Abstract
The [(p-cymene)RuCl(κ2C,N-{CNHC-NH})]+X- (CNHC = thiazol-2-ylidene) complexes with a bidentate ligand (2: X = Cl and 3: X = PF6) were prepared by a one-pot reaction of vitamin B1 (VB1, 1), Ag2O and [(p-cymene)RuCl2]2. In the complexes, VB1 coordinates through C2 and the exocyclic N in the imino form with the κ2-(C,N) coordination mode. The complexes 2 and 3 are stable in the solid state, but slowly release p-cymene in solution. Furthermore, upon heating in polar solvents, 2 or 3 can be converted by ligand exchange reactions to produce [(L)3RuCl(κ2C,N-{CNHC-NH})]+PF6- (4: L = py).Robustness was improved remarkably for 4. The complex 4 is stable in the solid state and in solution. The complexes 2-4 have been identified by 1H and 13C{1H} 2D NMR spectroscopy and 2 and 4 were studied by X-ray crystallography. In an effort to develop a recyclable catalyst in water, 2-4 were evaluated for TH of ketones and aldehydes with an azeotropic mixture of HCOOH/Et3N in water. The complexes 3 and 4 exhibited very good catalytic activity and 4 could be reused nine times without significant loss of activity, giving a high turnover frequency (TOF50%(h-1) = 1286).

Abstract
N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a major direction in ancillary ligand development for stabilization of reactive metal centers in inorganic and organometallic chemistry. In particular, wingtip-flexible NHCs have attracted significant attention due to their unique ability to provide a sterically-demanding environment for transition metals in various oxidation states. Herein, we report a new class of sterically-hindered, wingtip-flexible NHC ligands that feature N,C-chelating oxazole donors. These ligands are readily accessible through a modular arylation of oxazole derivatives. We report their synthesis and complete structural and electronic characterization. The evaluation of steric, electron-donating and π-accepting properties and coordination chemistry to Ag(I), Pd(II) and Rh(I) is described. Preliminary studies of catalytic activity in Ag, Pd and Rh-catalyzed coupling and hydrosilylation reactions are presented. This study establishes the fluxional behavior of a freely-rotatable oxazole unit, wherein the oxazolyl ring adjusts to the steric and electronic environment of the metal center. Considering the tremendous impact of sterically-hindered NHCs and their potential to stabilize reactive metals by N-chelation, we expect that this class of NHC ligands will be of broad interest in inorganic and organometallic chemistry.

Abstract
Thiazetidin-2-ylidenes have been designed as four membered N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) using quantum chemical studies. These species are smaller analogs of thiazol-2-ylidenes, possess high singlet stability (57 kcal mol-1) and large nucleophilicity (3.4 eV). The possible existence of these carbenes has been established by synthesizing and crystalizing compounds with NHC→N+←(thiazetidin-2-ylidene) coordination bonds.

Abstract
Since the discovery of persistent carbenes by the isolation of 1,3-di-l-adamantylimidazol-2-ylidene by Arduengo and coworkers, we witnessed a fast growth in the design and applications of this class of ligands and their metal complexes. Modular synthesis and ease of electronic and steric adjustability made this class of sigma donors highly popular among chemists. While the nature of the metal-carbon bond in transition metal complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) is predominantly considered to be neutral sigma or dative bonds, the strength of the bond is highly dependent on the energy match between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the NHC ligand and that of the metal ion. Because of their versatility, the coordination chemistry of NHC ligands with was explored with almost all transition metal ions. Other than the transition metals, NHCs are also capable of establishing a chemical bond with the main group elements. The advances in the catalytic applications of the NHC ligands linked with a second tether are discussed. For clarity, more frequently targeted catalytic reactions are considered first. Carbon-carbon coupling reactions, transfer hydrogenation of alkenes and carbonyl compounds, ketone hydrosilylation, and chiral catalysis are among highly popular reactions. Areas where the efficacy of the NHC based catalytic systems were explored to a lesser extent include CO2 reduction, C-H borylation, alkyl amination, and hydroamination reactions. Furthermore, the synthesis and applications of transition metal complexes are covered.

Abstract
By using copper(I) homoenolates as nucleophiles, which are generated through the ring-opening of 1-substituted cyclopropane-1-ols, a catalytic asymmetric allylic substitution with allyl phosphates is achieved in high to excellent yields with high enantioselectivity. Both 1-substituted cyclopropane-1-ols and allylic phosphates enjoy broad substrate scopes. Remarkably, various functional groups, such as ether, ester, tosylate, imide, alcohol, nitro, and carbamate are well tolerated. Moreover, the present method is nicely extended to the asymmetric construction of quaternary carbon centers. Some control experiments argue against a radical-based reaction mechanism and a catalytic cycle based on a two-electron process is proposed. Finally, the synthetic utilities of the product are showcased by means of the transformations of the terminal olefin group and the ketone group.

Abstract
A series of photochromic complexes with general formulas of [Ru(bpy)2(NHC-SR)]2+ and [Ru(bpy)2(NHC-S(O)R)]2+ were prepared and investigated by X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy {where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine and NHC-SR and NHC-S(O)R are chelating thioether (-SR) and chelating sulfoxide [-S(O)R] N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands}. The only differences between these complexes are the nature of the R group on the sulfur (Me vs Ph), the identity of the carbene (imidazole vs benzimidazole), and the number of linker atoms in the chelate (CH2 vs C2H4). A total of 13 structures are presented {four [Ru(bpy)2(NHC-SR)]2+ complexes, four [Ru(bpy)2(NHC-S(O)R)]2+ complexes, and five uncomplexed ligands}, and these reveal the expected coordination geometry as predicted from other spectroscopy data. The data do not provide insight into the photochemical reactivity of these compounds. These carbene ligands do impart stability with respect to ground state and excited state ligand substitution reactions. Bulk photolysis reveals that these complexes undergo efficient S → O isomerization, with quantum yields ranging from 0.24 to 0.87. The excited state reaction occurs with a time constant ranging from 570 ps to 1.9 ns. Electrochemical studies reveal an electron transfer-triggered isomerization, and voltammograms are consistent with an ECEC (electrochemical-chemical electrochemical-chemical) reaction mechanism. The carbene facilitates an unusually slow S → O isomerization and an unusally fast O → S isomerization. Temperature studies reveal a small and negative entropy of activation for the O → S isomerization, suggesting an associative transition state in which the sulfoxide simply slides along the S-O bond during isomerization. Ultrafast studies provide evidence of an active role of the carbene in the excited state dynamics of these complexes.

Abstract
Application of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) palladium complexes has been successful for the modulation of C–C coupling reactions. For this purpose, a series of azolium salts (1a–f) including benzothiazolium, benzimidazolium, and imidazolium, bearing a CN-substituted benzyl moiety, and their (NHC)2PdBr2 (2a–c) and PEPPSI-type palladium (3b–f) complexes have been systematically prepared to catalyse acylative Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction of acyl chlorides with arylboronic acids to form benzophenone derivatives in the presence of potassium carbonate as a base and to catalyse the traditional Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction of bromobenzene with arylboronic acids to form biaryls. All the synthesized compounds were fully characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals of 3c, 3e and 3f prove the square planar geometry. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), metal mapping analyses and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to get further insights into the mechanism of the Suzuki–Miyaura cross coupling reactions. Mechanistic studies have revealed that the stability and coordination of the complexes by the CN group are achieved by the removal of pyridine from the complex in catalytic cycles. The presence of the CN group in the (NHC)Pd complexes significantly increased the catalytic activities for both reactions. Nitrile-functionalized Pd(ii) complexes have evaluated for the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. The highest TON value was reached for the acylative Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of acyl chlorides with phenylboronic acids.![]()

Abstract
Novel bidentate N‐heterocyclic carbene‐phosphine iridium complexes have been synthesized and evaluated in the hydrogenation of ketones. Reported catalytic systems require base additives and, if excluded, need elevated temperature or high pressure of hydrogen gas to achieve satisfactory reactivity. The developed catalysts showed extremely high reactivity and good enantioselectivity under base‐free and mild conditions. In the presence of 1 mol % catalyst under 1 bar hydrogen pressure at room temperature, hydrogenation was complete in 30 minutes giving up to 96 % ee. Again, this high reactivity was achieved in additive‐free conditions. Mechanistic experiments demonstrated that balloon pressure of hydrogen was sufficient to form the activate species by reducing and eliminating the 1,5‐cyclooctadiene ligand. The pre‐activated catalyst was able to hydrogenate acetophenone with 89 % conversion in 5 min.

Abstract
Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become immensely successful ligands in coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis due to their strong terminal σ-donor properties. However, by targeting NHC ligands with additional functionalisation, a new area of NHC coordination chemistry has developed that has enabled NHCs to be used to build up bimetallic and multimetallic architectures. This minireview covers the development of functionalised NHC ligands that incorporate additional donor sites in order to coordinate two or more metal atoms. This can be through the N-atom of the NHC ring, through a donor group attached to the N-atom or the carbon backbone, coordination of the π-bond or an annulated π-donor on the backbone, or through direct metalation of the backbone.

Abstract
Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) synthesized by the metal vapor synthesis technique were supported on poly(4-vinylpyridine) 2% cross-linked with divinylbenzene (Pd/PVPy). Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of small metal nanoparticles (dm = 2.9 nm) highly dispersed on the PVPy. The Pd/PVPy system showed high catalytic efficiency in Suzuki-Miyaura carbon–carbon coupling reactions of both non-activated and deactivated aromatic iodides and bromides with aryl boronic acids, carried out under an air atmosphere. The high turnover of the catalyst and the ability of the PVPy resin to retain active Pd species are highlighted. By comparing the catalytic performances of Pd/PVPy with those observed by using commercially available Pd-based supported catalysts, the reported system showed higher selectivity and lower Pd leaching.

Abstract
A series of cationic Ru(ii)(η6-p-cymene) complexes with thioether-functionalised N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been prepared and fully characterized. Steric and electronic influence of the R thioether substituent on the coordination of the sulfur atom was investigated. The molecular structure of three of them has been determined by means of X-ray diffractrometry and confirmed the bidentate (κ2-C,S) coordination mode of the ligand. Interestingly, only a single diastereomer, as an enantiomeric couple, was observed in the solid state for complexes 1c, 1i and 1j. DFT calculations established a low energy inversion barrier between the two diastereomers through a sulfur pyramidal inversion pathway with R donating group while a dissociative/associative mechanism is more likely with R substituents that contain electron withdrawing group, thus suggesting that the only species observed by the 1H-NMR correspond to an average resonance position of a fluxional mixtures of isomers. All these complexes were found to catalyse the oxydant-free double dehydrogenation of primary amine into nitrile. Ru complex bearing NHC-functionalised S-tBu group was further investigated in a wide range of amines and was found more selective for alkyl amine substrates than for benzylamine derivatives. Finally, preliminary results of the biological effects on various human cancer cells of four selected Ru complexes are reported.

Abstract
Porous organometallic polymers (POMPs) with hierarchical pore structures, high specific surface areas, and atomically dispersed metal (Ir, Pd, Ru) centers are successfully fabricated by a facile one-pot method through direct knitting of diverse N-heterocyclic carbene metal (NHC-M) complexes. These polymers can function as recyclable solid single-site catalysts and exhibit excellent catalytic activity and selectivity in both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions even at ppm-level catalyst loadings. Remarkably, a record turnover number (TON) of 1.01 × 106 is achieved in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone, which is 750 times higher than that attained with corresponding bis-NHC-Ir complex.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of the new Ir(I)-complexes [IrCl(cod)(Bnmim)], [Ir(cod)(emim)(PPh3)]Cl and [Ir(cod)(Bnmim)(mtppms)] are reported. The zwitterionic complexes [Ir(cod)(NHC)(mtppms)] and Na2[Ir(cod)(NHC)(mtppts)] (NHC = emim, bmim or Bnmim; mtppms-Na and mtppts-Na3 = sodium salts of mono- and trisulfonated triphenylphosphine, respectively) were found to be effective precatalysts for transfer hydrogenation of aromatic and aliphatic ketones in basic 2-propanol-water mixtures with initial turnover frequencies up to 510 h−1 at 80 °C, and their catalytic performances were compared to those of [IrCl(cod)(NHC)] complexes (NHC = emim, bmim, Bnmim, IMes) and [Ir(cod)(emim)(PPh3)]Cl. Three of the catalysts were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reaction rates of the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone and benzophenone showed strong dependence on the water concentration of the solvent, indicating preferential solvation of the catalytically active metal complexes.
