Optimizing white light emission in Dy(iii) complexes: impact of energy transfer from mono and bidentate ligands on luminescence

Complexes of dysprosium(iii) ions with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione featuring various mono and bi-dentate neutral ligands have been prepared and thoroughly investigated. The synthesized complexes exhibit an octa-coordinated environment, achieved by stoichiometrically combining organic ligands and Dy(iii) ions. This octa-coordination environment of Dy(iii) ion was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. Near-white light (NWL) is emitted when complexes were exposed to UV radiation, indicating a significant flow of energy from the sensitizing moieties towards the Dy(iii) ion. This NWL emission might have resulted due to a balance between the intensities corresponding to emission peaks at 480 nm (blue) and 575 nm (yellow) in Dy1-Dy3. Emission spectra recorded at different excitation wavelength were utilized to study the tunability of CIE color coordinates. In addition to their high thermal stability, the complexes display bipolar paramagnetic shifts in their NMR spectra. The 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition, contributing ∼62% of the total emission, stands out as a promising candidate for laser amplification due to its dominance in the emission spectra. Additionally, NWL emission observed in a solid Dy(iii) complex opens intriguing possibilities for its application in next-generation white-light emitting devices.

Magnetic Supramolecular Spherical Arrays: Direct Formation of Micellar Cubic Mesophase by Lanthanide Metallomesogens with 7-Coordination Geometry

Here, an unprecedented phenomenon in which 7-coordinate lanthanide metallomesogens, which align via hydrogen bonds mediated by coordinated H2O molecules, form micellar cubic mesophases at room temperature, creating body-centered cubic (BCC)-type supramolecular spherical arrays, is reported. The results of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that spherical assemblies of three complexes surrounded by an amorphous alkyl domain spontaneously align in an energetically stable orientation to form the BCC structure. This phenomenon differs greatly from the conventional self-assembling behavior of 6-coordinated metallomesogens, which form columnar assemblies due to strong intermolecular interactions. Since the magnetic and luminescent properties of different lanthanides vary, adding arbitrary functions to spherical arrays is possible by selecting suitable lanthanides to be used. The method developed in this study using 7-coordinate lanthanide metallomesogens as building blocks is expected to lead to the rational development of micellar cubic mesophases.

Aggregation induced emission dynamic chiral europium(III) complexes with excellent circularly polarized luminescence and smart sensors

The synthesis of dynamic chiral lanthanide complex emitters has always been difficult. Herein, we report three pairs of dynamic chiral EuIII complex emitters (R/S-Eu-R-1, R = Et/Me; R/S-Eu-Et-2) with aggregation-induced emission. In the molecular state, these EuIII complexes have almost no obvious emission, while in the aggregate state, they greatly enhance the EuIII emission through restriction of intramolecular rotation and restriction of intramolecular vibration. The asymmetry factor and the circularly polarized luminescence brightness are as high as 0.64 (5D0 → 7F1) and 2429 M-1cm-1 of R-Eu-Et-1, achieving a rare double improvement. R-Eu-Et-1/2 exhibit excellent sensing properties for low concentrations of CuII ions, and their detection limits are as low as 2.55 and 4.44 nM, respectively. Dynamic EuIII complexes are constructed by using chiral ligands with rotor structures or vibration units, an approach that opens a door for the construction of dynamic chiral luminescent materials.

Luminescent Ln3+-based silsesquioxanes with a β-diketonate antenna ligand: toward the design of efficient temperature sensors

We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO1.5)8(LnO1.5)4(O)(C5H8O2)6(EtOH)2(CH3CN)2⋅2CH3CN (where Ln = Tb, 1; Tb/Eu, 2; and Gd, 3), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb3+ and Tb3+/Eu3+-related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions. Compound 3 is used to assess the energies of the triplet states of the acac ligand. For compound 1, theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy transfer and multiphonon rates indicate a thermal balance between the 5D4 Stark components, while the mixed Tb3+/Eu3+ analog 2, with a Tb:Eu ratio of 3:1, showcases intra-cluster Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer, calculated theoretically as a function of temperature. By utilizing the intensity ratio between the 5D4→7F5 (Tb3+) and 5D0→7F2 (Eu3+) transitions in the range 11-373 K, we demonstrate the realization of a ratiometric luminescent thermometer with compound 2, operating in the range 11-373 K with a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.0% K-1 at 373 K. These findings highlight the potential of cage-like silsesquioxanes as versatile materials for optical sensing-enabled applications.

Structure-changeable luminescent Eu(III) complex as a human cancer grade probing system for brain tumor diagnosis

Accurate determination of human tumor malignancy is important for choosing efficient and safe therapies. Bioimaging technologies based on luminescent molecules are widely used to localize and distinguish active tumor cells. Here, we report a human cancer grade probing system (GPS) using a water-soluble and structure-changeable Eu(III) complex for the continuous detection of early human brain tumors of different malignancy grades. Time-dependent emission spectra of the Eu(III) complexes in various types of tumor cells were recorded. The radiative rate constants (kr), which depend on the geometry of the Eu(III) complex, were calculated from the emission spectra. The tendency of the kr values to vary depended on the tumor cells at different malignancy grades. Between T = 0 and T = 3 h of invasion, the kr values exhibited an increase of 4% in NHA/TS (benign grade II gliomas), 7% in NHA/TSR (malignant grade III gliomas), and 27% in NHA/TSRA (malignant grade IV gliomas). Tumor cells with high-grade malignancy exhibited a rapid upward trend in kr values. The cancer GPS employs Eu(III) emissions to provide a new diagnostic method for determining human brain tumor malignancy.

Novel Lanthanide Complexes Synthesized from 3-Dimethylamino Benzoic Acid and 5,5'-Dimethyl-2,2' Bipyridine Ligand: Crystal Structure, Thermodynamics, and Fluorescence Properties

Two isostructural lanthanide complexes were synthesized by solvent evaporation with 3-dimethylaminobenzoic acid and 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine as ligands. The general formula of the structure is a [Ln(3-N,N-DMBA)3(5,5'-DM-2,2'-bipy)]2·2(3-N,N-DMHBA), Ln = (Gd(1), Tb(2)), 3-N,N-DMBA = 3-Dimethylamino benzoate, 5,5'-DM-2,2'-bipy = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2' bipyridine. Both complexes exhibited dimeric structures based on X-ray diffraction analysis. At the same time, infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to measure the spectra of the complex. A thermogravimetric infrared spectroscopy experiment was performed to investigate the thermal stability and decomposition mechanism of the complexes. Measurements of the low-temperature heat capacity of the complexes were obtained within the temperature range of 1.9 to 300 K. The thermodynamic function was calculated by heat capacity fitting. In addition, the fluorescence spectra of complex 2 were studied and the fluorescence lifetime values were determined, and the energy transfer mechanism of complex 2 was elucidated.

Novel stable ytterbium acetylacetonate-quinaldinate complexes as single-molecule magnets and surprisingly efficient luminophores

The first Yb complexes comprising a quinoline-2-carboxylate (quinaldinate, Q-) ligand, namely 1D-polymeric [Yb(acac)2(Q)]n (1, acac- is the acetylacetonate (pentane-2,4-dionate) anion) and mononuclear [Yb(acac)2(Q)(Phen)] (2, Phen is 1,10-phenanthroline), are reported. The bifunctionality of both complexes as field-induced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and near IR luminophores has been revealed. The SMM properties of 1 and 2 have been discussed in terms of the geometry and composition of the coordination environment. Also, 1 is the first example of 1D-polymeric SMMs with the capped octahedral surrounding of Yb3+. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 1 and 2 are 2 and 4%, respectively. The origins of this difference are discussed. Surprisingly, the PLQY value of 2 is high for compounds comprising a lot of C-H vibrational quenchers, being the highest one for reliably characterized Yb β-diketonate complexes, and surpassing those for complexes with a broad range of anionic ligands. In this respect, the role of the Phen ligand is to tune the coordination mode of Q- thereby decreasing the energy of coordinating C-O oscillators rather than to act as a typical antenna ligand. These results can give rise to an alternative route to elaborate efficient Yb-based luminophores via the substitution of the β-diketonate ligands controlled by the introduction of appropriate neutral ligands.

KCoO2-type layered nitrides Ca1-xEuxTiN2: structural stability, electrical properties and Eu coordination chemistry

Eu2+ was used to substitute Ca in the orthorhombic KCoO2-type layered CaTiN2 to form a Ca1-xEuxTiN2 solid solution, which showed a limited substitution around x = 0.35 with the tetragonality enhanced but the orthorhombic symmetry retained and inaccessibility for the end member EuTiN2. This was in contrast with the full solid solution Ca1-xSrxTiN2, which realized a structural transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal at x = 0.5, even though Eu2+ and Sr2+ ions have similar sizes. The Eu substitution for Ca reduced the dielectric permittivity of CaTiN2 owing to the reduced structural distortion arising from the enhanced tetragonality with the substitution. First-principle theoretical calculations on the total energies and formation energies considering the 4f electrons of Eu ions and the related magnetism were performed to understand the structural stability of the hypothetical EuTiN2. Compared with CaTiN2 and SrTiN2, EuTiN2 has much higher formation energies, making it inaccessible at high temperature. The evolutions of the experimentally observed and calculated lattice parameters of the Ca1-xEuxTiN2 solid solution showed a preference for the orthorhombic phase over the tetragonal phase for the hypothetical EuTiN2, revealing a different coordination chemistry of Eu2+-N to Eu2+-O through the comparison of the structural variations of ATiN2 and ATiO3 (A = Ca, Sr, Eu).

Nanosheets of two-dimensional photoluminescent lanthanide phosphonocarboxylate frameworks decorated with free carboxylic groups for latent fingerprint imaging

The synthesis, structural characterization, exfoliation, and photophysical studies of two-dimensional (2-D) lanthanide phosphonates, named Ln(m-pbc); [Ln(m-Hpbc)(m-H₂pbc)(H₂O)] (Ln = Eu, Tb; m-pbc = 3-phosphonobenzoic acid) based on the phosphonocarboxylate ligand, are reported. These compounds are neutral polymeric 2D layered structures with pendent uncoordinated carboxylic groups between layers. The nanosheets were obtained by a top-down strategy involving sonication-assisted solution exfoliation and characterized by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscropy, showing lateral dimensions from nano- to micro-meter scales, and thicknesses down to several layers. The photoluminescence studies demonstrate that the m-pbc ligand acts as an efficient antenna toward Eu and Tb(III) ions. The emission intensities of dimetallic compounds are clearly enhanced after incorporation of Y(III) ions due to the dilution effect. Ln(m-pbc)s were then applied for labelling latent fingerprints. It is worth noting that the reaction between active carboxylic groups and fingerprint residues benefits the labelling, showing efficient imaging for fingerprints on all kinds of material surfaces.

Two Chiral YbIII Enantiomeric Pairs with Distinct Enantiomerically Pure N-Donor Ligands Presenting Significant Differences in Photoluminescence, Circularly Polarized Luminescence, and Second-Harmonic Generation

Using enantiomerically pure bidentate and tridentate N-donor ligands (¹L_R/¹L_S and ²L_R/²L_S) to replace two coordinated H₂O molecules of Yb(tta)₃(H₂O)₂, respectively, two eight- and nine-coordinated Yb^III enantiomeric pairs, namely, Yb(tta)₃¹L_R/Yb(tta)₃¹L_S (Yb-R-1/Yb-S-1) and [Yb(tta)₃²L_R]·CH₃CN/[Yb(tta)₃²L_S]·CH₃CN (Yb-R-2/Yb-S-2), were isolated, in which Htta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone, ¹L_R/¹L_S = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinene-2,2'-bipyridine, and ²L_R/²L_S = (-)/(+)-2,6-bis(4',5'-pinene-2'-pyridyl)pyridine. Interestingly, they not only present distinct degrees of chirality but also show large differences in near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL), circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and second-harmonic generation (SHG). Eight-coordinated Yb-R-1 with an asymmetric bidentate ¹L_R ligand has a high NIR-PL quantum yield (1.26%) and a long decay lifetime (20 μs) at room temperature, being more than two times those (0.48%, 8 μs) of nine-coordinated Yb-R-2 with a C₂-symmetric tridentate ²L_R ligand. In addition, Yb-R-1 displays an efficient CPL with a luminescence dissymmetry factor g_lum = 0.077, being 4 × Yb-R-2 (0.018). In particular, Yb-R-1 presents a strong SHG response (0.8 × KDP), which is 8 × Yb-R-2 (0.1 × KDP). More remarkably, the precursor Yb(tta)₃(H₂O)₂ exhibits a strong third-harmonic generation (THG) response (41 × α-SiO₂), while the introduction of chiral N-donors results in the switching of THG to SHG. Our interesting findings provide new insights into both the functional regulation and switching in multifunctional lanthanide molecular materials.

Structural Insights and Photophysical Screening of Sm (III) Complexes with Heterocyclic Ligand for Optical Applications

Five novel bright orange color emitting Sm(III) complexes (C1-C5) have been synthesized via energy efficient and cost effective solution precipitation method with 5-phenyl 2-furoic acid as primary organic sensitizer and nitrogen donor neocuproine, 2, 2- bipyridyl, bathophenanthroline, and 1,10-phenanthroline as secondary ligands. All the newly synthesized metal complexes are thoroughly characterize to examine the appropriateness of the organic ligand for the sensitization process. All the outcomes of the various advanced and fundamental spectroscopic techniques validate the bonding of carboxylate group with the Sm(III) ion. The luminescence spectra reflects the dominance of magnetic dipole transition which designate the occurrence of harmonized chemical environment in the coordination sphere which is further validated by enhanced values of intensity ratio. These complexes possess suitable thermal stability with excellent photoluminescent features as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and photoluminescence studies. The luminescence lifetime of samarium complexes [C2-C5] is relatively long due to the synergistic effect presented by ancillary ligands. The emission color of the synthesized complexes show shift from orange to bright orange red color which is displayed through CIE color coordinates.

Modulating the Inclusive and Coordinating Ability of Thiacalix[4]arene and Its Antenna Effect on Yb3-Luminescence via Upper-Rim Substitution+

The present work introduces the series of thiacalix[4]arenes (H₄L) bearing different upper-rim substituents (R = H, Br, NO₂) for rational design of ligands providing an antenna-effect on the NIR Yb³⁺-centered luminescence of their Yb³⁺ complexes. The unusual inclusive self-assembly of H₃L⁻ (Br) through Br…π interactions is revealed through single-crystal XRD analysis. Thermodynamically favorable formation of dimeric complexes [2Yb³⁺:2HL³⁻] leads to efficient sensitizing of the Yb³⁺ luminescence for H₄L (Br, NO₂), while poor sensitizing is observed for ligand H₄L (H). X-ray analysis of the single crystal separated from the basified DMF solutions of YbCl₃ and H₄L(NO₂) has revealed the transformation of the dimeric complexes into [4Yb³⁺:2L⁴⁻] ones with a cubane-like cluster structure. The luminescence characteristics of the complexes in the solutions reveal the peculiar antenna effect of H₄L(R = NO₂), where the triplet level at 567 nm (17,637 cm⁻¹) arisen from ILCT provides efficient sensitizing of the Yb³⁺ luminescence.

Preparation of photonic molecular trains via soft-crystal polymerization of lanthanide complexes

Soft-crystals are defined as flexible molecular solids with highly ordered structures and have attracted attention in molecular sensing materials based on external triggers and environments. Here, we show the soft-crystal copolymerization of green-luminescent Tb(III) and yellow-luminescent Dy(III) coordination centers. Soft-crystal polymerization is achieved via transformation of monomeric dinuclear complexes and polymeric structures with respect to coordination number and geometry. The structural transformation is characterized using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The connected Tb(III) crystal-Dy(III) crystal show photon energy transfer from the Dy(III) centre to the Tb(III) centre under blue light excitation (selective Dy(III) centre excitation: 460 ± 10 nm). The activation energy of the energy transfer is estimated using the temperature-dependent emission lifetimes and emission quantum yields, and time-dependent density functional theory (B3LYP) calculations. Luminescence-conductive polymers, photonic molecular trains, are successfully prepared via soft-crystal polymerization on crystal media with remarkable long-range energy migration.

Soft-crystals are molecular solids with highly ordered structures. Here, authors report the soft-crystal copolymerization of green-luminescent Tb(III) and yellow-luminescent Dy(III) complexes, and study the long-range energy transfer from one crystal to the other.

Identification of seven-coordinate LnIII ions in a LnIII[15-MCFe III N(shi)-5](OAc)2Cl species crystallized from methanol and pyridine

The title metallacrown (MC) complexes LnIII[15-MCFeIIIN(shi)-5](OAc)2CI(C5H5N)6 (Ln1), where OAc- is acetate, shi3- is salicylhydroximate, and Ln = Gd and Dy, were synthesized via a self-assembly reaction in methanol and pyridine. Single crystals were grown using slow evaporation and characterized using X-ray diffraction. Seven-coordinate capped octahedron geometries were observed for the lanthanide ion in both complexes, which is uncommon for trivalent lanthanide species. The 15-MC-5 is a ruffled metallacrown archetype similar to previously reported mixed-valent manganese metallacrowns.

Lanthanide-mediated tuning of electronic and magnetic properties in heterotrimetallic cyclooctatetraenyl multidecker self-assemblies

The synthesis of a novel family of homoleptic COT-based heterotrimetallic self-assemblies bearing the formula [LnKCa(COT)3(THF)3] (Ln(iii) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) is reported followed by their X-ray crystallographic and magnetic characterization. All crystals conform to the monoclinic P21/c space group with a slight compression of the unit cell from 3396.4(2) Å3 to 3373.2(4) Å3 along the series. All complexes exhibit a triple-decker structure having the Ln(iii) and K(i) ions sandwiched by three COT2- ligands with an end-bound {Ca2+(THF)3} moiety to form a non-linear (153.5°) arrangement of three different metals. The COT2- ligands act in a η8-mode with respect to all metal centers. A detailed structural comparison of this unique set of heterotrimetallic complexes has revealed consistent trends along the series. From Gd to Yb, the Ln to ring-centroid distance decreases from 1.961(3) Å to 1.827(2) Å. In contrast, the separation of K(i) and Ca(ii) ions from the COT-centroid (2.443(3) and 1.914(3) Å, respectively) is not affected by the change of Ln(iii) ions. The magnetic property investigation of the [LnKCa(COT)3(THF)3] series (Ln(iii) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm) reveals that the Dy, Er, and Tm complexes display slow relaxation of their magnetization, in other words, single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. This behaviour is dominated by thermally activated (Orbach-like) and quantum tunneling processes for [DyKCa(COT)3(THF)3] in contrast to [ErKCa(COT)3(THF)3], in which the thermally activated and Raman processes appear to be relevant. Details of the electronic structures and magnetic properties of these complexes are further clarified with the help of DFT and ab initio theoretical calculations.

New Insights into Optoelectronic Features of Eu(III) Complexes with Heterocyclic Ligand for Advanced Optical Applications

Our present technological society needs the assistance of lanthanide luminescence in almost every field to meet the global energy demands. In present research work we have synthesized five (one binary and four ternary) 5-(4-methylphenyl)-2- furoic acid based Eu(III) complexes with ancillary ligands, namely, aqua (H₂O), neocuproine (neo), 2, 2'-bipyridyl (bipy), bathophenanthroline (batho) and 1, 10-phenanthroline (phen). The spectroscopic analysis and photophysical features are characterized by the use of different investigative techniques. All the findings obtained from EDAX, elemental (CHN) analysis, FT-IR, NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy declared the coordination of ligand binding sites with the europium ion. These Eu(III) complexes possess good thermal stability and excellent optoelectronic features as predicted with the help of TGA and PL analysis. Diffuse reflectance spectral studies confirm their applications in the wide band gap semiconductors. The Judd-Ofelt analysis and monoexponential behavior of lifetime reveals the existence of asymmetric and single local environment around europium ion. All the complexes show sharp red emission validated by CIE color coordinates, color purity, asymmetric ratio and CCT values. SEM analysis tells that the bulk of these complexes comprised of spherical shaped particles with uniform distribution.

Magnetic and Luminescence Properties of 8-Coordinate Holmium(III) Complexes Containing 4,4,4-Trifluoro-1-Phenyl- and 1-(Naphthalen-2-yl)-1,3-Butanedionates

A new series of mononuclear Ho³⁺ complexes derived from the β-diketonate anions: 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedioneate (btfa⁻) and 4,4,4-trifuoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1,3-butanedionate (ntfa⁻) have been synthesized, [Ho(btfa)₃(H₂O)₂] (1a), [Ho(ntfa)₃(MeOH)₂] (1b), (1), [Ho(btfa)₃(phen)] (2), [Ho(btfa)₃(bipy)] (3), [Ho(btfa)₃(di-^tbubipy)] (4), [Ho(ntfa)₃(Me₂bipy)] (5), and [Ho(ntfa)₃(bipy)] (6), where phen is 1,10-phenantroline, bipy is 2,2′-bipyridyl, di-^tbubipy is 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridyl, and Me₂bipy is 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyl. These compounds have been characterized by elemental microanalysis and infrared spectroscopy as well as single-crystal X-ray difraction for 2–6. The central Ho³⁺ ions in these compounds display coordination number 8. The luminescence-emission properties of the pyridyl adducts 2–6 display a strong characteristic band in the visible region at 661 nm and a series of bands in the NIR region (excitation wavelengths (λ_ex) of 367 nm for 2–4 and 380 nm for 5 and 6). The magnetic properties of the complexes revealed magnetically uncoupled Ho³⁺ compounds with no field-induced, single-molecule magnet (SMMs).

Multifunctional DyIII Enantiomeric Pairs Showing Enhanced Photoluminescences and Third-Harmonic Generation Responses through the Coordination Role of Homochiral Tridentate N,N,N-Pincer Ligands

By utilizing Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ to react with enantiomerically pure tridentate N,N,N-pincer ligands, namely (-)/(+)-2,6-bis(4',5'-pinene-2'-pyridyl)pyridine (L_R and L_S), respectively, homochiral Dy^III enantiomeric pairs formulated as Dy(hfac)₃L_R/Dy(hfac)₃L_S (R-1/S-1) (hfac^- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were achieved and structurally characterized. Meanwhile, their magnetic, photoluminescent (PL), and chiroptical properties were probed. The PL test results indicate that the precursor Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ only shows very weak emission, while R-1 exhibits characteristic Dy^III f-f transition emission bands at room temperature. Furthermore, the nonlinear optical responses of Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂, L_R/L_S, and R-1/S-1 were investigated in detail based on crystalline samples. The results reveal that L_R and L_S present the coexistence of second- and third-harmonic generation (SHG and THG) responses with more intense signals for SHG responses; and Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ merely displays weak THG responses, while R-1 and S-1 also only exhibit THG responses. However, the THG intensities of R-1 and S-1 are more than six times larger than that of Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ under the identical measurement conditions. These results demonstrate that introducing homochiral N,N,N-pincer ligands to replace two H₂O molecules of Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ results in significant improvements of both PL performances and THG responses of resultant R-1/S-1 enantiomers. R-1 and S-1 integrate PL, THG, and chiral optical activity in one molecule, suggesting their multifunctional merits. In particular, a convenient method is introduced to simultaneously test THG and SHG responses of molecular materials based on crystalline samples in this work.

The coordination chemistry of benzhydrazide with lanthanide(iii) ions: hydrothermal in situ ligand formation, structures, magnetic and photoluminescence sensing properties

The influence of synthetic conditions on the solid-state structural formation of lanthanide(iii) complexes based on a hydrazide ligand have been investigated and reported. Depending on the solvents and reaction temperatures, the reactions of hydrated Ln(NO3)3 with a benzohydrazide (bzz) ligand afforded three classes of lanthanide(iii) coordination complexes viz. [Ln(bzz)(NO3)](NO3)2 (1Ln; Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5)), [Ln(bzz)(ben)3(H2O)]·H2O (2Ln; Ln = Pr (6), Nd (7), Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Er (13)), and [Ln3(ben)3] (3Ln; Ln = Eu (14), Gd (15), Tb (16), Dy (17), Er (18), Tm (19), Yb (20), Lu (21)). Complexes 1-5 in series 1Ln were isolated by slow evaporation of their isopropanol solutions at ambient temperature, and the complexes display similar discrete structures bearing distinct intermolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds to generate a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture. Complexes 6-13 in series 2Ln were obtained under hydrothermal conditions at 110 °C where the in situ generated benzoate (ben) ligands participated in the formation of one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) with the bzz ligands. At a temperature of 145 °C the hydrothermal conditions result in the formation of the thermodynamically more stable products of 14-21 in series 3Ln, in which the bzz ligand underwent complete in situ hydrolysis to create the ben ligand. These coordination assemblies feature 1D zigzag chains that are formed by unusual low coordination numbers of the six- and seven-fold coordinated Ln3+ centers bridged by the ben ligands in μ 2- and μ 3-coordination modes. Notably, the chain structures of 2Ln can be transformed into the zigzag tape-like structures of 3Ln upon heating the crystalline samples to 400 °C in air. In the solid state at room temperature, the Eu- (2, 9, 14) and Tb- (4, 11, 16) containing complexes emit red and green light, respectively. The luminescence investigations show that the Eu- (9, 14) and Tb-(11, 16) based CPs could be used as fluorescent probes for acetone and Co2+ ions via an energy competition mechanism. Meanwhile, the Gd- (10, 15) and Dy- (12, 17) based CPs show typical antiferromagnetic interactions.

Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII enantiomeric pairs showing circularly polarized luminescence, photoluminescence and triboluminescence

Two homochiral EuIII and SmIII tris(β-diketonate) enantiomeric pairs, based on fluorinated β-diketone (Hbtfa) and enantiopure asymmetric N,N'-donor ligands (LR and LS), Λ-Eu(btfa)3LR (R-1-Eu)/Δ-Eu(btfa)3LS (S-1-Eu) and Λ-Sm(btfa)3LR (R-2-Sm)/Δ-Sm(btfa)3LS (S-2-Sm) (btfa- = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedionate and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pineno-2,2'-bipyridine) were synthesized. The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra confirmed their enantiomeric nature. R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm exhibit intense characteristic emissions of EuIII (red) and SmIII (orange-red) ions both in the solid state and in DCM with long lifetimes and high luminescence quantum yields. For example, the overall quantum yields reach up to 61% and 53% along with very high sensitization efficiency values of 82 and 79 for R-1-Eu in the solid state and in DCM, respectively. Notably, the corresponding values are determined to be 6.5% (solid state) and 3.1% (DCM) for R-2-Sm, which are among the highest quantum yields for rare SmIII tris(β-diketonate) luminescent complexes reported to date. Furthermore, R-1-Eu and R-2-Sm show a strong triboluminescence (TL) phenomenon visible with the naked eye in daylight. Moreover, R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu and R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. Particularly, the luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) for R-2-Sm/S-2-Sm are larger than those for R-1-Eu/S-1-Eu despite the fact that SmIII complexes usually show poorer emission than EuIII homologues, which is very rare in the reported EuIII and SmIII CPL-active complexes.

Seven-Coordinate Tb3+ Complexes with 90% Quantum Yields: High-Performance Examples of Combined Singlet- and Triplet-to-Tb3+ Energy-Transfer Pathways

Seven-coordinate, pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) complexes [Ln(bbpen)Cl] and [Ln(bbppn)Cl], in which Ln = Tb³⁺ (products I and II), Eu³⁺ (III and IV), and Gd³⁺ (V and VI), with bbpen^2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine and bbppn^2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,2-propanediamine, were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements, and photoluminescence (steady-state and time-resolved) spectroscopy. Under a static magnetic field of 0.1 T, the Tb³⁺ complexes I and II revealed single-ion-magnet behavior. Also, upon excitation at 320 nm at 300 K, I and II presented very high absolute emission quantum yields (0.90 ± 0.09 and 0.92 ± 0.09, respectively), while the corresponding Eu³⁺ complexes III and IV showed no photoluminescence. Detailed theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy-transfer rates for the Tb³⁺ products indicated that both singlet and triplet ligand excited states contribute efficiently to the overall emission performance. The expressive quantum yields, Q_Ln^L, measured for I and II in the solid state and a dichloromethane solution depend on the excitation wavelength, being higher at 320 nm. Such a dependence was rationalized by computing the intersystem crossing rates (W_ISC) and singlet fluorescence lifetimes (τ_S) related to the population dynamics of the S₁ and T₁ levels. Thin films of product II showed high air stability and photostability upon continuous UV illumination, which allowed their use as downshifting layers in a green light-emitting device (LED). The prototypes presented a luminous efficacy comparable with those found in commercial LED coatings, without requiring encapsulation or dispersion of II in host matrixes. The results indicate that the PBP environment determined by the ethylenediamine (en)-based ligands investigated in this work favors the outstanding optical properties in Tb³⁺ complexes. This work presents a comprehensive structural, chemical, and spectroscopic characterization of two Tb³⁺ complexes of mixed-donor, en-based ligands, focusing on their outstanding optical properties. They constitute good molecular examples in which both triplet and singlet excited states provide energy to the Tb³⁺ ion and lead to high values of Q_Ln^L.

Short Radiative Lifetime and Non-Triplet Sensitization in Near-Infrared-Luminescent Yb(III) Complex with Tripodal Schiff Base

We prepared Ln(III) (Ln=Eu, Gd, and Yb) complexes with a tripodal Schiff base, tris[2-(5-methylsalicylideneimino)ethyl]amine (H3 L) and studied their photophysical properties. Upon ligand excitation, YbL showed Yb(III)-centered luminescence in the near-infrared region. While the overall quantum yield (0.60(1)%) of YbL in acetonitrile was moderate among the reported values for Yb(III) complexes, its radiative lifetime (0.33(2) ms) was significantly shorter than those reported previously. We propose that the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) state mediated the sensitization in YbL. The emission and excitation spectra of EuL indicated the participation of the LMCT state in the sensitization. The radiative lifetime (0.84(7) ms) for EuL in the solid state was rather short compared to those of reported Eu(III) complexes. Our results show that the Yb(III) complex with the Schiff base ligand has two features: the short radiative lifetime and the non-triplet sensitization path.

Red-Emitting Hybrid Based on Eu3+-dbm Complex Anchored on Silica Nanoparticles Surface by Carboxylic Acid for Biomarker Application

Luminescent organic-inorganic hybrids containing lanthanides (Ln³⁺) have been prominent for applications such as luminescent bio-probes in biological assays. In this sense, a luminescent hybrid based on dense silica (SiO₂) nanospheres decorated with Eu³⁺ β-diketonate complexes using dibenzoylmethane (Hdbm) as a luminescent antenna was developed by using a hierarchical organization in four steps: (i) anchoring of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) organosilane on the SiO₂ surface, (ii) formation of a carboxylic acid ligand, (iii) coordination of Eu³⁺ to the carboxylate groups and (iv) coordination of dbm^- to Eu³⁺. The hybrid structure was elucidated through the correlation of thermogravimetry, silicon nuclear magnetic resonance and photoluminescence. Results indicate that the carboxylic acid-Eu³⁺-dbm hybrid was formed on the surface of the particles with no detectable changes on their size or shape after all the four steps (average size of 32 ± 7 nm). A surface charge of -27.8 mV was achieved for the hybrid, assuring a stable suspension in aqueous media. The Eu³⁺ complex provides intense red luminescence, characteristic of Eu³⁺⁵D₀→⁷F_J electronic transitions, with an intrinsic emission quantum yield of 38%, even in an aqueous suspension. Therefore, the correlation of luminescence, structure, particle morphology and fluorescence microscopy images make the hybrid promising for application in bioimaging.

Stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels: Design and applications

Luminescent hydrogels are emerging soft materials with applications in photoelectric, biomedicine, sensors and actuators, which are fabricated via covalently conjugation of luminophors to hydrogelators or physical loading of luminescent organic/inorganic materials into hydrogel matrices. Due to the intrinsic stimulus-responsiveness for hydrogels such as thermo-, pH, ionic strength, light and redox, luminescent hydrogels could respond to external physical or chemical stimuli through varying the luminescent properties such as colors, fluorescent intensity and so on, affording diverse application potential in addition to the pristine individual hydrogels or luminescent materials. Based on the rapid development of such area, here we systematically summarize and discuss the design protocols, properties as well as the applications of stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogels. Because of the stimuli-responsiveness, biocompatibility, injectable and controllability of luminescent hydrogels, they are widely used as functional smart materials. We illustrate the applications of luminescent hydrogels. The future developments about luminescent hydrogels are also presented.

Mixed-ligand lanthanide complexes supported by ditopic bis(imino-methyl)-phenol/calix[4]arene macrocycles: synthesis, structures, and luminescence properties of [Ln2(L2)(MeOH)2] (Ln = La, Eu, Tb, Yb)

The lanthanide binding ability of a macrocyclic ligand H₆L² comprising two bis(iminomethyl)phenol and two calix[4]arene units has been studied. H₆L² is a ditopic ligand which provides dinuclear neutral complexes of composition [Ln₂(L²)(MeOH)₂] (Ln = La (1), Eu (2), Tb (3), and Yb (4)) in very good yield. X-ray crystal structure analyses for 2 and 3 show that (L²)^6- accommodates two seven coordinated lanthanide ions in a distorted monocapped trigonal prismatic/octahedral coordination environment. UV-vis spectroscopic titrations performed with La³⁺, Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺ and Yb³⁺ ions in mixed MeOH/CH₂Cl₂ solution (I = 0.01 M NBu₄PF₆) reveal that a 2 : 1 (metal : ligand) stoichiometry is present in solution, with log K₁₁ and K₂₁ values ranging from 5.25 to 6.64. The ratio α = K₁₁/K₂₁ of the stepwise formation constants for the mononuclear (L² + M = ML², log K₁₁) and the dinuclear complexes (ML² + M = M₂L², log K₂₁) was found to be invariably smaller than unity indicating that the binding of the first Ln³⁺ ion augments the binding of the second Ln³⁺ ion. The present complexes are less luminescent than other seven-coordinated Eu and Tb complexes, which can be traced to vibrational relaxation of excited Eu^III and Tb^III states by the coligated MeOH and H₂O molecules and/or low-lying ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) states.

An Approach to Nonsymmetric Bis(tertiary phosphine oxides) Comprising Heterocyclic Fragments via the Pd-Catalyzed Phosphorylation

Nonsymmetric tertiary phosphine oxides with different five- and six-membered heterocyclic fragments such as pyridine, 2,2′-bipyridine, 1,10-phenantroline, quinoline, imidazole, and thiazole were synthesized in good yields via the successive introduction of phosphine oxide groups into the initial dihalogenated heterocycles by means of Pd-catalyzed phosphorylation reaction. The synthesis of pyridine-type compounds is hindered by competing double coupling, while for five-membered heterocycles the principal difficulty is the dehalogenation. Both side processes were successfully suppressed by the use of an excess of a dihalide (which can be easily recovered during the product purification step), proper phosphine ligand for palladium, and nonpolar solvent such as toluene.

Recent Advances in Luminescence Imaging of Biological Systems Using Lanthanide(III) Luminescent Complexes

The use of luminescence in biological systems allows one to diagnose diseases and understand cellular processes. Molecular systems, particularly lanthanide(III) complexes, have emerged as an attractive system for application in cellular luminescence imaging due to their long emission lifetimes, high brightness, possibility of controlling the spectroscopic properties at the molecular level, and tailoring of the ligand structure that adds sensing and therapeutic capabilities. This review aims to provide a background in luminescence imaging and lanthanide spectroscopy and discuss selected examples from the recent literature on lanthanide(III) luminescent complexes in cellular luminescence imaging, published in the period 2016-2020. Finally, the challenges and future directions that are pointing for the development of compounds that are capable of executing multiple functions and the use of light in regions where tissues and cells have low absorption will be discussed.

Preorganized helical chirality controlled homochiral self-assembly and circularly polarized luminescence of a quadruple-stranded Eu2L4 helicate

β-Diketones are one of the most widely used ligands for sensitizing the luminescence of lanthanide complexes due to their excellent sensitization abilities. However, the difficulties in introducing chiral groups to take part in the electronic transitions of conjugated systems limit their application in lanthanide circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. In view of the inherent chirality of the helical structure, herein, a pair of homochiral quadruple-stranded helicates, Eu2L4, is assembled based on chiral bis-β-diketonate ligands, wherein the two point chirality centers in the spacer preorganize the helical conformation of the ligand (3S,4S)/(3R,4R)-3,4-bis(4,4'-bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)phenoxyl)-1-benzylpyrrolidine, LSS/LRR. X-ray crystallographic analyses reveal that the R,R configurations of the chiral carbons in the spacer induce the M helical sense of the ligand, while the S,S configurations induce the P helical sense. Through the comprehensive spectral characterization in combination with semiempirical geometry optimization using the Sparkle/RM1 model, it is confirmed that the preorganized ligands successfully control the homochirality of the helicates. Moreover, the mirror-image CD and CPL spectra and NMR measurements confirm the formation of enantiomeric pairs and their diastereopurities in solution. Detailed photophysical and chiroptical characterization studies reveal that the helicates not only exhibit intense circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with |glum| values reaching 0.10, but also show a high luminescence quantum yield of 34%. This study effectively combines the helical chirality of the helicates with the excellent sensitization ability of the β-diketones, providing an effective strategy for the syntheses of chiral lanthanide CPL materials.
