Abstract
The variations of haematological parameters hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, leukocyte and erythrocyte count have been used as pollution and physiological indicators of organic dysfunction in both environmental and aquaculture studies. These parameters are commonly applied as prognostic and diagnostic tools in fish health status. However, there are both extrinsic and intrinsic factors to consider when performing a blood test, because a major limitation for field researchers is that the "rules" for animal or human haematology do not always apply to wildlife. The main objective of this review is to show how some environmental and xenobiotic factors are capable to modulating the haematic cells. Visualizing the strengths and limitations of a haematological analysis in the health assessment of wild and culture fish. Finally, we point out the importance of the use of mitochondrial activities as part of haematological evaluations associated to environment or aquaculture stress.

Abstract
Based on the formation of an autotetraploid fish line (4nAUT, 4n = 200; F2-F11) derived from the distant hybridization of female Carassius auratus red var. (RCC, 2n = 100) × male Megalobrama amblycephala (BSB, 2n = 48), we produced autotriploid hybrids (3nAUT) by crossing females of RCC with males of 4nAUT and allotriploid hybrids (3nALT) by crossing females of Cyprinus carpio (CC, 2n = 100) with males of 4nAUT. The aim of this study was to comparatively investigate the reproductive characteristics of 3nALT and 3nAUT. We investigated morphological traits, chromosomal numbers, DNA content and gonadal development in 3nAUT and 3nALT. The results indicated both 3nAUT and 3nALT possessed 150 chromosomes and were triploid hybrids. The females and males of 3nALT and males of 3nAUT had abnormal gonadal development and could not generate mature eggs or sperm, but the females of 3nAUT had normal gonadal development and generated mature eggs at 2 years old. The females of 3nAUT generated different sizes of eggs, which fertilized with haploid sperm from RCC and formed viable diploid, triploid, and tetraploid offspring. The formation of these two kinds of triploid hybrids provides an ideal model for studying the reproductive traits of triploid hybrids, which is of great value in animal genetics and reproductive biology.

Abstract
The purpose of this research work is to present data that show the seasonal changes (spring-summer-autumn) of basic erythrocyte-metric parameters (ЕL: Erythrocyte length, ЕW: Erythrocyte width, ЕL/ЕW, ES: Erythrocyte size; NL: Nucleus length, NW: Nucleus width, NL/NW; NS: Nucleus size, NS/ES: Nucleus-cytoplasmic ratio) in Pelophylax ridibundus populations from three biotopes located on two rivers in Southern Bulgaria (less disrupted biotope, with domestic sewage pollution and heavy metal pollution). Differences of high statistical significance were found among the different populations. Within the population living in conditions of domestic sewage pollution, for the entire period of the investigation the erythrocytes and their nuclei had an elliptical shape (a slight elongation of ellipses in autumn) and the biggest sizes (EL, EW, ES, NL and NS were constantly higher than the less disrupted biotope), NS/ES, became significantly smaller in autumn. Throughout the period of investigation, the values of all nine cellular and nuclear parameters were statistically-significantly the lowest in the population from the biotope with heavy metal pollution. The parameters: EL, ЕW, NL, NW and ES became significantly lower, progressively and statistically, during seasonal transitions. Cells and nuclei grew ovular in shape in comparison to the populations from the other two biotopes (this process was most pronounced in autumn) and NS/ES numbers were significantly decreased in summer and autumn.

Abstract
This study compared the hematological characteristics of diploid and triploid of jundia, Rhamdia quelen juveniles, an important freshwater fish cultured in south Brazil. Hematological morphometry of erythrocytes were determined in blood smears under a light microscope. The blood was used to measure the number of red blood cells (RBC) with a hemocytometer Neubauer chamber, and the numbers of white blood cells (WBC) and thrombocytes that were obtained using an indirect method. The results showed that triploidy increased (p < 0.01) the size and volume of the erythrocytes. Nevertheless, as expected, triploidy decreased (p < 0.01) the number of circulating erythrocytes, leucocytes and trombocytes in the blood of jundia. Moreover differential cell counts were different in diploids and triploids, suggesting that triploidy affects the number of cells and their proportion in blood. Lymphocytes were the most predominant cells in the differential counting of diploid fish (62.5%) while monocytes were predominant in triploid fish (49.6%). These results suggest performance differences between ploidies of jundia, and require future studies to evaluate the potential of triploid jundia in the culture conditions and resistance to infection.

Abstract
Puberty comprises the transition from an immature juvenile to a mature adult state of the reproductive system, i.e. the individual becomes capable of reproducing sexually for the first time, which implies functional competence of the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis. Early puberty is a major problem in many farmed fish species due to negative effects on growth performance, flesh composition, external appearance, behaviour, health, welfare and survival, as well as possible genetic impact on wild populations. Late puberty can also be a problem for broodstock management in some species, while some species completely fail to enter puberty under farming conditions. Age and size at puberty varies between and within species and strains, and are modulated by genetic and environmental factors. Puberty onset is controlled by activation of the BPG axis, and a range of internal and external factors are hypothesised to stimulate and/or modulate this activation such as growth, adiposity, feed intake, photoperiod, temperature and social factors. For example, there is a positive correlation between rapid growth and early puberty in fish. Age at puberty can be controlled by selective breeding or control of photoperiod, feeding or temperature. Monosex stocks can exploit sex dimorphic growth patterns and sterility can be achieved by triploidisation. However, all these techniques have limitations under commercial farming conditions. Further knowledge is needed on both basic and applied aspects of puberty control to refine existing methods and to develop new methods that are efficient in terms of production and acceptable in terms of fish welfare and sustainability.

Abstract
The aim of this study was a comparison of key haematological features of diploid (2n) and triploid (3n) Caspian salmon (Salmo trutta caspius). Morphometric indices of erythrocytes were determined on blood smears by light microscopy. Triploidy significantly (P < 0.001) increased all morphometric indices measured in the erythrocytes including cell size, cell surface area, and cell volume. The increase in cell size was larger for the major (27%) axis than for the minor (22%) axis, thus making erythrocytes of 3n Caspian salmon more ellipsoidal. The estimated increase in erythrocyte nuclear volume (87%) was bigger than the theoretical expected 50% increase. Haematological indices were measured manually by hemocytometry. Triploids had lower numbers of red blood cells (RBC: 1,120,000 cells/mL in 2n vs. 700,000 cells/mL in 3n; P < 0.001) but they were larger in size (mean erythrocytic volume [MEV]: 363.1 nm3 in 2n vs. 483.3 nm3 in 3n; P < 0.001). The decrease in RBC number was not compensated by the increase in MEV and, thus, triploidy affected the haematocrit (Hct: 38.8% in 2n vs. 33.06% in 3n; P < 0.05). Total blood hemoglobin concentration was lower in triploid fish (Hb: 9.9 g/dL in 2n vs. 8.9 g/dL in 3n; P < 0.05). In contrast, mean erythrocytic hemoglobin (MEH: 95 mug in 2n vs. 133.2 mug in 3n; P < 0.001) was higher for 3n Caspian salmon as a result of their larger erythrocytes, although MEH concentration (MEHC: 0.26 g/dL in 2n vs. 0.27 g/dL in 3n) did not significantly differ (P > 0.05). White blood cell (WBC) counts (lymphocytes and neutrophiles) were measured and WBC/RBC ratios were calculated. There were no significant differences in WBC (15,710 cells/mL in 2n vs. 12,683 cells/mL in 3n; P > 0.05), lymphocytes, and neutrophils as %WBC as well as WBC/RBC ratios between two ploidy levels (P > 0.05). Triploid Caspian salmon showed higher erythrocyte abnormalities such as 'twisted', 'tailed', and 'anucleated' cells as well as high portions of immature RBC in blood smears in comparison with diploids (P < 0.001).

Abstract
The use of triploid fish may be of interest in research, e.g. study of how this condition affects the size and activity of cells. In addition, triploid fish are sterile and production of triploids in fish species that are marketed after reaching sexual maturity may be of economic interest. In the present study, the effects of triploidy on the activity of several components of the innate immune system of turbot (Psetta maxima L) were determined. Triploid turbot had bigger cells (erythrocytes and neutrophils) but the number of blood erythrocytes, leucocytes and thrombocytes was lower than in diploid fish. The differential cell count was similar in both types of fish. The respiratory burst and the phagocytic activities were higher in neutrophils of triploid turbot. However, because the number of neutrophils was higher in diploids, the total respiratory burst activity and the phagocytosis per microliter of blood was similar in both types of fish. No differences were found in serum complement, lysozyme or bactericidal activities. The results indicate that the activities of the humoral components of the innate immune system tested are similar in diploid and triploid fish and that the lower leucocyte number found in triploids is compensated for by higher cell activity.
