Polymorphism and Its Influence on Catalytic Activities of Lanthanide-Glutamate-Oxalate Coordination Polymers

To study the relationship between polymorphism and catalytic activities of lanthanide coordination polymers in the cycloaddition reactions of CO2 with epoxides, the monoclinic and triclinic polymorphs of [LnIII(NH3-Glu)(ox)]·2H2O, where LnIII = LaIII (I), PrIII (II), NdIII (III), SmIII (IV), EuIII (V), GdIII (VI), TbIII (VII), and DyIII (VIII), NH3-Glu- = NH3+ containing glutamate, and ox2- = oxalate, were synthesized and characterized. Factors determining polymorphic preference, the discrepancy between the two polymorphic framework structures, potential acidic and basic sites, thermal and chemical stabilities, active surface areas, void volumes, CO2 sorption/desorption isotherms, and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 and CO2 are comparatively presented. Based on the cycloaddition of CO2 with epichlorohydrin in the presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide under solvent-free conditions and ambient pressure, catalytic activities of the two polymorphs were evaluated, and the relationship between polymorphism and catalytic performances has been established. Better performances of the monoclinic catalysts have been revealed and rationalized. In addition, the scope of monosubstituted epoxides was experimented and the outstanding performance of the monoclinic catalyst in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with allyl glycidyl ether under ambient pressure has been disclosed.

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Using Homogeneous Carbon Dots with a Molecular Cobalt Catalyst

A simple and precious-metal free photosystem for the reduction of aqueous CO2 to syngas (CO and H2) is reported consisting of carbon dots (CDs) as the sole light harvester together with a molecular cobalt bis(terpyridine) CO2 reduction co-catalyst. This homogeneous photocatalytic system operates in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor (triethanolamine) in DMSO/H2O solution at ambient temperature. The photocatalytic system exhibits an activity of 7.7 ± 0.2 mmolsyngas gCDs -1 (3.6 ± 0.2 mmolCO gCDs -1 and 4.1 ± 0.1 mmolH2 gCDs -1) after 24 hours of full solar spectrum irradiation (AM 1.5G). Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization supports that this photocatalytic performance is attributed to a favorable association between CDs and the molecular cobalt catalyst, which results in improved interfacial photoelectron transfer and catalytic mechanism. This work provides a scalable and inexpensive platform for the development of CO2 photoreduction systems using CDs.

Synergistic sustainability: Future potential of integrating produced water and CO2 for enhanced carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS)

Produced water (PW) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are traditionally considered waste streams the oil and gas industry and other sectors generate. However, these waste products are examples of "waste to wealth" products with a dual nature of being valuable products or disposable byproducts. PW contains various elements and compounds that can be extracted and used in the manufacturing or chemical processing industry. Concentrated brine is generated from PW and can be used as feedstock in chemical processes. On the other hand, excess CO2 produced in various industrial processes needs to be sequestered either through non-conversion processes, such as enhanced oil recovery and storage in geological formations, or through CO2 conversion processes into fuels, polymers, and chemicals. While there is growing interest in reusing these products individually, no studies have explored the opportunities for producing additional chemicals or valuable products by combining CO2 and PW waste streams (CO2-PW). This study identifies the potential resources that can be generated by combining the beneficial reuse of PW and CO2 conversion processes. CO2-PW chemical conversion presents an opportunity to expand the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) mix while reducing the environmental impact of disposing of these byproducts. The advantages of utilizing these waste streams for diverse applications are linked with the sustainable management of PW and decarbonization, contributing positively to a more responsible approach to resource management and climate change mitigation.

Effect of Conversion, Temperature and Feed Ratio on In2 O3 /In(OH)3 Phase Transitions in Methanol Synthesis Catalysts: A Combined Experimental and Computational Study

Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol has attracted lots of attention as it makes CO2 useable as a sustainable carbon source. This study combines theoretical calculations based on the dummy catalytic cycle model with experimental studies on the performance and degradation of indium-based model catalysts for methanol synthesis. In detail, the reversibility of phase transitions in the In2 O3 /In(OH)3 system under industrial methanol synthesis conditions are investigated depending on conversion, temperature and feed ratio. The dummy catalytic cycle model predicts a peculiar degradation behavior of In(OH)3 at 275 °C depending on the water formed either by methanol synthesis or the competing reverse water-gas-shift reaction. These results were validated by dedicated experimental studies confirming the predicted trends. Moreover, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis proved the ensuing phase transition between the indium species. Finally, the validated model is used to predict how hydrogen drop out will affect the stability of the catalyst and derive practical strategies to prevent irreversible catalyst degradation.

Enhanced sustainable integration of CO2 utilization and wastewater treatment using microalgae in circular economy concept

Microalgae have been shown to have a promising potential for CO₂ utilization and wastewater treatment which still faces the challenges of high resource and energy requirements. The implementation of the circular economy concept is able to address the issues that limit the application of microalgae-based technologies. In this review, a comprehensive discussion on microalgae-based CO₂ utilization and wastewater treatment was provided, and the integration of this technology with the circular economy concept, for long-term economic and environmental benefits, was described. Furthermore, technological challenges and feasible strategies towards the improvement of microalgae cultivation were discussed. Finally, necessary regulations and effective policies favoring the implementation of microalgae cultivation into the circular economy were proposed. These are discussed to support sustainable development of microalgae-based bioremediation and bioproduction. This work provides new insights into the implementation of the circular economy concept into microalgae-based CO₂ utilization and wastewater treatment to enhance sustainable production.

A state-of-the-art review of CO2 enhanced oil recovery as a promising technology to achieve carbon neutrality in China

Although there are some review papers on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), hardly any of these reviews are focused on the role of CO₂ enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in accelerating carbon neutrality in China. In this review, strategies to achieve carbon neutrality is briefly but critically discussed, followed by a review of CO₂-EOR as a promising technology. Especially, data analysis, including the number of publications on China's carbon neutrality, per capita CO₂ emissions, China's power generation, and the crude oil production of China's large oilfields, is carried out to make the discussion more comprehensive. Given the large amount of coal consumed in China, the high percent of electricity generated with coal, and the slow penetration of renewables already observed, it seems unlikely that 2060 targets will be met without CCUS. In order to achieve carbon neutrality, both reduction in carbon emissions and increase in carbon sequestration are inevitable. Furthermore, it is concluded that CO₂ storage through EOR is likely to have a bright future. However, there are some critical issues to be solved, including the technical issues, leakage and safety issues, cost issues, policy issues, etc. In order to turn CO₂-EOR into a reliable and more favorable technology, more research and efforts are needed to solve these issues, including advancing carbon capture technologies, improving storage technologies, developing effective monitoring technologies, deploying government support and incentive policies, etc.

Ni-Based Catalyst for Carbon Dioxide Methanation: A Review on Performance and Progress

Catalytic conversion of CO2 into methane is an attractive method because it can alleviate global warming and provide a solution for the energy depletion crisis. Nickel-based catalysts were commonly employed in such conversions due to their high performance over cost ratio. However, the major challenges are that Ni tends to agglomerate and cause carbon deposition during the high-temperature reaction. In the past decades, extensive works have been carried out to design and synthesize more active nickel-based catalysts to achieve high CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity. This review critically discusses the recent application of Ni-based catalyst for CO2 methanation, including the progress on the effect of supporting material, promoters, and catalyst composition. The thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanism of CO2 methanation are also briefly addressed.

Comparison of CO2 Separation Efficiency from Flue Gases Based on Commonly Used Methods and Materials

The comparison study of CO₂ removal efficiency from flue gases at low pressures and temperatures is presented, based on commonly used methods and materials. Our own experimental results were compared and analyzed for different methods of CO₂ removal from flue gases: absorption in a packed column, adsorption in a packed column and membrane separation on polymeric and ceramic membranes, as well as on the developed supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs). The efficiency and competitiveness comparison of the investigated methods showed that SILMs obtained by coating of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][Ac]) exhibit a high ideal CO₂/N₂ selectivity of 152, permeability of 2400 barrer and long term stability. Inexpensive and selective SILMs were prepared applying commercial membranes. Under similar experimental conditions, the absorption in aqueous Monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions is much faster than in ionic liquids (ILs), but gas and liquid flow rates in packed column sprayed with IL are limited due to the much higher viscosity and lower diffusion coefficient of IL. For CO₂ adsorption on activated carbons impregnated with amine or IL, only a small improvement in the adsorption properties was achieved. The experimental research was compared with the literature data to find a feasible solution based on commercially available methods and materials.

Nanomaterials and hybrid nanocomposites for CO2 capture and utilization: environmental and energy sustainability

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions have dramatically increased since the industrial revolution, building up in the atmosphere and causing global warming. Sustainable CO₂ capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) techniques are required, and materials and technologies for CO₂ capture, conversion, and utilization are of interest. Different CCUS methods such as adsorption, absorption, biochemical, and membrane methods are being developed. Besides, there has been a good advancement in CO₂ conversion into viable products, such as photoreduction of CO₂ using sunlight into hydrocarbon fuels, including methane and methanol, which is a promising method to use CO₂ as fuel feedstock using the advantages of solar energy. There are several methods and various materials used for CO₂ conversion. Also, efficient nanostructured catalysts are used for CO₂ photoreduction. This review discusses the sources of CO₂ emission, the strategies for minimizing CO₂ emissions, and CO₂ sequestration. In addition, the review highlights the technologies for CO₂ capture, separation, and storage. Two categories, non-conversion utilization (direct use) of CO₂ and conversion of CO₂ to chemicals and energy products, are used to classify different forms of CO₂ utilization. Direct utilization of CO₂ includes enhanced oil and gas recovery, welding, foaming, and propellants, and the use of supercritical CO₂ as a solvent. The conversion of CO₂ into chemicals and energy products via chemical processes and photosynthesis is a promising way to reduce CO₂ emissions and generate more economically valuable chemicals. Different catalytic systems, such as inorganics, organics, biological, and hybrid systems, are provided. Lastly, a summary and perspectives on this emerging research field are presented.

Greener reactants, renewable energies and environmental impact mitigation strategies in pyrometallurgical processes: A review

Abstract

Metals and alloys are among the most technologically important materials for our industrialized societies. They are the most common structural materials used in cars, airplanes and buildings, and constitute the technological core of most electronic devices. They allow the transportation of energy over great distances and are exploited in critical parts of renewable energy technologies. Even though primary metal production industries are mature and operate optimized pyrometallurgical processes, they extensively rely on cheap and abundant carbonaceous reactants (fossil fuels, coke), require high power heating units (which are also typically powered by fossil fuels) to calcine, roast, smelt and refine, and they generate many output streams with high residual energy content. Many unit operations also generate hazardous gaseous species on top of large CO₂ emissions which require gas-scrubbing and capture strategies for the future. Therefore, there are still many opportunities to lower the environmental footprint of key pyrometallurgical operations. This paper explores the possibility to use greener reactants such as bio-fuels, bio-char, hydrogen and ammonia in different pyrometallurgical units. It also identifies all recycled streams that are available (such as steel and aluminum scraps, electronic waste and Li-ion batteries) as well as the technological challenges associated with their integration in primary metal processes. A complete discussion about the alternatives to carbon-based reduction is constructed around the use of hydrogen, metallo-reduction as well as inert anode electrometallurgy. The review work is completed with an overview of the different approaches to use renewable energies and valorize residual heat in pyrometallurgical units. Finally, strategies to mitigate environmental impacts of pyrometallurgical operations such as CO₂ capture utilization and storage as well as gas scrubbing technologies are detailed. This original review paper brings together for the first time all potential strategies and efforts that could be deployed in the future to decrease the environmental footprint of the pyrometallurgical industry. It is primarily intended to favour collaborative work and establish synergies between academia, the pyrometallurgical industry, decision-makers and equipment providers.

Circular Carbon Economy (CCE): A Way to Invest CO2 and Protect the Environment, a Review

Increased levels of carbon dioxide have revolutionised the Earth; higher temperatures, melting icecaps, and flooding are now more prevalent. Fortunately, renewable energy mitigates this problem by making up 20% of human energy needs. However, from a “green environment” perspective, can carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere be reduced and eliminated? The carbon economic circle is an ideal solution to this problem, as it enables us to store, use, and remove carbon dioxide. This research introduces the circular carbon economy (CCE) and addresses its economic importance. Additionally, the paper discusses carbon capture and storage (CCS), and the utilisation of CO2. Furthermore, it explains current technologies and their future applications on environmental impact, CO2 capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS). Various opinions on the best way to achieve zero carbon emissions and on CO2 applications and their economic impact are also discussed. The circular carbon economy can be achieved through a highly transparent global administration that is supportive of advanced technologies that contribute to the efficient utilisation of energy sources. This global administration must also provide facilities to modernise and develop factories and power stations, based on emission-reducing technologies. Monitoring emissions in countries through a global monitoring network system, based on actual field measurements, linked to a worldwide database allows all stakeholders to track the change in greenhouse gas emissions. The process of sequestering carbon dioxide in the ocean is affected by the support for technologies and industries that adopt the principle of carbon recycling in order to maintain the balance. This includes supporting initiatives that contribute to increasing vegetation cover and preserving oceans from pollutants, especially chemicals and radioactive pollutants, which will undoubtedly affect the process of sequestering carbon dioxide in the oceans, and this will contribute significantly to maintaining carbon dioxide at acceptable levels.

Current and future perspectives on catalytic-based integrated carbon capture and utilization

There exist several well-known methods with varying maturity for capturing carbon dioxide from emission sources of different concentrations, including absorption, adsorption, cryogenics and membrane separation, among others. The capture and separation steps can produce almost pure CO₂, but at substantial cost for being conditioned for transport and final utilization, with high economical risks to be considered. A possible way for the elimination of this conditioning and cost is direct CO₂ utilization, whether on-site in a further process but within the same plant, or in-situ, coupling both capture and conversion in the same unit. This approach is usually called integrated carbon capture and utilization (ICCU) or integrated carbon capture and conversion (ICCC), and has lately started receiving considerable attention in many circles. As CO₂ is already industrially employed in other sectors, such as food preservation, water treatment and conversion to high added-value chemicals and fuels such as methanol, methane, etc., among others, it is of great interest to explore the global ICCC approach. Catalytic-based processes play a key role in CO₂ conversion, and different technologies are gaining great attention from both academia and industry. However, the 'big picture of ICCU' and in which technology the efforts should focus on at large scale is still unclear. This review analyzes some promising concepts of ICCU specifically on CO₂ catalytic conversion, highlighting their current commercial relevance as well as challenges that have to be faced today and in the next future.

Influence of Phase Composition and Pretreatment on the Conversion of Iron Oxides into Iron Carbides in Syngas Atmospheres

CO2 Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (CO2–FTS) is a promising technology enabling conversion of CO2 into valuable chemical feedstocks via hydrogenation. Iron–based CO2–FTS catalysts are known for their high activities and selectivities towards the formation of higher hydrocarbons. Importantly, iron carbides are the presumed active phase strongly associated with the formation of higher hydrocarbons. Yet, many factors such as reaction temperature, atmosphere, and pressure can lead to complex transformations between different oxide and/or carbide phases, which, in turn, alter selectivity. Thus, understanding the mechanism and kinetics of carbide formation remains challenging. We propose model–type iron oxide films of controlled nanostructure and phase composition as model materials to study carbide formation in syngas atmospheres. In the present work, different iron oxide precursor films with controlled phase composition (hematite, ferrihydrite, maghemite, maghemite/magnetite) and ordered mesoporosity are synthesized using the evaporation–induced self–assembly (EISA) approach. The model materials are then exposed to a controlled atmosphere of CO/H2 at 300 °C. Physicochemical analysis of the treated materials indicates that all oxides convert into carbides with a core–shell structure. The structure appears to consist of crystalline carbide cores surrounded by a partially oxidized carbide shell of low crystallinity. Larger crystallites in the original iron oxide result in larger carbide cores. The presented simple route for the synthesis and analysis of soft–templated iron carbide films will enable the elucidation of the dynamics of the oxide to carbide transformation in future work.
