Abstract
Nutritional programming is a promising concept for promoting metabolic adaptation of fish to challenging conditions, such as the increase in water temperature. The present work evaluates in ovo arginine or glutamine supplementation as enhancers of zebrafish metabolic or absorptive capacity, respectively, at optimum (28 ºC) and challenging temperatures (32 ºC) in the long-term. Growth performance, free amino acids profile, methylation index and the activity levels of digestive and intermediary metabolism enzymes were analysed to assess the metabolic plasticity induced by an early nutritional intervention. Temperature affected fish larvae growth performance. At the end of the experimental period 28 ºC-fish showed higher dry weight than 32 ºC-fish. The effects of the early supplementation were reflected in the larval free amino acids profile at the end of the experiment. Higher methylation potential was observed in the ARG-fish. In ovo amino acid supplementation modulated the metabolic response in zebrafish larvae, however, the magnitude of this effect differed according to the amino acid and the temperature. Overall, arginine supplementation enhanced carbohydrates metabolism at 32 ºC. In conclusion, the present work suggests that in ovo arginine supplementation may promote a better adaptive response to higher temperatures.

Abstract
The ubiquitous presence of plastic particles in water bodies poses a potential threat to aquatic species. Although numerous adverse effects of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have been documented, their effects on fish feeding, one of the most important behaviors of animals, are far from being fully understood. In this study, the effects of MPs and NPs (at environmentally realistic levels) on fish food consumption and feeding behavior were assessed using goldfish (Carassius auratus) and polystyrene (PS) particles as representatives. In addition, to reveal the potential mechanisms, the effects of MPs and NPs on peripheral and central regulation of appetite were evaluated by examining appetite-regulation related intestinal, serous, and hypothalamic parameters. The results obtained indicated that the 28-day MP- and NP-exposure significantly impaired goldfish feeding by disrupting peripheral and central appetite regulation. Based on differences observed in their effects on the abovementioned behavioral, histological, and physiological parameters, MPs and NPs may interfere with appetite regulation in a size-dependent manner. Blocking the gastrointestinal tract and causing histopathological and functional damage to inner organs may be the main routes through which MPs and NPs disrupt appetite regulation. Our findings suggested that plastic particles exposure may have far-reaching effects on fish species through impaired feeding, which warrants further attention.

Abstract
The present experiment evaluated whether dietary protein (P) or lipid (L) is preferred as an energy source by genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) reared at high temperatures. A 60-day feeding trial was conducted at 28.3 °C and 33.3 °C, testing five diets with varying protein (34,36,38 %) and lipid (8,10,12 %) levels, viz., P38L8, P36L8, P34L8, P34L10, P34L12. Parameters assessed included growth, body composition, serum lipids, enzyme activities, fatty acid profiles, and PPAR-α mRNA expression. Results indicated that the fish fed optimum protein and highest lipid level (P34L12) showed significantly higher (P < 0.05) weight gain percent and thermal growth coefficient. Increasing dietary lipid content reduced whole-body lipid deposition and mobilised serum triglycerides and cholesterol at higher temperatures (HT). Hepatic malic enzyme activity decreased with rising temperature and lipid content, while lipoprotein lipase activity in muscle increased. The fatty acid composition altered substantially with the changes in rearing temperature and diets. Unsaturated fats were preferred as direct fuels for β-oxidation, wherein the P34L12 groups preserved body (area %) EPA, DHA, and linolenic acid, especially at HT. The expression of PPAR-α, a lipolytic marker, was upregulated with increasing temperature and high dietary lipid content, peaking in P34L12 groups. The study concludes that high-lipid diets (12 %) are metabolically superior to high-protein diets for GIFT tilapia at elevated temperatures, optimising growth, enhancing metabolic efficiency, and maintaining essential fatty acid profiles under hyperthermal stress.

Abstract
The growth, development, and survival of fish, especially in the early stages of development, is influenced by a complex of environmental factors, among which temperature is one of the most important. Although the physiological effects of environmental stress in fish have been extensively studied, the molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. However, recent advances in transcriptomic techniques have facilitated the study of the molecular mechanisms of environmental stress responses in aquatic species. Here, we aimed to elucidate the effects of breeding temperatures (21, 24, 27, and 30 °C) on the growth and nutrient metabolism in the early developmental stage of Platax teira, using transcriptomic techniques. Transcriptomic analysis identified 5492, 6937, and 4246 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the 21 vs. 24 °C, 27 vs. 24 °C, and 30 vs. 24 °C comparisons, respectively, most of which were involved in cell processes, single organism, metabolism, catalytic activity, and cell part, based on gene ontology (GO) functional annotations. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that the DEGs were mainly enriched in pathways related to metabolism of matter and energy, protein digestion and absorption, and glucose and lipid metabolism. Additionally, the expression of genes related to energy, lipid, and glucose metabolism in the fish liver was upregulated under a low-temperature condition (21 °C), although increasing the temperature within the acceptable threshold improved nutrient metabolism and growth in the fish. Meanwhile, nutrient metabolism and growth were suppressed by an extremely high temperature (30 °C) owing to oxidative stress. Overall, it was shown that nutrient metabolism pathways were involved in thermal stress responses in P. teira, and the optimal breeding temperature range was 24-27 °C. Through transcriptomics, the regulatory mechanism of larval development in P. teira under different growth temperatures was elucidated, with the goal of establishing a theoretical basis for industrial breeding.

Abstract
Episodes of elevated temperature, combined with lower feed availability, are among the predicted scenarios of climate change representing a challenge for coral reef fish. We investigated the response of clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) to a scenario in which it received a single meal to satiety after 48 h fasting at 32 °C (climate change scenario) and 28 °C (control). We analysed the metabolic rate (MR), feed intake, gut transit, and expression of selected brain neuropeptides and one receptor believed to be involved in appetite control. Fish at 32 °C ingested 17.9% less feed and had a faster gut transit than did fish at 28 °C. MR in the unfed fish was 31% higher at 32 °C compared to 28 °C. In the fed fish, postprandial MR at 28 °C was 30% higher compared to that of unfed fish, while at 32 °C it was only 15% higher. The expression of agrp1 did not differ between unfed and refed fish. The levels of both pomca and mc4r increased immediately after the meal and subsequently declined, suggesting a possible anorexic role for these genes. Notably, this pattern was accelerated in fish kept at 32 °C compared with that in fish kept at 28 °C. The dynamics of these changes in expression correspond to a faster gut transition of ingested feed at elevated temperatures. For both agrp2 and pomcb there was an increase in expression following feeding in fish maintained at 32 °C, which was not observed in fish kept at 28 °C. These results suggest that low feed availability and elevated temperature stimulate anorexigenic pathways in clownfish, resulting in significantly lower feed intake despite the temperature-induced increase in metabolic rate. This may be a mechanism to ameliorate the decrease in aerobic scope that results from higher temperatures.

Abstract
The lack of detailed information on nutritional requirement results in limited feeding in Siberian sturgeon. In this study, resveratrol, a versatile natural extract, was supplemented in the daily diet, and the digestive ability and microbiome were evaluated in the duodena and valvular intestines of Siberian sturgeon. The results showed that resveratrol increased the activity of pepsin, α-amylase, and lipase, which was positively associated with an increase in the digestive ability, but it did not influence the final body weight. Resveratrol improved the digestive ability probably by distinctly enhancing intestinal villus height. Microbiome analysis revealed that resveratrol changed the abundance and composition of the microbial community in the intestine, principally in the duodenum. Random forests analysis found that resveratrol significantly downregulated the abundance of potential pathogens (Citrobacter freundii, Vibrio rumoiensis, and Brucella melitensis), suggesting that resveratrol may also improve intestinal health. In summary, our study revealed that resveratrol improved digestive ability and intestinal health, which can contribute to the development of functional feed in Siberian sturgeon.

Abstract
Simple Summary Meagre is a target species to diversify marine aquaculture in Europe due to its high growth rates and an excellent nutritional profile. Nevertheless, this species is highly sensitive to low temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary phospholipid (PL) levels on growth and cold tolerance. Animals fed with a PL-enriched diet grew faster and significantly reduced the risk of death and increased the lethal doses 50 and 90 without modifying the average temperature at death. Regarding lipid profiles, the cold challenge promoted a general fatty acid accumulation in the liver that was attenuated in fish fed with the PL-enriched diet preventing the negative effect of a fatty liver. Abstract Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is a fast-growing species currently produced in aquaculture. This species is highly sensitive to low environmental temperatures which results in high mortality events during production cycles. In this study, the effects of dietary phospholipids (PLs) on growth and cold tolerance were evaluated. For this purpose, control (CTRL) and PL-enriched diets (three-fold higher levels than CTRL) were supplied to meagre juveniles (12.9 ± 2.5 g) for 60 days, and growth was determined using a longitudinal approach. Weight gaining and SGR reduction were significantly different between dietary treatments. Animals fed with the PL-enriched diet were 4.1% heavier and grew 3.2% faster than those fed with the CTRL diet. Survival was higher than 98% in both groups. After finishing the growth trial, animals were submitted to two cold challenges and cold tolerance was evaluated as temperature at death (Tdeath), risk to death and lethal doses (LD) 50 and 90 using the cumulative degree cooling hours 6 h (CD6H). Tdeath ranged between 7.54 and 7.91 °C without statistical differences between dietary treatments. However, risk to death was significantly smaller (0.91-fold lower) and LD50 and LD90 were higher in animals fed with the PL-enriched than those supplied the CTRL diet. To assess the fatty acid (FA) composition of liver and brain in animals fed both diets after a cold challenge, FA profiles were determined in juveniles maintained at 14 °C and challenged at 7 °C. FA amounts increased in the liver of animals challenged at 7 °C. In contrast, several FAs reduced their levels in the PL-enriched diet with respect to CTRL indicating that these animals were able to mobilize efficiently lipids from this organ mitigating the negative effects of lipid accumulation during the cold challenge. In brain, the PL-enriched diet increased DHA level during the cold shock indicating a role in maintaining of brain functions. These results open a new research line that could improve the cold tolerance of meagre through dietary supplementation before winter.

Abstract
Fish and other marine animals have a unique and intimate interaction with their surrounding environment. Diet type or trophic level play significant roles in modulating species digestive physiology. However, little is known about how the trophic niche influences digestive activity and gut microbiota in scombrids species. The aim of the present study was to analyse and describe the digestive physiology of the skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and the Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) as bioindicator of the feeding ecology and trophic niche for both species in the Gulf of Cádiz (Spain). For that, fish proximate composition, pH of digestive organs and digestive enzymes activity levels were analysed in 10 individuals of each species to gain insight into the digestive physiological adaptations of the two species of scombrids. In addition, intestinal microbiota composition was determined for the skipjack tuna. The integration of the results suggested a clear trophic niche segregation between both species. Stomach pH was associated in both species with infrequent feeding events. Body proximate composition and digestive lipases activity patterns pointed to a high predominance of lipids in the Atlantic bonito diet, suggesting oily fish as main prey. On the other hand, results supported the skipjack tuna as a highly opportunistic feeder with a more varied diet, including fish but also crustaceans as preys. The gut microbial community in the latter species is dominated by Firmicutes and Tenericutes at phylum level, and by Mycoplasma, Blautia and Dorea at genus level. The present study contributes to advance the knowledge on the feeding behaviour and physiology diversity in fish species as a result of adaptation to a particular habitat.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to assess if trypsin, a key enzyme involved in protein digestion, presents some kind of functional adaptations to seasonal changes in water temperature in freshwater fish. In order to test this hypothesis, individuals of two fish species Carassius gibelio (agastric) and Perca fluviatilis (gastric) were sampled in the basin of Chany Lake (Siberia, Russia) at two different seasons (spring and summer). Apparent kinetic parameters (Km and Vmax) were determined for both species and seasons at the actual pH values in fish guts, and at actual temperatures. Results showed a significant effect of both the species and sampling season on the apparent kinetic parameters of trypsin. In the case of Prussian carp, Km and Vmax were lower for each assayed temperature (for 5 and 15 °C the differences were significant) for fish sampled in summer when compared to those sampled in spring. In contrast, values of Km in perch tended to be lower in spring at 5 and 25 °C but these differences were not significant, while Vmax showed a significant decrease in summer samples. This suggests a sort of functional adaptation of the same trypsin enzymes to seasonal changes, oriented to maximize protein digestion under variable conditions.

Abstract
The clown anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is a common model species in studies assessing the impact of climate changes on tropical coral fish physiology, metabolism, growth, and stress. However, the basic endocrine principles for the control of food intake and energy homeostasis, under normal and elevated sea temperatures, in this species remain unknown. In this work, we studied food intake and growth in clown anemonefish reared at different temperatures and with different food availability. We also analyzed expression of genes in the melanocortin system, which is believed to be involved in the control of appetite and feeding behavior. These were two paralogues of pomc: pomca and pomcb; two paralogs of agrp: agrp1 and agrp2; and one mc4r-like. Groups of juvenile clown anemonefish were exposed to four experimental treatments combining (orthogonal design) two rearing temperatures: 28 °C (T28; normal) and 32 °C (T32; high) and two feeding regimes: one (1 M; 08:00) or three (3 M; 08:00, 12:00, 15:00) meals per day, fed to satiety by hand. The results showed that high temperature (T32) did not affect the average growth rate but induced a stronger asymmetrical individual body weight of the fish within the population (tank). Lower feeding frequency (1 M) resulted in lower growth rates at both rearing temperatures. Fish reared at high temperature had higher total daily food intake, which correlated with a lower expression of pomca, supporting an anorexigenic role of this gene. High temperature combined with restricted feeding induced higher agrp1 levels and resulted in a higher food intake in the morning meal compared to the control. This supports an orexigenic role for agrp1. mRNA levels of agrp2 responded differently from agrp1, supporting different roles for the paralogues. Levels of mc4r-like inversely correlated with fish body weight, indicating a possible size/stage dependence of gene expression. In conclusion, our results indicate that the melanocortin system is involved in adjusting appetite and food intake of clown anemonefish in response to elevated temperature and low food availability.

Abstract
Rising of temperature in conjunction with acidification due to the anthropogenic climates has tremendously affected all aquatic life. Small changes in the surrounding environment could lead to physiological constraint in the individual. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of warm water temperature (32 °C) and low pH (pH 6) on physiological responses and growth of hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀ × Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂) juveniles for 25 days. Growth performance was significantly affected under warm water temperature and low-pH conditions. Surprisingly, the positive effect on growth was observed under the interactive effects of warm water and low pH exposure. Hybrid grouper exposed to the interactive stressor of warm temperature and low pH exhibited higher living cost, where HSI content was greatly depleted to about 2.3-folds than in normal circumstances. Overall, challenge to warm temperature and low pH induced protein mobilization as an energy source followed by glycogen and lipid to support basal metabolic needs.

Abstract
The influence of diurnal and nocturnal feeding on daily rhythms of gut levels of cholecystokinin (CCK) and the activity of two key pancreatic proteases, trypsin and chymotrypsin, were examined in juveniles of Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis), a species with nocturnal habits. Four feeding protocols were performed: P1) One morning meal; P2) Six meals during the light period; P3) Six meals during the dark period; and P4) 12 meals during 24 h. Daily activity patterns of both proteases were remarkably similar and showed a high correlation in all the experimental protocols. In P1, daily patterns of CCK and digestive enzymes showed a single maximum. In P2, CCK levels exhibited two peaks. Digestive enzymes activities showed slightly delayed peaks compared to CCK, although their daily fluctuations were not significant. In P3, intestinal CCK concentration exhibited two peaks at the end of light and dark periods, but only the second one was significant. The first maximum level of chymotrypsin activity occurred 4 h after the first CCK peak, while the second one coincided with the second CCK peak. Fluctuations of trypsin activity were not significant. In P4, CCK concentration showed three small peaks. Digestive enzymes daily fluctuations were not significant, although they showed an inverted trend with respect to CCK. The daily pattern of the gut CCK content in our study is in agreement with the anorexigenic function of this hormone. Our results support the existence of a negative feedback regulatory loop between CCK and pancreatic proteolytic enzymes in Senegalese sole juveniles.

Abstract
As most fish are ectotherms, their physiology is strongly affected by temperature. Temperature affects their metabolic rate and thus their energy balance and behavior, including locomotor and feeding behavior. Temperature influences the ability/desire of the fish to obtain food, and how they process food through digestion, absorb nutrients within the gastrointestinal tract, and store excess energy. As fish display a large variability in habitats, feeding habits, and anatomical and physiological features, the effects of temperature are complex and species-specific. The effects of temperature depend on the timing, intensity, and duration of exposure as well as the speed at which temperature changes occur. Whereas acute short-term variations of temperature might have drastic, often detrimental, effects on fish physiology, long-term gradual variations might lead to acclimation, e.g. variations in metabolic and digestive enzyme profiles. The goal of this review is to summarize our current knowledge on the effects of temperature on energy homeostasis, with specific focus on metabolism, feeding, digestion, and how fish are often able to "adapt" to changing environments through phenotypic and physiological changes.
