Soft touchless sensors and touchless sensing for soft robots

Soft robots are characterized by their mechanical compliance, making them well-suited for various bio-inspired applications. However, the challenge of preserving their flexibility during deployment has necessitated using soft sensors which can enhance their mobility, energy efficiency, and spatial adaptability. Through emulating the structure, strategies, and working principles of human senses, soft robots can detect stimuli without direct contact with soft touchless sensors and tactile stimuli. This has resulted in noteworthy progress within the field of soft robotics. Nevertheless, soft, touchless sensors offer the advantage of non-invasive sensing and gripping without the drawbacks linked to physical contact. Consequently, the popularity of soft touchless sensors has grown in recent years, as they facilitate intuitive and safe interactions with humans, other robots, and the surrounding environment. This review explores the emerging confluence of touchless sensing and soft robotics, outlining a roadmap for deployable soft robots to achieve human-level dexterity.

Thermoresponsive Conductivity of Graphene-Based Fibers

Smart materials are versatile material systems which exhibit a measurable response to external stimuli. Recently, smart material systems have been developed which incorporate graphene in order to share on its various advantageous properties, such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity as well as to achieve unique stimuli-dependent responses. Here, a graphene fiber-based smart material that exhibits reversible electrical conductivity switching at a relatively low temperature (60 °C), is reported. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and density functional theory-based non-equilibrium Green's function (DFT-NEGF) approach, it is revealed that this thermo-response behavior is due to the change in configuration of amphiphilic triblock dispersant molecules occurring in the graphene fiber during heating or cooling. These conformational changes alter the total number of graphene-graphene contacts within the composite material system, and thus the electrical conductivity as well. Additionally, this graphene fiber fabrication approach uses a scalable, facile, water-based method, that makes it easy to modify material composition ratios. In all, this work represents an important step forward to enable complete functional tuning of graphene-based smart materials at the nanoscale while increasing commercialization viability.

Soft Robotics: A Systematic Review and Bibliometric Analysis

In recent years, soft robotics has developed considerably, especially since the year 2018 when it became a hot field among current research topics. The attention that this field receives from researchers and the public is marked by the substantial increase in both the quantity and the quality of scientific publications. In this review, in order to create a relevant and comprehensive picture of this field both quantitatively and qualitatively, the paper approaches two directions. The first direction is centered on a bibliometric analysis focused on the period 2008-2022 with the exact expression that best characterizes this field, which is "Soft Robotics", and the data were taken from a series of multidisciplinary databases and a specialized journal. The second direction focuses on the analysis of bibliographic references that were rigorously selected following a clear methodology based on a series of inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the selection of bibliographic sources, 111 papers were part of the final analysis, which have been analyzed in detail considering three different perspectives: one related to the design principle (biologically inspired soft robotics), one related to functionality (closed/open-loop control), and one from a biomedical applications perspective.

An Interdisciplinary Tutorial: A Self-Healing Soft Finger with Embedded Sensor

In the field of soft robotics, knowledge of material science is becoming more and more important. However, many researchers have a background in only one of both domains. To aid the understanding of the other domain, this tutorial describes the complete process from polymer synthesis over fabrication to testing of a soft finger. Enough background is provided during the tutorial such that researchers from both fields can understand and sharpen their knowledge. Self-healing polymers are used in this tutorial, showing that these polymers that were once a specialty, have become accessible for broader use. The use of self-healing polymers allows soft robots to recover from fatal damage, as shown in this tutorial, which increases their lifespan significantly.

Roles of Low-Dimensional Nanomaterials in Pursuing Human-Machine-Thing Natural Interaction

A wide variety of low-dimensional nanomaterials with excellent properties can meet almost all the requirements of functional materials for information sensing, processing, and feedback devices. Low-dimensional nanomaterials are becoming the star of hope on the road to pursuing human-machine-thing natural interactions, benefiting from the breakthroughs in precise preparation, performance regulation, structural design, and device construction in recent years. This review summarizes several types of low-dimensional nanomaterials commonly used in human-machine-thing natural interactions and outlines the differences in properties and application areas of different materials. According to the sequence of information flow in the human-machine-thing interaction process, the representative research progress of low-dimensional nanomaterials-based information sensing, processing, and feedback devices is reviewed and the key roles played by low-dimensional nanomaterials are discussed. Finally, the development trends and existing challenges of low-dimensional nanomaterials in the field of human-machine-thing natural interaction technology are discussed.

Flexible Hybrid Electronics Nanofiber Electrodes with Excellent Stretchability and Highly Stable Electrical Conductivity for Smart Clothing

In this paper, a side-by-side, dual-nozzle electrospinning process was used to prepare a flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) material with excellent stretchable properties. A highly stable electrical conductivity was also imparted to the resulting membrane electrodes using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and carbon-based nanomaterials of different structures. The AgNP/carbon-based nanomaterials were coated onto bicomponent polymer nanofibers (composed of polyurethane (PU) and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)) on the nanofiber membrane. The FHE nanofiber electrodes were finally integrated into clothing designed to accurately measure human body sensing signals (e.g., electrocardiography (ECG) and electromyography (EMG) signals). To effectively increase the high electrical conductivity, a polymer-type dispersant (polyisobutylene-b-poly(oxyethylene)-b-polyisobutylene, a triblock copolymer) was used to effectively and stably disperse AgNPs with different particle sizes and carbon-based nanomaterials with different geometric dimensions (e.g., zero-dimensional carbon black, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional graphene) through non-covalent adsorption. Moreover, the bicomponent PVDF-PU nanofibers were immersed in a mixed dispersant of AgNPs and carbon-based nanomaterials at low concentrations, and thermal post-treatment was conducted to improve the electrical conductivity. The AgNP/graphene oxide (GO) nanofiber electrode exhibited a continuous phase with a stable material microstructure after 5000 repetitions of 50% tension-tension fatigue testing. The waveform pattern obtained from the proposed AgNP/GO nanofiber electrode was compared with those of traditional ECG and EMG electrodes. The nanofiber web electrode treated with organic/inorganic mixed dispersants and verified via tests of its electrical and fatigue properties was found to be suitable for long-term ECG and EMG monitoring, and it has excellent potential in wearable smart sensors.

Advances of MXenes; Perspectives on Biomedical Research

The last decade witnessed the emergence of a new family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides named MXenes, which quickly gained momentum due to their exceptional electrical, mechanical, optical, and tunable functionalities. These outstanding properties also rendered them attractive materials for biomedical and biosensing applications, including drug delivery systems, antimicrobial applications, tissue engineering, sensor probes, auxiliary agents for photothermal therapy and hyperthermia applications, etc. The hydrophilic nature of MXenes with rich surface functional groups is advantageous for biomedical applications over hydrophobic nanoparticles that may require complicated surface modifications. As an emerging 2D material with numerous phases and endless possible combinations with other 2D materials, 1D materials, nanoparticles, macromolecules, polymers, etc., MXenes opened a vast terra incognita for diverse biomedical applications. Recently, MXene research picked up the pace and resulted in a flood of literature reports with significant advancements in the biomedical field. In this context, this review will discuss the recent advancements, design principles, and working mechanisms of some interesting MXene-based biomedical applications. It also includes major progress, as well as key challenges of various types of MXenes and functional MXenes in conjugation with drug molecules, metallic nanoparticles, polymeric substrates, and other macromolecules. Finally, the future possibilities and challenges of this magnificent material are discussed in detail.

An ultralight, elastic carbon nanofiber aerogel with efficient energy storage and sorption properties

The fabrication of ultralight strong carbon nanofiber aerogels with excellent elasticity is still a challenge. Herein, 3D mesoporous graphene/carbon nanofibers (G/CNF) were prepared for the first time from polyacrylonitrile/poly(4-vinyl phenol) (PAN/PVPh) electrospun fibers. Through hydrogen bonding interactions between PAN and PVPh polymer chains, traditional soft carbon nanofibers can be converted to form hard nanofiber aerogels with excellent mechanical, electrical, and sorption properties. The specific interactions among PAN/PVPh led to the formation of porous features on carbonized nanofiber foams. The 3D carbon foams are extremely elastic, strong, and light in weight, and they exhibited super oleophilic and fire-resistance properties. Electrochemical studies indicate that the G/CNF foam achieves a capacitance of up to 267 F g^-1 (at a scan rate of 1 mV s^-1), with an energy density of 37.04 W h kg^-1, exhibiting better electrochemical performance than other reported porous carbon devices. In addition, the G/CNF foam also exhibits sorption capacity towards various organic solvents and oils. This study paves the way toward a new class of lightweight and robust porous carbon nanocomposites for application in electrochemical energy storage systems and oil sorption devices.

Design of a Highly Sensitive Reduced Graphene Oxide/Graphene Oxide@Cellulose Acetate/Thermoplastic Polyurethane Flexible Sensor

As a substitute for rigid sensors, flexible sensing materials have been greatly developed in recent years, but maintaining the stability of conductive fillers and the stability of micro-strain sensing is still a major challenge. In this experiment, we innovatively prepared a polyurethane-based cellulose acetate composite membrane (CA/TPU) with abundant mesopores through electrospinning. Then, we reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-as a conductive filler-and graphene oxide (GO)-as an insulating layer-which were successively and firmly anchored on the CA/TPU nanofiber membrane with the ultrasonic impregnation method, to obtain an rGO/GO@CA/TPU sensor with a GF of 3.006 under a very small strain of 0.5%. The flexibility of the film and its high sensitivity under extremely low strains enables the detection of subtle human motions (such as finger bending, joint motion, etc.), making it suitable for potential application in wearable electronic devices.

Properties and Applications of Graphene and Its Derivatives in Biosensors for Cancer Detection: A Comprehensive Review

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide, and there is a critical need for diagnostic platforms for applications in early cancer detection. The diagnosis of cancer can be made by identifying abnormal cell characteristics such as functional changes, a number of vital proteins in the body, abnormal genetic mutations and structural changes, and so on. Identifying biomarker candidates such as DNA, RNA, mRNA, aptamers, metabolomic biomolecules, enzymes, and proteins is one of the most important challenges. In order to eliminate such challenges, emerging biomarkers can be identified by designing a suitable biosensor. One of the most powerful technologies in development is biosensor technology based on nanostructures. Recently, graphene and its derivatives have been used for diverse diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Graphene-based biosensors have exhibited significant performance with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and a wide detection range. In this review, the principle of technology, advances, and challenges in graphene-based biosensors such as field-effect transistors (FET), fluorescence sensors, SPR biosensors, and electrochemical biosensors to detect different cancer cells is systematically discussed. Additionally, we provide an outlook on the properties, applications, and challenges of graphene and its derivatives, such as Graphene Oxide (GO), Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO), and Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs), in early cancer detection by nanobiosensors.

Experimental Studies on the Performance of Graphene Oxide Based Hybrid Nanopolymers for Bearing Applications

In this experimental study, graphene oxide-blended glass-filled nylon (GO-GFN) hybrid nanopolymer composites were developed and characterized. Transmission electron microscopic studies were performed to study the dispersion of graphene oxide in glass-filled nylon composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analyses were conducted on the fabricated hybrid nanopolymer composites to analyze the mechanical and thermal stability. Mechanical properties were investigated by tensile test. The test showed improvements in young’s modulus and tensile strength. Water absorption test was conducted to study the water absorption resistance of the hybrid nanopolymer composites. Finally, roller bearings with graphene oxide and glass-filled nylon were fabricated and analyzed for wear under varying load and speed conditions in the test rig developed in-house. The tests proved the suitability of deploying hybrid nanopolymer composites for bearing applications.

Tunning the Gas Sensing Properties of rGO with In2O3 Nanoparticles

Here, we discuss the effect of In2O3 nanoparticles on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) gas-sensing potentialities. In2O3 nanoparticles were prepared with the polymer precursors method, while the nanocomposites were prepared by mixing an In2O3 nanoparticle suspension with an rGO suspension in different proportions. The gas-sensing performance of our materials was tested by exposing our materials to known concentrations of a target toxic gas in a dry airflow. Our results demonstrate that In2O3 nanoparticles enhance the rGO sensitivity for strong oxidizing species such as O3 and NO2, while a negative effect on its sensitivity for NH3 sensing is observed. Furthermore, our measurements towards H2S suggest that the concentration of In2O3 nanoparticles can induce an uncommon transition from p-type to n-type semiconductor nature when rGO–In2O3 nanocomposites operate at temperatures close to 160 °C.

Modification of carbon-based nanomaterials by polyglycerol: recent advances and applications

Hyperbranched polymers, a subclass of dendritic polymers, mimic nature's components such as trees and nerves. Hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) is a hyperbranched polyether with outstanding physicochemical properties, including high water-solubility and functionality, biocompatibility, and an antifouling feature. HPG has attracted great interest in the modification of different objects, in particular carbon-based nanomaterials. In this review, recent advances in the synthesis and application of HPG to modify carbon-based nanomaterials, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, nanodiamonds, carbon dots, and carbon fibers, are reviewed.

Graphene Biodevices for Early Disease Diagnosis Based on Biomarker Detection

The early diagnosis of diseases plays a vital role in healthcare and the extension of human life. Graphene-based biosensors have boosted the early diagnosis of diseases by detecting and monitoring related biomarkers, providing a better understanding of various physiological and pathological processes. They have generated tremendous interest, made significant advances, and offered promising application prospects. In this paper, we discuss the background of graphene and biosensors, including the properties and functionalization of graphene and biosensors. Second, the significant technologies adopted by biosensors are discussed, such as field-effect transistors and electrochemical and optical methods. Subsequently, we highlight biosensors for detecting various biomarkers, including ions, small molecules, macromolecules, viruses, bacteria, and living human cells. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of graphene-based biosensors and related broad research interests are discussed.

Strategies for Incorporating Graphene Oxides and Quantum Dots into Photoresponsive Azobenzenes for Photonics and Thermal Applications

Graphene represents a new generation of materials which exhibit unique physicochemical properties such as high electron mobility, tunable optics, a large surface to volume ratio, and robust mechanical strength. These properties make graphene an ideal candidate for various optoelectronic, photonics, and sensing applications. In recent years, numerous efforts have been focused on azobenzene polymers (AZO-polymers) as photochromic molecular switches and thermal sensors because of their light-induced conformations and surface-relief structures. However, these polymers often exhibit drawbacks such as low photon storage lifetime and energy density. Additionally, AZO-polymers tend to aggregate even at moderate doping levels, which is detrimental to their optical response. These issues can be alleviated by incorporating graphene derivatives (GDs) into AZO-polymers to form orderly arranged molecules. GDs such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) can modulate the optical response, energy density, and photon storage capacity of these composites. Moreover, they have the potential to prevent aggregation and increase the mechanical strength of the azobenzene complexes. This review article summarizes and assesses literature on various strategies that may be used to incorporate GDs into azobenzene complexes. The review begins with a detailed analysis of structures and properties of GDs and azobenzene complexes. Then, important aspects of GD-azobenzene composites are discussed, including: (1) synthesis methods for GD-azobenzene composites, (2) structure and physicochemical properties of GD-azobenzene composites, (3) characterization techniques employed to analyze GD-azobenzene composites, and most importantly, (4) applications of these composites in various photonics and thermal devices. Finally, a conclusion and future scope are given to discuss remaining challenges facing GD-azobenzene composites in functional science engineering.

Synergizing Functional Nanomaterials with Aptamers Based on Electrochemical Strategies for Pesticide Detection: Current Status and Perspectives

Owing to the high toxicity and large-scale use of pesticides, it is imperative to develop selective, sensitive, portable, and convenient sensors for rapid monitoring of pesticide. Therefore, the electrochemical detection platform offers a promising analytical approach since it is easy to operate, economical, efficient, and user-friendly. Meanwhile, with advances in functional nanomaterials and aptamer selection technologies, numerous sensitivity-enhancement techniques alongside a widespread range of smart nanomaterials have been merged to construct novel aptamer probes to use in the biosensing field. Hence, this study intends to highlight recent development and promising applications on the functional nanomaterials with aptamers for pesticides detection based on electrochemical strategies. We also reviewed the current novel aptamer-functionalized microdevices for the portability of pesticides sensors. Furthermore, the major challenges and future prospects in this field are also discussed to provide ideas for further research.

Carbon Nanomaterials: Synthesis, Functionalization and Sensing Applications

Recent advances in nanomaterial design and synthesis has resulted in robust sensing systems that display superior analytical performance. The use of nanomaterials within sensors has accelerated new routes and opportunities for the detection of analytes or target molecules. Among others, carbon-based sensors have reported biocompatibility, better sensitivity, better selectivity and lower limits of detection to reveal a wide range of organic and inorganic molecules. Carbon nanomaterials are among the most extensively studied materials because of their unique properties spanning from the high specific surface area, high carrier mobility, high electrical conductivity, flexibility, and optical transparency fostering their use in sensing applications. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been made to cover recent developments in the field of carbon-based nanomaterials for sensing applications. The review describes nanomaterials like fullerenes, carbon onions, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. Synthesis of these nanostructures has been discussed along with their functionalization methods. The recent application of all these nanomaterials in sensing applications has been highlighted for the principal applicative field and the future prospects and possibilities have been outlined.

Enabling Technologies for Urban Smart Mobility: Recent Trends, Opportunities and Challenges

The increasing population across the globe makes it essential to link smart and sustainable city planning with the logistics of transporting people and goods, which will significantly contribute to how societies will face mobility in the coming years. The concept of smart mobility emerged with the popularity of smart cities and is aligned with the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations. A reduction in traffic congestion and new route optimizations with reduced ecological footprint are some of the essential factors of smart mobility; however, other aspects must also be taken into account, such as the promotion of active mobility and inclusive mobility, encouraging the use of other types of environmentally friendly fuels and engagement with citizens. The Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain and Big Data technology will serve as the main entry points and fundamental pillars to promote the rise of new innovative solutions that will change the current paradigm for cities and their citizens. Mobility-as-a-service, traffic flow optimization, the optimization of logistics and autonomous vehicles are some of the services and applications that will encompass several changes in the coming years with the transition of existing cities into smart cities. This paper provides an extensive review of the current trends and solutions presented in the scope of smart mobility and enabling technologies that support it. An overview of how smart mobility fits into smart cities is provided by characterizing its main attributes and the key benefits of using smart mobility in a smart city ecosystem. Further, this paper highlights other various opportunities and challenges related to smart mobility. Lastly, the major services and applications that are expected to arise in the coming years within smart mobility are explored with the prospective future trends and scope.

Predictive Maintenance and Intelligent Sensors in Smart Factory: Review

With the arrival of new technologies in modern smart factories, automated predictive maintenance is also related to production robotisation. Intelligent sensors make it possible to obtain an ever-increasing amount of data, which must be analysed efficiently and effectively to support increasingly complex systems' decision-making and management. The paper aims to review the current literature concerning predictive maintenance and intelligent sensors in smart factories. We focused on contemporary trends to provide an overview of future research challenges and classification. The paper used burst analysis, systematic review methodology, co-occurrence analysis of keywords, and cluster analysis. The results show the increasing number of papers related to key researched concepts. The importance of predictive maintenance is growing over time in relation to Industry 4.0 technologies. We proposed Smart and Intelligent Predictive Maintenance (SIPM) based on the full-text analysis of relevant papers. The paper's main contribution is the summary and overview of current trends in intelligent sensors used for predictive maintenance in smart factories.
