Recent progress in functionalized electrophosphorescent iridium(III) complexes

Ambipolar Self-Host Functionalization Accelerates Blue Multi-Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence with Internal Quantum Efficiency of 100

Emerging multi-resonance (MR) thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters can combine 100% exciton harvesting and high color purity for their organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). However, the highly planar configurations of MR molecules lead to intermolecular-interaction-induced quenching. A feasible way is integrating host segments into MR molecules, namely a "self-host" strategy, but without involving additional charge transfer and/or vibrational components to excited states. Herein, an ambipolar self-host featured MR emitter, tCBNDADPO, is demonstrated, whose ambipolar host segment (DADPO) significantly and comprehensively improves the TADF properties, especially greatly accelerated singlet radiative rate constant of 2.11 × 10⁸ s^-1 and exponentially reduced nonradiative rate constants. Consequently, at the same time as preserving narrowband blue emission with an FWHM of ≈28 nm at a high doping concentration of 30%, tCBNDADPO reveals state-of-the-art photoluminescence and electroluminescence quantum efficiencies of 99% and 30%, respectively. The corresponding 100% internal quantum efficiency of tCBNDADPO supported by an ultrasimple trilayer and heavily doped device demonstrates the feasibility of the ambipolar self-host strategy for constructing practically applicable MR materials.

Synthesis, Spectroscopy and Electrochemistry in Relation to DFT Computed Energies of Ferrocene- and Ruthenocene-Containing -Diketonato Iridium(III) Heteroleptic Complexes. Structure of [(2-Pyridylphenyl)2Ir(RcCOCHCOCH3]

A series of new ferrocene- and ruthenocene-containing iridium(III) heteroleptic complexes of the type [(ppy)2Ir(RCOCHCOR')], with ppy = 2-pyridylphenyl, R = Fc = FeII(η5-C5H4)(η5-C5H5) and R' = CH3 (1) or Fc (2), as well as R = Rc = RuII(η5-C5H4)(η5-C5H5) and R' = CH3 (3), Rc (4) or Fc (5) was synthesized via the reaction of appropriate metallocene-containing β-diketonato ligands with [(ppy)2(-Cl)Ir]2. The single crystal structure of 3 (monoclinic, P21/n, Z = 4) is described. Complexes 1-5 absorb light strongly in the region 280-480 nm the metallocenyl -diketonato substituents quench phosphorescence in 1-5. Cyclic and square wave voltammetric studies in CH2Cl2/[N(nBu)4][B(C6F5)4] allowed observation of a reversible IrIII/IV redox couple as well as well-resolved ferrocenyl (Fc) and ruthenocenyl (Rc) one-electron transfer steps in 1-5. The sequence of redox events is in the order Fc oxidation, then IrIII oxidation and finally ruthenocene oxidation, all in one-electron transfer steps. Generation of IrIV quenched phosphorescence in 6, [(ppy)2Ir(H3CCOCHCOCH3)]. This study made it possible to predict the IrIII/IV formal reduction potential from Gordy scale group electronegativities, χR and/or ΣχR' of -diketonato pendent side groups as well as from DFT-calculated energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital of the species involved in the IrIII/IV oxidation at a 98 % accuracy level.

Highly efficient room-temperature phosphorescence and afterglow luminescence from common organic fluorophores in 2D hybrid perovskites

Regardless of rapid development of organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) originating from phosphors in crystals, highly efficient and persistent RTP from common fluorophores is very rare. Herein, 1,8-naphthalimide (NI), a common organic fluorophore, is doped into organic cations of 2D layered organic/inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) to yield thin films and powders with yellow RTP of NI in air. The triplet excitons of NI are mainly derived from Wannier excitons of inorganic perovskite through energy transfer (ET) for films, and from singlet excitons of NI through intersystem crossing (ISC) for powder. Consequently, the quantum yield (Φ P), lifetime (τ) and color of RTP can be tuned by changing the fluorophore and halide in the perovskites, as well as their solid morphology. A white emission, comprising the blue one from the perovskite and yellow RTP (Φ P = 25.6%, τ = 6.3 ms) from NI, is obtained in Br-based OIHPs in powder. Cl-based OIHPs exhibit fluorescence/phosphorescence dual emission in thin films, and yellow afterglow phosphorescence in powders (Φ P = 56.1%, τ = 35 ms). The unique performance of the OIHPs with RTP can make them widely applicable in the field of information technology as security ink, and white and afterglow LEDs as single luminescent materials.

Efficient green electroluminescence based on an iridium(iii) complex with different device structures

Organic light-emitting diodes based on an iridium complex using different device structure show high performances with a maximum current efficiency of 86.5 cd A⁻¹and a maximum power efficiency of 52.2 lm W⁻¹, respectively.
