Luminescent copper(I) complexes with halogenido-bridged dimeric core

Ligand-mediate exciton allocation enables efficient cluster-based white light-emitting diodes via single and heavy doping

Despite potential in high-resolution and low-cost displays and lighting, multi-doping structures and low concentrations (<1%) limit repeatability and stability of single-emissive-layer white light-emitting devices. Herein, we report a singly doped white-emitting system of blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence host matrix (CzAcSF) doped by yellow Cu4I4 cluster ([tBCzDppy]2Cu4I4). CzAcSF:x% [tBCzDppy]2Cu4I4 films realize photo- and electro-luminescence colors from cool white to warm white at x = 20-40. The external quantum efficiency of 23.5% was achieved at x = 30, indicating the record-high efficiency among solution-processed analogs and the largest doping concentration among efficient white light-emitting devices. It shows that di(tert-butyl)carbazole moieties in [tBCzDppy]2Cu4I4 provide high-lying excited energy levels at~2.6 eV to mediate energy transfer from CzAcSF (2.9 eV) to coordinated Cu4I4 (2.2 eV). Our results demonstrate the antenna effect of ligands on optimizing charge and energy transfer in organic-cluster systems and superiority of white cluster light-emitting diodes in practical applications.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Silver(I) Coordination Polymers Bridged by Dimethylpyrazine: Comparison of Emissive Excited States between Silver(I) and Copper(I) Congeners

Highly luminescent silver(I) coordination polymers [Ag2X2(PPh3)2(Me2pyz)]n (X = I, Br, Cl; Me2pyz: 2,5-dimethylpyrazine) were prepared together with copper congeners [Cu2X2(PPh3)2(Me2pyz)]n (X = I, Br). All the complexes showed thermally activated delayed fluorescence from the charge-transfer states in the visible region, from blue to red. The isomorphous relationship among the complexes allowed a detailed discussion of the effect of halogenido ligands and crystal packing on their luminescence energy. The relaxation in the emissive excited states (ESs) was determined to be more remarkable in silver complexes than in copper complexes despite their isomorphous structures, and the electronic effect of halogenido ligands was comparable to the effect of relaxation in emissive ESs.

Unraveling the Remarkable Influence of Substituents on the Emission Variation and Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Dinuclear Aluminum Triple-Stranded Helicates

This study explored the development of functional dyes using aluminum, focusing on aluminum-based dinuclear triple-stranded helicates, and examined the effects of substituent variations on their structural and optical properties. Key findings revealed that the modification of methyl groups to the pyrrole positions significantly extended the conjugation system, resulting in a red shift in the absorption and emission spectra. Conversely, the modification of methyl groups at the methine positions due to steric hindrances increased the torsion angle of the ligands, leading to a blue shift in the absorption and emission spectra. A common feature across all complexes was that in the excited state, one of the three ligands underwent significant structural relaxation. This led to a pronounced Stokes shift and minimal spectra overlap with high photoluminescence behaviors. Moreover, our research extended to the optical resolution of the newly synthesized complexes by analyzing the chiroptical properties of the resulting enantiomers, including their circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. These insights offer valuable contributions to the design and application of novel aluminum-based functional dyes, potentially influencing a range of fields, from materials science to optoelectronics.

Stabilization of Luminescent Mononuclear Three-Coordinate CuI Complexes by Two Distinct Cavity-Shaped Diphosphanes Obtained from a Single α-Cyclodextrin Precursor

Slightly different reaction conditions afforded two distinct cavity-shaped cis-chelating diphosphanes from the same starting materials, namely diphenyl(2-phosphanylphenyl)phosphane and an α-cyclodextrin-derived dimesylate. Thanks to their metal-confining properties, the two diphosphanes form only mononuclear [CuX(PP)] complexes (X=Cl, Br, or I) with the tricoordinated metal ion located just above the center of the cavity. The two series of CuI complexes display markedly different luminescence properties that are both influenced by the electronic properties of the ligand and the unique steric environment provided by the cyclodextrin (CD) cavity. The excited state lifetimes of all complexes are significantly longer than those of the cavity-free analogues suggesting peculiar electronic effects that affect radiative deactivation constants. The overall picture stemming from absorption and emission data suggests close-lying charge-transfer (MLCT, XLCT) and triplet ligand-centered (LC) excited states.

Atomic-Scale Elucidation of Unusually Distorted Dimeric Complexes Confined in a Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Nanoconfinement in metal-organic framework (MOF) pores can lead to the isolation of unusual or reactive metal complexes. However, MOFs that support the stabilization and precise structural elucidation of metal complexes and small metal clusters are rare. Here, we report a thermally and chemically stable zirconium-based MOF (University of Adelaide Material-1001, UAM-1001) with a high density of free bis-pyrazolyl units that can confine mono- and dinuclear metal complexes. The precursor MOF, UAM-1000, has a high degree of structural flexibility, but post synthetic modification with a bracing linker, biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, partially rigidifies the MOF (UAM-1001). This allows "matrix isolation" and detailed structural elucidation of postsynthetically added dimeric complexes bound within a tetradentate binding site formed by two linkers. Dimeric species [Co2Cl4], [Cu2Cl4], [Ni2Cl3(H2O)2]Cl, and [Rh2(CO)3Cl2] were successfully isolated in UAM-1001 and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Comparison of the UAM-1001 isolated species with similar complexes in the solid state reveals that UAM-1001 can significantly distort the structures and enforce notably shorter metal-metal distances. For example, MOF tethering allows isolation of a [Cu2Cl4] complex that rapidly reacts with water in the solid state. The stability, porosity, and modulated flexibility of UAM-1001 provide an ideal platform material for the isolation and study of new dimeric complexes and their reactivity.

Mononuclear copper(I) complexes bearing a 3-phenyl-5-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,2,4-triazole ligand: synthesis, crystal structure, TADF-luminescence, and mechanochromic effects

Three new mononuclear heteroleptic copper(I) halide complexes, [CuL(PPh3)2X] (X = Cl, Br, I), based on 3-phenyl-5-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (L) and triphenylphosphine (PPh3) ligands, have been prepared by reaction of CuX (X = Cl, Br, I), L and PPh3 in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 : 2 in MeCN solutions. The synthesized complexes exhibit blue light emission in solutions and bright green emission in the crystal state with quantum yields of up to 100%. The luminescence decay analysis and density functional theory calculations revealed that the emission of solid samples at room temperature corresponds to the thermally activated delayed fluorescence, while that at 77 K is assigned to phosphorescence. Utilizing the studied complexes in OLED heterostructures resulted in high-performing green-emitting devices with an external quantum efficiency of up to 13.4%.

Solvatochromic behaviour of cyclic dithioether-functionalized triphenylamine ligands and their mechano-responsive Cu(I) coordination polymers

Cu(I)-based coordination polymers (CPs) are known as efficient emissive materials providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective platform for the development of various functional materials and sensors. In addition to the nature of the metal center, organic ligands also play a crucial role in controlling the emissive properties of coordination polymers. Herein, we report on the synthesis of dithiane- and dithiolane-substituted triphenylamine ligands L1 and L2. These ligands were found to be emissive both in the solid state and in solution. In addition, these ligands exhibit solvatochromic behaviour due to the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) phenomenon. Next, coordination behaviour of these ligands was explored with Cu(I)X salts (X = Br and Cl) and four new 1D coordination polymers [{Cu(μ2-X)2Cu}(μ2-L)]n, CP1 (X = Br, L = L1), CP2 (X = Cl, L = L1), CP3 (X = Br, L = L2), and CP4 (X = Cl, L = L2) were synthesized and crystallographically characterized. The emission behaviour of all the CPs suggests ligand-centered transitions. On mechanical grinding, emission maxima (λem) for CP1 and CP2 were blue-shifted, whereas for CP3 and CP4 red-shifts were observed. All CPs were found to emit at 448 nm with increased intensity after grinding. It is supposed that grinding is responsible for a change in the spatial arrangement (dihedral angles) of the phenyl groups of triphenylamine, causing the observed emission shifts. Furthermore, the higher emission intensity after grinding suggests the occurrence of a similar phenomenon as an aggregation-induced quenching in these CPs.

Binuclear Copper(I) Complexes for Near-Infrared Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

Two binuclear heteroleptic CuI complexes, namely Cu-NIR1 and Cu-NIR2, bearing rigid chelating diphosphines and π-conjugated 2,5-di(pyridin-2-yl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole as the bis-bidentate ligand are presented. The proposed dinuclearization strategy yields a large bathochromic shift of the emission when compared to the mononuclear counterparts (M1-M2) and enables shifting luminescence into the near-infrared (NIR) region in both solution and solid state, showing emission maximum at ca. 750 and 712 nm, respectively. The radiative process is assigned to an excited state with triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3 MLCT) character as demonstrated by in-depth photophysical and computational investigation. Noteworthy, X-ray analysis of the binuclear complexes unravels two interligand π-π-stacking interactions yielding a doubly locked structure that disfavours flattening of the tetrahedral coordination around the CuI centre in the excited state and maintain enhanced NIR luminescence. No such interaction is present in M1-M2. These findings prompt the successful use of Cu-NIR1 and Cu-NIR2 in NIR light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), which display electroluminescence maximum up to 756 nm and peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.43 %. Their suitability for the fabrication of white-emitting LECs is also demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first examples of NIR electroluminescent devices based on earth-abundant CuI emitters.

Perspectives on the Structural Design and Luminescent Behavior of Liquid Crystalline Materials Based on Copper(I) Complexes

This paper provides insight into the various studies that have been carried out to date on liquid crystalline materials based on copper(I) complexes. Although the study of copper(I) complexes with respect to their liquid crystalline property is quite limited, metallomesogens prepared with different structural components and ligands from groups such as azamacrocycles, alkythiolates, ethers, isocyanides, phenanthroline, Schiff bases, pyrazolates, phosphines, biquinolines, and benzoylthioureas are reported and summarized in this review. A special section is dedicated to the discussion of emission properties of copper(I) metallomesogens.

Interaction of N-nitrosamines with binuclear copper complexes for luminescent detection

Cu(I) from tetrakis(acetonitrile)copper(I) hexafluorophosphate ([Cu(MeCN)₄]PF₆) was complexed with five structurally related phosphines containing N-heterocycles. The interactions between the resulting complexes and some N-nitrosamines were studied using X-ray crystallography as well as emission spectroscopy. Upon complexation, three phosphine ligands bridge two Cu(I) centers to give paddlewheel type structures that displayed a range of emission wavelengths spanning the visible region. N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was shown to coordinate to one of the two copper centers in some of the paddlewheel complexes in the solid state and this interaction also quenches their emissions in solution. The influence of the weakly coordinating anion on crystal and spectroscopic properties of one of the paddlewheel complexes was also examined using tetrakis(acetonitrile)copper(I) perchlorate ([Cu(MeCN)₄]ClO₄) as an alternative Cu(I) source. Similarly, copper(II) perchlorate hexahydrate (Cu(ClO₄)₂·6H₂O) was used for complexation to observe the impact of metal oxidation state on the two aforementioned properties. Lastly, the spectroscopic properties of the complex between Ph₂P(1-Isoquinoline) and Cu(I) was shown to exhibit solvent dependence when the counterion is ClO₄^-. These Cu(I) complexes are bench stable solids and may be useful materials for developing a fluorescence based detection method for N-nitrosamines.

TADF and X-ray Radioluminescence of New Cu(I) Halide Complexes: Different Halide Effects on These Processes

A series of complexes [Cu2X2(Pic3PO)2] (X = Cl, Br, I) based on tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)phosphine oxide (Pic3PO) has been synthesized. At 298 K, these compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) of 1(M+X)LCT type with λmax varying from 485 to 545 nm, and quantum efficiency up to 54%. In the TADF process, the halide effect appears as the emission intensification and bathochromic shift of λmax in the following order X = I < Br < Cl. Upon X-ray irradiation, the title compounds emit radioluminescence, the emission bands of which have the same shape as those at TADF, thereby meaning a similar radiative excited state. By contrast to TADF, the halide effect in the radioluminescence is reversed: its intensity grows in the order X = Cl < Br < I, since heavier atoms absorb X-rays more efficiently. These findings essentially contribute to our knowledge about the halide effect in the photo- and radioluminescent Cu(I) halide emitters.

Solution-Processable Copper Halide Based Hybrid Materials Consisting of Cationic Ligands with Different Coordination Modes

Using cationic ligands containing both aromatic and aliphatic coordination sites, we have synthesized and structurally characterized five new CuX-based hybrid materials consisting of anionic inorganic motifs that also form coordinate bonds with the cationic organic ligands. As a result of the unique bonding nature at the inorganic/organic interfaces, these compounds demonstrate strong resistance toward heat and can be readily processed in solution. They emit light in the visible region ranging from cyan to yellow color, with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) reaching 71%. The influence of the different coordination modes of the ligands on their emission behavior was investigated employing both experimental and theoretical methods, which have provided insight in understanding structure-property relationships in these materials and guidelines for tuning and enhancing their chemical and physical properties.

Emission and Luminescent Vapochromism Control of Octahedral Cu4 I4 Complexes by Conformationally Restricted P,N Ligands

A conformationally restricted P,N-ligand capable of the design of polynuclear copper(I) complexes was synthesized via the reaction of primary pyridylphosphine, paraformaldehyde, and benzhydrylamine. The reaction of the ligand with copper(I) iodide leads to the tetranuclear copper(I) complex with the octahedral type of copper-iodide core. Different orientation of coordination bonds of the ligands relative to the P,N₂ -heterocyclic fragments and to the Cu₄ I₄ cores leads to the existence of two types of conformers of the complex with "compact" or "stretched" geometry of the Cu₄ I₄ cluster. This lability of the complex allowed for obtaining two crystalline phases displaying green or red luminescence. The TDDFT computations along with XRD structural analysis gave a strong interpretation of the green emission belonging to the "compact" form of the complex and belonging of the red emission to the "stretched" form. Moreover, both crystalline phases demonstrate the strong vapochromic responses of luminescence on the vapors of wide range of solvents.

Synthesis, Electrochemistry, Photophysics, and Photochemistry of a Discrete Tetranuclear Copper(I) Sulfido Cluster

A tetranuclear copper(I) complex, [Cu₄{μ-(Ph₂P)₂NH}₄(μ₄-S)](PF₆)₂ (1), was synthesized. It was found to display intense and long-lived phosphorescence in the solid and solution states. The lowest-energy excited state was assigned as ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) [S^2- → Cu₄] mixed with some metal-centered (ds/dp) character. In addition, the phosphorescent state of this complex was found to be quenched by pyridinium acceptors via an oxidative electron-transfer quenching process. An excited-state reduction potential of -1.74 V versus saturated salt calomel electrode was estimated through oxidative quenching studies with a series of structurally related pyridinium acceptors, indicative of its strong reducing power in the excited state. From the transient absorption difference spectrum of the tetranuclear copper(I) sulfido complex and 4-(methoxycarbonyl)-N-methylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate, in addition to the characteristic absorption of the pyridinyl radical at ca. 395 nm, two absorption bands at ca. 500 and 660 nm were also observed. The former was assigned as an LMCT absorption [S^2- → Cu₄] and the latter as an intervalence charge-transfer transition, associated with the mixed-valence species Cu^I/Cu^I/Cu^I/Cu^II.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Heavier Pnictogen Complexes

Recent success in the synthesis of π-conjugated heavier pnictogen (As, Sb, and Bi) compounds and their transition metal complexes has led to the current surge in interest that led to significant development in the field of photophysical and optoelectronic properties of heavier pnictogens and their transition metal complexes. The presence of heavier pnictogens (As, Sb and Bi) in the molecular skeleton promotes inter-system crossing (ISC) and reverse inter-system crossing (RISC), because of the heavy atom effect, via altering the intermolecular interactions and orbital energy levels. As a result, π-conjugated heavier pnictogen compounds such as arsines, dibenzoarsepins, arsinoquinoline, heterofluorene, benzo[b]heterole (heterole=arsole, bismole, and stibole) show unique optoelectronic properties such as narrow bandgap, low-energy absorption, and long-wavelength emission than lighter pnictogen-based compounds. This review focuses on recent advances in the synthesis and photophysical properties of heavier pnictogen compounds. The synthesis and photophysical properties of heavier pnictogens are discussed and elaborated.

Stable Luminescent [Cu(NN)(PP)]+ Complexes Incorporating a β-Cyclodextrin-Based Diphosphane Ligand with Metal-Confining Properties

A β-cyclodextrin-based diphosphane with metal-confining properties was efficiently synthesized thanks to an unprecedented Smiles-like rearrangement of diphenyl-(2-phosphanylphenyl)phosphane in the presence of excess n-BuLi. The cis-chelating bidentate ligand is capable of forming very stable heteroleptic [Cu(NN)(PP)]⁺ complexes in which a metal-bound diimine ligand (bpy, phen, or mmp) is located within the cyclodextrin cavity. As a result of ligand encapsulation, flattening of the metal tetrahedral geometry in the excited state is disfavored, thereby resulting in enhanced luminescent properties.

Green Emissive Copper(I) Coordination Polymer Supported by the Diethylpyridylphosphine Ligand as a Luminescent Sensor for Overheating Processes

Tertiary diethylpyridylphosphine was synthesized by the reaction of pyridylphosphine with bromoethane in a suberbasic medium. The reaction of phosphine with the copper(I) iodide led to the formation of a copper(I) coordination polymer, which, according to the X-ray diffraction data, has an intermediate structure with a copper-halide core between the octahedral and stairstep geometries of the Cu₄I₄ clusters. The obtained coordination polymer exhibits a green emission in the solid state, which is caused by the ³(M+X)LCT transitions. The heating up of the copper(I) coordination polymer to 138.5 °C results in its monomerization and the formation of a new solid-state phase. The new phase exhibits a red emission, with the emission band maximum at 725 nm. According to the experimental data and quantum chemical computations, it was concluded that depolymerization probably leads to a complex that is formed with the octahedral structure of the copper-halide core. The resulting solid-state phase can be backward-converted to the polymer phase via recrystallization from the acetone or DMF. Therefore, the obtained coordination polymer can be considered a sensor or detector for the overheating of processes that should be maintained at temperatures below 138 °C (e.g., engines, boiling liquids, solar heat systems, etc.).

Copper Iodide Cluster Incorporated Luminescent Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coating Exhibiting Both Corrosion Protection and Antibacterial Properties

A photoluminescent organic-inorganic hybrid coating is synthesized by the incorporation of an emissive Cu₄I₄ core into a cross-linked coating network through Cu-P coordination bonds. The hybrid coating not only emits strong yellow emission under UV-light irradiation but also exhibits corrosion protection of the metallic surface. Moreover, bactericidal properties are studied that were first reported for Cu₄I₄-based hybrid light-emitting materials.

Thermal Enhancement of Luminescence for Negative Thermal Expansion in Molecular Materials

Overcoming thermal quenching is an essential issue in the practical application of luminescent materials. Herein, we found that negative thermal expansion (NTE) can achieve the thermal enhancement of luminescence in molecular materials based on three metal-organic frameworks CuX-bpy (X = Cl, Br, I; bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine). All complexes exhibit NTE on the c-axis, and the strongest NTE leads to a contraction of the Cu...Cu distance in CuCl-bpy, which further intensifies the luminescence emission. This phenomenon indicates the existence of thermally enhanced charge transfer. Moreover, the origin of the distinction in charge transfer attributed to the different valence states of the copper is investigated through the combined studies of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure, and density functional theory calculations. This research provides a new approach to modulating the luminescence thermal enhancement by NTE.

Novel Cu(I)-5-nitropyridine-2-thiol Cluster with NIR Emission: Structural and Photophysical Characterization

A novel Cu(I) cluster compound has been synthesized by reacting CuI with the 2,2'-dithiobis(5-nitropyridine) ligand under solvothermal conditions. During the reaction, the original ligand breaks into the 5-nitropyridine-2-thiolate moiety, which acts as the coordinating ligand with both N- and S-sites, leading to a distorted octahedral Cu₆S₆ cluster. The structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-IR analysis, and the photophysical properties have been determined in the solid state by means of steady-state and time-resolved optical techniques. The cluster presents a near-infrared emission showing an unusual temperature dependence: when passing from 77 to 298 K, a blue-shift of the emission band is observed, associated with a decrease in its intensity. Time-dependent-density functional theory calculations suggest that the observed behavior can be ascribed to a complex interplay of excited states, basically in the triplet manifold.

The Role of a Confined Space on the Reactivity and Emission Properties of Copper(I) Clusters

Metal clusters have gained a lot of interest for their remarkable photoluminescence and catalytic properties. However, a major drawback of such materials is their poor stability in air and humidity conditions. Herein we describe a versatile method to synthesize luminescent Cu(I) clusters inside the pores of zeolites, using a sublimation technique with the help of high vacuum and high temperature. The porous materials play an essential role as a protecting media against the undesirable and easy oxidation of Cu(I). The obtained clusters show fascinating luminescence properties, and their reactivity can be triggered by insertion in the pores of organic monodentate ligands such as pyridine or triphenylphosphine. The coordinating ligands can lead to the formation of Cu(I) complexes with completely different emission properties. In the case of pyridine, the final compound was characterized and identified as a cubane-like structure. A thermochromism effect is also observed, featuring, for instance, a hypsochromic effect for a phosphine derivative at 77K. The stability of the encapsulated systems in zeolites is rather enthralling: they are stable and emissive even after several months in the air.

Overcoming Efficiency Limitation of Cluster Light-Emitting Diodes with Asymmetrically Functionalized Biphosphine Cu4I4 Cubes

Electroluminescent (EL) nanoclusters holding promise for new-generation cluster light-emitting devices (CLEDs) rapidly emerge. However, slow radiation and serious quenching of cluster emitters largely limit the device performance. Herein, we report two monofunctionalized biphosphine chelated Cu₄I₄ clusters [DMACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄ and [DPACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄. The asymmetric modification and electron-donating effect of acridine groups lead to the iodine-to-ligand charge transfer predominant excited states of the clusters, which feature thermally activated delayed fluorescence with markedly improved singlet radiative rate constants and reduced triplet nonradiative rate constants. As consequence, compared to the nonfunctionalized parent cluster, [DPACDBFDP]₂Cu₄I₄ achieves 16-fold increased photoluminescence (81%) and 20-fold increased EL (19.5%) quantum efficiencies. Such new-record efficiencies make CLEDs achieve the state-of-the-art performance of all kinds of EL technologies.

Recent Progress in Luminescent Cu(I) Halide Complexes: A Mini-Review

Copper(I) halide complexes are well sought-after materials due to their rich structural diversities and photophysical properties. Profoundly, there is a direct relationship between each structural variation and luminescence of these complexes, for a purported use. In this review, recent publications within the last 2 years about copper(I) halide complexes, centering on their structural dimensionalities with derivatives of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur ligands, have been considered alongside their effects on luminescence.

Sky Blue and Yellow Cluster Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Asymmetric Cu 4 I 4 Nanocubes

Controllably optimizing excited-state characteristics is crucial for luminescent nanoclusters but remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report an effective “ligand-induced asymmetrization” strategy for constructing thermally activated delayed fluorescence-featured cubic Cu 4 I 4 nanoclusters with asymmetric configurations, named [tBCzDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 and [PTZDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 . Through changing 3,6-di- tert -butyl-carbazole (tBCz) to phenothiazine (PTZ) with a stronger electron-donating effect, emission color is tuned from greenish blue of [tBCzDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 to yellow of [PTZDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 , as well as the triplet locally excited state of the former to the triplet charge transfer state of the latter. Temperature-correlated spectroscopic investigation indicates that in terms of triplet quenching suppression, [tBCzDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 is superior to [PTZDBFDP] 2 Cu 4 I 4 , in accord with the stabilities of their triplet locally excited state and triplet charge transfer state. As a consequence, these asymmetric Cu 4 I 4 nanocubes endowed their cluster light-emitting diodes with the external quantum efficiencies beyond 12% for sky blue and 8% for yellow. These results suggest the significance and effectiveness of ligand engineering for optoelectronic nanoclusters.

New Copper Bromide Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Molecular Compounds with Anionic Inorganic Core and Cationic Organic Ligands

Here, organic-inorganic hybrid molecular compounds based on copper(I) bromide have been synthesized by slow-diffusion method. The inorganic modules of these two structures are Cu2Br42− anion, and the inorganic modules are coordinated to cationic organic ligands via Cu-N coordinative bonds. Both of these compounds are luminescent, emitting green emissions under UV excitation.

Pyridylarsine-based Cu(I) complexes showing TADF mixed with fast phosphorescence: a speeding-up emission rate using arsine ligands

Can arsine ligands be preferred over similar phosphines to design Cu(I)-based TADF materials? The present study reveals that arsines can indeed be superior to reach shorter decay times of Cu(I) emitters. This has been exemplified on a series of bis(2-pyridyl)phenylarsine-based complexes [Cu₂(Py₂AsPh)₂X₂] (X = Cl, Br, and I), the emission decay times of which are significantly shorter (2-9 μs at 300 K) than those of their phosphine analogs [Cu₂(Py₂PPh)₂X₂] (5-33 μs). This effect is caused by two factors: (i) large ΔE(S₁-T₁) gaps of the arsine complexes (1100-1345 cm^-1), thereby phosphorescence is admixed with TADF at 300 K, thus reducing the total emission decay time compared to the TADF-only process by 5-28%; (ii) higher SOC strength of arsenic (ζ_l = 1202 cm^-1) against phosphorus (ζ_l = 230 cm^-1) makes the k_r(T₁ → S₀) rate of the Cu(I)-arsine complexes by 1.3 to 4.2 times faster than that of their phosphine analogs. It is also noteworthy that the TADF/phosphorescence ratio for [Cu₂(Py₂AsPh)₂X₂] at 300 K is halogen-regulated and varies in the order: Cl (1 : 1) < Br (3 : 1) ≈ I (3.5 : 1). These findings provide a new insight into the future design of dual-mode (TADF + phosphorescence) emissive materials with reduced lifetimes.

Enhancing the phosphorescence decay pathway of Cu(I) emitters - the role of copper-iodide moiety

Speeding up the phosphorescence channel in luminescent copper(I) complexes has been extremely challenging due to the copper atoms relatively low spin-orbit coupling constant compared to heavier metals such as iridium. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of three mononuclear copper(I) complexes with diimines, triphenylphosphine, and iodide ligands to evaluate the effect of the copper-iodide (Cu-I) moiety into the phosphorescence decay pathway. Temperature-dependent photophysical studies revealed combined thermally activated delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence emission, with a phosphorescence decay rate of the order of 10⁴ s^-1. Density functional theory calculations indicate very high spin-orbit coupling matrix elements between the low-lying states of these complexes. Compared to the classical [Cu(phen)(POP)]⁺, our results demonstrate that Cu-I is a versatile moiety to speed up the phosphorescence decay pathway in about one order of magnitude, and it can be prepared by a simplified synthetic route with few synthetic steps. Furthermore, the SOC matrix elements and the phosphorescence decay rates of these complexes are comparable to those of extensively applied coordination complexes based on heavier metals, making them a promising alternative as active layers of organic light-emitting diodes.

Coordinated Anionic Inorganic Module-An Efficient Approach Towards Highly Efficient Blue-Emitting Copper Halide Ionic Hybrid Structures

Copper halide based organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductors exhibit great potential as light-emitting materials with excellent structural variety and optical tunability. Among them, copper halide hybrid molecular compounds with discrete inorganic modules are particularly interesting due to their high quantum efficiency. However, synthesizing highly efficient blue-emitting molecular clusters remains challenging. Here, we report a novel and facile strategy for the design and synthesis of highly luminescent copper halide hybrid structures by fabricating coordinated anionic inorganic modules in these ionic species. By using this approach, a family of strongly blue-emitting copper halide hybrid ionic structures has been prepared with high internal quantum yields up to 98 %. Strong luminescence from the combination of ionic and covalent bonds in these compounds make them ideal candidates as alternative, rare-earth-element free light-emitting materials for possible use in optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties of Yellow-Green and Blue Photoluminescent Dinuclear and Octanuclear Copper(I) Iodide Complexes with a Disilanylene-Bridged Bispyridine Ligand

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical investigations of CuI complexes with a disilanylene-bridged bispyridine ligand 1 are herein presented. Dinuclear (2) and ladder-like (3) octanuclear copper(I) complexes were straightforwardly prepared by exactly controlling the ratio of CuI/ligand 1. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed that dinuclear complex 2 had no apparent π…π stacking whereas octanuclear complex 3 had π…π stacking in the crystal packing. In the solid state, the complexes display yellow-green (λ_em = 519 nm, Φ = 0.60, τ = 11 µs, 2) and blue (λ_em = 478 nm, Φ = 0.04, τ = 2.6 µs, 3) phosphorescence, respectively. The density functional theory calculations validate the differences in their optical properties. The difference in the luminescence efficiency between 2 and 3 is attributed to the presence of π…π stacking and the different luminescence processes.

Copper(I) iodide-based organic–inorganic hybrid compounds as phosphor materials

Two photoluminescent copper(I) iodide inorganic-organic hybrid materials have been synthesized and structurally characterized as 1D-Cu2I2(bpoe)2 (1) and 1D-Cu2I2(bbtpe-m)2 (2) (bpoe = 1,2-bis(pyridin-3-yloxy)ethane, bbtpe-m = 1,1′-(3-methylpentane-1,5-diyl)bis(1H-benzo[1,2,3]triazole). Both are chain-like structures composed of Cu2I2 rhomboid dimers connected by bidentate ligands. Their emission colors range from cyan to yellow with relatively high internal quantum yields in the solid state. The tunable band gap and emission color is achieved by varying the LUMO energies of the ligands. The structures are robust and remain stable up to T = 260 °C, and coupled with their efficient and adjustable luminescence, facile synthesis, and non-toxic nature, these compounds demonstrate potential as rare earth element (REE)-free phosphors.

Time-Dependent Self-Assembly of Copper(II) Coordination Polymers and Tetranuclear Rings: Catalysts for Oxidative Functionalization of Saturated Hydrocarbons

This study describes a time-dependent self-assembly generation of new copper(II) coordination compounds from an aqueous-medium reaction mixture composed of copper(II) nitrate, H₃bes biobuffer (N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid), ammonium hydroxide, and benzenecarboxylic acid, namely, 4-methoxybenzoic (Hfmba) or 4-chlorobenzoic (Hfcba) acid. Two products were isolated from each reaction, namely, 1D coordination polymers [Cu₃(μ₃-OH)₂(μ-fmba)₂(fmba)₂(H₂O)₂]_n (1) or [Cu₂(μ-OH)₂(μ-fcba)₂]_n (2) and discrete tetracopper(II) rings [Cu₄(μ-Hbes)₃(μ-H₂bes)(μ-fmba)]·2H₂O (3) or [Cu₄(μ-Hbes)₃(μ-H₂bes)(μ-fcba)]·4H₂O (4), respectively. These four compounds were obtained as microcrystalline air-stable solids and characterized by standard methods, including the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures of 1 and 2 feature distinct types of metal-organic chains driven by the μ₃- or μ-OH^- ligands along with the μ-benzenecarboxylate linkers. The structures of 3 and 4 disclose the chairlike Cu₄ rings assembled from four μ-bridging and chelating aminoalcoholate ligands along with μ-benzenecarboxylate moieties playing a core-stabilizing role. Catalytic activity of 1-4 was investigated in two model reactions, namely, (a) the mild oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons with hydrogen peroxide to form alcohols and ketones and (b) the mild carboxylation of alkanes with carbon monoxide, water, and peroxodisulfate to generate carboxylic acids. Cyclohexane and propane were used as model cyclic and gaseous alkanes, while the substrate scope also included cyclopentane, cycloheptane, and cyclooctane. Different reaction parameters were investigated, including an effect of the acid cocatalyst and various selectivity parameters. The obtained total product yields (up to 34% based on C₃H₈ or up to 47% based on C₆H₁₂) in the carboxylation of propane and cyclohexane are remarkable taking into account an inertness of these saturated hydrocarbons and low reaction temperatures (50-60 °C). Apart from notable catalytic activity, this study showcases a novel time-dependent synthetic strategy for the self-assembly of two different Cu(II) compounds from the same reaction mixture.

Diversity of Luminescent Metal Complexes in OLEDs: Beyond Traditional Precious Metals

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent properties, such as self-luminosity, high color gamut and flexibility, and potential applications in display, wearable devices and lighting. The emitters are the most important composition in OLEDs, mainly classified into fluorescent compounds (first generation), metal phosphorescent complexes (second generation), and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials (third generation). In this review, we summarize the advances of novel emitters of organic metal complexes in the last decade, focusing on coinage metals (Cu, Ag, and Au) and non-precious metals (Al, Zn, W, and alkali metal). Also, the design strategy of d¹⁰ and Au(III) complexes was discussed. We aim to provide guidance for exploring efficient metal complexes beyond traditional phosphorescent complexes.

Coordination-induced emission enhancement in copper(I) iodide coordination polymers supported by 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidines

First examples of copper(i) complexes with 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands have been synthesized. Reactions of copper(i) iodide with 2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L1) in various metal-to-ligand molar ratios in MeCN afford a ladder-type coordination polymer [Cu2L1I2]n with polymeric chains built from double-stranded (Cu2I2)n ribbons supported on both sides by μ2-N,S-L1 molecules. Although the second ligand, 2-(ethylsulfanyl)pyrimidine (L2), differs from L1 only by a methylene group, its reactions with copper(i) iodide in MeCN yield not only a congenerous coordination polymer, [Cu2L2I2]n, but also [CuL2I]n, in which a similar (Cu2I2)n ribbon is decorated by N-monodentate L2 molecules. Absorption spectra of all compounds represent an interplay of metal + iodine-to-ligand charge transfer (XMLCT) and ligand-centered (LC) and cluster-centered (CC) transitions, while the emission occurs from the excited states of XMLCT nature. The luminescence of [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n is blue-shifted and greatly enhanced in comparison with that of [CuL2I]n (quantum yields: 89% and 68% for [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]nvs. 23% for [CuL2I]n at 77 K), which can be associated with a more rigid μ2-N,S coordination of 2-(alkylsulfanyl)pyrimidine ligands in [Cu2L1I2]n and [Cu2L2I2]n leading to a less distorted T1 state.

Through-Space Charge Transfer in Copper Coordination Networks with Copper-Halide Guest Anions

We prepared coordination networks that show relatively strong emission with through-space charge-transfer (TSCT) transitions. Thermolysis of a kinetically assembled network with Cu₂Br₂ dimer connectors, which was assembled from a CuBr cluster and the T_d ligand 4-4-tetrapyridyltetraphenylmethane (4-TPPM), generated a highly luminescent network composed of Cu⁺ connectors and 4-TPPM linkers with CuBr₂^- guests. We clarified that the electronic transitions in this network include TSCT in addition to the typical metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) observed in conventional Cu complexes.
