Alginate-oil gelator composite foam for effective oil spill treatment

Supercritical CO2 extrusion foaming of highly open-cell poly(lactic acid) foam with superior oil adsorption performance

Addressing marine oil spills and industrial water pollution necessitates the development of eco-efficient oil-absorbing materials. With increasing concern for the environment, there is a consensus to decrease the use of petroleum-based polymers. Herein, lightweight poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blend foams with varying thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) content were fabricated via a solvent-free, eco-friendly supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extrusion foaming technology. The incorporation of TPU significantly enhanced the crystallization rate of PLA, with the semi-crystallization time of PT30 and PT50 blends at 105 °C exhibiting a reduction of 77.2 % and 47.9 %, respectively, compared to neat PLA. The resulting foams exhibited an open-cell structure with excellent selective oil adsorption capabilities. Notably, the PT30 foam achieved a remarkable maximum expansion ratio of 36.0, while the PT50 foam attained the highest open-cell content of 96.2 %. The PT50 foam demonstrated an outstanding adsorption capacity, spanning from 4.7 to 18.8 g/g for diverse oils and solvents, with rapid adsorption kinetics, reaching 94.9 % of the equilibrium adsorption capacity for CCl4 within just 1 min. Furthermore, the PT50 foam retained 95.2 % of its adsorption capacity for CCl4 over 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. This study presents a scalable and sustainable approach for large-scale production of high-performance, bio-based foams, facilitating efficient oil-water separation.

Stereo-complex polylactide composite aerogel for crude oil adsorption

Adsorption materials are a cost-effective and simple method for oil spill remediation, but their efficiency is limited by high crude oil viscosity. Additionally, non-degradable materials pose another risk of secondary pollution, such as microplastic debris. Here, an environmentally-friendly stereo-complex polylactide composite (SCC) aerogel were developed via water-assisted thermally induced phase separation. The SCC with 3 wt% carbon nanotubes had a hierarchical structure of micro/nanoscale pores and high content of stereo-complex crystallites (35.7 %). Along with the excellent water repellency (water contact angle: 157°), SCC aerogel was 2.7 times as resistant to hydrolysis than poly(l-lactide) aerogel (Ph = 13, 37 °C). Additionally, a maximum absorption capacity of 41.2 g g-1 and over 97 % oil/water separation efficiency after 10 cycles were obtained in low viscosity conditions; while in high viscosity conditions, it displayed excellent photothermal performance, reaching a surface temperature of 85 °C under 1 sunlight, reducing crude oil absorption time from 42 min to 60 s (97.6 %-time savings). Moreover, it facilitated continuous crude oil spill recovery under sunlight with an adsorption rate of 3.3 × 104 kg m-3 h-1. The SCC aerogel presents a potential route for utilizing solar energy in crude oil adsorption applications without additional environmental burden.

Fabrication of bio-based biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) composite foams for highly efficient oil-water separation

The open-cell bio-based biodegradable polymer foams show good application prospect in dealing with the serious environmental issue caused by oil spill and organic solvents spills, while the cell structures and hydrophobic properties of the foams limit their performance. In this work, the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was selected to help prepare bio-based biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) foams. Based on a two-step foaming method, the crystallization ability of different samples was regulated by the "original crystals" together with PHBV in the foaming process, where skeleton structures were provided to facilitate the open-cell structures and promote their mechanical property. As illustrated, PHBV facilitated the formation of open-cell PLA foams, where the foams displayed superior oil-water separation capacity. The maximum volume expansion ratio of the foams was 80.08, the contact angle of deionized water reached to 134.5°, the adsorption capacity for oil or organic solvents was 10.8 g/g-51.8 g/g, and the adsorption capacity for CCl4 can still maintained 83.5 % of the initial value after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. This work not only clarified the foaming mechanism of open-cell foams, but also provided a green and simple method for preparing bio-based biodegradable foams possessing excellent oil-water separation performance.

A Review on Hydrophobically Associated Alginates: Approaches and Applications

Alginates are linear anionic polysaccharides, which are well-known for their biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable nature. The polymer consists of alternating units of β-(1 → 4)-linked D-mannuronic acid (M) and α-(1 → 4)-linked L-guluronic acid (G) that have hydroxyl and carboxyl groups as the main functional groups. As a large number of free carboxyl and hydroxyl groups are present in the polymeric chain, the polymer is predominantly hydrophilic. The food and pharmaceutical industries have been the most extensive utilizers of alginates to produce gelling and thickening agents. However, by imparting hydrophobicity to alginates, the range of applications can be widened. Although there are reviews on alginate and its chemical modifications, reviews focusing on hydrophobically associated alginates have not been presented. The commonly used chemical modifications to incorporate hydrophobicity include esterification, Ugi reaction, reductive amination, and graft copolymerization. The hydrophobically modified alginates play an important role in delivery of hydrophobic drugs and pesticides as the modification increases the affinity toward hydrophobic components and helps in their sustained release. Due to their nontoxic and edible nature, they find use in the food industry as emulsion stabilizer to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions and to improve creaming ability. Further, alginate-based materials such as membranes, aerogels, and films are hydrophobically modified to improve their functionality and applicability to water treatment and food packaging. This Review aims to highlight the important chemical modifications and methods that are done to impart hydrophobicity to alginate, and the applications of hydrophobically modified alginates in different sectors ranging from drug delivery to food packaging are discussed.

Aluminum soap nanoparticles-lignin powder form phase-selective gelator as an efficient sorbent for oils/water separation

Rapid and efficient recovery of oil spill is the key link for oil spill remediation, and also a great challenge. Here, the organogelator-polymerized porous matrix composed of adsorbents and organogelators can provide a new strategy for solving this problem. The gelling mechanism of aluminum 12-hydroxystearate (Al HSA) to form spherical nano micelles in solvents was investigated via UV-vis, FT-IR, and XRD. A creative method for aluminum soap-lignin gelator (OTS-AL/Al HSA) syntheses was put forward through the saponification of 12-hydroxystearic acid (HSA) and lignin via epichlorohydrin (ECH) crosslinking. By adjusting the ECH content, the growth of Al HSA nanoparticles (15-40 nm) on lignin can be realized, and the accordingly increased roughness endowed gelator with better hydrophobicity (WCA of 134.6°) before octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) modification. Thanks to the porous structures, the gelator powder exhibited a high sorption capacity in the range of 3.5-5.2 g g-1 for oils and organic solvents. Rheological studies demonstrated high mechanical strength of gels (>1.6 × 105 pa) and the gelator still retained 70% sorption capacity after 6 gelation-distillation cycles. The gelation characteristics of OTS-AL/Al HSA were attributed to the rapid sorption of oils by lignin and the self-assembly of Al HSA nano micelles on lignin to form an aggregated network structure trapping oils, thus realizing the synergistic effect of oil sorption-gelation.

Biomass Chitosan-Based Tubular/Sheet Superhydrophobic Aerogels Enable Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Water pollution, which is caused by leakage of oily substances, has been recognized as one of the most serious global environmental pollutions endangering the ecosystem. High-quality porous materials with superwettability, which are typically constructed in the form of aerogels, hold huge potential in the field of adsorption and removal of oily substances form water. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to fabricate a novel biomass absorbent with a layered tubular/sheet structure for efficient oil/water separation. The aerogels were fabricated by assembling hollow poplar catkin fiber into chitosan sheets using a directional freeze-drying method. The obtained aerogels were further wrapped with -CH₃-ended siloxane structures using CH₃SiCl₃. This superhydrophobic aerogel (CA ≈ 154 ± 0.4°) could rapidly trap and remove oils from water with a large sorption range of 33.06-73.22 g/g. The aerogel facilitated stable oil recovery (90.07-92.34%) by squeezing after 10 sorption-desorption cycles because of its mechanical robustness (91.76% strain remaining after 50 compress-release cycles). The novel design, low cost, and sustainability of the aerogel provide an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for handling oil spills.

Facile, green and scalable preparation of low-cost PET-PVDF felts for oil absorption and oil/water separation

3D felt materials with pore structures have the advantages of high absorption performance and recyclability in oily wastewater treatment and chemical leakage. However, most of them were fabricated using either toxic organic solvents or complicated procedures. Herein, we report a facile, green, and scalable route for the fabrication of 3D composite felts with large pore structures by sequentially stirring and heating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The resulting PET-PVDF felt exhibits high oil absorption capacity to a variety of oil and organic solvents with a maximum saturated absorption capacity of 32 g/g. Additionally, it can be used to separate oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of 99.9% and separation flux of 89570 L m^-2 h^-1. Moreover, this felt shows excellent mechanical durability and chemical stability under acid, base, salt solution, and other harsh environments. The current study provides a promising approach for large-scale industrial oily wastewater separation.

Hydrophobic and oleophilic open-cell foams from in-situ microfibrillation blends of poly(lactic acid) and polytetrafluoroethylene: Selective oil-adsorption behaviors

Confronted with severe water contamination induced by the spillage of oils, seeking oil-selective adsorbent to recover oil from oily wastewater is extremely urgent. In particular, the functionalized polymer foams with open-cell structures are highly promising oil-selective adsorbent. Herein, a simple, effective and green method was presented to prepare open-cell poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) foams with selective oil-adsorption behaviors via melt blending and supercritical CO₂ batch foaming technique. The introduction of PTFE had a distinct positive influence on the melt viscoelasticity and crystallization performances of various PLA specimens. The resulted PLA/PTFE4 foam with a volume expansion ratio of 10.17 ± 0.93 and a cell density of 1.58 × 10⁸ cells/cm³ possessed the highest open-cell content of 90.81 ± 0.78 %. Meanwhile, PLA/PTFE4 foam revealed oil/water selective adsorption capacity of 1.2-6.1 g/g for various organic solvents and oils. The adsorption capacity of PLA/PTFE4 foam for CCl₄ exhibited no significant decrement during ten adsorption-desorption cycles. This research offered a guideline for the manufacture of green environmental open-cell polymer foams for oil-selective adsorption.

Sugar-Based Phase-Selective Supramolecular Self-Assembly System for Dye Removal and Selective Detection of Cu2+ Ions

Simple, effective, and eco-friendly sugar-based phase-selective gelators were synthesized at a low cost. They showed high gelling ability toward a wide range of solvents at lower concentrations (minimum gelation concentration ∼0.3%). Preliminary tests reveal that these low molecular weight organogelators can immediately and phase-selectively gel benzene, toluene, petrol, and kerosene in water at room temperature. We also identified G13 in toluene as the good gelator, and the corresponding organogel proficiently removes water-soluble dyes from their concentrated aqueous solutions. This efficient removal of toxic organic solvents and dyes from water suggests promising applications in removing organic substances from contaminated water resources. The thermoreversible gel exhibits effective rechargeability up to five cycles of burning and gelation, which imply the flame stability of the gel. Interestingly, these compounds had a high detection ability toward Cu²⁺ ions with a state change from gel to the solution. The physical justification for gelation mechanisms and the molecular interaction with metal ions were further confirmed by computational studies.
