Review on recent progress in chitosan/chitin-carbonaceous material composites for the adsorption of water pollutants

Spectroscopic and statistical physics elucidation for Cu(II) remediation using magnetic bio adsorbent based on Fe3O4-chitosan-graphene oxide

Efficient harnessing of heavy metal pollution is an urgent environmental task. Herein, magnetic bio adsorbent (MB) based on Fe3O4-chitosan-graphene oxide composite was fabricated via one step co-precipitation for adsorptive remediation of Cu(II). Remediation efficiency was evaluated by batch adsorption, meanwhile adsorption mechanism was elucidated by spectroscopic tests (XPS, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescent emission spectra), statistical physics formalism, isotherm and kinetic fittings. Results show, MB reaches adsorption percent and quantity of 87.61 % and 350.43 mg·g-1 for Cu(II) in 30 min. By virtue of paramagnetism, MB can be readily recovered with a permanent magnet for easy regeneration and cyclic use, thereby retaining adsorption quantity 279.99 mg·g-1 at the fifth cycle. The Freundlich and pseudo second order model satisfactorily describes the adsorption, designating chemical interaction as the rate limiting step. Statistical physics calculation suggests two points. (1) Multi-ionic adsorption mechanism with exothermic, spontaneous and energy lowering feature. (2) Density of adsorption sites increases with temperature, resulting in improved adsorption capacity. Spectroscopic analysis confirms the involvement of CO, CO, -NH2 in Cu(II) uptake via electron donation. These explorations contribute with novel theoretical illumination for understanding both the thermodynamic feature and atomic scale mechanism of common pollutants adsorption by bio adsorbent like Fe3O4-chitosan-graphene oxide.

Materials based on biodegradable polymers chitosan/gelatin: a review of potential applications

Increased mass manufacturing and the pervasive use of plastics in many facets of daily life have had detrimental effects on the environment. As a result, these worries heighten the possibility of climate change due to the carbon dioxide emissions from burning conventional, non-biodegradable polymers. Accordingly, biodegradable gelatin and chitosan polymers are being created as a sustainable substitute for non-biodegradable polymeric materials in various applications. Chitosan is the only naturally occurring cationic alkaline polysaccharide, a well-known edible polymer derived from chitin. The biological activities of chitosan, such as its antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial qualities, have recently piqued the interest of researchers. Similarly, gelatin is a naturally occurring polymer derived from the hydrolytic breakdown of collagen protein and offers various medicinal advantages owing to its unique amino acid composition. In this review, we present an overview of recent studies focusing on applying chitosan and gelatin polymers in various fields. These include using gelatin and chitosan as food packaging, antioxidants and antimicrobial properties, properties encapsulating biologically active substances, tissue engineering, microencapsulation technology, water treatment, and drug delivery. This review emphasizes the significance of investigating sustainable options for non-biodegradable plastics. It showcases the diverse uses of gelatin and chitosan polymers in tackling environmental issues and driving progress across different industries.

The development of multifunctional materials for water pollution remediation using pollen and sporopollenin

Pollen is a promising material for water treatment owing to its renewable nature, abundant sources, and vast reserves. The natural polymer sporopollenin, found within pollen exine, possesses a distinctive layered porous structure, mechanical strength, and stable chemical properties, which can be utilized to prepare sporopollenin exine capsules (SECs). Leveraging these attributes, pollen or SECs can be used to develop water pollution remediation materials. In this review, the structure of pollen is first introduced, followed by the categorization of various methods for extracting SECs. Then, the functional expansion of pollen adsorbents, with an emphasis on their recyclability, reusability, and visual sensing capabilities, as opposed to mere functional group modification, is discussed. Furthermore, the progress made in utilizing pollen as a biological template for synthesizing catalysts is summarized. Intriguingly, pollen can also be engineered into self-propelled micromotors, enhancing its potential application in adsorption and catalysis. Finally, the challenges associated with the application of pollen in water pollution treatment are discussed. These challenges include the selection of environmentally friendly, non-toxic reagents in synthesizing pollen water remediation products and the large-scale application after synthesis. Moreover, the multifunctional synthesis and application of different water remediation products are prospected.

Constructing the synergistic effects of chitosan and ionic liquid on SPEEK polymer for efficient adsorption of crystal violet dye

In the study, a novel chitosan biopolymer and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid (IL)-incorporated sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite (Ch-IL@SPEEK) was prepared for adsorption of cationic crystal violet (CV) dye. The proposed composite was well characterized by several techniques. CV adsorption performance was examined via batch studies by varying various variables involving adsorbent dosage, contact time pH and temperature. The isotherm results were demonstrated the adsorption characters of the processes were Langmuirian. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 77.66 mg g-1 for the composite which was significantly higher than SPEEK (qmax = 45.36 mg g-1). The determined equilibrium time of the operated system was 360 min and the kinetic model was assessed as Elovich. At low pHs the protonated surface groups repelled the positively charged CV and the adsorption rate increased with increasing pH. The process is spontaneous and favorable as it proceeds via endothermic interactions. Furthermore, even at the end of 5 successful adsorption cycles, 77.86 % CV removal was obtained. Remarkable efficiencies were also achieved in the removal performance of different organic pollutants. Based on the reported results, Ch-IL@SPEEK composite were exhibited as an impressive adsorbent material for adsorption processes.

Nanowire Array Breath Acetone Sensor for Diabetes Monitoring

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes characterized by the accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood. Breath acetone, a ketone, directly correlates with blood ketones. Therefore, monitoring breath acetone can significantly enhance the safety and efficacy of diabetes care. In this work, the design and fabrication of an InP/Pt/chitosan nanowire array-based chemiresistive acetone sensor is reported. By incorporation of chitosan as a surface-functional layer and a Pt Schottky contact for efficient charge transfer processes and photovoltaic effect, self-powered, highly selective acetone sensing is achieved. The sensor has exhibited an ultra-wide acetone detection range from sub-ppb to >100 000 ppm level at room temperature, covering those in the exhaled breath from healthy individuals (300-800 ppb) to people at high risk of DKA (>75 ppm). The nanowire sensor has also been successfully integrated into a handheld breath testing prototype, the Ketowhistle, which can successfully detect different ranges of acetone concentrations in simulated breath samples. The Ketowhistle demonstrates the immediate potential for non-invasive ketone monitoring for people living with diabetes, in particular for DKA prevention.

Removal of doxorubicin hydrochloride and crystal violet from aqueous solutions using spray-dried niobium oxide coated with chitosan-activated carbon: Experimental and DFT calculations

Spray-dried niobium oxide coated with chitosan-activated carbon (NIC) was synthesized and used to remove doxorubicin hydrochloride and crystal violet from aqueous solutions under different parameters such as solution pH (2, 4, 6, and 8), contact time (1 to 9 h), initial concentration (20 to 200 mg L-1), and competing ions (0.1 M of CaCl2 and NaCl). The addition of 5 % chitosan-activated carbon to the matrix of niobium oxide slightly increased the specific surface area from 26 to 30 m2 g-1, with the introduction of a carboxylic functional group. This led to an increase in the amount of adsorbed doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOH) from 30 to 44 mg g-1 and that of crystal violet (CV) from 15 to 32 mg g-1 from the initial respective 100 mg L-1 at pH 8. The data from the concentration study fitted into Liu isotherm having adsorption capacity of 128 and 57 mg g-1 for DOH and CV respectively, while pseudo first and second order are more suitable for adsorption kinetics. The additional functional groups on the IR spectrum of NIC after the adsorption of DOH and CV confirmed the interaction between NIC and the adsorbates' molecules. The mechanism of adsorption was supported by DFT calculations.

Activated carbon and their nanocomposites derived from vegetable and fruit residues for water treatment

Water pollution remains a pressing environmental issue, with diverse pollutants such as heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and aromatic hydrocarbon compounds posing a significant threat to clean water access. Historically, biomass-derived activated carbons (ACs) have served as effective adsorbents for water treatment, owing to their inherent porosity and expansive surface area. Nanocomposites have emerged as a means to enhance the absorption properties of ACs, surpassing conventional AC performance. Biomass-based activated carbon nanocomposites (ACNCs) hold promise due to their high surface area and cost-effectiveness. This review explores recent advancements in biomass-based ACNCs, emphasizing their remarkable adsorption efficiencies and paving the way for future research in developing efficient and affordable ACNCs. Leveraging real-time communication for ACNC applications presents a viable approach to addressing cost concerns.

A critical and comprehensive review of the current status of 17β-estradiol hormone remediation through adsorption technology

Even at low concentrations, steroid hormones pose a significant threat to ecosystem health and are classified as micropollutants. Among these, 17β-estradiol (molecular formula: C18H24O2; pKa = 10.46; Log Kow = 4.01; solubility in water = 3.90 mg L-1 at 27 °C; molecular weight: 272.4 g mol-1) is extensively studied as an endocrine disruptor due to its release through natural pathways and widespread use in conventional medicine. 17β-estradiol (E2) is emitted by various sources, such as animal and human excretions, hospital and veterinary clinic effluents, and treatment plants. In aquatic biota, it can cause issues ranging from the feminization of males to inhibiting plant growth. This review aims to identify technologies for remediating E2 in water, revealing that materials like graphene oxides, nanocomposites, and carbonaceous materials are commonly used for adsorption. The pH of the medium, especially in acidic to neutral conditions, affects efficiency, and ambient temperature (298 K) supports the process. The Langmuir and Freundlich models aptly describe isothermal studies, with interactions being of a low-energy, physical nature. Adsorption faces limitations when other ions coexist in the solution. Hybrid treatments exhibit high removal efficiency. To mitigate global E2 pollution, establishing national and international standards with detailed guidelines for advanced treatment systems is crucial. Despite significant advancements in optimizing technologies by the scientific community, there remains a considerable gap in their societal application, primarily due to economic and sustainable factors. Therefore, further studies are necessary, including conducting batch experiments with these adsorbents for large-scale treatment along with economic analyses of the production process.

Cellulose acetate-based electrospun nanofiber aerogel with excellent resilience and hydrophobicity for efficient removal of drug residues and oil contaminations from wastewater

Cellulose acetate (CA)-based electrospun nanofiber aerogel (ENA) has drawn extensive attention for wastewater remediation due to its unique separation, inherent porosity and biodegradability. However, the low mechanical strength, poor durability, and limited adsorption ability hinder its further applications. We herein propose using silane-modified ENA, namely T-CA@Si@ZIF-67 (T-ENA), with enhanced resilience, hydrophobicity, durability and hetero-catalysis to remediate a complex wastewater containing oil and drug residues. The robust T-ENA was fabricated by pre-doping tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and ligand in its spinning precursors, followed by in-situ anchoring of porous ZIF-67 on the electrospun nanofibers (ENFs) via seeding method before freeze-drying and thermal curing (T). Results show that the T-ENA displays enhanced mechanical stability/resilience and hydrophobicity without compromise of its high porosity (>98 %) and low density (10 mg/cm3) due to the silane cross-linking. As a result, the hydrophobic T-ENA shows over 99 % separation efficiency towards different oil-water solutions. Meanwhile, thanks to the enhanced adsorption-catalytic ability and the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) from the porous ZIF-67, fast degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) residue in the wastewater can be achieved within 20 min. This work might provide a novel strategy for developing CA aerogels to remove organic pollutants.

Preparation of nanochitin using deep eutectic solvents

Chitin is an abundant and renewable non-wood biopolymer. Nanochitin is formed by the assembly of chitin molecules, which has the advantages of large tensile strength, high specific surface area, and biodegradability, so it has been widely used. However, the traditional methods of preparing nanochitin have many drawbacks. As the new generation of green solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been successfully applied in the fields of chitin dissolution, extraction, and nanochitin preparation. In this review, the relevant knowledge of chitin, nanochitin, and DESs was first introduced. Then, the application status of DESs in the fields of chitin was summarized, with a focus on the preparation of nanochitin using DESs. In conclusion, this review provided a comprehensive analysis of the published literature and proposed insights and development trends in the field of preparation of nanochitin using DESs, aiming to provide guidance and assistance for future researchers.

Adsorptive removal of anthracene from water by biochar derived amphiphilic carbon dots decorated with chitosan

Anthracene belongs to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) consisting of benzene rings, unusually highly stable through more π-electrons and localized π-bond in entire rings. Aqueous-phase anthracene adsorption using carbon-based materials such as biochar is ineffective. In this paper, carbon dots (CDs) derived from the acid treatment of coconut shell biochar (CDs/MCSB) decorated with chitosan (CS) are successfully synthesized and applied for anthracene removal from aqueous solutions. The h-CDs/MCSB exhibited fast adsorption of anthracene with significant sorption capacity (Qmax = 49.26 mg g-1) with 95 % removal efficiency at 60 min. The study suggested chemisorption dominated monolayer anthracene adsorption onto h-CDs/MCSB, where a significant role was played by ion-exchange. Density Functional Theory (DFT) suggested the anthracene adsorption was dominated by the electrostatic interactions and delocalized electron, induced by higher polarizability of functional groups on the surface of hybrid CDs/MCSB assisted by chitosan (h-CDs/MCSB). In addition, the aromatic structure of CDs/MCSB and high polarizability of functional groups provided the strong interactions between benzene rings of anthracene and hybrid adsorbent-assisted multiple π-bond through delocalized π-bond and polarization-induced H-bond interactions. The presence of carboxylic and sulfonic groups on the CDs/MCSB surface also contributed to the effective adsorption of anthracene was confirmed by the fluorescence spectra. The results showed that the hybrid adsorbent was an effective material for removing PAHs, usually difficult to remove from water owing to the presence of benzene rings in their structures. Further, consistency in the DFT results suggested the outstanding binding capacity with the anthracene molecules with h-CDs/MCSB.

Orientation Growth of N-Doped and Iron-Based Metal-Organic Framework and Its Application for Removal of Cr(VI) in Wastewater

A series of NH2-functionalized nano-sized magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared in this study for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. It was observed that not only the morphological, i.e., orientation growth of N-doped and iron-based metal-organic frameworks, but also the adsorption of magnetic MOFs is largely related to the used amount of ammonium hydroxide in preparation. For example, with increasing amounts of ammonium hydroxide used in preparation, the morphology of magnetic MOFs changed from spherical to cube and triangular cone. Moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity of spherical-magnetic MOFs, cubic-magnetic MOFs and triangular cone-magnetic MOFs could be up to 204.08 mg/g, 232.56 mg/g and 270.27 mg/g, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption process of magnetic MOFs for Cr(VI) was consistent with the pseudo-second-order rate equation (R2 = 1) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 > 0.99). Therefore, magnetic MOFs developed in this work offered a viable option for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Statistically Analyzed Heavy Metal Removal Efficiency of Silica-Coated Cu0.50Mg0.50Fe2O4 Magnetic Adsorbent for Wastewater Treatment

Even low concentrations of pollutants in water, particularly heavy metals, can significantly affect the ecosystem and human health. Adsorption has been determined to be one of the most effective techniques of removing pollution from wastewater among the various strategies. To remove heavy metals such as Zn2+ and Pb2+, we prepared a silica-coated CuMgFe2O4 magnetic adsorbent using sol-gel method and tested it for wastewater treatment. X-ray diffraction investigation validated the creation of cubic spinel structure, while morphological analysis showed that silica coating reduces the particle size but boosts the surface roughness of the nanoparticles and also reduces the agglomeration between particles. UV-visible spectroscopy indicates a rise in bandgap and magnetic characteristics analysis indicates low values of magnetization due to silica coating. The kinetic and isotherm parameters for heavy metal ions adsorption onto silica-coated Cu0.50Mg0.50Fe2O4 nanoparticles are calculated by applying pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Langmuir and Freundlich models. Adsorption kinetics revealed that the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models are the best fit to explain adsorption kinetics. Synthesized adsorbent revealed 92% and 97% removal efficiencies for Zn2+ and Pb2+ ions, respectively.

Biogenic adsorbents for removal of drugs and dyes: A comprehensive review on properties, modification and applications

This comprehensive review explores the potential and versatility of biogenic materials as sustainable and environmentally benign alternatives to conventional adsorbents for the removal of drugs and dyes. Biogenic adsorbents derived from plants, animals, microorganisms, algae and biopolymers have bioactive compounds that interact with functional groups of pollutants, resulting in their binding with the sorbent. These materials can be modified mechanically, thermally and chemically to enhance their adsorption properties. Biogenic hybrid composites, which integrate the characteristics of more than one material, have also been fabricated. Additionally, microorganisms and algae are analyzed for their ability to uptake pollutants. Various influential factors that contribute to the adsorption process are also discussed. The challenge, limitations and future prospects for research are reviewed and bridging gap between large scale application and laboratory scale. This comprehensive review, involves a combination of various biogenic adsorbents, going beyond the existing literature where typically only specific adsorbents are reported. The review also covers the isotherms, kinetics, and desorption studies of biogenic adsorbents, providing an improved framework for their effective use in removing pharmaceuticals and dyes from wastewater.

Adsorption of Rose Bengal dye from waste water onto modified biomass

Herein, adsorption of Rose Bengal dye (RB) from aqueous solution was investigated. Nano raw orange peel (OP) activated carbon (AC) coated with nano chitosan (Cs) to obtain nano chitosan/activated carbon (AC/Cs) composite which cross-linked with functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) to create a novel composite (AC/Cs/MWCNTs) with high surface area (1923 m2/g). The examined parameters such as concentration (1-7 ppm), pH (6.5-9.5) and temperature (295-323 K) were traversed. The maximum removal efficiency was at pH 6.5, increased from 70.4% for nano OP to 94.7% for AC/Cs/MWCNTs nano composite. Langmuir isotherm model was the best fitting to acquired data (R2 ≥ 0.99). Also, the adsorption of RB matched with pseudo-second order model, t0.5 results for pseudo-second order was 4.4672 for nano OP and 1.2813 for AC/Cs/MWCNTs at 303 K. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of RB dye is exothermic and spontaneous due to the negative value of ΔG and ΔH.

Multifunctional polysaccharide structure as green adsorbent for efficient removal and preconcentration of chlorophenols from the aqueous medium: experimental and modeling approaches

The growing concerns about water pollution have prompted researchers to explore new materials for remediating and purifying it. In recent years, there has been a focus on polysaccharides as eco-friendly polymers that exhibit high efficiency in removing chlorophenols from waste water. This study aims to develop a trifunctional polysaccharide structure using a biodegradable matrix. The chitosan/alginate-polyethyleneimine-phenyl-phosphonamidic acid (CHIT/ALG-PEIPPAA) matrix was employed for removing chlorophenols from water. The study carefully examined the impact of various physicochemical parameters such as pH, reaction time, chlorophenols concentration, temperature, and ionic strength to determine the optimal conditions for the adsorption process. Several techniques were used to confirm the morphology, physicochemical properties, structure, and functionalization of the polymer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed a heterogeneous morphology with agglomerates of different particle sizes, ranging from a few micrometers with irregular shapes. The FTIR spectrum and zeta potential characterization indicated the presence of hydrophilic groups and a highly positive charge (around 31.4 mV) on the surface of the CHIT/ALG-PEIPPAA adsorbent. The optimal pH for chlorophenols removal was found to be approximately 4.4. The kinetic data supported the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which accurately described the adsorption behavior of both chlorophenol molecules. The fitting of the isotherm analysis revealed that the Langmuir model provided a better representation of the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacities for 4-chlorophenol and 2,4-chlorophenol were approximately 118 mg.g-1 and 249 mg.g-1, respectively. The calculated thermodynamic functions confirmed an exothermic and spontaneous adsorption process for chlorophenols, with ∆H values of -6.98 kJ.mol-1 and -2.74 kJ.mol-1 for 4-chlorophenol and 2,4-chlorophenol, respectively. The regeneration process of the CHIT/ALG-PEIPPAA adsorbent showed higher efficacy in the presence of hydrochloric acid (2.0 mol.L-1), resulting in up to 91% desorption of chlorophenols. The CHIT/ALG-PEIPPAA adsorbent demonstrated good reusability after regeneration, with only a slight decrease in extraction efficiency: 34.63% for 4-chlorophenol and 79.03% for 2,4-chlorophenol, under the same optimal conditions as the initial adsorption cycle.

One-Pot Chitin Conversion to High-Activity Antifungal N,N-Dimethyl Chitosan Oligosaccharides

Chitosan oligosaccharide and its derivatives are known for their diverse biological activities. In this study, we communicate a convenient one-pot synthesis of N,N-dimethyl chitosan oligosaccharide (DMCOS) from chitin via acid-catalyzed tandem depolymerization-deacetylation-N-methylation pathway using formaldehyde as the methylation reagent. The synthesis protocol offers 77 % DMCOS that features a high degree of deacetylation, a high degree of methylation, and a low average molecular weight. Compared to chitosan, DMCOS exhibits superior antifungal activity against Candida species. Mechanism study reveals a previously non-reported hydroxyl group-assisted effect that facilitates the reductive amination reaction under strong acidic conditions. Overall, our findings demonstrate the feasibility of direct synthesis of DMCOS from chitin, highlighting its potential use in anti-fungal applications.

Insights into the relationships of modifying methods, structure, functional properties and applications of chitin: A review

Chitin as the second plentiful polysaccharide has arouse widely attention due to its remarkable availability and biocompatibility. While the strong inter/intra molecular hydrogen bonds and crystallinity severely restrict its applications. Recently, multiple emerging technologies are increasingly used to modify chitin structure for the sake of obtaining excellent functional properties, as well as broadening the corresponding applications. Firstly, this review systematically outlines the features of single and combined methods for chitin modification. Then, the impacts of various modifying methods on the structural characteristics of chitin, including molecular weight, degree of acetylation and functional groups, are further summarized. In addition, the effects of these structural characteristics on the functional properties as well as its potential related applications are illustrated. The conclusion of this review provides better understanding of the relationships among the modifying methods, structure, properties and applications, contributing to chitin modification for the targeted purpose in the future study.

Algal sorbents and prospects for their application in the sustainable recovery of rare earth elements from E-waste

Efficient and sustainable secondary sourcing of Rare-Earth Elements (REE) is essential to counter supply bottlenecks and the impacts associated with primary mining. Recycled electronic waste (E-waste) is considered a promising REE source and hydrometallurgical methods followed by chemical separation techniques (usually solvent extraction) have been successfully applied to these wastes with high REE yields. However, the generation of acidic and organic waste streams is considered unsustainable and has led to the search for "greener" approaches. Sorption-based technologies using biomass such as bacteria, fungi and algae have been developed to sustainably recover REE from e-waste. Algae sorbents in particular have experienced growing research interest in recent years. Despite its high potential, sorption efficiency is strongly influenced by sorbent-specific parameters such as biomass type and state (fresh/dried, pre-treatment, functionalization) as well as solution parameters such as pH, REE concentration, and matrix complexity (ionic strength and competing ions). This review highlights differences in experimental conditions among published algal-based REE sorption studies and their impact on sorption efficiency. Since research into algal sorbents for REE recovery from real wastes is still in its infancy, aspects such as the economic viability of a realistic application are still unexplored. However, it has been proposed to integrate REE recovery into an algal biorefinery concept to increase the economics of the process (by providing a range of additional products), but also in the prospect of achieving carbon neutrality (as large-scale algae cultivation can act as a CO₂ sink).

Chitin and crawfish shell biochar composite decreased heavy metal bioavailability and shifted rhizosphere bacterial community in an arsenic/lead co-contaminated soil

Sustainable management of ever-increasing organic biowaste and arable soil contamination by potentially toxic elements are of concern from both environmental and agricultural perspectives. To tackle the waste issue of crawfish shells and simultaneously minimize the threat of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) to human health, a pot trial was conducted using chitin (CT), crawfish shell biochar (CSB), crawfish shell powder (CSP), and CT-CSB composite to compare their remediation efficiencies in As/Pb co-contaminated soil. Results demonstrated that addition of all amendments decreased Pb bioavailability, with the greatest effect observed for the CT-CSB treatment. Application of CSP and CSB increased the soil available As concentration, while significant decreases were observed in the CT and CT-CSB treatments. Meanwhile, CT addition was the most effective in enhancing the soil enzyme activities including acid phosphatase, α-glucosidase, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, and cellobiohydrolase, whereas CSB-containing treatments suppressed the activities of most enzymes. The amendments altered the bacterial abundance and composition in soil. For instance, compared to the control, all treatments increased Chitinophagaceae abundance by 2.6-4.7%. The relative abundance of Comamonadaceae decreased by 1.6% in the CSB treatment, while 2.1% increase of Comamonadaceae was noted in the CT-CSB treatment. Redundancy and correlation analyses (at the family level) indicated that the changes in bacterial community structure were linked to bulk density, water content, and As/Pb availability of soils. Partial least squares path modeling further indicated that soil chemical property (i.e., pH, dissolved organic carbon, and cation exchange capacity) was the strongest predictor of As/Pb availability in soils following amendment application. Overall, CT-CSB could be a potentially effective amendment for simultaneously immobilizing As and Pb and restoring soil ecological functions in contaminated arable soils.

A Thorough Examination of the Solution Conditions and the Use of Carbon Nanoparticles Made from Commercial Mesquite Charcoal as a Successful Sorbent for Water Remediation

Water pollution has invaded seas, rivers, and tap water worldwide. This work employed commercial Mesquite charcoal as a low-cost precursor for fabricating Mesquite carbon nanoparticles (MUCNPs) using a ball-milling process. The scanning electron energy-dispersive microscopy results for MUCNPs revealed a particle size range of 52.4-75.0 nm. The particles were composed mainly of carbon with trace amounts of aluminum, potassium, calcium, titanium, and zinc. The X-ray diffraction peaks at 26.76 and 43.28 2θ° ascribed to the (002) and (100) planes indicated a crystalized graphite phase. Furthermore, the lack of FT-IR vibrations above 3000 cm^-1 showed that the MUCNPs were not functionalized. The MUCNPs' pore diameter, volume, and surface area were 114.5 Ǻ, 0.363 cm³ g^-1, and 113.45 m² g^-1. The batch technique was utilized to investigate MUCNPs' effectiveness in removing chlorohexidine gluconate (CHDNG) from water, which took 90 min to achieve equilibrium and had an adsorption capacity of 65.8 mg g^-1. The adsorption of CHDNG followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, with the rate-limiting step being diffusion in the liquid film. The Langmuir isotherm dominated the CHDNG adsorption on the MUCNPs with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. The thermodynamic studies revealed that CHDNG adsorption onto the MUCNPs was exothermic and favorable, and its spontaneity increased inversely with CHDNG concentration. The ball-milling-made MUCNPs demonstrated consistent efficiency through regeneration-reuse cycles.

Preparation of metal organic frameworks modified chitosan composite with high capacity for Hg(II) adsorption

In this study, a novel modified chitosan composite adsorbent (UNCS) was prepared by crosslinking between chitosan and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) material UiO-66-NH₂ using epichlorohydrin as crosslinker. The influence of the prepared conditions was investigated. The structure and morphology of the composite were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA, BET and zeta potential analysis. Effects of different variables for adsorption of Hg(II) on this adsorbent were explored. The kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 2 h. The adsorption was mainly controlled by chemical process. Adsorption isothermal studies illustrated that the adsorption fitted Langmuir isotherm model, implying the homogeneous adsorption on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbent exhibited high uptake and the maximum capacity from Langmuir model could reach 896.8 mg g^-1 at pH 6. Thermodynamic studies showed the spontaneous nature and exothermic nature of the adsorption process. Additionally, the removal of Hg(II) on UNCS could achieve over 90 %. The adsorption-desorption cycled experiments indicated the appropriate reusability of the adsorbent. Hence, this adsorbent would be promising for the removal of Hg(II) from wastewater.

Bibliometric analysis of chitosan research for wastewater treatment: a review

Wastewater has negative impacts on the environment, such as destroying aquatic ecosystems and creating a shortage of clean water sources for consumption. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of chitosan to better understand the evolution in degrading various pollutants as a wastewater treatment research limited only by photocatalyst system published in 2001-2021. The number of publications analyzed a total of 456 documents, which was conducted from the Scopus database. All data in this paper was visualized by using open-source software, VOSviewer and Tableau, to perform bibliometric analysis and scientific mapping. The reason for choosing chitosan is its ability to degrade various pollutants with high adsorption performance (from various sources: degradation Congo red 98.4%, methylene blue 99.36%, rhodamine B 95%, and Cd(II) 94%), non-toxicity, biodegradability, and abundantly available sources in nature. The analysis results show that the highest number of publications in 2016 was 66, and the highest number of citations was 2258. The network of keywords and innovations for wastewater treatment is USA and China as the most productive countries with many cooperative relations. This paper helps scholars understand the evolution of composite chitosan-based photocatalyst systems as research on wastewater treatment from a bibliometric point of view and inspires them to develop new efficient methods in synthesizing chitosan from fish by-products (waste) with high adsorption efficiency for various type of waste.

TiO2-Modified Montmorillonite-Supported Porous Carbon-Immobilized Pd Species Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Sonogashira Reactions

In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO₂ was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO₂-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO₂-MMT/PCN@Pd⁰ nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO₂ as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO₂-MMT₈₀/PCN₂₀@Pd⁰ showed a high surface area of 108.9 m²/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59-99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid-solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Porous Materials for Water Purification

Water pollution is a growing threat to humanity due to the pervasiveness of contaminants in water bodies. Significant efforts have been made to separate these hazardous components to purify polluted water through various methods. However, conventional remediation methods suffer from limitations such as low uptake capacity or selectivity, and current water quality standards cannot be met. Recently, advanced porous materials (APMs) have shown promise in improved segregation of contaminants compared to traditional porous materials in uptake capacity and selectivity. These materials feature merits of high surface area and versatile functionality, rendering them ideal platforms for the design of novel adsorbents. This Review summarizes the development and employment of APMs in a variety of water treatments accompanied by assessments of task-specific adsorption performance. Finally, we discuss our perspectives on future opportunities for APMs in water purification.

Adsorptive removal of anionic azo dye by Al3+-modified magnetic biochar obtained from low pyrolysis temperatures of chitosan

Magnetic γ-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@chitosan-derived biochar (m-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@CB) was prepared by introducing magnetic maghemite (γ-Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles and aluminum sulfate [Al₂(SO₄)₃] into chitosan-derived biochar (CB) obtained at low pyrolysis temperatures. m-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@CB was used to remove typical anionic azo dye (Congo red, CR). Effects of initial CR concentration, contact time, initial pH value, background electrolytes, and temperature on CR adsorption by m-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@CB were studied. Compared with magnetic chitosan-derived biochar (m-Fe₂O₃@CB), m-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@CB exhibited excellent performance for a wider range of pH values (pH 1-7) and in the presence of background electrolyte. The introduction of Al³⁺ is an effective method for improving the properties of magnetic chitosan-derived biochar. High CR adsorption capacity (636.94 mg g^-1) of m-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@CB could result from collaborative effect of flocculation/coagulation and electrostatic attraction. These results demonstrated that m-Fe₂O₃/Al³⁺@CB is a potential adsorbent for effective removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution due to its high adsorption capacity and convenient magnetic recovery and stronger anti-interference ability against coexisting anions in wastewater.

Investigation of Cross-Linked Chitosan-Based Membranes as Potential Adsorbents for the Removal of Cu2+ Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Rapid industrialization has led to huge amounts of organic pollutants and toxic heavy metals into aquatic environment. Among the different strategies explored, adsorption remains until the most convenient process for water remediation. In the present work, novel cross-linked chitosan-based membranes were elaborated as potential adsorbents of Cu²⁺ ions, using as cross-linking agent a random water-soluble copolymer P(DMAM-co-GMA) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM). Cross-linked polymeric membranes were prepared through casting aqueous solutions of mixtures of P(DMAM-co-GMA) and chitosan hydrochloride, followed by thermal treatment at 120 °C. After deprotonation, the membranes were further explored as potential adsorbents of Cu²⁺ ions from aqueous CuSO₄ solution. The successful complexation of copper ions with unprotonated chitosan was verified visually through the color change of the membranes and quantified through UV-vis spectroscopy. Cross-linked membranes based on unprotonated chitosan adsorb Cu²⁺ ions efficiently and decrease the concentration of Cu²⁺ ions in water to a few ppm. In addition, they can act as simple visual sensors for the detection of Cu²⁺ ions at low concentrations (~0.2 mM). The adsorption kinetics were well-described by a pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion model, while the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model, revealing maximum adsorption capacities in the range of 66-130 mg/g. Finally, it was shown that the membranes can be effectively regenerated using aqueous H₂SO₄ solution and reused.

Performance Enhancement of Kaolin/Chitosan Composite-Based Membranes by Cross-Linking with Sodium Tripolyphosphate: Preparation and Characterization

A new family of environmentally friendly and low-cost membranes based on readily available mineral and polymeric materials has been developed from cast suspensions of kaolin and chitosan using aqueous phase separation and polyethylene glycol as a pore-forming agent. The as-fabricated membranes were further cross-linked with sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) in order to strengthen the properties of the obtained samples. The functional groups determined by FTIR and EDX confirmed that the reaction occurred. A detailed study of the effects of cross-linking time on the physicochemical, surface and permeation properties showed that a 30-minute reaction enabled the composite membrane to be stable in acidic media (up to pH 2) and increased the mechanical strength twofold compared to the non-cross-linked membrane. A similar morphology to that generally observed in polymeric membranes was obtained, with a sponge-like surface overlaying a finger-like through structure. The top layer and cross-section thicknesses of the membranes increased during STPP post-treatment, while the pore size decreased from 160 to 15 nm. At the same time, the molecular weight cut-off and permeance decreased due to the increase in cross-linking density. These results observed in a series of kaolin/chitosan composite membranes showed that STPP reaction can provide control over the separation capability range, from microfiltration to ultrafiltration.

Biosorbent Based on Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Tricarboxi-Cellulose Designed to Retain Organic Dyes from Aqueous Media

Methylene Blue, a cationic dye, was retained from aqueous solutions using a novel biosorbent made of poly(vinyl alcohol) reticulated with tricarboxi-cellulose produced via TEMPO oxidation (OxC25). The study of the Methylene Blue biosorption process was performed with an emphasis on operational parameters that may have an impact on it (such as biosorbent concentration, pH of the aqueous media, and temperature). The current study focused on three areas: (i) the physic-chemical characterization of the biosorbent (scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)); (ii) biosorption data modeling to determine the quantitative characteristic parameters employing three equilibrium isotherms (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich-DR); and (iii) the study of temperature influence. The results of the study showed that the Langmuir model provided a good fit for the experimental data of biosorption, realizing a maximum capacity of 806.45 mg/g at 20 °C. The free energy of biosorption (E) evaluated by the DR equation was in the range of 6.48-10.86 KJ/mol. The values of the thermodynamic parameters indicated an endothermic process because the free Gibbs energy ranged from -9.286 KJ/mol to -2.208 KJ/mol and the enthalpy was approximately -71.686 KJ/mol. The results obtained encourage and motivate the further study of this biosorption process by focusing on its kinetic aspects, establishing the biosorption's controlled steps, identifying the mechanism responsible for the retention of textile dyes presented in moderate concentration in aqueous media, and studying the biosorption process in a dynamic regime with a view to applying it to real systems.

A Critical Review of Snail Shell Material Modification for Applications in Wastewater Treatment

Sea material is becoming increasingly popular and widely used as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment. Snail shell, a low-cost and natural animal waste material, has been shown to have a high calcium content (>99%) and a large potential surface area for the development of sustainable adsorbents. This paper presents a novel synthesis of methods for using snail shell absorbent materials in the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals, textile dyes, and other organic substances. Modified biochar made from snail shells has gained popularity in recent years due to its numerous benefits. This paper discusses and analyzes modification methods, including impregnating with supplements, combining other adsorbents, synthesis of hydroxyapatite, co-precipitation, and the sol-gel method. The analysis of factors influencing adsorption efficiency revealed that pH, contact time, temperature, initial concentration, and adsorbent dose all have a significant impact on the adsorption process. Future research directions are also discussed in this paper as a result of presenting challenges for current snail adsorbents.

Microwave biochar produced with activated carbon catalyst: Characterization and adsorption of heavy metals

Novel microwave biochar derived from wheat straw (WS) using a range of power levels, with activated carbon catalyst as microwave absorber, was produced, characterized and tested as adsorbent of three heavy metals (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Cu²⁺). The microwave biochar with the greatest specific surface area (156.09 m² g^-1) and total pore volume (0.0790 cm³ g^-1) were produced at 600 W (WS600) and 500 W (WS500) power level, respectively. Maximum adsorption capacities of WS500 to Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺ were 139.44 mg g^-1, 52.92 mg g^-1, and 31.25 mg g^-1, respectively. Optimal pH value for heavy metal removal was at range of 5-6, and Pb²⁺ showed the strongest affinity in competitive adsorption experiments. The adsorption data were fitted better by pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, indicating that adsorption process was mainly explained by monolayer adsorption, and chemical adsorption occupied important role. The predominant adsorption mechanisms of heavy metals on microwave pyrolysis biochar included complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., carboxylic acid CO and -OH) and precipitation with carbonate. In addition, reused WS600 maintained 76.17% and 96.07% of their initial adsorption capacity for Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively. These results suggest that microwave biochar produced with activated carbon catalyst has excellent potential for efficient use in the removal of heavy metals from waste water.

Nanochitin and Nanochitosan: Chitin Nanostructure Engineering with Multiscale Properties for Biomedical and Environmental Applications

Nanochitin and nanochitosan (with random-copolymer-based multiscale architectures of glucosamine and N-acetylglucosamine units) have recently attracted immense attention for the development of green, sustainable, and advanced functional materials. Nanochitin and nanochitosan are multiscale materials from small oligomers, rod-shaped nanocrystals, longer nanofibers, to hierarchical assemblies of nanofibers. Various physical properties of chitin and chitosan depend on their molecular- and nanostructures; translational research has utilized them for a wide range of applications (biomedical, industrial, environmental, and so on). Instead of reviewing the entire extensive literature on chitin and chitosan, here, recent developments in multiscale-dependent material properties and their applications are highlighted; immune, medical, reinforcing, adhesive, green electrochemical materials, biological scaffolds, and sustainable food packaging are discussed considering the size, shape, and assembly of chitin nanostructures. In summary, new perspectives for the development of sustainable advanced functional materials based on nanochitin and nanochitosan by understanding and engineering their multiscale properties are described.

3D Hierarchical Porous and N-Doped Carbonized Microspheres Derived from Chitin for Remarkable Adsorption of Congo Red in Aqueous Solution

A novel adsorbent of N-doped carbonized microspheres were developed from chitin (N-doped CM-chitin) for adsorption of Congo red (CR). The N-doped CM-chitin showed spherical shape and consisted of carbon nanofibers with 3D hierarchical architecture. There were many micro/nano-pores existing in N-doped CM-chitin with high surface area (455.703 m² g^-1). The N element was uniformly distributed on the carbon nanofibers and formed with oxidize-N graphitic-N, pyrrolic-N, and pyridinic-N. The N-doped CM-chitin showed excellent adsorption capability for CR and the maximum adsorption amount was approximate 954.47 mg g^-1. The π-π/n-π interaction, hydrogen-bond interactions, and pore filling adsorption might be the adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption of N-doped CM-chitin was considered as a spontaneous endothermic adsorption process, and which well conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. The N-doped CM-chitin exhibited an effective adsorption performance for dynamic CR water with good reusability. Therefore, this work provides new insights into the fabrication of a novel N-doped adsorbent from low-cost and waste biomasses.

Gelatin and Chitosan as Meat By-Products and Their Recent Applications

Meat by-products such as bones, skin, horns, hooves, feet, skull, etc., are produced from slaughtered mammals. Innovative solutions are very important to achieving sustainability and obtaining the added value of meat by-products with the least impact on the environment. Gelatin, which is obtained from products high in collagen, such as dried skin and bones, is used in food processing, and pharmaceuticals. Chitosan is derived from chitin and is well recognized as an edible polymer. It is a natural product that is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Recently, chitosan has attracted researchers' interests due to its biological activities, including antimicrobial, antitumor, and antioxidant properties. In this review, article, we highlighted the recent available information on the application of gelatin and chitosan as antioxidants, antimicrobials, food edible coating, enzyme immobilization, biologically active compound encapsulation, water treatment, and cancer diagnosis.

Fishery waste valorization: Sulfated ZrO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst for chitin and chitosan depolymerization

Chitin and chitosan are abundant unique sources of biologically-fixed nitrogen mainly derived from residues of the fishery productive chain. Their high potential as nitrogen-based highly added-value platform molecules is still largely unexploited and a catalytic way for their valorization would be strongly desirable within a biorefinery concept. Here we report our results obtained with a series of heterogeneous catalysts in the depolymerization of chitosan and chitin to acetylglucosamine. Copper catalysts supported on SiO2, SiO2–Al2O3, SiO2-ZrO2, ZrO2 and the corresponding bare oxides/mixed oxides were tested, together with a sulfated zirconia system (ZrO2-SO3H) that revealed to be extremely selective towards glucosamine, both for chitosan and chitin, thus giving pretty high yields with respect to the values reported so far (44% and 21%, respectively). The use of a heterogeneous catalyst alone, without the need of any additives or the combination with a mineral acid, makes these results remarkable.

Fabrication of poly(maleic acid)-grafted cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite nanospheres for ultra-high adsorption of anionic acid yellow-17 and cationic brilliant green dyes in single and binary systems

In this contribution, poly(maleic acid)-grafted cross-linked chitosan/montmorillonite composite nanospheres (PMAL-CTS/MMT) were synthesized via a facile approach for adsorption of organic dyes. The adsorption capacity of PMAL-CTS/MMT towards anionic acid yellow-17 (AY17) and cationic brilliant green (BG) was compared to PMAL-CTS, CTS/MMT, and MMT to emphasize the role of surface functional groups introduced by poly(maleic acid) and montmorillonite. Interestingly, the adsorption efficiency of PMAL-CTS/MMT nanocomposite towards both dyes in the single and binary systems was extremely high due to plenty of functional groups. The affinity of PMAL-CTS/MMT towards cationic and anionic dyes resulted from the feasible modulation of the surface charges as a function of the solution pH. The PMAL-CTS/MMT nanocomposite exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 518 and 1910 mg g^-1 for AY17 and BG, respectively, which is higher than most of the adsorbents reported in recent literature studies. The proposed mechanism based on the characterization of PMAL-CTS/MMT after the adsorption highlighted that the adsorption is mainly controlled by electrostatic interaction, π - π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. More importantly, the PMAL-CTS/MMT nanocomposite was successfully applied to separate the AY17 and BG dyes from real-life aquatic environments. Collectively, the simple fabrication and superior adsorption performance reveal that PMAL-CTS/MMT has the potential to treat concomitant organic dyes effectively.

Chitosan-Modified Biochars to Advance Research on Heavy Metal Ion Removal: Roles, Mechanism and Perspectives

The chitosan-modified biochars BC-CS 1-1, BC-CS 2-1 and BC-CS 4-1 were subjected to the synthetic application of biochar from agriculture waste and chitosan for the adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Co(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous media. The results displayed a heterogeneous, well-developed surface. Additionally, the surface functional groups carboxyl, hydroxyl and phenol, determining the sorption mechanism and confirming the thermal stability of the materials, were present. The sorption evaluation was carried out as a function of the sorbent dose, pH, phase contact time, initial concentration of the solution and temperature. The maximum value of q_t for Pb(II)-BC-CS 4-1, 32.23 mg/g (C₀ 200 mg/L, mass 0.1 g, pH 5, 360 min), was identified. Nitric acid was applied for the sorbent regeneration with a yield of 99.13% for Pb(II)-BC-CS 2-1. The produced sorbents can be used for the decontamination of water by means of the cost-effective and high-performance method.

Tetracycline capture from aqueous solutions by nanocomposite of MWCNTs reinforced with glutaraldehyde cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan

The presence of pharmaceuticals as the emerging contaminates needs novel approaches and new materials to be remediated. This study aimed to develop and apply MWCNTs reinforced with glutaraldehyde cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanocomposite (MWCNTs/CS-PVA/GA NC) for removal of tetracycline (TC) as a model of antibiotics from aqueous solutions. The successful synthesis of NC was supported by techniques of SEM, XRD, TGA, FTIR, and EDX. The prepared NC was then utilized for TC adsorption under the main effective parameters of TC concentration (25-125 mg/L), sonication time (0-8 min), NC dose (1-130 mg), and tempearure (5-45 °C). The process behavior was comparably explored with different methods of central composite design (CCD), artificial neural networks (ANN), and general regression neural network (GRNN). The results showed that under the optimum settings presented by desirability function (DA), in which the respective values for the factors were 125 mg/L, 6.8 min, 130 mg, and 45 °C, the efficiency and adsorption capacity of NC is supposed to be 99.07% and ∼525 mg/g, respectively. From the models studied, although all were able to express the process with satisfactory accuracy, ANN provided the best accuracy and reliability owning to the highest R² (0.999) and lowest RMSE, ADD, MAE. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies showed that the process is fast (over 4.5 min), chemisorption, heterogeneous with multilayer nature, spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic. In addition, the as prepared NC could be recycled for five times without significant fail in its performance. All in all, the developed MWCNTs/CS-PVA/GA NC can be considered as a promising candidate in dealing with aqueous solutions' pollution with antibiotic.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from water by treatment with an O-hydroxyphenyl thiourea-modified chitosan

An O-hydroxyphenyl thiourea-modified chitosan (OTCS) with excellent Pb(II) adsorption performance and selectivity was prepared as an adsorbent. The structure and morphology of the adsorbent were systematically investigated by SEM, BET, FTIR, EDX, zeta-potential measurements, XPS and XRD. The impacts of the initial Pb(II) concentration, reaction time, temperature, pH value, and coexisting ions were explored. At pH 7 and 303 K, the maximal adsorption capacity of OTCS for Pb(II) was 208.33 mg/g, which was greater than those of other adsorbing materials reported in the literature. The metal ion adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were found to obey pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isothermal model, indicating that the adsorption process was monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption process could proceed spontaneously, and the thermodynamic results revealed that the adsorption mechanism was an endothermic reaction. The ion exchange and chelation between the sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen groups on the adsorbent and lead ions endowed the material with excellent adsorption properties. Significantly, OTCS showed excellent selectivity toward Pb(II). Therefore, the adsorbent OTCS is expected to promote the wider application of chitosan in the adsorption of Pb(II).

Recent advances in 3D-printed polylactide and polycaprolactone-based biomaterials for tissue engineering applications

The three-dimensional printing (3DP) also known as the additive manufacturing (AM), a novel and futuristic technology that facilitates the printing of multiscale, biomimetic, intricate cytoarchitecture, function-structure hierarchy, multi-cellular tissues in the complicated micro-environment, patient-specific scaffolds, and medical devices. There is an increasing demand for developing 3D-printed products that can be utilized for organ transplantations due to the organ shortage. Nowadays, the 3DP has gained considerable interest in the tissue engineering (TE) field. Polylactide (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) are exemplary biomaterials with excellent physicochemical properties and biocompatibility, which have drawn notable attraction in tissue regeneration. Herein, the recent advancements in the PLA and PCL biodegradable polymer-based composites as well as their reinforcement with hydrogels and bio-ceramics scaffolds manufactured through 3DP are systematically summarized and the applications of bone, cardiac, neural, vascularized and skin tissue regeneration are thoroughly elucidated. The interaction between implanted biodegradable polymers, in-vivo and in-vitro testing models for possible evaluation of degradation and biological properties are also illustrated. The final section of this review incorporates the current challenges and future opportunities in the 3DP of PCL- and PLA-based composites that will prove helpful for biomedical engineers to fulfill the demands of the clinical field.

Nanochitin: Chemistry, Structure, Assembly, and Applications

Chitin, a fascinating biopolymer found in living organisms, fulfills current demands of availability, sustainability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, functionality, and renewability. A feature of chitin is its ability to structure into hierarchical assemblies, spanning the nano- and macroscales, imparting toughness and resistance (chemical, biological, among others) to multicomponent materials as well as adding adaptability, tunability, and versatility. Retaining the inherent structural characteristics of chitin and its colloidal features in dispersed media has been central to its use, considering it as a building block for the construction of emerging materials. Top-down chitin designs have been reported and differentiate from the traditional molecular-level, bottom-up synthesis and assembly for material development. Such topics are the focus of this Review, which also covers the origins and biological characteristics of chitin and their influence on the morphological and physical-chemical properties. We discuss recent achievements in the isolation, deconstruction, and fractionation of chitin nanostructures of varying axial aspects (nanofibrils and nanorods) along with methods for their modification and assembly into functional materials. We highlight the role of nanochitin in its native architecture and as a component of materials subjected to multiscale interactions, leading to highly dynamic and functional structures. We introduce the most recent advances in the applications of nanochitin-derived materials and industrialization efforts, following green manufacturing principles. Finally, we offer a critical perspective about the adoption of nanochitin in the context of advanced, sustainable materials.

Comparison of Adsorption Capacity and Removal Efficiency of Strontium by Six Typical Adsorption Materials

The rapid development and application of nuclear technology have been accompanied by the production of large amounts of radioactive wastes, of which Sr is a typical nuclide. In this study, six typical materials with strong adsorption properties, namely activated carbon, kaolin, montmorillonite, bentonite, zeolite, and attapulgite, were selected. Their adsorption mechanisms were investigated by analyzing their adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, micromorphologies, element contents, specific surface areas, crystal structures, and functional groups. The results showed that the adsorption efficiency of Sr by the six adsorbents can be ranked as zeolite, bentonite, attapulgite, montmorillonite, activated carbon, and kaolin, among which the maximum adsorption capacity of zeolite was 4.07 mg/g. Based on the adsorption kinetic and thermodynamic fitting results, the adsorption of Sr by zeolites, bentonite and attapulgite is consistent with Langmuir model, the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption process of Sr (II) by montmorillonite, activated carbon and kaolinite is consistent with the Freundlich model and corresponds to non-uniform adsorption. The main mechanisms of the six materials are physical adsorption, ion exchange and complexation. In summary, zeolite, bentonite, and attapulgite, especially zeolite, are highly effective for the treatment of radioactive wastewater containing strontium and have great application value in the treatment of radioactive wastes.

Synthesis, characterization and application of new adsorbent composites based on sol-gel/chitosan for the removal of soluble substance in water

In this work, new adsorbent composites from the silica precursor tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and chitosan have been successfully synthesized, denominated 20%Chi, 30%Chi and 40%Chi. The composites presented enhanced chemical and physical characteristics, with emphasis on the high surface areas between 374.94 m²/g to 886.31 m²/g. The application of the composites in the model system (TY - Tartrazine yellow dye), presented adsorption capacities dependent on the amount of chitosan in the composite (40%Chi > 30%Chi > 20%Chi). However, from the experimental data of the constituent materials, 30%Chi provided the greatest increase in the adsorption capacity in the monolayer, with values of 36%. This demonstrates that the amount of chitosan in the compound alters the arrangement of adsorption sites. The 30%Chi composite presented life cycle superior to 10 reuse cycles.

Preparation and Characterization of Magnetite Talc (Fe3O4@Talc) Nanocomposite as an Effective Adsorbent for Cr(VI) and Alizarin Red S Dye

In this work, the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions and the organic dye Alizarin Red S (ARS) was investigated using magnetite talc (Fe₃O₄@Talc) nanocomposite. Different characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to demonstrate the physical and chemical properties of the fabricated Fe₃O₄@Talc nanocomposite. In addition, the adsorption isothermic, kinetic, and thermodynamic properties were illustrated. The results demonstrate that the investigated adsorption processes obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model for Cr(VI) and the Freundlich isotherm model for ARS dye, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.5 and 11.76 mg·g⁻¹, respectively, controlled by pseudo second-order kinetics. Regeneration and reusability studies demonstrated that the prepared Fe₃O₄@Talc nanocomposite is a promising and stable adsorbent with considerable reusability potential.

Chitosan-modified biochar: Preparation, modifications, mechanisms and applications

The chitosan-modified biochar composite, as a carbohydrate polymer, has received increasing attention and becomes a research hotspot. It is a promising impurity adsorption material, which has potential application value in the agricultural environment fields such as soil improvement and sewage purification. The composite can combine the advantages of biochar with chitosan, and the resulting composite usually exhibits a great improvement in its surface functional groups, adsorption sites, stability, and adsorption properties. In addition, compared to other adsorbents, the composite truly achieves the concept of "waste control by waste". In this paper, the preparation method, composite classification, adsorption mechanism, and models of biochar modified by chitosan are introduced, meanwhile, we also review and summarize their effects on the decontamination of wastewater and soil. In addition to common heavy metal ions, we also review the adsorption and removal of some other organic/inorganic pollutants, including (1) drug residues; (2) dyes; (3) phosphates; (4) radionuclides; (5) perfluorochemicals, etc. Moreover, challenges and prospects for the composite are presented and further studies are called for the chitosan-biochar composite. We believe that the composite will lead to further achievements in the field of environmental remediation.
