Molecular magnetism, quo vadis? A historical perspective from a coordination chemist viewpoint☆

Antiferromagnetic Interactions through the Thirteen Å Metal-Metal Distances in Heterometallic One-Dimensional Chains

A heterometallic and paramagnetic one-dimensional aligned chain in -Rh(+2)-Rh(+2)- Pt(+2)-Ni(+2)-Pt(+2)- with direct metal-metal bonds was obtained via HOMO-LUMO interactions at the σ* (dz2) orbital between [Rh2(O2CCH3)4] and [Pt2Ni(piam)4(NH3)4] (piam=pivalamidate). The one-dimensional chains had straight backbones attributed to face-to-face stacking of each complex, and the Ni atoms were separated by approximately 13 Å from four different metals. Each Ni atom had two unpaired electrons in the d-orbitals, which strongly exchanged with J=-37.9 cm-1 through the diamagnetic -Pt-Rh-Rh-Pt- bonds.

Field-Induced Slow Magnetization Relaxation of a Tetrahedral S=2 FeIIS4-Containing Complex

In the work described herein, the spin relaxation properties of the mononuclear tetrahedral S=2 [Fe{(SPiPr2)2N}2] complex (1) were studied by employing static and dynamic magnetic measurements at liquid helium temperatures. In the absence of an external direct current (DC) magnetic field, 1 exhibits fast magnetization relaxation. However, in the presence of external magnetic fields of a few kOe, slow relaxation is induced as monitored by alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 10 kHz, in the temperature range 2-5 K. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the corresponding relaxation time reveals contributions by Quantum Tunnelling of Magnetization, and the Direct and Orbach processes in the magnetization relaxation mechanism of 1. The energy barrier, Ueff, of the Orbach process, as determined by this analysis, is compared with that related to the zero-field splitting parameters of 1 which were previously determined by high- frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance and Mössbauer spectroscopies.

Spin-Flip via Subtle Electronic Perturbation in Axially Ligated Diiron(III) Porphyrin Dimer

Spin state switching in the metal center is a crucial phenomenon in many enzymatic reactions in biology. The spin state alteration, a critical step in cytochrome P450 catalysis, is driven most likely through a weak perturbation upon substrate binding in the enzyme, which is still not well clarified. In the current work, the spin state transition of iron(III) from high to intermediate via an admixed state is observed upon a subtle electronic perturbation to the sulphonate moieties coordinated axially to a diiron(III)porphyrin dimer. While electron-donating substituents stabilize the high-spin state of iron(III), strongly electron-withdrawing groups stabilize an intermediate-spin state, whereas the moderate electron-withdrawing nature of axial ligands resulted in an admixed state. Confirmation of the molecular structures and their spin states have been made utilizing single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, Mössbauer, magnetic, EPR, and 1H NMR spectroscopic investigations. The position of the signals of the porphyrin macrocycle in the paramagnetic 1H NMR is found to be very characteristic of the spin state of the iron center in solution. The Curie plot for the pure high-spin complexes shows the signals' temperature dependency in line with the Curie law. Conversely, the pure intermediate-spin state of iron exhibits an anti-Curie temperature dependence, whereas the admixed-spin state of iron displays significant curvature of the lines in the Curie plot. An extensive DFT analysis displays a linear dependence between the energy difference between dx 2 - y 2 ${{_{x{^{2}}- y{^{2}}}}}$ and dz 2 ${{_{z{^{2}}}}}$ orbital versus Fe-Npor distance for the complexes reported here. Furthermore, a strong linear correlation between the Fe-O distance and the spin density over the oxygen atom, as well as the Fe-Npor distance for the complexes, has been observed. Thus, a slight electronic perturbation at the axial ligand of the diheme resulted in a large change in the electronic structures with a spin-flip. This is at par with the metalloenzymes, which employ minute perturbations around the periphery of the active sites, leading to spin state transitions.

How the spin state tunes the slow magnetic relaxation field dependence in spin crossover cobalt(II) complexes

A novel family of cobalt(II) compounds with tridentate pyridine-2,6-diiminephenyl type ligands featuring electron-withdrawing substituents of general formula [Co(n-XPhPDI)2](ClO4)2·S [n-XPhPDI = 2,6-bis(N-n-halophenylformimidoyl)pyridine with n = 4 (1-3) and 3 (4); X = I (1), Br (2 and 4) and Cl (3); S = MeCN (1 and 2) and EtOAc (3)] has been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic measurements combined with theoretical calculations. The structures of 1-4 consist of mononuclear bis(chelating) cobalt(II) complex cations, [CoII(n-XPhPDI)2]2+, perchlorate anions, and acetonitrile (1 and 2) or ethyl acetate (3) molecules of crystallisation. This unique series of mononuclear six-coordinate octahedral cobalt(II) complexes displays both thermally-induced low-spin (LS)/high-spin (HS) transition and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in both LS and HS states. A complete LS ↔ HS transition occurs for 1 and 2, while it is incomplete for 4, one-third of the complexes being HS at low temperatures. In contrast, 3 remains HS in all the temperature range. 1 and 2 show dual spin relaxation dynamics under the presence of an applied dc magnetic field (Hdc), with the occurrence of faster- (FR) and slower-relaxing (SR) processes at lower (Hdc = 1.0 kOe) and higher fields (Hdc = 2.5 kOe), respectively. On the contrary, 3 and 4 exhibit only SR and FR relaxations, regardless of Hdc. Overall, the distinct field-dependence of the single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour along with this family of spin-crossover (SCO) cobalt(II)-n-XPhPDI complexes is dominated by Raman mechanisms and, occasionally, with additional temperature-independent Intra-Kramer [LS or HS (D > 0)] or Quantum Tunneling of Magnetisation mechanisms [HS (D < 0)] also contributing.

Photo-induced valence tautomerism and polarization switching in mononuclear cobalt complexes with an enantiopure chiral ligand

Light-induced polarization switchable molecular materials have attracted attention for decades owing to their potential remote manipulation and ultrafast responsiveness. Here we report a valence tautomeric (VT) complex with an enantiopure chiral ligand. By a suitable choice of counter anions, a significant improvement in photoconversion has been demonstrated, leading to novel photo-responsive polarization switching materials.

{GdIII7} and {GdIII14} Cluster Formation Based on a Rhodamine 6G Ligand with a Magnetocaloric Effect

Heptanuclear {GdIII7} (complex 1) and tetradecanuclear {GdIII14} (complex 2) were synthesized using the rhodamine 6G ligand HL (rhodamine 6G salicylaldehyde hydrazone) and characterized. Complex 1 has a rare disc-shaped structure, where the central Gd ion is connected to the six peripheral GdIII ions via CH3O-/μ3-OH- bridges. Complex 2 has an unexpected three-layer double sandwich structure with a rare μ6-O2- ion in the center of the cluster. Magnetic studies revealed that complex 1 exhibits a magnetic entropy change of 17.4 J kg-1 K-1 at 3 K and 5 T. On the other hand, complex 2 shows a higher magnetic entropy change of 22.3 J kg-1 K-1 at 2 K and 5 T.

Hexaguanidino-Triptycenes and Triphenylenes: Electronic Coupling in Molecules Containing Three Redox-Active o-Diguanidinobenzene Units Connected either Directly or Interacting Through Homoconjugation

Novel redox-active hexaguanidine molecules with multiple redox states were synthesized by connecting three o-diguanidinobenzene units. In 2,3,6,7,14,15-hexaguanidino-triptycenes, the three redox-active o-diguanidinobenzene units are connected through C-C bonds to the sp3 -hybridized bridgehead C atoms, and in 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaguanidino-triphenylenes they are directly connected. The connectivity difference leads to different electronic coupling between the three redox-active o-diguanidinobenzene units, with homoconjugation being present in the triptycene, but not in the triphenylene compounds. Motivated by the appearance of an intense low-energy electronic transition, we especially analysed the effect of homoconjugation on the electronic structure and charge delocalization in the dicationic redox state of the triptycene derivatives. Then, several trinuclear high-spin cobalt (and copper) complexes were synthesized with the triphenylene and triptycene ligands, and the magnetic coupling and redox properties analysed. By choice of the coligands (hexafluoroacetylacetonate, trifluoroacetylacetonate and acetylacetonate), oxidation could be switched between metal- and ligand-centered redox events, leading to drastic changes in the magnetic or optical properties, especially as a consequence of homoconjugation in the triptycene derivatives.

Synthesis, crystal structure and properties of poly[(μ-2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide-κ2O:O)bis-(μ-thio-cyanato-κ2N:S)cobalt(II)]

The title compound, [Co(NCS)2(C6H7NO)]n or Co(NCS)2(2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide), was prepared by the reaction of Co(NCS)2 and 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide in methanol. All crystals obtained by this procedure show reticular pseudo-merohedric twinning, but after recrystallization, one crystal was found that had a minor component with only a very few overlapping reflections. The asymmetric unit consists of one CoII cation, two thio-cyanate anions and one 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide coligand in general positions. The CoII cations are octa-hedrally coordinated by two O-bonding 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide ligands, as well as two S- and two N-bonding thio-cyanate anions, and are connected via μ-1,3(N,S)-bridging thio-cyanate anions into chains that are linked by μ-1,1(O,O) bridging coligands into layers. No pronounced directional inter-molecular inter-actions are observed between the layers. The 2-methyl-pyridine coligand is disordered over two orientations and was refined using a split model with restraints. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) indicates that a pure sample was obtained and IR spectroscopy confirms that bridging thio-cyanate anions are present. Thermogravimetry and differential thermoanalysis (TG-DTA) shows one poorly resolved mass loss in the TG curve that is accompanied by an exothermic and an endothermic signal in the DTA curve, which indicate the decomposition of the 2-methyl-pyridine N-oxide coligands.

pH-Switching of the luminescent, redox, and magnetic properties in a spin crossover cobalt(ii) molecular nanomagnet

The ability of mononuclear first-row transition metal complexes as dynamic molecular systems to perform selective functions under the control of an external stimulus that appropriately tunes their properties may greatly impact several domains of molecular nanoscience and nanotechnology. This study focuses on two mononuclear octahedral cobalt(ii) complexes of formula {[CoII(HL)2][CoII(HL)L]}(ClO4)3·9H2O (1) and [CoIIL2]·5H2O (2) [HL = 4'-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine], isolated as a mixed protonated/hemiprotonated cationic salt or a deprotonated neutral species. This pair of pH isomers constitutes a remarkable example of a dynamic molecular system exhibiting reversible changes in luminescence, redox, and magnetic (spin crossover and spin dynamics) properties as a result of ligand deprotonation, either in solution or solid state. In this last case, the thermal-assisted spin transition coexists with the field-induced magnetisation blockage of "faster" or "slower" relaxing low-spin CoII ions in 1 or 2, respectively. In addition, pH-reversible control of the acid-base equilibrium among dicationic protonated, cationic hemiprotonated, and neutral deprotonated forms in solution enhances luminescence in the UV region. Besides, the reversibility of the one-electron oxidation of the paramagnetic low-spin CoII into the diamagnetic low-spin CoIII ion is partially lost and completely restored by pH decreasing and increasing. The fine-tuning of the optical, redox, and magnetic properties in this novel class of pH-responsive, spin crossover molecular nanomagnets offers fascinating possibilities for advanced multifunctional and multiresponsive magnetic devices for molecular spintronics and quantum computing such as pH-effect spin quantum transformers.

Two Discoveries in One Crystal: σ-Type Oxime Radical as an Unforeseen Building Block in Molecular Magnetics and Its Spatial Structure

In the present work, the study of the unusual interaction between copper hexafluoroacetylacetonate and the diacetyliminoxyl radical resulted in two discoveries from different fields: the determination of the oxime radical spatial structure and the introduction of an oxime radical into the field of molecular magnetic material design. Oxime radicals are key plausible intermediates in the processes of oxidative CH-functionalization and in the synthesis of functionalized isoxazolines from oximes. Due to the lack of X-ray diffraction data for oxime radicals, the knowledge about their structure is based mainly on indirect approaches, spectroscopic methods (electron paramagnetic resonance and IR), and quantum chemical calculations. The structure of the oxime radical was determined for the first time by stabilizing the diacetyliminoxyl radical in the form of its complex with copper (II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate (Cu(hfac)₂), followed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Although oxime radicals are known to undergo oxidative coupling with acetylacetonate ligands in transition-metal complexes, a complex is formed with intact hfac ligands. X-ray diffraction studies have shown that the oxime radical is coordinated with copper ions through the oxygen atoms of the carbonyl groups without the direct involvement of the C═N-O^• radical moiety. The structure of the coordinated diacetyliminoxyl is in good agreement with the density functional theory (DFT) prediction for free diacetyliminoxyl due to the very weak interaction of the radical molecule with copper ions. Remarkably, both weak ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between Cu (II) and oxime radicals have been revealed by modeling the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and confirmed by DFT calculations, rendering diacetyliminoxyl a promising building block for the design of molecular magnets.

Lipoic Acid-Functionalized Hexanuclear Manganese(III) Nanomagnets Suitable for Surface Grafting

Highly anisotropic single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have attracted much interest in the field of molecular magnetism because of their spin features and potential technological applications. Additionally, a great effort has been devoted to the functionalization of such molecule-based systems which are made with ligands containing functional groups suitable to connect SMMs to junction devices or to perform their grafting on surfaces of different substrates. We have synthesized and characterized two lipoic acid-functionalized and oxime-based Mn(III) compounds, of formula [Mn₆(μ₃-O)₂(H₂N-sao)₆(lip)₂(MeOH)₆][Mn₆(μ₃-O)₂(H₂N-sao)₆(cnph)₂(MeOH)₆]}·10MeOH (1) and [Mn₆(μ₃-O)₂(H₂N-sao)₆(lip)₂(EtOH)₆]·EtOH·2H₂O (2) [H₂N-saoH₂ = salicylamidoxime, lip = lipoate anion, cnph = 2-cyanophenolate anion]. Compound 1 crystallizes in the space group Pī of the triclinic system and 2 crystallizes in the space group C2/c of the monoclinic system. In the crystal, neighboring Mn₆ entities are linked using non-coordinating solvent molecules, which are H-bonded to N atoms of -NH₂ groups of amidoxime ligand. In addition, Hirshfeld surfaces of 1 and 2 were calculated to study the variety of intermolecular interactions and the different levels of importance that take place in their crystal lattice; this type of computed study is the first time performed on Mn₆ complexes. The study of the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 through dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange couplings between the Mn(III) metal ions in both compounds, the latter being the predominant magnetic interaction. A spin S = 4 value of the ground state was obtained using isotropic simulations of the experimental magnetic susceptibility data for both 1 and 2. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show features typical of slow relaxation of the magnetization in 1 and 2, which indicate that SMM behavior takes place in both compounds.

Understanding the Exchange Interaction between Paramagnetic Metal Ions and Radical Ligands: DFT and Ab Initio Study on Semiquinonato Cu(II) Complexes

The exchange coupling, represented by the J parameter, is of tremendous importance in understanding the reactivity and magnetic behavior of open-shell molecular systems. In the past, it was the subject of theoretical investigations, but these studies are mostly limited to the interaction between metallic centers. The exchange coupling between paramagnetic metal ions and radical ligands has hitherto received scant attention in theoretical studies, and thus the understanding of the factors governing this interaction is lacking. In this paper, we use DFT, CASSCF, CASSCF/NEVPT2, and DDCI3 methods to provide insight into exchange interaction in semiquinonato copper(II) complexes. Our primary objective is to identify structural features that affect this magnetic interaction. We demonstrate that the magnetic character of Cu(II)-semiquinone complexes are mainly determined by the relative position of the semiquinone ligand to the Cu(II) ion. The results can support the experimental interpretation of magnetic data for similar systems and can be used for the in-silico design of magnetic complexes with radical ligands.

Magnetic anisotropy and structural flexibility in the field-induced single ion magnets [Co{(OPPh2)(EPPh2)N}2], E = S, Se, explored by experimental and computational methods

During the last few years, a large number of mononuclear Co(II) complexes of various coordination geometries have been explored as potential single ion magnets (SIMs). In the work presented herein, the Co(II) S = 3/2 tetrahedral [Co{(OPPh2)(EPPh2)N}2], E = S, Se, complexes (abbreviated as CoO2E2), bearing chalcogenated mixed donor-atom imidodiphosphinato ligands, were studied by both experimental and computational techniques. Specifically, direct current (DC) magnetometry provided estimations of their zero-field splitting (zfs) axial (D) and rhombic (E) parameter values, which were more accurately determined by a combination of far-infrared magnetic spectroscopy and high-frequency and -field EPR spectroscopy studies. The latter combination of techniques was also implemented for the S = 3/2 tetrahedral [Co{(EPiPr2)2N}2], E = S, Se, complexes, confirming the previously determined magnitude of their zfs parameters. For both pairs of complexes (E = S, Se), it is concluded that the identity of the E donor atom does not significantly affect their zfs parameters. High-resolution multifrequency EPR studies of CoO2E2 provided evidence of multiple conformations, which are more clearly observed for CoO2Se2, in agreement with the structural disorder previously established for this complex by X-ray crystallography. The CoO2E2 complexes were shown to be field-induced SIMs, i.e., they exhibit slow relaxation of magnetization in the presence of an external DC magnetic field. Advanced quantum-chemical calculations on CoO2E2 provided additional insight into their electronic and structural properties.

Metallogels: a novel approach for the nanostructuration of single-chain magnets

In this study we demonstrate that single-chain magnets (SCMs) can be assembled in gel phase and transferred intact on surface. We take advantage of a family of SCMs based on Tb^III ions and nitronyl-nitroxides radicals functionalized with short alkyl chains known to form crystalline supramolecular nanotubes interacting with heptane acting as crystallizing solvent. When the radicals are functionalized with long aliphatic chains a robust gel is formed with similar structural and functional properties respect to its crystalline parent. Indeed, a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study unambiguously demonstrates that the gel is made of supramolecular nanotubes: the high stability of the gel allows the determination from SAXS data of precise nanotube metrics such as diameter, helical pitch and monoclinic cell of the folded 2D crystal lattice along the tube direction. Additionally, static and dynamic magnetic investigations show the persistence of the SCM behavior in the metallogel. Last, on-surface gelation provides thick films as well as sub-monolayer deposits of supramolecular nanotubes on surface as evidenced by atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. This paves the road toward magnetic materials and devices made of SCMs profiting of their isolation on surface as individual chains.

New Dinuclear Macrocyclic Copper(II) Complexes as Potentially Fluorescent and Magnetic Materials

Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes with macrocyclic Schiff bases K1 and K2 were prepared by the template reaction of (R)-(+)-1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde K1, or 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol K2 with copper(II) chloride dihydrate. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods. X-ray crystal structure determination and DFT calculations confirmed their geometry in solution and in the solid phase. Moreover, intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure of K2 were analyzed using 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and the related 2D fingerprint plots. The magnetic study revealed very strong antiferromagnetic Cu^II-Cu^II exchange interactions, which were supported by magneto-structural correlation and DFT calculations conducted within a broken symmetry (BS) framework. Complexes K1 and K2 exhibited luminescent properties that may be of great importance in the search for new OLEDs. Both K1 and K2 complexes showed emissions in the range of 392-424 nm in solutions at various polarities. Thin materials of the studied compounds were deposited on Si(111) by the spin-coating method or by thermal vapor deposition and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The thermally deposited K1 and K2 materials showed high fluorescence intensity in the range of 318-531 nm for K1/Si and 326-472 nm for the K2/Si material, indicating that they could be used in optical devices.

Overclocking Nitronyl Nitroxide Gold Derivatives in Cross-Coupling Reactions

Nitronyl nitroxides are functional building blocks in cutting-edge research fields, such as the design of molecular magnets, the development of redox and photoswitchable molecular systems and the creation of redox-active components for organic and hybrid batteries. The key importance of the nitronyl nitroxide function is to translate molecular-level-optimized structures into nano-scale devices and new technologies. In spite of great importance, efficient and versatile synthetic approaches to these compounds still represent a challenge. Particularly, methods for the direct introduction of a nitronyl nitroxide moiety into aromatic systems possess many limitations. Here, we report gold derivatives of nitronyl nitroxide that can enter Pd(0)-catalysed cross-coupling reactions with various aryl bromides, affording the corresponding functionalized nitronyl nitroxides. Based on the high thermal stability and enhanced reactivity in catalytic transformation, a new reagent is suggested for the synthesis of radical systems via a universal cross-coupling approach.

Inter-layer magnetic tuning by gas adsorption in π-stacked pillared-layer framework magnets

Magnetism of layered magnets depends on the inter-layer through-space magnetic interactions (J NNNI). Using guest sorption to address inter-layer pores in bulk-layered magnets is an efficient approach to magnetism control because the guest-delicate inter-layer distance (l trans) is a variable parameter for modulating J NNNI. Herein, we demonstrated magnetic changes induced by the adsorption of CO2, N2, and O2 gases in various isostructural layered magnets with a π-stacked pillared-layer framework, , (M = Co, 1, Fe, 2, Cr, 3; Cp* = η5-C5Me5; 2,3,5,6-F4PhCO2 - = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate; TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane). Each compound had almost identical adsorption capability for the three types of gases; only CO2 adsorption was found to have a gated profile. A breathing-like structural modulation involving the extension of l trans occurred after the insertion of gases into the isolated pores between the [Ru2]2-TCNQ ferrimagnetic layers, which is more significant for CO2 than for O2 and N2, due to the CO2-gated transition. While adsorbent 1 with M = Co (S = 0) was an antiferromagnet with T N = 75 K, 1⊃CO2 was a ferrimagnet with T C = 76 K, whereas 1⊃N2 and 1⊃O2 were antiferromagnets with T N = 68 K. The guest-insertion effect was similarly confirmed in 2 and 3, and was characteristically dependent on the type of sandwiched spin in as M = Fe (S = 1/2) and Cr (S = 3/2), respectively. This study reveals that common gases such as CO2, O2, and N2 can serve as crucial triggers for the change in magnetism as a function of variable parameter l trans.

Exploring the potential as molecular quantum-dot cellular automata of a mixed-valence Ru2 complex deposited on a Au(111) surface

A Ru2+ complex deposited on a Au(111) surface in the presence of a counterion presents excess charge localized on one side of the molecule. The switching can be promoted by an applied electric field, E, stronger than the critical field strength Ec.

Efficient Multiconfigurational Quantum Chemistry Approach to Single-Ion Magnets Based on Density Matrix Embedding Theory

Density matrix embedding theory (DMET) provides a systematic framework to combine low-level (e.g., Hartree-Fock approximation) and high-level correlated quantum chemistry methods to treat strongly correlated systems. In this work, we propose an efficient quantum embedding approach that combines DMET with the complete active space self-consistent field and subsequent state interaction treatment of spin-orbit coupling (CASSI-SO) and apply it to a theoretical description of single-ion magnets (SIMs). We have developed a novel regularized direct inversion of iterative subspace (R-DIIS) technique that ensures restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock converging to a physically correct ground state, which is found to be crucial for the efficacy of subsequent CASSI-SO calculation. The DMET+CASSI-SO approach can produce reliable zero-field splitting parameters in typical 3d-SIMs with dramatically reduced computational cost compared to its all-electron counterpart. This work therefore demonstrates the great potential of DMET-based multiconfigurational approaches for efficient ab initio study of magneto-structural correlations in complex molecular magnetic systems.

Series of Fluorinated Benzimidazole-Substituted Nitronyl Nitroxides: Synthesis, Structure, Acidity, Redox Properties, and Magnetostructural Correlations

A special series of nitronyl nitroxides was synthesized: 2-(benzimidazol-2'-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyls mono-, di-, tri-, or tetrafluorinated on the benzene ring. The structure of all paramagnets was unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was found that in crystals, the radicals are assembled into chains due to intermolecular H-bonds between the benzimidazole moiety (H-bond donor) and the nitronyl nitroxide group or benzimidazole ring (H-bond acceptor). The magnetic properties of nitronyl nitroxides depend on the type of binding of radicals by H-bonds. The magnetic motif of 4-fluoro-, 5-fluoro-, 4,6-difluoro-, 4,5,6-trifluoro-, 4,5,7-trifluoro-, and 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoro-derivatives, as well as the nonfluorinated compound, consists of ferromagnetic chains (J/k_B ≈ 20-40 K) formed by the McConnell type I mechanism. In the 5,6-difluoro- and 4,5-difluoro-derivatives, the distances between the paramagnetic centers are large, as a result of which the exchange interactions are weak. According to cyclic voltammetry, paramagnets are oxidized reversibly, while their reduction is a quasi-reversible electron transfer (EC mechanism); experimental redox potentials of radicals correlate well with the calculated values. Quantum chemical assessment of the acidity of benzimidazolyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxides revealed that the introduction of fluorine atoms into the benzene ring enhances the acidity of the paramagnets by more than 5 orders of magnitude.

Field-Induced Slow Magnetic Relaxation in CoII Cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylates

New Co^II substituted malonate field-induced molecular magnets {[Rb₆Co₃(cpdc)₆(H₂O)₁₂]∙6H₂O}_n (1) and [Cs₂Co(cpdc)₂(H₂O)₆]_n (2) (where cpdc²⁻ stands for cyclopropane-1,1-dicarboxylic acid dianions) were synthesized. Both compounds contain mononuclear bischelate fragments {Co^II(cpdc)₂(H₂O)₂}²⁻ where the quasi-octahedral cobalt environment (CoO₆) is complemented by water molecules in apical positions. The alkali metal atoms play the role of connectors between the bischelate fragments to form 3D and 2D polymeric structures for 1 and 2, respectively. Analysis of dc magnetic data using the parametric Griffith Hamiltonian for high-spin Co^II supported by ab initio calculations revealed that both compounds have an easy axis of magnetic anisotropy. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under an external magnetic field (H_DC = 1000 and 1500 Oe, respectively).

Relaxation processes in a single crystal of Co(NCS)2(4-methoxypyridine)2 spin chain

A single crystal of [Co(NCS)₂(4-methoxypyridine)₂]_n was obtained and investigated. The magnetic measurements performed along three perpendicular crystallographic directions are compared to the results obtained previously for a powder sample. The magnetic inter- and intrachain interactions do not differ, however, a change of the energy barrier of magnetic relaxations is obtained. For the single crystal sample the relaxation is much slower, which is attributed to the presence of longer chains, and show that below the ordering temperature the spin chains relax by the process that involves a single domain wall. Above the ordering temperature, a second relaxation process is observed, for which the relaxation time is temperature independent, indicating a negligible energy barrier. Such phenomenon was previously not observed for any of the powder samples of compounds from the [Co(NCS)₂(ligand)₂]_n family.

Carbon-based nanostructures as a versatile platform for tunableπ-magnetism

Emergence ofπ-magnetism in open-shell nanographenes has been theoretically predicted decades ago but their experimental characterization was elusive due to the strong chemical reactivity that makes their synthesis and stabilization difficult. In recent years, on-surface synthesis under vacuum conditions has provided unprecedented opportunities for atomically precise engineering of nanographenes, which in combination with scanning probe techniques have led to a substantial progress in our capabilities to realize localized electron spin states and to control electron spin interactions at the atomic scale. Here we review the essential concepts and the remarkable advances in the last few years, and outline the versatility of carbon-basedπ-magnetic materials as an interesting platform for applications in spintronics and quantum technologies.

Crystal Engineering and Photomagnetic Studies of CN-Bridged Coordination Polymers Based on Octacyanidometallates(IV) and [Ni(cyclam)]2

A series of new CN-bridged coordination networks of different dimensionality and topology was obtained through the modification of reaction conditions between [Ni(cyclam)]²⁺ (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) and [W(CN)₈]^4–. The factors determining the reaction pathway are temperature and addition of the LiCl electrolyte. The products include three negatively charged frameworks incorporating Li⁺ guests: the 1D Li₂[Ni(cyclam)][W(CN)₈]·6H₂O (1) straight chain, the 1D Li₂[Ni(cyclam)][W(CN)₈]·2H₂O (2) zigzag chain, and the 2D Li₂[Ni(cyclam)]₃[W(CN)₈]₂·24H₂O (3) honeycomb-like network, as well as the 3D two-fold interpenetrating [Ni(cyclam)]₅[Ni(CN)₄][W(CN)₈]₂·11H₂O (4) network and the 1D [Ni(cyclam)][Ni(CN)₄]·2H₂O (5) chain, which result from partial decomposition of the starting complexes. Together with the previously characterized 3D [Ni(cyclam)]₂[W(CN)₈]·16H₂O (6) network, they constitute the largest family of CN-bridged coordination polymers obtained from the same pair of building blocks. All compounds exhibit paramagnetic behavior because of the separation of paramagnetic nickel(II) centers through the diamagnetic polycyanidometallates. However, the presence of the photomagnetically active octacyanidotungstate(IV) ions allowed observation of the magnetic superexchange after the violet light excitation (405 nm) for compound 3, which constitutes the first example of the photomagnetic effect in a Ni^II–[W^IV(CN)₈] system. The photomagnetic investigations for fully hydrated and dehydrated sample of 3, as well as for the isostructural octacyanidomolybdate(IV)-based network are discussed.

Six coordination networks of different dimensionality and topology can be obtained from the same pair of building blocks: [Ni(cyclam)]²⁺ and [W(CN)₈]⁴⁻ depending on reaction conditions. The negatively charged 2D Li₂[Ni(cyclam)]₃[W(CN)₈]₂·nH₂O microporous network is the first example of the photomagnetic effect in a Ni^II−[W^IV(CN)₈] system.

Ferromagnetic 2p-2p and 4f-2p Couplings in a Macrocycle from Two Biradicals and Two Gadolinium(III) Ions

A new ground triplet biradical 2′,4′,6′-triisopropylbiphenyl-3,5-diyl bis(tert-butyl nitroxide) (iPr3BPBN) was prepared and characterized by means of room-temperature ESR spectroscopy displaying a zero-field splitting pattern together with a half-field signal. Complex formation with gadolinium(III) 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dionate (hfac) afforded a macrocycle [{Gd(hfac)3(μ-iPr3BPBN)}2]. As the X-ray crystallographic analysis clarified, the biradical serves as a bridging ligand, giving a 16-membered ring, where each nitroxide radical oxygen atom is directly bonded to a Gd3+ ion. The magnetic study revealed that the iPr3BPBN bridge behaved as a practically triplet biradical and that the Gd3+-radical magnetic coupling was weakly ferromagnetic. The exchange parameters were estimated as 2jrad-rad/kB > 300 K and 2JGd-rad/kB = 1.2 K in the H = −2J S1•S2 convention. The DFT calculation based on the atomic coordinates clarified the ground triplet nature in metal-free iPr3BPBN and the enhanced triplet character upon coordination. The calculation also suggests that ferromagnetic coupling would be favorable when the Gd-O-N-C(sp2) torsion comes around 100°. The present results are compatible with the proposed magneto-structure relationship on the nitroxide-Gd compounds.

Single-molecule magnet behaviour and catalytic properties of tetrahedral Co(II) complexes bearing chloride and 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole as ligands

Five cobalt(II) complexes of formula [CoCl₂(Lⁿ)₂] [1 with L1 = 1-benzyl-2-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole, 2 with L2 = 2-(furan-2-yl)-1-(furan-2-ylmethyl)-1H-benzimidazole, 3 with L3 = 1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1H-benzimidazole, 4 with L4 = 1-(2-methoxybenzyl)-2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1H-benzimidazole and 5 with L5 = 2-(thiophen-2-yl)-1-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)-1H-benzimidazole] have been synthesised, spectroscopically characterised and cryomagnetically investigated. The crystal structures of 1, 3, 4 and 5 have been determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals. Each cobalt(II) ion is four-coordinate in a distorted tetrahedral environment built by two chloride anions and two benzimidazole ligands. The neutral molecules are well separated from each other, shortest intermolecular cobalt⋯cobalt distances being greater than 9.0 Å. Static (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 2.0-300 K of 1-5 reveal the occurrence of a Curie law behaviour of magnetically non-interacting spin quadruplets in the high-temperature domain with a downturn at low temperatures due to magnetic anisotropy. The values of the D and E/D parameters for these compounds vary in the ranges -8.75 to +8.96 cm^-1 and 0.00140 to 0.23, respectively. Dynamic (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1-5 show slow magnetic relaxation in the lack (1) or under the presence (1-5) of applied dc magnetic fields, a feature which is typical of single-molecule magnet behaviour (SMM). The analysis of the ac data shows that a thermally activated Orbach relaxation mechanism dominates this behaviour. Complexes 1-5 also act as efficient and highly selective eco-friendly catalysts in the coupling reaction between CO₂ and epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates under solvent-free conditions. Under optimized reaction conditions, different epoxides were converted to the respective cyclic carbonate, with excellent conversions, using catalyst 4.

Luminescence thermometry and field induced slow magnetic relaxation based on a near infrared emissive heterometallic complex

The 1 : 1 : 1 reaction of YbCl₃·6H₂O, K₃[Co(CN)₆] and bpyO₂ in H₂O has provided access to a complex with formula [YbCo(CN)₆(bpyO₂)₂(H₂O)₃]·4H₂O (1) in a very good yield while its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and characterised based on elemental analyses and IR spectra. Magnetic susceptibility studies showed the complex to be a field induced single molecule magnet, as confirmed by μ-SQUID measurements. CASSCF calculations confirm the existence of a m_J = 7/2 ground state, with rather large transverse components, responsible for the fast relaxation characteristic of compound 1 at zero DC field, which is reduced upon application of DC fields. Moreover, a combination of luminescence studies along with CASSCF calculation allows the identification of the band structure of the complex, which is ultimately related to its electronic properties. Compound 1 operates as a luminescent thermometer in the 125-300 K range with a maximum relative thermal sensitivity of ≈0.1% K^-1 at 180 K.

Effect of Ligand Chain Length for Tuning of Molecular Dimensionality and Magnetic Relaxation in Redox Active Cobalt(II) EDOT Complexes (EDOT = 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

Four cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(L1)2(NCX)2(MeOH)2] (X = S (1), Se (2)) and {[Co(L2)2(NCX)2]}n (X = S (3), Se (4)) (L1 = 2,5dipyridyl-3,4,-ethylenedioxylthiophene and L2 = 2,5diethynylpyridinyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), were synthesized by incorporating ethylenedioxythiophene based redox-active luminescence ligands. All these complexes have been well characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, spectroscopic and magnetic investigations. Magneto-structural studies showed that 1 and 2 adopt a mononuclear structure with CoN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry while 3 and 4 have a 2D [4 x 4] rhombic grid coordination networks (CNs) where each cobalt(II) center is in a CoN6 octahedral coordination environment. Static magnetic measurements reveal that all four complexes displayed a high spin (HS) (S = 3/2) state between 2 and 280 K which was further confirmed by X-band and Q-band EPR studies. Remarkably, along with the molecular dimensionality (0D and 2D) the modification in the axial coligands lead to a significant difference in the dynamic magnetic properties of the monomers and CNs at low temperatures. All complexes display slow magnetic relaxation behavior under an external dc magnetic field. For the complexes with NCS- as coligand observed higher energy barrier for spin reversal in comparison to the complexes with NCSe- as coligand, while mononuclear complex 1 exhibited a higher energy barrier than that of CN 3. Theoretical calculations at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory have been performed to get more insight into the electronic structure and magnetic properties of all four complexes.

Impact of counter anions on spin-state switching of manganese(III) complexes containing an azobenzene ligand

Four mononuclear manganese(III) complexes coordinated with photo-active hexadentate azobenzene ligands, [Mn(5azo-sal₂-323)](X) (X = Cl, 1; X = BF₄, 2; X = ClO₄, 3; X = PF₆, 4), were prepared. The impact of various counter anions on the stabilization and switching of the spin state of the manganese(III) center was explored through detailed magneto-structural investigation using variable temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, spectroscopic, and spectroelectrochemical studies, along with theoretical calculations. All four complexes consisted of an isostructural monocationic distorted octahedral MnN₄O₂ coordination environment offered by the hexadentate ligand and Cl^-, BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, and PF₆^- as counter anions respectively. Complex 1 with a spherical Cl^- counter anion showed a reversible and gradual spin-state switching between low-spin (LS) (S = 1) and high-spin (HS) (S = 2) states above 400 K, where non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the LS state. While, irrespective of the shape of the counter anion, complexes 2-4 remained in the HS state throughout the measured temperature range of 300-2 K, where strong π-π interaction between the azobenzene motifs among cationic units played a substantial role in stabilizing the HS state. Furthermore, magnetic data analyses revealed significantly large zero-field splitting in the S = 1 state for 1 (D = 19.4 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008) in comparison with that in the S = 2 state for 2-4 (D = 3.99-4.97 cm^-1, E/D = 0.002-0.195). Spectroelectrochemical investigations revealed the quasi-reversible reduction and oxidation of the manganese(III) center to manganese(II) and manganese(IV), respectively. A detailed theoretical calculation at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory was carried out to better understand the magneto-structural correlation.

A mononuclear nine-coordinated Dy(iii) complex exhibiting field-induced single-ion magnetism behaviour

A new mononuclear Dy(iii) complex, with the formula [Dy(Hcpt)₃]·2H₂O (1), has been successfully prepared via self-assembly between Dy(iii) ions and 2-cyano-N′-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)amido)acetyl (Hcpt) ligand. X-ray diffraction study shows that the Dy(iii) ion is nine-coordinated by three Hcpt ligands with a tridentate chelating mode, leading to an approximately monocapped square-antiprismatic (C_4v) geometry. Magnetic data analysis demonstrates that 1 performs field-induced slow magnetic relaxation with a relaxation barrier of 97.90 K, due to the quantum tunneling effect suppressed upon a static dc field of 2000 Oe. To deeply understand the magnetic behaviors, the relaxation mechanisms and magneto-structure relationship are rationally discussed using ab initio calculations as well.

Reaction of Dy(iii) ion with tridentate acylhydrazone ligand leads to a field-induced Dy(iii) SIM, of which the magneto-structural correlation is elucidated by the magnetic and theoretical studies.

Trinuclear Cobalt(II) Triple Helicate with a Multidentate Bithiazolebis(oxamate) Ligand as a Supramolecular Nanomagnet

The cobalt(II)-mediated self-assembly of the potentially tris(chelating) N,N'-2,2'-(4,4'-bithiazole)bis(oxamate) (dabtzox) ligand gives a new metal-organic supramolecular nanomagnet of formula K₆Co₃(dabtzox)₃·8H₂O·MeOH (1) featuring a unique linear triple-stranded trinuclear structure of the helicate type.

One-Dimensional Gadolinium (III) Complexes Based on Alpha- and Beta-Amino Acids Exhibiting Field-Induced Slow Relaxation of Magnetization

Gadolinium (III) complexes exhibiting slow relaxation of magnetization are uncommon and have been much less studied than other compounds based on anisotropic lanthanide (III) ions. We prepared two one-dimensional gadolinium (III) complexes based on α-glycine (gly) and β-alanine (β-ala) amino acids, with the formula {[Gd2(gly)6(H2O)4](ClO4)6·5H2O}n (1) and {[Gd2(β-ala)6(H2O)4](ClO4)6·H2O}n (2), which were magneto-structurally characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system (space group Pī). In complex 1, two Gd (III) ions are eight-coordinate and bound to six oxygen atoms from six gly ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules, the metal ions showing different geometries (bicapped trigonal prism and square antiprism). In complex 2, two Gd (III) ions are nine-coordinate and bound to seven oxygen atoms from six β-ala ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules in the same geometry (capped square antiprism). Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on microcrystalline samples of 1 and 2 show similar magnetic behavior for both compounds, with antiferromagnetic coupling between the Gd (III) ions connected through carboxylate groups. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal slow relaxation of magnetization in the presence of an external dc field in both compounds, hence indicating the occurrence of the field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) phenomenon in both 1 and 2.

One-Step versus Two-Step Valence Tautomeric Transitions in Tetraoxolene-Bridged Dinuclear Cobalt Compounds

The syntheses of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands are the long-term goal of the field of bistable materials. The redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (pyrene^Q-Q), is now developed to synthesize a pair of dinuclear compounds {[CoL₂]₂(pyrene^Sq-Sq)}[Co(CO)₄]₂·xCH₂Cl₂·2C₆H₅CH₃ (1, x = 2, L = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2, x = 1.5, L = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements indicate a partial one-step valence tautomeric transition for 1 and a rare two-step valence tautomeric transition for 2, respectively. DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the one-step/two-step valence tautomeric behaviors.

Combining Open-Shell Verdazyl Environment and Co(II) Spin-Crossover: Spinmerism in Cobalt Oxoverdazyl Compound

The spin states of a Co(II) oxoverdazyl compound are investigated by means of wavefunction-based calculations. Within a ca. 233 K energy window, the ground state and excited states display a structure-sensitive admixture of low-spin SM = 1/2 in a dominant high-spin SM = 3/2 Co(II) ion as read from localized molecular orbitals. This puzzling spins zoology that results from the coupling between open-shell radical ligands and a spin-crossover metal ion gives rise to this unusual scenario which extends the views in molecular magnetism. In agreement with experimental observation, the low-energy spectroscopy is very sensitive to deformations of the coordination sphere, and a growing admixture of Co(II) low-spin is evidenced from the calculations. In analogy with mesomerism that accounts for charge delocalization, entanglement combines different local spin states to generate a given total spin multiplicity, a spinmerism phenomenon.
