stability, and controllable biodegradability. In particular, when the AgNP loading content was 0.03%, the tensile strength, elongation at break, and average particle size of the nanocomposite film reached 45.13 MPa, 476.04%, and 13.02978 ± 1.64406 nm, respectively. Disk diffusion and cytotoxicity analyses revealed that the nanocomposite films exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria without affecting the cell viability of fibroblasts. These findings indicate that the nanocomposite films with high mechanical strength and antibacterial activity could be used for wound management, tissue adhesion, and biomaterial surface coating.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop and characterize gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol (G/PVA) films loaded with black cumin cake extract (BCCE) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). The BCCE was also applied for the green synthesis of ZnONPs with an average size of less than 100 nm. The active films were produced by a solvent-casting technique, and their physicochemical and antibacterial properties were investigated. Supplementation of G/PVA film in ZnONPs decreased the tensile strength (TS) from 2.97 MPa to 1.69 MPa. The addition of BCCE and ZnONPs increased the elongation at the break (EAB) of the enriched film by about 3%. The G/PVA/BCCE/ZnONPs film revealed the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP = 1.14 × 10−9 g·mm·Pa−1·h−1·mm−2) and the highest opacity (3.41 mm−1). The QUick, Easy, New, CHEap and Reproducible (QUENCHER) methodologies using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) were applied to measure antioxidant capacity (AC) of the prepared films. The incorporation of BCCE and ZnONPs into G/PVA films enhanced the AC by 8–144%. The films containing ZnONPs and a mixture of BCCE and ZnONPs inhibited the growth of three Gram-positive bacterial strains. These nanocomposite films with desired functional properties can be recommended to inhibit microbial spoilage and oxidative rancidity of packaged food.

Abstract
Herein, we developed clove essential oil (CEO) loaded Chitosan-ZnO hybrid nanoparticles (CS-ZnO@CEO (CZC NPs)) integrated chitosan/pullulan (CS/PL) nanocomposite films. SEM images revealed a homogenous distribution of CZC NPs with minimum aggregation in nanocomposite films. The incorporation of CZC NPs led to enhanced tensile strength (~39.82%), film hydrophobicity (~35.36%), UV light blocking ability, water vapor barrier (~84.64%), and oxygen barrier (~57.66%) compared to the bare CS/PL film and overall migration limit of CPCZC films were found below the permitted limit of 1000 μg/dm2. Besides, incorporation of CZC NPs into the CS/PL films enhanced antioxidant activity and showed strong antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and E. coli. Also, the CPCZC films displayed potential to extend the shelf-life of chicken meat by up to 5 days when stored at 8 ± 2 °C. These results suggest that the prepared CPCZC films acquire the ideal prerequisites for potential active packaging materials.

Abstract
Nanotechnology involves developing, characterising, and applying structures ranging in size from 1 to 100 nm. As a key advanced technology, it has contributed to a substantial impact across engineering, medicine, agriculture and food. With regards to their application in food, nanomaterials posses the ability to lead the quantitative and qualitative development of high-quality, healthier, and safer foods by outperforming traditional food processing technologies for increasing shelf life and preventing contaminations. Although rapid progress has been made in nanotechnology in food products, the toxicity of nanoparticles and nanomaterials is not very well known. As a result, nanomaterials are potentially toxic, therefore, considering the constantly increasing employment in food science, they need to be further characterised, and their use must be better regulated. We may face a crisis of nanotoxicity if the molecular mechanisms by which nanoparticles and nanomaterials interact with food and within living organisms is not fully understood. Food safety can be guaranteed only if we are thoroughly aware of nanomaterial properties and potential toxicity. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to have in the food sector a regulatory system capable of managing nanofood risks and nanotechnology, considering the health effects of food processing techniques based on nanotechnology. This present review discusses the impact and role nanotechnology play in food science. The specific application of Nanomaterials in food science, their advantages and disadvantages, the potential risk for human health and the analysis to detect nanocomponents are also highlighted. Nanotechnology can be used in food and feed processing at any level. Nanocomposite materials have been used in active packaging to prevent the passage of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and moisture into the food. Nanomaterials must be used with caution because they have the potential to cause toxic effects. Nanomaterials can travel deeper into the nucleus of cells and damaging the DNA. Analytical methods are required to reliably detect and characterize nanoparticles.

Abstract
The purpose of the present research was to fabricate ethylcellulose (ECL)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (GEL) electrospun nanofibers containing Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) and zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO) to provide an appropriate substrate for food packaging. The ECL/PCL/GEL was incorporated with ZEO and ZnO at the concentrations of 10, 20, 30 and 50 wt% and 3 wt%, respectively. The results of ECL/PCL/GEL/ZEO/ZnO nanofiber exhibited uniform morphology with a mean diameter ranging from 361.85 ± 18.7 to 467.33 ± 14.50 nm and enhanced thermal stability. The ECL/PCL/GEL/ZEO/ZnO nanofiber had the highest mechanical parameters, such as young's modulus (437.49 ± 18), tensile strength (7.88 ± 0.7), and elongation at break (5.02 ± 0.6) and water contact angle (61.13 ± 0.5), compared with the other nanofibers. The cell viability during 48 and 72 h was obtained to be about more than 80% for all the nanofibers. Additionally, the ECL/PCL/GEL incorporated with 50% ZEO and 3% ZnO displayed the highest antioxidant activity (34.61 ± 1.98%) and antifungal properties against Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger. In general, the ECL/PCL/GEL with the weight ratio of 20:70:10 nanofiber incorporated with 30% ZEO and 3% ZnO was obtained to have appropriate mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties and thermal stability.

Abstract
Wound healing is a complex pathophysiological process, highlighting the importance of effective and thorough wound care along with the prevention of wound infection, a major barrier that can slow down or even disrupt the healing process. To date, there are plenty of herbal plants well known and historically supernatural, showing profound wound healing effects. Application of such herbal extracts/ingredients in electrospun nanofiber platforms has shown promising outcomes in improving wound healing process. Based on these facts, we loaded Calendula officinalis extract (CO) in chitosan/polyethylene oxide scaffolds (CS/PEO) by electrospinning. Using SEM, morphology of electrospun scaffolds showed a narrow range of fiber diameter, around 143--252 nm, with uniform and bead-free appearance. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of CO extract in nanofibrous scaffolds. Of importance, incorporation of CO extract improved mechanical properties of CS/PEO nanofibers. A 1602 cP reduction in viscosity and a 0.892 ms/cm increase in the conductivity of the solution was observed after addition of the CO extract. CO extract showed strong antibacterial properties with 96% and 94% reduction in Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, respectively. In vitro studies with fibroblast cells confirmed enhanced proliferation, growth and attachment of the cells. The in vivo and histological analysis of rat wounds, revealed excellent wound healing ability of CS/PEO/CO dressings (87.5 % wound closure after 14 days) via improving collagen synthesis, re-epithelization and remodeling of the tissue. In sum, our findings show that CS/PEO/CO scaffolds can be used as a promising dressing for the treatment of skin wounds.

Abstract
In this study, mixtures based on β-glucans and proteins are extracted from barley, in mild (MA) and high (HA) alkaline conditions, and employed with zinc oxide (ZnO) to prepare bioactive films for wound healing. Composition of extracts and properties of resulting films depend on pH extraction conditions. MA based samples show weak physical interactions among mixture components, whereas in HA films the extent of these interactions is larger. Consequently, their chemico-physical properties are significantly different, as demonstrated by FT-IR, thermal, mechanical and morphological analyses. ZnO with its bound water molecules acts as a slight plasticizer in MA, as shown by the lower Tg and the decrease of elastic modulus. In HA, this effect is evidenced up to ZnO 1%, and above this concentration an increase of strength at break is observed. Finally, MA and HA films show intrinsic antimicrobial properties, enhanced by ZnO, which make them exploitable as wound dressings.

Abstract
The aim of this research was to fabricate active nanocomposite films by incorporation of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs) (3, 6 and 9% w/w) into the chitosan-based films. The NiONPs were synthesized by solution combustion method and the films were prepared by solvent casting method. The formation of new interactions and increasing of films' crystallinity were confirmed by FT-IR and XRD analyses. Uniform dispersion of NiONPs at lower concentrations and their aggregation at level of 9% was confirmed by FE-SEM observations. Water barrier properties, tensile strength, thermal properties and surface hydrophobicity of films enhanced by addition of 6% NiONPs. Photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites was confirmed by absorption of 72% of methyl orange during 270 min under UV irradiation. The nanocomposite films exhibited good antibacterial activity against gram-positive (S. aureus) and gram-negative (S. typhimurium) bacteria. Therefore, the chitosan-NiONPs nanocomposite films could be used for active food packaging applications and photodecolorization purposes.

Abstract
A general and effective strategy was developed for improving simultaneously the mechanical strength and antibacterial performance of biopolymer-based films. The well-dispersed zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were in-situ loaded on non-toxic natural palygorskite (PAL) nanorod to form an antibacterial PAL@ZnO composite nanorod, which can be embedded into chitosan/gelatin (CS/GL) film to produce the composite films with noticeably enhanced mechanical properties and antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria (inhibition zones are 21.82 ± 0.95 mm and 16.36 ± 1.64 mm, respectively). The toughness of films enhances to 35.13 ± 0.95 MPa and the moisture uptake decreases to 23.74 ± 0.02% after embedding 3% and 9% of PAL@ZnO, respectively. In addition, incorporating PAL@ZnO nanorods also significantly enhanced the water resistance, and thermal stability of film. This work provides an alternative way for the development of antibacterial films with potential applications in many fields such as food packing.
