Application of catalytic technology based on the piezoelectric effect in wastewater purification

The demands of human life and industrial activities result in a significant influx of toxic contaminants into aquatic ecosystems. In particular, organic pollutants such as antibiotics and dye molecules, bacteria, and heavy metal ions are represented, posing a severe risk to the health and continued existence of living organisms. The method of removing pollutants from water bodies by utilizing the principle of the piezoelectric effect in combination with chemical catalytic processes is superior to other wastewater purification technologies because it can collect water energy, mechanical energy, etc. to achieve cleanliness and high removal efficiency. Herein, we briefly introduced the piezoelectric mechanisms and then reviewed the latest advances in the design and synthesis of piezoelectric materials, followed by a summary of applications based on the principle of piezoelectric effect to degrade pollutants in water for wastewater purification. Moreover, water purification technologies incorporating the piezoelectric effect, including piezoelectric effect-assisted membrane filtration, activation of persulfate, and battery electrocatalysis are elaborated. Finally, future challenges and research directions for the piezoelectric effect are proposed.

Elimination of Trace Tetracycline with Alkyl Modified MIL-101 in Water

The overuse of antibiotics poses a serious threat to human health and ecosystems. Therefore, the development of high-performance antibiotic removal materials has attracted increasing attention. However, the adsorption and removal of trace amounts of antibiotics in aqueous systems still face significant challenges. Taking tetracycline (TC) as a representative antibiotic and based on its structural characteristics, a series of TC adsorbents are prepared by grafting alkyl groups to the framework of MIL-101(Cr). The adsorptive capacity of the modified materials for tetracycline markedly surpasses that of MIL-101(Cr), with MIL-101-dod achieving the best adsorption performance. MIL-101-dod demonstrated an outstanding ability to adsorb tetracycline at low concentrations, where a 5.0 mg sample of MIL-101-dod can reduce the concentration of a 90 mL 5 ppm tetracycline solution to below 1 ppb, significantly superior to other sorbents. XPS and IR tests indicate that MIL-101-dod has multiple weak interactions with tetracycline molecules, including C─H…O and C─H…π. This work provides theoretical and experimental support for the development of adsorbents for low-concentration antibiotics.

Room-temperature synthesis of a Zr-UiO-66 metal-organic framework via mechanochemical pretreatment for the rapid removal of EDTA-chelated copper from water

Treatment of heavy metal pollution in complexed states within water bodies presents significant challenges in the current water treatment field. Adsorption as a means for the removal of heavy metals is characterized by its simplicity of operation, stable effluent, and minimal equipment requirements. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents hold significant interest for applications in water treatment. In this study, we investigated a green synthesis approach for the ball-milling pretreated synthesis of UiO-66(Zr) at room temperature, abbreviated as UiO-66(Zr)-rm. Besides having the same thermal stability and crystal structure as the product from microwave-assisted synthesis (UiO-66(Zr)-mw), the resulting UiO-66(Zr)-rm features smaller particle size and superior mesoporous structure. The adsorption efficiency and mechanism for removing EDTA-chelated copper (EDTA-CuII), a complexed heavy metal in water, were extensively analyzed. UiO-66(Zr)-rm presented a maximum adsorption capacity over EDTA-CuII of 43 mg g-1 and a much higher adsorption rate (0.16 g (mg h)-1) than UiO-66(Zr)-mw (0.06 g (mg h)-1). Hierarchically mesostructured defects allow the sorbate to have more effective diffusion in a shorter time to achieve faster adsorption kinetics. Benefiting from the mild synthesis conditions and nontoxic solvents, UiO-66(Zr) has the potential to be produced at a scaled-up level, thereby exhibiting excellent adsorption performance for the removal of complexed heavy metals in the future.

Research progress of industrial wastewater treatment technology based on solar interfacial adsorption coupled evaporation process

Solar interface evaporation is an effective method for the treatment of water that has low energy consumption. Adsorption is recognized to be one of the most stable wastewater treatment methods and is widely used. Combining solar interface evaporation with adsorption provides a novel and low-cost approach for the efficient removal of heavy metals and organic pollutants from industrial wastewater. This paper reviews the characteristics and application of some common wastewater treatment methods. The photothermal conversion and the conceptual design of interface evaporation combined with adsorption are introduced and the photo-thermal conversion and adsorption methods are discussed. The study provides a summary of recent studies and advancements in interfacial evaporation-coupled adsorption materials, which include hydrogels, aerogels, and biomass materials for adsorption, and carbon materials for photothermal conversion. Finally, the current challenges encountered in industrial wastewater treatment are outlined and its prospects are discussed. The aim of this review is to explore a wide range of possibilities with the interfacial evaporation-coupled adsorption method and propose a new low-cost and high-efficiency method for industrial wastewater treatment.

Cysteamine-Anchored MOF through Post-Synthetic Modification Strategy for the Effective Removal of Mercury from Water

The introduction of cysteamine functionality, referred to as Q-ZIF-67-SH, was successfully achieved through postsynthetic modification while maintaining the structural and thermal stability of the quasi metal-organic framework Q-ZIF-67. By subjecting ZIF-67 to controlled partial deligandation at 310 °C under an air atmosphere, a substantial number of unsaturated cobalt sites were generated within the quasi ZIF-67 (Q-ZIF-67) structure. These unsaturated cobalt sites facilitated effective coordination with cysteamine, resulting in the development of the thiol-functionalized framework Q-ZIF-67-SH. The potential of these metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorptive removal of hazardous Hg(II) was investigated. Various factors, such as the type of sorbent, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of Hg(II), and presence of coexisting ions, were thoroughly examined and comprehensively explained. Thiol-anchored MOF significantly enhanced the efficiency of Hg(II) removal, achieving an impressive removal rate of up to 99.2%. Furthermore, it demonstrated a maximum adsorption capacity of 994 mg g-1 and a distribution coefficient of 2.5 × 106 mL g-1. A good correspondence with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model was observed through the fitting of adsorption kinetics and the isotherm model. The thermodynamic data strongly indicate that the adsorptive removal of Hg(II) is characterized by endothermicity and spontaneity. This signifies that the process is energetically favorable and has potential for efficient Hg(II) removal. Therefore, the Q-ZIF-67-SH sorbent emerges as a promising and advantageous option for the removal of Hg(II) from water.

A review of passive acid mine drainage treatment by PRB and LPB: From design, testing, to construction

An extensive volume of acid mine drainage (AMD) generated throughout the mining process has been widely regarded as one of the most catastrophic environmental problems. Surface water and groundwater impacted by pollution exhibit extreme low pH values and elevated sulfate and metal/metalloid concentrations, posing a serious threat to the production efficiency of enterprises, domestic water safety, and the ecological health of the basin. Over the recent years, a plethora of techniques has been developed to address the issue of AMD, encompassing nanofiltration membranes, lime neutralization, and carrier-microencapsulation. Nonetheless, these approaches often come with substantial financial implications and exhibit restricted long-term sustainability. Among the array of choices, the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system emerges as a noteworthy passive remediation method for AMD. Distinguished by its modest construction expenses and enduring stability, this approach proves particularly well-suited for addressing the environmental challenges posed by abandoned mines. This study undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the PRB systems utilized in the remediation of AMD. Furthermore, it introduced the concept of low permeability barrier, derived from the realm of site-contaminated groundwater management. The strategies pertaining to the selection of materials, the physicochemical aspects influencing long-term efficacy, the intricacies of design and construction, as well as the challenges and prospects inherent in barrier technology, are elaborated upon in this discourse.

Machine learning-based prediction and experimental validation of heavy metal adsorption capacity of bentonite

As a natural adsorbent material, bentonite is widely used in the field of heavy metal adsorption. The heavy metal adsorption capacity of bentonite varies significantly in studies due to the differences in the properties of bentonite, solution, and heavy metal. To achieve accurate predictions of bentonite's heavy metal adsorption capacity, this study employed six machine learning (ML) regression algorithms to investigate the adsorption characteristics of bentonite. Finally, an eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression (XGB) model with outstanding predictive performance was constructed. Explanation analysis of the XGB model further reveal the importance and influence manner of each input feature in predicting the heavy metal adsorption capacity of bentonite. The feature categories influencing heavy metal adsorption capacity were ranked in order of importance as adsorption conditions > bentonite properties > heavy metal properties. Furthermore, a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) software was developed, facilitating researchers and engineers to conveniently use the XGB model for predicting the heavy metal adsorption capacity of bentonite. This study provides new insights into the adsorption behaviors of bentonite for heavy metals, offering guidance and support for enhancing its application efficiency and addressing heavy metal pollution remediation.

Integration of metal organic framework nanoparticles into sodium alginate biopolymer-based three-dimensional membrane capsules for the efficient removal of toxic metal cations from water and real sewage

Sodium alginate (SA) biopolymer has been recognized as an efficient adsorbent material owing to their unique characteristics, including biodegradability, non-toxic nature, and presence of abundant hydrophilic functional groups. Accordingly, in the current research work, UiO-66-OH and UiO-66-(OH)2 metal organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) have been integrated into SA biopolymer-based three-dimensional (3-D) membrane capsules (MCs) via a simple and facile approach to remove toxic metal cations (Cu2+ and Cd2+) from water and real sewage. The newly configured capsules were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDX and XPS analyses techniques. Exceptional sorption properties of the as-developed capsules were ensured by evaluation of the pertinent operational parameters, i.e., contents of MOF-NPs (1-100 wt%), adsorbent dosage (0.001-0.05 g), content time (0-360 h), pH (1-8), initial concentration of metal cations (5-1000 mg/L) and reaction temperature (298.15-333.15 K) on the eradication of Cu2+ and Cd2+ metal cations. It was found that hydrophilic functional groups (-OH and -COOH) have performed an imperative role in the smooth loading of MOF-NPs into 3-D membrane capsules via intra/inter-molecular hydrogen bonding and van der waals potencies. The maximum monolayer uptake capacities (as calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model) of Cd2+ and Cu2+ by 3-D SGMMCs-OH were 940 and 1150 mg/g, respectively, and by 3-D SGMMCs-(OH)2 were 1375 and 1575 mg/g, respectively, under optimum conditions. The as-developed capsules have demonstrated superior selectivity against targeted metal cations under designated pH and maintained >80 % removal efficiency up to six consecutive treatment cycles. Removal mechanisms of metal cations by the 3-D SGMMCs-OH/(OH)2 was proposed, and electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange, inner-sphere coordination bonds/interactions, and aromatic ligands exchange were observed to be the key removal mechanisms. Notably, FTIR and XPS analysis indicated that hydroxyl groups of Zr-OH and BDC-OH/(OH)2 aromatic linkers played vital roles in Cu2+ and Cd2+ adsorption by participating in inner-sphere coordination interactions and aromatic ligands exchange mechanisms. The as-prepared capsules indicated >70 % removal efficiency of Cu2+ from real electroplating wastewater in the manifestation of other competitive metal ions and pollutants under selected experimental conditions. Thus, it was observed that newly configured 3-D SGMMCs-OH/(OH)2 have offered a valuable discernment into the development of MOFs-based water decontamination 3-D capsules for industrial applications.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction Structure Solution of a Novel Cu-Based Protocatechuate Metal-Organic Framework

Mechanochemical synthesis is a powerful approach to obtain new materials, limiting costs, and times. However, defected and submicrometrical-sized crystal products make critical their characterization through classical single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A valid alternative is represented by three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction, in which a transmission electron microscope is used, like a diffractometer. This work matches a green water-based mechanochemical synthesis and 3D electron diffraction to obtain and characterize a Cu-based protocatechuate metal-organic framework (PC-MOF). Its structure has been fully refined through dynamical diffraction theory, and free water molecules could be detected in the channels of the framework. Thermal characterization, focused on the dehydration profile determination, leads to the formation of a novel high-temperature 2D coordination polymer, fully solved with 3D electron diffraction data. At last, the strong activity of the PC-MOF against cationic dyes like methylene blue has been reported.

Na/N Co-doped Seaweed Biochar Composite for Efficient Removal of Aqueous Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Pollution from harmful heavy metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cu(II) is causing serious environmental and health problems. In this study, Sodium and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon material (Na/NABc) was successfully prepared from seaweed, sodium hydroxide, and dicyandiamide. The experimental results showed that Na/NABc is an excellent adsorbent for the effective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) from water bodies. Specifically, 99.8% of Pb(II) and 64.6% Cu(II) (100 mg/L) were removed within 12 h using 10 mg Na/NABc(10%) at 25 °C. The adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) in aqueous solution by Na/NABc(10%) was efficient and rapid in the first stage. The theoretical maximum removal capacities of Na/NABc for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were 959.6 and 299.1 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions were adsorbed quickly in the first 60 min, and the kinetics data were generally consistent with a pseudo-second-order model. Na/NABc(10%) had a large distribution coefficient for Pb(II) (8.38 L/mg) and Cu(II) (1.17 L/mg). The possible mechanisms were precipitation, Ion exchange, and surface complexation. The removal rate can reach about 70% after five cycles, and the release of sodium meets the standard. The results of this study demonstrate the potential applicability of Na/NABc(10%) for adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution.

Selective removal of Cr2O72- in aqueous solution by nonporous pure crystals of cucurbit[6]uril

Cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) could serve as a selective absorbent for the toxic anion Cr2O72-, which was demonstrated by the results of UV-vis, ICP, XPS, SEM, and EDS experiments. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that capture capacity could be attributed to the outer-surface interactions of cucurbit[n]uril between Cr2O72- and the outer surface of Q[6].

Macro-manufacturing robust and stable metal-organic framework beads for antibiotics removal from wastewater

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great prospects in wastewater remediation. However, the easy aggregation, difficult separation and inferior reusability greatly limit their large-scale application. Herein, we proposed a facile, green and low-cost strategy to construct robust and stable MOF-based hydrogel beads (Fe-BTC-HBs) in a gram scale, and employed them to remove antibiotics from wastewater. As a result, the Fe-BTC-HBs demonstrated outstanding adsorption capacity for both ofloxacin (OFL) and tetracycline (TC) (281.17 mg/g for OFL and 223.60 mg/g for TC) under a near-neutral environment. The main adsorption mechanisms of OFL and TC were hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interaction. Owing to its macroscopic granule and stable structure, Fe-BTC-HBs can be separated rapidly from wastewater after capturing antibiotics, and more than 85% adsorption capacity still remained after six cycles, while the powdered Fe-BTC only showed less than 6% recovery efficiency with massive weight loss (around 92%). In real industrial effluent, the adsorption performance of Fe-BTC-HBs toward two antibiotics exhibited negligible decreases (2.9% for OFL and 2.2% for TC) compared with that in corresponding solutions. Furthermore, Fe-BTC-HBs also had appealing economic and environmental benefit. Overall, the macro-manufactured MOF beads have the promising potential for the large-scale wastewater treatment.

Dinuclear Copper Sulfate-Based Square Lattice Topology Network with High Alkyne Selectivity

Porous coordination networks (PCNs) sustained by inorganic anions that serve as linker ligands can offer high selectivity toward specific gases or vapors in gas mixtures. Such inorganic anions are best exemplified by electron-rich fluorinated anions, e.g., SiF62-, TiF62-, and NbOF52-, although sulfate anions have recently been highlighted as inexpensive and earth-friendly alternatives. Herein, we report the use of a rare copper sulfate dimer molecular building block to generate two square lattice, sql, coordination networks which can be prepared via solvent layering or slurrying, CuSO4(1,4-bib)1.5, 1, (1,4-bib = 1,4-bisimidazole benzene) and CuSO4(1,4-bin)1.5, 2, (1,4-bin = 1,4-bisimidazole naphthalene). Variable-temperature SCXRD and PXRD experiments revealed that both sql networks underwent reversible structural transformations due to linker rotations or internetwork displacements. Gas sorption studies conducted upon the narrow-pore phase of CuSO4(1,4-bin)1.5, 2np, found a high calculated 1:99 selectivity for C2H2 over C2H4 (33.01) and CO2 (15.18), as well as strong breakthrough performance. Across-the-board, C3H4 selectivity vs C3H6, CO2, and C3H8 was also observed. Sulfate-based PCNs, although still understudied, appear increasingly likely to offer utility in gas and vapor separations.

UV-light-responsive Ag/TiO2/PVA nanocomposite for photocatalytic degradation of Cr, Ni, Zn, and Cu heavy metal ions

The rapid growth of industrialization has led to the uncontrolled pollution of the environment, and rapid action is needed. This study synthesized Ag/TiO2/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nano photocatalyst for promising light-derived photocatalytic removal of heavy metal ions. The design of experiment (DOE) was used to study the effect of important factors (pH, reaction time, and photocatalyst dosage) to maximize the final performance of the photocatalyst. In the optimized condition, the Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst removed more than 94% of Cr6+ in 180 min, and the efficiency was more than 70% for Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ metal ions. The adsorption of the heavy metal ions on the photocatalyst was described well with the Langmuir isotherm, while the pseudo-second-order linear kinetic model fitted with the experimental data. The nano-photocatalyst's stability was confirmed after maintaining its performance for five successive runs. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for the heavy metal ions removal can be attributed to the presence of metallic silver nanoparticles (electron transfer and plasmonic fields mechanisms) and PVA, which delayed the recombination of electron-hole. The synthesized ternary Ag/TiO2/PVA nano-photocatalyst showed promising performance for the elimination of heavy metal ions and can be used for environmental remediation purposes.

Cotinuous precision separation of gold using a metal-organic framework/polymer composite

Critical metals of environmental and economic relevance can be found within complex mixtures, such as mine tailings, electronic waste and wastewater, at trace amounts. Specifically, gold is a critical metal that carries desired redox active properties in various applications, including modern electronics, medicine and chemical catalysis. Here we report the structuring of sub-micron Fe-BTC/PpPDA crystallites into larger 250μm or 500μm granules for continuous packed bed experiments for the precision separation of gold. The Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA is highly crystalline and porous with a BET surface area of 750 m2g-1. Further, the hybrid nanocomposite material maintains its selectivity for gold ions over common inorganic interferents. The structuring approach reported prevents excessive pressure drop and ensures stability over time and operation in a packed bed column. Further, we demonstrate that the Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA can concentrate at least 42 wt% of gold under a dynamic continuous flow operation. These findings highlight the potential of Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA for practical applications in industry, particularly in the selective capture of gold from complex mixtures.

Nanoarchitectonics Design Strategy of Metal-Organic Framework and Bio-Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Advanced Wastewater Treatment through Adsorption

Freshwater depletion is an alarm for finding an eco-friendly solution to treat wastewater for drinking and domestic applications. Though several methods like chlorination, filtration, and coagulation-sedimentation are conventionally employed for water treatment, these methods need to be improved as they are not environmentally friendly, rely on chemicals, and are ineffective for all kinds of pollutants. These problems can be addressed by employing an alternative solution that is effective for efficient water treatment and favors commercial aspects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging porous material, possess high stability, pore size tunability, greater surface area, and active sites. These MOFs can be tailored; thus, they can be customized according to the target pollutant. Hence, MOFs can be employed as adsorbents that effectively target different pollutants. Bio-MOFs are a kind of MOFs that are incorporated with biomolecules, which also possess properties of MOFs and are used as a nontoxic adsorbent. In this review, we elaborate on the interaction between MOFs and target pollutants, the role of linkers in the adsorption of contaminants, tailoring strategy that can be employed on MOFs and Bio-MOFs to target specific pollutants, and we also highlight the effect of environmental matrices on adsorption of pollutants by MOFs.

Amine-Based MOF for Precious Metal Remediation

Due to the continuous growth rate of the electronic industry, hi-tech companies depend on mining and extracting precious metals to meet the public demand. The high turnover of modern devices generates an alarming amount of electronic waste (e-waste), which contains more precious metals than mined ores and therefore needs efficient recovery procedures. A highly stable homopiperazine-derived Cd-MOF, poly-[Cd(H2L)]·9H2O, with a protonated amine ligand core, exists as a twofold interpenetrated 3D framework with 1D channels into which the N+-H bond is directed. The geometry of these channels appears to be suitable to host square planar metalate complexes. Under acidic conditions, [MCl4]x- anions containing Au, Cu, Ni, and Pt, representing common components of e-waste under extraction conditions, were tested for capture and recovery. Cd-MOF exhibits remarkable selectivity and uptake performance toward Au with an adsorbent capacity of 25 mg g-1ads and shows a marked selectivity for Au over Cu in competitive experiments. The adsorption mechanism of Au appears to be predominantly physical adsorption at the surface of the material.

Fluorescence sensing and device fabrication with luminescent metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of hybrid porous multi-functional materials consisting of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands. MOFs have exclusive benefits due to their tunable structure and diverse properties. Luminescent MOFs (LMOFs) exhibit both porosity and light emission. They display abundant host and guest responses, making them conducive to sensing. Currently, LMOF sensing research is gaining more depth, with attention given to their device and practical applications. This work reviews recent advancements and device applications of LMOFs as chemical sensors toward ions, volatile organic compounds, biomolecules, and environmental toxins. Furthermore, the detection mechanism and the correlation between material properties and structure are elaborated. This analysis serves as a valuable reference for the preparation and efficient application of targeted LMOFs.

MOF-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Water Purification: A Review

Photocatalytic membranes can effectively integrate membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes to provide an eco-friendly solution for efficient water purification. It is of great significance to develop highly efficient photocatalytic membranes driven by visible light to ensure the long-term stability of membrane separation systems and the maximum utilization of solar energy. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is an emerging photocatalyst with a well-defined structure and tunable chemical properties, showing a broad application prospect in the construction of high-performance photocatalytic membranes. Herein, this work provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Initially, this work outlines the main tailoring strategies that facilitate the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of MOF-based photocatalysts. Next, this work introduces commonly used methods for fabricating MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Subsequently, this work discusses the application and mechanisms of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes toward organic pollutant degradation, metal ion removal, and membrane fouling mitigation. Finally, challenges in developing MOF-based photocatalytic membranes and their practical applications are presented, while also pointing out future research directions toward overcoming these existing limitations.

Thiol-Functionalized MIL-100(Fe)/Device for the Removal of Heavy Metals in Water

The preparation of a functional device based on a functionalized MIL-100(Fe) metal-organic framework for the solid-phase extraction of heavy metals is reported. By a simple and easy straightforward grafting procedure, a thiol-functionalized MIL-100(Fe) material (MIL-100(Fe)-SH) with a S/Fe ratio of 0.80 and a surface area of 840 m2 g-1 was obtained. MIL-100(Fe)-SH exhibited a higher Hg(II) extraction (96 ± 5%) than that of MIL-100(Fe) (78 ± 4%) due to the interaction between thiol groups and Hg(II) ions. For practical applications, the obtained MIL-100(Fe)-SH was integrated by a simple method to a 3D printed support based on a matrix of interconnected cubes using poly(vinylidene fluoride) as binder, obtaining a functional device that simultaneously acts as stirrer and sorbent. The developed device showed high efficiency for the removal of Hg(II), good reusability, and excellent performance for the simultaneous preconcentration and further detection and quantification of Hg(II), Pb(II), and As(V) in tap, well, and lake water samples.

Zinc(II)-Based Ring-and-Rod Coordination Layer as an Excitation-Wavelength-dependent Dual-Emissive Chemosensor for Discriminating Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ in Water

The reactions of Zn(NO3)2, 3,6-bis(pyridin-3-yl)-9H-carbazole (bpycz), and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4dhbdc) or 2-bromoterephthalic acid (Br-1,4-H2bdc) under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions yielded corresponding coordination polymers (CPs) {[Zn(H2dhbdc)(bpycz)]•0.5H2O}n (1) and [Zn(Br-1,4-bdc)(bpycz)]•2DMAc•H2O (2), respectively, with high thermal stability approaching 350 °C. CP 1 adopts a ring-and-rod layer structure, which is topologically described as a 4-connected net with the point symbol of 2•65. Two layers are interpenetrated in parallel interlocking mode to form a double 2D → 2D polyrotaxane entanglement with extra-framework void space of 19.6%. CP 2 has a non-interpenetrating ring-and-rod layer structure of 4-connected 2•65 net topology, with extra-framework void space of 16.6%. Thermally activated 1 and 2 revealed CO2 uptakes of 101.1 and 98.6 cm3 g-1, respectively, at P/P0 = 1 and 195 K. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) patterns confirmed that 1 and 2 both possessed high chemical stability in H2O, CH3OH, acetone, and DMF, and framework stability during gas adsorption-desorption. The H2O suspension of 1 displayed excitation-dependent dual-emissive properties, appearing at 432 nm upon excitation at 300 nm and at 528 nm upon excitation at 365 nm. Of note, 1 was capable of detection of Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ ions in H2O, showing good anti-interference ability, excellent selectivity, and high sensitivity. More interesting, the dual-emissive properties make 1 to be an excellent luminescence chemosensor to screen Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ from a pool of metal ions in H2O upon excitation at 300 nm via luminescence quenching effect and then discriminate Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ upon excitation at 365 nm via luminescence quenching, unaltered, and enhancement responses, respectively. On the other hand, the H2O suspension of 2 demonstrated an excitation-independent emission appearing at around 430 nm, which could be utilized to sensitively detect Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions with good anti-interference ability and excellent selectivity via luminescence quenching effect. Further, 1 and 2 were recyclability and possessed cycling stability. The plausible sensing mechanisms for 1 and 2 toward Fe3+, Cr3+, and Al3+ were also explored in detail.

Computational Insights on the Chemical Reactivity of Functionalized and Crosslinked Polyketones to Cu2+ Ion for Wastewater Treatment

Today, the high concentrations of copper found in water resources result in an urgent problem to solve since human health and aquatic ecosystems have been affected. Functionalized crosslinked polyketone resins (XLPK) have demonstrated high performance for the uptake of heavy metals in water solutions. In addition, its green chemical synthesis makes these resins very attractive as sorbents for metal ions contained in wastewater. XLPK are not soluble in aqueous media and do not require any catalyst, solvent, or harsh conditions to carry out the uptake process. In this paper, a series of functionalized XLPK with pending amino-derivatives namely; butylamine (BA), amino 2-propanol (A2P), 4-(aminomethyl) benzoic acid (HAMC), 6-aminohexanoic acid (PAMBA), and 1,2 diamino propane (DAP) directly attached to the pyrrole backbone of the polymers and crosslinked by di-amine derivatives was investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Our computational analysis revealed that dipole-dipole interactions played a crucial role in enhancing the adsorption of Cu2+ ions onto XLPKs. The negatively charged ketone moieties and functional groups within XLPKs were identified as key adsorption sites for the selective binding of Cu2+ ions. Additionally, we found that XLPKs exhibited strong electrostatic interactions primarily through the -NH2 and -C=O groups. Evaluation of the adsorption energies in XLPK-Cu(II) complexes showed that the DAP-Cu(II) complex exhibited the highest stability, attributed to strong Cu(II)-N binding facilitated by the amino moiety (-NH2). The remaining XLPKs displayed binding modes involving oxygen atoms (Cu(II)-O) within the ketone moieties in the polymer backbone. Furthermore, the complexation and thermochemical analysis emphasized the role of the coordinator atom (N or O) and the coordinating environment, in which higher entropic effects involved in the adsorption of Cu2+ ions onto XLPKs describes a lower spontaneity of the adsorption process. The adsorption reactions were favored at lower temperatures and higher pressures. These findings provide valuable insights into the reactivity and adsorption mechanisms of functionalized and crosslinked polyketones for Cu2+ uptake, facilitating the design of high-performance polymeric resins for water treatment applications.

Study on Gas Sorption and Iodine Uptake of a Metal-Organic Framework Based on Curcumin

Medi-MOF-1 is a highly porous Metal-Organic framework (MOF) constructed from Zn(II) and curcumin. The obtained crystal was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A micrometer-sized crystal with similar morphology was successfully obtained using the solvothermal method. Thanks to its high surface area, good stability, and abound pores, the as-synthesized medi-MOF-1 could be used as a functional porous material to adsorb different gases (H₂, CO₂, CH₄, and N₂) and iodine (I₂). The activated sample exhibited a high I₂ adsorption ability of 1.936 g g^-1 at room temperature via vapor diffusion. Meanwhile, the adsorbed I₂ could be released slowly in ethanol, confirming the potential application for I₂ adsorption.

Performance assessment of the MOF adsorbent MIL-101 for removal of gaseous benzene and toluene: kinetic column modeling and simulation studies of fixed-bed adsorption

The adsorbent MIL-101, a metal-organic framework material, was synthesized, characterized, and tested for removal of relatively low concentrations of benzene and toluene adsorbates (200 ppm) from a gas phase in a continuous flow system. Breakthrough studies were modeled based on Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, Yan, Clark, Bohart-Adams, bed-depth service time, modified dose response, Wolborska, and Gompertz in the continuous fixed-bed operation. Through statistical analysis, it was determined which type of regression is most suitable for the studied models, linear or nonlinear. By comparing the values of error functions, it was possible to infer that the Thomas model is the best match for the experimental breakthrough curves for benzene (with maximum solid-phase concentration qT=126,750 mg/g) and the Gompertz model for toluene (parameter β=0.01 min-1). Overall, when compared to the model parameters of the linear regression, those obtained through nonlinear regression show a stronger correlation with the results found experimentally. Thus, this type of regression is more suitable for the adsorption model analysis. The liquid film and intraparticle diffusion analysis was described, and it was suggested that both types of diffusion contribute to the adsorption mechanism of benzene and toluene on MIL-101. As for the isotherms, the adsorption process was better fitted by the Freundlich isotherm. The reusability of MIL-101 after six cycles was 76.5% for benzene and 62.4% for toluene, indicating that MIL-101 was a better adsorbent for the removal of benzene in comparison with toluene.

Surfactant-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the preparation of an active biocatalysis

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as ideal support materials thanks to their unique properties and have become the focus of interest in enzyme immobilization studies, especially in recent years. In order to increase the catalytic activity and stability of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL), a new fluorescence-based MOF (UiO-66-Nap) derived from UiO-66 was synthesized. The structures of the materials were confirmed by spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, ¹H NMR, SEM, and PXRD. CRL was immobilized on UiO-66-NH₂ and UiO-66-Nap by adsorption technique and immobilization and stability parameters of UiO-66-Nap@CRL were examined. Immobilized lipases UiO-66-Nap@CRL exhibited higher catalytic activity (204 U/g) than UiO-66-NH₂@CRL (168 U/g), which indicates that the immobilized lipase (UiO-66-Nap@CRL) carries sulfonate groups, this is due to strong ionic interactions between the surfactant's polar groups and certain charged locations on the protein surface. The Free CRL lost its catalytic activity completely at 60 °C after 100min, while UiO-66-NH₂@CRL and UiO-66-Nap@CRL retained 45% and 56% of their catalytic activity at the end of 120min, respectively. After 5 cycles, the activity of UiO-66-Nap@CRL remained 50%, while the activity of UiO-66-NH₂@CRL was about 40%. This difference is due to the surfactant groups (Nap) in UiO-66-Nap@CRL. These results show that the newly synthesized fluorescence-based MOF derivative (UiO-66-Nap) can be an ideal support material for enzyme immobilization and can be used successfully to protect and increase the activities of enzymes.

Insights into the statistical physics modeling and fractal like kinetic approach for the adsorption of As(III) on coordination polymer gel based on zirconium(IV) and 2-thiobarbituric acid

A novel coordination polymer gel based on zirconium(IV) and 2-thiobarbituric (ZrTBA) was synthesized and explored its potential to remediate As(III) from water. Box-Behnken design with desirability function and genetic algorithm yielded the optimized conditions (initial concentration=194 mg L^-1, dosage = 42.2 mg, time= 95 min and pH = 4.9) for maximum removal efficiency (99.19 %). The experimental saturation capacity for As(III) was 178.30 mg g^-1. The steric parameter n > 1 of the best fitted statistical physics model: monolayer with two energies (R² = 0.987-0.992) suggested multimolecular mechanism with vertical orientation of As(III) molecules onto the two active sites. XPS and FTIR confirmed the two active sites being zirconium and oxygen. The adsorption energies (E₁ = 35.81-37.63 kJ/mol; E₂ = 29.50-36.49 kJ/mol) and isosteric heat of adsorption indicated that physical forces governed the As(III) uptake. DFT calculations implied that the weak electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding were involved. The best fitted (R²>0.99) fractal like pseudo first order model established energetic heterogeneity. ZrTBA showed excellent removal efficiency in the presence of potential interfering ions and could be used up to 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption with < 8 % loss in the efficiency. ZrTBA removed ≥96.06 % As(III) from real water samples spiked at different levels of As(III).

Specific discrimination of zinc and manganese ions by label free dual emissive carbon dots by ratio-metric mode

Due to the worldwide ecological and environmental issues induced by heavy metal pollution, including zinc and manganese, the ratio-metric discrimination of Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ based on CDs is urgently required. In this work, reduced CDs (re-CDs) with the intrinsic dual emissive peaks are obtained, and specific discrimination of Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ is realized by re-CDs with ratio-metric mode. With the addition of Zn²⁺, the fluorescent (FL) intensity at 650 nm increases obviously, while that at 680 nm progressively decreases. However, the presence of Mn²⁺ would induce the quenching of FL intensity at 680 nm while that at 650 nm remains constant. Then the Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ can be separately determined with the ratio of FL intensity at 650 nm to that at 680 mm (F₆₅₀/F₆₈₀). Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of Zn²⁺ is determined to be 9.09 nmol/L, and that for Mn²⁺ is estimated to be 0.93 nmol/L, which is much lower than previously reported work and standard level of Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ permitted in drinking water by WHO. Moreover, the specific recognition of Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ can be realized via the addition of different masking agents (ethylenediamine for Zn²⁺ and triethanolamine for Mn²⁺). Furthermore, our results reveal that the structural changes from -NH-CO to -NC-OH induced by Zn²⁺ contribute to the shift of FL peak from 680 to 650 nm while both static and dynamic quenching processes are involved in the detection of Mn²⁺. The ratio-metric probe was successfully applied to Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ determination in human serum samples and Sandy Lake water.

Aqueous Pb(II) Removal Using ZIF-60: Adsorption Studies, Response Surface Methodology and Machine Learning Predictions

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are increasingly gaining attention in many application fields due to their outstanding porosity and thermal stability, among other exceptional characteristics. However, in the domain of water purification via adsorption, scientists have mainly focused on ZIF-8 and, to a lesser extent, ZIF-67. The performance of other ZIFs as water decontaminants is yet to be explored. Hence, this study applied ZIF-60 for the removal of lead from aqueous solutions; this is the first time ZIF-60 has been used in any water treatment adsorption study. The synthesized ZIF-60 was subjected to characterization using FTIR, XRD and TGA. A multivariate approach was used to investigate the effect of adsorption parameters on lead removal and the findings revealed that ZIF-60 dose and lead concentration are the most significant factors affecting the response (i.e., lead removal efficiency). Further, response surface methodology-based regression models were generated. To further explore the adsorption performance of ZIF-60 in removing lead from contaminated water samples, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamic investigations were conducted. The findings revealed that the obtained data were well-fitted by the Avrami and pseudo-first-order kinetic models, suggesting that the process is complex. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) was predicted to be 1905 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies revealed an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. Finally, the experimental data were aggregated and used for machine learning predictions using several algorithms. The model generated by the random forest algorithm proved to be the most effective on the basis of its significant correlation coefficient and minimal root mean square error (RMSE).

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Wastewater Treatment: Superior Adsorbent Materials for the Removal of Hazardous Pollutants

In previous years, different pollutants, for example, organic dyes, antibiotics, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural pollutants, have been of note to the water enterprise due to their insufficient reduction during standard water and wastewater processing methods. MOFs have been found to have potential toward wastewater management. This Review focused on the synthesis process (such as traditional, electrochemical, microwave, sonochemical, mechanochemical, and continuous-flow spray-drying method) of MOF materials. Moreover, the properties of the MOF materials have been discussed in detail. Further, MOF materials' applications for wastewater treatment (such as the removal of antibiotics, organic dyes, heavy metal ions, and agricultural waste) have been discussed. Additionally, we have compared the performances of some typical MOFs-based materials with those of other commonly used materials. Finally, the study's current challenges, future prospects, and outlook have been highlighted.

Gold Extracted from Wastewater as an Efficient MOF-Supported Electrocatalyst

The recovery of gold from wastewater is necessary from both environmental and economic standpoints. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can serve as high-capacity and selective adsorbents, as shown in a recent work by Zhao and co-workers. Their novel three-dimension cationic framework goes further than selectively adsorbing AuCl₄ ^- . It also serves as a stable platform to transform adsorbed gold into an efficient catalyst for the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ . This work highlights the versatility of MOFs, which can serve as selective adsorbents and as a support for nanoparticle catalysts.

Synthesis of a New Co Metal-Organic Framework Assembled from 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis((pyridin-4-yl) phenyl)porphyrin "Co-MTPhPyP" and Its Application to the Removal of Heavy Metal Ions

The synthesis of a Co metal-organic framework assembled from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis((pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)porphyrin; TPhPyP) "Co-MTPhPyP" is reported. The TPhPyP ligand was synthesized via aldehyde condensation in 28% yield and characterized by ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). Co-MTPhPyP was prepared by the solvothermal method from TPhPyP and CoCl₂·H₂O in 55% yield and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field-emission scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (FESEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS), showing a particle size distribution of 418 ± 58 nm. The sorption properties of the Co-MTPhPyP for the effective removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) were evaluated in an aqueous medium and Cthe results showed uptake capacities of 383.4 and 168 mg of the metal g^-1 after 2 h, respectively. Kinetic studies of Pb(II) adsorption by Co-MTPhPyP were adjusted to the pseudo-second-order model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 458.8 mg g^-1 at 30 min of exposition.

Ionic liquid functionalized trapezoidal Zn-MOF nanosheets integrated with gold nanoparticles for photoelectrochemical immunosensing alpha-fetoprotein

An imidazolium based ionic liquid was successfully prepared and used as an organic ligand to coordinate with Zn²⁺ to prepare trapezoidal metal-organic frameworks (Zn-MOF) nanosheets. Then, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were integrated onto Zn-MOF nanosheets surface to produce AuNPs@Zn-MOF nanocomposites by in-situ reduction of chloroauric acid. AuNPs with size less than 5 nm were uniformly dispersed on the entire surface of Zn-MOF nanosheets. AuNPs can significantly promote the photocurrent response of Zn-MOF nanosheets and supply an efficient photoelectrochemical sensing platform for fabricating an immunosensor for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). For AFP determination, the photocurrent response of the immunosensor was linearly related to the logarithm of AFP concentration in the range of 0.005-15.0 ng/mL. The detection limit was calculated to be 1.88 pg/mL. The PEC immunosensor can be facilely fabricated, and provided some superior analytical characteristics such as excellent selectivity, sensitivity, stability and reproducibility for AFP determination. Practicability of the photoelectrochemical immunosensor was demonstrated by using it in assaying AFP in clinical serum samples.

Overview on recent advances of magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites in removal of heavy metals from aqueous system

Developing a novel, simple, and cost-effective analytical technique with high enrichment capacity and selectivity is crucial for environmental monitoring and remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous coordination polymers that are self-assembly synthesized from organic linkers and inorganic metal ions/metal clusters. Magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites are promising candidate among the new-generation sorbent materials available for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of environmental contaminants due to their superparamagnetism properties, high crystallinity, permanent porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adaptable pore shape/sizes, tunable functionality, designable framework topology, rapid and ultrahigh adsorption capacity, and reusability. In this review, we focus on recent scientific progress in the removal of heavy metal ions present in contaminated aquatic system by using MMOF composites. Different types of MMOFs, their synthetic approaches, and various properties that are harnessed for removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated water are discussed briefly. Adsorption mechanisms involved, adsorption capacity, and regeneration of the MMOF sorbents as well as recovery of heavy metal ions adsorbed that are reported in the last ten years have been discussed in this review. Moreover, particular prospects, challenges, and opportunities in future development of MMOFs towards their greener synthetic approaches for their practical industrial applications have critically been considered in this review.

A review on recent advancements on removal of harmful metal/metal ions using graphene oxide: Experimental and theoretical approaches

Graphene oxide is a two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial and has gained huge popularity over the last decade. Because, the graphene oxide can be dispersed in water easily and it is one of the most researched two-dimensional materials in the current time. The extraordinary properties shown by graphene oxide (GO) are due to its unique chemical structure; includes various hydrophilic functional groups containing oxygen such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl and tiny sp² carbon domains surrounded by sp³ domains. These groups are very peculiar for various applications as they allow covalent functionalisation with a plethora of compounds. Large surface area, intrinsic fluorescence, excellent surface functionality, amphiphilicity, improved conductivity, high adsorption capacity and superior biocompatibility are some of the chemical properties have drawn research from various fields. Graphene oxide has various interactions such as coordination, chelation, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic effects, π-π interaction, acid base interaction etc., with various metal ions. This review is focused on the removal of metals and metal ions due to their interactions mentioned above. Further, potential of composites of graphene oxide in the removal of metal and metal ions is also discussed. Further, the current challenges in this field at industrial-scale are also discussed.

Piezocatalytic Techniques in Environmental Remediation

As a consequence of rapid industrialization throughout the world, various environmental pollutants have begun to accumulate in water, air, and soil. This endangers the ecological environment of the earth, and environmental remediation has become an immediate priority. Among various environmental remediation techniques, piezocatalytic techniques, which uniquely take advantage of the piezoelectric effect, have attracted much attention. Piezoelectric effects allow pollutant degradation directly, while also enhancing photocatalysis by reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent developments in piezocatalytic techniques for environmental remediation. The origin of the piezoelectric effect as well as classification of piezoelectric materials and their application in environmental remediation are systematically summarized. We also analyze the potential underlying mechanisms. Finally, urgent problems and the future development of piezocatalytic techniques are discussed.

Functional Micro-/Nanostructures in Agrofood Science: Precise Inspection, Hazard Elimination, and Potential Health Risks

Nanotechnology, biotechniques, and chemical engineering have arisen as new trends with significant impacts on agrofood science development. Advanced analytical techniques with high sensitivity, specificity, and automation based on micro-/nanomaterials for food hazard elimination have become leading research hotspots in agrofood science. Research progress in micro-/nanomaterials has provided a solid theoretical basis and technical support to solve problems in the industry. However, the rapid development of micro-/nanostructures has also raised concerns regarding potential risks to human health. This review presents the latest advances in the precise inspection and elimination of food hazards from micro-/nanomaterials and discusses the potential threats to human health posed by nanomaterials. The theoretical reference was provided for the application trend of micro-/nanomaterials in the field of agrofood science in the future.

Porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks as molybdenum adsorbents for the 99Mo/99mTc generator

Two porphyrinic metal–organic frameworks (PCN-222 and PCN-224) were prepared and their potential as molybdenum adsorbents for the 99Mo/99mTc generator was explored.

MOF@biomass hybrids: Trends on advanced functional materials for adsorption

This contribution aims to demonstrate the scope of new hybrids between biomass and metal-organic frameworks (MOF@biomass) used in the adsorption process of pollutants. After a brief presentation of the use of the main series of MOFs as efficient adsorbents for different types of pollutants, the limitations of these structures related to particle size and hydrodynamic problems during their application are highlighted. Lignocellulosic biomasses are also recognized as an alternative adsorbent, mainly due to their high natural abundance and their low environmental impact during and after their application. The limited capacity of bioadsorbents becomes important in this research. Consequently, the largest amount of information existing in the last ten years on MOF-Biomass functionalization as a hybrid and improvement technology for adsorption processes is compiled, analyzed, compared and contrasted. So far, there is no evidence of works that exploit the concept of functionalization of adsorbents of different nature to give rise to new hybrid materials. Through this review it was found that the hybrids obtained show a higher adsorption capacity (Qe) compared to their precursors, due to the increase of organic functional groups provided by the biomass. Thus, for heavy metals, dyes, Arsenium anions and other organic and pharmaceutical compounds, there are increases in Qe of about 100 mg g^-1. The possibility of the new hybrid being studied for desorption and reuse processes is also raised, resulting in a new line of research that is attractive for the industry from an economic and environmental point of view. The functionalization methods and techniques used in the studies cited in this article are outlined. In conclusion, this research brings a new horizon of study in the field of adsorption and mentions the main future challenges related to new sustainable applications.

Polyaminophosphoric Acid-Modified Ion-Imprinted Chitosan Aerogel with Enhanced Antimicrobial Activity for Selective La(III) Recovery and Oil/Water Separation

In this study, polyaminophosphoric acid (PA)-functionalized ion-imprinted chitosan (CS) aerogel was fabricated for the first time, exhibiting good antibacterial property for selective La(III) recovery and oil/water separation. The as-prepared PA-CS-IIA-2 shows a remarkable adsorption capacity of 114.6 mg/g toward La(III) and high selectivity in the competitive adsorption systems, which is attributed to its abundant imprinting sites and surface functional groups. Benefiting from the amphiphilic property, the PA-CS-IIA-2 also exhibits an excellent adsorption performance for the extractant, oils, and organic solvents. Besides, the PA-CS-IIA-2 presents excellent regeneration and reusability characteristics. Moreover, compared with CS, the PA-CS-IIA-2 exhibits a significantly improved antibacterial activity originating from the PA component. Most importantly, the PA-CS-IIA-2 aerogel is capable of removing multiple pollutants all together and effectively inhibiting bacteria in the complex wastewater environments. Therefore, this study paves the way for developing high-performance rare-earth capture materials with multiple functions to meet diverse applications.
