Abstract
Chirality analysis of small molecules for the determination of their enantiopurity is nowadays ruled by streamlined chromatographic methods which utilize chiral stationary phases. Chiroptical probes which rely on host-guest interactions are so far overshadowed by the latter but have the benefit of depending only on common spectroscopic techniques such as CD spectroscopy to distinguish enantiomers and to quantify their ratio. Interest into this receptor-based approach is constantly rising because non-invasive high-throughput screenings with a minimal waste production can be performed. In this study we investigate the possibility to utilize metal-based containers in form of charge-neutral helicates able to recognize anions for this purpose. Key building block of the helicates are triazole units which show rotational freedom and give rise to either a meso-structure or a racemic mixture of the right- and left-handed complex. A chiroptical response of the probe is observed upon recognition of chiral mono- or dicarboxylates and chirality analysis of tartrate is conducted by CD spectroscopy.

Abstract
Enantiorecognition and resolution are of essential importance in many diverse areas of science. Whenever there arises a need to analyze/investigate enantiomers in different situations chromatography stands up in our minds immediately. Nevertheless, chemoselective and enantioselective recognition/discrimination (without going for separation) constitutes a different perception and requirement. The techniques using chiroptical sensing cause detection based on molecular interactions induced in different manners. Enantioselective sensing of monosaccharides in γ-cyclodextrin assembly and by diboronic acid based fluorescent sensors, application of bi-naphthol and H8 BINOL based sensors and dendrimers, metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions in CD, exciton-coupled circular dichroism, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and enantioselective indicator displacement sensor arrays for enantioselective recognition/detection of chiral organic compounds, such as amines, amino acids/alcohols, and hydroxycarboxylic acids have been discussed in progressive manner with mechanistic explanations, wherever available. Besides, the chiroptical vs LC approach has been discussed. The present paper is focused on certain different non-chromatographic optical techniques and aims to extend an understanding and a view to consider such techniques which have been successful in selective detection, and determination of absolute configuration and enantiomeric excess, (without resorting to separation vis-à-vis LC) and that have potential use in high-throughput chiral assay and combinatorial search for asymmetric catalysts and reagents.

Abstract
Studies on various macrocyclic arenes have received increasing attention due to their straightforward syntheses, convenient derivatization, and unique complexation properties. Represented by pillar[n]arenes, several distinctive macrocyclic arenes have recently emerged with the following characteristics: they possess a pair of enantiomeric planar chiral conformations, and interconversion between these enantiomeric conformations can be achieved through the flipping of ring units. Complexation of a chiral guest with these macrocyclic arenes will lead to a shift of the equilibrium between the Rp and Sp conformers, leading to intriguing possibilities for chiral induction and sensing. By the introduction of bulky substituents on the rims, employing rotaxanation or pseudocatenation, planar chirality could be locked, enabling the enantiomeric separation of the chiral structures. The induced or separated chiral conformers/compounds exhibit significant chiroptical properties. These macrocyclic arenes, with flipping-induced inversion of planar chirality, demonstrated intriguing chiral induction dynamics and kinetics. In this featured review, we systematically summarize the progress in chiroptical induction/regulation of these macrocyclic arenes, particularly in the fields of chiral sensing, molecular machines, molecular recognition, and assembly.

Abstract
The manipulation of chirality in molecular entities that rapidly interconvert between enantiomeric forms is challenging, particularly at the supramolecular level. Advances in controlling such dynamic stereochemical systems offer opportunities to understand chiral symmetry breaking and homochirality. Herein, we report the synthesis of a face-rotating tetrahedron (FRT), an organic molecular cage composed of tridurylborane facial units that undergo stereomutations between enantiomeric trefoil propeller-like conformations. After resolution, we show that the racemization barrier of the enantiopure FRT can be regulated in situ through the reversible binding of fluoride anions onto the tridurylborane moieties. Furthermore, the addition of an enantiopure phenylethanol to the FRT can effectively induce chirality of the molecular cage by preferentially binding to one of its enantiomeric conformers. This study presents a new paradigm for controlling dynamic chirality in supramolecular systems, which may have implications for asymmetric synthesis and dynamic stereochemistry.

Abstract
Atropisomeric scaffolds are a common design element found in pharmaceuticals, many deriving from an N-C axis of chirality. The handedness associated with atropisomeric drugs is oftentimes crucial for their efficacy and/or safety. With the increased use of high-throughput screening (HTS) for drug discovery, the need for rapid enantiomeric excess (ee) analysis is needed to keep up with the fast workflow. Here, we describe a circular dichroism (CD) based assay that could be applied to the ee determination of N-C axially chiral triazole derivatives. Analytical samples for CD were prepared from crude mixtures by three sequential steps: liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), a wash-elute, and complexation with Cu(ii) triflate. The initial ee measurement of five samples of atropisomer 2 was conducted by the use of a CD spectropolarimeter with a 6-position cell changer, resulting in errors of less than 1% ee. High-throughput ee determination was performed on a CD plate reader using a 96-well plate. A total of 28 atropisomeric samples (14 for 2 and 14 for 3) were screened for ee. The CD readings were completed in 60 seconds with average absolute errors of ±7.2% and 5.7% ee for 2 and 3, respectively.

Abstract
Recently, there has been significant interest in the use of chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs) for photonics applications. The promise of these materials lies in the ability to tune their properties through judicious selection of the metal and ligand components. Additionally, the interaction of guest species with the host framework can be exploited to realise new functionalities. In this review, we outline the methods for synthesising chiral MOFs and CPs, then analyse the recent innovations in their use for various optical and photonics applications. We focus on two emerging directions in the field of MOF chemistry - circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) and chiroptical switching - as well as the latest developments in the use of these materials for second-order nonlinear optics (NLO), particularly second-harmonic generation (SHG). The current challenges encountered so far, their possible solutions, and key directions for further research are also outlined. Overall, given the results demonstrated to date, chiral MOFs and CPs show great promise for use in future technologies such as optical communication and computing, optical displays, and all-optical devices.

Abstract
Chiral trifluoromethyl alcohol groups were introduced at the hindered ortho positions of 9,10-diphenylanthracenes to investigate their effects on the physical properties and reactivity towards oxidative dearomatization. In such compact structures, the position in different quadrants and the preferred orientation of the -CH(OH)CF3 groups were determined by the relative and absolute configurations of each stereoisomer, respectively. As a consequence, the stereochemistry governs the organization of the H-bonded molecules in single crystals (homochiral dimers vs ribbon), whereas in chlorinated solvents, they all behave as discrete compounds. Concerning their reactivity, the stereospecific dearomative oxidation of these molecules leads to 9,10-bis-spiro-isobenzofuran-anthracenes, when using organic single-electron transfer oxidants. The chiroptical properties of the alcohols and the corresponding dearomatized products were compared and showed an important modulation of the intensity.

Abstract
Molecules that change shape in response to environmental conditions are central to biological molecular communication devices and their synthetic chemical analogues. Here we report a molecular system in which a series of chiral anionic ligands of differing basicity are selectively protonated according to the pH of the medium. A cationic circular dichroism (CD) reporter complex responds to anion binding by selecting one of two alternative enantiomeric conformations. Exploiting the principle that less basic anions have, in general, weaker electrostatic interactions than more basic anions, a set of three chiral acids with large (>5 unit) pKa differences and differing configurations were sequentially deprotonated in acetonitrile by addition of base, allowing the most basic anion in the mixture at any time to bind to the reporter complex. A characteristic CD output resulted, which changed in sign as the next-most basic anion was revealed by the next deprotonation in the series. Four cycles of switching between three ligand-bound states were achieved with minimal changes in signal magnitude, by alternating addition of base and acid. The pH-dependent conformational response was used to transduce a signal by appending to the binding site a 2-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) oligomer, whose M or P helical conformation depended on the chirality of the bound ligand, and was reported by a remote 13C-labelled NMR reporter group. The multicomponent system thus converts a pH signal into a programmable conformational response which induces a remote spectroscopic effect. A chemical system comprising a series of chiral acids of differing pKa, a metal, and a conformationally labile chromophore responds to pH with a CD spectrum that reports the absolute stereochemistry of the most basic anion in the mixture.![]()

Abstract
A chiral supramolecular assembly exhibiting redox-induced changes in its chiroptical properties was prepared using viologen-modified glutamide (G-V2+) derivatives. Achiral viologen moieties in the G-V2+ assembly were chirally orientated by glutamide groups, affording a unique orange-colored solution, with a visible absorption band at around 470 nm, having electronic circular dichroism (CD) signals (molar ellipticity [θ] = 0.58 × 105 deg cm2 dmol−1: absorption dissymmetry factors (g) = 5.2 × 10−3 at 512 nm). The G-V2+ could be reduced to its cation radical (G-V+˙) but retains its chiral assembly. After chemical reduction, the color change from orange to blueish violet, indicating an absorption band at approximately 560 nm, and the sign change of the CD signal from positive to negative ([θ] = −0.36 × 105 deg cm2 dmol−1; g = −2.9 × 10−3 at 580 nm) were observed in water. Subsequent oxidation re-introduces the G-V2+ chiroptical behavior before reduction. Chiral assemblies of viologen-modified glutamide derivatives exhibit a unique orange-color and CD signals by CT complexes of viologen groups and electro-responsive chiroptical switching behaviors in the visible region in water.![]()

Abstract
In the aqueous solution, l-CySS-OMe induced pS-WP5 from racemic WP5. Upon the addition of dithiothreitol as a reducing reagent to the above system, pS-WP5 was then converted to pR-WP5 for the reason that l-CySS-OMe was reduced to l-Cys-OMe. Followed by the addition of H2O2 as an oxidation reagent, pR-WP5 was converted back to pS-WP5. The chiral conformational transferring process between pR-WP5 and pS-WP5 can be easily and visually observed by reading the CD signal.

Abstract
Two imine based supramolecular cages are able to self-assemble in the presence of a complex mixture like wine or fruit juices. Taking advantage of templating agents present in these mixtures the systems are able to form and to selectively encapsulate dicarboxylic systems present in the mixtures. This capability has been exploited to develop molecular systems able to report the enantiomeric excess and composition of (a)chiral dicarboxylic acids in fruit juices and wines using 1H-NMR.

Abstract
Supramolecular chirogenesis is one of the most rudimentary topics in the interdisciplinary sciences and essentially deals with various natural processes and innovative modern technologies. A comprehensive and rigorous understanding of such phenomenon is necessary to have a clear insight into the fundamental mechanisms and the various controlling factors, which would eventually lead to a range of practical applications of chiral supramolecular science. Metalloporphyrin tweezers have been extensively employed for such chirogenic processes due to their exciting physicochemical and tunable spectral properties, large stabilities, easily available synthetic protocols, and excellent abilities to form molecular assemblies. During the last few decades, various metalloporphyrin tweezers have been developed and considerably utilized by several research groups for assigning the absolute configuration to a variety of chiral diamines, conjugates of primary and secondary amines, amino alcohols, secondary alcohols, α-chiral carboxylic acids, etc. Our group has been at the forefront in trying to establish the structure-property correlation in this important area of interdisciplinary research. A brief account of our systematic investigation for understanding the underpinning mechanism of chirality induction and control at the molecular level over the last few years is presented in this Perspective article. The comprehensive understanding of such mechanistic details will be helpful in understanding various natural processes and designing modern technologies for various chirogenic functions in the fields of molecular sensors, nanotechnology, and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
Harnessing the chiroptical properties of molecular Möbius rings is motivated by fundamental aspects while challenged by synthetic difficulties. Focusing on Möbius aromatic Zn(ii) hexaphyrin complexes, interconversion between two chiral states was achieved through binding and release of an amino ligand (forward/backward stimuli), leading to different chiroptical switching phenomena (amplification, on-off, inversion). The amine either supplies the chirality or behaves as an achiral effector regulating the Zn(ii)-binding of a second (chiral) carboxylato ligand. These results highlight the Möbius [28]hexaphyrin scaffold as an attractive chiral switchable unit.

Abstract
Easily producible sensors for harmful industrial waste compounds are of significant interest for both human health and the environment. Three novel coordination polymers, [Ag(μ-aca)(μ4-bztpy)1/2] (1), [Ag(μ-bza)(μ-bpa)] (2), and [Ag2(μ-aca)2(μ-bpa)2]·EtOH·2H2O (3), were assembled in this study by reactions using Ag+ as a node with the pyridyl ligand 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)benzene (bztpy) or 9,10-bis(4-pyridyl)anthracene (bpa) and an auxiliary chelating carboxylic ligand. Single-crystal X-ray structural analyses revealed that compound 1 has a 3D framework consisting of 1D [Ag(aca)]∞ chains and bztpy linkers, while 2 and 3 have 2D layered structures consisting of binuclear Ag-carboxylate units and bpa linkers, respectively. Topological studies revealed that 1 has a bbf topology, while 2 and 3 are 2D [4,4] rhombic grids. The compounds were further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and a luminescence study. The solids of 1-3 exhibited intense photoluminescent emission with λemmax at ca. 493, 472, and 500 nm, respectively. Remarkably, due to their excellent framework stability, 1 and 2 can act as multiresponsive luminescent sensors for nitrobenzene, Fe3+, and Cr2O72- with a high selectivity and sensitivity ascribed to their quenching effect.

Abstract
A new and simple strategy towards electric-field-driven multiple chirality switching device has been designed and fabricated by combining a newly synthesized base-responsive chiroptical polymer switch (R-FLMA) and p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Clear and stable triple chirality states (silence, positive, negative) of this device in visible band can be regulated reversibly (>1000 cycles) by adjusting voltage programs. Furthermore, such chiral switching phenomena are also accompanied by apparent changes of color and fluorescence. More importantly, the potential application of this device for a spatial light modulator has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
A photoresponsive diarylethene was incorporated in an achiral helical foldamer container. A carbohydrate guest was found to induce opposite handedness upon binding to the open and closed forms of the diarylethene-containing foldamer, thus enabling chiroptical switching of an achiral host mediated by a chiral guest.

Abstract
Complexation of the 8,8'-bis(methylsulfanyl) derivatives of cobalt and iron bis(dicarbollides) [8,8'-(MeS)2-3,3'-M(1,2-C2B9H10)2]- (M = Co, Fe) with copper, silver, palladium and rhodium leads to the formation of the corresponding chelate complexes, which is accompanied by a transition from the transoid to the cisoid conformation of the bis(dicarbollide) complex. This transition is reversible and can be used in design of coordination-driven molecular switches based on transition metal bis(dicarbollide) complexes. The solid-state structures of {(Ph3P)ClPd[8,8'- (MeS)2-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)2-κ2-S,S']} and {(COD)Rh[8,8'-(MeS)2-3,3'-Co(1,2-C2B9H10)2-κ2-S,S']} were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Three gold(i) tripodal complexes containing the tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) ligand coordinated to Au-PR3 moieties (PR3 = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo[3.3.1.13.7]decane, PTA (1), 3,7-diacetyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane, DAPTA (2) and triphenylphosphane (3)) were prepared together with a cage-like structure containing triphosphane 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane (4). The luminescence of these complexes has been studied and they show a red shift upon the formation of heterometallic complexes by reaction with Zn(NO3)2, CuCl and [Cu(CH3CN)4]BF4. The different coordination motifs of the Zn2+ and Cu+ heterometallic species and the resulting changes in the recorded absorption, emission and NMR spectra were analysed and supported by TD-DFT calculations.

A single crystal of an enantiopure EMUJ was successfully obtained, which allowed, for the first time, the definitive correlation between the absolute configuration and the circular dichroism spectrum of a P[6] derivative to be determined. The self-inclusion and self-exclusion conformational change of the EMUJ led to a chiroptical inversion of the P[6] moiety, which could be manipulated by both solvents and changes in temperature. The EMUJ also displayed a unique redox-triggered reversible in/out conformational switching, corresponding to an occupation/voidance switching of the P[6] cavity, respectively. This phenomenon is an unprecedented electrochemical manipulation of the capture and release of guest molecules by supramolecular hosts.

Abstract
The synthesis of several rigid, homochiral organic macrocycles possessing, respectively, average molecular D2 and D3 symmetries, is described. They have been obtained from aromatic dicarboxylic acids, in combination with an axially-chiral, suitable dibenzylic alcohol, derived from 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diol (BINOL) using one-pot esterification reactions in good isolated yields. NMR and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies detect the structural and shape variability in the scaffolds, reflected both in terms of the changes in chemical shifts and the shape of selected proton resonances, and in terms of the variation of the CD signature related to the dihedral angle defined by the binaphthyl units embedded in the rigid cyclic skeleton. The D2 cyclic adducts are able to form stable complexes with aromatic diphenols, with binding strengths that are dependent on small variations in the spacing units, and therefore on the shapes of the internal cavities of the cyclic structures.

Abstract
A series of coordination compounds of redox-active 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine with CoII bis-diketonates and FeII dihydrobis(pyrazolyl)borates has been computationally designed by means of density functional theory (DFT UB3LYP*/6-311++G(d,p)) calculations of their electronic structure, energy characteristics, and magnetic properties. Four types of complexes differing by the nature and position of the terminal metal-centered fragments have been considered. The performed systematic calculations have revealed the systems capable of undergoing thermally initiated spin-state switching rearrangements, including those governed by the synchronized mechanisms of spin crossover and valence tautomerism. The predicted magnetic characteristics allow one to consider the dinuclear cobalt complexes and heterometallic Co/Fe compounds with 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine as building blocks for molecular and quantum electronics devices. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
A unique example of a ring-to-cage structural conversion in a multinuclear gold(I) coordination system with d-penicillamine (d-H2 pen) is reported. The reaction of [Au2 Cl2 (dppe)] (dppe=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) with d-H2 pen in a 1:1 ratio gave [Au4 (dppe)2 (d-pen)2 ] ([1]), in which two [Au2 (dppe)]2+ units are linked by two d-pen S atoms in a cyclic form so as to have two bidentate-N,O coordination arms. The subsequent reaction of [1] with Cu(OTf)2 afforded [Au4 Cu(dppe)2 (d-pen)2 ]2+ ([2]2+ ), in which a CuII ion is chelated by the two coordination arms in [1] to form an AuI4 CuII bicyclic metallocage. A similar reaction using Cu(NO3 )2 was accompanied by the ring expansion of [1] to [Au8 (dppe)4 (d-pen)4 ], leading to the production of [Au8 Cu2 (dppe)4 (d-pen)4 ]4+ ([3]4+ ). In [3]4+ , two CuII ions are each chelated by the two coordination arms to form an AuI8 CuII2 tricyclic metallocage, accommodating a nitrate ion. The use of Ni(NO3 )2 or Ni(OAc)2 instead of Cu(NO3 )2 commonly gave a tricyclic metallocage of [Au8 Ni2 (dppe)4 (d-pen)4 ]4+ ([4]4+ ), but a water molecule was accommodated inside the AuI8 NiII2 metallocage.
