Metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks for the remediation of aqueous dye solutions: Adsorptive, catalytic and extractive processes

Smartphone-assisted detection of trace methyl orange in water by ratiometric nanosensors based on down/up-conversion luminescence

A ratiometric nanosensor was developed for detecting methyl orange (MO) based on down/up-conversion luminescence achieved by a triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion luminescence (TTA-UCL) system. The probe, utilizing sensitizer and annihilator fluorophores encapsulated in nanomicelles, demonstrated high sensitivity and selectivity for MO detection. The energy transfer from UCL to MO endowed the sensor with responsive capabilities. The unaffected triplet-triplet energy transfer process maintained the phosphorescence signal constant, serving as a reference to construct the ratiometric sensor along with the UCL signal. Additionally, a smartphone-assisted colorimetric detection method was also developed based on the ratiometric sensor, enabling rapid and convenient detection of MO without the need for a spectrometer. The performance of the nanosensor in real water samples confirmed its potential for practical environmental applications.

Removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution using a novel pyrene appended Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework and its photocatalytic properties

In this study, we report the efficient removal of organic dyes from aqueous solutions using a newly synthesized pyrene-appended Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF), ZnSiF6Pyrene MOF, with the chemical formula C52H32F6N4SiZn·4(CHCl3). The MOF was synthesized through a facile method at room temperature using a dipyridylpyrene ligand and ZnSiF6 metal source, resulting in a highly crystalline structure with pyrene functional groups forming the framework. The synthesized MOF was characterized using various analytical techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal stability was assessed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), while the surface area of the MOF was determined using a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface analyzer. Furthermore, the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) structure was studied to authenticate its solid-state structure. The as-synthesized MOF exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity towards various organic dyes, including Congo red (CR), rhodamine B (RhB), and methyl violet (MV), due to its ample surface area and strong π-π interactions between the pyrene moieties and dye molecules, as demonstrated by experimental and in silico docking studies. The photocatalytic degradation of MV dye was also investigated. Detailed trapping tests indicate that hydroxyl (˙OH) and superoxide (O2˙-) radicals are likely the primary active species responsible for the photodegradation of the dye under study. Furthermore, the photocatalytic property of the MOF was investigated under visible light irradiation, demonstrating excellent ability to generate singlet oxygen. This study highlights the potential of pyrene-appended Zn(II)-based MOFs as promising materials for environmental remediation applications.

Novel pillar[n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles: Preparation and application in quantitative analysis of trace perfluorinated compounds from aqueous samples

BACKGROUND

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of widely manufactured and used emerging persistent pollutants. The recent discovered new class of macrocycles pillararenes have garnered significant attention for the applications in environmental pollutant adsorption, with abundant π electron cavities, a symmetrical rigid structure, and host-guest recognition capabilities.

RESULTS

In this work, we designed and synthesized novel cationic pillar [n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles (CWPA5@MNPs), and investigated its adsorption performance and mechanism as a type of new adsorbent for the enrichment of PFCs. The results indicate that CWPA5@MNPs exhibits selectively strong affinity for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and long-chain (C9-C14) perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), with the adsorption efficiency exceeding 80 % within 12 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of CWPA5@MNPs for PFOS was measured to be 29.02 mg/g. CWPA5@MNPs can be rapidly isolated from the solution using external magnets, offering a quick and easy separation. Consequently, this study established a CWPA5@MNPs-assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (CWPA5@MNPs-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS) method for the rapid detection of trace levels of PFCs in environmental water samples. The analysis of 7 PFCs yielded recovery rates ranging from 86.1 % to 107.5 %, with intraday and interday relative standard deviations (RSD) of 3.6-6.4 % and 1.3-7.0 %, respectively.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

The study reveals the synthesis and application of novel cationic pillar [n]arenes magnetic nanoparticles (CWPA5@MNPs) as highly efficient adsorbents for selective perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in water samples. It demonstrates the potential of the newly developed CWPA5@MNPs-MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method for the quantitative analysis of PFCs in environment, with high sensitivity, accuracy and stability.

Novel three-dimensional fibrous covalent organic frameworks constructed via silver amalgam bridging for efficient organic dye adsorption and removal

The construction of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with unique structures has great significance in exploring the structure-function relationship and extending their potential applications. Fibrous COFs have demonstrated superior performance in specific application scenarios owing to the distinctive three-dimensional (3D) structure. Herein, we report a facile strategy for the fabrication of 3D COF nanofiber by exploiting silver amalgam as a bridging agent to assemble one-dimensional-extended PA-COF modules into a tubular structure. Dimensions of the obtained 3D COF nanofiber were predicted by DFT calculations, and the nanofiber was endowed with the merits of favorable uniformity and high stability. Due to the enhanced exposure of conjugatable binding sites for dye retention offered by the novel 3D architecture, the PA-COF nanofiber exhibits fast adsorption (within 5 min) and superior adsorption capacity to various organic dyes, e.g., 1717 mg g-1 for methylene blue (MB) and 978.3 mg g-1 for methyl orange (MO). Moreover, the PA-COF nanofiber shows excellent reusability in dye adsorption, which makes it a potential medium for removing dye pollutants from wastewater. This work presents an effective strategy to construct COF materials with unique architecture and potential prospects in the fields of separation and wastewater treatment.

When covalent organic frameworks meet zeolites: Enhancing rhodamine B removal through the synergy in the emerging organic-inorganic nanoadsorbents

The development of new porous materials has attracted intense attention as adsorbents for removing pollutants from wastewater. However, pure inorganic and organic porous materials confront various problems in purifying the wastewater. In this work, we integrated a covalent organic framework (TpPa-1) with an inorganic zeolite (TS-1) for the first time via a solvothermal method to fabricate new-type nanoadsorbents. The covalent organic framework/zeolite (TpPa-1/TS-1) nanoadsorbents combined the merits of the zeolite and COF components and possessed efficient adsorptive removal of organic contaminants from solution. Structural morphology and chemical composition characterization by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated the successful preparation of TpPa-1/TS-1 composite nanoadsorbents. The resultant composite adsorbent TpPa-1/TS-1 removed rhodamine B at 1.7 and 2.6 times the efficiency of TpPa-1 and TS-1, respectively. Additional investigation revealed that the Freundlich adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could be employed to represent the adsorption process more appropriately. Thermodynamic calculation analysis showed that the adsorption process proceeded spontaneously and exothermically. Besides, the effects of pH, absorbent mass and ionic strength on the adsorption performance were systematically investigated. The prepared composite adsorbent showed a slight decrease in removal efficiency after eight cycles of repeated use, and real water environment experiments also showed the high stability of the adsorbent. The enhanced performance can be attributed to electrostatic interaction, acid-base interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions.

Imaging the Iodine Sorption-Induced Synchronous Skeleton-Pore Interactions of Single Covalent Organic Framework Particles

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising iodine adsorbents. For improved performances, it is critical and essential to fundamentally understand the underlying mechanism. Here, using the operando dark-field optical microscopy (DFM) imaging technique, the observation of an extraordinary structure shrinkage of 2D triphenylbenzene (TPB)-dimethoxyterephthaldehyde (DMTP)-COF upon the adsorption of I2 vapor at the single-particle resolution is reported. Combining single-particle DFM imaging with other experimental and theoretical methods, it is revealed that the shrinkage mechanism of the TPB-DMTP-COF is attributed to the I2 sorption-induced synchronous skeleton-pore interactions. The redox reaction of I2 and TPB-DMTP-COF yields some cationic skeletons and I3 - species, which triggers the multi-directional halogen-bonding interactions of I2 and I3 - as well as strong cation-π interactions between neutral and cationic skeletons, accompanying the synchronous in-plane skeleton shrinking in the xy plane and compact out-of-plane layer packing in the z-direction. This understanding of the synchronous action between the skeleton and pore breaks the perspective on the structure robustness of 2D COFs with excellent stability during the I2 uptake, which offers pivotal guidance for the rational design and creation of advanced microporous adsorbents.

Internal Superwettability Inversion of a COF-Encapsulated Melamine Sponge Prepared by a One-Step Synthesis at Room Temperature

Superwettable materials have been attracting attention due to their unique properties, showing great application prospects in a variety of fields including oil-water separation. Herein, a kind of covalent organic framework (COF)-encapsulated melamine sponge (MS) capable of internal superwettability inversion is prepared by a one-step synthesis at room temperature. COF is produced in situ on the skeleton of MS, which is favorable for practical application, and the prepared COF-encapsulated sponge (MS@COF) exhibits superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of about 157.0°) due to the rough surface provided by the micro/nanostructure of COF. More importantly, MS@COF displays reversibly superhydrophilicity by simple prewetting, achieving superwettability inversion conveniently, unlike the previous switchable materials that rely on external conditions. This facile intrinsic superwettability inversion greatly enriches the application prospects of this kind of smart sponge.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/C-dots and covalent organic framework (COF)/C-dots hybrid nanocomposites: Fabrications and applications in sensing, medical, environmental, and energy sectors

Developing new hybrid materials is critical for addressing the current needs of the world in various fields, such as energy, sensing, health, hygiene, and others. C-dots are a member of the carbon nanomaterial family with numerous applications. Aggregation is one of the barriers to the performance of C-dots, which causes luminescence quenching, surface area decreases, etc. To improve the performance of C-dots, numerous matrices including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and polymers have been composited with C-dots. The porous crystalline structures, which are constituents of metal nodes and organic linkers (MOFs) or covalently attached organic units (COFs) provide privileged features such as high specific surface area, tunable structures, and pore diameters, modifiable surface, high thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities. Also, the MOFs and COFs protect the C-dots from the environment. Therefore, MOF/C-dots and COF/C-dots composites combine their features while retaining topological properties and improving performances. In this review, we first compare MOFs with COFs as matrices for C-dots. Then, the recent progress in developing hybrid MOFs/C-dots and COFs/C-dots composites has been discussed and their applications in various fields have been explained briefly.

Nanocomposites against Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms: Recent advances, challenges, and future prospects

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes life-threatening and persistent infections in immunocompromised patients. It is the culprit behind a variety of hospital-acquired infections owing to its multiple tolerance mechanisms against antibiotics and disinfectants. Biofilms are sessile microbial aggregates that are formed as a result of the cooperation and competition between microbial cells encased in a self-produced matrix comprised of extracellular polymeric constituents that trigger surface adhesion and microbial aggregation. Bacteria in biofilms exhibit unique features that are quite different from planktonic bacteria, such as high resistance to antibacterial agents and host immunity. Biofilms of P. aeruginosa are difficult to eradicate due to intrinsic, acquired, and adaptive resistance mechanisms. Consequently, innovative approaches to combat biofilms are the focus of the current research. Nanocomposites, composed of two or more different types of nanoparticles, have diverse therapeutic applications owing to their unique physicochemical properties. They are emerging multifunctional nanoformulations that combine the desired features of the different elements to obtain the highest functionality. This review assesses the recent advances of nanocomposites, including metal-, metal oxide-, polymer-, carbon-, hydrogel/cryogel-, and metal organic framework-based nanocomposites for the eradication of P. aeruginosa biofilms. The characteristics and virulence mechanisms of P. aeruginosa biofilms, as well as their devastating impact and economic burden are discussed. Future research addressing the potential use of nanocomposites as innovative anti-biofilm agents is emphasized. Utilization of nanocomposites safely and effectively should be further strengthened to confirm the safety aspects of their application.

Synergistically enhancing the selective adsorption of cationic dyes through copper impregnation and amino functionality into iron-based metal-organic frameworks

Dyes contaminating the sewages have seriously threatened the living beings and their separation from wastewater in terms of potential resource recovery is of high value. Herein, both of metal node doping and ligand group grafting were taken into account to enhance the adsorption selectivity of Fe-MOFs towards cationic dyes. The positive correlation between copper doping amount and selective coefficient (∂MOMB) for methylene blue (MB) over methyl orange (MO) within a certain range was mainly attributed to the increased surface negative charges via partial replacement of Fe(III) with Cu(II). Moreover, the amount of surface negative charges was further increased after amino functionalization and there was a synergism between Cu(II) and -NH2 in selectivity enhancement. As a result, Fe0.6Cu0.4-BDC-NH2 exhibited a 22.5-times increase in ∂MOMB and other cationic dyes including malachite green (MG) and rhodamine B (Rh. B) could also be selectively separated from binary and quaternary mixed dye systems. Moreover, Fe0.6Cu0.4-BDC-NH2 showed many superiorities like a wide pH range of 4.0-8.0, strong anti-interference ability over various inorganic ions, good recyclability, and stability. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm suggested that the MB adsorption process was a homogeneous single-layer chemisorption. Additionally, the thermodynamics manifested that the overall process was exothermic and spontaneous. According to the FT-IR and XPS spectra analysis, the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding were determined as the main driving forces, and π-π interaction also contributed to the adsorption process.

Superior Adsorptive Removal of Anionic Azo Dyes from Aqueous Solutions Using Sulfonic Acid Group-Modified MIL-101@Graphene Oxide Composite

It is critical to remove organic contaminants from wastewater released by the printing and dyeing industry for addressing water pollution issue. Therefore, the fabrication of new adsorbents with excellent removal efficiencies is an urgent task. A composite of MIL-101 partially functionalized with -SO3H (MIL-101-SO3H) and graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by assembling MIL-101-SO3H truncated octahedrons on the GO framework. The synthesized MIL-101-SO3H@GO has a superior adsorption efficiency for anionic azo dyes. The maximum adsorption capacities of MIL-101-SO3H@GO-1 for Congo red, methyl orange, acid orange 7, and acid orange G reached 2711.3, 818.8, 551.2, and 319.8 mg/g, respectively, which are considerably higher than those obtained using unmodified MIL-101. This is because additional interactions that promote azo dye adsorption, such as hydrogen bonding between the dye and the sulfonic acid groups of MIL-101-SO3H or the carboxyl groups of GO, were induced, and agglomerate pores that accommodated the dye were formed in the composite. The ultrahigh removal efficiency of the composite for azo dyes is mainly driven by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking between the MIL-101-SO3H@GO and dye molecules, synergistic interactions at the interface of GO and MIL-101-SO3H microcrystals, and the pore-filling effect. Understanding these driving forces for dye adsorption can contribute to the development of sustainable and functionally modified metal-organic framework composite adsorbents.

Emerging iron-based mesoporous materials for adsorptive removal of pollutants: Mechanism, optimization, challenges, and future perspective

Iron-based materials (IBMs) have shown promise as adsorbents due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review provides an overview of the different types of IBMs, their synthesis methods, and their properties. Results found in the adsorption of emerging contaminants to a wide range of IBMs are discussed. The IBMs used were evaluated in terms of their maximum uptake capacity, with special consideration given to environmental conditions such as contact time, solution pH, initial pollutant concentration, etc. The adsorption mechanisms of pollutants are discussed taking into account the results of kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic studies, surface complexation modelling (SCM), and available spectroscopic data. A current overview of molecular modeling and simulation studies related to density functional theory (DFT), surface response methodology (RSM), and artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. In addition, the reusability and suitability of IBMs in real wastewater treatment is shown. The review concludes with the strengths and weaknesses of current research and suggests ideas for future research that will improve our ability to remove contaminants from real wastewater streams.

Covalent Organic Framework-derived Composite Membranes for Water Treatment

Water treatment has experienced a surge in the adoption of membrane separation technology. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of metal-free and open-framework materials, have emerged as potential membrane materials owing to their interconnected periodic porosity, tunability, and chemical stability. However, the challenges associated with processing COF powders into self-standing membranes have spurred the emergence of COF composite membranes. This review article highlights the rationale behind developing COF composite membranes and their categories, including mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) and thin film composite (TFC) membranes. The common fabrication techniques of each category are presented. In addition, the influence of COF additives on the performance of the resultant composite membranes is systematically discussed, with a focus on the recent progress in applying COF composite membranes in the separation of different categories of water pollutants, including organic ions/molecules, toxic solvents, proteins, toxic heavy metals, and radionuclides.

Environmental remediation of hazardous pollutants using MXene-perovskite-based photocatalysts: A review

Photocatalysis utilizing semiconductors offer a cost-effective and promising solution for the removal of pollutants. MXene and perovskites, which possess desirable properties such as a suitable bandgap, stability, and affordability, have emerged as a highly promising material for photocatalytic activity. However, the efficiency of MXene and perovskites is limited by their fast recombination rates and inadequate light harvesting abilities. Nonetheless, several additional modifications have been shown to enhance their performance, thereby warranting further exploration. This study delves into the fundamental principles of reactive species for MXene-perovskites. Various methods of modification of MXene-perovskite-based photocatalysts, including Schottky junction, Z-scheme and S-scheme are analyzed with regard to their operation, differences, identification techniques and reusability. The assemblance of heterojunctions is demonstrated to enhance photocatalytic activity while also suppressing charge carrier recombination. Furthermore, the separation of photocatalysts through magnetic-based methods is also investigated. Consequently, MXene-perovskite-based photocatalysts are seen as an exciting emerging technology that necessitates further research and development.

Simultaneous adsorption of ciprofloxacin drug and methyl violet dye on boron nitride nanosheets: experimental and theoretical insights

In this study, hexagonal boron nitride (BN) with a sheet-like morphology is successfully synthesized by reacting borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O) and urea (CO(NH2)2) powders in air via a facile microwave-assisted method within a short reaction time (15 min). The as-prepared product is structurally characterized via Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersion X-ray analyzer (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements. The adsorption process of methyl violet (MV) as a model of organic dyes and ciprofloxacin (CIP) as a model of antibiotics onto the boron nitride nanosheets has been experimentally and theoretically studied. The BN nanosheets exhibit the maximum adsorption capacity of 320.94 mg g-1 for MV dye and 266.29 mg g-1 for CIP antibiotic. The Freundlich isotherm model was suitable to describe the adsorption equilibrium isotherm data and the pseudo second-order model reflected the adsorption kinetics well. The calculated thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption process is spontaneous under the measured conditions. The adsorption of CIP, MV and CIP + MV molecules on the surface of BN has been investigated through DFT calculations. The charge transfer and high adsorption capacity demonstrate the potential of BN nanosheets as an adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of MV dye and CIP drug from contaminated water.

Co-adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation in the efficient removal of methylene blue by MIL-88B@UiO-66 nanoflowers

Development of binary MOF-on-MOF heterostructures is a research hotspot in MOFs chemistry due to the advantages elicited by a closely connected interface, which may endow more abundant functionality and even broader applications in interface chemistry. A MOF-on-MOF heterostructure was constructed by in situ growth of MIL-88B on the outer surface of UiO-66. The resultant MIL-88B@UiO-66 produced had an interesting flower-like morphology composed of MIL-88B (petal) on tetrahedral UiO-66 (core). The MIL-88B@UiO-66 heterostructure showed adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation abilities, with distinctly improved structural stability in aqueous solution compared with that of single MIL-88B. Methylene blue (MB) was selected as the target molecule to evaluate the adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation activities. The efficiency of total removal of MB was studied systematically under various operating conditions and the influencing factors were optimized. The kinetics of adsorption and catalytic oxidation were simulated to explore the interactions between MB and MIL-88B@UiO-66. The mechanisms of enhanced adsorption and Fenton-like oxidation were suggested. The cyclic removal performance and structural stability of MIL-88B@UiO-66 were also determined.

Preparation of benzenesulfonyl hydrazone modified guar gum and its adsorption properties for dyes and phytotoxicity assays

Herein, a novel environmentally friendly benzenesulfonyl hydrazone modified guar gum (DGH) that carries excellent adsorption performance towards dyes was facilely prepared through oxidation and condensation. The structure, morphology, and physics-chemical of DGH were fully characterized by multiple analysis techniques. The as-prepared adsorbent yielded highly efficient separating performance towards multiple anionic and cation dyes, including CR, MG, and ST with the maximum adsorption capacity of 1065.3839 ± 10.5695, 1256.4467 ± 2.9425, and 1043.8140 ± 0.9789 mg/g at 298.15 K, respectively. The adsorption process well fitted the Langmuir isotherm models and the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption thermodynamics revealed that the adsorption of dyes onto DGH was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism indicated that the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction participated in the fast and efficient removal of dyes. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of DGH still remained above 90 % after six adsorption-desorption cycles, and the presence of Na⁺, Ca²⁺, and Mg²⁺ have weakly impacted the removal efficiency of DGH. The phytotoxicity assay was conducted via the germination of mung bean seeds, which confirmed the adsorbent can effectivity decreased the toxicity of dyes. Overall, the modified gum-based multifunctional material has good promising applications for wastewater treatment.

Quantitative colorimetric sensing of heavy metal ions via analyte-promoted growth of Au nanoparticles with timer or smartphone readout

This work describes two new colorimetric nanosensors for label-free, equipment-free quantitative detection of nanomolar copper (II) (Cu²⁺) and mercury (II) (Hg²⁺) ions. Both are based on the analyte-promoted growth of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) from the reduction of chloroauric acid by 4-morpholineethanesulfonic acid. For the Cu²⁺ nanosensor, the analyte can accelerate such a redox system to rapidly form a red solution containing dispersed, uniform, spherical AuNPs that is related to these particles' surface plasmon resonance property. For the Hg²⁺ nanosensor, on the other hand, a blue mixture consisting of aggregated, ill-defined AuNPs with various sizes can be created, showing a significantly enhanced Tyndall effect (TE) signal (in comparison with that produced in the red solution of AuNPs). By using a timer and a smartphone to quantitatively measure the time of producing the red solution and the TE intensity (i.e., the average gray value of the corresponding image) of the blue mixture, respectively, the developed nanosensors are well demonstrated to achieve linear ranges of 6.4 nM to 100 μM and 6.1 nM to 1.56 μM for Cu²⁺ and Hg²⁺, respectively, with detection limits down to 3.5 and 0.1 nM, respectively. The acceptable recovery results obtained from the analysis of the two analytes in the complex real water samples including drinking water, tap water, and pond water ranged from 90.43 to 111.56%.

Regulating the assembly and expansion of the silver cluster from the Ag37 to Ag46 nanowheel driven by heteroanions

Precise control over the shape and size of metal nanoclusters through anion template-driven self-assembly is one of the key scientific goals in the nanocluster community, however, it is still not understood comprehensively. In this work, we report the controllable synthesis and atomically precise structures of silver nanowheels Ag37 and Ag46, using homo (Cl^- ions) and heteroanion (Cl^- and CrO₄ ^2- ions) template strategies, along with macrocyclic p-phenyl-thiacalix[4]arene and small ⁱPrS^- ligands. Structural analyses revealed that in Ag37, Cl^- ions serve as both local and global templates, whereas CrO₄ ^2- ions function as local and Cl^- ions as global templates in Ag46, resulting in a pentagonal nanowheel (Ag37) and a hexagonal (Ag46) nanowheel. The larger ionic size and more negative charges of CrO₄ ^2- ions than Cl^- ions offer more coordination sites for the silver atoms and are believed to be the key factors that drive the nanowheel core to expand significantly. Also, by taking advantage of the deep cavity of thiacalix[4]arene with an extended phenyl group, Ag46 has been used as a host material for dye adsorption depending on the charge and size of organic dyes. The successful use of heteroanions to control the expansion of well-defined silver nanowheels fills the knowledge gap in understanding the directing role of heteroanions in dictating the shape and size of nanoclusters at the atomic level.

Terrestrial nanoparticle contaminants and geospatial optics using the Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite in the Tinto River estuary region of the Iberian Peninsula

The Tinto River is known globally for having a reddish color due to the high concentration of dissolved metals in its waters. The general objective of this study is to analyze the dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) and ultra-fine particles in terrestrial and geospatial suspended sediments (SSs) using Sentinel-3B OLCI (Ocean Land Color Instrument) satellite images; by examining water turbidity levels (TSM_NN), suspended pollution potential (ADG_443_NN) and presence of chlorophyll-a (CHL_NN). The images were collected in the estuary of the Tinto River, in the city of Nerva, Spanish province of Huelva, between 2019 and 2021. The following hazardous elements were identified in nanoparticles and ultra-fine particles by FE-SEM/EDS: As, Cd, Ni, V, Se, Mo, Pb, Sb and Sn. Sentinel-3B OLCI satellite images detected a 2019 TSM_NN of 23.47 g^-3, and a 2021 reading of 16.38 g^-3.

Sustainable Hierarchical-Pored PAAS-PNIPAAm Hydrogel with Core-Shell Structure Tailored for Highly Efficient Atmospheric Water Harvesting

As an effective way to obtain freshwater resources, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology has been a wide concern of researchers. Therefore, hydrogels gradually become key materials for atmospheric water harvesters due to their high specific surface area and three-dimensional porous structure. Here, we construct a core-shell hydrogel-based atmospheric water harvesting material consisting of a shell sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) hydrogel with an open pore structure and a core thermosensitive poly N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAm) hydrogel with a large pore size. Theoretically, the mutual synergistic hygroscopic effect between the core layer and the shell layer accelerates the capture, transport, and storage of moisture to achieve continuous and high-capacity moisture adsorption. Simultaneously, the integration of polydopamine (PDA) with the hydrogel realizes solar-driven photothermal evaporation. Therefore, the prepared core-shell hydrogel material possesses great advantages in water adsorption capacity and water desorption capacity with an adsorption of 2.76 g g^-1 (90% RH) and a desorption of 1.42 kg m^-2 h^-1. Additionally, the core-shell structure hydrogel collects 1.31 g g^-1 day^-1 of fresh water in outdoor experiments, which verifies that this core-shell hydrogel with integrated photothermal properties can capture moisture in a wide range of humidity without any external energy consumption, can further sustainably obtain fresh water in remote water-shortage areas.

Altered zirconium dioxide based photocatalyst for enhancement of organic pollutants degradation: A review

Heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes are a promising approach for cost-efficient removal of pollutants using semiconductors. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) is an auspicious material for photocatalytic activity owning to its suitable bandgap, stability, and low cost. However, ZrO₂ suffers from fast recombination rate, and poor light harvesting ability. Nonetheless, extra modification has also shown improvements and therefore is worth investigating. The endeavour of this paper initially discusses the fundamentals with respect to reactive species, classification, and synthesis methods for ZrO₂. Furthermore, with particular consideration to stability and reusability, several additional modification approaches for ZrO₂-based photocatalysts such as doping and noble metals loading. Furthermore, the formation of heterojunctions has also been shown to boost photocatalytic activity while inhibiting charge carrier recombination. Finally, photocatalyst separation via magnetic-based photocatalysts are elucidated. As a result, ZrO₂-based photocatalysts are regarded as a promising emerging technology that warrants further development and research.

β-Ketoenamine Covalent Organic Frameworks—Effects of Functionalization on Pollutant Adsorption

Water pollution due to global economic activity is one of the greatest environmental concerns, and many efforts are currently being made toward developing materials capable of selectively and efficiently removing pollutants and contaminants. A series of β-ketoenamine covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been synthesized, by reacting 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) with different C2-functionalized and nonfunctionalized diamines, in order to evaluate the influence of wall functionalization and pore size on the adsorption capacity toward dye and heavy metal pollutants. The obtained COFs were characterized by different techniques. The adsorption of methylene blue (MB), which was used as a model for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals and dyes, was initially evaluated. Adsorption studies showed that –NO₂ and –SO₃H functional groups were favorable for MB adsorption, with TpBd(SO₃H)₂-COF [100%], prepared between TFP and 4,4′-diamine- [1,1′-biphenyl]-2,2′-disulfonic acid, achieving the highest adsorption capacity (166 ± 13 mg g⁻¹). The adsorption of anionic pollutants was less effective and decreased, in general, with the increase in –SO₃H and –NO₂ group content. The effect of ionic interactions on the COF performance was further assessed by carrying out adsorption experiments involving metal ions. Isotherms showed that nonfunctionalized and functionalized COFs were better described by the Langmuir and Freundlich sorption models, respectively, confirming the influence of functionalization on surface heterogeneity. Sorption kinetics experiments were better adjusted according to a second-order rate equation, confirming the existence of surface chemical interactions in the adsorption process. These results confirm the influence of selective COF functionalization on adsorption processes and the role of functional groups on the adsorption selectivity, thus clearly demonstrating the potential of this new class of materials in the efficient and selective capture and removal of pollutants in aqueous solutions.

Magnetic UiO-66 functionalized with 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-stilbenedisulfonic as a highly recoverable acid catalyst for the synthesis of 4H-chromenes in green solvent

According to 4H-chromenes importance, we synthesized a novel magnetic UiO-66 functionalized with 4,4′-diamino-2,2′-stilbenedisulfonic as an efficient and reusable solid acid catalyst for synthesizing 4H-chromene skeletons via a one-pot three components reaction in a green solvent. The structure of the synthesized catalyst was confirmed by various techniques including FT-IR, XRD, BET, TGA, TEM, EDX, and SEM, and also the product yields were obtained in 83–96% of yields for all the reactions and under mild conditions. The reported procedure presents an environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing a significant number of 4H-chromene derivatives. Correspondingly, MOF-based catalyst makes it easy to separate from reaction media and reuse in the next runs.
