Non-covalent intramolecular interactions through ligand-design promoting efficient photoluminescence from transition metal complexes

Conformation-Associated C···dz2-PtII Tetrel Bonding: The Case of Cyclometallated Platinum(II) Complex with 4-Cyanopyridyl Urea Ligand

The nucleophilic addition of 3-(4-cyanopyridin-2-yl)-1,1-dimethylurea (1) to cis-[Pt(CNXyl)2Cl2] (2) gave a new cyclometallated compound 3. It was characterized by NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, 195Pt) and high-resolution mass spectrometry, as well as crystallized to obtain two crystalline forms (3 and 3·2MeCN), whose structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. In the crystalline structure of 3, two conformers (3A and 3B) were identified, while the structure 3·2MeCN had only one conformer 3A. The conformers differed by orientation of the N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl moiety relative to the metallacycle plane. In both crystals 3 and 3·2MeCN, the molecules of the Pt(II) complex are associated into supramolecular dimers, either {3A}2 or {3B}2, via stacking interactions between the planes of two metal centers, which are additionally supported by hydrogen bonding. The theoretical consideration, utilizing a number of computational approaches, demonstrates that the C···dz2(Pt) interaction makes a significant contribution in the total stacking forces in the geometrically optimized dimer [3A]2 and reveals the dz2(Pt)→π*(PyCN) charge transfer (CT). The presence of such CT process allowed for marking the C···Pt contact as a new example of a rare studied phenomenon, namely, tetrel bonding, in which the metal site acts as a Lewis base (an acceptor of noncovalent interaction).

Palladium and platinum complexes based on pyridine bases induced anticancer effectiveness via apoptosis protein signaling in cancer cells

Palladium and platinum complexes, especially those that include cisplatin, can be useful chemotherapeutic drugs. Alternatives that have less adverse effects and require lower dosages of treatment could be provided by complexes containing pyridine bases. The complexes [Pd(SCN)2(4-Acpy)2] (1), [Pd(N3)2(4-Acpy)2] (2) [Pd(paOH)2].2Cl (3) and [Pt(SCN)2(paO)2] (4) were prepared by self-assembly method at ambient temperature; (4-Acpy = 4-acetylpyridine and paOH = pyridine-2-carbaldehyde-oxime). The structure of complexes 1-4 was confirmed using spectroscopic and X-ray crystallography methods. Complexes 1-4 have similar features in isomerism that include the trans coordination geometry of pyridine ligands with Pd or Pt ion. The 3D network structure of complexes 1-4 was constructed by an infinite number of discrete mononuclear molecules extending via H-bonds. The Pd and Pt complexes 1-4 with pyridine ligands were assessed on MCF-7, T47D breast cancer cells and HCT116 colon cancer cells. The study evaluated cell death through apoptosis and cell cycle phases in MCF-7 cells treated with palladium or platinum conjugated with pyridine base. Upon treatment of MCF-7 with these complexes, the expression of apoptotic signals (Bcl2, p53, Bax and c-Myc) and cell cycle signals (p16, CDK1A, CDK1B) were evaluated. Compared to other complexes and cisplatin, IC50 of complex 1 was lowest in MCF-7 cells and complex 2 in T47D cells. Complex 4 has the highest effectiveness on HCT116. The selective index (SI) of complexes 1-4 has a value of more than two for all cancer cell lines, indicating that the complexes were less toxic to normal cells when given the same dose. MCF-7 cells treated with complex 2 and platinum complex 4 exhibited the highest level of early apoptosis. p16 may be signal arrest cells in Sub G, which was observed in cells treated with palladium complexes that suppress excessive cell proliferation. High c-Myc expression of treated cells with four complexes 1-4 and cisplatin could induce p53. All complexes 1-4 elevated the expression of Bax and triggered by the tumor suppressor gene p53. p53 was downregulating the expression of Bcl2.

Enhanced luminescence properties through heavy ancillary ligands in [Pt(C^N^C)(L)] complexes, L = AsPh3 and SbPh3

In the frame of our research aiming to develop efficient triplet-emitting materials, we are exploring the concept of introducing additional heavy atoms into cyclometalated transition metal complexes to enhance intersystem-crossing (ISC) and thus triplet emission through increased spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In an in-depth proof-of-principle study we investigated the double cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes [Pt(C^N^C)(PnPh3)] (HC^N^CH = 2,6-diphenyl-pyridine (H2dpp) or dibenzoacridine (H2dba); Pn = pnictogen atoms P, As, Sb, or Bi) through a combined experimental and theoretical approach. The derivatives containing Pn = P, As, and Sb were synthesised and characterised comprehensively using single crystal X-ray diffraction (scXRD), UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Across the series P < As < Sb, a red-shift is observed concerning absorption and emission maxima as well as optical and electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gaps. Increased photoluminescence quantum yields ΦL and radiative rates kr from mixed metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT)/ligand centred (LC) triplet states are observed for the heavier homologues. Transient absorption spectroscopy showed processes in the ps range that were assigned to the population of the T1 state by ISC. The heavy PnPh3 ancillary ligands are found to enhance the emission efficiency due to both higher Pt-Pn bond strength and stronger SOC related to increased MLCT character of the excited states. The experimental findings are mirrored in hybrid (TD-)DFT calculations. This allowed for extrapolation to the rather elusive Bi derivatives, which were synthetically not accessible. This shortcoming is attributed to the transmetalation of phenyl groups from BiPh3 to Pt, as supported by experimental NMR/MS as well as DFT studies.

Reblooming of the cis-Bis(2-phenylpyridine) Platinum(II) Complex: Synthesis Updating, Aggregation-Induced Emission, Electroluminescence, and Cell Imaging

Studies on the syntheses, photophysical properties, and applications of cis-bis(2-phenylpyridine) platinum(II) complex (Pt(ppy)2) family are of great importance, but very limited progress has been achieved to date. Herein, a one-pot method was established for the syntheses of Pt(ppy)2-type complexes Pt-ppy and Pt-tBu. These two compounds were nonemissive in dilute solutions. However, they produced intense red and deep-red phosphorescence in the aggregation and film states, with lifetimes and quantum yields up to 1.92 μs and 70%, respectively, exhibiting unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. According to the experimental and theoretical studies, molecular configuration transformation (MCT) in the excited state may occur because of the d-d transition from the Pt center, causing nonradiative transitions in the solution. Nevertheless, the MCT would be largely restricted by the intermolecular interactions or rigid matrix, thereby enabling efficient phosphorescence in the aggregation state and in the PMMA films. Consequently, the AIE characteristics of Pt-ppy and Pt-tBu probably result from the restriction of molecular configuration transformation (RMCT). Due to the π-π and/or weak Pt-Pt interactions and the concentration-dependent emission characteristics, they emit deep-red and NIR emissions generated by excimer and/or MMLCT emitting species. Inspired by their AIE features, electroluminescence and cell imaging applications are explored. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study on the synthesis optimization, photophysical properties, AIE characteristics, and applications of the Pt(ppy)2-type complexes, which may rebloom the research studies on this type of Pt(II) complex family and provide valuable insights on the development of phosphorescent AIE metal-organic complexes.

X/Y platinum(II) complexes: some features of supramolecular assembly via halogen bonding

Four series of new luminescent cyclometalated complexes [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] (HC^N = 2-phenylpyridine (Hppy), 2-(1-benzofuran-3-yl)pyridine (Hbfpy), methyl-2-phenylquinoline-4-carboxylate (Hmpqc), 2-(1-benzothiophen-3-yl)pyridine (Hbtpy), IPy = 4-iodopyridine, and Y = Cl, Br, I) have been investigated as X/Y 'building blocks' for the construction of a supramolecular network utilizing the I atom in IPy as a halogen bond (XB) donor (the X atom). The σ-hole of the X atom was found to provide non-covalent X⋯Y, X⋯Pt and X⋯π (π system of the metalated chelate ring) interactions for the complexes in the crystal state. NBO analysis confirms donation of the platinum electron density to iodine upon the X⋯Pt interaction. The nature of the X counterpart in XB depends on the nature of the Y atom and the cyclometalating ligand of the Pt(II) complex. DFT calculations show that the HOMO of [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] in the S0 state is delocalized over Pt, Y and a C-coordinating fragment of C^N, while the LUMO in most complexes is formed by the Py orbitals of IPy. However, the α-HOMO in the lowest triplet state of [Pt(C^N)(IPy)Y] contains no contribution of the IPy wavefunctions. All Pt(II) complexes exhibited triplet luminescence in solution and in the solid state (Φ up to 0.129), which is determined by the nature of the C^N ligand. The emission profile is independent of the nature of the ligand Y, while the quantum yield decreases from Cl to I. Accordingly, on the basis of DFT calculation, this emission is interpreted as a C^N intraligand charge transfer predominantly. The XB formation did not show an effect on the luminescence of the complexes in the solid phase, however grinding of crystals results in an increase of brightness.

Synthesis and photometric properties of efficient white-emitting phosphor of M-AMG transition metal complexes for OLED applications

Progression in lighting sources mainly depended on new, robust energy-efficient diodes due to their advanced photometric properties. All organic light-emitting sources are constant energy-efficient devices and will be the light of the future. We explore the potential of transition metal complexes by focusing on cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper (II) with aminoguanidine naphthoate as white phosphors in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The phosphors synthesized at optimized temperature were characterized structurally and thermally by spectral, thermal, and diffraction techniques. The photophysical studies of the target compound in several organic solvents having divergent polarity were also studied, and the results were exhibited. Photometric properties of the complexes were studied using photoluminescence, CIE (Commission internationale de l'éclairage) chromaticity coordinates, correlated color temperature, color purity, Duv, and TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) to verify the applicability of complexes as phosphors. Excellent luminescence property with a high coloring index for (Cu(2NA-AMG-2H2 O)) opens the advanced avenue for light sources and serves as vital constituents for light-emitting diodes.

Crystallographic Aspects, Photophysical Properties, and Theoretical Survey of Tetrachlorometallates of Group 12 Metals [Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II)] with a Triply Protonated 2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine Ligand

Zn(II) (complex 1), Cd(II) (complex 2), and Hg(II) (complex 3) complexes have been synthesized using a triply protonated tptz (H₃tptz³⁺) ligand and characterized mainly by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The general formula of all of the complexes is (H₃tptz)³⁺·Cl^-·[MCl₄]^2-·nH₂O (where n = 1, 1.5, and 1.5 for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively). The crystallographic analysis reveals that the anion···π, anion···π⁺, and several hydrogen bonding interactions play a fundamental role in the stabilization of the self-assembled architectures that in turn help to enhance the dimensionality of all of the complexes. In addition, Hirshfeld surfaces and fingerprint plots have been deployed here to visualize the similarities and differences in hydrogen bonding interactions in 1-3, which are very important in forming supramolecular architectures. A density functional theory (DFT) study has been used to analyze and rationalize the supramolecular interactions by using molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces and combined QTAIM/NCI plots. Then, the device parameters for the complexes (1-3) have been thoroughly investigated by fabricating a Schottky barrier diode (SBD) on an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. It has been observed that the device made from complex 2 is superior to those from complexes 1 and 3, which has been explained in terms of band gaps, differences in the electronegativities of the central metal atoms, and the better supramolecular interactions involved. Finally, theoretical calculations have also been performed to analyze the experimental differences in band gaps as well as electrical conductivities observed for all of the complexes. Henceforth, the present work combined supramolecular, photophysical, and theoretical studies regarding group 12 metals in a single frame.

Synthesis of a platinacycle: determination of the structure and examination of the photophysical properties based on DFT calculations

Platinum-containing macrocycles (platinacycles) have gained attention due to their unique photoelectric properties. In the present study, a novel conjugated platinacycle was synthesized by the dehydrochlorination coupling reaction of a bipyridine dichloroplatinum(II) complex and a 3,6-diethynylcarbazol derivative. The structure of the platinacycle was confirmed by ¹H/¹³C, ¹H-¹H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, DEPT NMR spectroscopies in conjunction with DFT calculations, IR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The platinacycle exhibited a UV-vis absorption around 540 nm assignable to ligand-ligand charge transfer, and birefringence in DMF, possibly due to alignment of molecules.

Structure, Optical and Magnetic Properties of Two Isomeric 2-Bromomethylpyridine Cu(II) Complexes [Cu(C6H9NBr)2(NO3)2] with Very Different Binding Motives

Two isomeric 2-bromomethylpyridine Cu(II) complexes [Cu(C₆H₉NBr)₂(NO₃)₂] with 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine (L¹) and 2-bromo-4-methylpyridine (L²) were synthesized as air-stable blue materials in good yields. The crystal structures were different with [Cu(L¹)₂(NO₃)₂] (CuL¹) crystallizing in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c, while the 4-methyl derivative CuL² was solved and refined in triclinic P1¯. The orientation of the Br substituents in the molecular structure (anti (CuL¹) vs. syn (CuL²) conformations) and the geometry around Cu(II) in an overall 4 + 2 distorted coordination was very different with two secondary (axially elongated) Cu-O bonds on each side of the CuN₂O₂ basal plane in CuL¹ or both on one side in CuL². The two Br substituents in CuL² come quite close to the Cu(II) centers and to each other (Br⋯Br ~3.7 Å). Regardless of these differences, the thermal behavior (TG/DTA) of both materials is very similar with decomposition starting at around 160 °C and CuO as the final product. In contrast to this, FT-IR and Raman frequencies are markedly different for the two isomers and the UV-vis absorption spectra in solution show marked differences in the π-π* absorptions at 263 (CuL²) or 270 (CuL¹) nm and in the ligand-to-metal charge transfer bands at around 320 nm which are pronounced for CuL¹ with the higher symmetry at the Cu(II) center, but very weak for CuL². The T-dependent susceptibility measurements also show very similar results (µ_eff = 1.98 µ_B for CuL¹ and 2.00 µ_B for CuL² and very small Curie-Weiss constants of about -1. The EPR spectra of both complexes show axial symmetry, very similar averaged g values of 2.123 and 2.125, respectively, and no hyper-fine splitting.

Triplet Emitting C^N^C Cyclometalated Dibenzo[c,h]Acridine Pt(II) Complexes

In a series of Pt(II) complexes [Pt(dba)(L)] containing the very rigid, dianionic, bis-cyclometalating, tridentate C^N^C2− heterocyclic ligand dba2− (H2dba = dibenzo[c,h]acridine), the coligand (ancillary ligand) L = dmso, PPh3, CNtBu and Me2Imd (N,N’-dimethylimidazolydene) was varied in order to improve its luminescence properties. Beginning with the previously reported dmso complex, we synthesized the PPh3, CNtBu and Me2Imd derivatives and characterized them by elemental analysis, 1H (and 31P) NMR spectroscopy and MS. Cyclic voltammetry showed partially reversible reduction waves ranging between −1.89 and −2.10 V and increasing along the series Me2Imd < dmso ≈ PPh3 < CNtBu. With irreversible oxidation waves ranging between 0.55 (L = Me2Imd) and 1.00 V (dmso), the electrochemical gaps range between 2.65 and 2.91 eV while increasing along the series Me2Imd < CNtBu < PPh3 < dmso. All four complexes show in part vibrationally structured long-wavelength absorption bands peaking at around 530 nm. TD-DFT calculated spectra agree quite well with the experimental spectra, with only a slight redshift. The photoluminescence spectra of all four compounds are very similar. In fluid solution at 298 K, they show broad, only partially structured bands, with maxima at around 590 nm, while in frozen glassy matrices at 77 K, slightly blue-shifted (~580 nm) bands with clear vibronic progressions were found. The photoluminescence quantum yields ΦL ranged between 0.04 and 0.24, at 298 K, and between 0.80 and 0.90 at 77 K. The lifetimes τ at 298 K ranged between 60 and 14040 ns in Ar-purged solutions and increased from 17 to 43 µs at 77 K. The TD-DFT calculated emission spectra are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings. In terms of high ΦL and long τ, the dmso and PPh3 complexes outperform the CNtBu and Me2Imd derivatives. This is remarkable in view of the higher ligand strength of Me2Imd, compared with all other coligands, as concluded from the electrochemical data.

Synthesis, Structure and Photoluminescence Properties of Cd and Cd-Ln Pentafluorobenzoates with 2,2′:6′,2′-Terpyridine Derivatives

Six new complexes [Cd(tpy)(pfb)2] (1, tpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine), [Ln2Cd2(tpy)2(pfb)10] (Ln = Eu (2Eu), Tb (2Tb)), [Ln2Cd2(tbtpy)2(pfb)10]·2MeCN (Ln = Eu (3Eu), Tb (3Tb), tbtpy = 4,4′,4″-tri-tert-butyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine), [Eu2Cd2(tppz)(pfb)10]n (4, tppz = 2,3,5,6-tetra-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazine) based on pentafluorobenzoic acid (Hpfb) have been prepared and investigated. The effect of tridentate ligands on geometry heterometallic scaffolds synthesized complexes is discussed. The supramolecular crystal structures of the new compounds are stabilized by π-π, C-F···π, C-H···O, C-H...F, F….F interactions. Non-covalent interactions have been studied using Hirschfeld surface analysis. The obtained compounds were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, luminescence spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, CHN analysis. Complexes 2Ln and 3Ln exhibit metal-centered photoluminescence, but the presence of ligand luminescence bands indicates incomplete energy transfer from the d-block to the lanthanide ion.

Photophysical Study on the Rigid Pt(II) Complex [Pt(naphen)(Cl)] (Hnaphen = Naphtho[1,2-b][1,10]Phenanthroline and Derivatives

The electrochemistry and photophysics of the Pt(II) complexes [Pt(naphen)(X)] (Hnaphen = naphtho[1,2-b][1,10]phenanthroline, X = Cl or C≡CPh) containing the rigid tridentate C^N^N-coordinating pericyclic naphen ligand was studied alongside the complexes of the tetrahydro-derivative [Pt(thnaphen)(X)] (Hthnaphen = 5,6,8,9-tetrahydro-naphtho[1,2-b][1,10]phenanthroline) and the N^C^N-coordinated complex [Pt(bdq)(Cl)] (Hbdq = benzo[1,2-h:5,4-h’]diquinoline. The cyclic voltammetry showed reversible reductions for the C^N^N complexes, with markedly fewer negative potentials (around −1.6 V vs. ferrocene) for the complexes containing the naphen ligand compared with the thnaphen derivatives (around −1.9 V). With irreversible oxidations at around +0.3 V for all of the complexes, the naphen made a difference in the electrochemical gap of about 0.3 eV (1.9 vs. 2.2 eV) compared with thnaphen. The bdq complex was completely different, with an irreversible reduction at around −2 V caused by the N^C^N coordination pattern, which lacked a good electron acceptor such as the phenanthroline unit in the C^N^N ligand naphen. Long-wavelength UV-Vis absorption bands were found around 520 to 530 nm for the C^N^N complexes with the C≡CPh coligand and were red-shifted when compared with the Cl derivatives. The N^C^N-coordinated bdq complex was markedly blue-shifted (493 nm). The steady-state photoluminescence spectra showed poorly structured emission bands peaking at around 630 nm for the two naphen complexes and 570 nm for the thnaphen derivatives. The bdq complex showed a pronounced vibrational structure and an emission maximum at 586 nm. Assuming mixed ³LC/³MLCT excited states, the vibronic progression for the N^C^N bdq complex indicated a higher LC character than assumed for the C^N^N-coordinated naphen and thnaphen complexes. The blue-shift was a result of the different N^C^N vs. C^N^N coordination. The photoluminescence lifetimes and quantum yields Φ_L massively increased from solutions at 298 K (0.06 to 0.24) to glassy frozen matrices at 77 K (0.80 to 0.95). The nanosecond time-resolved study on [Pt(naphen)(Cl)] showed a phosphorescence emission signal originating from the mixed ³LC/³MLCT with an emission lifetime of around 3 µs.

Polymorph-Dependent Phosphorescence of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes and Its Relation to Non-covalent Interactions

Cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [Pt(ppy)Cl(CNAr)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridinato-C²,N; Ar = C₆H₄-2-I 1, C₆H₄-4-I 2, C₆H₃-2-F-4-I 3, and C₆H₃-2,4-I₂ 4) bearing ancillary isocyanide ligands were obtained by the bridge-splitting reaction between the dimer [Pt(ppy)(μ-Cl)]₂ and 2 equiv any one of the corresponding CNAr. Complex 2 was crystallized in two polymorphic forms, namely, 2 ^I and 2 ^II, exhibiting green (emission quantum yield of 0.5%) and orange (emission quantum yield of 12%) phosphorescence, respectively. Structure-directing non-covalent contacts in these polymorphs were verified by a combination of experimental (X-ray diffraction) and theoretical methods (NCIplot analysis, combined electron localization function (ELF), and Bader quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM analysis)). A noticeable difference in the spectrum of non-covalent interactions of 2 ^I and 2 ^II is seen in the Pt···Pt interactions in 2 ^II and absence of these metallophilic contacts in 2 ^I. The other solid luminophores, namely, 1, 3 ^I-II, 4, and 4·CHCl₃, exhibit green luminescence; their structures include intermolecular C-I···Cl-Pt halogen bonds as the structure-directing interactions. Crystals of 1, 2 ^I, 3 ^I, 3 ^II, 4, and 4·CHCl₃ demonstrated a reversible mechanochromic color change achieved by mechanical grinding (green to orange) and solvent adsorption (orange to green).

Multistimuli-Responsive Properties of Aggregated Isocyanide Cycloplatinated(II) Complexes

Here, we describe the neutral cyclometalated tert-butylisocyanide Pt^II complexes, [Pt(C^∧N)Cl(CNBu^t)] 1, the double salts [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂][Pt(C^∧N)Cl₂] 2, and the cationic complexes [Pt(C^∧N)(CNBu^t)₂]ClO₄ 3 [C∧N = difluorophenylpyridine (dfppy, a), 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppy-CHO, b)]. A comparative study of the pseudopolymorphs 1a, 1a·CHCl₃, 1b, 1b·0.5Toluene, 1b·0.5PhF, and 3a·0.25CH₂Cl₂ reveals strong aggregation through Pt···Pt and/or π···π stacking interactions to give a variety of distinctive one-dimensional (1D) infinite chains, which modulate the photoluminescent properties. This intermolecular long-range aggregate formation is the main origin of the photoluminescent behavior of 1a and 1b complexes, which exhibit highly sensitive and reversible responses to multiple external stimuli including different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), solvents, temperatures, and pressures, with distinct color and phosphorescent color switching from green to red. Furthermore, complex 1b undergoes supramolecular self-assembly via Pt···Pt and/or π···π interactions into a polymer thin polystyrene (PS) film 10 wt % in response to toluene vapors, and 3a exhibits vapochromic and vapoluminescent behavior. Theoretical simulations on the dimer, trimer, and tetramer models of 1a and 1b have been carried out to get insight into the photophysical properties in the aggregated solid state.

Site-Selective C-H Functionalization of Arenes Enabled by Noncovalent Interactions

The direct metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization of arenes has emerged as a powerful tool for streamlining the synthesis of complex molecular scaffolds. However, despite the different chemical environments, the energy values of all C-H bonds are within a fairly narrow range; hence, the regioselective C-H bond functionalization poses a great challenge. The use of covalently bound directing groups is to date the most exploited approach to achieve regioselective C-H functionalization of arenes. However, the required installation and removal of those groups is a serious drawback. Recently, new strategies for regioselective metal-catalyzed distal C-H functionalization of arenes based on noncovalent forces (hydrogen bonds, Lewis acid-base interactions, ionic or electrostatic forces, etc.) have been developed to tackle these issues. Nowadays, these approaches have already showcased impressive advances. Therefore, the aim of this mini-review is to cover chronologically how these groundbreaking strategies evolved over the past decade.

Lewis Pair-Functionalized Pt(II) Complexes with Tunable Emission Color and Triplet-State Properties

Two emissive Pt(II) complexes containing dynamic "flexible" Lewis pair (FlexLP) ligands are reported. The FlexLP ligand encompasses a diphenylphosphine oxide Lewis base and a dimesitylborane Lewis acid attached to a bithiophene scaffold, which can switch between an open unbound Lewis pair and a bound P-O-B Lewis adduct depending on the hydrogen bond-donating (HBD) strength of the solvent. [Pt(FlexLP)₂] contains two FlexLP ligands, and [Pt(FlexLP)(Py)] contains one FlexLP ligand and one pyrene ligand. UV-vis absorption and fluorescence studies demonstrate that the FlexLP ligands switch between the open Lewis pair and the closed Lewis adduct in MeOH, a strong HBD solvent, and acetone, a weak HBD solvent, respectively, and exhibit tunable emission color depending on the acetone/MeOH solvent ratio. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals a large difference in the triplet-state lifetime depending on the conformation of the FlexLP ligands for both complexes. In the closed form, the triplet-state lifetimes of the two complexes are over an order of magnitude longer compared to that of the complexes in the open conformation. Calculations of optimized geometries suggest that this difference in triplet-state lifetime is due to a difference in the thiophene-thiophene torsion angle between the two conformations.

Tuning the luminescence of transition metal complexes with acyclic diaminocarbene ligands

Studies of Nature of Uncommon Bifurcated I-I···(I-M) Metal-Involving Noncovalent Interaction in Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Isocyanide Cocrystals

Two isostructural trans-[MI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 (M = Pd or Pt; CNXyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide) metallopolymeric cocrystals containing uncommon bifurcated iodine···(metal-iodide) contact were obtained. In addition to classical halogen bonding, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a rare type of metal-involved stabilizing contact in both cocrystals. The nature of the noncovalent contact was studied computationally (via DFT, electrostatic surface potential, electron localization function, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and noncovalent interactions plot methods). Studies confirmed that the I···I halogen bond is the strongest noncovalent interaction in the systems, followed by weaker I···M interaction. The electrophilic and nucleophilic nature of atoms participating in I···M interaction was studied with ED/ESP minima analysis. In trans-[PtI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 cocrystal, Pt atoms act as weak nucleophiles in I···Pt interaction. In the case of trans-[PdI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 cocrystal, electrophilic/nucleophilic roles of Pd and I are not clear, and thus the quasimetallophilic nature of the I···Pd interaction was suggested.

Photoluminescence of Ni(II), Pd(II), and Pt(II) Complexes [M(Me2dpb)Cl] Obtained from C‒H Activation of 1,5-Di(2-pyridyl)-2,4-dimethylbenzene (Me2dpbH)

The three complexes [M(Me₂dpb)Cl] (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) containing the tridentate N,C,N-cyclometalating 3,5-dimethyl-1,5-dipyridyl-phenide ligand (Me₂dpb^-) were synthesised using a base-assisted C‒H activation method. Oxidation potentials from cyclic voltammetry increased along the series Pt < Ni < Pd from 0.15 to 0.74 V. DFT calculations confirmed the essentially ligand-centred π*-type character of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) for all three complexes in agreement with the invariant reduction processes. For the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO), contributions from metal d_yz, phenyl C4, C2, C1, and C6, and Cl p_z orbitals were found. As expected, the d_z² (HOMO-1 for Ni) is stabilised for the Pd and Pt derivatives, while the antibonding d_x²_-y² orbital is de-stabilised for Pt and Pd compared with Ni. The long-wavelength UV-vis absorption band energies increase along the series Ni < Pt < Pd. The lowest-energy TD-DFT-calculated state for the Ni complex has a pronounced d_z²-type contribution to the overall metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) character. For Pt and Pd, the d_z² orbital is energetically not available and a strongly mixed Cl-to-π*/phenyl-to-π*/M(d_yz)-to-π* (XLCT/ILCT/MLCT) character is found. The complex [Pd(Me₂dpb)Cl] showed a structured emission band in a frozen glassy matrix at 77 K, peaking at 468 nm with a quantum yield of almost unity as observed for the previously reported Pt derivative. No emission was observed from the Ni complex at 77 or 298 K. The TD-DFT-calculated states using the TPSSh functional were in excellent agreement with the observed absorption energies and also clearly assessed the nature of the so-called "dark", i.e., d‒d*, excited configurations to lie low for the Ni complex (≥3.18 eV), promoting rapid radiationless relaxation. For the Pd(II) and Pt(II) derivatives, the "dark" states are markedly higher in energy with ≥4.41 eV (Pd) and ≥4.86 eV (Pt), which is in perfect agreement with the similar photophysical behaviour of the two complexes at low temperatures.

Functional Materials Based on Cyclometalated Platinum(II) β-Diketonate Complexes: A Review of Structure-Property Relationships and Applications

Square planar organoplatinum(II) complexes have garnered immense interest in the area of materials research. The combination of the Pt(II) fragment with mono-, bi- tri- and tetradentate organic ligands gives rise to a large variety of complexes with intriguing properties, especially cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes in which ligands are connected through covalent bonds demonstrate higher stability, excellent photoluminescence properties, and diverse applications. The properties and applications of the Pt(II)-based materials can be smartly fine-tuned via a judicious selection of the cyclometalating as well as ancillary ligands. In this review, attempts have been made to provide a brief review of the recent developments of neutral Pt(II) organometallic complexes bearing bidentate cyclometalating ligands and β-diketonate ancillary ligands, i.e., (C^N)Pt(O^O) and (C^C)Pt(O^O) derivatives. Both small (monomeric, dimeric) and large (polymeric) materials have been considered. We critically assessed the role of functionalities (ligands) on photophysical properties and their impact on applications.

Transition Metal Chain Complexes Supported by Soft Donor Assembling Ligands

The chemistry of discrete molecular chains constituted by metals in low oxidation states, displaying metal-metal proximity and stabilized by suitable metal-bridging, assembling ligands comprising at least one soft donor atom is comprehensively reviewed; complexes with a single (hard or soft) bridging atom (e.g., μ-halide, μ-sulfide, or μ-PR₂ etc.) as well as "closed" metal arrays (that fall in the realm of cluster chemistry) are excluded. The focus is on transition metal-based systems, with few excursions to cases combining transition and post-transition elements. Most relevant supporting ligands have neutral C, P, O, or S donor (mainly, N-heterocyclic carbene, phosphine, ether, thioether) or anionic donor (mainly phenyl, ylide, silyl, phosphide, thiolate) groups. A supporting-ligand-based classification of the metal chains is introduced, using as the classifying parameter the number of "bites" (i.e., ligand bridges) subtending each intermetallic separation. The ligands are further grouped according to the number of donor atoms interacting with the metal chain (called denticity in the following) and the column of the Periodic Table to which the set of donor atoms belongs (in ascending order). A complementary metal-based compilation of the complexes discussed is also provided in a concise tabular form.

Modulation of Metallophilic and π-π Interactions in Platinum Cyclometalated Luminophores with Halogen Bonding

Luminescent cyclometalated complexes [M(C^N^N)CN] (M=Pt, Pd; HC^N^N=pyridinyl- (M=Pt 1, Pd 5), benzyltriazolyl- (M=Pt 2), indazolyl- (M=Pt 3, Pd 6), pyrazolyl-phenylpyridine (M=Pt 4)) decorated with cyanide ligand, have been explored as nucleophilic building blocks for the construction of halogen-bonded (XB) adducts using IC₆ F₅ as an XB donor. The negative electrostatic potential of the CN group afforded CN⋅⋅⋅I noncovalent interactions for platinum complexes 1-3; the energies of XB contacts are comparable to those of metallophilic bonding according to QTAIM analysis. Embedding the chromophore units into XB adducts 1-3⋅⋅⋅IC₆ F₅ has little effect on the charge distribution, but strongly affects Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt bonding and π-stacking, which lead to excited states of MMLCT (metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer) origin. The energies of these states and the photoemissive properties of the crystalline materials are primarily determined by the degree of aggregation of the luminophores via metal-metal interactions. The adduct formation depends on the nature of the metal and the structure of the metalated ligand, the variation of which can yield dynamic XB-supported systems, exemplified by thermally regulated transition 3↔3⋅⋅⋅IC₆ F₅ .

Modulation of luminescence properties for [cyclometalated]-PtII(isocyanide) complexes upon co-crystallisation with halosubstituted perfluorinated arenes

C–X⋯Cl–Pt Halogen bonds and πh⋯d_z2[Pt^II] contacts led to the 2-fold increase of phosphorescence quantum yields for [cyclometalated]-Pt^II(isocyanide) complexes upon co-crystallisation with halosubstituted perfluorinated arenes.
