Development of a microbial coating for cellulosic surface using aloe vera and silane

Antibacterial evaluation of garlic extracts on chitosan/starch packaging film using response surface methodology and its application for shelf-life extension of bell peppers (Capsicum annuum)

In this study, garlic extract (GE) was assessed as a potential additive in chitosan/starch (Ch/De) coatings, focusing on phenolic and flavonoid content analyses and antibacterial properties. Using response surface methodology approach, an optimization method was employed to achieve the optimal antibacterial formulation, with Ch, De, and GE identified as key variables in the Design of Experiment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses elucidated interactions among these primary components within the films, while thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the enhanced thermal stability of GE-coated film formulations (Ch/De/GE). The Ch/De/GE exhibited antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) with an inhibition zone of 7.2 mm at optimized concentrations of 2% w/v Ch, 1.5% w/v starch, and 0.5% v/v GE. In silico molecular docking studies provided insights into GE's inhibitory role as an antibacterial agent. Evaluation of green and yellow bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) over 18 days showed that coated peppers maintained better visual appearance and mass stability, with a weight loss decrease of 40.54%-48.96%, compared to uncoated ones. Additionally, the Ch/De/GE coating effectively inhibited bacterial growth, reducing it by 1-1.23 log CFU, during the storage period. In conclusion, the Ch/De/GE coating effectively extends the shelf-life of bell peppers and maintains their quality, demonstrating its potential for use in food packaging to preserve perishable items. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The optimized chitosan/starch/garlic extract (Ch/De/GE) film developed in this study shows promising potential for application in the food packaging industry, particularly in extending the shelf life of perishable items like bell peppers. Its enhanced antibacterial properties, along with its ability to maintain visual appearance and reduce weight loss, make it an effective natural preservative that could replace synthetic additives in food packaging. By incorporating this biodegradable film into packaging solutions, producers can offer safer, more sustainable products that meet consumer demand for natural and environmentally friendly options.

Antiviral Potential of Traditional Unani Medicine with Special Emphasis on Dengue: A Review

Dengue fever has become a major public health concern. It is usually related to intravascular leaking, bleeding disorders, and thrombocytopenia and is recognized as a potent threat to humans. The scarcity of anti-dengue medication or vaccine for such a serious disease leads to an upsurge in the usage of traditional medicines for its proper management. India has diverse biodiversity and a long history of using plant-based remedies. Several medicinal plant extracts have been studied for producing anti-dengue viral activity. AYUSH traditional systems provide a plethora of plants that have been reported to be useful in the treatment of fever. Single and compound plant- based formulations in natural form have been used in Unani holistic approaches. This review serves as a new approach to illustrate the most recent evidence regarding the antiviral activity of various plants by providing scientific proof and also to validate the traditional formulations as effective treatments in dengue fever for global acceptance.

Studies on the Impact of the Photoinitiator Amount Used during the PVP-Based Hydrogels' Synthesis on Their Physicochemical Properties

In recent times, a great interest is directed to developing biomaterials incorporated with various therapeutical substances which may enhance them with new properties and thus increase their application potential. In this work, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-based hydrogels modified with Aloe vera juice and vitamin C and differing in the amount of the photoinitiator used during their synthesis were developed. Analysis of hydrogels included characterization of their chemical structure via FT-IR spectroscopy, sorption properties, wettability, surface morphology, behavior in simulated physiological liquids and mechanical properties. Finally, hydrogels' cytotoxicity towards L929 murine fibroblasts using MTT reduction assay was additionally verified. It was demonstrated that as the amount of the photoinitiator used during the synthesis of hydrogels increased, the smoother their surface and the higher their hydrophilicity. Next, the greater the amount of the photoinitiator, the lower is the percentage elongation of the hydrogel and the greater the hardness. In turn, the swelling ability of hydrogels depended strongly on the type of the absorbed liquid-swelling ratios of samples in distilled water were 24% higher than in SBF, 18% higher than in Ringer liquid, and 32% higher than in hemoglobin wherein the amount of the photoinitiator did not affect this property. Additionally, hydrogels were stable and did not degrade in simulated physiological liquids. The only changes in pH of the incubation media were probably caused by the active substances release from hydrogels which was also confirmed via a lesser intensity of the absorption band on FT-IR spectra corresponding to the functional group occurring in compounds included in Aloe vera juice. Importantly, the viability of fibroblasts incubated with developed materials was at least 86%. Thus the hydrogels, due to their properties, seem to show application potential to be used for biomedical purposes, e.g., as innovative dressing materials.

Extraction Methods, Quantitative and Qualitative Phytochemical Screening of Medicinal Plants for Antimicrobial Textiles: A Review

Medicinal plants are the product of natural drug discoveries and have gained traction due to their pharmacological activities. Pathogens are everywhere, and they thrive in ideal conditions depending on the nutrients, moisture, temperature, and pH that increase the growth of harmful pathogens on surfaces and textiles. Thus, antimicrobial agents and finishes may be the solution to the destruction of pathogens. This review article presents an analysis of various aspects of producing antimicrobial finishings, the microorganisms, their mechanism of attachment to natural and synthetic fibre, the effect of microbial growth, and the principle and mechanism of the microbial activity of the medicinal plants. Furthermore, the extraction methods, qualitative and quantitative phytochemical evaluations of antimicrobial efficacy, and developments of antimicrobial treated textiles using various agents are covered in this review.

Nano Coating of Aloe-Gel Incorporation Additives to Maintain the Quality of Freshly Cut Fruits

The edible coating is an environmentally friendly technology that is applied to fresh-cut fruit products. One of the natural ingredients that are potentially applicable is aloe-gel because it contains several functional components. The main advantage of aloe-coating is that additives can be incorporated into the polymer matrix to enhance its properties. Additives tend to improve the safety, nutritional, and sensory attributes of fresh fruits, but in some cases, aloe-coating does not work. Furthermore, particle size determines the effectiveness of the process on fresh-cut fruits. Aloe-gel nano-coating can be used to overcome the difficulty of adhesion on the surface of fresh-cut fruits. However, quality criteria for fresh cut fruit coated with aloe-gel nano-coating must be strictly defined. The fruit to be processed must be of minimal quality so that discoloration, loss of firmness, spoilage ratio, and fruit weight loss can be minimized. This study aims to discuss the use of nano-coating aloe-gel incorporated with additional ingredients to maintain the quality of fresh-cut fruits. It also examined the recent advances in preparation, extraction, stabilization, and application methods in fresh fruits.

Advances in the Prophylaxis of Respiratory Infections by the Nasal and the Oromucosal Route: Relevance to the Fight with the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic

In this time of COVID-19 pandemic, the strategies for prevention of the infection are a primary concern. Looking more globally on the subject and acknowledging the high degree of misuse of protective face masks from the population, we focused this review on alternative pharmaceutical developments eligible for self-defense against respiratory infections. In particular, the attention herein is directed to the nasal and oromucosal formulations intended to boost the local immunity, neutralize or mechanically "trap" the pathogens at the site of entry (nose or mouth). The current work presents a critical review of the contemporary methods of immune- and chemoprophylaxis and their suitability and applicability in topical mucosal dosage forms for SARS-CoV-2 prophylaxis.

Bioactive Khadi Cotton Fabric by Functional Designing and Immobilization of Nanosilver Nanogels

The antimicrobial finishing is the most suitable alternative for designing medical textiles for biomedical applications. The present investigation aims at the preparation of skin-contacting khadi cotton fabric that would prevent microbial infection and offer excellent skin compatibility. A simple approach has been followed for the preparation of bioactive nanogels for antimicrobial finishing of the khadi cotton fabric. Bioactive nanogels were synthesized by using aloe vera (AV) as a reducing agent for silver ions in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). PVA stabilizes the growth of silver nanoparticles, which is influenced by the variation in the reaction time and the temperature. Nanogels were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The nanogels exhibited strong antimicrobial behavior against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as confirmed by the colony count method. Almost 100% antibacterial behavior was observed for the nanosilver content of 10 mM. The nanogel-finished khadi fabric showed bactericidal properties against both S. aureus and E. coli. The nanogel-finished fabric exhibited high hydrophilicity allowing complete water droplet penetration within 10 s as compared to 136 s in virgin fabric. Moreover, the skin irritation study of the fabric on male Swiss albino mice did not show any appearance of dermal toxicity. These results demonstrated that the bioactive finished khadi fabric is appropriate as skin contacting material in human health care.

Protection, disinfection, and immunization for healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic: Role of natural and synthetic macromolecules

The world is trying to improve public health while the outbreak of the COVID-19 is at its worst. So far, countless people have died from the COVID-19 disease and it is still a serious threat to human health. Synthetic and natural polymers are unavoidable materials in the healthcare sector. During the COVID-19 outbreak, diverse medical equipment and devices were designed and developed by using these macromolecules for the protection, disinfection, and immunization applications. Synthetic polymers such as polypropylene, polystyrene, poly(lactic acid), poly(ethylene terephthalate), and so forth have been successfully applied for the design and fabrication of diverse face masks, shields, anti-viral coatings, as well as diagnostic kits. Natural polymers having great features such as biodegradability and environmentally friendly are made from algae, plants, and animals. These polymers including sodium alginate, chitosan, cellulose, and gums have been shown a critical role in the fabrication of personal protective equipment, immunosensors, and anti-viral spray for control and fight against COVID-19. Besides, the problem of plastic waste can be solved by replacing them with natural polymers. This mini-review aims to show the application of polymer-based materials during the COVID-19 epidemic.
