Abstract
The interest in shrimp shell valorization has been growing in line with sustainability goals. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to obtain chitosan from shrimp shell using ultrasound followed by subcritical water treatment. Ultrasonication of shells was performed at 600 and 1200 W for 5 min. Then, shells were hydrolyzed at 140-260 °C and 50 bar for 10-60 min followed by demineralization using citric acid, bleaching using hydrogen peroxide and deacetylation using sodium hydroxide solution. The highest deproteination (80.93 %) was obtained by ultrasonication at 1200 W/5 min followed by subcritical water hydrolysis at 260 °C/50 bar/60 min, where the residue with a yield of 10.56 %, whiteness index of 60.42, degree of deacetylation of 64.27 %, relative crystallinity of 32.66 % and similar functional groups to the commercial sample was obtained. These results indicated that the combination of ultrasound with subcritical water is promising to valorize shrimp shell towards production of value-added compounds.

Abstract
In recent decades, extensive research has been directed toward mitigating microbial contamination and preventing biofilm formation. However, many conventional antibiofilm methods rely on hazardous and toxic substances, neglecting potential risks to human health and the environment. Moreover, these approaches often rely on single-strategy mechanisms, utilizing either bactericidal or fouling-resistant agents, which have shown limited efficacy in long-term biofilm suppression. In this study, we propose an efficient and sustainable biofilm-resistant slippery hybrid slippery composite. This composite integrates nontoxic and environmentally friendly materials including chitosan, silicone oil-infused polydimethylsiloxane, and mesoporous silica nanoparticles in a synergistic manner. Leveraging the bacteria-killing properties of chitosan and the antifouling capabilities of the silicone oil layer, the hybrid composite exhibits robust antibiofilm performance against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, the inclusion of mesoporous silica nanoparticles enhances the oil absorption capacity and self-replenishing properties, ensuring exceptional biofilm inhibition even under harsh conditions such as exposure to high shear flow and prolonged incubation (7 days). This approach offers promising prospects for developing effective biofilm-resistant materials with a reduced environmental impact and improved long-term performance.

Abstract
A range of issues related to sustainability in the agrifood industry have spurred interest in mass production of insects as human food and animal feed alternatives. This rapidly evolving sector addresses several challenges, including the management of food waste or agrifood by-products and the production of alternative animal proteins demonstrating low environmental impacts that improve sector circularity. The mass production of insects on agrifood processing wastes or by-products represents an opportunity to address these challenges. While the production of insects offers prospects for sustainable protein production, a major side stream is the production of frass or larval excrement including uneaten feed and chitin-rich exuviae (derived from multiple larval moults). The production of each tonne of edible insects generates 2 to 4 tonnes of frass with an interesting potential in agriculture versus traditional organic amendments (compost, manure, biochar). This review aims to demonstrate the characteristics of frass, its common harvest and conditioning methods, its optimal application rates for planting crops, the mechanisms by which it can protect plants against biotic and abiotic stresses and demystify the risks and potential associated with its application in agriculture. The characteristics of frass are compared with those of conventional fertilizers or other. This report also compiles the Canadian, US and European regulatory frameworks as a novel plant fertilizer and aims to pave the way for future research necessary for its valorization in plant production.

Abstract
As one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides that possess good biological activity, chitosan is extracted from chitin. Its application in the food field is being increasingly valued. However, chitosan extraction is difficult, and its poor solubility limits its application. At present, the extraction methods include the acid-base method, new chemical methods, and biological methods. The extraction rates of chitin/chitosan are 4-55%, 13-14%, and 15-28%, respectively. Different chemical modifications have different effects on chitosan, making it applicable in different fields. This article reviews and compares the extraction and chemical modification methods of chitosan, emphasizing the importance of green extraction methods. Finally, the application prospects of chitosan in the food industry are discussed. This will promote the understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of different extraction methods for chitosan as well as the relationship between modification and application, providing valuable insights for the future development of chitosan.

Abstract
The genomic analysis of Streptomyces sp. KCCM12257 presented 233 CAZyme genes with a predominant glycosyl hydrolase family. This contributes degradation of various polysaccharides including chitin and chitosan, and other promising candidates for the production of different oligosaccharides. We screened the strain providing different polysaccharides as a sole source of carbon and strain KCCM12257, showed higher activity towards colloidal chitosan. Further, we identified and characterized a new chitosanase (MDI5907146) of GH46 family. There was no activity towards chitin, carboxymethylcellulose, or even with chitosan powder. This enzyme acts on colloidal chitosan and hydrolyzes it down into monoacetyl chitobiose, which consists of two glucosamine units with an acetyl group attached to them. The maximum enzyme activity was observed at pH 6.5 and 40 °C using colloidal chitosan as a substrate. The Co2+ metal ions almost double the reaction as compared to other metal ions. The dissociation constant (Km) and of colloidal chitosan (≥90 % and ≥75%DD) were 3.03 mg/ml and 5.01 mg/ml respectively, while maximum velocity (Vmax) values were found to be 36 mg/ml, and 30 μM/μg/min, respectively. Similarly, catalytic efficiency (Kcat/Km) of colloidal chitosan with ≥90 %DD was 1.9 fold higher than colloidal chitosan with ≥75%DD.

Abstract
Nowadays, the exploitation of biopolymers in the industrial sector has become a trend. Chitosan is considered one of the most investigated biopolymers due to its abundance and antibacterial, antifungal, and antibiofilm activities. In this work, chitosan was chemically extracted from shrimp shells. Solutions of HCl 1 M, NaOH 4 M, and NaOH 15 M were used for the demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation process, respectively. The utilized methods of characterization (FTIR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and SEC-MALS) revealed that the obtained chitosan has a moderate degree of deacetylation and low molecular weight (DDA = 74% and Mw = 72.14 kDa). The microdilution method and inoculation of solid medium were carried out to assess the antibiofilm action of chitosan against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus hirae, Escherichia coli, Rhizopus sp., and Aspergillus sp. which are known as foodborne microorganisms. Results showed that the produced chitosan at 1 g/L inhibits between 63.44 and 99.75% of the microbial biofilm depending on the tested strains. These promising results confirm the potential deployment of the obtained chitosan in the food industry as a replacement for synthetic antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Bioactive polysaccharide, carboxymethyl chitosan-quercetin (CMCS-q) was prepared by a one-step reaction utilizing Schiff base chemistry. Notably, the presented conjugation method involves neither radical reactions nor auxiliary coupling agents. Physicochemical properties and bioactivity of the modified polymer were studied and compared to those of the pristine carboxymethyl chitosan, CMCS. The modified CMCS-q demonstrated antioxidant activity by TEAC assay and antifungal activity by inhibiting spore germination of plant pathogen Botrytis cynerea. Then, CMCS-q was applied as an active coating on fresh-cut apples. The treatment resulted in enhanced firmness, inhibited browning and improved microbiological quality of the food product. The presented conjugation method allows retaining antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of quercetin moiety in the modified biopolymer. This method can be further used as a platform for binding ketone/aldehyde-containing polyphenols and other natural compounds to form various bioactive polymers.

Abstract
This research aims to introduce a low-cost, non-commercial culture medium and optimize the operating conditions for biological chitin extraction from green tiger shrimp waste in the Persian Gulf zone. For this purpose, the two most commonly used microorganisms, Bacillus licheniformis and Lactobacillus plantarum, were obtained to deproteinize and demineralize the shrimp shells within both culture mediums using a successive two-stage process. It was found that the proposed non-commercial culture medium was more efficient than the purchased and ready-to-use commercial medium and increased deproteinization and demineralization efficiency by 9 % and 11 %, respectively. According to the optimization, which was performed using a response surface methodology based on a central composite design, the demineralization model is more complicated than the deproteinization model. The presented model predicted deproteinization and demineralization yields with good accuracy. The FTIR results revealed that shrimp shells and chitin have similar main functional groups, while the degree of acetylation of the extracted chitin was 62.26 %. SEM results illustrated the formation of microfibrils and the chitin structure's porosity. The XRD data showed that the crystallinity index of chitin was 93.9 %. Besides, the thermal stability of the extracted chitin, with a maximum degradation temperature of 380 °C is comparable with the literature data.

Abstract
Petroleum-based films have contributed immensely to various environmental issues. Developing green-based films from carbohydrate polymers is crucial for addressing the harms encountered. However, some limitations exist on their property, processibility, and applicability that prohibit their processing for further developments. This review discusses the potential carbohydrate polymers and their sources, film preparation methods, such as solvent-casting, tape-casting, extrusion, and thermo-mechanical compressions for green-based films using various biological polymers with their merits and demerits. Research outcomes revealed that the essential characteristics improvement achieved by incorporating different metallic nanoparticles has significantly reformed the properties of biofilms, including crystallization, mechanical stability, thermal stability, barrier function, and antimicrobial activity. The property-enhanced bio-based films made with nanoparticles are potentially interested in replacing fossil-based films in various areas, including food-packaging applications. The review paves a new way for the commercial use of numerous carbohydrate polymers to help maintain a sustainable green environment.

Abstract
Disposal of biodegradable waste of seashells leads to an environmental imbalance. A tremendous amount of wastes produced from flourishing shell fish industries while preparing crustaceans for human consumption can be directed towards proper utilization. The review of the present study focuses on these polysaccharides from crustaceans and a few important industrial applications. This review aimed to emphasize the current research on structural analyses and extraction of polysaccharides. The article summarises the properties of chitin, chitosan, and chitooligosaccharides and their derivatives that make them non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible. Different extraction methods of chitin, chitosan, and chitooligosaccharides have been discussed in detail. Additionally, this information outlines possible uses for derivatives of chitin, chitosan, and chitooligosaccharides in the environmental, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and food industries. Additionally, it is essential to the textile, cosmetic, and enzyme-immobilization industries. This review focuses on new, insightful suggestions for raising the value of crustacean shell waste by repurposing a highly valuable material.

Abstract
Chitosan derived from chitin gas gathered much interest as a biopolymer due to its known and possible broad applications. Chitin is a nitrogen-enriched polymer abundantly present in the exoskeletons of arthropods, cell walls of fungi, green algae, and microorganisms, radulae and beaks of molluscs and cephalopods, etc. Chitosan is a promising candidate for a wide variety of applications due to its macromolecular structure and its unique biological and physiological properties, including solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and reactivity. Chitosan and its derivatives have been known to be applicable in medicine, pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, agriculture, the textile and paper industries, the energy industry, and industrial sustainability. More specifically, their use in drug delivery, dentistry, ophthalmology, wound dressing, cell encapsulation, bioimaging, tissue engineering, food packaging, gelling and coating, food additives and preservatives, active biopolymeric nanofilms, nutraceuticals, skin and hair care, preventing abiotic stress in flora, increasing water availability in plants, controlled release fertilizers, dye-sensitised solar cells, wastewater and sludge treatment, and metal extraction. The merits and demerits associated with the use of chitosan derivatives in the above applications are elucidated, and finally, the key challenges and future perspectives are discussed in detail.

Abstract
Edible insects have recently attracted research attention due to their nutritional value and low environmental footprint. Tenebrio molitor larva was the first insect species to be classified by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as safe for human consumption. However, it is thought that the incorporation of edible insect as an ingredient in a food product would be more appealing to consumers than being visible. The aim of the present study was to determine the physicochemical properties of the larvae meal and protein concentrates. Different methods to extract and recover proteins from defatted (DF) Tenebrio molitor larvae were applied; i.e., alkaline extraction (DF-ASP); isoelectric precipitation after alkaline extraction (DF-AIP); and NaCl treatment (DF-SSP), and the obtained protein fractions were characterized. The DF-ASP exhibited the highest protein extraction/recovery efficiency (>60%), while it was the most effective in decreasing the interfacial tension at the oil/water (o/w) interface. The DF-AIP had the highest protein content (75.1%) and absolute values of ζ-potential and the best ability to retain water (10.54 g/g) and stabilize emulsions at pH 3.0. The DF-SSP protein preparation had the highest oil binding capacity (8.62%) and solubility (~88%) at acidic pHs and the highest emulsifying activity (~86 m2/g). Electrophoresis of the protein preparations revealed proteins with different molecular weights, while the protein secondary structure was dominated by β-structures and α-helix. Protein concentrates with different properties were able to be recovered from Tenebrio molitor larvae, that could affect their interactions with other food ingredients and their behavior during processing or storage. These findings would be valuable guidance for the technological exploitation of larvae protein preparations in the development of food formulations.

Abstract
The current study aims to develop eco-friendly and economical chitosans with a wide range of applications using organic acids for shrimp shells demineralization. Chitosan samples were extracted from shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) shells and the demineralization step was performed with three organic acids (citric, acetic, and lactic) and two mineral acids (hydrochloric and sulfuric). The chitosans were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chitosans’ physicochemical properties were also determined. The characteristic bands and functional groups of the chitosans were identified by FTIR spectra. The chitosans’ crystallinity order was as follows: ChHCl > ChCitric > ChH2SO4 > ChLactic > ChAcetic. The chitosans’ morphological characteristics revealed a smooth surface and fibrous structures with pores. Chitosans extracted by organic acids showed the highest extraction yields. ChHCl and ChCitric had higher degrees of deacetylation values; 83.67% and 81.47%, respectively. The solubility was proportional to the degree of deacetylation. Furthermore, ChH2SO4 and ChCitric had lower molecular weight values; 149 kDa and 183 kDa, respectively. Organic acids are as effective as mineral acids for shrimp shells demineralization. The developed process opens up possibilities to produce chitin and chitosan in a more eco-friendly way and at a lower cost in many industrial sectors.

Abstract
Crustacean shells are a sustainable source of chitin. Extracting chitin from crustacean shells is ongoing research, much of which is devoted to devising a sustainable process that yields high-quality chitin with minimal waste. Chemical and biological methods have been used extensively for this purpose; more recently, methods based on ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents have been explored. Extracted chitin can be converted into chitosan or nanochitin. Once chitin is obtained and modified into the desired form, it can be used in a wide array of applications, including as a filler material, in adsorbents, and as a component in biomaterials, among others. Describing the extraction of chitin, synthesis of chitosan and nanochitin, and applications of these materials is the aim of this review. The first section of this review summarizes and compares common chitin extraction methods, highlighting the benefits and shortcomings of each, followed by descriptions of methods to convert chitin into chitosan and nanochitin. The second section of this review discusses some of the wide range of applications of chitin and its derivatives.

Abstract
The recent interest in food biopackaging is showing an increasing trend, especially in the development of antimicrobial coatings and films. The focus of this study is to assess the potential application of ginger (Zingiber officinale) essential oil (GEO) to polysaccharide films based on chitosan (CHf) and their utilization as an active edible packaging. The films were characterized by different instrumental techniques, and data indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) in the chemical composition of the samples. Forty-seven active compounds from ginger rhizomes were identified in the examined essential oil by gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Fourier transforms infrared spectra (FT-IR) confirmed an interaction between the hydroxyl groups of the phenolic compounds of the essential oil and the amine groups of the bioactive matrix, as shown by the peaks at wavenumbers 1639 cm−1 and 1558 cm−1. X-ray diffraction data suggested a lower crystallinity in the CHf due to the addition of GEO. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis revealed that the CHf possessed high thermal stability, especially when different concentrations of GEO were added. The bioactive CHf showed distinct activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus sp., Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, thus improving the antimicrobial activity to these films. The results provide a comprehensive insight into the importance of films with incorporated EOs as novel types of active food packaging. Antimicrobial food packaging is one of the most promising kinds of active packaging, and acts to reduce, inhibit, or retard any microorganism growth that could contaminate packaged food items.

Abstract
We selected eight kinds of chitosan fibers to characterize and analyze their composition, surface morphology, and mechanical properties. Crucially, we investigated their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans and the dependence on the molecular weight (Mw) and the degree of deacetylation (DD). On that basis, the relationship between antibacterial activity and Mw and DD can be established. Finally, the antibacterial mechanism of chitosan fiber was obtained. The results show that the inhibition rate of samples I, K, L, and M against Staphylococcus aureus first increased and then decreased with the increase of Mw, and their bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli decreased with the increase of Mw when the DD was similar. This study provides an effective strategy for characterizing the chitosan fiber and the resultant relationship between antibacterial property and structural parameters that may benefit the enhancement of antibacterial activity and application in antibacterial textiles.

Abstract
The high molecular weight of chitin, as a biopolymer, challenges its extraction due to its insolubility in the solvents. Also, chitosan, as the N-deacetylated form of chitin, can be employed as a primary material for different industries. The low mechanical stability and poor plasticity of chitosan films, as a result of incompatible interaction between chitosan and the used solvent, have limited its industrialization. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), as novel solvents, can solve the extraction difficulties of chitin, and the low mechanical stability and weak plasticity of chitosan films. Also, DESs can be considered for the different chitosan and chitin productions, including chitin nanocrystal and nanofiber, N,N,N-trimethyl-chitosan, chitosan-based imprinted structures, and DES-chitosan-based beads and monoliths. This review aims to focus on the preparation and characterization (chemistry and morphology) of DES-chitin-based and DES-chitosan-based structures to understand the influence of the incorporation of DESs into the chitin and chitosan structure.

Abstract
Chitin, the second most abundant biopolymer on earth, is utilised in a wide range of applications including wastewater treatment, drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, and stem cell technology among others. This review compares the most prevalent strategies for the extraction of chitin from crustacean sources including chemical methods that involve the use of harsh solvents and emerging methods using deep eutectic solvents (DES). In recent years, a significant amount of research has been carried out to identify and develop environmentally friendly processes which might facilitate the replacement of problematic chemicals utilised in conventional chemical extraction strategies with DES. This article provides an overview of different experimental parameters used in the DES-mediated extraction of chitin while also comparing the purity and yields of associated extracts with conventional methods. As part of this review, we compare the relative proportions of chitin and extraneous materials in different marine crustaceans. We show the importance of the species of crustacean shell in relation to chitin purity and discuss the significance of varying process parameters associated with different extraction strategies. The review also describes some recent applications associated with chitin. Following on from this review, we suggest recommendations for further investigation into chitin extraction, especially for experimental research pertaining to the enhancement of the "environmentally friendly" nature of the process. It is hoped that this article will provide researchers with a platform to better understand the benefits and limitations of DES-mediated extractions thereby further promoting knowledge in this area.

Abstract
There are a lot of coal cinder and dust in the development of coal resource-based cities. Improper handling will cause dust flying, which has a great impact on urban residents and the environment. The purpose of this research is to follow the principle of waste recycling, to use waste shrimp shells to extract chitosan as a raw material, to carry out graft polymerization with acrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol-1788, and to carry out amidation crosslinking reactions with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid to produce products. The results showed that the degree of deacetylation of chitosan reached 85% with the optimized extraction method, which greatly shortened the process cycle. Through orthogonal experiments and osmotic wetting experiments, the best preparation process was determined. The reaction process, structure of the product and adhesive structure of the solidified layer were analyzed by FTIR, XPS and SEM. The thermal stability of the product was analyzed by thermogravimetry. Relevant performance tests showed that the product had good adhesion with dust, the hardness of the solidified layer could reach 98 HA, and the dust fixation rate was 92.67% when the wind speed was 15-18 m/s. It has the advantage of circulating dust fixation, which improves the utilization rate of resources.

Abstract
In recent years, the textile industry has been seeking to develop innovative products. It is a good choice to organically combine materials with superior functional characteristics and commercial textiles to form products with excellent performance. In particular, textiles made of biological functional materials are often beneficial to human health, which is an interesting research direction. As a biopolymer material, chitosan has the advantages of strong availability, low cost, excellent safety, outstanding performance, etc., particularly the antibacterial property, and has broad application prospects in the textile field. This review provides an overview of the latest literature and summarizes recent innovations and state-of-the-art technologies that can add value to textiles. To this end, preparation of chitosan fiber, synthesis of chitosan nanofiber, antibacterial activity of chitosan fiber, antibacterial activity of chitosan nanofiber, etc., will be discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of chitosan-based materials used in textiles are evaluated. Importantly, this review can not only help researchers understand the development status of antibacterial textiles, but also help researchers discover and solve problems in this field through comparative reading.

Abstract
Environmental pollution by dyes molecules has become a subject of intensive research in recent years due to their hazardous effects on human health, organisms, and animals. Effective treatment and removal of dye molecules from the environmental matrices and water sources are of supreme concern. The deployment of cheap, safe, green, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials to remove these pollutants from water is the main challenge during the last decades. Chitosan and its derivatives/composites, as a cheap, easily available, and environmentally friendly sorbent, have attracted increasing attention for the removal of dye molecules. This review article focuses on the application of chitosan and chitosan-based smart adsorbents for the removal of dyes. Recent methods for the preparation of chitosan-based composites and their application in the removal of dyes are discussed. Moreover, the possible mechanisms for the interaction of chitosan and chitosan-based adsorbents with dyes molecules were evaluated. Finally, future prospects of using chitosan as an adsorbent for the removal of dye molecules are directed.

Abstract
Chitosan is obtained from chitin that in turn is recovered from marine crustacean wastes. The recovery methods and their varying types and the advantages of the recovery methods are briefly discussed. The bioactive properties of chitosan, which emphasize the unequivocal deliverables contained by this biopolymer, have been concisely presented. The variations of chitosan and its derivatives and their unique properties are discussed. The antioxidant properties of chitosan have been presented and the need for more work targeted towards harnessing the antioxidant property of chitosan has been emphasized. Some portions of the crustacean waste are being converted to chitosan; the possibility that all of the waste can be used for harnessing this versatile multifaceted product chitosan is projected in this review. The future of chitosan recovery from marine crustacean wastes and the need to improve in this area of research, through the inclusion of nanotechnological inputs have been listed under future perspective.

Abstract
Calcium chloride, methanol, and water in stoichiometric amounts were used for the extraction of chitosan from shrimp residues (Farfantepenaeus aztecus). Chitosan was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD, SEM, elemental analysis, and 13C-NMR. The yield of chitosan with medium molecular mass was 65.90% (mass of extracted chitosan/mass of shrimp residues when the extraction was assisted with stirring at 60 °C for 20 min and ultrasound at 60 °C for 30 min. The extracted chitosan had a % DD of 64.06 and 65.87% (13C-NMR and FT-IR, respectively), thermal decomposition stage at 375 °C, porous on its surface, and calcite as the main mineral found. The experimental results revealed that the saturated solution of calcium chloride in methanol and water could be an alternative for the extraction of mineralized chitosan from shrimp residues with thermal stability and porosity.

Abstract
Chitooligosaccharides (COS) and N-acetyl glucosamine (GlcNAc) are currently of enormous relevance to pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetics, food, and agriculture industries due to their wide range of biological activities, which include antimicrobial, antitumor, antioxidant, anticoagulant, wound healing, immunoregulatory, and hypocholesterolemic effects. A range of methods have been developed for the synthesis of COS with a specific degree of polymerization along with high production titres. In this respect, chemical, enzymatic, and microbial means, along with modern genetic manipulation techniques, have been extensively explored; however no method has been able to competently produce defined COS and GlcNAc in a mono-system approach. Henceforth, the chitin research has turned toward increased exploration of chemoenzymatic processes for COS and GlcNAc generation. Recent developments in the area of green chemicals, mainly ionic liquids, proved vital for the specified COS and GlcNAc synthesis with better yield and purity. Moreover, engineering of COS and GlcNAc to generate novel derivatives viz. carboxylated, sulfated, phenolic acid conjugated, amino derived COS, etc., further improved their biological activities. Consequently, chemoenzymatic synthesis and engineering of COS and GlcNAc emerged as a useful approach to lead the biologically-active compound-based biomedical research to an advanced prospect in the forthcoming era.

Adsorption Strategy for Removal of Harmful Cyanobacterial Species Microcystis aeruginosa Using Chitosan Fiber. SUSTAINABILITY 2020. Abstract
Microcystis aeruginosa is one of the predominant species responsible for cyanobacterial-harmful algal blooms (Cyano-HABs) in water bodies. Cyano-HABs pose a growing number of serious threats to the environment and public health. Therefore, the demand for developing safe and eco-friendly solutions to control Cyano-HABs is increasing. In the present study, the adsorptive strategy using chitosan was applied to remove M. aeruginosa cells from aqueous phases. Using a simple immobilization process, chitosan could be fabricated as a fiber sorbent (chitosan fiber, CF). By application of CF, almost 89% of cyanobacterial cells were eliminated, as compared to those in the control group. Field emission scanning electron microscopy proved that the M. aeruginosa cells were mainly attached to the surface of the sorbent, which was correlated well with the measurement of the surface area of the fiber. We tested the hypothesis that massive applications of the fabricated CF to control Cyano-HABs might cause environmental damage. However, the manufactured CF displayed negligible toxicity. Moreover, we observed that the release of cyanotoxins and microcystins (MCs), during the removal process using CF, could be efficiently prevented by a firm attachment of the M. aeruginosa cells without cell lysis. Our results suggest the possibility of controlling Cyano-HABs using a fabricated CF as a non-toxic and eco-friendly agent for scaled-up applications.
