Abstract
In this contribution, we describe the various research domains in which RuII alkynyl derivatives are involved. Their peculiar molecular properties stem from a strong and intimate overlap between the metal centered d orbitals and the π system of the acetylide ligands, resulting in plethora of fascinating properties such as strong and tunable visible light absorption with a strong MLCT character essential for sensing, photovoltaics, light-harvesting applications or non-linear optical properties. Likewise, the d/π mixing results in tunable redox properties at low potential due to the raising of the HOMO level, and making those compounds particularly suited to achieve redox switching of various properties associated to the acetylide conjugated ligand, such as photochromism, luminescence or magnetism, for charge transport at the molecular level and in field effect transistor devices, or charge storage for memory devices. Altogether, we show in this review the potential of RuII acetylide compounds, insisting on the molecular design and suggesting further research developments for this class of organometallic dyes, including supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
Two polyhedral silver-thiolate clusters, [S@Ag16(Tab)10(MeCN)8](PF6)14 (Ag16) and [Ag12(Tab)6(DMF)12](PF6)12 (Ag12), were synthesized by using electroneutral Tab species as protective ligands (Tab=4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide, MeCN=acetonitrile). Ag16 has a decahedral shape composed of eight pentagon {Ag5} units and two square {Ag4} units. The structure of Ag12 is a cuboctahedron, a classical Archimedean structure composed of six triangular faces and eight square faces. The former configuration is discovered in silver-thiolate cluster for the first time, possibly benefited from the more flexible coordination between the Tab ligand and Ag+ facilitated by the electropositive -N(CH3)3 + substituent group. Third-order nonlinear optical studies show that both clusters in DMF exhibit reverse saturate absorption response under the irradiation of 532 nm laser.

Abstract
By employing enantiomerically pure mono-bidentate N-donors (LR/LS) as chiral bridging ligands to react with Cu(ClO4)2(H2O)6 in CH3CN-DMF mixed solvent, respectively, a pair of ionic one-dimensional (1D) Cu(II) chain enantiomers formulated as {[CuLR(CH3CN)(DMF)H2O](ClO4)2}n/{[CuLS(CH3CN)(DMF)H2O](ClO4)2}n (D-1/L-1) were isolated and structurally characterized, where LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinenepyridyl-2-pyrazine. They crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) P212121 space group of an orthorhombic system due to the introduction of chiral LR/LS, and the ClO4- groups as counteranions reside in crystal lattices, thus leading to charge separation with large dipole moments in their molecular structures. Based on crystal samples, investigation on their nonlinear optical (NLO) behaviors showed that D-1 and L-1 display simultaneously much larger second- and third-harmonic generation (SHG and THG) responses than their analogues based on the same chiral N-donors (LR/LS) and Cu(NO3)2(H2O)3 with NO3- acting as the coordination group to bind Cu(II) ions. The SHG intensities of D-1/L-1 are 0.62/0.60 × KDP (KH2PO4), and THG intensities of D-1/L-1 are 238/228 × α-SiO2. Our finding indicates that coordination polymers (CPs) with charge separation and NCS structures, i.e., ionic CPs with NCS arrangements are the ideal NLO crystalline materials for the simultaneous observation of large SHG and THG responses, thus providing a new approach to obtain NLO-active CP crystalline materials with high-performance SHG and THG responses.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is among the naturally occurring heavy metal with elemental, organic, and inorganic distributions in the environment. Being considered a global pollutant, high pools of Hg-emissions ranging from >6000 to 8000 Mg Hg/year get accumulated by the natural and anthropogenic activities in the atmosphere. These toxicants have high persistence, toxicity, and widespread contamination in the soil, water, and air resources. Hg accumulation inside the plant parts amplifies the traces of toxic elements in the linking food chains, leads to Hg exposure to humans, and acts as a potential genotoxic, neurotoxic and carcinogenic entity. However, excessive Hg levels are equally toxic to the plant system and severely disrupt the physiological and metabolic processes in plants. Thus, a plausible link between Hg-concentration and its biogeochemical behavior is highly imperative to analyze the plant-soil interactions. Therefore, it is requisite to bring these toxic contaminants in between the acceptable limits to safeguard the environment. Plants efficiently incorporate or absorb the bioavailable Hg from the soil thus a constructive understanding of Hg uptake, translocation/sequestration involving specific heavy metal transporters, and detoxification mechanisms are drawn. Whereas recent investigations in biological remediation of Hg provide insights into the potential associations between the plants and microbes. Furthermore, intense research on Hg-induced antioxidants, protein networks, metabolic mechanisms, and signaling pathways is required to understand these bioremediations techniques. This review sheds light on the mercury (Hg) sources, pollution, biogeochemical cycles, its uptake, translocation, and detoxification methods with respect to its molecular approaches in plants.

Abstract
Substitution of the diglyme ligand of [Eu(hfa)3(diglyme)] (where hfa is hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with a simple 1,10-phenanthroline leads to a six-fold increase of the product μβEFISH, as measured by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique. Similarly, [Eu(tta)3(1,10-phenanthroline)] (where Htta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) is characterized by a large second-order NLO response. Both 1,10-phenanthroline europium complexes have great potential as multifunctional materials for photonics.

Abstract
Metal-free and metal-containing molecular trefoil knots are fascinating ensembles that are usually covalently assembled, the latter requiring the rational design of di- or multidentate/multipodal ligands as connectors. In this work, we describe the self-assembly of pentadecanuclear AuI trefoil knots [Au15 (C≡CR)15 ] from monoalkynes HC≡CR (R=9,9-X2 -fluorenyl with X=nBu, n-hexyl) and [AuI (THT)Cl]. Hetero-bimetallic counterparts [Au9 M6 (C≡CR)15 ] (M=Cu/Ag) were self-assembled by reactions of [Au15 (C≡CR)15 ] with [Cu(MeCN)4 ]+ /AgNO3 and HC≡CR. The type of pentadecanuclear trefoil knots described herein is characterized by X-ray crystallography, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS. [Au9 Cu6 (C≡CR)15 ] is relatively stable in hexane; its excited state properties were investigated. DFT calculations revealed that non-covalent metal-metal and metal-ligand interactions, together with longer alkyl chain-strengthened inter-ligand dispersion interactions, govern the stability of the trefoil knot structures.

Abstract
Fine tuning and switching of nonlinear optical response of ferrocene chromophores has been an area of considerable significance as evidenced by a large number of reports in the current literature. In this personal account, we present linear/nonlinear behavior and structure-activity relationships of several classes of donor-π-acceptor designs using organometallic and organic materials, developed by our research group during the last decade. The results especially the electronic absorption spectral and the hyper-Rayleigh scattering have been supported by theoretical calculations. Exploiting the redox behavior of ferrocene donor, we have demonstrated switching of quadratic nonlinear optical responses with reversible redox chemistry, which is a useful attribute of nonlinear optical materials. Based on the ease in synthesis, structure diversification and structure-based large and switchable second-order optical nonlinearity, these materials are potential candidates for electro-optic applications.

Abstract
The simulation of molecular descriptors of thiophene-based metal complexes has been performed using Gaussian 03 and Atomistic toolkit Virtual Nanolab (ATK-VNL) software. It is found that with respect to the obtained molecular descriptors, the molecules show distinct properties. The dimensions of the data set being large, the principal components (PC1 and PC2) have been obtained using principal component analysis (PCA). Analysis has been done for the Linear regression of principal components with first hyperpolarizability and second hyperpolarizability of the molecules. The results indicate that, of all the calculated molecular descriptors of thiophene-based metal complexes, the molecular energy (E), ionization energy (EI), and molecular dipole moment (D) plays a dominant role in determining their nonlinear optical properties i.e., the hyperpolarizability value, of the studied molecules. Also, the molecular descriptors, polarizability (P) and molar refractivity (MR), show considerable impact on the nonlinear optical properties of the studied molecules.

Abstract
Reactions of (NH4 )2 WS4 with CuCN, CuCN/1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bppa) or [Cu(MeCN)4 ]PF6 /bppa under different reaction conditions afforded a set of two- or three-dimensional W/Cu/S cluster-based coordination polymers including {[Et4 N]2 [WS4 Cu4 (μ-CN)2 (μ-I)2 ]}n (1), [WS4 Cu4 (μ-CN)2 (bppa)2 ]n (2) and {[WS4 Cu4 (bppa)4 ](PF6 )2 }n (3), respectively. Compound 2 can be readily formed from reaction of 1 with bppa under solvothermal conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 feature two-dimensional networks with a "sql" topology, while 3 possesses a two-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional net with a rare "reo" topology. Compounds 1-3 in DMF exhibited different third-order nonlinear optical responses, and they all showed a reverse saturable absorption while 2 held a strong self-focusing effect.

Abstract
We use the two-photon excited fluorescence method to determine the two-photon absorption (2PA) cross sections of three series of (fluorenyl benzothiazole) gold(I) complexes in the visible wavelength range from 570 to 700 nm. We compare the effect of ancillary ligand substitutions on the 2PA magnitudes and find that the ancillary ligand does not drastically affect either the magnitude or the shape of 2PA. Even so, moderate 2PA cross sections were measured that ranged from 10 to 1000 s of GM (Göppert-Mayer, =10-50cm4s/photon), making these types of complexes nonlinear optical materials for two-photon absorbing applications.

Abstract
Transition-metal complexes are attractive targets for the design of catalysts and functional materials. The behavior of the metal-organic bond, while very tunable for achieving target properties, is challenging to predict and necessitates searching a wide and complex space to identify needles in haystacks for target applications. This review will focus on the techniques that make high-throughput search of transition-metal chemical space feasible for the discovery of complexes with desirable properties. The review will cover the development, promise, and limitations of "traditional" computational chemistry (i.e., force field, semiempirical, and density functional theory methods) as it pertains to data generation for inorganic molecular discovery. The review will also discuss the opportunities and limitations in leveraging experimental data sources. We will focus on how advances in statistical modeling, artificial intelligence, multiobjective optimization, and automation accelerate discovery of lead compounds and design rules. The overall objective of this review is to showcase how bringing together advances from diverse areas of computational chemistry and computer science have enabled the rapid uncovering of structure-property relationships in transition-metal chemistry. We aim to highlight how unique considerations in motifs of metal-organic bonding (e.g., variable spin and oxidation state, and bonding strength/nature) set them and their discovery apart from more commonly considered organic molecules. We will also highlight how uncertainty and relative data scarcity in transition-metal chemistry motivate specific developments in machine learning representations, model training, and in computational chemistry. Finally, we will conclude with an outlook of areas of opportunity for the accelerated discovery of transition-metal complexes.

Abstract
A series of four D-(π-Pt-π-A)2 new V-shaped binuclear platinum(ii) complexes bearing a diphenylpyranylidene ligand as a pro-aromatic donor group (D) and various electron-attracting groups (A) separated by platinum bis-acetylide fragments have been synthesized, characterized and studied for their electrochemical, photophysical and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The nonlinear optical properties of these complexes have been determined by using the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) generation technique, and their optical properties have been rationalized by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations relying on a range-separated hybrid. All complexes display positive μβ0 values. In addition, the second-order NLO responses of the complexes could be easily modulated by incorporating various end-capped electron-attracting groups, namely malononitrile, indane-1,3-dione, pyrimidine and pyrimidinium. Remarkably, complex 7 bearing a pyrimidinium fragment displays the highest μβ0 value among all the complexes of this series. Its NLO response is twice as high as that of the mononuclear analogue complex RD2, which has been confirmed both experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract
Four coordination polymers (CPs) Mn-TMPP (1), Zn-TMPP (2), Mn-THPP (3), and Zn-THPP (4) have been synthesized and characterized (H2TMPP = meso-tetrakis (6-methylpyridin-3-yl) porphyrin; H2THPP = meso-tetrakis (6-(hydroxymethyl) pyridin-3-yl) porphyrin). The one-dimensional (1D) chain compound 1 is formed via a head-to-tail connection of the Mn-TMPP unit, wherein the central Mn2+ features a square pyramidal geometry coordinated by four N atoms from the porphyrin skeleton and one additional N atom from an adjacent Mn-TMPP unit. Compound 2 features an octahedral Zn2+ center associated with four N atoms from the porphyrin skeleton to define the equatorial plane and two additional N donors at the axial positions to give a two-dimensional (2D) CP. The 1D chain of 1 and the 2D layer of 2 possess distinctive molecular structures but nearly identical molecular arrangements in their unit cells viewed along all three crystallographic axes. By contrast, Mn- and Zn-based CPs 3 and 4 supported by the THPP ligand share both identical molecular connectivities and crystal packing. In 3/4, each Mn/Zn center is chelated by four N donors of the porphyrin interior to define the equatorial plane of an octahedron, whose axial sites are occupied by two alcoholic OH groups from a pair of trans-located pyridinemethanol moieties. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of 1-4 investigated using the Z-scan technique at 532 nm revealed reverse saturable absorption and self-focusing effects for all four CPs, with hyperpolarizability values (γ) in the range 1.42 × 10-28 esu to 7.64 × 10-28 esu. These high γ values are comparable to the best porphyrin-based molecular assemblies, demonstrating potential for these materials in optical limiting applications.

Abstract
The 1,4-diethynylbenzene motif is commonly employed as a bridging ligand in bimetallic molecular systems intended to show pronounced intramolecular electronic interactions, delocalized electronic structures and 'wire-like' properties between the metal fragments at the ligand termini. In contrast to these expectations, the donor-acceptor compounds [{Cp'(CO)xM'}(μ-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC6H4C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C){M(PP)Cp'}]n+ [n = 0, 1; M'(CO)xCp' = Fe(CO)2Cp, W(CO)3Cp*; M(PP)Cp' = Fe(dppe)Cp, Fe(dppe)Cp*, Ru(PPh3)2Cp, Ru(dppe)Cp, Ru(dppe)Cp*] display remarkably little bridge-mediated electronic interaction between the electron-rich {M(PP)Cp'} and electron-poor {M'(CO)xCp'} fragments in the ground state. However, a relatively high-energy (26 000-30 000 cm-1) M-to-M' charge transfer can be identified. One-electron oxidation is largely localized on the {M(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR)(PP)Cp'} fragment and gives rise to a new charge transfer band with bridging-ligand-to-{M(PP)Cp'}+ (M'(CO)xCp' = Fe(CO)2Cp) or M'-to-M(+) (M(CO)xCp' = W(CO)3Cp*) character. The localized electronic ground state of these complexes is better revealed through analysis of the IR spectra, taking advantage of the well-resolved ν(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C) and ν(CO) bands and IR spectroelectrochemical methods, than through the more classical analysis based on the concepts of Marcus-Hush theory and analysis of the putative IVCT electronic transition. The conclusions are supported by DFT calculations using the BLYP35 functional.

Abstract
The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of iridium(III) complexes having two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin or tetrahydrocurcumin as ancillary ligand have been investigated both in solution and as guest in a polymeric organic matrix. In solution, these complexes are characterized by a significant second-order NLO response, as determined by the Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) technique, like the related complex with acetylacetonate. Whereas the low second-harmonic generation response of a composite film of [Ir(2-phenylpyridine)2(acetylacetonate)] in polymethyl methacrylate was not stable and fell down to zero upon turning off the electric field. A good and stable response was obtained with a film based on the iridium(III) complex bearing two cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridines and curcumin.

Abstract
A series of cis-platinum(II) acetylide complexes containing two-photon-absorbing chromophores have been synthesized and characterized to explore the effects of stereochemistry on the nonlinear absorption properties. The molecules feature 4-(phenylethynyl)phenylethynylene (PE2), diphenylaminofluorene (DPAF), and benzothiazolylfluorene (BTF) ligands. The photophysical properties were investigated under one- and two-photon conditions and compared to the known trans analogues via UV-visible absorption, photoluminescence, femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption (TA), nanosecond z-scan, and femtosecond two-photon absorption (2PA). The bent cis complexes exhibit blue shifts in the absorption, emission, femtosecond, and nanosecond TA spectra along with lower molar extinction coefficients and lower phosphorescence yields relative to the trans complexes suggesting less efficient Pt-induced spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing in the cis configuration. The cis chromophores are noncentrosymmetric and therefore show dipolar behavior with a pronounced 2PA in the 0-0 transition of the S0 → S1 band, while the trans complexes show quadrupolar behavior with a forbidden 0-0 transition. In the S0 → Sn region, both cis and trans complexes show intense two-photon-absorption bands (up to 3700 GM by the peak cross section for cis-BTF) which contain a significant contribution from the excited state absorption (S1 → Sn). All six complexes exhibit comparable nonlinear absorption response with a significant contribution from triplet-triplet absorption that slightly favors trans complexes but is more strongly dependent upon the structure of the π-conjugated chromophore.

Abstract
This short review outlines the main results obtained in the field of molecular materials based on zinc coordination compounds for second-order nonlinear optics. It presents an overview of the main classes of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) active complexes bearing monodentate, bidentate, tridentate, or tetradentate π-delocalized ligands such as substituted stilbazoles, bipyridines, phenanthrolines, terpyridines, and Schiff bases. Macrocyclic ligands such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines are not covered. This paper shows how coordination to the Zn(II) center of π-delocalized nitrogen donor ligands produces a significant enhancement of their quadratic hyperpolarizability. Dipolar complexes are mainly presented, but octupolar zinc complexes are also presented. The coverage is mainly focused on NLO properties that are measured at the molecular level, working in solution, by means of the electric field-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) or the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) techniques.

Abstract
The performance of the CAM-B3LYP, ωB97X and LC-BLYP long-range corrected density functional theory methods in the calculation of molecular first hyperpolarizabilities (β) and low-lying charge transfer (CT) excitation energies of the metal alkynyl complexes M(C≡C-4-C6 H4 -1-NO2 )(κ2 -dppe)(η5 -C5 H5 ) [M=Fe (1), Ru (2), Os (3)] and trans-[Ru{C≡C-(1,4-C6 H4 C≡C)n -4-C6 H4 -1-NO2 }Cl(κ2 -dppm)2 ] [n=0 (4), 1 (5), 2 (6)] was assessed. The BLYP, B3LYP and PBE0 standard exchange-correlation functionals and the Hartree-Fock method were also examined. The BLYP functional was shown to perform poorly in the calculation of β and low-energy CT transitions. The hybrid functionals (B3LYP and PBE0) showed significant improvement over the pure functional BLYP, but overestimated the hyperpolarizability ratios and the wavelengths of the lowest energy metal-to-ligand CT transitions for 5 and 6. The effect of long-range corrections is noteworthy, particularly for the larger complexes, improving the calculation of β ratios for 4-6. However, CAM-B3LYP, ωB97X, and LC-BLYP considerably overestimated the low-lying CT energies. PBE0 was found to give the best transition energy match for 4. The influence of the phenylene ring orientation in the alkynyl ligand on the calculated properties is substantial, particularly for the larger complexes. For these types of calculations, a basis set with diffuse functions (at least 6-31+G(d)) for the heavy elements is recommended.

Abstract
Herein, new all-inorganic transparent composite films with the formula (Zn2Al-LDH/{Mo132-Ac})n have been fabricated by a layer-by-layer method using the exfoliated Zn2Al-LDH monolayer nanosheets and Keplerate-type macroanion {Mo132-Ac}. They were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, SEM, AFM, and XPS techniques. The Z-scan measurements, which were conducted under laser irradiation at a wavelength of 532 nm, a pulse width of 6 ns, a repetition rate of 10 Hz, and the light intensity at a focus E0 of 10 μJ, revealed that all the films had notable saturated absorption and self-defocusing effect with a large third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility χ(3). With an increase in the number of layers (i.e., n) corresponding to the increase in the thickness of the films, the third-order nonlinear absorption β and refractive effects of the films were improved (i.e., the χ(3) value was up to 1.99 × 10-11 esu when n = 24); this implied that the NLO responses could be modified by fine-tuning the thickness of the composite films to meet the demands of different devices.

Abstract
1-Nitronaphthalenyl-4-alkynyl and 9-nitroanthracenyl-10-alkynyl complexes [M](C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-4-C10H6-1-NO2) ([M] = trans-[RuCl(dppe)2] (6b), trans-[RuCl(dppm)2] (7b), Ru(PPh3)2(η5-C5H5) (8b), Ni(PPh3)(η5-C5H5) (9b), Au(PPh3) (10b)) and [M](C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-10-C14H8-9-NO2) ([M] = trans-[RuCl(dppe)2] (6c), trans-[RuCl(dppm)2] (7c), Ru(PPh3)2(η5-C5H5) (8c), Ni(PPh3)(η5-C5H5) (9c), Au(PPh3) (10c)) were synthesized and their identities were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Electrochemical studies and a comparison to the 1-nitrophenyl-4-alkynyl analogues [M](C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-4-C6H4-1-NO2) ([M] = trans-[RuCl(dppe)2] (6a), trans-[RuCl(dppm)2] (7a), Ru(PPh3)2(η5-C5H5) (8a), Ni(PPh3)(η5-C5H5) (9a), Au(PPh3) (10a)) reveal a decrease in oxidation potential for ruthenium and nickel complexes on proceeding from the phenyl- to naphthalenyl- and then anthracenyl-containing bridge. HOMO → LUMO transitions characteristic of MC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-1-C6H4 to 4-C6H4-1-NO2 charge transfer red-shift and gain in intensity on proceeding to the ruthenium complexes; the low-energy transitions have increasing ILCT character on proceeding from the phenyl- to naphthalenyl- and then anthracenyl-containing bridge. Spectroelectrochemical studies of the Ru-containing complexes reveal the appearance of low-energy bands corresponding to chloro-to-RuIII charge transfer that red-shift on proceeding from the phenyl- to naphthalenyl- and then anthracenyl-containing bridge. Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) studies at 1064 nm employing ns pulses and the hyper-Rayleigh scattering technique reveal an increase in quadratic optical nonlinearity upon introduction of metal to the precursor alkyne to afford alkynyl complexes and on proceeding from ligated-gold to -nickel and then to -ruthenium for a fixed alkynyl ligand. Quadratic NLO data of the gold complexes optically transparent at the second-harmonic wavelength reveal an increase in βHRS on proceeding from the phenyl- to the naphthalenyl-containing complex. Broad spectral range third-order nonlinear optical studies employing fs pulses and the Z-scan technique reveal an increase in two-photon absorption cross-section on replacing ligated-gold by -nickel and then -ruthenium for a fixed alkynyl ligand. Computational studies undertaken using time-dependent density functional theory have been employed to assign the nature of the key optical transitions and suggest that the significant optical nonlinearities observed for the ruthenium-containing complexes correlate with the low-energy formally Ru → NO2 band which possesses strong MLCT character, while the more moderate nonlinearities of the gold complexes correlate with a band higher in energy that is primarily ILCT in character.

Abstract
In this article, we describe the synthesis, redox characteristics, and linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of seven new unsymmetrical push-pull diacetylide platinum-based complexes. These D-π-Pt-π-A complexes incorporate pyranylidene ligands as pro-aromatic donor groups (D), diazine rings as electron-withdrawing groups (A), and various aromatic fragments (styryl or thienylvinyl) as π-linkers separating the platinum diacetylide unit from the donor and the acceptor groups. This is one of the first examples of push-pull chromophores incorporating a platinum center in the π-conjugated core. The NLO properties of these complexes were compared with those of their purely organic analogues. All compounds (organic and organometallic) exhibited positive μβ values, which dramatically increased upon methylation of the pyrimidine fragment. However, this increase was even more significant in the complexes due to the presence of platinum in the π-conjugated core. The effects of the linker on the redox and spectroscopic properties of the complexes are also discussed. In addition, DFT calculations were performed in order to gain further insight into the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) occurring through the platinum center.

Abstract
Non-linear optical (NLO) materials are able to modify the propagation characteristics of light. Such materials have a range of potential applications in advanced technologies and are therefore of considerable interest. This account summarizes the development of one class of organometallics as potential NLO materials, namely ruthenium alkynyl complexes. These are available in high yields by straightforward synthetic procedures and have good thermal and environmental stability. In studies ranging from small molecules (molecular weights ~1000) to second-generation dendrimers (with molecular weights of more than 20000), the author’s group and collaborators have assayed the NLO effects in complexes with a variety of ‘multipolar’ charge distributions (dipolar, quadrupolar, octupolar), revealing that ruthenium alkynyl complexes can be engineered to display record and near-record values of the parameters responsible for various interesting NLO effects. In particular, recent studies driven by the current focus on optimizing molecular multiphoton absorption cross-sections have afforded several examples with world-record values of these key coefficients. The author’s group has also shown that the fully reversible redox processes undergone by many ruthenium alkynyl complexes are a distinctive feature that can be exploited to afford molecular NLO switches, because the different and reversibly accessible redox forms of the complexes exhibit measurably different NLO responses. This unique type of switching has been extended in two ways to afford molecular switches with multiple accessible NLO states. First, ruthenium alkynyl complexes have been subjected to various ‘orthogonal’ (independent) switching stimuli (specifically oxidation–reduction, protonation–deprotonation, and photoisomerization), affording complexes that function as NLO switches with up to six distinct NLO states. Second, heterobimetallic complexes coupling ruthenium alkynyl and iron alkynyl centres have been prepared that exhibit multiple redox-accessible NLO states.
