The morphology, self-assembly, and host-guest properties of cellulose nanocrystals surface grafted with cholesterol

Modification and characterization of a novel and fluorine-free cellulose nanofiber with hydrophobic and oleophobic properties

In this study, a brand-new, easy, and environmentally friendly approach for chemically functionalizing 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) to produce modified cellulose nanofiber (octadecylamine-citric acid-CNF) was proposed. Effects of octadecylamine (ODA)/TOCNF mass ratio on the chemical structure, morphology, surface hydrophobicity and oleophobicity were studied. According to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, ODA was successfully grafted onto the TOCNF by simple citric acid (CA) esterification and amidation reactions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that a new rough structure was formed on the ODA-CA-CNF surface. The water contact angle (WCA) and the castor oil contact angle (OCA) of the ODA-CA-CNF reached 139.6° and 130.6°, respectively. The high-grafting-amount ODA-CA-CNF was sprayed onto paper, and the OCA reached 118.4°, which indicated good oil-resistance performance. The low-grafting-amount ODA-CNF was applied in a pH-responsive indicator film, exhibiting a colour change in response to the pH level, which can be applied in smart food packaging. The ODA-CA-CNF with excellent water/oil-resistance properties and fluorine-free properties can replace petrochemical materials and can be used in the fields of fluorine-free oil-proof paper.

Self-assembled materials from cellulose nanocrystals conjugated with a thermotropic liquid crystalline moiety

Manipulating molecular and supramolecular interactions within cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to introduce different levels of assemblies combined with multiple functionalities is required for the development of degradable smart materials from renewable resources. To attain hierarchical structures and stimuli-responsive properties, a new class of liquid crystalline cellulosic hybrid materials is synthesized. Herein, main-chain rigid-rod-like oxidized cellulose (CNC-COOH) is prepared from a Cellulose Whatman filter paper (Cellulose W.P.) by acid hydrolysis and oxidized using 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO). Thermotropic LC molecule, 4-cyano-4'-hydroxybiphenyl with a 12-methylene spacer (CB12-OH) is grafted onto the carboxylic acid group of CNC-COOH via Steglich esterification. The liquid crystalline functionalized CNCs cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-COO-CB12) are readily soluble in DMSO and ionic liquids. The extent of functionalization and structure of CNC-COO-CB12 are confirmed by solution-state ¹H NMR and supported by other characterization techniques. We investigate the interplay of liquid crystalline orientational order of CNCs and cyanobiphenyl (CB12), and the supramolecular hydrogen bonding of CNCs within CNC-COO-CB12 and compare it with CNC-COOH. The introduction of thermotropic CB12 side chains onto rigid-rod CNCs shows the exclusive formation of smectic mesophases from the assemblies of CB12 with the absence of the cholesteric mesophase typically observed from CNC-COOH as verified by temperature-controlled SAXS (T-SAXS). This is further verified by UV-visible and SEM studies that show CNC-COO-CB12 forms smectic domains while CNC-COOH forms a visible light reflecting cholesteric mesophase in dried films. Thus, the interplay of liquid crystalline order of CNCs and CB12 and supramolecular hydrogen bonding of CNCs results in ordered, smectic-mesostructured CNCs for use in stimuli-responsive functional materials.

Improved catalytic properties of Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized on cetyl chloroformate-modified cellulose nanocrystals

The catalytic activity of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) immobilized on modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with different hydrophobicity was investigated using experimental and theoretical approaches. Firstly, the modified CNC were characterized by multi-spectroscopic methods, water contact angle, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Moderately hydrophobic CNC were found to be an optimal support for CALB immobilization. Secondly, model systems contained a CALB molecule and different numbers of modified CNC molecules (CALB@3CNC-C16, CALB@10CNC-C16 and CALB@15CNC-C16) were prepared for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Root-mean-square fluctuation values (0.61-2.61 Å) of lid region were relatively high in CALB@10CNC-C16, indicating that modified CNC with moderate hydrophobicity favored forming a lid-open conformation of CALB. Finally, the esterification of oleic acid catalyzed by the immobilized CALB showed higher conversion (54.68 %) than free CALB (12.98 %). Insights into modified CNC with tunable properties provided by this study may be a potential support for improving the catalytic performance of lipases.

Reactive Cellu-mers-A Novel Approach to Improved Cellulose/Polymer Composites

In this paper, we describe a novel method for preparation of polymer composites with homogeneous dispersion of natural fibers in the polymer matrix. In our approach, Williamson ether synthesis is used to chemically modify cellulose with polymerizable styrene moieties and transform it into a novel multifunctional cellu-mer that can be further crosslinked by copolymerization with styrene. Reactions with model compounds (cellobiose and cellotriose) successfully confirm the viability of the new strategy. The same approach is used to transform commercially available cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) of various sizes: Sigmacell and Technocell™ 40, 90 and 150. The styrene-functionalized cellulose oligomers and CNFs are then mixed with styrene and copolymerized in bulk at 65 °C with 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The resulting composites are in a form of semi-interpenetrating networks (s-IPN), where poly(styrene) chains are either crosslinked with the uniformly dispersed cellulosic component or entangled through the network. Non-crosslinked poly(styrene) (31-41 w%) is extracted with CHCl3 and analyzed by size-exclusion chromatography to estimate the extent of homopolymerization and reveal the mechanism of the whole process. Electron microscopy analyses of the networks show the lack of cellu-mer agglomeration throughout the polymer matrix. The homogeneous distribution of cellulose entities leads to improved thermal and mechanical properties of the poly(styrene) composites compared to the physical mixtures of the same components and linear poly(styrene) of similar molecular mass.

Construction of a novel electrochemical sensor based on biomass material nanocellulose and its detection of acetaminophen

In this work, acidic sulfated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as green carriers, and a novel composite material was synthesized and used to design sensors for paracetamol (AP) detection. There are negatively charged acidic sulfate groups on the surface of CNCs, which can enhance the electrostatic repulsion between nanoparticles, thereby increasing the stability and dispersibility of AgNPs in the system, making them less prone to agglomeration. Cationic pillar[5]arene (CP5) with a strong host–guest effect was used as a stable ligand for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs have good electrical conductivity and large specific surface area, which can significantly increase the peak current. In addition, CP5 has excellent supramolecular recognition performance, which can specifically recognize the guest molecule AP to form an inclusion complex, so that a large number of AP molecules are attached to the electrode surface, which is beneficial to the amplification of electrochemical signals. The prepared sensor is more attractive in terms of sensitivity and recognition performance; the host–guest binding constant was (3.37 ± 0.26) × 10⁴ M⁻¹, which can be obtained with good linearity (R² = 0.996), low detection limit (90 nM, LOD = 3σ/k, S/N = 3) and a wide linear range (0.5–500 μM). The electrochemical sensor showed good performance in quantitative analysis, stability, selectivity, reproducibility, and actual sample detection, providing high feasibility for real-time monitoring of paracetamol; it also provides a new idea for a green sensor.

Polymeric Drug Delivery Systems Bearing Cholesterol Moieties: A Review

This review aims to provide an overview of polymers comprising cholesterol moiety/ies designed to be used in drug delivery. Over the last two decades, there have been many papers published in this field, which are summarized in this review. The primary focus of this article is on the methods of synthesis of polymers bearing cholesterol in the main chain or as side chains. The data related to the composition, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution of polymers are presented. Moreover, other aspects, such as forms of carriers, types of encapsulated drugs, encapsulation efficiency and capacity, are also included.

Graphene Derivatives in Biopolymer-Based Composites for Food Packaging Applications

This review aims to showcase the current use of graphene derivatives, graphene-based nanomaterials in particular, in biopolymer-based composites for food packaging applications. A brief introduction regarding the valuable attributes of available and emergent bioplastic materials is made so that their contributions to the packaging field can be understood. Furthermore, their drawbacks are also disclosed to highlight the benefits that graphene derivatives can bring to bio-based formulations, from physicochemical to mechanical, barrier, and functional properties as antioxidant activity or electrical conductivity. The reported improvements in biopolymer-based composites carried out by graphene derivatives in the last three years are discussed, pointing to their potential for innovative food packaging applications such as electrically conductive food packaging.

Hydrophobized cellulose nanocrystals enhance xanthan and locust bean gum network properties in gels and emulsions

Locust bean/xanthan gum (LBG/XG) synergistic networks have previously been well studied, with evidence that junction zones between the two polymers result in hydrophobic domains. Here we report on the effect of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the rheological properties of the individual gums, the gum networks, and emulsion gels consisting of the gum network and corn oil. We also take advantage of differences in the autofluorescent spectra for each of the components to map their distribution within the gel and emulsion gel systems. Whilst both types of CNC confer thermal stability to the systems, hydrophilic CNCs induce minor changes in rheological properties of synergistic gels and prove to be detrimental to the stability of the emulsion gels. In contrast, hydrophobic CNCs associate with the LBG/XG network, affecting the rheological response. Their inclusion in the emulsion gel system results in smaller, more homogeneously distributed oil droplets with a resultant increase in the storage modulus by an order of magnitude compared to the CNC-free and hydrophilic CNC systems. We conclude that hydrophobic CNCs play a critical role in stabilising LBG/XG network gels and emulsions.

Stimuli-responsive self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs): Structures, functions, and biomedical applications

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have received a significant amount of attention from the researchers. It is used as a nanomaterial for various applications due to its excellent physiochemical properties for the last few decades. Self-assembly is a phenomenon where autonomous reorganization of randomly oriented species occurs elegantly. Self-assembly is responsible for the formation of the hierarchical cholesteric structure of CNCs. This process is highly influenced by several factors, such as the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles, intermolecular forces, and the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. Various conventional experimental designs and molecular dynamics (MD) studies have been applied to determine the possible mechanism of self-assembly in CNCs. Different external factors, like pH, temperature, magnetic/electric fields, vacuum, also influence the self-assembly process in CNCs. Notably, better responses have been observed in CNCs-grafted polymer nanocomposites. These functionalized CNCs with stimuli-responsive self-assembly have immense practical applications in modern biotechnology and medicine. Herein, we have concisely discussed the mechanism of the self-assembled CNCs in the presence of different external factors such as pH, temperature, electric/magnetic fields, and their biomedical applications.
