Abstract
Ocypode quadrata, a Ghost crab species found along the western Atlantic coast, is considered a bioindicator of anthropogenic impact on sandy beaches. Ghost Crabbing, a touristic activity in which ghost crabs are chased just for fun, is a potentially threatening activity for this crab. In crustaceans, metabolites such as glucose and lactate, and the gene expression of crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) and heat shock proteins (HSPs) increase when the animals are exposed to several types of stress, including alterations in temperature, salinity, or exposure to xenobiotics. This work was developed to identify if being chased by humans would affect these markers of stress in this species of crab. The effects of chasing stress on hemolymph and tissue metabolites and the gene expression levels of CHH and HSP70 were investigated. The levels of lactate in the hemolymph of stressed crabs were six times higher than those of control crabs immediately after chasing and decreased progressively during recovery, indicating an active anaerobic metabolism during the stress. On the contrary, glucose levels in the hemolymph of the stressed crabs increased progressively from 30 to 60 min after chasing, indicating an inverse correlation between glucose and lactate and the conversion of lactate to glucose by gluconeogenesis. In stressed crabs, the levels of triglycerides in the hemolymph decreased 30 min after chasing, while the opposite tended to occur in the hepatopancreas, indicating that during recovery, the crabs use triglycerides as energy source to sustain aerobic metabolism. Finally, this study demonstrates that ghost crabs are stressed by minimum human contact and that "ghost crabbing" must not be encouraged as a tourist activity.

Abstract
Dissolved oxygen (DO) and water temperature vary in coastal environments. In tropical regions, the ability of aquatic ectotherms to cope with hypoxia and high-temperature interactive effects is fundamental for their survival. The mechanisms underlying both hypoxia and thermal tolerance are known to be interconnected, therefore, the idea of cross-tolerance between both environmental stressors has been put forward. We investigated the combined role of hypoxia and temperature changes on the physiological responses of blue crab Callinectes sapidus living in the southern Gulf of Mexico. We measured oxygen consumption, plasmatic biochemical indicators, total hemocyte count (THC), and antioxidant activity biomarkers in muscle and gill tissues of blue crab acclimated to moderate hypoxia or normoxia and exposed to a thermal fluctuation or a constant temperature, the former including a temperature beyond the optimum range. Animals recovered their routine metabolic rate (RMR) after experiencing thermal stress in normoxia, reflecting physiological plasticity to temperature changes. In hypoxia, the effect of increasing temperature was modulated as reflected in the RMR and plasmatic biochemical indicators concentration, and the THC did not suggest significant alterations in the health status. In both DO, the antioxidant defense system was active against oxidative (OX) damage to lipids and proteins. However, hypoxia was associated with an increase in the amelioration of OX damage. These results show that C. sapidus can modulate its thermal response in a stringent dependency with DO, supporting the idea of local acclimatization to tropical conditions, and providing insights into its potential as invasive species.

Abstract
The daily rhythm affects a series of physiological functions in crustaceans. To study its effect on the physiological function in Eriocheir sinensis, a crustacean species of high economic value, we analyzed the hemolymph transcriptome during the daily rhythm by high-throughput sequencing. We sampled the hemolymph from crabs at four time points in a single day (06:00, 12:00, 18:00, and 24:00 h) and identified 3,01,661 and 1,03,998 transcripts and unigenes, respectively; some of the unigenes were annotated as core clock genes. Moreover, 15,564 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were divided into nine different clusters. Functional enrichment analysis of DEGs indicated that the molting, metabolism, and immunity processes in E. sinensis were impacted by its daily rhythm. In addition, we mapped the DEGs involved in the daily entrainment pathway. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparative transcriptome analysis of crustacean hemolymph during the day-night cycle, and provides multi-level information for unraveling the finer regulatory effects of the daily cycle in crustaceans.

Abstract
Decapods have successfully colonized changing coastal habitats throughout the world by adapting their behavior, physiology, and biochemistry. Biochemical reserves, such as lipids and fatty acids (FAs), play fundamental roles in this adaptation process. These energy reserves are key for the development of decapods and their composition mainly depends on the type and quality of food available in their habitats. This study evaluated the lipid content and FA composition of three tissues (hepatopancreas, gills, and muscle) in two widely distributed, semi-terrestrial coastal crab species in Chile, Cyclograpsus cinereus from the upper intertidal and Hemigrapsus crenulatus from estuaries. This evaluation aimed to assess the physiological role of the bioenergetic reserves of these crabs, which tolerate fluctuating environmental conditions. Our results showed that both species had a higher lipid content in the hepatopancreas and a lower lipid content in its gills and muscle. All three of the evaluated tissues in C. cinereus showed high contents of saturated fatty acids (SFAs), and its hepatopancreas displayed the highest contents of monounsaturated (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In turn, H. crenulatus had the highest contents of MUFAs and PUFAs in its gills and muscle tissues, including an important amount of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The FA content of C. cinereus may indicate an adaptive physiological response aimed at maintaining its cellular fluid balance during periods of desiccation in the upper intertidal zone. In contrast, the FAs found in H. crenulatus may be linked to the high activity of the sodium‑potassium pump in its gills, in order to maintain osmoregulation in estuaries.

Abstract
Blood glucose is widely used as a physiological parameter for vertebrates and invertebrates. However, its measurement in the field is often difficult due to the need for expensive and non-portable equipment. Point-of-care (POC) devices, originally intended for human use, are increasingly being used for measuring blood parameters of animals in the field. In this regard, POC glucose meters are becoming valuable tools for conservation physiologists, as glucose can be a useful indicator of stress response. In invertebrates, the use of POC glucose meters is still scarce, and no study yet has evaluated their usability in crustaceans and molluscs. We tested if a POC device can be used to measure haemolymph glucose in two widely used models, Leptuca thayeri and Perna perna, compared with a standard laboratory method. The device was unable to measure glucose in P. perna haemolymph due to equipment inaccuracy and low glucose concentration in this species (10.13 ± 6.25 mg/dL). Additionally, despite the device being capable of measuring glucose in L. thayeri haemolymph, Bland-Altman plots showed a strong bias and wide limits of agreement, and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient showed a weak concordance between methods. When simulating experimental conditions, POC results differed from those found using the standard method. We conclude that POC glucose meters are unsuitable for assessing glucose in mussels and should not be used in crabs as results are inaccurate.

Abstract
Environmental and physiological variations influence the steady-state concentration of free oxygen radicals in cells. Because of the seasonal life cycle of Lithodes santolla in the Beagle Channel, a baseline study of the antioxidant physiological variations along the seasons is necessary for a better understanding of its ecophysiology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seasonal variations in gills, hemolymph, muscle and hepatopancreas of the: i) enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione transferase; ii) ascorbic acid and total glutathione; iii) lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation; iv) glucose, proteins and pH. Seasonality found in the antioxidant defense system of L. santolla from the Beagle Channel acts in a collaborative way during the most relevant life cycle phases (reproduction and molting), avoiding a long term oxidative stress. The antioxidant system also shows changes in the enzymatic activities likely caused by the environmental factors, such as low temperatures during winter and spring seasons.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of boat noise on the behavioural and biochemical parameters of the Mediterranean spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas). The experiment was conducted in a tank equipped with a video and audio recording system. 18 experimental trials, assigned to boat noise and control conditions, were performed using lobsters in single and group of 4 specimens. After a 1h habituation period, we audio- and video-recorded the lobsters for 1h. During the experimental phase, the animals assigned to the boat groups were exposed to boat noise pollution (a random sequence of boat noises). Exposure to the noise produced significant variations in locomotor behaviours and haemolymphatic parameters. Our results indicate that the lobsters exposed to boat noises increased significantly their locomotor activities and haemolymphatic bioindicator of stressful conditions such as glucose, total proteins, Hsp70 expression and THC when tested both singly and in groups.

Abstract
The ghost crab, Ocypode quadrata, is found on sandy beaches from the United States to Southern Brazil. Because there is still little information about the metabolism and reproduction of O. quadrata on the southern coast of Brazil, the objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate the effect of seasonal variations on the carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism of O. quadrata at Rondinha Beach, a beach with high anthropogenic activity, and to compare it with data from Siriú Beach, which has less human activity; and (ii) describe the effect of seasonal variations on the histological characteristics of male and female gonads, in order to assess the reproductive capacity of the crabs. The gonads of male crabs showed no significant variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and glycogen levels; however, histological analysis of the testes revealed that they are mature in the summer. In females, the GSI and glycogen values are higher in summer, concomitantly with the presence of mature oocytes. These results suggest that the reproductive peak of O. quadrata occurs in summer. The seasonal analysis of the biochemical parameters, as well as comparison with Siriú Beach, demonstrated that the ghost crabs of Rondinha Beach have a different pattern of metabolism than those of Siriú. This difference may be a consequence of differences in the environmental conditions as well as in the anthropogenic pressures, such as vehicle traffic and the increase in human population at the beach in summer.

Abstract
Sandy beaches comprise one of the most important coastal resources worldwide, providing habitats to threatened vertebrates, supporting underappreciated invertebrate biodiversity, and delivering crucial ecosystem services and economic benefits to mankind. Monitoring of the natural resource condition of sandy beaches and assessments of the ecological impacts of human disturbance are, however, rare on sandy shores. Because a crucial step in developing beach monitoring is to identify and test biological indicators, we evaluated the utility of using population densities of ghost crabs (genus Ocypode) to measure how beach biota respond to human pressures. Densities of crabs--estimated via burrow counts--were quantified at two sites exposed to high and low levels of human disturbance on an urban beach in eastern Australia. Human disturbance consisted of pedestrian trampling and shoreline armouring which led to the loss of dune habitat. Overall, crab numbers were halved in disturbed areas, but contrasts between impact and control sites were not necessarily consistent over time and varied between different levels of the shore: stronger and more consistent effect sizes were recorded on the upper shore than further seawards. In addition to lowering crab densities, human disturbance also caused shifts in intertidal distributions, with a greater proportion of individuals occurring lower on the shore in the impacted beach sections. The number of visible burrow openings also changed in response to weather conditions (temperature and wind). We demonstrate that spatial contrasts of burrow counts are broadly useful to indicate the existence of a human-induced disturbance effect on urban beaches; we also highlight a number of critical, hitherto unknown, issues in the application of this monitoring technique; these encompass three broad dimensions: (1) a need for standardised protocols; (2) unresolved causal links between observed patterns and putative pressures; and (3) uncertainties of how organisms responds specifically to both natural and human changes of environmental conditions on sandy shores.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of seasonal variations on energy metabolism in different tissues of the freshwater crayfish Parastacus brasiliensis (von Martens, 1869). Crayfish were collected monthly from January 2001 to January 2003 in São Francisco de Paula, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a stream and in a culture tank. Haemolymph samples were collected from each crayfish in the field with a syringe, by puncturing the membrane at the base of the chelipeds. Hepatopancreas, gills, and abdominal muscle were removed for determination of free glucose, glycogen, total lipids, and triglycerides. The haemolymph samples were used for determination of glucose, total proteins, total lipids, and triglycerides. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in biochemical composition in crayfish collected in the stream compared to the experimental tank during the year, principally in glucose and triglycerides in haemolymph, glycogen and total lipids in all tissues study, and triglycerides only in abdominal muscle. The regular food intake partially modified these seasonal variations of the metabolic pattern. Environmental conditions (e.g., food availability and water temperature) and reproductive period appeared to be the main factors influencing the seasonal patterns of variation in energy metabolism.

Abstract
The crayfish Parastacus defossus occurs in Uruguay and the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. It lives in swamps and lakes, where it digs sloped subterranean tunnels that are used as burrows. Because there is little information about the biology, physiology and ecology of this species, the aim of this study was to identify the seasonal variations of its carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Crayfish were collected monthly (from November 2002 to February 2004) in the Lami region, Porto Alegre municipality (30 degrees 11'41''S-51 degrees 06'00''W). Haemolymph samples, used for determination of glucose, total proteins, triglycerides, total cholesterol and total lipids, were collected in the field using potassium oxalate as an anti-clotting agent. The animals and haemolymph samples were immediately frozen in the field. In the laboratory, the hepatopancreas, gills and abdominal muscles were removed for determination of glycogen, triglycerides, total cholesterol and total lipids. The findings suggest that in P. defossus, lipids are an important reserve of energy used during reproduction in both males and females; whereas glycogen may be used during periods of intense activity or environmental stress.

Abstract
Aquatic organisms exist in a constantly fluctuating habitat, with changes in photoperiod, temperature, pH, dissolved organic content, dissolved oxygen and food supply. Organisms must alter past of their physiological and biochemical processes to cope with these changes. We compared the effect of seasonal variations in factors related to energy metabolism of two species of sympatric amphipods, Hyalella pleoacuta and Hyalella castroi. The animals were collected monthly from April 2004 through March 2006. Contents of glycogen, proteins, lipids, triglycerides and the levels of lipoperoxidation were determined in males and females throughout the year by using spectrophotometric methods. Observations revealed significant seasonal differences in biochemical composition, as well as differences among sexes and species. Environmental conditions (e.g., trophic conditions) and reproduction are supposed to be the main processes influencing the seasonal patterns of variation in biochemical composition. Both species of Hyalella show ecological and behavioral differences, especially by resources such as food, space and seasonal variations of energy metabolism, which might facilitate their coexistence in the same habitat.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the seasonal variations in the metabolism of Parastacus varicosus and examine the possible relationships to its reproduction. Animals were sampled (9 h to 10 h) in each month in the Gravataí River, RS, Brazil. Haemolymph samples were collected from each crayfish in the field for determination of glucose, total proteins, total lipids, and total cholesterol. Hepatopancreas, abdominal muscle, and gonads were removed for determination of glycogen, total proteins, total lipids, and total cholesterol. ANOVA revealed significant seasonal differences in the biochemical composition of all tissues studied; when the sexes were compared these parameters did not show any significant difference in the hepatopancreas and muscle. However, in haemolymph we observed significant variation only in cholesterol and lipid levels. The results suggest that the metabolic variability is related to the stage of maturation of the gonads, in females, where the hepatopancreas and other tissue studies can store and transfer reserves to support maturation to complement the food intake. Variations in the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices suggest that reproduction occurs principally in summer. As in other decapods, abiotic factors such as water temperature, oxygen content, etc. influence the intermediate metabolism.

Abstract
Latin American researchers in science and engineering (S&E), including those in biology and biomedical sciences, are frequently exposed to unstable conditions of financial support, material and human resources, and a limited number of positions at public and private institutions. Such uncertainties impose continuous challenges for the scientific community which, in the best of cases, responds with careful planning and creativity, and in the worst scenario endures the migration of scientists to the USA or Europe. Still, the number of scientific publications from Latin American institutions in the last decade increased at a much faster rate than publications from the USA and Canada. A brief analysis per country of the gross domestic product (GDP) spent in research and development (R&D) and the S&E production reported by the Pascal bibliographic database suggests that the number and quality of S&E publications is directly proportional to the financial support for R&D. However, the investment in R&D in Latin America did not increase at the same rate (from 0.49 to 0.55% of GDP, from 1990 to 2003) at which S&E publications did in the same period (2.9-fold increase, from 1988 to 2001). In Latin America, the traditional financial support for scientific research continues to be from federal and state government funds, associated in some cases with institutional funds that are mostly directed towards administrative costs and infrastructure maintenance. The aim of this introduction is to briefly discuss the production cost of articles published in refereed S&E journals, including the cost of the scientific research behind them, and, at the same time, to increase the awareness of the high quality of scientific research in Latin American institutions despite the many challenges, especially financial constraints, faced by their scientists. The second issue of Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology dedicated to Latin America ("The Face of Latin American Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology") celebrates, by means of 26 manuscripts from five countries, the diversity and quality of biological science in the continent.
