Abstract
A new deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) material K0.9Rb2.1B8PO16 (KRBPO) has been designed and synthesized by adjusting the B/P molar ratio to 8:1. The KRBPO crystals were synthesized by a flux method and crystallized in noncentrosymmetric (NCS) and polar space group Cc. This compound exhibits a double-layer structure in which the A layer is composed of [B2O5] and [BO4] units and the B layer is formed by interconnected [B3O7] and [BO3] groups, and the two layers are connected by [PO4] tetrahedron. The theoretical calculations and experiments show that the synergistic interaction of π-conjugated and non-π-conjugated units leads to relatively well-balanced NLO properties of the title compound, including moderated SHG (0.7 × KDP), short UV cutoff edge (λcutoff < 190 nm), and a large band gap of 6.16 eV. Specifically, the coplanar arrangement of B-O groups in double-layer makes the KRBPO display a large birefringence (0.075@532 nm) and enables the shortest phase-matched wavelength to reach an important laser output wavelength of 266 nm.

Abstract
Heat-activated second harmonic generation (SHG) switching materials are gaining interest for their ability to switch between SHG on and off states, offering potential in optoelectronic applications. The novel nonlinear optical (NLO) switch, (C5H6NO)+(CH3SO3)- (4-hydroxypyridinium methylsulfonate, 4HPMS), is a near-room-temperature thermal driven material with a strong SHG response (3.3 × KDP), making it one of the most potent heat-stimulated NLO switches. It offers excellent contrast of 13 and a high laser-induced damage threshold (2.5 × KDP), with reversibility > 5 cycles. At 73 °C, 4HPMS transitions from the noncentrosymmetric Pna21 room temperature phase (RTP) to the centrosymmetric P21/c phase, caused by the rotation of the (C5H6NO)+ and (CH3SO3)- due to partially thermal breaking of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The reverse phase change exhibits a large 50 °C thermal hysteresis. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that (C5H6NO)+ primarily dictates both the SHG coefficient (dij) and birefringence (▵n(Zeiss) = 0.216 vs ▵n(cal.) = 0.202 at 546 nm; Δn(Immersion) = 0.210 vs ▵n(cal.) = 0.198 at 589.3 nm), while the band gap (Eg) is influenced synergistically by (C5H6NO)+ and (CH3SO3)-. Additionally, 4HPMS-RTP also exhibits mechanochromism upon grinding as well as an aggregation-enhanced emission in a mixture of acetone and water.

Abstract
A new metal methanesulfonate-derived borate compound, Na(S(OH)3CH3)(BO3) (NMSB), was successfully synthesized. NMSB crystallizes in the cubic and acentric space group P213 (no. 198) and may be grown as large, high-quality millimeter to centimeter-sized crystals through spontaneous crystallization under ambient conditions [a = 8.7714(2) Å, Z = 4]. NMSB exhibits a three-dimensional structure composed of a new methylsulfanetriol functional group, [S(OH)3CH3]2+, and extended H-bonding with planar [BO3]3- groups. The framework is formed by the Lewis acid-base reaction of SO: → HOB, structurally and charge-balanced by distorted NaO6 octahedra. The composition, structure, and facet-indices are confirmed by SC-XRD, PXRD, EDS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that NMSB is transparent in the UV-vis region with an optical absorption edge in the deep-UV region, λabs < 200 nm. NMSB is thermally stable up to 200 °C and is highly soluble in water. This new compound exhibits unique borate chemistry as well as insights into underexplored methanesulfonate-derived salts as optical materials.

Abstract
Achieving the extreme balance of the key performance requirements is the crucial to breakthrough the application bottleneck for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Herein, by assembly of the π-conjugated [B3O6] functional species with the aid of structure-directing property of mer-isomer [YO3F3] octahedra, a new ultraviolet (UV) NLO material, Cs2YB3O6F2 with aligned arrangement of coplanar [B3O6] groups has been synthesized. The polar material exhibits the rare coexistence of the largest second harmonic generation response of 5.6×KDP, the largest birefringence of 0.091 at 532 nm, the shortest Type I phase-matching down to 200.5 nm and deep-ultraviolet transparency among reported acentric rare-earth borates with [B3O6] groups. Remarkably, benefiting from the enhanced bonding force among functional units [B3O6], a firm three-dimensional framework is constructed, which facilitates the growth of large crystals. This can be proved by a block shape crystal with dimensional of 6×5×4 mm3, indicating that it was a promising UV NLO crystal. This work provides a powerful strategy to design UV NLO materials with good performances.

Abstract
Optical materials play a key role in enabling modern optoelectronic technologies in a wide variety of domains such as the medical or the energy sector. Among them, nonlinear optical crystals are of primary importance to achieve a broader range of electromagnetic waves in the devices. However, numerous and contradicting requirements significantly limit the discovery of new potential candidates, which, in turn, hinders the technological development. In the present work, the static nonlinear susceptibility and dielectric tensor are computed via density-functional perturbation theory for a set of 579 inorganic semiconductors. The computational methodology is discussed and the provided database is described with respect to both its data distribution and its format. Several comparisons with both experimental and ab initio results from literature allow to confirm the reliability of our data. The aim of this work is to provide a relevant dataset to foster the identification of promising nonlinear optical crystals in order to motivate their subsequent experimental investigation.

Abstract
Birefringence is an important linear optical property of anisotropic crystals that plays a significant role in regulating light polarization. A new bialkali-rare earth metal sulfate, NaRbY2(SO4)4 compound, consisting of non-π-conjugated alkali metals and rare earth metal-centered dodecahedral YO8 has been synthesized. The structure analysis suggests that the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the compound is found to be attributable to the combination of dodecahedral YO8 and tetrahedral SO4 groups with Na+ and Rb+ located in the cavities. The ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR) spectra reveal that the compound exhibits transparency at a wavelength of less than 200 nm. The observed birefringence of the compound is 0.045@550 nm, which is comparatively larger than that of most deep-ultraviolet (DUV) birefringent crystals. The birefringence mainly originated from the YO8 dodecahedron, which is suggested by first-principles calculations. This research work can provide a useful perspective to explore new DUV sulfates with excellent birefringence.

Abstract
Strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge are two crucial yet often conflicting parameters that must be finely tuned in the exploration of nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. In this study, two new rare earth borate NLO crystals, K7BaSc2B15O30 (KBSBO) and Rb21Sr3.8Sc5.2B45O90 (RSSBO), were rationally designed through a bifunctional primitive strategy to achieve an optimized balance between favorable SHG efficiency and UV transparency. As anticipated, both KBSBO and RSSBO exhibit a wide UV transparency window below 190 nm. Notably, these tailored crystals display strong SHG responses, with RSSBO achieving a remarkable enhancement in SHG efficiency (2 × KDP), surpassing that of most deep-UV rare earth borates containing [B5O10] groups known to date. Theoretical calculations and structural analyses reveal that the impressive SHG activities primarily stem from the [B5O10] groups and [ScO6] polyhedra. These findings suggest promising potential for KBSBO and RSSBO crystals as beryllium-free deep UV NLO materials.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are of great importance in modern optics and industry because of their intrinsic capability of wavelength conversion. Bandgap is a key property of NLO crystals. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool to predict the bandgaps of compounds before synthesis. However, the shortage of available experimental data of NLO crystals poses a significant challenge for the exploration of new NLO materials using ML. In this work, we proposed a new multi-fidelity ML approach based on the multilevel descriptors developed by us (Z.-Y. Zhang, X. Liu, L. Shen, L. Chen and W.-H. Fang, J. Phys. Chem. C, 2021, 125, 25175-25188) and the gradient boosting regression tree algorithm. The calculated and experimental bandgaps of NLO crystals were collected as the low- and high-fidelity labels, respectively. The experimental values were predicted based on chemical compositions of crystals without prior knowledge about crystal structures. The multi-fidelity ML model overcame the performance of single-fidelity predictor. Furthermore, it was observed that less accurate predictions on the low-fidelity label may result in more accurate prediction on the high-fidelity label, at least in the present case. Using the multi-fidelity ML model with the best performance in this work, the mean absolute error on the test set of experimental bandgaps was 0.293 eV, which is smaller than that using the single-fidelity model (0.355 eV). It is far from perfect but accurate enough as an effective computational tool in the first step to discover novel NLO materials.

Abstract
Combining a strong second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) effect (>1×KH2PO4 (KDP)), a large band gap (>4.2 eV), and a moderate birefringence in ultraviolet (UV) NLO crystals remains a formidable challenge. Herein, Cd(SCN)2(C4H6N2)2, the first example of a thiocyanate capable of realizing a phase-matched UV NLO crystal material, is obtained by reducing the sulfur (S) content in the centrosymmetric (CS) structure of Cd(SCN)2(CH4N2S)2. Compared to the "shoulder-to-shoulder" one-dimensional (1D) chain of Cd(SCN)2(CH4N2S)2, Cd(SCN)2(C4H6N2)2 has a different sawtooth 1D chain structure. Cd(SCN)2(CH4N2S)2 has second harmonic generation (SHG) inertia with a band gap of 3.90 eV and a UV cutoff edge of 342 nm, however, it possesses a large birefringence (0.35@546 nm). In contrast, the symmetry center breaking of Cd(SCN)2(C4H6N2)2 leads to remarkably strong SHG intensity (10 times that of KDP). Furthermore, it has a wide band gap (4.74 eV), short UV cutoff edge (234 nm), and moderate birefringence capable of phase matching (0.17@546 nm). This research indicates that thiocyanates are a promising class of UV NLO crystal materials, and that modulation of the sulfur content of CS thiocyanates is an effective strategy for the development of UV NLO crystals with excellent overall performances.

Abstract
Large birefringence is a crucial but hard-to-achieve optical parameter that is a necessity for birefringent crystals in practical applications involving modulation of the polarization of light in modern opto-electronic areas. Herein, an oxyanion polymerization strategy that involves the combination of two different types of second-order Jahn-Teller distorted units is employed to realize giant anisotropy in a covalent molybdenum tellurite. Mo(H2O)Te2O7 (MTO) exhibits a record birefringence value for an inorganic UV-transparent oxide crystalline material of 0.528 @ 546 nm, which is also significantly larger than those of all commercial birefringent crystals. MTO has a UV absorption edge of 366 nm and displays a strong powder second-harmonic generation response of 5.4 times that of KH2PO4. The dominant roles of the condensed polytellurite oxyanions [Te8O20]8- in combination with the [MoO6]6- polyhedra in achieving the giant birefringence in MTO are clarified by structural analysis and first-principles calculations. The results suggest that polymerization of polarizability-anisotropic oxyanions may unlock the promise of birefringent crystals with exceptional birefringence.

Abstract
The development of urgently-needed ultraviolet (UV)/deep-UV nonlinear optical (NLO) materials has been hindered by contradictory requirements of the microstructure, in particular the need for a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response as well as a short phase-matching (PM) wavelength. We herein employ a "de-covalency" band gap engineering strategy to adjust the optical linearity and nonlinearity. This has been achieved by assembling two types of transition-metal (TM) polyhedra ([TaO2 F4 ] and [TaF7 ]), affording the first tantalum-based deep-UV-transparent NLO materials, A5 Ta3 OF18 (A = K (KTOF), Rb (RTOF)). Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the highly ionic bonds and strong electropositivity of tantalum in the two oxyfluorides induce record short PM wavelengths (238 (KTOF) and 240 (RTOF) nm) for d0 -TM-centered oxides, in addition to strong SHG responses (2.8 × KH2 PO4 (KTOF) and 2.6 × KH2 PO4 (RTOF)), and sufficient birefringences (0.092 (KTOF) and 0.085 (RTOF) at 546 nm). These results not only broaden the available strategies for achieving deep-UV NLO materials by exploiting the currently neglected d0 -TMs, but also push the shortest PM wavelength into the short-wavelength UV region.

Abstract
We define the anisotropic structure building unit that encompasses diverse chemical bonds (ABUCB). The ABUCB is highly likely to cause anisotropy in both crystallographic structure and spatial electron distribution, ultimately resulting in enhanced macroscopic optical anisotropy. Accordingly, the (PO3F)2- or (SO3F)- tetrahedron involving the unique P-F or S-F bond serves as such an ABUCB. The distinct chemical bond effectively alters the microscopic nature of the structure building unit, such as polarizability anisotropy, hyperpolarizability, and geometry distortion; this consequently changes the macroscopic second-order nonlinear optical (2nd-NLO) properties of the materials. In this review, we summarize both typical and newly emerged compounds containing ABUCBs. These compounds encompass approximately 90 examples representing six distinct categories, including phosphates, borates, sulfates, silicates, chalcogenides and oxyhalides. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the presence of ABUCBs in DUV/UV NLO compounds contributes to an increase in birefringence and retention of a large band gap, facilitating phase matching in high-energy short-wavelength spectral ranges. On the other hand, the inclusion of ABUCBs in IR NLO compounds offers a feasible method for increasing the band gap and consequently enhancing the larger laser-induced damage threshold. This review consolidates various trial-and-error explorations and presents a novel strategy for designing 2nd-NLO compounds, potentially offering an opportunity for the development of high-performance 2nd-NLO materials.

Abstract
Borate materials continue to command considerable attention due to their remarkable capacity for applications in deep ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. Herein, two new metal borates KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) were extracted via the application of flux techniques. These two crystals adopt a centrosymmetric space group P21/c (no. 14), showcasing a layered structural configuration composed of isolated [BO3] plane triangles and [AlO4]/[GaO4] tetrahedra. Thermal analysis revealed that KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) exhibits an incongruent nature and possesses good thermal stability up to 1083 and 983 °C, respectively. Notably, these compounds display a short UV-transmission cutoff edge, approximately around 194 and 200 nm, accompanied by band gaps of 5.47 and 4.83 eV, respectively. Furthermore, KSrM3B2O9 (M = Al and Ga) demonstrates a moderate optical birefringence of 0.026 and 0.025, respectively. Additionally, first-principles calculations were employed to shed light on the intricate interplay between the structure and properties of these compounds.

Abstract
Metal oxychalcogenides as candidates for novel mid-infrared nonlinear-optical materials have attracted great interest due to the distinctive advantages of oxides and chalcogenides in this field. Herein, the first melilite-type rare-earth (RE) oxythiogermanates Eu2MGe2OS6 [M = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3)] are obtained by combining RE metals with localized f electrons, magnetic transition metals with delocalized d electrons, and the highly distorted mixed anionic group [GeOS3] into one structure. They belong to the tetragonal P4̅21m space group, and highly distorted [EuOS7] bicapped trigonal prisms bridge adjacent {[MGe2OS6]4-}∞ layers to build the three-dimensional network. Their optical band gaps are determined as 2.40, 2.11 and 2.14 eV, and they show moderate second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses (0.3, 0.3 and 0.5 × AGS) and large laser-induced damage thresholds (2.77-8.31 × AGS). Theoretical calculation results indicate that the synergistic effect of [EuOS7] and [MS4] units acts on the SHG effect. This work enriches the crystal chemistry of melilite-structure materials.

Abstract
Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials play a crucial role in cutting-edge laser technology. In order to solve the serious layered growth tendency of the sole commercial DUV NLO crystal KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF), developing alternative systems of compounds with bulk crystal habits has become an urgent task for practical applications. Herein, a novel strategy was developed by applying non-centrosymmetric (NCS) cancrinite (CAN)-type zincophosphates {Na6(OH)2(H2O)2}Cs2[ZnPO4]6 with bulk-crystal habits as the prototype to design new DUV NLO crystals. Two new anhydrous alkali zincophosphates, namely, {(Li6 -xNaxO)A2}[(ZnPO4)6] (A = Cs, Rb; x = 2-3) crystallizing in the NCS hexagonal space group P63 (no. 173) with a CAN-type framework, were successfully synthesized via a modified fluoro-solvo-hydrothermal method by applying triethylamine (TEA) and concentrated NaF solution as a co-solvent. Interestingly, the rigidity of the NCS CAN-type framework acting as the host ensures the non-centrosymmetry of the resulting new compounds. Meanwhile, the replacement of water molecules by guest cationic species in the channels or cages can greatly improve the thermal stability of the resultant crystal and tune its NLO properties. The synergetic effect of the host framework and the guest species makes the two compounds transparent down to the DUV region (<200 nm) and exhibit SHG effects. Therefore, the proposed rational design strategy of applying the known zeotype NCS frameworks as prototypes together with the modified fluoro-solvo-hydrothermal method opens a great avenue for highly effectively exploring new DUV NLO materials.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are a vital component in laser systems to modulate frequency. Organic groups have the advantages of easy synthesis, structural diversity, and large hyperpolarizations (β), which can be combined with inorganic groups to form unique organic-inorganic hybrid NLO crystal materials. Herein, a urea-containing crystal NaCl·CH4N2O·H2O is screened out and large-size crystals have been grown by a simple aqueous solution method. Compared with most reported organic-inorganic hybrid NLO materials, it has optimized comprehensive properties including a large SHG effect of 1.53 × KDP, a moderate birefringence (0.084@1064 nm), and a short UV cutoff edge of 209 nm. First-principles studies reveal that the dominant contributor to the linear and nonlinear optical properties is the urea molecule.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic hybrid nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are highly anticipated because of the integration of both merits of the organic and inorganic moieties. Herein, the 2-pyrimidinone cation (C4H5N2O)+ has been incorporated into the iodate system to form two polymorphic organic-inorganic hybrid iodates, namely, α- and β-(C4H5N2O)(IO3)·HIO3. They crystallize in different polar space groups (Ia and Pca21), and their structures feature one-dimensional (1D) chain structures composed of (C4H5N2O)+ cations, IO3- anions, and HIO3 molecules interconnected via hydrogen bonds. α- and β-(C4H5N2O) (IO3)·HIO3 exhibit strong and moderate second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses of 6.4 and 0.9 × KH2PO4 (KDP), respectively, the same band gaps of 3.65 eV, and high powder laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) values [51 and 57 × AgGaS2 (AGS)]. The results of theoretical calculations revealed that the large SHG effect of α-(C4H5N2O)(IO3)·HIO3 originated from the IO3 and HIO3 groups. This work indicates that (C4H5N2O)+ is a potential group for designing new NLO materials with brilliant optical performances.

Abstract
Herein, we have successfully synthesized two rubidium antimony (III) oxalates, namely, Rb2Sb(C2O4)2.5(H2O)3 and RbSb2(C2O4)F5, utilizing a low-temperature hydrothermal method. These two compounds share a similar chemical composition, consisting of Sb3+ cations with active lone pair electrons, alkali metal Rb+ ions, and planar π-conjugated C2O42- anions. However, they exhibit different symmetries, Rb2Sb(C2O4)2.5(H2O)3 is centrosymmetric (CS), while RbSb2(C2O4)F5 is noncentrosymmetric (NCS), which should be caused by the presence of F- ions. Notably, the NCS compound, RbSb2(C2O4)F5, demonstrates a moderate second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, approximately 1.3 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), and exhibits a large birefringence of 0.09 at 546 nm. These characteristics indicate that RbSb2(C2O4)F5 holds promising potential as a nonlinear optical material for ultraviolet (UV) applications. Detailed structural analysis and theoretical calculations confirm that the excellent optical properties arise from the synergistic effects between Sb3+ cations with SCALP and planar π-conjugated [C2O4]2- groups.

Abstract
Rare-earth (RE) chalcogenide borates are very rarely discovered in view of the difficulties in synthesis though they have demonstrated attractive physical performances. Here, the first mixed RE chalcogenide borates Eu5.4Sm3.6MgS2B20O41 (1) and Eu3Gd6MgS2B20O41 (2) are synthesized by combining RE, sulfur, and borate ions into one structure. They crystallize in the centrosymmetric hexagonal space group P63/m, and their 3D honeycomb-like {[B20O41]22-}∞ open frameworks are built by [B6O9(O0.5)6]6- and [B7O13(O0.5)3]8- polyanionic clusters and consolidated by Mg2+ ions; both of which are formed by BO4 tetrahedra and BO3 planar triangles. The coordination modes of RE ions are rare REO6S2 bicapped trigonal prisms and REO8S irregular polyhedra, and their band gaps are determined to be 2.25 and 2.22 eV, respectively. They exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions and distinct photocurrent responses. The corresponding theoretical calculations are also performed. The study of 1 and 2 perhaps stimulates interest in exploring new functional RE chalcogenide borates.

Abstract
The combination of π-conjugated oxalate anion with sulfate group has been explored in the solvent-free synthesis of two new magnesium sulfate oxalates. One of them has a layered structure crystallized in the noncentrosymmetric space group Ia, while the other has a chainlike structure crystallized in the centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The noncentrosymmetric solid has a wide optical bandgap and exhibits a moderate second-harmonic-generation response. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to disclose the origin of its second-order nonlinear-optical response.

Abstract
The development of a data-driven science paradigm is greatly revolutionizing the process of materials discovery. Particularly, exploring novel nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with the birefringent phase-matching ability to deep-ultraviolet (UV) region is of vital significance for the field of laser technologies. Herein, a target-driven materials design framework combining high-throughput calculations (HTC), crystal structure prediction, and interpretable machine learning (ML) is proposed to accelerate the discovery of deep-UV NLO materials. Using a dataset generated from HTC, an ML regression model for predicting birefringence is developed for the first time, which exhibits a possibility of achieving fast and accurate prediction. Essentially, crystal structures are adopted as the only known input of this model to establish a close structure-property relationship mapping birefringence. Utilizing the ML-predicted birefringence which can affect the shortest phase-matching wavelength, a full list of potential chemical compositions based on an efficient screening strategy is identified. Further, eight structures with good stability are discovered to show potential applications in the deep-UV region, owing to their promising NLO-related properties. This study provides a new insight into the discovery of NLO materials and this design framework can identify desired materials with high performances in the broad chemical space at a low computational cost.

Abstract
Rare earth borates, a subset of the essential nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, have sparked a significant amount of attention in recent years. In self-fluxing systems, two non-centrosymmetric scandium borates with classical B5O10 groups, namely Rb7SrSc2B15O30 (I) and Rb7CaSc2B15O30 (II), were successfully discovered. Both I and II exhibit a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge (<200 nm) and appropriate second-harmonic generation efficiency (∼0.76 × KH2PO4, ∼0.88 × KH2PO4 at 1064 nm, respectively). According to theoretical calculations, it is speculated that the band gap and NLO characteristics of these two compounds are mostly derived from the B5O10 group and the ScO6 octahedron. Due to the short cutoff edges of I and II, they may be considered as potential NLO materials in the UV and even deep UV spectral ranges. Furthermore, the advent of I and II adds to the diversity of rare earth borates.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, being the primary medium for laser wavelength conversion, are crucial in all-solid-state lasers. Borophosphates offer more structural varieties than pure borates and phosphates, and they have become popular as NLO crystal candidates. Through spontaneous crystallization, we acquired a noncentrosymmetric alkali metal borophosphate crystal material, K2Na3B2P3O13 (KNBPO). KNBPO crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmc21 space group with the following unit cell parameters: a = 13.9238(18) Å, b = 6.7673(8) Å, c = 12.1298(15) Å, and Z = 4, and its structure is characterized by a fundamental building unit 1∞ [B2P3O13] chain structure made up of bridging oxygen linkages between BO4 and PO4 tetrahedra. KNBPO has a short ultraviolet (UV) cut-off edge (<186 nm), a congruent melting characteristic, good thermal stability, and a moderate second harmonic generation response roughly 0.42 times that of KH2PO4. Theoretical calculations reveal that the optical properties of the compound mainly originate from BO4 and PO4 units. Due to the short UV cut-off edge, KNBPO can be used as a potential NLO material in the UV and even deep UV regions, and it enhances the structural variety of borophosphates, which has a reference value for scholars investigating similar materials.

Abstract
Large-sized crystals of the quaternary iodate NaVO2(IO3)2(H2O) (NVIO) with centimeter-scale dimensions (23 mm × 18 mm × 6 mm as a representative) have been successfully grown by the top-seeded hydrothermal method. Linear optical properties have been measured, including the optical transmission spectrum and refractive index. The NVIO crystal possesses an optical window with high transmittance (above 80%) over the range of 500-1410 nm and exhibits strong optical anisotropy with large birefringence Δn (nz - nx) of 0.1522 at 1064 nm and 0.1720 at 532 nm. Based on the measured refractive indices, the phase-matching conditions for second-harmonic generation (SHG) have been calculated, and SHG devices have further been fabricated along the calculated type I and type II phase-matching directions of (θ = 39.0°, φ = 3.8°) and (θ =53.8°, φ = 1.3°). Laser experiments of extra-cavity frequency doubling have been performed on these NVIO devices. It has been confirmed that the effective SHG conversion from 1064 to 532 nm could be achieved with an energy conversion efficiency of 8.1%. Our work demonstrates that large-sized NVIO crystals are promising in the frequency-doubling application.

Abstract
As one type of material containing multiple anions, oxysulfides can combine the advantages of oxides and sulfides and are deeply studied as nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials. Herein, a new melilite-type pentanary oxysulfide Sr2CoGe2OS6 is studied. It crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric tetragonal space group P4̅21m, and its structure features GeOS3 and CoS4 tetrahedra-built {[CoGe2OS6]4-}∞ layers. Its powder sample exhibits a moderate phase-matchable NLO response and a high laser-induced damage threshold. The NLO response is mainly determined by CoS4 tetrahedra according to the theoretical calculation results. This work indicates that transition-metal oxysulfides can also be considered as potential infrared NLO materials.

Abstract
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is of great technological importance for applications in nonlinear optics, but it remains challenging to engineer large SHG responses in the short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) region owing to competing microstructure requirements. Herein, we report the first examples of d0 transition-metal-based (TM-based) deep-UV-transparent nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals MOF4H2 (M = Zr (ZOF), Hf (HOF)), which exhibit unprecedented short UV absorption edges (below 190 nm). Evolving from the KTiOPO4 (KTP) structure by an isoreticular node substitution strategy, the three-dimensional frameworks of ZOF and HOF consist of corner-sharing [MO2F6] moieties that are new functional units in deep-UV NLO material design, conferring wide UV transparency and strong phase-matchable SHG response (2.2 × KH2PO4 (ZOF) and 1.8 × KH2PO4 (HOF) at 1064 nm). Such d0-TM-based [MO2F6] polyhedra preclude deleterious d-d electronic transitions, resulting in significantly blue-shifted UV absorption edges of ZOF and HOF (<190 nm). The d0-TM-based [MO2F6] polyhedra introduced in this work offer a new perspective in the construction of deep-UV transparent NLO materials, demonstrating the feasibility of an isoreticular design strategy in developing functional NLO materials.

Abstract
The present work applied the methods of density functional theory and the van der Waals interaction PBE + D3(BJ) on the basis of localized orbitals of the CRYSTAL17 package. It featured the effect of interactions between structural elements of fluorocarbonates ABCO3F (A: K, Rb, Cs; B: Mg, Ca, Sr, Zn, Cd) on their elastic and vibrational properties. The hexagonal structures proved to consist of alternating ···B-CO3··· and ···A-F··· layers in planes ab, interconnected along axis c by infinite chains ···F-B-F···, where cations formed polyhedra AOnF3 and BOmF2. The calculations included the band energy structure, the total and partial density of electron states, the energy and band widths of the upper ns- and np-states of alkali and alkaline-earth metals, as well as nd-zinc and nd-cadmium. For hydrostatic compression, we calculated the parameters of the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state and the linear compressibility moduli along the crystal axes and bond lines. We also defined the elastic constants of single crystals to obtain the Voigt–Reuss–Hill approximations for the elastic moduli of polycrystalline materials. The study also revealed the relationship between the elastic properties and the nature of the chemical bond. Hybrid functional B3LYP made it possible to calculate the modes of normal long-wavelength oscillations, which provided the spectra of infrared absorption and Raman scattering. Intramolecular modes ν1 and ν4 with one or two maxima were found to be intense, and their relative positions depended on the lengths of nonequivalent C–O bonds.

Abstract
Chemical responsivity in materials is essential to build systems with switchable functionalities. However, polarity-switchable materials are still rare because inducing a symmetry breaking of the crystal structure by adsorbing chemical species is difficult. In this study, we demonstrate that a molecular organic-inorganic hybrid crystal of (NEt4)2[MnN(CN)4] (1) undergoes polarity switching induced by water vapor and transforms into a rare example of proton-conducting second-harmonic-generation-active material. Centrosymmetric 1 transforms into noncentrosymmetric polar 1·3H2O and 1·MeOH by accommodating water and methanol molecules, respectively. However, only water vapor causes a spontaneous single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition. Moreover, 1·3H2O shows proton conduction with 2.3 × 10-6 S/cm at 298 K and a relative humidity of 80%.

Abstract
Fluorine-containing compounds have stimulated the exploration of ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Alkali/alkaline-earth metal phosphates are one of the important potential systems as NLO materials, while the common small birefringence limits the phase-matching (PM) ability in the ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet region. Herein, by applying a "fluorination synergy-induced enhancement of optical property" strategy, novel structures of phosphate fluoride/fluorophosphate in BePO3F with good thermodynamic/dynamic stability and promising NLO-related properties are discovered via performing crystal structure prediction combined with first-principles calculations. BePO3F-I-VI exhibit relatively large birefringence of 0.025, 0.048, 0.049, 0.049, 0.059, and 0.063 at 1064 nm, respectively. Simultaneously, BePO3F-I (Pc) is a new thermodynamically stable phosphate fluoride which possesses a wide band gap (Eg = 8.03 eV), large second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d11 = 0.67 pm/V, 1.7 × KDP), and the shortest PM wavelength of 292 nm. Other five thermodynamically metastable noncentrosymmetric (NCS) BePO3F structures (II-VI) belong to fluorophosphates and exhibit deep-ultraviolet PM wavelengths of 187, 183, 186, 188, and 196 nm. It reveals that the aligned nonbonding O 2p orbitals of [BeO2F2] and [PO4] units lead to a large SHG coefficient in the phosphate fluoride BePO3F-I. For fluorophosphates (BePO3F-II-VI), the synergy of [BeO3] planar units and [PO3F] units induces relatively large birefringence. Our research results provide an idea for exploring novel high-performance NLO materials.

Abstract
Two pyrenyl Schiff base derivatives with π conjugated structures (B2 and B3) were designed and synthesized. Then, B2 and B3 were added into polyurethane to obtain doped and bonded polyurethane nonlinear optical materials (B2/PU and B3/PU), respectively. The synthesized B2, B3, and polyurethane nonlinear optical materials were tested by a nanosecond (ns) and picosecond (ps) pulse Z-scan at a 532 nm wavelength. Due to the two-photon absorption-induced excited state absorption (TPA-ESA), B2, B3, and polyurethane nonlinear optical materials show reverse saturable absorption (RSA). From a quantum chemistry calculation, it can be concluded that the RSA of B2 and B3 comes from the large π conjugated system and intramolecular charge transfer. Furthermore, B2, B3, and the polyurethane nonlinear optical materials show good optical limiting. B2/PU and B3/PU not only have excellent nonlinear optical properties but also have good transmittance, thermal stability, and processability of polyurethane materials. The combination of pyrenyl Schiff base derivatives and polyurethane materials greatly improves the application of nonlinear small molecules in the field of optical limiting and all-optical switching.

Abstract
Deep-ultraviolet (DUV, wavelength λ < 200 nm) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal is the core component of frequency conversion to generate DUV laser, which plays an important role in cutting-edge laser technology and fundamental science. Significant progress has been made in both experimental exploration and theoretical design in the field of DUV NLO crystals over the past three decades. In-depth insight into "structure-property correlations", in particular, allows for rigorous and precise identification of DUV NLO crystals. In this article, we reviewed the current experimental and theoretical research progress while elucidating the core concepts and stringent criteria of qualified DUV phase-matched second-harmonic generation crystals. We also discussed the development of the DUV NLO "structure-property correlations" from first principles and how it has sparked interest in related materials, as well as future directions for obtaining potential DUV NLO crystals.

Abstract
SO4 tetrahedral groups have weak polarization anisotropy, which thus results in the small birefringence of sulfates. Here, we report new sulfate CsY(SO4)2·4H2O with unprecedented birefringence among deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) sulfates. Its single crystal (10 mm × 3.5 mm × 1.5 mm) was simply grown by an aqueous solution evaporation technique, and it features a rare layered structure composed of YO9 polyhedra, SO4 tetrahedra, and H2O molecules. Interestingly, each SO4 group donates two oxygen atoms to edge-share with one adjacent YO9 polyhedron and thus causes severe distortion of these groups. The characteristic edge-sharing mode gives CsY(SO4)2·4H2O a large birefringence of ∼0.045@546 nm, which is the maximum among deep-UV sulfates and phosphates with similar non-π-conjugated anionic groups. The ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared diffuse reflection and transmission spectra, infrared spectrum, thermal stability, and theoretical calculations are also presented. The fascinating results will improve our understanding of sulfates and may provide useful insights into the exploration of deep-UV sulfates with large birefringence.

Abstract
A wide bandgap is an essential requirement for a nonlinear optical (NLO) material. However, it is very challenging to simultaneously engineer a wide bandgap and a strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, particularly in NLO materials containing second-order Jahn–Teller (SOJT) distorted units. Herein, we employ a bandgap engineering strategy that involves the dual fluorination of two different types of SOJT distorted units to realize remarkably wide bandgaps in the first examples of 5d0-transition metal (TM) fluoroiodates. Crystalline A2WO2F3(IO2F2) (A = Rb (RWOFI) and Cs (CWOFI)) exhibit the largest bandgaps yet observed in d0-TM iodates (4.42 (RWOFI) and 4.29 eV (CWOFI)), strong phase-matching SHG responses of 3.8 (RWOFI) and 3.5 (CWOFI) × KH2PO4, and wide optical transparency windows. Computational studies have shown that the excellent optical responses result from synergism involving the two fluorinated SOJT distorted units ([WO3F3]3− and [IO2F2]−). This work provides not only an efficient strategy for bandgap modulation of NLO materials, but also affords insight into the relationship between the electronic structure of the various fluorinated SOJT distorted units and the optical properties of crystalline materials. Wide bandgaps, strong SHG responses, and sufficient birefringence are observed in the first examples of 5d0-transition metal fluoroiodates, A2WO2F3(IO2F2) (A = Rb, and Cs), which were constructed by dual-fluorination-directed bandgap engineering.![]()

Abstract
Ferroelectric oxides with large bandgaps have restricted applications in photovoltaic and photocatalytic fields. Based on recent experiments with the ferroelectric compound, LiSbO3, the stability and optoelectronic properties of a new ferroelectric compound, namely Li2SbBiO6, are investigated in this study. The calculated results demonstrate that Li2SbBiO6 satisfies the stability conditions of the elastic coefficients and phonon dynamics. Li2SbBiO6 maintains the ferroelectric polarization strength of LiSbO3 and significantly reduces the bandgap, and thus has been explored for applications in photovoltaic and photocatalytic fields. Li2SbBiO6 is a new potential ferroelectric oxide for harvesting visible light owing to its suitable bandgap and a large hole–electron effective mass ratio. Li2SbBiO6 slightly improves the ferroelectric polarization of LiSbO3 and significantly reduces the band gap to expand its applications in photovoltaic and photocatalysis under visible light.![]()

Abstract
The targeted synthesis of deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, especially those with non-π-conjugated sulfates, has experienced considerable difficulties due to the need to reconcile the oft-competing requirements for deep-UV transparency and strong second-harmonic generation (SHG). We report herein the designed synthesis of the first rare-earth metal-based deep-UV sulfate La(NH4 )(SO4 )2 by a double-salt strategy involving introduction of complementary cations, together with optical studies that reveal a short-wavelength deep-UV absorption edge (below 190 nm) and the strongest SHG response among deep-UV NLO sulfates (2.4×KDP). Theoretical calculations and crystal structure analysis suggest that the excellent balance between SHG response and deep-UV transparency can be attributed to a synergistic interaction of the hetero-cations La3+ and [NH4 ]+ , which optimize alignment of the [SO4 ] tetrahedra and highly polarizable [LaO8 ] polyhedra.
