Abstract
The lyotropic phase behavior of four common and easily accessible glycosides, n-octyl α-d-glycosides, namely, α-Glc-OC8, α-Man-OC8, α-Gal-OC8, and α-Xyl-OC8, was investigated. The presence of normal hexagonal (HI), bicontinuous cubic (VI), and lamellar (Lα) phases in α-Glc-OC8 and α-Man-OC8 including their phase diagrams in water reported previously was verified by deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance (2H NMR), via monitoring the D2O spectra. Additionally, the partial binary phase diagrams and the liquid crystal structures formed by α-Gal-OC8 and α-Xyl-OC8 in D2O were constructed and confirmed using small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering and 2H NMR. The average number of bound water molecules (nb) per headgroup in the Lα phase was determined by the systematic measurement of the quadrupolar splitting of D2O over a wide range of molar ratio values (glycoside/D2O), especially at high glucoside composition. The number of bound water molecules bound to the headgroup was found to be around 1.5-2.0 for glucoside, mannoside, and galactoside, all of which possesses four OH groups. In the case of xyloside, which has only three OH groups, the bound water content is ∼2.0. Our findings confirmed that the bound water content of all n-octyl α-d-glycosides studied is lower compared to the number of possible hydrogen bonding sites possibly due to the fact that most of the OH groups are involved in intralayer interaction that holds the lipid assembly together.

Abstract
The use of carbohydrates, as a part of surface-active compounds, has been studied due to their biodegradability and nontoxic profile. A series of alkyl glycosides containing d-lyxose and l-rhamnose with alkyl chains of 8-12 carbon atoms were investigated. The effects of structural variations on their physico-chemical and biological properties have been evaluated for a detailed understanding of their properties. Alkyl glycosides were tested on their toxicity against bacterial cells of the genus Pseudomonas (MTT assay), microbiological adhesion to hydrocarbons (MATH assay), cell surface hydrophobicity (Congo red assay), cell membrane permeability (crystal violet assay), and bacterial biofilm formation. Furthermore, their antifungal activity against two pathogenic microorganisms Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger was investigated using the disc diffusion method. Toxicological studies revealed that compounds could reduce the metabolic activity of bacterial cells only moderately but they increased the hydrophobicity of cell surface in Pseudomonas strains. In addition, alkyl glycosides changed the permeability of the cell membranes to the level of 30-40% for this strain. The compounds with an even number of carbon atoms in their alkyl chain promoted stronger bacterial biofilm formation on the glass surface. All studied derivatives demonstrated very strong antifungal activity against fungus A. niger but very small effect against C. albicans. Overall, the results showed that long-chain alkyl glycosides could be considered as inexpensive, biocompatible, nontoxic agents, and serve for the surface design to avoid bacterial adhesion as an alternative solution to antibiotic treatment.

Abstract
In 2014, almost 16 million tons of surfactants were used globally for cleaning and industrial applications. As a result, massive quantities disperse into environmental compartments every day. There is great market interest in developing highly biodegradable, less-toxic, and renewable alternatives to currently used petroleum-based surfactants. Glycolipid surfactants, composed of a sugar head-group and lipid tail, are effective surfactants and emulsifiers with a high tolerance to electrolytes and are easily tailored to address specific needs. The green synthesis and surfactant characteristics of a suite of cellobiosides and melibiosides were recently described. The biodegradability and toxicity of 1°-alkyl-O-cellobiosides, 2°-alkyl-O-cellobiosides, and 1°-alkyl-O-melibiosides with straight-chain alkyl tails of 8, 10, and 12 are reported in this study. Biodegradability was assessed by quantifying mineralization (CO2 evolution). All of the glycosides were inherently biodegradable and most were readily biodegradable according to OECD and EPA definitions. The Microtox acute toxicity assay showed both chain length and head group had significant effects on toxicity, but most of the molecules were practically non-toxic according to EPA definitions with EC50 values > 100 mg L-1. Cytotoxicity to human lung (H1299) and keratinocyte cell lines (HaCaT) was measured by xCELLigence and MTS assays. Cytotoxicity values were comparable to similar glycosides previously reported. IC50 values were determined but, in general, exceeded surfactant concentrations that are found in the environment. These data demonstrate the promising nature of these molecules as green alternatives to petrochemical surfactants.

Abstract
Development of many branches of industry has stimulated the search for new, effective surfactants with interesting properties. Potential use of alkyl glucose derivatives on a large scale, raises questions about the possible risks associated with their entry into the natural environment. To be able to evaluate this risk, the aim of the study was to determine the physicochemical properties of octyl d-glucopyranoside and its three derivatives: N-(octyl d-glucopyranosiduronyl)aspartic acid, N-(octyl d-glucopyranosiduronyl)glicyne and octyl d-glucopyranosiduronic acid. Moreover, their biodegradability by pure bacterial strains and biocenosis present in river water was examined. While descriptions of sugar-based surfactants on microbial cells are limited, the essential element of the study was to determine the effect of surfactants on cell surface properties of microorganisms isolated from activated sludge and compare it to the effects of the petroleum based surfactants and the surfactants produced from renewable materials. The results obtained indicate that physicochemical properties of surface active agents differ depending on the presence of functional groups in the surfactants molecules. What is more, the presence of amino acid substituent in the derivatives of octyl d-glucopyranoside resulted in a slight decrease in the surfactants biodegradation efficiency, in comparison to the compounds that did not contain such a substituent, prolonging this process from 5 to 10 days. Interestingly, even relatively slightly different derivatives modified the cell surface properties in a different way. Importantly, the surfactants based on octyl d-glucopyranoside have less negative impact on environmental microorganism and better biodegradability than the surfactant synthesized from petroleum products.

Abstract
Pentopyranoside and 6-deoxyhexopyranosides, such as those from d-xylose, l-arabinose and l-fucose are components of natural products, oligosaccharides or polysaccharides. Lewis acid promoted anomerisation of some of their alkyl O- and S-glycopyranosides is reported here. SnCl4 was more successful than TiCl4, with the latter giving the glycosyl chloride by-product in some cases, and both were superior to BF3OEt2. Kinetics study using 1H NMR spectroscopy showed an order of reactivity: O-xylopyranoside > O-arabinopyranoside > O-fucopyranoside. Benzoylated glycosides were more reactive than acetylated glycosides. The reactivity of S-glycosides was greater than that of O-glycosides for both arabinose and fucose derivatives; the reactivity of O- and S-xylopyranosides was similar. The highest stereoselectivities were observed for fucopyranosides. The β-d-xylopyranoside and α-l-arabinopyranoside reactants are conformationally more flexible than β-l-fucopyranosides.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Emerging applications of carbohydrate/cationic surfactant mixtures require not only synergistic mixing, but also accessible sugar headgroups at the exterior of micelles. A previous study showed that the glucoside headgroups of octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside aggregate at the interior of mixed micelles with equimolar cetyltrimethylammonium bromide rather than mixing with trimethylammonium groups at the corona. The current study tests the hypothesis that structural characteristics of the surfactants (the relative lengths of the alkyl tails and the type of linker) can be tuned to shift the carbohydrate groups to micelle surfaces. EXPERIMENTS The structural arrangement of 30 mM equimolar mixed micelle solutions in D2O is investigated using NMR. The dynamics in different regions are probed using 1H spin-lattice (T1) and spin-spin (T2) relaxation measurements, and relative positioning by nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY). Additional micellar properties are determined using solvatochromic fluorescent probes. FINDINGS Matching surfactant alkyl tail lengths is found ineffective at "pushing out" the carbohydrate headgroups due to a large mismatch in interactions between the headgroups and D2O. However, inserting a novel polar triazole group between the carbohydrate head group and the hydrophobic tail (e.g. in n-octyl-β-d-xylopyranoside) using click chemistry is able to "pull out" the carbohydrate, thus giving accessible sugar moieties at the surface of mixed micelles.

Abstract
A group of four selected non-ionic surfactants based on carbohydrates, namely octyl d-xyloside (C8X), nonyl d-xyloside (C9X), decyl d-xyloside (C10X) and dodecyl d-xyloside (C12X), have been investigated to accomplish a better understanding of their physico-chemical properties as well as biological activities. The surface-active properties, such as critical micelle concentration (CMC), emulsion and foam stability, the impact of the compounds on cell surface hydrophobicity and cell membrane permeability together with their toxicity on the selected bacterial strains have been determined as well. The studied group of surfactants showed high surface-active properties allowing a decrease in the surface tension to values below 25 mN m-1 for dodecyl d-xyloside at the CMC. The investigated compounds did not have any toxic influence on two Pseudomonas bacterial strains at concentrations below 25 mg L-1. The studied long-chain alkyl xylosides influenced both the cell inner membrane permeability and the cell surface hydrophobicity. Furthermore, the alkyl chain length, as well as the surfactant concentration, had a significant impact on the modifications of the cell surface properties. The tested non-ionic surfactants exhibited strong surface-active properties accompanied by the significant influence on growth and properties of Pseudomonas bacteria cells.

Abstract
Xylose is one of the few monosaccharidic building blocks that are used by mammalian cells. In comparison with other monosaccharides, xylose is rather unusual and, so far, only found in two different mammalian structures, i.e. in the Notch receptor and as the linker between protein and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains in proteoglycans. Interestingly, simple soluble xylopyranosides can not only initiate the biosynthesis of soluble GAG chains but also function as inhibitors of important enzymes in the biosynthesis of proteoglycans. Furthermore, xylose is a major constituent of hemicellulosic xylans and thus one of the most abundant carbohydrates on Earth. Altogether, this has spurred a strong interest in xylose chemistry. The scope of this review is to describe synthesis of xylopyranosyl donors, as well as protective group chemistry, modifications, and conformational analysis of xylose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Simple glycoside surfactants represent a class of chemicals that are produced from renewable raw materials. They are considered to be environmentally safe and, therefore, are increasingly used as pharmaceuticals, detergents, and personal care products. Although they display low to moderate toxicity in cells in culture, the underlying mechanisms of surfactant-mediated cytotoxicity are poorly investigated. RESULTS We synthesized a series of triazole-linked (fluoro)alkyl β-glucopyranosides using the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne reaction, one of many popular "click" reactions that enable efficient preparation of structurally diverse compounds, and investigate the toxicity of this novel class of surfactant in the Jurkat cell line. Similar to other carbohydrate surfactants, the cytotoxicity of the triazole-linked alkyl β-glucopyranosides was low, with IC50 values decreasing from 1198 to 24 μM as the hydrophobic tail length increased from 8 to 16 carbons. The two alkyl β-glucopyranosides with the longest hydrophobic tails caused apoptosis by mechanisms involving mitochondrial depolarization and caspase-3 activation. CONCLUSIONS Triazole-linked, glucose-based surfactants 4a-g and other carbohydrate surfactants may cause apoptosis, and not necrosis, at low micromolar concentrations via induction of the intrinsic apoptotic cascade; however, additional studies are needed to fully explore the molecular mechanisms of their toxicity. Graphical AbstractTriazole-linked, glucose-based surfactants cause apoptosis, and not necrosis, at low micromolar concentrations via induction of the intrinsic apoptotic cascade.

Abstract
The β-xylosidase encoding gene (XsidB) of the extremely thermophilic bacterium Geobacillus thermodenitrificans has been cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The homotrimeric recombinant XsidB is of 204.0kDa, which is optimally active at 60°C and pH 7.0 with T1/2 of 58min at 70°C. The β-xylosidase remains unaffected in the presence of most metal ions and organic solvents. The Km [p-nitrophenyl β-xyloside (pNPX)], Vmax and kcat values of the enzyme are 2×10(-3)M, 1250μmolesmg(-1)min(-1) and 13.20×10(5)min(-1), respectively. The enzyme catalyzes transxylosylation reactions in the presence of alcohols as acceptors. The pharmaceutically important β-methyl-d-xylosides could be produced using pNPX as the donor and methanol as acceptor. The products of transxylosylation were identified by TLC and HPLC, and the structure was confirmed by (1)H NMR analysis. The enzyme is also useful in synthesizing transxylosylation products from the wheat bran hydrolysate.

Abstract
The use of surfactant headgroups for interfacial imprinting is established as a simple and tunable approach to create molecularly imprinted silica nanoparticles based on a modification of the Stöber method. Adsorption of D-glucose and D-xylose (initial concentrations ranging from 0.139 to 1.67 mol/l) is measured on silica nanoparticles created by the addition of a glucose-based surfactant (n-octyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (C8G1)) or surfactant mixtures (C8G1 and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)) to Stöber particles shortly after their precipitation. Silica particles synthesized in the presence of C8G1 as an imprinting surfactant have a significantly higher affinity for glucose over xylose (as much as 3.25 times greater at 0.25 M saccharide), and an enhanced affinity for glucose relative to non-imprinted silica particles (as much as 4 times greater at 0.25 M), which adsorb glucose and xylose similarly. Glucose imprinting is significantly enhanced using a surfactant mixture of 1:1 C8G1/CTAB. The interfacial activity of the nonionic imprinting surfactant at the silica surface is suggested to be improved by the presence of interfacial cationic CTAB, which is driven to the silica surface through electrostatic interactions. The concept of imprinting through the interaction of surfactant headgroups with the soft surface of silica particles is supported by the importance of the time of addition of the surfactants. The greatest enhancement in glucose adsorption is observed when the surfactants are added 1 min after precursor addition (at the onset of aggregated particle formation, as indicated by solution turbidity) and the silica affinity for glucose decreases with the time of surfactant addition. The versatility of the surfactant imprinting of Stöber particles is demonstrated by the enhanced adsorption of xylose relative to glucose on particles imprinted using a 1:1 mixture of n-octyl-β-D-xylopyranoside and CTAB, suggesting that the process can be customized to selectively adsorb target molecules of interest.

Abstract
Here, we tested seven 2-acylated-1,4-hydronaphthoquinones for their cytotoxic effects on a panel of cancer lymphoma/leukemia cells and compared to a non-cancer origin cell line. Several naphthohydroquinones exhibited selective cytotoxic effects on lymphoma/leukemia cells with lowest activity on non-cancer cells. The mode of cell death induced by an acylated naphthohydroquinone, which has a long alkyl chain, was found to be via apoptosis. Furthermore, the naphthohydroquinone provoked mitochondria depolarization and activation of its downstream effector, caspase-3, thus implicating the intrinsic apoptotic pathway as its mechanism to exert cell death.

Abstract
The stability of fluorotelomer alcohols under basic conditions was studied. HF elimination across the CF2-CH2 junction is shown to be facilitated by an intramolecular hydrogen bond, while solvation is the key determinant in the stability of alcohols of various perfluoroalkyl lengths. Finally, fluorotelomer alcohols can be rendered kinetically stable if either the alcohol or the base has low solubility in the reaction medium.

Abstract
We are interested in the development of surfactants derived from hemicellulosic biomass, as they are potential components in pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and other detergents. Such surfactants should exhibit low toxicity in mammalian cells. In this study we synthesized a series of alkyl or fluoroalkyl β-xylopyranosides from azides and an alkyne using the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne (CuAAC) 'click' reaction in 4 steps from xylose. The purified products were evaluated for both their surfactant properties, and for their biocompatibility. Unlike other carbohydrate-based surfactants, liquid-crystalline behavior was not observed by differential scanning calorimetry. The triazole-containing β-xylopyranosides with short (6 carbons) and long (>12 carbons) chains exhibited no toxicity at concentrations ranging from 1 to 1000 μM. Triazole-containing β-xylopyranosides with 8, 10, or 12 carbons caused toxicity via apoptosis, with CC50 values ranging from 26-890 μM. The two longest chain compounds did form stable monolayers at the air-water interface over a range of temperatures, although a brief transition to an the unstable monolayer was observed.
