Abstract
The D2h symmetrical 1,3,4,6-tetraphenylpentalenide is an excellent ligand for the stabilisation of strongly coloured bis(pentalenide) LnIII sandwich complexes. These easily accessible compounds complement previously reported lanthanide organometallics and provide new opportunities to understand the roles of the f-orbitals in electronic structure and bonding.

Abstract
Here we report the first example of systematic tuning of the electronic properties of dianionic pentalenides through a straightforward synthetic protocol which allows the controlled variation of substituents in the 1,3,4,6-positions to produce nine new compounds, representing the largest pentalenide study to date. Both electron-withdrawing as well as electron-donating aromatics have been incorporated to achieve different polarisations of the bicyclic 10π aromatic core as indicated by characteristic 1H and 13C NMR shifts and evaluated by DFT calculations including nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) scans, anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) calculations, and natural bond orbital (NBO) charge distribution analysis. The introduction of methyl substituents to the pentalenide core required positional control in the dihydropentalene precursor to avoid exocyclic deprotonation during the metalation. Frontier orbital analyses showed arylated pentalenides to be slightly weaker donors but much better acceptor ligands than unsubstituted pentalenide. The coordination chemistry potential of our new ligands has been exemplified by the straightforward synthesis of a polarised anti-dirhodium(i) complex.

Abstract
The application of Mg[Ph4Pn] and Li·K[Ph4Pn] in transmetalation reactions to a range of Rh(I) precursors led to the formation of "half-baguette" anti-[RhI(L)n]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] (L = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, norbornadiene, ethylene; n = 1, 2) and syn-[RhI(CO)2]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] complexes as well as the related iridium complex anti-[IrI(COD)]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn]. With CO exclusive syn metalation was obtained even when using mono-nuclear Rh(I) precursors, indicating an electronic preference for syn metalation. DFT analysis showed this to be the result of π overlap between the adjacent M(CO)2 units which overcompensates for dz2 repulsion of the metals, an effect which can be overridden by steric clash of the auxiliary ligands to yield anti-configuration as seen in the larger olefin complexes. syn-[RhI(CO)2]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] is a rare example of a twinned organometallic where the two metals are held flexibly in close proximity, but the two d8 Rh(I) centres did not show signs of M-M bonding interactions or exhibit Lewis basic behaviour as in some related mono-nuclear Cp complexes due to the acceptor properties of the ligands. The ligand substitution chemistry of syn-[RhI(CO)2]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] was investigated with a series of electronically and sterically diverse donor ligands (P(OPh)3, P(OMe)3, PPh3, PMe3, dppe) yielding new mono- and bis-substituted complexes, with E-syn-[RhI(CO)(P{OR})3]2[μ:η5:η5Ph4Pn] (R = Me, Ph) characterised by XRD.

Abstract
The first magnesium pentalenide complexes have been synthesized via deprotonative metalation of 1,3,4,6-tetraphenyldihydropentalene (Ph4PnH2) with magnesium alkyls. Both the nature of the metalating agent and the reaction solvent influenced the structure of the resulting complexes, and an equilibrium between Mg[Ph4Pn] and [nBuMg]2[Ph4Pn] was found to exist and investigated by NMR, XRD, and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. Studies on the reactivity of Mg[Ph4Pn] with water, methyl iodide, and trimethylsilylchloride revealed that the [Ph4Pn]2- unit undergoes electrophilic addition at 1,5-positions instead of 1,4-positions known for the unsubstituted pentalenide, Pn2-, highlighting the electronic influence of the four aryl substituents on the pentalenide core. The ratio of syn/anti addition was found to be dependent on the size of the incoming electrophile, with methylation yielding a 60:40 mixture, while silylation yielded exclusively the anti-isomer.

Abstract
The development of electron-accepting units is of significant importance because the construction of donor (D)-acceptor (A) configurations is an effective strategy for tuning the electronic properties of π-conjugated systems. Although doubly fused pentagons represented by diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) have been used as an effective electron-accepting unit, the relatively high-lying frontier molecular orbital levels (FMOs) leave room for further improvement. We report herein the synthesis of a fluorinated dihydropentalene-1,4-dione (FPD) derivative as a strong electron-accepting unit and the development of D-A-D π-extended molecules. X-ray analyses revealed that the presence of fluorine atoms contributed to the formation of high planar structures and slipped-stacked packing. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the FPD derivatives showed relatively lower FMO energy levels than the corresponding DPP-containing derivatives. The D-A-D molecule based on terthiophene and FPD showed semiconducting responses. This study demonstrates that the FPD unit can function as a new acceptor unit for organic semiconductors.

Abstract
In search of novel pentalenide ligands for use in organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis, we report the scope of a straightforward base-promoted Michael annulation of cyclopentadienes with α,β-unsaturated ketones that allows the introduction of symmetrical as well as unsymmetrical aryl and alkyl substitution patterns including electron-donating as well as electron-withdrawing substituents. More than 16 examples of various isomers of 1,3,4,6-tetraarylated dihydropentalenes have been synthesized in isolated yields of up to 78%, representing a substantial expansion of the range of dihydropentalene scaffolds known to date. Double bond isomerization between the two pentacyclic rings in 1,2-dihydropentalenes with electronically different substituents occurred depending on the polarization of the molecule. The melting points of the air-stable dihydropentalenes decrease, and their solubilities in organic solvents improve with increasing substitution and decreasing symmetry of the molecule. A competitive pseudo-retro-aldol pathway produces 1,3,6-triarylated monocyclic pentafulvenes as side products in yields of 9-68%, which can be cleanly isolated (8 new examples) and used for other synthetic purposes, including separate cyclization to other dihydropentalenes.

Abstract
Metallocenes represent one of the most important classes of organometallics with wide prospects for practical use in various fields of chemistry, materials science, molecular electronics, and biomedicine. Many applications of these metal complexes are based on their ability to form molecular ions. We report the first results concerning the changes in the molecular and electronic structure of decamethylmanganocene, Cp*2Mn, upon ionization provided by the high-resolution mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations. The precise ionization energy of Cp*2Mn is determined as 5.349 ± 0.001 eV. The DFT modeling of the MATI spectrum shows that the main structural deformations accompanying the detachment of an electron consist in the elongation of the Mn-C bonds and a change in the Me out-of-plane bending angles. Surprisingly, the DFT calculations predict that most of the reduction in electron density (ED) upon ionization is associated with the hydrogen atoms of the substituents, despite the metal character of the ionized orbital. However, the ED difference isosurfaces reveal a complex mechanism of the charge redistribution involving also the carbon atoms of the molecule.

Abstract
Transition-metal sandwich complexes play key roles in various fields such as fundamental and applied chemistry; many of their unique properties arise from their ability to form stable or reactive ions. The first mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectra of mixed sandwich compounds, (Ch)(Cp)Cr and (Cot)(Cp)Ti (Ch = η7-C7H7, Cp = η5-C5H5, Cot = η8-C8H8), presented in this work provide an extremely accurate description of the electron detachment. The ionization energies of the neutrals and stabilization energies of the metal-ligand interactions upon ionization are derived from the MATI data with an accuracy of 0.0006 eV. In combination with DFT calculations, laser threshold ionization spectroscopy reveals surprisingly different structural variations accompanying the detachment of the non-bonding dz2 electron from the sandwich molecules. The geometry of (Ch)(Cp)Cr remains practically unchanged while the ionization of (Cot)(Cp)Ti causes a noticeable shortening of the inter-ring distance, similar to that resulting from the ionization of a typical antibonding orbital. Electron density analysis throws light on the nature of these amazing effects.

Abstract
AbstractMetal-mediated [2+2+2] cycloadditions of unsaturated molecules to cyclic and polycyclic organic compounds are a versatile synthetic route affording good yields and selectivity under mild conditions. In the last two decades, in silico investigations have unveiled important details about the mechanism and the energetics of the whole catalytic cycle. Particularly, a number of computational studies address the topic of half-sandwich catalysts which, due to their structural fluxionality, have been widely employed, since the 1980s. In these organometallic species, the metal is coordinated to an aromatic ring, typically the ubiquitous cyclopentadienyl anion, C5H5
–(Cp) or to the Cp moiety of a larger polycyclic aromatic ligand (Cp′). During the catalytic process, the metal continuously ‘slips’ on the ring, changing its hapticity. This phenomenon of metal slippage and its implications for the catalyst’s performance are discussed in this work, referring to the most important computational mechanistic studies reported in literature for Rh(I) half-metallocenes, with the purpose of providing hints for a rational design of this class of compounds.1 Introduction2 Mechanism of Metal-Catalyzed Acetylene [2+2+2] Cycloaddition to Benzene and the Problem of the Indenyl Effect2.1 Acetylene-Acetonitrile [2+2+2] Co-cycloaddition to 2-Methylpyridine: Evidence of the Indenyl Effect2.2 Heteroaromatic Catalysts and the Evidence of a Reverse Indenyl Effect2.3 Booth’s Mechanistic Hypothesis and the Evidence of the Indenyl Effect3 Structure–Reactivity Correlation: The Slippage-Span Model4 Conclusions and Perspectives

Abstract
The synthesis and application of compounds with Cr-Cr and V-V d-d quintuple bonds (σ, 2π, 2δ) have led to new thinking about whether d-d multiple bonds also exist between early transition metals such as Sc-Sc and Ti-Ti. In this study, by extensive unbiased global search at the density functional theory level, the low-energy structures of 26e and 30e TM2Lin clusters were obtained. Based on the super valence bond (SVB) theory, the prolate double-core structure of TM2Lin clusters was regarded as a superatomic molecule, of which each half was regarded as an open-shell superatom, and the electronic shell-closure was realized by forming multiple bonds between superatoms. Then, the quintuple super bonds (2δ, 2π, σ) of the Li18Ti2, Li20Sc2, [Li17V2]+, [Li17Ti2]- clusters and the triple super bonds (2π, σ) of the Li24Sc2 and Li24Y2 clusters were confirmed via chemical-bonding analysis. This way of forming multiple bonds between early transition metals through superatomic bonding has promoted the experimental synthesis and application of early transition metal multiple bond compounds.

Abstract
The π coordination of arene and anionic heteroarene ligands is a ubiquitous bonding motif in the organometallic chemistry of d-block and f-block elements. By contrast, related π interactions of neutral heteroarenes including neutral bora-π-aromatics are less prevalent particularly for the f-block, due to less effective metal-to-ligand backbonding. In fact, π complexes with neutral heteroarene ligands are essentially unknown for the actinides. We have now overcome these limitations by exploiting the exceptionally strong π donor capabilities of a neutral 1,4-diborabenzene. A series of remarkably robust, π-coordinated thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) half-sandwich complexes were synthesized by simply combining the bora-π-aromatic with ThCl4 (dme)2 or UCl4 , representing the first examples of actinide complexes with a neutral boracycle as sandwich-type ligand. Experimental and computational studies showed that the strong actinide-heteroarene interactions are predominately electrostatic in nature with distinct ligand-to-metal π donation and without significant π/δ backbonding contributions.

Abstract
Recent advances on substituent effects in transition metal bisarene complexes studied with high-resolution threshold ionization spectroscopy are reviewed to demonstrate new aspects of the ligand influence on electronic structures of sandwich molecules. Unprecedented accuracy in the determination of ionization energies provided by the laser techniques makes it possible to reveal and describe quantitatively such fine phenomena as isotope effects, the mutual substituent influence or variations of substituent effects on replacing the central metal atom with its Group analogues. In combination with DFT calculations, laser ionization spectroscopy unveils mechanisms of the ligand influence on unique redox properties of sandwich complexes which are of key importance for their practical use.

Abstract
The 1 : 1 reactions of uranium(iv) tetrakis(borohydride) with the sodium and potassium salts of the cyclobutadienyl anion [C4(SiMe3)4]2- (Cb'''') produce the half-sandwich complexes [Na(12-crown-4)2][U(η4-Cb'''')(BH4)3] and [U(η4-Cb'''')(μ-BH4)3{K(THF)2}]2. In the 1 : 2 reaction of U(BH4)4 with Na2Cb'''', formation of [U(η4-Cb'''')(η3-C4H(SiMe3)3-κ-(CH2SiMe2)(BH4))]- reveals that a Cb'''' ligand undergoes an intramolecular deprotonation, resulting in an allyl/tuck-in bonding mode. A computational study reveals that the uranium-Cb'''' bonding has an appreciable covalent component with contributions from the uranium 5f and 6d orbitals.

Abstract
We report a series of anti-bimetallic transition metal complexes based on the permethylpentanyl (Pn*, C8Me6) ligand: anti-(MCpR5)2Pn* (where M = Fe, Co and Ni and R = H or Me). Compounds (FeCp*)2Pn* (1), (CoCp*)2Pn* (2), (NiCp*)2Pn* (3), (CoCp)2Pn* (4) and (NiCp)2Pn* (5) were fully characterised by NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, DFT calculations and cyclic voltammetry. All anti-(MCpR5)Pn* structures have diamagnetic ground states. 1, 2 and 4 have isolated non-degenerate ground states with closed shell configurations. A study of the magnetic properties of the dinickel complexes 3 and 5 reveal Boltzmann population of a Curie triplet state in the solution. Cyclic voltammetry reveals multiple reversible or quasi-reversible redox couples for all the dinuclear complexes.

Abstract
Recent developments and results from the organometallic chemistry of the actinides are reviewed. In the last one and a half years the structural data of about 15 organometallic complexes of transuranium actinides (Np or Pu) have been published, all involving π-ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal ion. On the basis of these data, a comparison of these molecules is presented. Depending on the steric demands of the ligands, effects like the actinide contraction seem to be stronger or weaker in the structural features. This indicates that the interplay between the actinide ion and the π-ligand is rather flexible, enabling the formation of stable bonds over a broad range of actinide ion oxidation states.

Abstract
While a number of reports have established the unique structures and electronic properties of mono- and dinuclear pentalenide complexes of s, p, d and f block elements, access to these intriguing compounds is restricted by synthetic challenges. Here we review various strategies for the synthesis, functionalisation and (trans)metalation of pentalenide complexes from a practical point of view, pointing out promising avenues for future research that may allow wider access to novel pentalenide complexes for application in many different areas.

Abstract
The potassium cyclobutadienyl [K2 {η4 -C4 (SiMe3 )4 }] (1) reacts with MCl3 (THF)3.5 (M=Y, Dy) to give the first rare-earth cyclobutadienyl complexes, that is, the complex anions [M{η4 -C4 (SiMe3 )4 }{η4 -C4 (SiMe3 )3 -κ-(CH2 SiMe2 }]2- , (2M ), as their dipotassium salts. The tuck-in alkyl ligand in 2M is thought to form through deprotonation of the "squarocene" complexes [M{η4 -C4 (SiMe3 )4 }2 ]- by 1. Complex 2Dy is a single-molecule magnet, but with prominent quantum tunneling. An anisotropy barrier of 323(22) cm-1 was determined for 2Dy in an applied field of 1 kOe, and magnetic hysteresis loops were observed up to 7 K.

Abstract
The amide in Cr[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 is displaced by equimolar [K(18-crown-6)][naphthalene] to form the dimetal sandwich Cr2(naphthalene)2- as a radical anion paired with [K(18-crown-6)]+. Two Cr atoms in the sandwich do not form any multiple Cr/Cr bonds, and instead each interacts with one naphthalene in an η6 fashion and with the second naphthalene in an η4 connectivity mode. The naphthalene C/C distances show the effect of back donation from two chromium atoms to a greater extent than simply by 1 electron ring reduction, in comparison to the naphthalene radical anion. The SOMO of the product was established by variable temperature EPR spectroscopy, and the atom ratios and elemental purity were supported by XPS. The possible generality of the displacement of N(SiMe3)2- from a low valent metal is discussed.

Abstract
Reduction of a permethylpentalene zirconium(iv) chloride complex [η8-Pn*Zr(μ-Cl)3/2]2(μ-Cl)2Li·THFx with KC8 in benzene results in activation of the aromatic solvent to yield an "inverted sandwich" complex, [η8-Pn*Zr]2(μ-η6:η6-C6H6) (1). The reactions in toluene, cumene, o-xylene and m-xylene also yield analogous solvent activated triple-decker sandwich complexes, which have been structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Edge energies in the Zr K-edge XANES spectra are not distinguishable between 1 and formally Zr(ii) and Zr(iv) reference compounds, suggesting a broad edge structure. DFT calculations best describe the bonding in 1 as highly covalent with frontier molecular orbitals showing almost equal contributions from benzene and the Zr-permethylpentalene fragments.
