Unveiling the fate of metal leaching in bimetal-catalyzed Fenton-like systems: pivotal role of aqueous matrices and machine learning prediction

Metal-based catalytic materials exhibit exceptional properties in degrading emerging pollutants within Fenton-like systems. However, the potential risk of metal leaching has become pressing environmental concern. This study addressed scientific issues pertaining to the leaching behavior and control strategies for metal-based catalytic materials. Innovative cobalt-aluminum hydrotalcite (CoAl-LDH) triggered peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system was constructed and achieved near-complete removal of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) across diverse water quality environments. Notably, it was found that the tunable ion exchange and Al3+ stabilization of CoAl-LDH occurred due to the particularity of neutral water quality, resulting in significantly lower Co2+ leaching levels (0.321 mg/L) compared to acidic conditions (5.103 mg/L). In light of this, machine learning technology was then employed for the first time to simulate the dynamic trend of Co2+ leaching and elucidated the critical regulatory roles and mechanisms of Al3+, aqueous matrix, and reaction rate. Furthermore, degradation systems based on different water quality and metal leaching levels regulated the generation levels of SO4.- and O2∙-, and the unique advantages of free radical attack paths were clarified through CIP degradation products and ecotoxicity analysis. These findings introduced novel insights and approaches for engineering application and pollution control in metal-based Fenton-like water treatment.

How can heteroatoms boost the performance of photoactive nanomaterials for wastewater purification?

Photocatalysis, as an alternative for treating persistent water pollutants, holds immense promise. However, limitations hinder sustained treatment and recycling under varying light conditions. This comprehensive review delves into the novel paradigm of metal and non-metal doping to overcome these challenges. It begins by discussing the fundamental principles of photocatalysis and its inherent limitations. Understanding these constraints is crucial for developing effective strategies. Band gap narrowing by metal and non-metal doping modifies the band gap, enabling visible-light absorption. Impurity energy levels and oxygen vacancies influenced the doping energy levels and surface defects. Interfacial electron transfer and charge carrier recombination are the most important factors that impact overall efficiency. The comparative analysis of nanomaterials are reviewed on various, including nanometal oxides, nanocarbon materials, and advanced two-dimensional structures. The synthesis process are narratively presented, emphasizing production yields, selectivity, and efficiency. The review has potential applications in the environment for efficient pollutant removal and water purification, economic cost-effective and scalable production and technological advancement catalyst design, in spite of its challenges in material stability, synthesis methods and optimizing band gaps. The novelty of the review paper is on the proposal of a new paradigm of heterojunctions of doped metal and non-metal photocatalysts to promise highly efficient water treatment. This review bridges the gap between fundamental research and practical applications, offering insights into tailored nano photocatalysts.

Progress and obstacles in employing carbon quantum dots for sustainable wastewater treatment

We explored the potential of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as novel materials for wastewater treatment and their role towards environmental sustainability. The advantages of CQDs over other carbon-based materials, when synthesized using the same precursor material and for the same contaminant are discussed, enabling future researchers to choose the appropriate material. CQDs have demonstrated exceptional adaptability in various wastewater treatment, acting as efficient adsorbents for contaminants, exhibiting excellent photocatalytic properties for degradation of organic pollutants, and functioning as highly sensitive sensors for water quality monitoring. We found that bottom-up approach has better control over particle size (resulting CQDs: 1-4 nm), whereas top-down synthesis approach (resulting CQDs: 2-10 nm) have more potential for large scale applications and tunability. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) remains the most expensive characterization technique, which provides the best resolution of the CQD's surface. The study emphasizes on the environmental impact and safety considerations pertaining to CQDs by emphasizing the need for thorough toxicity evaluation, and necessary environmental precautions. The study also identifies the lacunae pertaining to critical challenges in practical implementation of CQDs, such as scalability, competition of co-existing contaminants, and stability. Finally, future research directions are proposed, advocating green synthesis approaches, tailored surface functionalization, and, lowering the overall cost for analysis, synthesis and application of CQDs.

Exploring the potential of eco-friendly carbon dots in monitoring and remediation of environmental pollutants

Photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) have garnered significant interest owing to their distinctive optical and electronic properties. In contrast to semiconductor quantum dots, which incorporated toxic elements in their composition, CDs have emerged as a promising alternative, rendering them suitable for both environmental and biological applications. CDs exhibit astonishing features, including photoluminescence, charge transfer, quantum confinement effect, and biocompatibility. Recently, CDs derived from green sources have drawn a lot of attention due to their strong photostability, reduced toxicity, better biocompatibility, enhanced fluorescence, and simplicity. These attributes have shown great promise in the areas of LED technology, bioimaging, photocatalysis, drug delivery, biosensing, and antibacterial activity. In contrast, this review offers a comprehensive overview of various green sources utilized to produce CDs and methodologies, along with their merits and demerits, with a notable emphasis on physiochemical properties. Additionally, the paper provides insight into the bibliometric analysis and recent advancements of CDs in sensing, photocatalysis, and antibacterial activity. In this field, extensive research is underway, and a total of 7,438 articles have been identified. Among these, 4242 articles are dedicated to sensing applications, while 1518 and 1678 focus on adsorption and degradation. Carbon dots demonstrate exceptional sensing capabilities within the nanomolar range with a selectivity of up to 95% for pollutants. They exhibit excellent degradation efficiency exceeding 90% within 10-130 min and possess an adsorption capacity from 100 to 800 mg/g. These fascinating qualities render them suitable for diverse applications.

Metal-doped carbon dots for biomedical applications: From design to implementation

Carbon dots (CDs), as a new kind of fluorescent nanomaterials, show great potential for application in several fields due to their unique nano-size effect, easy surface functionalization, controllable photoluminescence, and excellent biocompatibility. Conventional preparation methods for CDs typically involve top-down and bottom-up approaches. Doping is a major step forward in CDs design methodology. Chemical doping includes both non-metal and metal doping, in which non-metal doping is an effective strategy for modulating the fluorescence properties of CDs and improving photocatalytic performance in several areas. In recent years, Metal-doped CDs have aroused the interest of academics as a promising nano-doping technique. This approach has led to improvements in the physicochemical and optical properties of CDs by altering their electron density distribution and bandgap capacity. Additionally, the issues of metal toxicity and utilization have been addressed to a large extent. In this review, we categorize metals into two major groups: transition group metals and rare-earth group metals, and an overview of recent advances in biomedical applications of these two categories, respectively. Meanwhile, the prospects and the challenges of metal-doped CDs for biomedical applications are reviewed and concluded. The aim of this paper is to break through the existing deficiencies of metal-doped CDs and fully exploit their potential. I believe that this review will broaden the insight into the synthesis and biomedical applications of metal-doped CDs.

Bioremediation of hazardous heavy metals by marine microorganisms: a recent review

Heavy metals (HMs) like Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, and Hg, among others, play a role in several environmental problems. The marine environment is polluted by several contaminants, such as HMs. A variety of physico-chemical methods usually available for sanitation HMs remediation suffer from either limitation. Bioremediation is a promising way of dealing with HMs pollution. Microbes have the ability with various potencies to resist HMs tension. The current review discusses the main sources and influences of HMs, the role of marine microorganisms in HMs bioremediation, as well as the microbial mechanisms for HMs detoxification and transformation. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the bioremediation technologies that are currently available for the removal of HMs ions from industrial and urban effluent by aquatic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and microalgae, particularly those that are isolated from marine areas. The primary goals are to outline various studies and offer helpful information about the most important aspects of the bioelimination techniques. The biotreatment practices have been primarily divided into three techniques based on this topic. They are biosorption, bioaccumulation, bioleaching, and biotransformation. This article gives the brief view on the research studies about bioremediation of HMs using marine microorganisms. The current review also deals with the critical issues and recent studies based on the HMs biodetoxification using aquatic microorganisms.

Enhanced Oxidation of Organic Compounds by the Ferrihydrite-Ferrate System: The Role of Intramolecular Electron Transfer and Intermediate Iron Species

Previous studies mostly held that the oxidation capacity of ferrate depends on the involvement of intermediate iron species (i.e., FeIV/FeV), however, the potential role of the metastable complex was disregarded in ferrate-based heterogeneous catalytic oxidation processes. Herein, we reported a complexation-mediated electron transfer mechanism in the ferrihydrite-ferrate system toward sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A synergy between intermediate FeIV/FeV oxidation and the intramolecular electron transfer step was proposed. Specifically, the conversion of phenyl methyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2) suggested that FeIV/FeV was involved in the oxidation of SMX. Moreover, based on the in situ Raman test and chronopotentiometry analysis, the formation of the metastable complex of ferrihydrite/ferrate was found, which possesses higher oxidation potential than free ferrate and could achieve the preliminary oxidation of organics via the electron transfer step. In addition, the amino group of SMX could complex with ferrate, and the resulting metastable complex of ferrihydrite/ferrate would combine further with SMX molecules, leading to intramolecular electron transfer and SMX degradation. The ferrate loss experiments suggested that ferrihydrite could accelerate the decomposition of ferrate. Finally, the effects of pH value, anions, humic acid, and actual water on the degradation of SMX by ferrihydrite-ferrate were also revealed. Overall, ferrihydrite demonstrated high catalytic capacity, good reusability, and nontoxic performance for ferrate activation. The ferrihydrite-ferrate process may be a green and promising method for organic removal in wastewater treatment.

Insight into Chinese medicine residue biochar combined with ultrasound for persulfate activation in atrazine degradation: Acanthopanax senticosus precursors, synergistic effects and toxicity assessment

The synergistic activation of persulfate by multiple factors could degrade pollutants more efficiently. However, the co-activation method based on metal ions has the risk of leakage. The non-metallic coupling method could achieve the same efficiency as the metal activation and meanwhile release environmental stress. In this study, the original biochar (BC) was prepared through using Chinese medicinal residue of Acanthopanax senticosus as the precursor. Compared with other biochar, the pore size structure was higher and toxicity risk was lower. The ultrasonic (US)/Acanthopanax senticosus biochar (ASBC)/persulfate oxidation system was established for Atrazine (ATZ). Results showed that 45KHz in middle and low frequency band cooperated with ASBC600 to degrade nearly 70 % of ATZ within 50 min, and US promoted the formation of SO₄^- and OH. Meanwhile, the synergy index of US and ASBC was calculated to be 1.18, which showed positive synergistic effect. Finally, the potential toxicity was examined by using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and luminescent bacteria. This study provides a promising way for the activation of persulfate, which is expected to bring a new idea for the win-win situation of pollutant degradation and solid waste resource utilization.

Deciphering photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by surface-tailored nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots derived from Kraft lignin

Lignin in black liquor can be used to manufacture carbon nanomaterials on a large scale. However, the effect of nitrogen doping on the physicochemical properties and photocatalytic performance of carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) remains to be explored. In this study, NCQDs with different properties were prepared hydrothermally by using kraft lignin as the raw material and EDA as a nitrogen dopant. The amount of EDA added affects the carbonization reaction and surface state of NCQDs. Raman spectroscopy showed that the surface defects increased from 0.74 to 0.84. Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) showed that NCQDs had different intensities of fluorescence emission at 300-420 nm and 600-900 nm. Meanwhile, NCQDs can photo-catalytically degrade 96 % of MB under simulated sunlight irradiation within 300 min. After three months of storage, the fluorescence intensity of NCQDs remained above 94 %, showing remarkable fluorescence stability. After four times of recycling, the photo-degradation rate of NCQDs was maintained above 90 %, confirming its outstanding stability. As a result, a clear understanding of the design of carbon-based photo-catalyst fabricated from the waste of the paper-making industry has been gained.

Light and nitrogen vacancy-intensified nonradical oxidation of organic contaminant with Mn (III) doped carbon nitride in peroxymonosulfate activation

Recently, Mn-based materials have a great potential for selective removal of organic contaminants with the assistance of oxidants (PMS, H₂O₂) and the direct oxidation. However, the rapid oxidation of organic pollutants by Mn-based materials in PMS activation still presents a challenge due to the lower conversion of surface Mn (III)/Mn (IV) and higher reactive energy barrier for reactive intermediates. Here, we constructed Mn (III) and nitrogen vacancies (Nv) modified graphite carbon nitride (MNCN) to break these aforementioned limitations. Through analysis of in-situ spectra and various experiments, a novel mechanism of light-assistance non-radical reaction is clearly elucidated in MNCN/PMS-Light system. Adequate results indicate that Mn (III) only provide a few electrons to decompose Mn (III)-PMS* complex under light irradiation. Thus, the lacking electrons necessarily are supplied from BPA, resulting in its greater removal, then the decomposition of the Mn (III)-PMS* complex and light synergism form the surface Mn (IV) species. Above Mn-PMS complex and surface Mn (IV) species lead to the BPA oxidation in MNCN/PMS-Light system without the involvement of sulfate (SO₄^{• ̶}) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH). The study provides a new understanding for accelerating non-radical reaction in light/PMS system for the selective removal of contaminant.

Carbon Dots Based Photoinduced Reactions: Advances and Perspective

Seeking clean energy as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels is the inevitable choice to realize the sustainable development of the society. Photocatalytic technique is considered a promising energy conversion approach to store the abundant solar energy into other wieldy energy carriers like chemical energy. Carbon dots, as a class of fascinating carbon nanomaterials, have already become the hotspots in numerous photoelectric researching fields and particularly drawn keen interests as metal-free photocatalysts owing to strong UV-vis optical absorption, tunable energy-level configuration, superior charge transfer ability, excellent physicochemical stability, facile fabrication, low toxicity, and high solubility. In this review, the classification, microstructures, general synthetic methods, optical and photoelectrical properties of carbon dots are systematically summarized. In addition, recent advances of carbon dots based photoinduced reactions including photodegradation, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, CO₂ conversion, N₂ fixation, and photochemical synthesis are highlighted in detail, deep insights into the roles of carbon dots in various systems combining with the photocatalytic mechanisms are provided. Finally, several critical issues remaining in photocatalysis field are also proposed.

Hydrothermal carbonization of alfalfa: role of processing variables on hydrochar properties

Hydrothermal carbonization of alfalfa is a potential way to reuse agricultural waste. However, the effects of hydrothermal conditions on the properties of alfalfa-derived hydrochar are not clear. Herein, this study investigated the impact of different synthesis conditions (e.g., heating temperature, heating time, and solid to liquid ratio) on the formation and properties of hydrochar. Characterization and thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that with the increase of hydrothermal temperature and the extension of time, cellulose in alfalfa broken down more completely, and the number of carbon spheres and the aromatization degree increased, while the functional groups decreased. Furthermore, there was a surge in the carbon content, fixed carbon yield, high heating value, reduced oxygen, and volatile content. Additionally, the enhancement solid-liquid ratio could effectively improve the energy and mass yields. In all, by adjusting the process parameters of hydrochar, cleaner and higher productivity products could be obtained. This study provides theory basis for the production of target hydrochar that is used to soil amendments, adsorbents, and energy sources in the future.

Colloidal Behavior and Biodegradation of Engineered Carbon-Based Nanomaterials in Aquatic Environment

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have attracted a growing interest over the last decades. They have become a material commonly used in industry, consumer products, water purification, and medicine. Despite this, the safety and toxic properties of different types of CNMs are still debatable. Multiple studies in recent years highlight the toxicity of CNMs in relation to aquatic organisms, including bacteria, microalgae, bivalves, sea urchins, and other species. However, the aspects that have significant influence on the toxic properties of CNMs in the aquatic environment are often not considered in research works and require further study. In this work, we summarized the current knowledge of colloidal behavior, transformation, and biodegradation of different types of CNMs, including graphene and graphene-related materials, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, and carbon quantum dots. The other part of this work represents an overview of the known mechanisms of CNMs' biodegradation and discusses current research works relating to the biodegradation of CNMs in aquatic species. The knowledge about the biodegradation of nanomaterials will facilitate the development of the principals of "biodegradable-by-design" nanoparticles which have promising application in medicine as nano-carriers and represent lower toxicity and risks for living species and the environment.

Photocatalytic materials modified with carbon quantum dots for the degradation of organic pollutants under visible light: A review

In recent years, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have received widespread attention owing to their non-toxicity, sustainability, excellent photostability, and intrinsic photoluminescence properties. In particular, CQDs have attracted considerable interest for visible-light-driven photocatalysis because of their excellent electron transfer characteristics and high light capture efficiency. Many studies have reported CQDs/photocatalyst composite systems constructed to make full use of the solar spectrum, improving the ability of photocatalytic materials to degrade organic pollutants. Here, we review the recent research on CQDs-based photocatalysts, and their ability to remove environmental pollutants, with a special emphasis on degradation mechanisms. Several improvements in the catalytic response of CQDs to visible light are also included. In addition, we discuss the aspects that should be considered to construct composite materials based on CQD characteristics and the potential applications of CQD-based photocatalysts for efficient utilization of visible light.

A Hydrothermal Method to Generate Carbon Quantum Dots from Waste Bones and Their Detection of Laundry Powder

Surfactants are one of the major pollutants in laundry powder, which have an impact on the environment and human health. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are spherical zero-dimensional fluorescent nanoparticles with great potential for fluorescent probing, electrochemical biosensing and ion sensing. Herein, a bottom-up approach was developed for the synthesis of CQDs from biomass to detect laundry detergent and laundry powder. Waste chicken bones were used as carbon precursors after being dried, crushed and reacted with pure water at 180 °C for 4 h to generate CQDs, which exhibited a monodisperse quasi-spherical structure with an average particle size of 3.2 ± 0.2 nm. Functional groups, including -OH, C=O, C=C and C-O, were identified on the surface of the prepared CQDs. The optimal fluorescence excitation wavelength of the yellow-brown CQDs was 380 nm, with a corresponding emission peak at 465 nm. CQDs did not significantly increase cell death in multiple cell lines at concentrations of 200 µg·mL⁻¹. Fluorescence enhancement of CQDs was observed after addition of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, a major anionic surfactant in laundry powder. A linear relationship between fluorescence enhancement CQDs and the concentration of laundry powder was established. Thus, a hydrothermal method was developed to generate CQDs from waste biomass that may be used as a fluorescent probe to detect laundry powder.

Dissecting the roles of conductive materials in attenuating antibiotic resistance genes: Evolution of physiological features and bacterial community

Supplying conductive materials (CMs) into anaerobic bioreactors is considered as a promising technology for antibiotic wastewater treatment. However, whether and how CMs influence antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) spread remains poorly known. Here, we investigated the effects of three CMs, i.e., magnetite, activated carbon (AC), and zero valent iron (ZVI), on ARGs dissemination during treating sulfamethoxazole wastewater, by dissecting the shifts of physiological features and microbial community. With the addition of magnetite, AC, and ZVI, the SMX removal was improved from 49.05 to 71.56-92.27 %, while the absolute abundance of ARGs reducing by 26.48 %, 61.95 %, 48.45 %, respectively. The reduced mobile genetic elements and antibiotic resistant bacteria suggested the inhibition of horizontal and vertical transfer of ARGs. The physiological features, including oxidative stress response, quorum sensing, and secretion system may regulate horizontal transfer of ARGs. The addition of all CMs relieved oxidative stress compared with no CMs, but ZVI may cause additional free radicals that needs to be concerned. Further, ZVI and AC also interfered with cell communication and secretion system. This research deepens the insights about the underlying mechanisms of CMs in regulating ARGs, and is expected to propose practical ways for mitigating ARGs proliferation.

Constructing novel graphitic carbon nitride-based nanocomposites - From the perspective of material dimensions and interfacial characteristics

Two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), a fascinating metal-free conjugated polymer, has garnered immense interest in the fields of solar power generation and environmental remediation. The construction of g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites with materials of various dimensions can further improve their photocatalytic activities by surface area enlargement, bandgap tuning, heterojunction formation, etc. In this paper, we comprehensively reviewed the design, synthesis, and functionalities of g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites based on their applications in hydrogen evolution, CO₂ reduction, and pollutants removal. We provided detailed analyses on the integration of 2D g-C₃N₄ with zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional materials with a focus on their interfacial characteristics and functional improvement. This review aims to stimulate fresh ideas on the interfacial engineering of g-C₃N₄-based nanocomposites to broaden their future applications.

Broad Spectral Response Z-Scheme Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous Carbon Quantum Dots/TiO2/g-C3N4 Composite for Boosting Photocatalysis

Photocatalytic degradation technology is one of the effective protocols to solve environmental problems. TiO₂ has always been favored for its photostability and low cost. However, the insufficient photocatalytic activity of TiO₂ limits its application due to the severe recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes and a narrow light response range. Therefore, 3DTCN, a TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ composite with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure was prepared by a colloidal crystal template technique to form a heterojunction for inhibiting the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. On 3DTCN, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were loaded by impregnation to obtain x % CQDs/3DTCN with a broad spectral response to light. The physical and chemical properties of samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution-TEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated via degrading the rhodamine B (RhB) dye, and the degradation efficiency of 1% CQDs/3DTCN (98%) was found to be much higher than that of 3DTCN (42%) in 80 min under simulated sunlight irradiation. Furthermore, it also possessed excellent durability. Meanwhile, the sample also showed an outstanding photoelectric property. Finally, the proposed mechanism of the composites had been mainly analyzed by density functional theory calculations. This work thus provides an idea to form a 3D structure heterojunction and further improve the photocatalytic activity.

Highly sensitive and selective detection of butachlor based on the resonance light scattering of doped carbon quantum dots

In this work, a new method of resonance light scattering was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of butachlor. Firstly, buckwheat was used as the main carbon source to prepare a new type of doped carbon quantum dot using the hydrothermal method. A new method for the determination of butachlor was then established by the change in resonance light scattering intensity after the addition of butachlor into the doped carbon quantum dot solution. The detection effect was successfully optimized by investigating the optimum reaction conditions. Under the optimum conditions, the resonance light scattering intensity of doped carbon quantum dots was greatly enhanced at 460 nm after the addition of butachlor, and the intensity changes were linearly correlated with the butachlor concentration in the range of 1-7 μg L^-1. The detection limit was 0.136 μg L^-1, and the recoveries ranged between 98.6% and 101.8%. This method was also used for butachlor detection in environmental water.

Insights into removal of sulfonamides in anaerobic activated sludge system: Mechanisms, degradation pathways and stress responses

The fate of antibiotics in activated sludge has attracted increasing interests. However, the focus needs to shift from concerning removal efficiencies to understanding mechanisms and sludge responding to antibiotic toxicity. Herein, we operated two anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs) for 200 days with sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) added. The removal efficiency of SMX was higher than that of SDZ. SDZ was removed via adsorption (9.91-21.18%) and biodegradation (10.20-16.00%), while biodegradation (65.44-86.26%) was dominant for SMX removal. The mechanisms involved in adsorption and biodegradation were investigated, including adsorption strength, adsorption sites and the roles of enzymes. Protein-like substance (tryptophan) functioned vitally in adsorption by forming complexes with sulfonamides. P450 enzymes may catalyze sulfonamides degradation via hydroxylation and desulfurization. Activated sludge showed distinct responses to different sulfonamides, reflected in the changes of microbial communities and functions. These responses were related to sulfonamides removal, corresponding to the stronger adsorption capacity of activated sludge in ASBR-SDZ and degradation capacity in ASBR-SMX. Furthermore, the reasons for different removal efficiencies of sulfonamides were analyzed according to steric and electronic effects. These findings propose insights into antibiotic removal and broaden the knowledge for self-protection mechanisms of activated sludge under chronic toxicities of antibiotics.

CQDs/biochar from reed straw modified Z-scheme MgIn2S4/BiOCl with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance for carbamazepine degradation in water

The application of environmental-friendly and sustainable green materials in constructing photocatalysts to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) attracts more attention. Herein, biochar (BC) or biomass carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were used to modify MgIn₂S₄/BiOCl (MB) heterojunction photocatalyst with Z-scheme structure, and improved the photocatalytic degradation performance for carbamazepine (CBZ) in the aqueous solution. Both BC and CQDs could form electron transfer interface with MB heterojunction, resulting in the photodegradation rate of MgIn₂S₄/BiOCl/CQDs (MBC, 96.43%) and MgIn₂S₄/BiOCl/BC (MBB, 88.09%) to CBZ within 120 min visible-light irradiation, which were significantly higher than that of MB (65.84%). Moreover, photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence tests verified that CQDs could act as a bridge for storing and transferring electrons in the entire Z-scheme system. Thence, compared with MBB, MBC could produce more •OH and •O₂^- under the visible light, which was indicated by the results of radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance. Interestingly, under the natural sunlight, the photocatalytic performance of MBC to CBZ was even better than under laboratory conditions. In addition, the TOC removal efficiencies of MBB and MBC could reach 85.09% and 93.79% respectively, and ECOSAR program was utilized to further evaluate the eco-toxicity of CBZ and the intermediates towards fish, daphnid, and green algae, indicating that the photocatalytic process involving MBB and MBC showed outstanding toxicity reduction performance. Finally, compared with other composites, MBB and MBC showed higher photocatalytic performance and lower energy consumption, which would provide a green strategy for biochar materials in the photocatalytic treatment of PPCPs in water.

Insight into biosorption of heavy metals by extracellular polymer substances and the improvement of the efficacy: a review

Heavy metals are continuously released into aquatic environments in which they accumulate. This phenomenon endangers public health because heavy metals accumulate along the food chain. However, conventional remediation methods are inefficient, expensive and yield toxic intermediate products, which adversely affect the environment. The discovery of green bio-adsorbents such as microbial extracellular polymer substance (EPS) has quickly attracted considerable worldwide attention because of their low cost, high removal efficiency of heavy metals and industrial availability. Hence, this review considers the sources, hazards and treatment methods of heavy metals pollution, particularly the biosorption mechanism of EPS to heavy metals and the influencing factors of the bio-adsorption process, which are significant in the efficient removal of heavy metals-containing wastewater treatment. This review also focuses on strengthening the process of EPS adsorption of heavy metals, which can further contribute to heavy metals removal. Finally, it has been proposed that improving the yield, stability, selectivity and recoverability of EPS is the key direction of further research.

Novel Nonradical Oxidation of Sulfonamide Antibiotics with Co(II)-Doped g-C3N4-Activated Peracetic Acid: Role of High-Valent Cobalt-Oxo Species

Herein, we report that Co(II)-doped g-C₃N₄ can efficiently trigger peracetic acid (PAA) oxidation of various sulfonamides (SAs) in a wide pH range. Quite different from the traditional radical-generating or typical nonradical-involved (i.e., singlet oxygenation and mediated electron transfer) catalytic systems, the PAA activation follows a novel nonradical pathway with unprecedented high-valent cobalt-oxo species [Co(IV)] as the dominant reactive species. Our experiments and density functional theory calculations indicate that the Co atom fixated into the nitrogen pots of g-C₃N₄ serves as the main active site, enabling dissociation of the adsorbed PAA and conversion of the coordinated Co(II) to Co(IV) via a unique two-electron transfer mechanism. Considering Co(IV) to be highly electrophilic in nature, different substituents (i.e., five-membered and six-membered heterocyclic moieties) on the SAs could affect their nucleophilicity, thus leading to the differences in degradation efficiency and transformation pathway. Also, benefiting from the selective oxidation of Co(IV), the established oxidative system exhibits excellent anti-interference capacity and achieves satisfactory decontamination performance under actual water conditions. This study provides a new nonradical approach to degrade SAs by efficiently activating PAA via heterogeneous cobalt-complexed catalysts.

Highly Efficient Flower-Like Graphene Quantum Dots-Based Fuschin Photocatalyst for Selective NAD(P)H Cofactor Regeneration Under Solar Light Irradiation

To meet the energy demands artificial photosynthesis is playing the most promising role these days. Using sunlight directly in a manner that can provide useful chemicals is a sustainable means of generating energy. Studies are going on in this context to make better and effective photocatalyst. In this paper, we study the synthesis of flower-like graphene quantum dots-based fuschin (GQDF) photocatalyst from lemon_, which is created by a green and sustainable process that is effective and environment friendly. The UV-visible spectra of prepared GQDF showed a high molar extinction coefficient. A flower-like GQDF photocatalyst has better catalytic efficiency for the selective creation and regeneration of the NAD(P)H cofactor. A newly designed flower-like GQDF photocatalyst is used as one of its most effective photocatalysts as they have several additional applications in the removal of CO₂ and aqueous contaminants like heavy metals.

Multipath elimination of bisphenol A over bifunctional polymeric carbon nitride/biochar hybrids in the presence of persulfate and visible light

Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has become a star material either in photocatalysis or in persulfate (PS) activation. In this work, we synthesized bifunctional biochar (BC)-doped PCN through a facile one-pot thermal treatment process. The PCN/BC hybrid (CNBC) with an optimized proportion could not only activate PS directly, but also possessed improved optical properties. Amorphous BC domains generated from the carbonization of external corncob provided attachments for the in-situ growth of PCN and upgraded its catalytic ability including electron transport property, visible light (VIS) utilization, and oxidation power. Mechanism studies demonstrated that in the CNBC/PS system without VIS, a nonradical electron transfer route was responsible for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA), while in the CNBC/PS/VIS system, radical/nonradical mixing mechanisms including mediated electron transfer, radical oxidation, and hole oxidation were unveiled. Degradation pathways of BPA were deduced including direct oxidation at the aromatic ring, β-scission of isopropyl, and ring cleavage. Most of the intermediates were less toxic than BPA as assessed by the ECOSAR software. The CNBC/PS/VIS system showed satisfactory resistance to environmental interferences except for HCO₃^-. This work provides a simple but effective strategy for the synthesis of PCN-based bifunctional catalysts and deepens mechanistic insights into hybrid advanced oxidation technologies.

Insights into the oxidation of organic contaminants by Co(II) activated peracetic acid: The overlooked role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species

The combination of Co(II) and peracetic acid (PAA) is a promising advanced oxidation process for the abatement of refractory organic contaminants, and acetylperoxy (CH₃CO₃^•) and acetoxyl (CH₃CO₂^•) radicals are generally recognized as the dominant and selective intermediate oxidants. However, the role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species [Co(IV)] have been overlooked. Herein, we confirmed that Co(II)/PAA reaction enables the generation of Co(IV) at acidic conditions based on multiple lines of evidences, including methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO)-based probe experiments, ¹⁸O isotope-labeling technique, and in situ Raman spectroscopy. In-depth investigation reveals that the PAA oxidation mechanism is strongly pH dependent. The elevation of solution pH could induce major oxidants converting from Co(IV) to oxygen-centered radicals (i.e., CH₃CO₃^• and CH₃CO₂^•). The presence of H₂O₂ competitively consumes both Co(IV) and reactive radicals generated from Co(II)/PAA process, and thus, leading to an undesirably decline in catalytic performance. Additionally, as a highly reactive and selective oxidant, Co(IV) reacts readily with organic substances bearing electron-rich groups, and efficiently attenuating their biological toxicity. Our findings enrich the fundamental understanding of Co(II) and PAA reaction and will be useful for the application of Co(IV)-mediated processes.

Bio-CQDs surface modification BiOCl for the BPA elimination and evaluation in visible light: The contribution of C-localized level

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) doping semiconductors can boost solar-to-hydrogen conversion and the photodegradation in VIS-NIR light, therefore attract great attention, but the perspective of CQDs role is seldom explored. Here, a biomass-CQDs was assembled with BiOCl (CQDs/BiOCl), then served as the visible-photodegradation model for a mechanistic investigation. Furthermore, CQDs/BiOCl removed 90% bisphenol A (BPA) within 2 h under visible light. It was attributed to the C-localized state (CLS) produced by CQDs, which transfers forceless photo-electrons (e^-) to generate holes (h⁺) in the CQDs/BiOCl valence band (VB) under visible light, the h⁺ mainly involved in the BPA degradation process. Then, the electrochemical experiments and theoretical calculations further proved that the efficiencies of charge separation (η_CS) and injection (η_CI) were proved by CQDs. Meanwhile, the possible BPA degradation pathways were accordingly proposed, and the ecotoxicity evaluation of the intermediates was also conducted by ECOSAR. The transformation pathways of BPA were divided into five orientations, and the toxicity of intermediates was decreased for Fish (LC50, ChV), Daphnid (LC50, ChV), Algae (EC50, ChV) except for P10 and P12. As the result, this study confirmed the feasibility of bio-CQDs/BiOCl preparation and it could be a photocatalyst to remove and detoxify BPA under visible light.

Near-infrared emission Cu, N-doped carbon dots for human umbilical vein endothelial cell labeling and their biocompatibility in vitro

Quantum dots (QDs) are luminescent semiconductor nanomaterials (NMs) with various biomedical applications, but the high toxicity associated with traditional QDs, such as Cd-based QDs, limits their uses in biomedicine. As such, the development of biocompatible metal-free QDs has gained extensive research interests. In this study, we synthesized near-infrared emission Cu, N-doped carbon dots (CDs) with optimal emission at 640 nm and a fluorescence quantum yield of 27.1% (in N,N-dimethylformamide [DMF]) by solvothermal method using o-phenylenediamine and copper acetate monohydrate. We thoroughly characterized the CDs and showed that they were highly fluorescent and stable under different conditions, although in highly acidic (pH = 1-2) or alkaline (pH = 12-13) solutions, a redshift or blueshift of fluorescence emission peak of Cu, N-doped CDs was also observed. When exposed to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), Cu, N-doped CDs only significantly induced cytotoxicity at very high concentrations (100 or 200 μg/ml), but their cytotoxicity appeared to be comparable with carbon black (CB) nanoparticles (NPs) at the same mass concentrations. As the mechanisms, 200 μg/ml Cu, N-doped CDs and CB NPs promoted endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress proteins IRE1α and chop, leading to increased cleaved caspase 3/pro-caspase 3 ratio, but CB NPs were more effective. At noncytotoxic concentration (50 μg/ml), Cu, N-doped CDs successfully labeled HUVECs. In summary, we successfully prepared highly fluorescent and relatively biocompatible CDs to label HUVECs in vitro.
