Formation mechanism and properties of NiCoFeLDH@ZIF-67 composites

Spatial Confinement of Lithium Borohydride in Bimetallic CoNi-Doped Hollow Carbon Frameworks for Stable Hydrogen Storage

While lithium borohydride is one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials due to its ultrahigh hydrogen storage density, high thermodynamic stability, kinetic barriers, and poor reversibility, it is far from being used in practical applications. Herein, we prepare a cubic hollow carbon dodecahedron uniformly modified with a bimetallic CoNi alloy (CoNi/NC) for preserving the stable catalytic effect of CoNi alloys toward reversible hydrogen storage. It is theoretically confirmed that bimetallic CoNi alloys effectively weaken the B-H bonds of LiBH4 by extending their average length to 1.33, 0.09 and 0.04 Å longer than that of LiBH4 and LiBH4 under metallic Co, respectively. More importantly, the alloying of Co with Ni avoids the reattachment of H from LiBH4 to the Co surface, which prevents LiBH4 from dehydrogenation for the formation of H2 on the Co surface, thus resulting in an ultralow hydrogen desorption energy of 0.1, 1.85 and 0.52 eV lower than that of LiBH4 and LiBH4 under metallic Co. Therefore, the onset and peak hydrogen desorption temperatures decrease to 130 and 355 °C, respectively, 170 and 97 °C lower than that of bulk LiBH4. More importantly, a reversible H2 capacity of 9.4 wt % is achieved even after 10 cycles.

Stabilizing Ni2+ in Hollow Nano MOF/Polymetallic Phosphides Composites for Enhanced Electrochemical Performance in 3D-Printed Micro-Supercapacitors

Polymetallic phosphides exhibit favorable conductivities. A reasonable design of nano-metal-organic frame (MOF) composite morphologies and in situ introduction of polymetallic phosphides into the framework can effectively improve electrolyte penetration and rapid electron transfer. To address existing challenges, Ni, with a strong coordination ability with N, is introduced to partially replace Co in nano-Co-MOF composite. The hollow nanostructure is stabilized through CoNi bimetallic coordination and low-temperature controllable polymetallic phosphide generation rate. The Ni, Co, and P atoms, generated during reduction, effectively enhance electron transfer rate within the framework. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) characterization results further confirm the existence of Ni-N, Ni-Ni, and Co-Co structures in the nanocomposite. The changes in each component during the charge-discharge process of the electrochemical reactions are investigated using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Theoretical calculations further confirm that P can effectively improve conductivity. VZNPGC//MXene MSCs, constructed with active materials derived from the hollow nano MOF composites synthesized through the Ni2+ stabilization strategy, demonstrate a specific capacitance of 1184 mF cm-2, along with an energy density of 236.75 µWh cm-2 (power density of 0.14 mW cm-2). This approach introduces a new direction for the synthesis of highly conductive nano-MOF composites.

Heterostructured MoO3 Anchored Defect-Rich NiFe-LDH/NF as a Robust Self-Supporting Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

The rational design of inexpensive metal electrocatalysts with exciting catalytic activity for overall water splitting (OWS) remains a significant challenge. Heterostructures of NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) with abundant oxygen defects and tunable electronic properties have garnered considerable attention. Here, a self-supporting heterostructured catalyst (named MoO3/NiFe-NF) is synthesized via a hydrothermal method to grow NiFe-LDH with oxygen vacancies (OV) in situ on inexpensive nickel foam (NF). Subsequently, MoO3 is anchored and grown on the surface of NiFe-LDH by electrodeposition. The obtained catalysts achieved outstanding oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER, 212 mV/85 mV@10 mA cm-2) performance in 1 m KOH. Additionally, when MoO3/NiFe-NF is utilized as the cathode and anode in OWS, a current density of 10 mA cm-2 can be obtained as an ultralow battery voltage of 1.43 V, a significantly lower value compared to the commercial electrolyzer incorporating Pt/C and IrO2 electrode materials. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and advanced spectroscopy technology are conducted to reveal the effects of heterojunctions and OV on the internal electronic structure of the electrical catalysts. Mainly, the present study provides a novel tactic for the rational design of remarkable, low-cost NiFe-LDH electrocatalysts with heterostructures for OWS.

Co, Fe Dual-Doped MoS2 Nanosheets on Polypyrrole Microtubes as Effective Peroxidase Mimics for Glutathione Sensing

Heteroatom doping is considered an effective way to enhance the catalytic activity of MoS2 nanosheets (NSs). In the paper, dual-metal doping was proposed to incorporate Fe and Co into hierarchical MoS2 ultrathin NSs, which grew directly on polypyrrole microtubes (Fe, Co-MoS2@PPy), for the enhanced enzyme-like catalytic reaction. The particular hollow tubular structure realized effective electron transfer. The doped Fe and Co tuned the electronic architecture of the MoS2 NSs to enhance the enzyme-like catalytic activity. The abundant exposed void spaces facilitated ion diffusion/penetration between the PPy interlayer and Fe-Co doped MoS2 shell, leading to heterostructured synergistic effects. Therefore, the synthesized Fe and Co-MoS2@PPy composites showed remarkable catalytic activity. The high catalytic efficiency of Fe and Co-MoS2@PPy was confirmed with the reaction of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and H2O2 for visible detection. The blue color disappeared after adding glutathione (GSH). Thus, this procedure was used as a convenient way to detect GSH with a detection limit of 0.76 μM. The dual-metal-doped strategy was confirmed to improve the performance of MoS2 nanocomposites and could be used as a promising matrix for other applications, such as electrochemical energy conversion, medical diagnosis, and others.

Co3 O4 Quantum Dots Intercalation Liquid-Crystal Ordered-Layered-Structure Optimizing the Performance of 3D-Printing Micro-Supercapacitors

The effects of near surface or surface mechanisms on electrochemical performance (lower specific capacitance density) hinders the development of 3D printed micro supercapacitors (MSCs). The reasonable internal structural characteristics of printed electrodes and the appropriate intercalation material can effectively compensate for the effects of surface or near-surface mechanisms. In this study, a layered structure is constructed inside an electrode using an ink with liquid-crystal characteristics, and the pore structure and oxidation active sites of the layered electrode are optimized by controlling the amount of Co3 O4 -quantum dots (Co3 O4 QDs). The Co3 O4 QDs are distributed in the pores of the electrode surface, and the insertion of Co3 O4 QDs can effectively compensate for the limitations of surface or near-surface mechanisms, thus effectively improving the pseudocapacitive characteristics of the 3D-printed MSCs. The 3D printed MSC exhibits a high area capacitance (306.13 mF cm-2 ) and energy density (34.44 µWh cm-2 at a power density of 0.108 mW cm-2 ). Therefore, selecting the appropriate materials to construct printable electrode structures and effectively adjusting material ratios for efficient 3D printing are expected to provide feasible solutions for the construction of various high-energy storage systems such as MSCs.

Recent Progress on the Synthesis and Modified Strategies of Zeolitic-Imidazole Framework-67 Towards Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

As a class of metal-organic framework, the zeolitic-imidazole framework-67 is constructed from bridging cobalt ions and 2-methylimidazole. The high content of abundant active cobalt species, uniform structure, ultrahigh porosity, and large surface area show the potential for multiple catalytic applications, especially electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The design and synthetic strategies of catalyst-based ZIF-67 that approach the maximized catalytic performance are still challenging in further development. Herein, the current progress strategy on the structural design, synthetic route, and functionalization of electrocatalysts based on ZIF-67 to boost the catalytic performance of OER is reviewed. Besides, the structurally designed catalyst from various fabricated strategies corresponding to enhancing catalytic activity is discussed. The emphasized review for understanding design and synthetic structure with catalytic performance could guide researchers in further developing catalyst-based ZIF-67 for improving the efficient electrocatalytic OER.

Ethanol-Induced Ni2+ -Intercalated Cobalt Organic Frameworks on Vanadium Pentoxide for Synergistically Enhancing the Performance of 3D-Printed Micro-Supercapacitors

The synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposites with high energy density and excellent mechanical strength is limited by the degree of lattice matching and crystal surface structure. In this study, dodecahedral ZIF-67 is synthesized uniformly on vanadium pentoxide nanowires. The influence of the coordination mode on the surface of ZIF-67 in ethanol is also investigated. Benefitting from the different coordination abilities of Ni²⁺ , Co²⁺ , and N atoms, spatially separated surface-active sites are created through metal-ion exchange. Furthermore, the incompatibility between the d⁸ electronic configuration of Ni²⁺ and the three-dimensional (3D) structure of ZIF-67 afforded the synthesis of hollow structures by controlling the amount of Ni doping. The formation of NiCo-MOF@CoOOH@V₂ O₅ nanocomposites is confirmed using X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. The high performance of the obtained composite is illustrated by fabricating a 3D-printed micro-supercapacitor, exhibiting a high area specific capacitance of 585 mF cm^-2 and energy density of 159.23 µWh cm^-2 (at power density = 0.34 mW cm^-2 ). The solvent/coordination tuning strategy demonstrated in this study provides a new direction for the synthesis of high-performance nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage applications.

In Situ Coupling of Carbon Dots with Co-ZIF Nanoarrays Enabling Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as one promising class of precatalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet most of them suffer from poor conductivity and lack of coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, which hinders the fast electrochemical reconstruction and thus a poor OER activity. To address this issue, a unique heterocomposite has been constructed by in situ inserting carbon dots (CDs) into cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (Co-ZIF) nanosheet arrays (Co-ZIF/CDs/CC) in the presence of carbon cloth (CC) via one-pot coprecipitation for alkaline OER. Benefiting from the synergism between CDs and Co-ZIF subunits such as superior conductivity, strong charge interaction as well as abundant metal sites exposure, the Co-ZIF/CDs/CC exhibits an enhanced promotion effect for OER and contributes to the deep phase transformation from CDs-coupled Co-ZIF to CDs-coupled active CoOOH. As expected, the achieved Co-ZIF/CDs/CC only requires an overpotential of 226 mV to deliver 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, which is lower than that of Co-ZIF/CC and superior to most previously reported CC-supported MOF precatalysts. Moreover, it can also maintain a large current density of 100 mA cm^-2 for 24 h with negligible activity decay.

Ordered porous and uniform electric-field-strength micro-supercapacitors by 3D printing based on liquid-crystal V2O5 nanowires compositing carbon nanomaterials

The design of electrode internal structure plays an important role in improving the performance of micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). However, the complexity of the program hinders the development and application of Three-dimensional(3D)-printed MSCs. Herein, printable inks were prepared by using vanadium pentoxide nanowires as active materials, carbon nanotubes as collector and conductive agent, graphene oxide as adhesive, scaffold and water retaining agent. Benefiting from the liquid-crystal properties of materials and 3D printing technology as well as the adjustment of the materials proportion, onion-like structures with ordered porous layered structure and uniform electric-field-strength MSCs were constructed. The 3D-printed MSC has fine area capacitance (34.68 mF cm^-2) and area energy density (1.73 µWh cm^-2 at a current density of 0.24 mA cm^-2). Therefore, using the unique characteristics of materials to build an efficient 3D printing strategy is expected to provide a feasible solution for the construction of various MSCs and other high-energy storage systems.
