Abstract
Guar gum based bacterial cellulose (GG-BC) was generated from the soy sauce residue hydrolysate by in-situ fermentation, and its structure and performance were learned systematically. The GG concentration of 0.2 % was most suitable for GG-BC production with the yield of 1.21 g/L. During the in-situ fermentation, GG was implanted into the nano network of BC and thus altered its microstructure and properties. According to the FT-IR and NMR results, GG-BC had similar functional group structure and cellulose structural framework to those of BC. The degree of polymerization (DP) of GG-BC was 526.32-832.16, which was higher than that (426.32) of BC. Also, the GG-BC with low GG addition (0.2 % and 0.4 %) had a higher crystallinity than BC. Moreover, the GG-BC had a better heat tolerance than BC based on its higher temperature reaching the maximum degradation rate. The GG-BC with suitable GG addition had better texture characteristics, UV barrier property, swelling rate, and antioxidant activity than those of BC, showing that the in-situ fermentation with GG addition could promote the performance of GG-BC. Overall, this study can provide an attractive technology for both solving the environmental issue brought by soy sauce residue and producing high value-added GG-BC with good performance efficiently.

Abstract
Open wounds are prone to bacterial contamination and delayed healing due to environmental exposure, necessitating the development of advanced wound dressings. Hydrogels are ideal candidates for wound care for maintaining a moist environment which benefits for the cell migration and tissue regeneration. However, conventional polysaccharide hydrogels lack intrinsic antibacterial properties, prompting the incorporation of antibacterial agents. Herein, we present a novel composite hydrogel synthesized from curdlan (CUR) and xanthan gum (XG) via thermal annealing, augmented with MXene and Mg2+ to enhance antibacterial efficacy and promote cellular migration. The results proved that the mechanical properties of the composite hydrogel prepared with CUR and XG are significantly enhanced. Due to the influence of near-infrared irradiation, the antibacterial rates of XC/Mg2+/MX against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa are 81.84 % and 89.27 %, respectively. This innovative composite hydrogel offers new insights and avenues in the progress of sophisticated wound healing dressings areas.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an ideal candidate for wound dressings due to its natural origin, exceptional water-holding capacity, pliability, biocompatibility, and high absorption capability. However, the lack of essential antimicrobial activity limits its biomedical applications. This study reported BC-based wound dressings containing silk fibroin protein (SF), offering the potential for biomimetic properties, and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) for polyphenol-assisted surface modification to promote infectious wound healing. Glycerol was used as the carbon source to promote the formation of an adhesive layer by facilitating the β-sheet folding of SF, and different concentrations of EGCG were employed to interact with SF through strong hydrogen bonding facilitated by the polyphenolic groups. The functionalized membrane exhibited outstanding water-holding capacity, swelling ratio, and degradation properties, along with enhanced hydrophilicity, adhesiveness, and a remarkable free radical scavenging ability. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed its potent bacteriostatic activity. The composite membrane displayed excellent biocompatibility, including cellular and hemocompatibility. Importantly, it effectively promoted wound healing in murine back infections. These findings suggest the significant feasibility of the innovative modification approach, and that functionalized membranes have great potential as wound-dressing materials for infection management in future clinical applications.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a renewable biomaterial that has attracted significant attention due to its excellent properties and wide applications. Komagataeibacter xylinus CGMCC 2955 is an important BC-producing strain. It primarily produces BC from glucose while simultaneously generating gluconic acid as a by-product, which acidifies the medium and inhibits BC synthesis. To enhance glucose uptake and BC synthesis, we reconstructed the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent glucose phosphotransferase system (PTSGlc) and strengthened glycolysis by introducing heterologous genes, resulting in a recombinant strain (GX08PTS03; Δgcd::ptsHIcrrE. coli::ptsGE. coli::pfkAE. coli). Strain GX08PTS03 efficiently utilized glucose for BC production without accumulating gluconic acid. Subsequently, the fermentation process was systematically optimized. Under optimal conditions, strain GX08PTS03 produced 7.74 g/L of BC after 6 days of static fermentation, with a BC yield of 0.39 g/g glucose, which were 87.41 % and 77.27 % higher than those of the wild-type strain, respectively. The BC produced by strain GX08PTS03 exhibited a longer fiber diameter along with a lower porosity, significantly higher solid content, crystallinity, tensile strength, and Young's modulus. This study is novel in reporting that the engineered PTSGlc-based glucose metabolism could effectively enhance the production and properties of BC, providing a future outlook for the biopolymer industry.

Abstract
New carriers for protein immobilization are objects of interest in various fields of biomedicine. Immobilization is a technique used to stabilize and provide physical support for biological micro- and macromolecules and whole cells. Special efforts have been made to develop new materials for protein immobilization that are non-toxic to both the body and the environment, inexpensive, readily available, and easy to modify. Currently, biodegradable and non-toxic polymers, including cellulose, are widely used for protein immobilization. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural polymer with excellent biocompatibility, purity, high porosity, high water uptake capacity, non-immunogenicity, and ease of production and modification. BC is composed of glucose units and does not contain lignin or hemicellulose, which is an advantage allowing the avoidance of the chemical purification step before use. Recently, BC-protein composites have been developed as wound dressings, tissue engineering scaffolds, three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems, drug delivery systems, and enzyme immobilization matrices. Proteins or peptides are often added to polymeric scaffolds to improve their biocompatibility and biological, physical-chemical, and mechanical properties. To broaden BC applications, various ex situ and in situ modifications of native BC are used to improve its properties for a specific application. In vivo studies showed that several BC-protein composites exhibited excellent biocompatibility, demonstrated prolonged treatment time, and increased the survival of animals. Today, there are several patents and commercial BC-based composites for wounds and vascular grafts. Therefore, further research on BC-protein composites has great prospects. This review focuses on the major advances in protein immobilization on BC for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been found extensive applications in diverse domains for its exceptional attributes. However, the lack of antibacterial properties hampers its utilization in food and biomedical sectors. Leucocin, a bacteriocin belonging to class IIa, is synthesized by Leuconostoc that demonstrates potent efficacy against the foodborne pathogen, Listeria monocytogenes. In the current study, co-culturing strategy involving Kosakonia oryzendophytica FY-07 and Leuconostoc carnosum 4010 was used to confer anti-listerial activity to BC, which resulted in the generation of leucocin-containing BC (BC-L). The physical characteristics of BC-L, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were similar to the physical characteristics of BC. Notably, the experimental results of disc diffusion and growth curve indicated that the BC-L film exhibited a potent inhibitory effect against L. monocytogenes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that BC-L exerts its bactericidal activity by forming pores on the bacterial cell wall. Despite the BC-L antibacterial mechanism, which involves pore formation, the mammalian cell viability remained unaffected by the BC-L film. The measurement results of zeta potential indicated that the properties of BC changed after being loaded with leucocin. Based on these findings, the anti-listerial BC-L generated through this co-culture system holds promise as a novel effective antimicrobial agent for applications in meat product preservation and packaging.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an extracellular polysaccharide with myriad unique properties, such as high purity, water-holding capacity and biocompatibility, making it attractive in materials science. However, genetic engineering techniques for BC-producing microorganisms are rare. Herein, the electroporation-based gene transformation and the λ Red-mediated gene knockout method with a nearly 100 % recombination efficiency were established in the fast-growing and BC hyperproducer Enterobacter sp. FY-07. This genetic manipulation toolkit was validated by inactivating the protein subunit BcsA in the cellulose synthase complex. Subsequently, the inducible BC-producing strains from glycerol were constructed through inducible expression of the key gene fbp in the gluconeogenesis pathway, which recovered >80 % of the BC production. Finally, the BC properties analysis results indicated that the induced-synthesized BC pellicles were looser, more porous and reduced crystallinity, which could further broaden the application prospects of BC. To our best knowledge, this is the first attempt to construct the completely inducible BC-producing strains. Our work paves the way for increasing BC productivity by metabolic engineering and broadens the available fabrication methods for BC-based advanced functional materials.

In this work, covalent crosslinking of γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) with the chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) embedded in BC was designed to remove the limitation. As a result, the dosage, time, and batch of COS addition significantly affected the mechanical properties and the yield of bacterial cellulose complex film (BCCF). The addition of 2.25 % COS at the incubation time of 0.5, 1.5, and 2 d increased the Young's modulus and the yield by 5.65 and 1.42 times, respectively, but decreased the swelling behavior to 1774 %, 46 % of that of native BC. Covalent γ-PGA transformed the dendritic structure of BCCF into a spider network, decreasing the porosity and increasing the swelling behavior by 3.46 times. The strategy balanced the swelling behavior and mechanical properties through tunning hydrogen bond, electrostatic interaction, and amido bond. The modified BCCF exhibited a desired behavior of benzalkonium chlorides transport, competent for drug delivery. Thereby, the strategy will be a competent candidate to modify BC for such potential applications as wound dressing, artificial skin, scar-inhibiting patch, and so on.

Abstract
The demand for the functionalization of additive materials based on bacterial cellulose (BC) is currently high due to their potential applications across various sectors. The preparation of BC-based additive materials typically involves two approaches: in situ and ex situ. In situ modifications entail the incorporation of additive materials, such as soluble and dispersed substances, which are non-toxic and not essential for bacterial cell growth during the production process. However, these materials can impact the yield and self-assembly of BC. In contrast, ex situ modification occurs subsequent to the formation of BC, where the additive materials are not only adsorbed on the surface but also impregnated into the BC pellicle, while the BC slurry was homogenized with other additive materials and gelling agents to create composite films using the casting method. This review will primarily focus on the in situ and ex situ functionalization of BC then sheds light on the pivotal role of functionalized BC in advancing biomedical technologies, wound healing, tissue engineering, drug delivery, bone regeneration, and biosensors.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose is an extracellular polysaccharide produced by microorganisms, offering advantages such as high water-holding capacity, flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, its lack of bactericidal activity hampers its wide application. Usnic acid, a secondary metabolite derived from lichens of the Usnea genus, is recognized for its antibacterial and anti-biofilm efficiency, coupled with anti-inflammatory properties. Its water insolubility presents challenges for wide utilization and stable release. Sanxan gel, a novel polysaccharide, exhibits exceptional freeze-thaw stability, suspension properties, and high elasticity, rendering it effective as a suspending agent to improve the bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs. In this study, a hydrogel membrane is designed by combining bacterial cellulose and usnic acid suspended in sanxan gel through a simple in situ microorganism fermentation. The obtained membranes demonstrate excellent ability for sustained drug release, strong eradication capability against tested bacteria in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, effective inhibition of biofilm formation, and excellent hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. Additionally, the composite membranes promote wound healing with reduced inflammation and bacterial infection in a full-thickness wound infection model in mice. This study provides innovative insights and strategies for the development of functional dressings for infected wounds in future clinical applications.

Abstract
The effect of in-situ biochemical modification on the synthesis, structure, and function of xanthan gum based bacterial cellulose generated from Tieguanyin oolong tea residue hydrolysate was evaluated for the first time. This modification could overcome the inhibitory effect of the hydrolysate and the bacterial cellulose yield with 0.6% xanthan gum addition increased by 260.8% compared with that without xanthan gum addition. Bacterial cellulose and xanthan gum were combined by the in-situ modification and the alteration of fermentation medium rheological properties by xanthan gum addition might be beneficial for their combination. The average diameter of the bacterial cellulose microfibrils was increased by the modification, and it had a great influence on the crystalline structure of the bacterial cellulose. Additionally, both the water absorption and texture properties of the bacterial cellulose was strengthened by the modification. Overall, this modification showed great potential for efficient and effective xanthan gum based bacterial cellulose production.

Abstract
In this study, bacterial cellulose/gum Arabic composite (BC/GA) was synthesized by in-situ modification from lavender residue hydrolysate for the first time. The in-situ modification with GA adding showed great beneficial effect for BC/GA synthesis. Both the product (BC or BC/GA) yield and the product (BC or BC/GA) production per sugars consumption increased greatly by the in-situ modification when compared with the fermentation without GA adding (2.90 g/L vs. 0.91 g/L, and 0.461 g/g vs. 0.138 g/g). It is hypothesized that the combination of BC and GA is the main mechanism for the beneficial effect of the in-situ modification, and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images confirmed this hypothesis. GA adding showed little effect on the rheological properties of lavender residue hydrolysate, and this environment was suitable for the combination of BC and GA. The in-situ modification had an obvious influence on the crystallinity index and the thermal stability of BC/GA, but affected little on its functional groups and cellulose structural framework. Besides BC/GA synthesis and structure, the in-situ modification could also alter the texture properties of BC/GA. Overall, this study can offer some useful information for the biochemical conversion from green and cost-effective lavender residue hydrolysate to attractive biomaterial BC/GA.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a bio-produced nanostructure material widely used in biomedical, food, and paper-manufacturing industries. However, low production efficiency and high-cost have limited its industrial applications. This study aimed to examine the level of improvement in BC production by co-culturing Bacillus cereus and Komagataeibacter xylinus. The BC yield in corn stover enzymatic hydrolysate was found to be obviously enhanced from 1.2 to 4.4 g/L after the aforementioned co-culturing. The evidence indicated that acetoin (AC) and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) produced by B. cereus were the key factors dominating BC increment. The mechanism underlying BC increment was that AC and 2,3-BD increased the specific activity of AC dehydrogenase and the contents of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA), thus promoting the growth and energy level of K. xylinus. Meanwhile, the immobilization of BC could also facilitate oxygen acquisition in B. cereus under static conditions. This study was novel in reporting that the co-culture could effectively enhance BC production from the lignocellulosic enzymatic hydrolysate.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer with applications in numerous industries such as food and pharmaceutical sectors. In this study, various hydrocolloids including modified starches (oxidized starch-1404 and hydroxypropyl starch-1440), locust bean gum, xanthan gum (XG), guar gum, and carboxymethyl cellulose were added to the Hestrin-Schramm medium to improve the production performance and microstructure of BC by Gluconacetobacter entanii isolated from coconut water. After 14-day fermentation, medium supplemented with 0.1% carboxymethyl cellulose and 0.1% XG resulted in the highest BC yield with dry BC content of 9.82 and 6.06 g/L, respectively. In addition, scanning electron microscopy showed that all modified films have the characteristic three-dimensional network of cellulose nanofibers with dense structure and low porosity as well as larger fiber size compared to control. X-ray diffraction indicated that BC fortified with carboxymethyl cellulose exhibited lower crystallinity while Fourier infrared spectroscopy showed characteristic peaks of both control and modified BC films.

Abstract
In situ modification is commonly employed for Bacterial cellulose (BC) functionalization. However, water-insoluble modifiers are usually deposited at the bottom of the medium, therefore cannot be used for in situ modification of BC. Herein, a novel strategy for in situ modification of insoluble modifiers after suspension by a suspending agent was proposed. The BC-producing strain Kosakonia oryzendophytica FY-07, not Gluconacetobacter xylinus, was selected to prepare BC products with antibacterial activity because of its tolerance to natural antibacterial products. The experimental results showed that xanthan gum as a suspending agent can uniformly and stably disperse water-insoluble plant extracts magnolol in the culture medium to prepare the in situ modified BC products. Characterization of the properties showed that the in situ modified BC products have reduced crystallinity, significantly increased swelling ratio and strong inhibition on Gram-positive bacteria and fungi and weak inhibition on Gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, the in situ modified BC products had no toxicity to cells. This study provided a feasible strategy for in situ modification of BC using water-insoluble modifiers to extend BC functionality and has significant implications for the biopolymer industry.

Abstract
In biomedical applications, bacterial cellulose (BC) is widely used because of its cytocompatibility, high mechanical properties, and ultrafine nanofibrillar structure. However, biomedical use of neat BC is often limited due to its lack of antimicrobial properties. In the current article, we proposed a novel technique for preparing cationic BC hydrogel through in situ incorporation of cationic water-soluble cellulose derivative, cellulose bearing imidazolium tosylate function group (Cell-IMD), in the media used for BC preparation. Different concentrations of cationic cellulose derivative (2, 4, and 6%) were embedded into a highly inter-twined BC nanofibrillar network through the in situ biosynthesis until forming cationic cellulose gels. Cationic functionalization was deeply examined by the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), NMR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. In vitro studies with L929 cells confirmed a good cytocompatibility of BC/cationic cellulose derivatives, and a significant increase in cell proliferation after 7 days, in the case of BC/Cell-IMD3 groups. Finally, antimicrobial assessment against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans was assessed, recording a good sensitivity in the case of the higher concentration of the cationic cellulose derivative. All the results suggest a promising use of cationic hybrid materials for biomedical and bio-sustainable applications (i.e., food packaging).

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is currently one of the most popular environmentally friendly materials with unique structural and physicochemical properties for obtaining various functional materials for a wide range of applications. In this regard, the literature reporting on bacterial nanocellulose has increased exponentially in the past decade. Currently, extensive investigations aim at promoting the manufacturing of BC-based nanocomposites with other components such as nanoparticles, polymers, and biomolecules, and that will enable to develop of a wide range of materials with advanced and novel functionalities. However, the commercial production of such materials is limited by the high cost and low yield of BC, and the lack of highly efficient industrial production technologies as well. Therefore, the present review aimed at studying the current literature data in the field of highly efficient BC production for the purpose of its further usage to obtain polymer nanocomposites. The review highlights the progress in synthesizing BC-based nanocomposites and their applications in biomedical fields, such as wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering. Bacterial nanocellulose-based biosensors and adsorbents were introduced herein.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer produced by different microorganisms, but in biotechnological practice, Komagataeibacter xylinus is used. The micro- and nanofibrillar structure of BC, which forms many different-sized pores, creates prerequisites for the introduction of other polymers into it, including those synthesized by other microorganisms. The study aims to develop a cocultivation system of BC and prebiotic producers to obtain BC-based composite material with prebiotic activity. In this study, pullulan (PUL) was found to stimulate the growth of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG better than the other microbial polysaccharides gellan and xanthan. BC/PUL biocomposite with prebiotic properties was obtained by cocultivation of Komagataeibacter xylinus and Aureobasidium pullulans, BC and PUL producers respectively, on molasses medium. The inclusion of PUL in BC is proved gravimetrically by scanning electron microscopy and by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. Cocultivation demonstrated a composite effect on the aggregation and binding of BC fibers, which led to a significant improvement in mechanical properties. The developed approach for "grafting" of prebiotic activity on BC allows preparation of environmentally friendly composites of better quality.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a valuable biopolymer that is increasingly used in medical, pharmaceutical and food industries with its excellent physicochemical properties as high water-holding capacity, nanofibrillar structure, large surface area, porosity, mechanical strength and biocompatibility. Accordingly, the isolation, identification and characterization of potent BC producers from grape, thorn apple and apple vinegars were performed in this study. The strains isolated from grape and apple vinegars were identified as Komagataeibacter maltaceti and the strain isolated from thorn apple vinegar was identified as Komagataeibacter nataicola with 16S rRNA analysis. Optimized conditions were found as 8% dextrin, 1.5% (peptone + yeast extract) and 10% inoculation amount at pH 6.0 with a productivity rate of 1.15 g/d/L, a yield of 8.06% and a dry weight of 6.45 g/L for K. maltaceti, and 10% maltose, 1% (peptone + yeast extract) and 10% inoculation amount at pH 6.0 with a productivity rate of 0.96 g/L/d, a yield of 5.35% and a dry weight of 5.35 g/L for K. nataicola. Obtained BC from K. maltaceti and K. nataicola strains was more than 2.56- and 1.86-fold when compared with BC obtained from HS media and exhibited 95.1% and 92.5% WHC, respectively. Based on the characterization results, BC pellicles show characteristic FT-IR bands and have ultrafine 3D structures with high thermal stability. By means of having ability to assimilate monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharide used in this study, it is predicted that both isolated Komagataeibacter species can be used in the production of biopolymers from wastes containing complex carbon sources in the future.

Abstract
Precise classification of bacteria facilitates prediction of their ecological niche. The genus Enterobacter includes pathogens of plants and animals but also beneficial bacteria that may require reclassification. Here, we propose reclassification of Enterobacter FY-07 (FY-07), a strain that has many plant-growth-promoting traits and produces bacterial cellulose (BC), to the Kosakonia genera. To re-examine the taxonomic position of FY-07, a polyphasic approach including 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, ATP synthase β subunit (atpD) gene sequence analysis, DNA gyrase (gyrB) gene sequence analysis, initiation translation factor 2 (infB) gene sequence analysis, RNA polymerase β subunit (rpoB) gene sequence analysis, determination of DNA G + C content, average nucleotide identity based on BLAST, in silico DNA–DNA hybridization and analysis of phenotypic features was applied. This polyphasic analysis suggested that Enterobacter sp. FY-07 should be reclassified as Kosakonia oryzendophytica FY-07. In addition, the potential of FY-07 to promote plant growth was also investigated by detecting related traits and the colonization of FY-07 in rice roots.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a promising biopolymer, but its three-dimensional structure needs to be controllable to be used in multiple fields. BC has some advantages over other types of cellulose, not only in terms of purity and properties but also in terms of modification (in situ modification) during the synthesis process. Here, starches from different sources or with amylose/amylopectin content were added to the growth medium to regulate the structural properties of BC in-situ. The obtained BC membranes were further modified by superhydrophobic treatment for oil-water separation. Starches alter the viscosity of the medium, thus affecting bacterial motility and cellulose synthesis, and adhere to the microfibers, limiting their further polymerization and ultimately altering the membrane porosity, pore size, and mechanical properties perpendicular to the BC fibril layer direction. The average pore diameter of the BC/PS membrane increased by 1.94 times compared to the initial BC membrane. The chemically modified BC/PS membrane exhibited super-hydrophobicity (water contact angle 167°), high oil-water separation flux (dichloromethane, 23,205 Lm-2 h-1 MPa-1), high separation efficiency (>97%). The study provides a foundation for developing methods to regulate the network structure of BC and broaden its application.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a promising unique material for various biomedical and cosmetic applications due to its morphology, mechanical strength, high purity, high water uptake, non-toxicity, chemical controllability, and biocompatibility. Today, extensive investigation is into the manufacturing of BC-based composites with other components such as nanoparticles, synthetic polymers, natural polymers, carbon materials, and biomolecules, which will allow the development of a wide range of biomedical and cosmetic products. Moreover, the addition of different reinforcement substances into BC and the organized arrangement of BC nano-fibers have proven a promising improvement in their properties for biomedical applications. This review paper highlights the progress in synthesizing BC-based composites and their applications in biomedical fields, such as wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and cancer treatment. It emphasizes high-performance BC-based materials and cosmetic applications. Furthermore, it presents challenges yet to be defeated and future possibilities for BC-based composites for biomedical and cosmetic applications.

Herein, stabilization of strain, optimisation of culture conditions, and a cheap carbon source were combined to achieve highly efficient, low-cost, large-scale BC production in 20 L containers. Optimisation of culture conditions increased both BC productivity and sugar conversion ratio significantly, from 2.08 g/L/day and 9.78% to 17.13 g/L/day and 70.31%, respectively. Furthermore, BC productivity and sugar conversion ratio reached 13.96 g/L/day and 85.50% using corn stover total hydrolysate as carbon source. The low-cost, facile, and highly efficient process can generate large quantities of BC, and could promote industrialisation of BC production.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an important polysaccharide synthesized by some bacterial species under specific culture conditions, which presents several remarkable features such as microporosity, high water holding capacity, good mechanical properties and good biocompatibility, making it a potential biomaterial for medical applications. Since its discovery, BC has been used for wound dressing, drug delivery, artificial blood vessels, bone tissue engineering, and so forth. Additionally, BC can be simply manipulated to form its derivatives or composites with enhanced physicochemical and functional properties. Several polymers, carbon-based nanomaterials, and metal nanoparticles (NPs) have been introduced into BC by ex situ and in situ methods to design hybrid materials with enhanced functional properties. This review provides comprehensive knowledge and highlights recent advances in BC production strategies, its structural features, various in situ and ex situ modification techniques, and its potential for biomedical applications.

Abstract
In this study, bacterial cellulose was synthesized by Taonella mepensis from traditional Chinese medicinal herb residues hydrolysate. To overcome the inhibitory effect of fermentation environment, in-situ fermentation with gellan gum adding was carried out for the first time. After 10 days' static fermentation, both high-acyl gellan gum and low-acyl gellan gum adding showed certain beneficial effects for bacterial cellulose production that the highest bacterial cellulose yield (0.866 and 0.798 g/L, respectively) was 59% and 47% higher than that (0.543 g/L) without gellan gum adding. Besides, gellan gum based bacterial cellulose showed some better texture characteristics. Gellan gum was loaded in the nano network of bacterial cellulose, and gellan gum adding had some influence on the crystal structure and thermal degradation behaviors of bacterial cellulose but affected little on its functional groups. Overall, this in-situ fermentation technology is attractive for bacterial cellulose production from low-cost but inhibitory substrates.

Abstract
Natural polysaccharides are well-known biomaterials because of their availability and low-cost, with applications in diverse fields. Cellulose, a renowned polysaccharide, can be obtained from different sources including plants, algae, and bacteria, but recently much attention has been paid to the microorganisms due to their potential of producing renewable compounds. In this regard, bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a novel type of nanocellulose material that is commercially synthesized mainly by Komagataeibacter spp. Characteristics such as purity, porosity, and remarkable mechanical properties made BNC a superior green biopolymer with applications in pharmacology, biomedicine, bioprocessing, and food. Genetic manipulation of BNC-producing strains and in situ modifications of the culturing conditions can lead to BNC with enhanced yield/productivity and properties. This review mainly highlights the role of genetic engineering of Komagataeibacter strains and co-culturing of bacterial strains with additives such as microorganisms and nanomaterials to synthesize BNC with improved functionality and productivity rate.
