Stereochemistry of lead(II) complexes with oxygen donor ligands

Tetramerization of BEB-Doped Phenalenyls to Obtain (BE)8-[16]Annulenes (E = N, O)

Two (BE)8-[16]annulenes were prepared and fully characterized by experimental and quantum-chemical means (1, E = N; 2, E = O). The 1,8-naphthalenediyl-bridged diborane(6) 3 served as their common starting material, which was treated with [Al(NH3)6]Cl3 to form 1 (91% yield) or with 1,8-naphthalenediboronic acid anhydride to form 2 (93% yield). As a result, the heteroannulenes 1 and 2 are supported by four aromatic "clamps" and may also be viewed as NH- or O-bridged cyclic tetramers of BNB- or BOB-doped phenalenyls. X-ray crystallography on mono-, di-, and tetraadducts 2·thf, 2·py2, and 2·py4 showed that 2 is an oligotopic Lewis acid (thf/py: tetrahydrofuran/pyridine donor). The applicability of 2 also as a Lewis basic ligand in coordination chemistry was demonstrated by the synthesis of the mononuclear Ag+ complex [Ag(py)2(2·py4)]+ and the dinuclear Pb2+ complex 6. During the assembly of 6, the rearrangement of 2 led to the formation of two (BO)9-macrocycles linked by two BOB-phenalenyls to form a nanometer-sized cage with four negatively charged, tetracoordinated B atoms. Both 1 and 2 show several redox waves in the cathodic regions of the cyclic voltammograms. An in-depth assessment of the consequences of electron injection on the aromaticity of 1 and 2 was achieved by electronic structure calculations. 1 and 2 are proposed to exhibit aromatic switching capabilities in the [16]annulene motif.

Equilibrium Thermodynamics of Macropa Complexes with Selected Metal Isotopes of Radiopharmaceutical Interest

To pursue the design of in vivo stable chelating systems for radiometals, a concise and straightforward method toolbox was developed combining NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and europium time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (Eu-TRLFS). For this purpose, the macropa chelator was chosen, and Lu3+, La3+, Pb2+, Ra2+, and Ba2+ were chosen as radiopharmaceutically relevant metal ions. They differ in charge (2+ and 3+) and coordination properties (main group vs lanthanides). 1H NMR was used to determine four pKa values (±0.15; carboxylate functions, 2.40 and 3.13; amino functions, 6.80 and 7.73). Eu-TRLFS was used to validate the exclusive existence of the 1:1 Mn+/ligand complex in the chosen pH range at tracer level concentrations. ITC measurements were accomplished to determine the resulting stability constants of the desired complexes, with log K values ranging from 18.5 for the Pb-mcp complex to 7.3 for the Lu-mcp complex. Density-functional-theory-calculated structures nicely mirror the complexes' order of stabilities by bonding features. Radiolabeling with macropa using ligand concentrations from 10-3 to 10-6 M was accomplished by pointing out the complex formation and stability (212Pb > 133La > 131Ba ≈ 224Ra > 177Lu) by means of normal-phase thin-layer chromatography analyses.

Ba1.09Pb0.91Be2(BO3)2F2: The First Pb-Containing Beryllium Borate Fluoride with Trigonal Prismatic PbO6 and 2D [Be3B3O6F3]∞ Layers

Ba_1.09Pb_0.91Be₂(BO₃)₂F₂ (BPBBF), a previously unreported lead-containing beryllium borate fluoride, has been successfully grown through a high-temperature flux method. Its structure is solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), and it is optically characterized via infrared, Raman, UV-vis-IR transmission, and polarizing spectra as well. SC-XRD data suggests that it can be indexed by a trigonal unit cell (space group P3m1) with lattice parameters a = 4.7478(6) Å, c = 8.3856(12) Å, Z = 1, and V = 163.70(5) Å. This material could be considered as a derivative of the Sr₂Be₂B₂O₇ (SBBO) structural motif. It consists of 2D [Be₃B₃O₆F₃]_∞ layers in the crystallographic ab plane, with divalent Ba²⁺ or Pb²⁺ cations serving as spacers among the adjacent layers. Ba and Pb were found to adopt a disordered arrangement in the trigonal prismatic coordination within the BPBBF structural lattice, which is evidenced by both structural refinements against SC-XRD data and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The UV absorption edge (279.1 nm) and birefringence (Δn = 0.054@ 546.1 nm) of BPBBF are confirmed by UV-vis-IR transmission and polarizing spectra, respectively. The discovery of this previous unreported SBBO-type material, BPBBF, along with other reported analogues such as BaMBe₂(BO₃)₂F₂ (M = Ca, Mg, and Cd), provide a prodigious example for tuning the bandgap, birefringence, and short UV absorption edge via simple chemical substitution.

The importance of tetrel bonding interactions with carbon in two arrestive iso-structural Cd(ii)-Salen coordination complexes: a comprehensive DFT overview in crystal engineering

In this article, we describe the serendipitous synthesis of two remarkable iso-structural Cd(ii)-Salen complexes [L₂Cd₄(OAc)₂(NCS)₂] in the presence of H₂L and NaSCN {where L = L¹ (N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diaminopropane) and L = L² (N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-ethylenediamine) in 1 and 2, respectively}. The complexes were characterized by using elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, PXRD, spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The X-ray crystal structure revealed that both complexes crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbcn, with unit cell parameters: a = 20.758(6), b = 11.022(3), c = 21.396(6) Å, V = 4895(2) ų, and Z = 4. The inner N₂O₂ and outer O₄ compartments are essentially occupied by two different Cd(ii) metal ions resulting from the de-protonated form of the ligand (L^2-) with the Cd(1) metal ions adopting a capped octahedral geometry. At the same time, Cd(2) assumes a distorted trigonal prismatic geometry. The solid-state crystal structure involves various non-covalent supramolecular interactions delineated by Hirshfeld Surface and 2D fingerprint plot analysis. Noteworthily, interesting S⋯H, O⋯H, and N⋯H contacts were observed, which have identical percentages in both complexes. The sparse tetrel bonding interactions in the complex, involving the CH₃ group, were evaluated in a new dimension of DFT. We observed this privileged bonding landscape that leads to the formation of self-assembled dimers in the crystal complexes. DFT-based MEP, RDG surface, NBO, and QTAIM/NCI plot investigation quantified such unique tetrel bonding interactions.

Chemical approaches for electronic doping in photovoltaic materials beyond crystalline silicon

Electronic doping is applied to tailor the electrical and optoelectronic properties of semiconductors, which have been widely adopted in information and clean energy technologies, like integrated circuit fabrication and PVs. Though this concept has prevailed in conventional PVs, it has achieved limited success in the new-generation PV materials, particularly in halide perovskites, owing to their soft lattice nature and self-compensation by intrinsic defects. In this review, we summarize the evolution of the theoretical understanding and strategies of electronic doping from Si-based photovoltaics to thin-film technologies, e.g., GaAs, CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)Se₂, and also cover the emerging PVs including halide perovskites and organic solar cells. We focus on the chemical approaches to electronic doping, emphasizing various chemical interactions/bonding throughout materials synthesis/modification to device fabrication/operation. Furthermore, we propose new classifications and models of electronic doping based on the physical and chemical properties of dopants, in the context of solid-state chemistry, which inspires further development of optoelectronics based on perovskites and other hybrid materials. Finally, we outline the effects of electronic doping in semiconducting materials and highlight the challenges that need to be overcome for reliable and controllable doping.

PbBi(SeO3)2F and Pb2Bi(SeO3)2Cl3: Coexistence of Three Kinds of Stereochemically Active Lone-Pair Cations Exhibiting Excellent Nonlinear Optical Properties

Stereochemically active lone-pair (SCALP) cations are one attractive type of nonlinear optical (NLO)-active units because of their large microcosmic polarizability and anisotropy. Currently, the single and/or dual lone-pair cation-based noncentrosymmetric (NCS) oxides have been extensively investigated and verified to be one class of outstanding NLO materials. From the perspective of function optimization, the integration of three kinds of SCALP cations into one crystal may synergistically improve the NLO properties, which is greatly expected but unexplored to date. Herein, by introducing flexible metal halide bonds to guarantee the stereochemical activity and overcome the energetically favorable antiparallel arrangements of lone-pair cations, the first type of three lone-pair-cation (Pb2+, Bi3+, and Se4+)-coexisting NCS oxides PbBi(SeO3)2F (I) and Pb2Bi(SeO3)2Cl3 (II) was obtained. As expected, both compounds show outstanding NLO properties, such as the strong second-harmonic-generation signal (10.5× and 13.5 × KDP), large birefringence (0.103 and 0.186), relatively wide energy band gaps (3.75 and 3.45 eV), and good physicochemical stability. Theoretical calculations demonstrated the effect of three lone-pair-cation-based polyhedra and the halide anion on NLO properties.

New insights into the interactions between Pb(II) and fruit waste biosorbent

Fruit waste is a sustainable biosorbent for heavy metal removal from wastewater. Elucidation of adsorption mechanism is imperative for the process control and development of effective adsorbents. In this study, watermelon rind (WR) exhibited selective and efficient Pb(II) adsorption with a maximum uptake of 230.5 mg/g at pH 5.0. The WR-packed bed column showed high Pb(II) uptake and robust durability over 10 adsorption-desorption cycles with long breakthrough time of 8-13 h (89-144 bed volume), and 95% of sequestered Pb(II) was rapidly desorbed in 1-2 h by 0.05 M HCl. Spectroscopic characterization by FTIR and XPS identified hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, and ether groups as the binding sites for Pb(II) via the binding force of complexation. Physicochemical analysis showed that ion exchange with Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ accounted for 19% of Pb(II) adsorption by WR; electrostatic attraction and microprecipitation jointly contributed. Quantum chemistry simulation verified the interactions between Pb(II) and binding sites and revealed carboxyl was the preferential functional group. The findings corroborate the applicability of WR in scale-up Pb(II) removal/recovery from wastewater and elaborate the mechanisms of Pb(II) adsorption by the WR biosorbent. This also provides insights into the behavior of heavy metals in other liquid/solid interfaces.

Effect of Stability of Two-Dimensional (2D) Aminoethyl Methacrylate Perovskite Using Lead-Based Materials for Ammonia Gas Sensor Application

Changes in physical properties of (H2C=C(CH3)CO2CH2CH2NH3)2PbI2Cl2 and (H2C=C(CH3)CO2CH2CH2NH3)2Pb(NO3)2Cl2 (2D) perovskite materials from iodide-based (I-AMP) and nitrate-based (N-AMP) leads were investigated at different durations (days) for various storage conditions. UV-Vis spectra of both samples showed an absorption band of around λmax 420 nm due to the transition of n to π* of ethylene (C=C) and amine (NH2). XRD perovskite peaks could be observed at approximately 25.35° (I-AMP) and 23.1° (N-AMP). However, a major shift in I-AMP and dramatic changes in the crystallite size, FHWM and crystallinity percentage highlighted the instability of the iodide-based material. In contrast, N-AMP showed superior stability with 96.76% crystallinity even at D20 under the S condition. Both materials were exposed to ammonia (NH3) gas, and a new XRD peak of ammonium lead iodide (NH4PbI3) with a red-shifted perovskite peak (101) was observed for the case of I-AMP. Based on the FWHM, crystallite size, crystallinity and lattice strain analysis, it can be concluded N-AMP's stability was maintained even after a few days of exposure to the said gases. These novel nitrate-based lead perovskite materials exhibited great potential for stable perovskite 2D materials and recorded less toxicity compared to famous lead iodide (PbI2) material.

Synthesis, spectroscopic findings and crystal engineering of Pb(ii)-Salen coordination polymers, and supramolecular architectures engineered by σ-hole/spodium/tetrel bonds: a combined experimental and theoretical investigation

Spontaneous self-assembly is one of the available synthetic routes to achieve structurally versatile and unique crystal complexes with selected metal-ligand combinations in the spirit of pseudohalides. In this endeavour, we designed a novel 1D coordination polymer (CP), [(Cd)(Pb)(L)(η¹-NCS)(η¹-SCN)] _n (1), using a compartmental Salen ligand (H₃L) in the presence of NaSCN. The characterization of the CP was accomplished using several spectroscopic techniques: MALDI-TOF, PXRD, SEM, EDX mapping, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The CP crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c with Z = 4. SCXRD reveals Cd(ii) and Pb(ii) metal ions fulfilled distorted square pyramidal and hemi-directed coordination spheres. Cd(ii) is placed in the inner N₂O₂ and heavier Pb(ii) in the outer O₄ compartments of the de-protonated form of the ligand [L]^2-. Supramolecular interactions in the intricate crystal structure produced attractive molecular architectures of the compound. The flexible aliphatic -OH pendent group coordinates with the Pb(ii) ions. This unique binding further elevates the supramolecular crystal topographies. The supramolecular interactions were authenticated by Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA). The observation of the recurring unconventional tetrel bonds was rationalized by DFT calculations and surface plots of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP). In the 1D polymeric chain in the complex, the O-atom of the -OH groups shows a tetrel bonding interaction with the Pb atom. We have found that the combination of QTAIM/NCI and QTAIM/ELF plots helps reveal the nature of these contacts. Moreover, the QTAIM/ELF plot determines the donor-acceptor interaction between the O-atom and the Pb atom, establishing the σ-hole. Agreeably, the σ-hole interaction also helps Pb(ii) serve as a Lewis acid in the complex. Finally, spodium and tetrel bonds are formed, possible thanks to a hemi-directional coordination sphere of the Pb atoms in the polymer described.

Lead Tellurite Crystals BaPbTe2O6 and PbVTeO5F with Large Nonlinear-/Linear-Optical Responses due to Active Lone Pairs and Distorted Octahedra

The exploration of nonlinear-/linear-optical crystal materials with high performance is an extremely difficult research project. Herein, the two new lead tellurite crystals BaPbTe₂O₆ and PbVTeO₅F were successfully obtained through a facile hydrothermal synthesis strategy. BaPbTe₂O₆ lies in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and chiral orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2₁, featuring a unique _∞¹[PbTe₂O₆] chain consisting of the PbO₄ and TeO₃ building units, while PbVTeO₅F belonging to the centrosymmetric (CS) orthorhombic space group Pbca manifests a 2D layer made up of _∞¹[PbO₄F₂] chains and novel [V₂Te₂O₁₀F₂] clusters. Further, a systematic analysis of lead tellurites finds that the coordination geometries of the Pb atom exert a considerable influence on the connection modes of Pb-O and Te-O building units. BaPbTe₂O₆ shows a great second-harmonic-generation (SHG) effect of ∼5× the benchmark KH₂PO₄ (KDP) and a large optical birefringence of 0.086 at 590 ± 3 nm. PbVTeO₅F demonstrates a remarkably larger birefringence of 0.142 at 590 ± 3 nm, benefiting from the introduction of the VO₅F octahedral unit. Theoretical studies reveal that the large SHG and birefringence in BaPbTe₂O₆ can be attributed to TeO₃ and PbO₄ polyhedra with active lone pairs, while the remarkably enlarged birefringence in PbVTeO₅F is attributable to the highly distorted octahedral VO₅F. The functional orientations of active building units may offer a practical insight into the design of the desired optical functional materials.

Synthesis, crystal structures and reversible solid-state crystal-to-crystal transformation of three isostructural lead(ii) halide coordination polymers with different luminescence properties in bulk and nanoscale

Novel isostructural lead(ii) halide CPs have been synthesized in bulk and nanoscale. The compounds exhibited reversible solid-state CTC transformations under mechanochemical reactions. The CPs displayed different thermal and fluorescence properties.

On the Quantum Chemical Nature of Lead(II) “Lone Pair”

We study the quantum chemical nature of the Lead(II) valence basins, sometimes called the lead “lone pair”. Using various chemical interpretation tools, such as molecular orbital analysis, natural bond orbitals (NBO), natural population analysis (NPA) and electron localization function (ELF) topological analysis, we study a variety of Lead(II) complexes. A careful analysis of the results shows that the optimal structures of the lead complexes are only governed by the 6s and 6p subshells, whereas no involvement of the 5d orbitals is found. Similarly, we do not find any significant contribution of the 6d. Therefore, the Pb(II) complexation with its ligand can be explained through the interaction of the 6s² electrons and the accepting 6p orbitals. We detail the potential structural and dynamical consequences of such electronic structure organization of the Pb (II) valence domain.

Role of fluorine on the structure and second-harmonic-generation property of inorganic selenites and tellurites

Fluorine, as the most electronegative element, can replace the oxygen ligands of functional groups under given conditions. These fluoride groups are more or less different from the pure oxide groups in composition, symmetry, polarizability, transmittancy, etc. The rational use of these differences is expected to improve the probability of noncentrosymmetric structures and the comprehensive performance of second-harmonic-generation (SHG) materials. In this feature article, we introduce the recent developments in fluoride selenite and tellurite SHG materials together with highlighting our contributions, including Se(IV) and Te(IV) compounds with (i) d⁰ transition metal oxyfluoride octahedron, (ii) IIIA metal oxyfluoride octahedron, (iii) fluoride lone pair cation polyhedron, and (iv) other fluoride polyhedron. The future perspectives of fluoride selenite and tellurite SHG materials are also discussed.

s-p Mixing in Stereochemically Active Lone Pairs Drives the Formation of 1D Chains of Lead Bromide Square Pyramids

In lead(II) halide compounds including virtually all lead halide perovskites, the Pb²⁺ 6s lone pair results in distorted octahedra, in accordance with the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect, rather than generating hemihedral coordination polyhedra. Here, in contrast, we report the characterization of an organic-inorganic hybrid material consisting of one-dimensional edge-sharing chains of Pb-Br square pyramids, separated by [Mn(DMF)₆]²⁺ (DMF = dimethylformamide) octahedra. Molecular orbital analysis and density-functional theory calculations indicate that square pyramidal coordination about Pb²⁺ results from the occupancy of the empty ligand site by a Pb²⁺ lone pair that has both s and p orbital character rather than the exclusively 6s lone pair. These results demonstrate that a Pb²⁺ lone pair can be exploited to behave like a ligand in lead halide compounds, greatly expanding the realm of possible lead halide materials to include extended solids with nonoctahedral coordination environments.

Ψ-Polyhedral symbols for coordination geometries of lead(II) with a stereochemically active lone pair

Because an IUCr/IUPAC-designated set of letters/numbers identifies the configuration of the atoms linked to the Pb^II atom in its coordination compounds, a Ψ prefix before such as a polyhedral symbol provides useful information when its lone pair is stereochemically active. Such notation is especially relevant when the metal atom is connected to eight or more atoms regardless of whether the lone pair is active or inert. The polyhedral symbols for the crystal structures in some 50 articles published after 2000 are reported here as the original studies did not expressly identify coordination geometries.

A different approach: highly encapsulating macrocycles being used as organic tectons in the building of CPs

For the first time, the cross-bridged cyclam unit is used as an organic tecton to build coordination polymers.

Physicochemical Insight into Coordination Systems Obtained from Copper(II) Bromoacetate and 1,10-Phenanthroline

Two different coordination compounds of copper were synthesized from the same building blocks (1,10-phenanthroline, bromoacetate anions, and copper cations). The synthesis parameters were carefully designed and evaluated to allow the change of the resulting compounds molecular structure, i.e., formation of mononuclear (bromoacetato-O,O')(bromoacetato-O)aqua(1,10-phenanthroline-N,N')copper(II) and dinuclear (μ-bromido-1:2κ²)bis(μ-bromoacetato-1κO,2κO')bis(1,10-phenanthroline-N,N')dicopper(II) bromoacetate bromoacetic acid solvate. The crystal, molecular and supramolecular structures of the studied compounds were determined and evaluated in Hirshfeld analysis. The UV-Vis-IR absorption and thermal properties were studied and discussed. For the explicit determination of the influence of compounds structure on radiation absorption in UV-Vis range, density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations were performed.

Two-step adsorption model for Pb ion accumulation at the algae-water interface in the presence of fulvic acid

The effects of fulvic acid (FA) on heavy metal bioaccumulation by algae have been extensively studied, but the quantitative description on its adsorption behavior is not elaborately illustrated. In the study, the two-step adsorption model is firstly proposed to describe the adsorption of Pb by algae in the presence of FA (R² > 0.984), which is characterized with two-plateaus in the biosorption curves. The first plateau in the curve represents a monolayer adsorption process of free Pb²⁺; while the second reveals a multilayer adsorption process of Pb-FA binding to those adsorbed Pb by algae, and the bonding material was called as ternary complex of algae-Pb-(FA-Pb). The formation of the ternary complex caused a sharp increase of the amount of adsorbed Pb by algae which was measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and a decrease of the toxicity of Pb to algae verified with SEM and TEM images. The ternary phase diagram showed FA could participate in the formation of ternary complexes at very low concentration. The study is important for a comprehensive understanding of the metal-microalgae interaction and its biogeochemical cycle in surface waters.

Harnessing Peptides against lead pollution and poisoning: Achievements and prospects

Among the broad applicability of peptides in numerous aspects of life and technologies, their interactions with lead (Pb), one of the most harmful substances to the environment and health, are constantly explored. So far, peptides were developed for environmental remediation of Pb-contaminations by various strategies such as hydrogelation and surface display. They were also designed for Pb detection and sensing by electrochemical and fluorescent methods and for modeling natural proteins that involve in mechanisms by which Pb is toxic. This review aims at summarizing selected examples of these applications, manifesting the enormous potential of peptides in the combat against Pb pollution. Nevertheless, the absence of new medicinal treatments against Pb poisoning that are based on peptides is noticeable. An overview of previous achievements utilizing Pb-peptide interactions towards various goals is presented and can be therefore leveraged to construct a useful toolbox for the design of smart peptides as next-generation therapeutics against Pb.

An insight into the non-covalent Pb⋯S and S⋯S interactions in the solid-state structure of a hemidirected lead(ii) complex

A hemi-directed copper(ii)/lead(ii) complex has been synthesized and characterized. The energy of chalcogen–chalcogen and tetrel bonding interactions in this complex was analyzed by DFT calculations.

Supramolecular lead(ii) architectures engineered by tetrel bonds

The structures, including tetrel bonding, of Pb^II coordination compounds assembled from N′-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)picolinohydrazide, N′-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)nicotinohydrazide and N′-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)isonicotinohydrazide ligands are discussed.

Achievement of intrinsic white light emission by hybridization-deformable haloplumbates with rigid luminescent naphthalene motifs

The combination of red emissions stemming from deformable haloplumbates and blue emissions originating from luminescent naphthalene motifs give rise to intrinsic single-component white-light emitters.

Comprehensively understanding the steric hindrance effect on the coordination sphere of Pb2+ ions and photophysical nature of two luminescent Pb(ii)-coordination polymers

New luminescent Pb(ii)-coordination polymers (Pb(ii)-CPs), [Pb(2-anc)₂]_n (1) and [Pb(3-qlc)₂(H₂O)₂]_n (2) (2-anc = 2-aminonicotinate, 3-qlc = 3-quinolinecarboxylate), were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction and characterized using microanalysis, IR spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structure analysis revealed that the Pb²⁺ ion displays a hemi-directed coordination geometry in 1 and a holo-directed coordination geometry in 2. The difference between the coordination spheres of 1 and 2 is related to the steric hindrance effect of the ligands. A two-dimensional (2D) corrugated layer structure is formed in 1, and the neighboring layers are further extended into a three-dimensional (3D) van der Waals crystal by ππ interactions between the pyridyl rings in the neighboring layers. In contrast, a one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymeric chain is formed in 2, and the adjacent chains are connected in a 2D network by hydrogen bonds. The photophysical properties of 1 and 2 were studied at ambient conditions, disclosing that 1 emits phosphorescence at 548 nm with a millisecond-scale emission lifetime and an absolute quantum yield of 2.2%; 2 emits only blue fluorescence with an absolute quantum yield of 3.5% and nanosecond-scale emission lifetime. The reasons for the difference in the photophysical nature of 1 and 2 are discussed in regards to the electron band structure and density of states analysis.

[Ln6O8] Cluster-Encapsulating Polyplumbites as New Polyoxometalate Members and Record Inorganic Anion-Exchange Materials for ReO4 - Sequestration

Various types of polyoxometalates (POMs) have been synthesized since the 19th century, but their assortment has been mostly limited to Groups 5 and 6 metals. Herein, a new family of POMs composed of a carbon group element as the addenda atoms with two distinct phases, LnPbOClO4-1 (Ln = Sm to Ho, Y) and LnPbOClO4-2 (Ln = Er and Tm) is reported. Both structures are built from [Ln6O8] rare-earth metal hexamers being incorporated in [Pb18O32]/[Pb12O24] polyplumbites, and unbound perchlorates as charge-balancing anions. Impressively, YPbOClO4-1 and ErPbOClO4-2 exhibit exceptional uptake capacities (434.7 and 427.7 mg g-1) toward ReO4 -, a chemical surrogate for the key radioactive fission product in the nuclear fuel cycle 99TcO4 -, which are the highest values among all inorganic anion-exchange materials reported until now. The sorption mechanism is clearly elucidated and visualized by single-crystal-to-single-crystal structural transformation from ErPbOClO4-2 to a perrhenate-containing complex ErPbOReO4 , revealing a unique ReO4 - uptake selectivity driven by specific interaction within Pb···O-ReO3 - bonds.

Natural organic matter-cations complexation and its impact on water treatment: A critical review

The quality and quantity of natural organic matter (NOM) has been observed to evolve which poses challenges to water treatment facilities. Even though NOM may not be toxic itself, its presence in water has aesthetic effects, enhances biological growth in distribution networks, binds with pollutants and controls the bioavailability of trace metals. Even though NOM has heterogeneous functional groups, the predominant ones are the carboxyl and the phenolic groups, which have high affinities for metals depending on the pH. The properties of both the NOM and the trace elements influence the binding kinetics and preferences. Ca²⁺ prefers to bind with the carboxylic groups especially at a low pH while Zn²⁺ prefers the amine groups though practically, most cations bind to several functions groups. The nature of the chemical environment (neighboring ligands) the ligand finds itself equally influences its preference for a cation. The presence of NOM, cations or a complex of NOM-cations may have significant impact on the efficiency of water processes such as coagulation, adsorption, ion exchange resin and membrane filtration. In coagulation, the complexation between the coagulant salts and NOM helps to remove NOM from solution. This positive influence can further be enhanced by the addition of Ca²⁺. A negative influence is however, observed in lime-softening method as NOM complexes with Ca²⁺. A negative influence is also seen in membrane filtration where divalent cations partially neutralize the carboxyl functional groups of NOM thereby reducing the repulsion effect on NOM and increasing membrane fouling. The formation of disinfection by-products could either be increased or reduced during chlorination, the speciation of products formed is modified with generally the enhancement of haloacetic acid formation observed in presence of metal cations. This current work, presents in details the interactions of cations and NOM in the environment, the preference of cations for each functional group and the possible competition between cations for binding sites, as well as the possible impacts of the presence of cations, NOM, or their complex on water treatment processes.

2D-Coordination polymer containing lead(II) in a hemidirected PbO4S3 environment formed by molecular breaking of the 1,3-oxathiolane ligand

A new 1,3-oxathiolane-based ligand, 2-(1,3-oxathiolan-2-yl)pyridine, was prepared and its coordination to lead(II) was investigated. Experiments revealed a ligand-breaking reaction during the complexation process, which leads to the formation of a 2D-coordination polymer of lead(II), [Pb(μ 3-HME)(μ-OAc)] n ; H2ME: 2-mercaptoethanol. The compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray analysis revealed a 2D-coordination polymer extending via acetato bridges. The lead(II) center adopts a rare PbO4S3-distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry with a hemidirected arrangement. Upon coordination, the thiol group of the H2ME ligand is deprotonated to coordinate as an anionic ligand. The network extends in sheets in the crystallographic ab plane via Pb–S–Pb and Pb–O–Pb bridges, aided by O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Spectral, structural and theoretical study of the effects of thiocyanato and dicyanamido ligands on the geometry of PbII complexes containing a triazinic ligand

Two lead(II) complexes of 5,6-bis(furan-2-yl)-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazine (DFPT), namely one-dimensional (1D) catena-poly[[bis[5,6-bis(furan-2-yl)-3-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)-1,2,4-triazine-κN²]lead(II)]-di-μ-thiocyanato-κ²N:S;κ²S:N], [Pb(NCS)₂(C₁₆H₁₀N₄O₂)₂]_n, 1, and binuclear di-μ-dicyanamido-κ²N¹:N⁵;κ²N⁵:N¹-bis{[5,6-bis(furan-2-yl)-3-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)-1,2,4-triazine-κN²](nitrato-κ²O,O')lead(II)}, [Pb₂(C₂N₃)₂(NO₃)₂(C₁₆H₁₀N₄O₂)₄], 2, as well as DFPT itself, were prepared and identified by elemental analysis, FT-IR, ¹H NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structural analyses. In the double-chain 1D coordination polymer of 1 and the binuclear structure of 2, the Pb atom has a hemidirected-PbN₆S₂ and a rare holodirected-PbN₆O₂ environment, respectively, with a distorted cubic geometry. All the coordination modes of dicyanamide ligands within lead complexes were studied using the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) to compare them with the structures of 1 and 2. In addition to hydrogen bonds, the crystal networks are stabilized by π-π stacking interactions between the triazine, furyl and pyridine aromatic rings. The most stable theoretical structures of the title compounds predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations were compared with the solid-state results.

Supramolecular Assemblies in Pb(II) Complexes with Hydrazido-Based Ligands

Herein, we describe the synthesis and single crystal X-ray diffraction characterization of several Pb(II) complexes using Schiff base hydrazido-based ligands and different counterions (NO3−, I– and ClO4). In the three complexes reported in this work, the lead(II) metal exhibits a high coordination number (n > 8) and thus it is apparently not involved in tetrel bonding interactions. Moreover, the aromatic ligands participate in noncovalent interactions that play an important role in the formation of several supramolecular assemblies in the solid state of the three Pb(II) complexes. These assemblies have been analyzed by means of Hirshfeld surface analysis and DFT calculations.
