Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Classification, Synthesis, Modification, and Biomedical Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new variety of solid crystalline porous functional materials. As an extension of inorganic porous materials, it has made important progress in preparation and application. MOFs are widely used in various fields such as gas adsorption storage, drug delivery, sensing, and biological imaging due to their high specific surface area, porosity, adjustable pore size, abundant active sites, and functional modification by introducing groups. In this paper, the types of MOFs are classified, and the synthesis methods and functional modification mechanisms of MOFs materials are summarized. Finally, the application prospects and challenges of metal-organic framework materials in the biomedical field are discussed, hoping to promote their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Adsorption in Pyrene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: The Role of Pore Structure and Topology

Pore topology and chemistry play crucial roles in the adsorption characteristics of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). To deepen our understanding of the interactions between MOFs and CO2 during this process, we systematically investigate the adsorption properties of a group of pyrene-based MOFs. These MOFs feature Zn(II) as the metal ion and employ a pyrene-based ligand, specifically 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene (TBAPy). Including different additional ligands leads to frameworks with distinctive structural and chemical features. By comparing these structures, we could isolate the role that pore size, the presence of open-metal sites (OMS), metal-oxygen bridges, and framework charges play in the CO2 adsorption of these MOFs. Frameworks with constricted pore structures display a phenomenon known as the confinement effect, fostering stronger MOF-CO2 interactions and higher uptakes at low pressures. In contrast, entropic effects dominate at elevated pressures, and the MOF's pore volume becomes the driving factor. Through analysis of the CO2 uptakes of the benchmark materials ─some with narrower pores and others with larger pore volumes─it becomes evident that structures with narrower pores and high binding energies excel at low pressures. In contrast, those with larger volumes perform better at elevated pressures. Moreover, this research highlights that open-metal sites and inherent charges within the frameworks of ionic MOFs stand out as CO2-philic characteristics.

UoC-7: A Bimetallic K-Zn-MOF with an Anionic Framework Based on Fluorinated Trimesate Ligands Exhibiting a Large CO2 Uptake

In solvothermal reactions of Zn(NO3)2×6H2O with K(H2mF-BTC) or K(H2dF-BTC) in DMF/ethanol or DMA/ethanol solvent mixtures, single crystals of the MOFs UoC-7(1F) and UoC-7(2F) were obtained crystallizing in the hexagonal space group P63/m (no. 176) (H3BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid; mF-/dF: mono-/difluoro; DMF: N,N-dimethylformamide; DMA: N,N-dimethylacetamide; UoC: University of Cologne). According to the general composition [(CH3)2NH2][K2Zn3(mF-/dF-BTC)3(H2O)]×solvent, UoC-7 consists of an anionic bimetallic framework. The charge is compensated by a (CH3)2NH2 + cation stemming from the (partial) hydrolysis of the solvent. The crystal structure shows large channels along the hexagonal [001] direction, which accommodate the cations as well as solvent molecules. Surface areas (SBET) of 2740 m2/g (UoC-7(1F)) and 1643 m2/g (UoC-7(2F)) were obtained from N2 sorption measurements. UoC-7 shows structural similarities to the MOF NKU-521 with a 5-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)isophthalate linker. Both MOFs exhibit a 4,7,8T14 topology. Despite smaller channels in UoC-7 compared to NKU-521, the CO2 uptake is considerably higher (~164 cm3/g at 1 bar/293 K) being one of the highest CO2 uptakes observed up to now.

Selective Adsorption of Dyes and Fe3+ Sensing via Tb3+ Incorporation in an Anionic Cadmium-Organic Framework

A three-dimensional (3D) anionic cadmium-organic framework, namely [(CH3)2NH2][Cd1.5(DMTDC)2] ⋅ 2DMA ⋅ 0.5H2O (Cd-MOF; DMA=N,N-dimethylacetamide), was successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions by using a linear thienothiophene-containing dicarboxylate ligand, 3,4-dimethylthieno [2,3-b]-thiophene-2,5-dicar-boxylic acid (H2DMTDC). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Cd-MOF exhibits a 3D anionic framework with pcu α-Po topology, featuring rectangle and rhombus-shaped channels along b- and c- axis direction. Cd-MOF demonstrates selective adsorption of cationic dyes over anionic and neutral dyes. Additionally, Tb3+-loaded Cd-MOF serves as a fast-response fluorescence sensor for the sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions with a low limit of detection (8.90×10-7 M) through fluorescence quenching.

Controlled Localized Metal-Organic Framework Synthesis on Anion Exchange Membranes

Metal-organic framework (MOF) films can be used in various applications. In this work, we propose a method that can be used to synthesize MOF films localized on a single side of an anion exchange membrane, preventing the transport of the metal precursor via Donnan exclusion. This is advantageous compared to the related contra-diffusion method that results in the growth of a MOF film on both sides of the support, differing in quality on both sides. Our proposed method has the advantage that the synthesis conditions can potentially be tuned to create the optimal conditions for crystal growth on a single side. The localized growth of the MOF is governed by Donnan exclusion of the anion exchange membrane, preventing metal ions from passing to the other compartment, and this leads to a local control of the precursor stoichiometry. In this work, we show that our method can localize the growth of both Cu-BTC and ZIF-8 in water and in methanol, respectively, highlighting that this method can used for preparing a variety of MOF films with varying characteristics using soluble precursors at room temperature.

Progress and Challenges in Tumor Ferroptosis Treatment Strategies: A Comprehensive Review of Metal Complexes and Nanomedicine

Ferroptosis is a new form of regulated cell death featuring iron-dependent lipid peroxides accumulation to kill tumor cells. A growing body of evidence has shown the potential of ferroptosis-based cancer therapy in eradicating refractory malignancies that are resistant to apoptosis-based conventional therapies. In recent years, studies have reported a number of ferroptosis inducers that can increase the vulnerability of tumor cells to ferroptosis by regulating ferroptosis-related signaling pathways. Encouraged by the rapid development of ferroptosis-driven cancer therapies, interdisciplinary fields that combine ferroptosis, pharmaceutical chemistry, and nanotechnology are focused. First, the prerequisites and metabolic pathways for ferroptosis are briefly introduced. Then, in detail emerging ferroptosis inducers designed to boost ferroptosis-induced tumor therapy, including metal complexes, metal-based nanoparticles, and metal-free nanoparticles are summarized. Subsequently, the application of synergistic strategies that combine ferroptosis with apoptosis and other regulated cell death for cancer therapy, with emphasis on the use of both cuproptosis and ferroptosis to induce redox dysregulation in tumor and intracellular bimetallic copper/iron metabolism disorders during tumor treatment is discussed. Finally, challenges associated with clinical translation and potential future directions for potentiating cancer ferroptosis therapies are highlighted.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) to hydrocarbon fuels

MOF-based photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) using CO2 as an electron donor offers a green, clean, and extensible way to make hydrocarbon fuels under more tolerant conditions. Herein, basic principles of PEC reduction of CO2 and the preparation methods and characterization techniques of MOF-based materials are summarized. Furthermore, three applications of MOFs for improving the photoelectrocatalytic performance of CO2 reduction are described: (i) as photoelectrode alone; (ii) as a co-catalyst of semiconductor photoelectrode or as a substrate for loading dyes, quantum dots, and other co-catalysts; (iii) as one of the components of heterojunction structure. Challenges and future wave surrounding the development of robust PEC CO2 systems based on MOF materials are also discussed briefly.

Engineering iron-based nanomaterials for breast cancer therapy associated with ferroptosis

Ferroptosis has received increasing attention as a novel nonapoptotic programmed death. Recently, iron-based nanomaterials have been extensively exploited for efficient tumor ferroptosis therapy, as they directly release high concentrations of iron and increase intracellular reactive oxygen species levels. Breast cancer is one of the commonest malignant tumors in women; inhibiting breast cancer cell proliferation through activating the ferroptosis pathway could be a potential new target for patient treatment. Here, we briefly introduce the background of ferroptosis and systematically review the current cancer therapeutic strategies based on iron-based ferroptosis inducers. Finally, we summarize the advantages of these various ferroptosis inducers and shed light on future perspectives. This review aims to provide better guidance for the development of iron-based nanomaterial ferroptosis inducers.

Structure and properties of metal-organic frameworks modulated by sulfate ions

Anions play a significant role in the construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Anions can affect coordination between metal ions and organic ligands, and the formation of crystal structures, thereby affecting the structure and properties of MOFs. Two novel 3D porous MOFs ({[Cd3(TIPE)2(SO4)1.6(H2O)2.4]·2.8OH·6.2H2O}n (MOF-1) and {[Cd3(TIPE)2(SO4)3(H2O)2]·10H2O}n (MOF-2)) were successfully synthesized, by introducing SO42- to design and adjust their structure and properties, in which the sulfate ions not only participated in coordination but also played a bridging role. Both MOF-1 and MOF-2 exhibited high stability and strong fluorescence properties, and their fluorescence properties also changed compared to those of previously reported 2D nonporous MOF-3 ({[Cd2(TIPE)2Cl3(ACN)]·CdCl3·3H2O}n) with an identical ligand. They could also be used in combination with MOF-3 to distinguish between Fe3+ and Cr2O72- ions, due to a change in their fluorescence properties. In this work, the structure was reshaped by introducing sulfate ions, and the role and function of the sulfate ions in the structure were studied, providing a feasible idea for the design and precise regulation of MOFs.

A Water-Stable Cationic SIFSIX MOF for Luminescent Probing of Cr2 O7 2- via Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation

The sensing and monitoring of toxic oxo-anion contaminants in water are of significant importance to biological and environmental systems. A rare hydro-stable SIFSIX metal-organic framework, SiF6 @MOF-1, {[Cu(L)2 (H2 O)2 ]·(SiF6 )(H2 O)}n , with exchangeable SiF6 2- anion in its pore is strategically designed and synthesized, exhibiting selective detection of toxic Cr2 O7 2- oxo-anion in an aqueous medium having high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability through fluorescence quenching phenomena. More importantly, the recognition and ion exchange mechanism is unveiled through the rarely explored single-crystal-to-single crystal (SC-SC) fashion with well-resolved structures. A thorough SC-SC study with interfering anions (Cl- , F- , I- , NO3 - , HCO3 - , SO4 2- , SCN- , IO3 - ) revealed no such transformations to take place, as per line with quenching studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that despite a lesser binding affinity, Cr2 O7 2- shows strong orbital mixing and large driving forces for electron transfer than SiF6 2- , and thus enlightens the fluorescence quenching mechanism. This work inaugurates the usage of a SIFSIX MOF toward sensing application domain under aqueous medium where hydrolytic stability is a prime concern for their plausible implementation as sensor materials.

Role of Counterions in the Structural Stabilisation of Redox-Active Metal-Organic Frameworks

The crystal structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are typically determined by the strong chemical bonds formed between the organic and inorganic building units. However, the latest generation of redox-active frameworks often rely on counterions in the pores to access specific charge states of the components. Here, we model the crystal structures of three layered MOFs based on the redox-active ligand 2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone (dhbq): Ti2 (Cl2 dhbq)3 , V2 (Cl2 dhbq)3 and Fe2 (Cl2 dhbq)3 with implicit and explicit counterions. Our full-potential first-principles calculations indicate that while the reported hexagonal structure is readily obtained for Ti and V, the Fe framework is stabilised only by the presence of explicit counterions. For high counterion concentrations, we observe the formation of an electride-like pocket in the pore center. An outlook is provided on the implications of solvent and counterion control for engineering the structures and properties of porous solids.

Sulfonated magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes with enhanced bonding stability, high adsorption performance, and reusability for water remediation

In view of the simple and rapid conveniency of magnetic separation, magnetic nanocomposites had notably gained attention from researchers for environmental field applications. In this work, carboxylated magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MMWCNTs) and novel sulfonated MMWCNTs (s-MMWCNTs) were synthesized by a facile solvent-free direct doping method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray, vibrating sample magnetometer, and point of zero charge analyses confirmed the successful doping of the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles into the functionalized MWCNTs to form MMWCNTs. Besides, the bonding stabilities of both c-MMWCNTs and s-MMWCNTs were compared, and results showed that s-MMWCNTs possessed more substantial bonding stability than that of c-MMWCNTs with significantly less leaching amount of Fe₃O₄. The adsorption capacity of s-MMWCNTs was higher than that of c-MMWCNTs owing to the stronger electronegativity sulfonic group in s-MMWCNTs. Moreover, the reusability experiments proved that the adsorbent remained consistently excellent MB removal efficiency (R > 94%) even reused for twelve cycles of batch adsorption. The finding of the present work highlights the simple fabrication of novel s-MMWCNTs and its potential to be served as a promising and sustainable adsorbent for water remediation owing to its enhanced bonding stability, high adsorption performance, magnetic separability, and supreme recyclability.

π-Stacks of radical-anionic naphthalenediimides in a metal-organic framework

Radical-ionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have unique optical, magnetic, and electronic properties. These radical ions, forcibly formed by external stimulus-induced redox processes, are structurally unstable and have short radical lifetimes. Here, we report two naphthalenediimide-based (NDI-based) Ca-MOFs: DGIST-6 and DGIST-7. Neutral DGIST-6, which is generated first during solvothermal synthesis, decomposes and is converted into radical-anionic DGIST-7. Cofacial (NDI)₂^•- and (NDI)₂^2- dimers are effectively stabilized in DGIST-7 by electron delocalization and spin-pairing as well as dimethylammonium counter cations in their pores. Single-crystal x-ray diffractometry was used to visualize redox-associated structural transformations, such as changes in centroid-to-centroid distance. Moreover, the unusual rapid reduction of oxidized DGIST-7 into the radical anion upon infrared irradiation results in effective and reproducible photothermal conversion. This study successfully illustrated the strategic use of in situ prepared cofacial ligand dimers in MOFs that facilitate the stabilization of radical ions.

Ionic metal-organic frameworks (iMOFs): progress and prospects as ionic functional materials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been a research hotspot for the last two decades, witnessing an extraordinary upsurge across various domains in materials chemistry. Ionic MOFs (both anionic and cationic MOFs) have emerged as next-generation ionic functional materials and are an important subclass of MOFs owing to their ability to generate strong electrostatic interactions between their charged framework and guest molecules. Furthermore, the presence of extra-framework counter-ions in their confined nanospaces can serve as additional functionality in these materials, which endows them a significant advantage in specific host-guest interactions and ion-exchange-based applications. In the present review, we summarize the progress and future prospects of iMOFs both in terms of fundamental developments and potential applications. Furthermore, the design principles of ionic MOFs and their state-of-the-art ion exchange performances are discussed in detail and the future perspectives of these promising ionic materials are proposed.

Recent Advances of Silver-Based Coordination Polymers on Antibacterial Applications

With the continuous evolution of bacteria and the constant use of traditional antibiotics, the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and super viruses has attracted worldwide attention. Antimicrobial therapy has become the most popular and important research field at present. Coordination Polymer (CP) and/or metal-organic framework (MOF) platforms have the advantages of a high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity, have a great antibacterial potential and have been widely used in antibacterial treatment. This paper reviewed the mechanism and antibacterial effect of three typical MOFs (pure Ag-MOFs, hybrid Ag-MOFs, and Ag-containing-polymer @MOFs) in silver-based coordination polymers. At the same time, the existing shortcomings and future views are briefly discussed. The study on the antibacterial efficacy and mechanism of Ag-MOFs can provide a better basis for its clinical application and, meanwhile, open up a novel strategy for the preparation of more advanced Ag-contained materials with antibacterial characteristics.

Recent advances in Ti-based MOFs in biomedical applications

Currently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), basically inorganic-organic hybrid materials, have gained tremendous attention due to their vast applications. MOFs have shown enormous applications in almost every research field. However, the area of designing MOF materials for their biological applications is still an emerging field that needs attention. Titanium-based metal-organic framework (Ti-MOF) materials are used in many research areas due to their structural advantages, such as small particle size and large effective surface area. On the other hand, they have also shown unique advantages such as good biocompatibility, excellent catalytic oxidation and photocatalytic properties and ease of functionalization. This study reviews the recent research progress on Ti-MOFs in therapeutic areas such as antibacterial, oncology, anti-inflammation, and bone injury, which will provide new directions for further research in this biomedical field. Therefore, this article will help scientists working in the particular field to enhance their understanding of Ti-based MOFs for functional biomedical applications.

Current status and prospects of metal-organic frameworks for bone therapy and bone repair

With the development of society, traumatic bone defects caused by accidents, diseases and surgeries have become common, eventually resulting in an increase in bone defects. The treatment of bone defects is characterized by a long period of treatment, high cost and uncontrollable outcomes. Also, it results in complications such as infection and bone discontinuity. Hence, due to this situation, the physical, mental and financial aspects of the patient are severely affected. What's more, such outcomes pose a challenge to orthopaedic surgeons. As a result, bone therapy and bone repair have become a hot topic of interest. In repairing bone defects, materials other than autogenous bone are still unable to provide good biocompatibility, osteogenesis, osteoconductivity and osteoinduction properties at the same time. In addition, the scarcity of autologous bone sources has forced the search for new autologous bone replacement materials. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of developed functional materials that have been widely used in the biomedical field during the recent years due to their porous nature, large specific surface area and diverse structures. With the progress in the investigation into bone treatment and repair, more and more investigators are using MOFs in bone therapy and bone repair. With these viewpoints, in the present perspective, the use of MOFs in bone therapy and bone repair has been summarized, and an insight into the future of MOFs in bone therapy and bone repair has been provided.

Heterometallic Dual-Liganded AE-Ln-CPs Luminescent Probes for Efficient Sensing of Fe(III) Ions

Iron ion is widely present in the environment and in biological systems, and are indispensable trace elements in living organisms, so development of an efficient and simple sensor for sensing Fe(III) ions has attracted much attention. Here, six heterometallic AE-Ln coordination polymers (CPs) [Ln₂ (pda)₄(Hnda)₂Ca₂(H₂O)₂]·MeOH (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2); H₂pda = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, H₂nda = 2,3-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid), [Ln (pda)₂ (nda)AE₂(HCOO)(H₂O)] (AE = Sr, Ln = Eu (3), Tb (4); AE = Ba, Ln = Eu (5), Tb (6)) with two-dimensional (2D) layer structures were synthesized by hydrothermal method. All of them were characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, IR, TG, as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. They all show infinite 2D network structure, where complexes 1 and 2 are triclinic with space group of P1¯, while 3-6 belong to the monoclinic system, space group P2_1/n. The solid-state fluorescence lifetimes of complexes 1, 3 and 5 are τ_obs1 = 1930.94, 2049.48 and 2,413.04 µs, respectively, and the quantum yields Ф_total are 63.01, 60.61, 87.39%, respectively, which are higher than those of complexes 2, 4 and 6. Complexes 1-6 all exhibited efficient fluorescence quenching response to Fe³⁺ ions in water, and were not interfered by the following metal ions: Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Ca²⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺, Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Al³⁺, Fe²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cr³⁺, Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺. The quenching coefficient K_SV for complexes 1-6 is 1.41 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, 7.10 × 10⁴ M⁻¹, 1.70 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, 1.57 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, 9.37 × 10⁴ M⁻¹, 1.27 × 10⁵ M⁻¹, respectively. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of these complexes towards Fe³⁺ ions was also investigated. It is possible that the weak interaction formed between the complexes and the Fe³⁺ ions reduce the energy transfer from the ligand to the Ln³⁺ ion, producing the emission burst effect. This suggests that complexes 1-6 can be candidate for efficient luminescent sensor of Fe³⁺.

Manganese complexes and manganese-based metal-organic frameworks as contrast agents in MRI and chemotherapeutics agents: Applications and prospects

Manganese-based Metal-organic Frameworks (Mn-MOFs) represents a unique sub-class of MOFs with low toxicity, oxidative ability, and biocompatibility, which plays vital role in the application of this class of MOFs in medical field. Mn-MOFs show great potential in biomedical applications, and has been extensively studied as compared to other MOFs in transition metal series. They are important in medical applications because Mn(II) possess large electron spin number and longer electron relaxation time. They display fast water exchange rate and could be employed as a potential MRI contrast agent because of their strong targeting ability. Manganese complexes with different ligands also display prospective applications in area such as carrier for drug targeting in anti-tumor and antimicrobial therapy. In the review presented herewith, the application of Mn-based complexes and Mn-MOFs have been emphasized in the area such as imaging viz. MRI, multimodal imaging, antitumor activities such as chemodynamic therapy, photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy and antimicrobial applications. Also, how rational designing and syntheses of targeted Mn-based complexes and Mn-MOFs can engender desired applications.

Rapid Cs+ Capture via Multiple Supramolecular Interactions in Anionic Metal-Organic Framework Isomers

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide an ideal platform for ion exchange due to their high porosity and structural designability; however, developing MOFs that have the essential characteristics for ion exchange remains a challenge. These crucial features include fast kinetics, selectivity, and stability. We present two anionic isomers, DGIST-2 (2D) and DGIST-3 (3D), comprising distinctly arranged 5-(1,8-naphthalimido)isophthalate ligands and In³⁺ cations. Interestingly, in protic solvents, DGIST-2 transforms into a hydrolytically stable crystalline phase, DGIST-2'. DGIST-2' and DGIST-3 exhibit rapid Cs⁺ adsorption kinetics, as well as high Cs⁺ affinity in the presence of competing cations. The mechanism for rapid and selective sorption is explored based on the results of single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of Cs⁺-incorporated DGIST-3. In Cs⁺-containing solutions, the loosely incorporated dimethylammonium countercation of the anionic framework is replaced by Cs⁺, which is held in the hydrophobic cavity by supramolecular ion-ion and cation-π interactions.

Anion-Afforded Functions of Ionic Metal-Organic Frameworks: Ionochromism, Anion Conduction, and Catalysis

The exchangeable counterions in ionic metal-organic frameworks (IMOFs) provide facile and versatile handles to manipulate functions associated with the ionic guests themselves and host-guest interactions. However, anion-exchangeable stable IMOFs combining multiple anion-related functions are still undeveloped. In this work, a novel porous IMOF featuring unique self-penetration was constructed from an electron-deficient tris(pyridinium)-tricarboxylate zwitterionic ligand. The water-stable IMOF undergoes reversible and single-crystal-to-single-crystal anion exchange and shows selective and discriminative ionochromic behaviors toward electron-rich anions owing to donor-acceptor interactions. The IMOFs with different anions are good ionic conductors with low activation energy, the highest conductivity being observed with chloride. Furthermore, integrating Lewis acidic sites and nucleophilic guest anions in solid state, the IMOFs act as heterogeneous and recyclable catalysts to efficiently catalyze the cycloaddition of CO₂ to epoxides without needing the use of halide cocatalysts. The catalytic activity is strongly dependent upon the guest anions, and the iodide shows the highest activity. The results demonstrate the great potential of developing IMOFs with various functions related to the guest ions included in the porous matrices.

A microporous anionic metal–organic framework for aqueous encapsulation and highly reversible sensitization of light-emitting Tb3+ ions

In Situ Transformation of Metal-Organic Frameworks into Hollow Nickel-Cobalt Double Hydroxide Arrays for Efficient Water Oxidation

Developing earth-abundant electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount significance for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, an efficient in situ etching-deposition growth strategy is employed to transform pristine two-dimensional (2D) Co-metal-organic frameworks into hollow Ni/Co double hydroxide arrays (denoted as Ni/Co-DH), which not only yields a larger surface area and exposes more active sites but also decreases the activation energy to the OER. With structural and compositional benefits, the Ni/Co-DH exhibits high performance with an overpotential of 229 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and exceptional long-term stability of over 90 h in 1 M KOH medium for OER, comparable to most non-noble oxygen evolution catalysts reported so far. In addition, a two-electrode Ni/Co-DH∥Pt/C electrolyzer also requires a considerably low voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm^-2 for overall water splitting. This study affords a rational strategy to develop water-alkali electrolyzers with great complexity for large-scale water-splitting systems.

Alkali /alkaline earth-based metal-organic frameworks for biomedical applications

With the steady development of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, this peculiar class of three-dimensional materials has found application prospects in a myriad of areas. The integration of different metals with various categories of ligands engendered a full gamut of frameworks, which of course are supplemented by diversified modification methods. Amongst many metal centers utilized to design and synthesize targeted MOFs, alkali/alkaline earth metal-based MOFs are gaining significant attention because these metal centers can be regarded as human endogenous metals. Numerous studies have shown that alkali/alkaline earth metal MOFs (A/A-E MOFs) tend to have better properties than other metals. This is because A/A-E MOFs offer better biocompatibility, so it is expected to be used in a broader field of biomedicine in the near future. This review mainly introduces the application of A/A-E MOF materials in drug delivery, sensing, and some materials with unique biomedical applications, and elaborates the challenges, obstacles and development of some A/A-E MOF materials in the biomedical field.
