Vanadium complexes: Recent progress in oxidation catalysis

Nonoxidovanadium(IV) Complex-Catalyzed Synthesis of 2-Amino-3-cyano-4H-pyrans/4H-chromenes, Biscoumarins, and Xanthenes under Green Conditions

Reaction of [VIVO(acac)2] (Hacac = acetylacetone) with a Mannich base, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butyl benzyl)-1,2-diaminoethane (H4L, I) in a 1:1 molar ratio in MeOH, leads to the formation of the nonoxidovanadium(IV) complex [VIVL] (1). Air stable complex 1 has been characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, DFT calculations, and single-crystal X-ray studies. 1 adopts distorted octahedral geometry where ligand coordinates through all coordination functionalities available. This complex has been used as a catalyst in the one-pot, three-component synthesis of 2-amino-3-cyano-4H-pyrans using 1,3-dicarbonyls (1,3-cyclohexanedione, dimedone, barbituric acid, and 4-hydroxycoumarin), malononitrile, and various substituted aromatic aldehydes in equimolar amounts employing ethanol as a green solvent. The catalytic reaction revealed that the multicomponent synthesis of 4H-pyrans and chromenes is greatly influenced by both types of 1,3-dicarbonyl compound employed and the nature of the substituent on the aromatic ring of the aldehyde. Synthesized catalyst has also been used in the synthesis of pharmacologically relevant oxygen-containing heterocycles, specifically, 1,8-dioxo-octahydro-1H-xanthenes and biscoumarins. The possible mechanism for the synthesized one-pot, multicomponent product has been proposed by isolating intermediate(s) generated during synthesis.

Decreasing the Bond Order between Vanadium and Oxo Ligand to Form 3d Schrock Carbynes

Preserving vanadium in a high oxidation state during chemical transformations can be challenging due to the oxidizing nature of V(+5) species. Oxo and similar isoelectronic ligands have been utilized to stabilize V(+5) by extensive π-donation. However, decreasing the bond order between V and the oxo ligand often results in a reduction of the metal center. Herein, we report a unique transformation involving anionic V(+5) alkylidene that converts a V(+5) oxo complex to a V(+5) alkylidyne in three steps without altering the oxidation state of the metal center. This method has been used to obtain rare 3d Schrock carbynes, which provide easy and scalable access to V(+5) alkylidynes.

The Synthesis of Sponge-like V2O5/CNT Hybrid Nanostructures Using Vertically Aligned CNTs as Templates

The fabrication of sponge-like vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanostructures using vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) as a template is presented. The VACNTs were grown on silicon substrates by chemical vapor deposition using the Fe/Al bilayer catalyst approach. The V2O5 nanostructures were obtained from the thermal oxidation of metallic vanadium deposited on the VACNTs. Different oxidation temperatures and vanadium thicknesses were used to study the influence of these parameters on the stability of the carbon template and the formation of the V2O5 nanostructures. The morphology of the samples was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and the structural characterization was performed by Raman, energy-dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. Due to the catalytic properties of V2O5 in the decomposition of carbonaceous materials, it was possible to obtain supported sponge-like structures based on V2O5/CNT composites, in which the CNTs exhibit an increase in their graphitization. The VACNTs can be removed or preserved by modulating the thermal oxidation process and the vanadium thickness.

Vanadium-catalyzed Hydration of 2-Cyanopyrazine to Pyrazinamide with Unique Substrate Specificity

Pyrazinamide is an important medicine used for the treatment of tuberculosis(TB). The preparation of pyrazinamide via catalytic hydration of 2-cyanopyrazine is of great economic interest with high atomic economy. Heterogeneous non-precious transition metal-catalyzed hydration of nitriles under neutral reaction conditions would be rather attractive. Herein vanadium-nitrogen-carbon materials were fabricated and employed for selective hydration of nitriles using water as both the solvent and reactant. 2-Cyanopyrazine could be smoothly converted into to pyrazinamide with unique substrate specificity. Additives with different N and O atoms could significantly affect hydration of 2-cyanopyrazine due to competitive adsorption/coordination in the reaction system. This work provides a new approach for non-precious metal catalyzed hydration of nitriles.

Vanadium-catalysed regioselective hydroboration of epoxides for synthesis of secondary alcohols

Regioselective epoxide ring-opening through hydroboration catalysed by a vanadium(III) dialkyl complex supported by a redox-active terpyridine ligand is reported. Secondary alcohols were obtained in high yields via effective Markovnikov hydroboration of terminal epoxides, showcasing a new catalytic application of an earth-abundant vanadium(III) complex.

Systematic Development of Vanadium Catalysts for Sustainable Epoxidation of Small Alkenes and Allylic Alcohols

The catalytic epoxidation of small alkenes and allylic alcohols includes a wide range of valuable chemical applications, with many works describing vanadium complexes as suitable catalysts towards sustainable process chemistry. But, given the complexity of these mechanisms, it is not always easy to sort out efficient examples for streamlining sustainable processes and tuning product optimization. In this review, we provide an update on major works of tunable vanadium-catalyzed epoxidations, with a focus on sustainable optimization routes. After presenting the current mechanistic view on vanadium catalysts for small alkenes and allylic alcohols' epoxidation, we argue the key challenges in green process development by highlighting the value of updated kinetic and mechanistic studies, along with essential computational studies.

Charge and Solvent Effects on the Redox Behavior of Vanadyl Salen-Crown Complexes

The incorporation of charged groups proximal to a redox active transition metal center can impact the local electric field, altering redox behavior and enhancing catalysis. Vanadyl salen (salen = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneaminato)) complexes functionalized with a crown ether containing a nonredox active metal cation (V-Na, V-K, V-Ba, V-La, V-Ce, and V-Nd) were synthesized. The electrochemical behavior of this series of complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry in solvents with varying polarity and dielectric constant (ε) (acetonitrile, ε = 37.5; N,N-dimethylformamide, ε = 36.7; and dichloromethane, ε = 8.93). The vanadium(V/IV) reduction potential shifted anodically with increasing cation charge compared to a complex lacking a proximal cation (ΔE_1/2 > 900 mV in acetonitrile and >700 mV in dichloromethane). In contrast, the reduction potential for all vanadyl salen-crown complexes measured in N,N-dimethylformamide was insensitive to the magnitude of the cationic charge, regardless of the electrolyte or counteranion used. Titration studies of N,N-dimethylformamide into acetonitrile resulted in cathodic shifting of the vanadium(V/IV) reduction potential with increasing concentration of N,N-dimethylformamide. Binding constants of N,N-dimethylformamide (log(K_DMF)) for the series of crown complexes show increased binding affinity in the order of V-La > V-Ba > V-K > (salen)V(O), indicating an enhancement of Lewis acid/base interaction with increasing cationic charge. The redox behavior of (salen)V(O) and (salen-OMe)V(O) (salen-OMe = N,N'-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalicylideneamine) was also investigated and compared to the crown-containing complexes. For (salen-OMe)V(O), a weak association of triflate salt at the vanadium(IV) oxidation state was observed through cyclic voltammetry titration experiments, and cation dissociation upon oxidation to vanadium(V) was identified. These studies demonstrate the noninnocent role of solvent coordination and cation/anion effects on redox behavior and, by extension, the local electric field.

In Vitro and In Vivo Biological Activities of Dipicolinate Oxovanadium(IV) Complexes

The work is focused on anticancer properties of dipicolinate (dipic)-based vanadium(IV) complexes [VO(dipic)(N^∩N)] bearing different diimines (2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole, 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione, 1,10-phenanthroline, and 2,2'-bipyridine), as well as differently 4,7-substituted 1,10-phenanthrolines. The antiproliferative effect of V(IV) systems was analyzed in different tumors (A2780, HCT116, and HCT116-DoxR) and normal (primary human dermal fibroblasts) cell lines, revealing a high cytotoxic effect of [VO(dipic)(N^∩N)] with 4,7-dimethoxy-phen (5), 4,7-diphenyl-phen (6), and 1,10-phenanthroline (8) against HCT116-DoxR cells. The cytotoxicity differences between these complexes can be correlated with their different internalization by HCT116-DoxR cells. Worthy of note, these three complexes were found to (i) induce cell death through apoptosis and autophagy pathways, namely, through ROS production; (ii) not to be cytostatic; (iii) to interact with the BSA protein; (iv) do not promote tumor cell migration or a pro-angiogenic capability; (v) show a slight in vivo anti-angiogenic capability, and (vi) do not show in vivo toxicity in a chicken embryo.

Combined effects of the lewis acidity and electric field of proximal redox innocent metal ions on the redox potential of vanadyl Schiff base complexes: an experimental and theoretical study

The reactivity of biological or synthetic metalloenzymes is modulated in the presence of redox innocent Lewis acidic metal ions as they change the redox potential of the redox active metal ions present in the active site of metalloenzymes. To study this effect, we synthesised a mono-nuclear V(IV) complex (VOL, 1) with an N₂O₄ donor bicompartmental ligand, characterized it by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and recorded its cyclic voltammogram in acetonitrile. The CV revealed a reversible redox process for the V(IV)/V(V) couple. The potential of the V(IV)/V(V) couple shifted to a more positive value when equivalent amounts of Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺ and Ba²⁺ ions were added separately to its acetonitrile solution, but the extent of shift for Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ was much less than that of the other metal ions. The guest metal ions except Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ were accommodated in the outer compartment of VOL as confirmed by IR and UV-Vis spectral analysis. Single-crystal structural analysis of [(VOL)KPF₆]₂, (1·K) and [(VOL)Ba(ClO₄)₂(H₂O)]_n, (1·Ba) also confirmed the hetero-metallic adduct formation. The correlation of the shift of the V(IV/V) redox potential with the Lewis acidity of respective metal ions deviated appreciably from linearity. DFT calculations suggest that the shift in potential is probably controlled by local electric fields induced by those ions, as indicated by 2D vector electric field maps.

Confining Bimetal Sites in Porous Metal Silicate Materials for Aerobic Oxidation of Phenols under Mild Conditions

Inspired by the unique catalytic properties of enzymes, numerous biomimetic catalysts have been developed with the intention to realize activation of unreactive reactants under mild conditions; however, the requirement of harsh activation conditions heavily deters their practical applications. We report herein a porous metal silicate (PMS) material PMS-12 that consists of redox-active copper and vanadium metal sites, which exhibits similar catalytic behaviors of enzymes by synergistically activating different reactant molecules and generating local redox potential to facilitate electron and charge transfer, demonstrating the highest catalytic efficiency for aerobic oxidation of phenols to produce highly value-added benzoquinones under mild conditions. Therefore, this work paves a practically applicable strategy for developing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts, which could activate unreactive reactant molecules to produce highly value-added chemicals under mild conditions.

Mononuclear/Binuclear [VIVO]/[VVO2] Complexes Derived from 1,3-Diaminoguanidine and Their Catalytic Application for the Oxidation of Benzoin via Oxygen Atom Transfer

Ligands H₄sal-dag (I) and H₄Brsal-dag (II) derived from 1,3-diaminoguanidine and salicylaldehyde or 5-bromosalicylaldehyde react with one or 2 mol equivalent of vanadium precursor to give two different series of vanadium complexes. Thus, complexes [V^IVO(H₂sal-dag) (H₂O)] (1) and [V^IVO(H₂Brsal-dag) (H₂O)] (2) were isolated by the reaction of an equimolar ratio of these ligands with [V^IVO(acac)₂] in MeOH. In the presence of K⁺/Cs⁺ ion and using aerially oxidized [V^IVO(acac)₂], the above reaction gave complexes [K(H₂O){V^VO₂(H₂sal-dag)}]₂ (3), [Cs(H₂O){V^VO₂(H₂sal-dag)}]₂ (4), [K(H₂O){VO₂(H₂Brsal-dag)}]₂ (5), and [Cs(H₂O){V^VO₂(H₂Brsal-dag)}]₂ (6), which could also be isolated by direct aerial oxidation of complexes 1 and 2 in MeOH in the presence of K⁺/Cs⁺ ion. Complexes [(H₂O)V^IVO(Hsal-dag)V^VO₂] (7) and [(H₂O)V^IVO(HBrsal-dag)V^VO₂] (8) were isolated upon increasing the ligand-to-vanadium precursor molar ratio to 1:2 under an air atmosphere. When I and II were reacted with aerially oxidized [V^IVO(acac)₂] in a 1:2 molar ratio in MeOH in the presence of K⁺/Cs⁺ ion, they formed [K(H₂O)₅{(V^VO₂)₂(Hsal-dag)}]₂ (9), [Cs(H₂O)₂{(V^VO₂)₂(Hsal-dag)}]₂ (10), [K₂(H₂O)₄{(V^VO₂)₂(Brsal-dag)}]₂ (11), and [Cs₂(H₂O)₄{(V^VO₂)₂(Brsal-dag)}]₂ (12). The structures of complexes 3, 4, 5, and 9 determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study confirm the mono-, bi-, tri-, and tetra-anionic behaviors of the ligands. All complexes were found to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of benzoin to benzil via oxygen atom transfer (OAT) between DMSO and benzoin. Under aerobic condition, this oxidation also proceeds effectively in the absence of DMSO. Electron paramagnetic resonance and ⁵¹V NMR studies demonstrated the active role of a stable V(IV) intermediate during OAT between DMSO and benzoin.

Applications of Vanadium, Niobium, and Tantalum Complexes in Organic and Inorganic Synthesis

Organometallic catalysis is a powerful strategy in chemical synthesis, especially with the cheap and low toxic metals based on green chemistry principle. Thus, the selection of the metal is particularly important to plan relevant and applicable processes. The group VB metals have been the subject of exciting and significant advances in both organic and inorganic synthesis. In this Review, we have summarized some reports from recent decades, which are about the development of group VB metals utilized in various types of reactions, such as oxidation, reduction, alkylation, dealkylation, polymerization, aromatization, protein synthesis, and practical water splitting.

A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Oxidation Catalysis by cis-[VIV(O)(Cl/F)(N4)]+ Species Mimicking the Active Center of Metal-Enzymes

Reaction of VIVOCl2 with the nonplanar tetradentate N4 bis-quinoline ligands yielded four oxidovanadium(IV) compounds of the general formula cis-[VIV(O)(Cl)(N4)]Cl. Sequential treatment of the two nonmethylated N4 oxidovanadium(IV) compounds with KF and NaClO4 resulted in the isolation of the species with the general formula cis-[VIV(O)(F)(N4)]ClO4. In marked contrast, the methylated N4 oxidovanadium(IV) derivatives are inert toward KF reaction due to steric hindrance, as evidenced by EPR and theoretical calculations. The oxidovanadium(IV) compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, cw EPR spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. The crystallographic characterization showed that the vanadium compounds have a highly distorted octahedral coordination environment and the d(VIV-F) = 1.834(1) Å is the shortest to be reported for (oxido)(fluorido)vanadium(IV) compounds. The experimental EPR parameters of the VIVO2+ species deviate from the ones calculated by the empirical additivity relationship and can be attributed to the axial donor atom trans to the oxido group and the distorted VIV coordination environment. The vanadium compounds act as catalysts toward alkane oxidation by aqueous H2O2 with moderate ΤΟΝ up to 293 and product yields of up to 29% (based on alkane); the vanadium(IV) is oxidized to vanadium(V), and the ligands remain bound to the vanadium atom during the catalysis, as determined by 51V and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The cw X-band EPR studies proved that the mechanism of the catalytic reaction is through hydroxyl radicals. The chloride substitution reaction in the cis-[VIV(O)(Cl)(N4)]+ species by fluoride and the mechanism of the alkane oxidation were studied by DFT calculations.

Mono Versus Dinuclear Vanadium(V) Complexes: Solvent Dependent Structural Versatility and Electro Syntheses of Mixed-Valence Oxovanadium(IV/V) Entities in Solution

Two mononuclear oxidovanadium(V) complexes type of [V^VO(L¹)(OMe)(MeOH)] (1), [V^VO(L²)(OMe)(MeOH)] (2) and two [V₂O₃]⁴⁺ core of μ-oxidodioxidodivanadium(V) complexes (L¹)(O)V^V-O-V^V(O)(L¹) (3) and (L²)(O)V^V-O-V^V(O)(L²) (4) and two complexes [V^VO(L¹)(8-Hq)] (5) and [V^VO(L²)(8-Hq)] (6) incorporating 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-hq) as co-ligand have been reported where L¹ [(E)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)cinnamohydrazide] and L² [(2E,N'E)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-3-(naphthalen-1-yl)acrylohydrazide] are the dianionic forms of the conjugated keto-imine functionalized substituted hydrazone ligands. The μ-oxidodioxidodivanadium complexes are generated upon switching the solvent from methanol to acetonitrile. The X-ray analysis showed octahedral geometry for the mononuclear complexes 1, 2 and 5 but oxido-bridged dinuclear complexes 3 and 4 formed penta-coordinated square-pyramidal geometry about metal atoms. Two mixed-valence species of type II, 3a and 4a, of general formulae (L)(O)V^IV-O-V^V(O)(L), are being generated upon constant potential electrolysis (CPE) of 3 and 4 respectively. Frozen solution EPR spectra have 13 hyperfine lines, revealing the unpaired electron is majorly localized on one of the two vanadium centres. All these complexes have been well characterized by physio-chemical techniques and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were applied to obtain further insight into the electronic structure of this type of molecule. The oxidomethoxido complexes 1 and 2 were taken to investigate the catechol oxidase mimicking activity following the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butyl catechol (3,5-DTBC) to 3,5-di-tert-butyl benzoquinone (3,5-DTBQ).

Vanadium-catalyzed Oxidative Conversion of Primary Aromatic Alcohols into Amides and Nitriles with Molecular Oxygen

Amides or nitriles are important building blocks because of the widespread occurrence in chemistry and biology. The development of green and efficient catalytic approaches to introduce nitrogen functionality is highly desired. Herein a vanadium-based material V-N-C-700 was prepared via a simple and convenient method, and employed for liquid-phase catalytic ammoxidation of alcohols with molecular oxygen. By using V-N-C-700/2-picolinic acid, primary aromatic alcohols was smoothly converted into the amides and nitriles in the presence of urea. The corresponding aldehydes are the key intermediates, and 2-picolinic acid could significantly enhance oxidation of alcohols into aldehydes. The amides were formed simultaneously along with nitriles, rather than only from nitriles via successive hydration. This work further expands non-noble metal catalysts for the preparation of amides and nitriles.

Three Si-substituted polyoxovanadates as efficient catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation and selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde

Three new Si-substituted polyoxovanadates (POVs), [Cd₂(dien)₂][Cd(dien)][Cd(Hdien)₂][V₁₅Si₆O₄₆(OH)₂(H₂O)]·7H₂O (1), [Co(enMe)₂]₃[Co₂(enMe)₂(H₂O)₂][V₁₆Si₄O₄₄(OH)₂(H₂O)]·6H₂O (2), and [Co(teta)]₄[V₁₆Si₄O₄₂(OH)₄(H₂O)]·10H₂O (3) (dien = diethylenetriamine; enMe = 1,2-diaminopropane; teta = triethylenetetramine) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and characterized. Structural analysis sheds light on the fact that the {V₁₅Si₆O₄₈}/{V₁₆Si₄O₄₆} clusters of compounds 1-3 were formed by replacing {VO₅} square pyramids in the classical {V₁₈O₄₂} cluster with {Si₂O₇} units. Compound 1 is a 2D bilayer structure formed by the [V₁₅Si₆O₄₆(OH)₂(H₂O)]^10- cluster and two types of bridging Cd complexes containing binuclear groups [Cd₂(dien)₂]⁴⁺. Compound 2 is a 3D framework constructed from the [V₁₆Si₄O₄₄(OH)₂(H₂O)]^10- cluster and two types of Co complex fragments including binuclear [Co₂(enMe)₂(H₂O)₂]⁴⁺. In compound 3, the [V₁₆Si₄O₄₂(OH)₄(H₂O)]^8- cluster is connected with bridging [Co(teta)]²⁺ to expand into a 2D network. Compounds 1 and 3 represent the first 2D assemblies based on a vanadosilicate cluster. 1-3 served as heterogeneous catalysts and exhibited highly efficient catalytic activities for the Knoevenagel condensation under mild ambient conditions with low catalyst loading, featuring the open Lewis base {V₁₅Si₆O₄₈}/{V₁₆Si₄O₄₆} sites and Lewis acid Cd²⁺/Co²⁺ sites. The conversion of benzaldehyde was up to 99.3% in 80 min at room temperature using 1 as a heterogeneous catalyst with only 0.37% catalyst loading. Moreover, compounds 1-3 as catalysts for selective oxidation of styrene to benzaldehyde exhibited excellent catalytic performance, high selectivity and could be readily recycled. Most strikingly, compound 1 showed excellent catalytic performance with 97.6% conversion of styrene and 100% selectivity of benzaldehyde in 15 min. In addition, the catalytic activity of catalyst 1 was well maintained after five cycling reactions.

Oxo(corrolato)vanadium(iv) catalyzed epoxidation: oxo(peroxo)(corrolato)vanadium(v) is the true catalytic species

Oxo(corrolato)vanadium(iv) complexes are highly efficient oxidizers in the presence of H2O2 and KHCO3, and oxo(peroxo)(corrolato)vanadium(v) complexes are the catalytic intermediate.

Protein binding and cytotoxic activities of monomeric and dimeric oxido-vanadium(V) salan complexes: Exploring the solution behavior of monoalkoxido-bound oxido-vanadium(V) complex

Three ONNO donor tetradentate diamino bis(phenolato) "salan" ligands, N, N'-dimethyl-N, N'-bis-(5-chloro-2-hydroxy-3-methyl-benzyl)-1,2-diaminoethane (H₂L¹), N, N'-dimethyl-N, N'-bis-(5-chloro-2-hydroxy-3-isopropyl-6-methyl-benzyl)-1,2-diamino-ethane (H₂L²) and N, N'-bis-(5-chloro-2-hydroxy-3-isopropyl-6-methyl-benzyl)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (H₂L³) have been synthesized by following Mannich condensation reaction. Reaction of these ligands with their corresponding vanadium metal precursors gave one oxidomethoxidovanadium(V) [V^VOL¹(OCH₃)] (1) and two monooxido-bridged divanadium (V, V) complexes [V^VOL^2-3]₂(μ-O) (2-3). The complexes were characterized by IR, UV-vis, NMR and ESI mass spectrometry. Also, the structure of all the complexes (1-3) was confirmed by the Single-Crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which revealed a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal centres. The solution behavior of the [V^VOL¹(OCH₃)] (1) reveals the formation of two different types of V(V) species in solution, the structurally characterized compound 1 and its corresponding monooxido-bridged divanadium (V, V) complex [V^VOL¹]₂(μ-O), which was further studied by IR, and NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior of all the complexes was evaluated through cyclic voltammetry. Interaction of the salan-V(V) complexes with human serum albumin (HSA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were analysed through fluorescence quenching, UV-vis absorption titration, synchronous fluorescence, circular dichroism studies, and förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Finally, the in vitro cytotoxicity of the complexes was investigated against MCF-7 and HT-29 and NIH-3T3 cell lines. Cytotoxicity value of complexes in both MCF-7 and HT-29 follows the same trend that is 3 > 1 > 2 which is in line with protein binding affinity of the complexes.

Recent reports on Pyridoxal derived Schiff base complexes

Pyridoxal and Pyridoxal 5-phosphate are two among the six aqua soluble vitamers of vitamin B6. They can form Schiff bases readily due to the presence of aldehyde group. Schiff bases can offer diverse coordination possibilities for many transition metals as has been found in a large volume of research till now. The coordination complexes thus formed gives insight into the active core structure and enzymatic activities of vit B6 containing enzymes. Apart from that, these complexes have been found useful as catalysts for synthesis of fine chemicals, as sensors and for their diverse biological activities.

Oxido- and Dioxido-Vanadium(V) Complexes Supported on Carbon Materials: Reusable Catalysts for the Oxidation of Cyclohexane

Oxidovanadium(V) and dioxidovanadium(V) compounds, [VO(OEt)L] (1) and [Et3NH][VO2L] (2), were synthesized using an aroylhydrazone Schiff base (5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H2L). They were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), (1H and 51V) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Both complexes were immobilized on functionalized carbon nanotubes and activated carbon. The catalytic performances of 1 and 2, homogenous and anchored on the supports, were evaluated for the first time towards the MW-assisted peroxidative oxidation (with tert-butylhydroperoxide, TBHP) of cyclohexane under heterogeneous conditions. The immobilization of 1 and 2 on functionalized carbon materials improved the efficiency of catalytic oxidation and allowed the catalyst recyclability with a well-preserved catalytic activity.

A benzene-bridged divanadium complex-early transition metal catalyst for alkene alkylarylation with PhI(O2CR)2via decarboxylation

The synthesis, structure and catalytic activity of a benzene-bridged divanadium complex were comprehensively studied. The reduction of (Nacnac)VCl2 (1) (Nacnac = (2,6-iPr2C6H3NCMe)2HC) supported by β-diketiminate with potassium graphite (KC8) by employing benzene as the solvent allows access to the benzene-bridged inverted-sandwich divanadium complex (μ-η6:η6-C6H6)[V(Nacnac)]2 (2a), which can catalyze alkene alkylarylation with hypervalent iodine(iii) reagents (HIRs) via decarboxylation to generate regioselectively diverse indolinones. Furthermore, the mild nature of this reaction was amenable to a wide range of functionalities on alkenes and HIRs. Mechanistic studies revealed a relay sequence of decarboxylative radical alkylation/radical arylation/oxidative re-aromatization.
